The Prospective Natural History Study of Patients with Intractable Venous Malformation and Klippel-Trenaunay Syndrome to Guide Designing a Proof-of-Concept Clinical Trial for Novel Therapeutic Intervention. Abstract
Background: The natural history of venous malformation (VM) and Klippel-Trenaunay Syndrome (KTS) has not been quantitatively studied. To obtain benchmarks to guide designing clinical trials to assess safety and efficacy of novel drug candidates, the clinical course of the patients was followed for 6 months. Methods and Results: This is a multicenter prospective observational study evaluating the change rate in lesion volume from baseline with magnetic resonance images, as the primary endpoint. In addition, disease severities, performance status (PS), pain visual analog scale (VAS) score, quality of life (QoL), infections, and coagulation markers were also evaluated. Thirty-four patients (VM = 17, KTS = 17, 1-53 of age; median 15.9 years) with measurable lesion volume were analyzed. There was no statistically significant difference in the lesion volume between baseline and day 180, and the mean change rate (standard deviation) was 1.06 (0.28). There were no baseline characteristics that affected the change in lesion volume over 6 months. However, there were patients who showed more than 20% volume change and it was suggested that the lesion volume was largely impacted by local infection. There were no statistically significant changes in pain VAS score, severity, PS, QoL score, D-dimer, and platelet count over 6 months within all patients analyzed. Conclusion: The results showed the representative natural course of VM and KTS for a 6-month period with objective change of lesion volume and other factors, suggesting that it is scientifically reasonable to conduct a Phase 2 proof-of-concept study without a placebo arm, using the results of this study as the control. Abstract
We report a case of a second free jejunal transfer to treat metastasis in the mesenteric lymph node of the first jejunal flap. A 73-year-old man underwent total pharyngolaryngectomy, bilateral neck dissection, and free jejunal transfer for recurrent hypopharyngeal cancer [left pyriform sinus, pT2N0, moderately differentiated squamous cell carcinoma (SCC)] after radiotherapy. Seven years post-surgery, he underwent transoral videolaryngoscopic surgery for oropharyngeal cancer (soft palate, pT1N0, well-differentiated SCC). Ten years after the first jejunal transfer, metastasis was found in the mesenteric lymph node surrounding the jejunal flap's vascular pedicle. Under general anesthesia, resection of the first jejunum including the affected lymph node, and second jejunal transfer were performed. Lymph node pathological examination revealed poorly differentiated SCC, compatible with pharyngeal cancer metastasis. After neck dissection and jejunal flap transfer, lymphatic collateral pathways toward the flap's mesenteric lymph node might form. Possibly, hypopharyngeal or oropharyngeal cancer metastasized via this pathway.

Abstract
Changes in genomic structures underlie phenotypic diversification in organisms. Amino acid-changing mutations affect pleiotropic functions of proteins, although little is known about how mutated proteins are adapted in existing developmental programs. Here we investigate the biological effects of a variant of the GLI3 transcription factor (GLI3R1537C) carried in Neanderthals and Denisovans, which are extinct hominins close to modern humans. R1537C does not compromise protein stability or GLI3 activator-dependent transcriptional activities. In contrast, R1537C affects the regulation of downstream target genes associated with developmental processes. Furthermore, genome-edited mice carrying the Neanderthal/Denisovan GLI3 mutation exhibited various alterations in skeletal morphology. Our data suggest that an extinct hominin-type GLI3 contributes to species-specific anatomical variations, which were tolerated by relaxed constraint in developmental programs during human evolution.

Abstract
Venous malformations (VMs) are histopathologically benign but can greatly impair patients' quality of life. Screlothprapy is known to be effective in improving symptoms without a scar, but surgical resection of residual lesions is sometimes necessary due to inadequate reduction. However, there is no consensus on what criteria should be used to consider switching to surgical treatment, and individualized decisions must be made for each case. To investigate the factors that contribute to the lack of efficacy of sclerotherapy in reducing lesions and how to predict this, the authors performed a retrospective clinical imaging and histopathological study of 6 cases of labial vein malformations treated with sclerotherapy and 3 cases without sclerotherapy. Clinical image investigations are based on magnetic resonance imaging before and after sclerotherapy. The authors found a significant decrease in the percentage of cystic components in the total lesion of VMs after sclerotherapy. Histopathological investigations are based on resected VMs with or without sclerotherapy. Elastica van Gieson stains suggested a significant increase in fibrotic tissue inside VMs treated with sclerotherapy compared with those without. In conclusion, magnetic resonance imaging signal changes inside the VMs after sclerotherapy was observed, and it may reflect fibrosis of the tissue. These changes in the VMs after sclerotherapy may reduce the effect of sclerotherapy on tissue reduction should be considered.

Abstract
We developed a resistance measurement using radio frequency reflection to investigate the electrical transport characteristics under destructive pulsed magnetic fields above 100 T. A sample stage consisting of a homemade flexible printed circuit reduced the noise caused by the induced voltage from the pulsed magnetic fields, improving the accuracy of the measurements of the reflected waves. From the obtained reflectance data, the absolute value of the magnetoresistance was successfully determined by analyzing the phase with admittance charts. These developments enable more accurate and comprehensive measurements of electrical resistance in pulsed magnetic fields.

Abstract
This study aimed to elucidate the vasodilatory effects and cytotoxicity of various vasodilators used as antispasmodic agents during microsurgical anastomosis. Rat smooth muscle cells (RSMCs) and human coronary artery endothelial cells (HCAECs) were used to investigate the physiological concentrations and cytotoxicity of various vasodilators (lidocaine, papaverine, nitroglycerin, phentolamine, and orciprenaline). Using a wire myograph system, we determined the vasodilatory effects of each drug in rat abdominal aortic sections at the concentration resulting in maximal vasodilation as well as at the surrounding concentrations 10 min after administration. Maximal vasodilation effect 10 min after administration was achieved at the following concentrations: lidocaine, 35 mM; papaverine, 0.18 mM; nitroglycerin, 0.022 mM; phentolamine, 0.11 mM; olprinone, 0.004 mM. The IC50 for lidocaine, papaverine, and nitroglycerin was measured in rat abdominal aortic sections, as well as in RSMCs after 30 min and in HCAECs after 10 min. Phentolamine and olprinone showed no cytotoxicity towards RSMCs or HCAECs. The concentrations of the various drugs required to achieve vasodilation were lower than the reported clinical concentrations. Lidocaine, papaverine, and nitroglycerin showed cytotoxicity, even at lower concentrations than those reported clinically. Phentolamine and olprinone show antispasmodic effects without cytotoxicity, making them useful candidates for local administration as antispasmodics.

Abstract
Under magnetic fields, quantum magnets often undergo exotic phase transitions with various kinds of order. The discovery of a sequence of fractional magnetization plateaus in the Shastry-Sutherland compound SrCu2(BO3)2 has played a central role in the high-field research on quantum materials, but so far this system could only be probed up to half the saturation value of the magnetization. Here, we report the first experimental and theoretical investigation of this compound up to the saturation magnetic field of 140 T and beyond. Using ultrasound and magnetostriction techniques combined with extensive tensor-network calculations (iPEPS), several spin-supersolid phases are revealed between the 1/2 plateau and saturation (1/1 plateau). Quite remarkably, the sound velocity of the 1/2 plateau exhibits a drastic decrease of -50%, related to the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic instability of the checkerboard-type magnon crystal. The unveiled nature of this paradigmatic quantum system is a new milestone for exploring exotic quantum states of matter emerging in extreme conditions.

Abstract
The phonon magnetochiral effect (MChE) is the nonreciprocal acoustic and thermal transports of phonons caused by the simultaneous breaking of the mirror and time-reversal symmetries. So far, the phonon MChE has been observed only in a ferrimagnetic insulator Cu_{2}OSeO_{3}, where the nonreciprocal response disappears above the Curie temperature of 58 K. Here, we study the nonreciprocal acoustic properties of a room-temperature ferromagnet Co_{9}Zn_{9}Mn_{2} for unveiling the phonon MChE close to room temperature. Surprisingly, the nonreciprocity in this metallic compound is enhanced at higher temperatures and observed up to 250 K. This clear contrast between insulating Cu_{2}OSeO_{3} and metallic Co_{9}Zn_{9}Mn_{2} suggests that metallic magnets have a mechanism to enhance the nonreciprocity at higher temperatures. From the ultrasound and microwave-spectroscopy experiments, we conclude that the magnitude of the phonon MChE of Co_{9}Zn_{9}Mn_{2} mostly depends on the Gilbert damping, which increases at low temperatures and hinders the magnon-phonon hybridization. Our results suggest that the phonon nonreciprocity could be further enhanced by engineering the magnon band of materials.

Abstract
We present the first search for the pair production of dark particles X via K_{L}^{0}→XX with X decaying into two photons using the data collected by the KOTO experiment. No signal was observed in the mass range of 40-110 MeV/c^{2} and 210-240 MeV/c^{2}. This sets upper limits on the branching fractions as B(K_{L}^{0}→XX)<(1-4)×10^{-7} and B(K_{L}^{0}→XX)<(1-2)×10^{-6} at the 90% confidence level for the two mass regions, respectively.

Abstract
In the present study, we examined neural circuit formation in the forebrain of the Olig2 knockout (Olig2-KO) mouse model and found disruption of the anterior commissure at the late foetal stage. Axon bundles of the anterior commissure encountered the wall of the third ventricle and ceased axonal extension. L1-CAM immunohistochemistry showed that Olig2-KO mice lose decussation formation in the basal forebrain. DiI tracing revealed that the thin bundles of the anterior commissure axons crossed the midline but ceased further extension into the deep part of the contralateral side. Furthermore, some fractions of DiI-labelled axons were oriented dorsolaterally, which was not observed in the control mouse forebrain. The rostral part of the third ventricle was much wider in the Olig2-KO mice than in wild-type mice, which likely resulted in the delay of midline fusion and subsequent delay and malformation of the anterior commissure. We analysed gene expression alterations in the Olig2-KO mice using a public database and found multiple genes, which are related to axon guidance and epithelial-mesenchymal transition, showing subtle expression changes. These results suggest that Olig2 is essential for anterior commissure formation, likely by regulating multiple biological processes.

Abstract
Oligodendrocyte precursor cells (OPC) arise from restricted regions of the central nervous system (CNS) and differentiate into myelin-forming cells after migration, but their ultrastructural characteristics have not been fully elucidated. This study examined the three-dimensional ultrastructure of OPCs in comparison with other glial cells in the early postnatal optic nerve by serial block-face scanning electron microscopy. We examined 70 putative OPCs (pOPC) that were distinct from other glial cells according to established morphological criteria. The pOPCs were unipolar in shape with relatively few processes, and their Golgi apparatus were localized in the perinuclear region with a single cisterna. Astrocytes abundant in the optic nerve were distinct from pOPCs and had a greater number of processes and more complicated Golgi apparatus morphology. All pOPCs and astrocytes contained a pair of centrioles (basal bodies). Among them, 45% of pOPCs extended a short cilium, and 20% of pOPCs had centrioles accompanied by vesicles, whereas all astrocytes with basal bodies had cilia with invaginated ciliary pockets. These results suggest that the fine structures of pOPCs during the developing and immature stages may account for their distinct behavior. Additionally, the vesicular transport of the centrioles, along with a short cilium length, suggests active ciliogenesis in pOPCs.

Abstract
We report a case of palliative surgery in a 73-year-old patient with metastatic plantar sarcoma. The patient underwent resection and irradiation of an undifferentiated spindle cell sarcoma in the right plantar region. The wound was not closed and systemic metastases were observed. The chief complaint of the patient on his first visit to our department was difficulty walking due to pain in the right plantar region. Since we were unsuccessful in relieving the pain with conservative treatment, we decided to perform a palliative free tissue transfer to the right plantar. The surgery was successful, the skin ulcer healed, and the pain was relieved after the surgery. When performing palliative surgery, more detailed preoperative management and planning are necessary to achieve a successful outcome. The selection of the flaps according to the local lesion and metastatic lesions and changes in the local hemodynamics should be considered when planning.

Abstract
We investigated the low-temperature and high-field thermodynamic and ultrasonic properties of SrCu_{2}(BO_{3})_{2}, which exhibits various plateaux in its magnetization curve above 27 T, called a magnetic Devil's staircase. The results of the present study confirm that magnetic crystallization, the first step of the staircase, occurs above 27 T as a first-order transition accompanied by a sharp singularity in heat capacity C_{p} and a kink in the elastic constant. In addition, we observe a thermodynamic anomaly at lower fields around 26 T, which has not been previously detected by any magnetic probes. At low temperatures, this magnetically hidden state has a large entropy and does not exhibit Schottky-type gapped behavior, which suggests the existence of low-energy collective excitations. Based on our observations and theoretical predictions, we propose that magnetic quadrupoles form a spin-nematic state around 26 T as a hidden state on the ground floor of the magnetic Devil's staircase.

Abstract
Motor neurons in the spinal cord are essential for movement. During the embryonic period, developing motor neurons store glycogen to protect against hypoglycemic and hypoxic stress. However, the mechanisms by which glycogen metabolism is regulated in motor neurons remain unclear. We herein investigated the transcriptional regulation of genes related to glycogen metabolism in the developing spinal cord. We focused on the regulatory mechanism of glycogen synthase (Gys1) and glycogen phosphorylase brain isoform (PygB), which play central roles in glycogen metabolism, and found that the transcription factor STAT3 regulated the expression of Gys1 and PygB via cis-regulatory promoter sequences in the developing spinal cord. These results suggest that STAT3 is important for the regulation of glycogen metabolism during motor neuron development.

Abstract
Temporal control of neurogenesis is central for the development and evolution of species-specific brain architectures. The balance between progenitor expansion and neuronal differentiation is tightly coordinated by cell-intrinsic and cell-extrinsic cues. Wnt signaling plays pivotal roles in the proliferation and differentiation of neural progenitors in a temporal manner. However, regulatory mechanisms that adjust intracellular signaling amplitudes according to cell fate progression remain to be elucidated. Here, we report the transcriptional controls of Gsk3β, a critical regulator of Wnt signaling, in the developing mouse neocortex. Gsk3β expression was higher in ventricular neural progenitors, while it gradually declined in differentiated neurons. We identified active cis-regulatory module (CRM) of Gsk3β that responded to cell type-specific transcription factors, such as Sox2, Sox9, and Neurogenin2. Furthermore, we found extensive conservation of the CRM among mammals but not in non-mammalian amniotes. Our data suggest that a mammalian-specific CRM drives the cell type-specific activity of Gsk3β to fine tune Wnt signaling, which contributes to the tight control of neurogenesis during neocortical development.

Abstract
We introduce a treatment that combines the cross-leg free flap with the Masquelet technique and describe two cases using this method for bone and soft tissue reconstruction. Both patients were successfully treated and ambulatory. This novel method can be safely performed using the delay technique, indocyanine-green angiography and near-infrared spectroscopy.

Abstract
The J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility was constructed with an aim to explore the origin and evolution of matter in the universe through experiments with intense particle beams. In the past decade, many results from particle and nuclear physics experiments have been obtained at the present facility. To expand the physics programs to as yet unexplored regions, the extension project of the Hadron Experimental Facility has been extensively discussed. This contribution presents the physics of the extension of the Hadron Experimental Facility to resolve issues related to strangeness nuclear physics, hadron physics, and flavor physics.

Abstract
We herein report three cases of mature teratomas with pineal gland differentiation, which is a less recognized phenomenon. Case 1 was a 6-year-old male with a neck mass, Case 2 was a 23-year-old female with a retroperitoneal mass, and Case 3 was a 45-year-old female with a retroperitoneal mass. Each case showed the typical macroscopic and histological findings of mature teratoma, such as solid and cystic lesions mainly lined with a mature squamous epithelium. All cases also showed glial differentiation. Small foci of lobulated cell nests were detected in the center of or adjacent to mature glial tissue. Cells had a clear to pale eosinophilic cytoplasm with small round nuclei. Immunohistochemically, cells were positive for synaptophysin, neurofilament protein with a perivascular "club-shaped swelling" pattern, and cone-rod homeobox protein. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of pineal gland differentiation arising in mature teratoma, which may be easily overlooked or misdiagnosed as somatic-type tumors, particularly neuroendocrine tumors. To avoid overtreatment, pathologists need to be aware that pineal gland differentiation may occur in mature teratomas.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION We hypothesized that hybrid artificial nerves might overcome the limitations of a nerve conduit by isolating nerve fascicles from autologous nerves. Nerve sacrifice during harvest, a drawback of conventional autologous nerve transplantation, may be reduced by the hot dog method. The hot dog method (based on the morphology of hybrid artificial nerves) adds nerve conduits to autologous nerve fascicles. METHODS Forty-eight rats with a 10-mm sciatic nerve defect were divided into six groups (n = 8 per group) according to the neural reconstruction method: autologous nerve transplantation, the hot dog method, nerve conduit, nerve fascicle transplantation, sham control, and nerve fascicle isolation were classified as Groups I, II, III, IV, V, and VI, respectively. The sciatic nerve function was assessed in these groups, a histological evaluation was performed, and statistical analyses were conducted based on these data. RESULTS Group III (nerve conduit) and Group IV (nerve fascicle transplantation) showed the lowest functional and axonal regenerative effects, followed by Group II (hot dog method) and Group I (autologous nerve transplantation). Group VI (nerve fascicle isolation) tended to achieve better recovery in motor function and axonal regeneration than Group I (autologous nerve transplantation). CONCLUSIONS The hot dog method is simple, safe, and easy to execute. This method can serve as a new neural reconstruction method that uses artificial nerves.

Abstract
A congenital cheek fistula is a rare malformation in the buccal area. Here, we report the case of a congenital cheek fistula in a 50-year-old woman who visited our clinic with complaints of swelling and pain in her left cheek. Physical examination revealed a small hole in the left corner of the mouth present since birth. She had no other congenital malformations in the maxillofacial region such as an accessory ear and cleft lip. Manual compression of the cheek mass induced serous discharge from the hole. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a cystic lesion in the left cheek and a fistula within the orbicularis oris muscle that opened into the small hole. After immediate incision and drainage of the cyst, both the cyst and fistula were surgically resected. The cystic lesion was completely delineated from the boundary of the parotid gland. The orbicularis oris muscle was partially incised to remove the fistula and the surrounding scar tissue. Histopathological examination of the resected specimen revealed a cavity consisting of epithelium inside the fistula. The postoperative course was insignificant. No recurrence of the cyst was observed six months postoperatively. The operative and pathological findings demonstrated that the ectoderm-derived epithelial tissue was enclosed by the mesoderm-derived muscle tissue. The mixture of different germ layer-derived tissues suggested that the fistula was a type of congenital transverse facial cleft induced by malfusion of the mandibular and maxillary prominences during embryonic development. The differential diagnoses of the congenital cheek fistula included orocutaneous fistulas and salivary fistulas. MRI was useful in delineating the border between the lesion and the surrounding tissue.

Abstract
The six-layered neocortex is a shared characteristic of all mammals, but not of non-mammalian species, and its formation requires an inside-out pattern of neuronal migration. The extant reptilian dorsal cortex is thought to represent an ancestral form of the neocortex, although how the reptilian three-layered cortex is formed is poorly understood. Here, we show unique patterns of lamination and neuronal migration in the developing reptilian cortex. While the multipolar-to-bipolar transition of migrating neurons is essential for mammalian cortical development, the reptilian cortex lacks bipolar-shaped migrating neurons, resulting in an outside-in pattern of cortical development. Furthermore, dynamic regulation of Wnt signal strengths contributes to neuronal morphological changes, which is conserved across species. Our data preclude the idea that the six-layered mammalian neocortex emerged by simple addition to the reptilian dorsal cortex but suggest that the acquisition of a novel neuronal morphology based on conserved developmental programs contributed to neocortical evolution.

Abstract
Ultrasound is a powerful means to study numerous phenomena of condensed-matter physics as acoustic waves couple strongly to structural, magnetic, orbital, and charge degrees of freedom. In this paper, we present such a technique combined with single-turn coils (STCs) that generate magnetic fields beyond 100 T with the typical pulse duration of 6 µs. As a benchmark of this technique, the ultrasound results for MnCr2S4, Cu6[Si6O18]·6H2O, and liquid oxygen are shown. The resolution for the relative sound-velocity change in the STC is estimated as Δv/v ∼ 10-3, which is sufficient to study various field-induced phase transitions and critical phenomena.

Abstract
The rare decay K_{L}→π^{0}νν[over ¯] was studied with the dataset taken at the J-PARC KOTO experiment in 2016, 2017, and 2018. With a single event sensitivity of (7.20±0.05_{stat}±0.66_{syst})×10^{-10}, three candidate events were observed in the signal region. After unveiling them, contaminations from K^{±} and scattered K_{L} decays were studied, and the total number of background events was estimated to be 1.22±0.26. We conclude that the number of observed events is statistically consistent with the background expectation. For this dataset, we set an upper limit of 4.9×10^{-9} on the branching fraction of K_{L}→π^{0}νν[over ¯] at the 90% confidence level.

Abstract
Single-turn coil (STC) technique is a convenient way to generate ultrahigh magnetic fields of more than 100 T. During the field generation, the STC explosively destructs outward due to the Maxwell stress and Joule heating. Unfortunately, the STC does not work at its full potential because it has already expanded when the maximum magnetic field is reached. Here, we propose an easy way to delay the expansion and increase the maximum field by using a mass-loaded STC. By loading clay on the STC, the field profile drastically changes, and the maximum field increases by 4%. This method offers access to higher magnetic fields for physical property measurements.

Abstract
Pedicled rectus abdominis myocutaneous flap was used for pelvic reconstruction. The flap and vascular pedicle were passed through the shortest intra-pelvic path. The shortest path passed between the bladder and pelvic wall. Flap’s cranial side was assigned to the perineum and caudal side to pelvic floor. Resected area dead space was filled with subcutaneous tissues of the flap.
Introduction Limited literature exists regarding the positional relationship between the pedicled-rectus abdominis myocutaneous (p-RAMC) flap and residual pelvic organs post posterior pelvic exenteration (PPE). Presentation of case Four patients underwent PPE and reconstruction with a p-RAMC flap. After harvesting the p-RAMC flap with the deep inferior epigastric artery and veins as the vascular pedicle, the intra-pelvic shortest pathway of the flap was created. We dissected the subcutaneous tissues of the flap donor site toward the perineal defect along the inner wall of the pelvis. The pubic origin of the rectus abdominis muscle was preserved. A three-dimensional model was constructed using an image processing software. The vascular pedicle ran almost linearly along the inner wall of the pelvis. The muscle belly was placed on the pelvic floor through the posterior wall of the urinary bladder which filled the dead space of the resected area. All flaps survived without significant complications. Discussion Assigning the cranial side of the flap to the perineum and caudal side to the pelvic floor could reduce postoperative intrapelvic complications. By preserving the pubic origin of the rectus abdominis muscle, a shock absorber of the pedicle of the flap was created, preventing over-traction of the flap while passing through the intrapelvic pathway. Conclusion A p-RAMC flap via intra-pelvic shortest pathway is an ideal reconstructive method for large skin defect in perineal area after PPE.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Intraoperative vasospasm during reconstructive microvascular surgery is often unpredictable and may lead to devastating flap loss. Therefore, various vasodilators are used in reconstructive microsurgery to prevent and relieve vasospasm. Lidocaine is a vasodilator commonly used in microvascular surgery. Although many reports have described its in vitro and in vivo concentration-dependent vasodilatory effects, limited studies have examined the pharmacological effects of lidocaine on blood vessels in terms of persistence and titer. METHODS In this study, the vasodilatory effect of lidocaine was examined by using the wire myograph system. Abdominal aortas were harvested from female rats, sliced into rings of 1-mm thickness, and mounted in the wire myograph system. Next, 10, 5, 2, and 1% lidocaine solutions were applied to the artery, and the change in vasodilation force, persistence of the force, and time required to reach equilibrium were measured. RESULTS The vasodilatory effect was confirmed in all groups following lidocaine treatment. Although strong vasodilation was observed in the 10% lidocaine group, it was accompanied by irreversible degeneration of the artery. Vasodilation in the 1% lidocaine group was weaker than that in the other groups 500 seconds after lidocaine addition (p < 0.05). Between the 5 and 2% lidocaine groups, 5% lidocaine showed a stronger vasodilatory effect 400 to 600 seconds after lidocaine addition (p < 0.01); however, there was no significant difference in these groups after 700 seconds. Additionally, there was no difference in the time required for the relaxation force to reach equilibrium among the 5, 2, and 1% lidocaine groups. CONCLUSION Although our study confirmed the dose-dependent vasodilatory effect of lidocaine, 5% lidocaine showed the best vasodilatory effect and continuity with minimal irreversible changes in the arterial tissue.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to examine the usefulness of treating orbital blowout fracture using a customized rigid carrier. MATERIAL AND METHODS Patients who underwent surgery for orbital blowout fractures in our department from April 2016 to March 2019 were recruited in the study. We molded a rigid thermoplastic material into the same shape as the reconstruction material according to the 3D model and transplanted it into the orbital space along with the reconstruction material. We assessed Hertel exophthalmometry, awareness of diplopia, and the Hess area ratio (HAR%). RESULTS We performed this procedure in 15 patients with blowout fractures. Reconstruction materials used were iliac bone, absorbable plates, and titanium mesh in 12, 2, and 1 patient, respectively. None of the patients showed a difference of more than 2 mm on Hertel exophthalmometry. Only one patient had diplopia after surgery. The average preoperative and postoperative HAR% were 83.1 and 90.6, respectively. HAR% was more than 85% in 6 of 7 postoperative cases. CONCLUSIONS This method can be applied for surgery using various reconstructive materials and can be a useful method, especially in patients with a wide range of orbital bone defects.

Abstract
Brain structures are diverse among species despite the essential molecular machinery of neurogenesis being common. Recent studies have indicated that differences in the mechanical properties of tissue may result in the dynamic deformation of brain structure, such as folding. However, little is known about the correlation between mechanical properties and species-specific brain structures. To address this point, a comparative analysis of mechanical properties using several animals is required. For a systematic measurement of the brain stiffness of remotely maintained animals, we developed a novel strategy of tissue-stiffness measurement using glyoxal as a fixative combined with atomic force microscopy. A comparison of embryonic and juvenile mouse and songbird brain tissue revealed that glyoxal fixation can maintain brain structure as well as paraformaldehyde (PFA) fixation. Notably, brain tissue fixed by glyoxal remained much softer than PFA-fixed brains, and it can maintain the relative stiffness profiles of various brain regions. Based on this method, we found that the homologous brain regions between mice and songbirds exhibited different stiffness patterns. We also measured brain stiffness in other amniotes (chick, turtle, and ferret) following glyoxal fixation. We found stage-dependent and species-specific stiffness in pallia among amniotes. The embryonic chick and matured turtle pallia showed gradually increasing stiffness along the apico-basal tissue axis, the lowest region at the most apical region, while the ferret pallium exhibited a catenary pattern, that is, higher in the ventricular zone, the inner subventricular zone, and the cortical plate and the lowest in the outer subventricular zone. These results indicate that species-specific microenvironments with distinct mechanical properties emerging during development might contribute to the formation of brain structures with unique morphology.

Abstract
Infantile hemangioma (IH) is a benign vascular tumor that gradually involutes over several years. Rapidly involuting congenital hemangioma (RICH) is the relatively rare congenital vascular tumor that is fully grown at birth and does not undergo postnatal growth and involutes during the first year. However, after involution of both IH and RICH, some have severe sequelae, such as redundant skin or conspicuous scarring, requiring additional treatment. We present the case of a 6-year-old girl with a concave deformity due to subcutaneous atrophy, skin darkening, and altered skin texture of her left zygomatic region following involution of a hemangioma. We successfully treated this patient by transferring a dermal fat graft. This technique can be beneficial for atrophic sequelae after regression of a hemangioma and is easy to perform and cosmetically effective.
