How bumblebees coordinate path integration and body orientation at the start of their first learning flight. J Exp Biol 2023; 226:304894. Abstract
The start of a bumblebee's first learning flight from its nest provides an opportunity to examine the bee's learning behaviour during its initial view of the nest's unfamiliar surroundings. Bumblebees like many other bees, wasps and ants learn views of their nest surroundings while they face their nest. We find that a bumblebee's first fixation of the nest is a coordinated manoeuvre in which the insect faces the nest with its body oriented towards a particular visual feature within its surroundings. This conjunction of nest-fixation and body-orientation is preceded and reached by means of a translational scan during which the bee flies perpendicularly to its preferred body orientation. The significance of the coordinated manoeuvre is apparent during return flights after foraging. Bees then adopt a similar preferred body-orientation when they are close to the nest. How does a bee, unacquainted with its surroundings, know when it is facing its nest? A likely answer is path integration which gives bees continuously updated information about the current direction of their nest. Path integration also enables bees to fixate the nest when the body points in the appropriate direction. The three components of this coordinated manoeuvre are discussed in relation to current understanding of the central complex in the insect brain, noting that nest fixation is egocentric, whereas adopting a preferred body orientation and flight direction within the visual surroundings of the nest are geocentric.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The mechanical consequences of the motor actions used to maintain upright standing balance can be discriminated in two mechanisms: i) moving the center of pressure (CoP) within the base of support (M1); and ii) modifying the whole-body angular momentum (M2). Since the contribution of M2 to the whole-body CoM acceleration increases with postural constraints, a postural analysis focusing only on the CoP trajectory (i.e. M1) could ignore the majority of the control actions in challenging postural tasks. The objective of this study was to determine the contributions of the two postural balance mechanisms across postures with different areas of the base of support. METHODS Forty-one healthy young adults (19 females, 22.9 ± 2.9 years old) stood quietly on a forceplate, maintaining four different postures: bipedal, tandem, unipedal and unipedal on a 4-cm wooden bar; each with eyes open and for 60 s. Relative contributions of the two balance postural mechanisms were computed for each posture, in both directions of the horizontal plane. RESULTS The posture impacted the mechanisms contributions, where the contribution of M1 decreased between each posture in the mediolateral direction as the area of the base of support was reduced. The contribution of M2 in the mediolateral direction was not negligible (about 1/3) in tandem and unipedal postures and became dominant (nearly 90% on average) in the most challenging unipedal posture. SIGNIFICANCE This suggests the contribution of M2 should not be neglected for the analysis of postural balance, and particularly in challenging standing postures.

Abstract
SARS-CoV-2 infection goes beyond acute pneumonia, as it also impacts lipid metabolism. Decreased HDL-C and LDL-C levels have been reported in patients with COVID-19. The lipid profile is a less robust biochemical marker than apolipoproteins, components of lipoproteins. However, the association of apolipoprotein levels during COVID-19 is not well described and understood. The objective of our study is to measure plasma levels of 14 apolipoproteins in patients with COVID-19 and to evaluate the relationships between apolipoprotein levels, severity factors and patient outcomes. From November to March 2021, 44 patients were recruited on admission to the intensive care unit because of COVID-19. Fourteen apolipoproteins and LCAT were measured by LC-MS/MS in plasma of 44 COVID-19 patients on admission to the ICU and 44 healthy control subjects. Absolute apolipoprotein concentrations were compared between COVID-19 patients and controls. Plasma apolipoproteins (Apo) A (I, II, IV), C(I, II), D, H, J and M and LCAT were lower in COVID-19 patients, whereas Apo E was higher. COVID-19 severity factors such as PaO2/FiO2 ratio, SO-FA score and CRP were correlated with certain apolipoproteins. Lower Apo B100 and LCAT levels were observed in non-survivors of COVID-19 versus survivors. To conclude, in this study, lipid and apolipoprotein profiles are altered in COVID-19 patients. Low Apo B100 and LCAT levels may be predictive of non-survival in COVID-19 patients.

Abstract
High-density lipoproteins (HDLs), whose main role is the reverse transport of cholesterol, also have pleiotropic anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-apoptotic and anti-infectious properties. During sepsis, HDL cholesterol (HDL-C) concentration is low, HDL particle functionality is altered, and these modifications are correlated with poor outcomes. Based on the protective effects of HDL, we hypothesized that HDL-C levels could be associated with lung transplantation (LT) outcome. We thus looked for an association between basal HDL-C concentration and one-year mortality after LT. In this single-center prospective study including consecutive LTs from 2015 to 2020, 215 patients were included, essentially pulmonary fibrosis (47%) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (38%) patients. Mortality rate at one-year was 23%. Basal HDL-C concentration stratified nonsurvivors to survivors at one-year (HDL-C = 1.26 [1.12-1.62] mmol/L vs. HDL-C = 1.55 [1.22-1.97] mmol/L, p = 0.006). Multivariate analysis confirmed that HDL-C concentration during the pretransplant assessment period was the only variable inversely associated with mortality. Moreover, mortality at one-year in patients with HDL-C concentrations ≤1.45 mmol/L was significantly higher (log-rank test, p = 0.00085). In conclusion, low basal HDL-C concentrations in candidates for LT are strongly associated with mortality after LT. To better understand this association, further studies in this field are essential and, in particular, a better characterization of HDL particles seems necessary.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Thoracic pial arteriovenous fistulas (pAVFs) are rare vascular malformations that usually consist of a single dilated pial artery connecting directly to an enlarged draining vein. Multiple shunting point thoracic pAVFs are even rarer entities causing progressive myelopathy. METHOD We present our surgical technique to identify and exclude multiple shunting point thoracic pAVF with appropriate pre-operative planning. This surgical technique is illustrated by an intraoperative video. CONCLUSION Double injection pre-operative angiography represents a helpful tool to plan the surgery. Intraoperative exposure with pedicle removal and the use of micro-Doppler improve the identification and the exclusion of a multiple shunting thoracic pAVF.

Abstract
Background
High-density lipoproteins (HDLs) are synthesized by the liver and display endothelioprotective properties, including anti-inflammatory, antiapoptotic, antithrombotic and antioxidant effects. In both septic and chronic liver failure patients, a low HDL cholesterol (HDL-C) concentration is associated with overmortality. Whereas sepsis-associated liver dysfunction is poorly defined, the aim of this study was to characterize the relationship between liver dysfunction, lipoprotein concentrations and mortality in septic patients in the intensive care unit (ICU).
Methods
A prospective observational study was conducted in a university hospital ICU. All consecutive patients admitted for septic shock or sepsis were included. Total cholesterol, HDL-C, low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C), and triglyceride levels were assessed at admission. Sepsis-associated liver dysfunction was defined as a serum bilirubin≥ 2N or aspartate aminotransferase/alanine aminotransferase concentrations ≥ 2N. Short-term and one-year prognostic outcomes were prospectively assessed.
Results
A total of 219 septic patients were included, and 15% of them presented with sepsis-associated liver dysfunction at admission. Low concentrations of lipoproteins were associated with mortality at Day 28 in the overall population. Sepsis-associated liver dysfunction at admission was associated with overmortality. In this subgroup, patients had a lower HDL-C concentration than patients without hepatic dysfunction (HDL-C = 0.31 [0.25, 0.55] mmol/L vs. 0.48 [0.29, 0.73] mmol/L, p = 0.0079) but there was no relationship with the outcome. Interestingly, no correlation was observed between lipoprotein concentrations and liver dysfunction markers.
Conclusion
Sepsis-associated liver dysfunction at ICU admission is strongly associated with overmortality and is associated with a lower HDL-C concentration. However, in this subgroup of patients, HDL-C concentration had no relationship with mortality. Further exploratory studies are needed to better understand the interaction between lipoproteins and liver dysfunction during sepsis.

Abstract
Introduction The Fourth Universal Definition of Myocardial Infarction Global Taskforce recommends the use of high sensitive troponin (hs-Tn) assays in the diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction. We evaluated the analytical performance of the Atellica IM High-sensitivity Troponin I Assay (hs-TnI) (Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics Inc., Tarrytown, USA) and compared its performance to other hs-TnI assays (Siemens Advia Centaur, Dimension Vista, Dimension EXL, and Abbott Architect (Wiesbaden, Germany)) at one or more sites across Europe. Materials and methods Precision, detection limit, linearity, method comparison, and interference studies were performed according to Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute protocols. Values in 40 healthy individuals were compared to the manufacturer’s cut-offs. Sample turnaround time (TAT) was examined. Results Imprecision repeatability CVs were 1.1–4.7% and within-lab imprecision were 1.8–7.6% (10.0–25,000 ng/L). The limit of blank (LoB), detection (LoD), and quantitation (LoQ) aligned with the manufacturer’s values of 0.5 ng/L, 1.6 ng/L, and 2.5 ng/L, respectively. Passing-Bablok regression demonstrated good correlations between Atellica IM analyser with other systems; some minor deviations were observed. All results in healthy volunteers fell below the 99th percentile URL, and greater than 50% of each sex demonstrated values above the LoD. No interference was observed for biotin (≤ 1500 µg/L), but a slight bias at 5.0 g/L haemoglobin and 50 ng/L Tn was observed. TAT from was fast (mean time = 10.9 minutes) and reproducible (6%CV). Conclusions Real-world analytical and TAT performance of the hs-TnI assay on the Atellica IM analyser make this assay fit for routine use in clinical laboratories.

Abstract
Introduction Les patients hémodialysés chroniques (HD) constituent une population à haut risque de COVID-19 sévère, et ne peuvent rester confinés. La prévalence de l’immunisation contre le SARS-CoV-2 parmi les patients HD et les soignants, après la première vague de COVID-19 et avant la campagne de vaccination, reste inconnue. Description PHRC inter-régional, étude de cohorte prospective réalisée entre juin et décembre 2020 dans 4 grands centres de dialyse d’Aix–Marseille (dépistage systématique des symptômes et mesures d’isolement des malades infectés dès le début de la pandémie). Méthodes Séroprévalence SARS-CoV2 évaluée par test sérologique rapide (Biosynex®) chez les patients et leurs soignants en juin (M0), septembre(M3) et décembre (M6) 2020. Résultats En juin 2020, 451 patients HD et 238 soignants ont été inclus. La séroprévalence SARS-CoV2 à M0 était de 8,4 % chez les patients et 6,7 % chez les soignants. Parmi les participants immunisés, 26,3 % des patients et 6,3 % des soignants n’avaient présenté aucun symptôme de COVID-19. Parmi les participants ayant eu une infection SARS-CoV2 documentée avant M0, 87 % des patients et 90 % des soignants étaient immunisés à M0. La séroprévalence est restée stable à M3, et a augmenté à M6 lors de la 2e vague épidémique, atteignant 13,8 % des patients et 12,6 % des soignants. À M6, 38 (8,4 %) patients étaient décédés dont 9 (2 %) de COVID-19, et 12 autres ont été hospitalisés pour COVID-19. Deux patients immunisés à M0 ont présenté une COVID-19 non sévère au cours du suivi. Conclusion Dans cette large cohorte de patients HD et de soignants, la prévalence de l’immunisation SARS-CoV2 après la première vague épidémique était relativement faible, ce qui reflète probablement l’efficacité des mesures de protection mises en place. L’immunisation n’était pas toujours persistante chez les participants, et certains patients immunisés à M0 ont pu être infectés, ce qui souligne l’intérêt de la vaccination systématique de cette population.

Abstract
Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), a relevant technology for patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) or acute cardiac failure (ACF), is a frequent cause of systemic inflammatory response syndrome. During sepsis, HDL cholesterol (HDL-C) and LDL cholesterol (LDL-C) concentrations decrease, and an association between low lipoprotein levels and poor outcomes was reported. There are no data from patients undergoing ECMO. The goal of this study was to characterize the lipoprotein profiles of ICU patients requiring ECMO. All consecutive patients admitted for ARDS or ACF requiring ECMO were prospectively included. Daily lipoprotein levels and short-term prognosis outcome were assessed. 25 patients were included. On admission, lipoprotein concentrations were low, under the reference values ([HDL-C] = 0.6[0.4–0.8]mmol/L;[LDL-C] = 1.3[1.0–1.7]mmol/L). A statistically significant rise in lipoproteins overtime was observed during the ICU stay. We found no relationship between lipoproteins concentrations and mortality on Day-28 (p = 0.689 and p = 0.979, respectively). Comparison of surviving patients with non-surviving patients did not reveal any differences in lipoproteins concentrations. Stratification between septic and non-septic patients demonstrated that septic patients had lower lipoproteins concentrations on admission (HDL-C: 0.5[0.3–0.6]mmol/l vs 0.8[0.6–0.9]mmol/l, p = 0.003; LDL-C: 1.1[0.9–1.5]mmol/l vs 1.5[1.3–2.6]mmol/l; p = 0.012), whereas these two groups were comparable in terms of severity and outcomes. HDL-C concentrations during ICU hospitalization were also significantly lower in the septic group than in the non-septic group (p = 0.035). In conclusion, Lipoprotein concentrations are low in patients requiring ECMO but are not associated with poor outcomes. The subpopulation of septic patients had lower lipoprotein levels overtime, which reinforces the potential key-role of these particles during sepsis.

Background High-density lipoproteins (HDLs), particles characterized by their reverse cholesterol transport function, display pleiotropic properties, including anti-inflammatory and antioxidant functions. Moreover, all lipoproteins (HDLs but also low-density lipoproteins (LDLs)) neutralize lipopolysaccharides, leading to increased bacterial clearance. These two lipoproteins decrease during sepsis, and an association between low lipoprotein levels and poor outcome was reported. The goals of this study were to characterize the lipid profile of septic patients hospitalized in our intensive care unit (ICU) and to determine the relationship with the outcome. Methods A prospective observational study was conducted in a university hospital ICU. All consecutive patients admitted for septic shock or sepsis were included. Total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and triglyceride levels were assessed at admission (day 1), at day 3, and at ICU discharge. When available, a prehospitalization lipid profile collected prior to the patient’s hospitalization was compiled. Short-term and 1-year prognostic outcomes were prospectively assessed. Results A total of 205 patients were included. We found a decrease in HDL-C concentration between previous values and those at admission, followed by an additional decrease at day 3. At ICU discharge, the concentration was higher than that at day 3 but did not reach the concentration measured prior to hospitalization (prior HDL-C = 1.22 (1.04–1.57) mmol/l; day 1 HDL-C = 0.44 (0.29–0.70) mmol/l; day 3 HDL-C = 0.30 (0.25–0.48) mmol/l; and HDL-C at discharge = 0.65 (0.42–0.82) mmol/l). A similar trend was found for LDL-C (prior LDL-C = 2.7 (1.91–3.33) mmol/l; day 1 LDL-C = 1.0 (0.58–1.50) mmol/l; day 3 LDL-C = 1.04 (0.64–1.54) mmol/l; and LDL-C at discharge = 1.69 (1.26–2.21) mmol/l). Mixed models for repeated measures of lipoprotein concentrations showed a significant difference in HDL-C and LDL-C concentrations over time between survivors and nonsurvivors at day 28. An HDL-C concentration at admission of less than 0.4 mmol/l was associated with increased mortality at day 28 (log-rank test, p = 0.034) but not at 1 year (log-rank test, p = 0.24). An LDL-C concentration at admission of less than 0.72 mmol/l was associated with increased mortality at day 28 and at 1 year (log-rank test, p < 0.001 and p = 0.007, respectively). No link was found between prior lipid profile and mortality. Conclusions We showed no relationship between the prehospitalization lipid profile and patient outcome, but low lipoprotein levels in the ICU were strongly associated with short-term mortality.

Abstract
The ophthalmic artery has one of the most fascinating embryologic developments among the craniofacial arteries. Most of the ophthalmic artery orbital branches develop from the formation and regression of the stapedial artery and share their origin with dural branches of the ophthalmic artery. The concomitant embryologic development of the ophthalmic artery and middle meningeal artery explains adequately the important varieties of anastomosis between these 2 arteries. It also explains the presence of many dural branches from the ophthalmic artery. In this review, we focused on dural branches of the ophthalmic artery with the description of rare variations possible, in particular the ophthalmic artery origin of the middle meningeal artery and the ophthalmic artery origin of the marginal tentorial artery.

Abstract
This study characterizes sunflower response to the levels of Cd encountered in moderately Cd-polluted soils. Two sunflower cultivars differing in their ability to sequestrate Cd in roots were exposed to low concentrations of Cd (0.5 nM or 100 nM) in hydroponics and sampled after 18 days (258 degree-days) when ten leaves were fully expanded. Plant growth, Cd uptake and partitioning among organs were monitored along with the ionomic (ICP-MS) and the metabolic (1H-NMR) composition of the xylem sap. Sunflower tolerance to Cd differed between the two cultivars. The cultivar with the highest ability to sequestrate Cd in roots (Kapllan) was more tolerant to Cd than the one with the lowest ability (ES RICA). The 23% penalization of plant growth observed at 100 nM in cultivar ES RICA was associated with reduced xylem loading fluxes of soluble sugars, perhaps pointing to disruption of carbohydrate metabolism. Retention of Cd in the stem was higher at 100 nM than at 0.5 nM in the Cd-sensitive cultivar ES RICA, which can be seen as a sunflower strategy to restrict the amount of Cd delivered to the leaves under Cd stress. No direct connection was found between the speciation of Cd in the xylem sap and the Cd translocation efficiency, although significant changes in the free ionic fraction of Cd were observed between the two cultivars at 0.5 nM. The relevance of these results in promoting the use of sunflower in phytomanagement of Cd-polluted soils is discussed.

Abstract
The stapedial artery is an embryonic artery that represents the precursor of some orbital, dural, and maxillary branches. Although its embryologic development and transformations are very complex, it is mandatory to understand the numerous anatomic variations of the middle meningeal artery. Thus, in the first part of this review, we describe in detail the hyostapedial system development with its variants, referring also to some critical points of ICA, ophthalmic artery, trigeminal artery, and inferolateral trunk embryology. This basis will allow the understanding of the anatomic variants of the middle meningeal artery, which we address in the second part of the review.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus2 has caused a global pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). High-density lipoproteins (HDLs), particles chiefly known for their reverse cholesterol transport function, also display pleiotropic properties, including anti-inflammatory or antioxidant functions. HDLs and low-density lipoproteins (LDLs) can neutralize lipopolysaccharides and increase bacterial clearance. HDL cholesterol (HDL-C) and LDL cholesterol (LDL-C) decrease during bacterial sepsis, and an association has been reported between low lipoprotein levels and poor patient outcomes. The goal of this study was to characterize the lipoprotein profiles of severe ICU patients hospitalized for COVID-19 pneumonia and to assess their changes during bacterial ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) superinfection. METHODS A prospective study was conducted in a university hospital ICU. All consecutive patients admitted for COVID-19 pneumonia were included. Lipoprotein levels were assessed at admission and daily thereafter. The assessed outcomes were survival at 28 days and the incidence of VAP. RESULTS A total of 48 patients were included. Upon admission, lipoprotein concentrations were low, typically under the reference values ([HDL-C] = 0.7[0.5-0.9] mmol/L; [LDL-C] = 1.8[1.3-2.3] mmol/L). A statistically significant increase in HDL-C and LDL-C over time during the ICU stay was found. There was no relationship between HDL-C and LDL-C concentrations and mortality on day 28 (log-rank p = 0.554 and p = 0.083, respectively). A comparison of alive and dead patients on day 28 did not reveal any differences in HDL-C and LDL-C concentrations over time. Bacterial VAP was frequent (64%). An association was observed between HDL-C and LDL-C concentrations on the day of the first VAP diagnosis and mortality ([HDL-C] = 0.6[0.5-0.9] mmol/L in survivors vs. [HDL-C] = 0.5[0.3-0.6] mmol/L in nonsurvivors, p = 0.036; [LDL-C] = 2.2[1.9-3.0] mmol/L in survivors vs. [LDL-C] = 1.3[0.9-2.0] mmol/L in nonsurvivors, p = 0.006). CONCLUSION HDL-C and LDL-C concentrations upon ICU admission are low in severe COVID-19 pneumonia patients but are not associated with poor outcomes. However, low lipoprotein concentrations in the case of bacterial superinfection during ICU hospitalization are associated with mortality, which reinforces the potential role of these particles during bacterial sepsis.

Abstract
The middle meningeal artery is the major human dural artery. Its origin and course can vary a great deal in relation, not only with the embryologic development of the hyostapedial system, but also because of the relationship of this system with the ICA, ophthalmic artery, trigeminal artery, and inferolateral trunk. After summarizing these systems in the first part our review, our purpose is to describe, in this second part, the anatomy, the possible origins, and courses of the middle meningeal artery. This review is enriched by the correlation of each variant to the related embryologic explanation as well as by some clinical cases shown in the figures. We discuss, in conclusion, some clinical conditions that require detailed knowledge of possible variants of the middle meningeal artery.

Abstract
This study aims to characterize the response of durum wheat to different concentrations of Cd found in agricultural soils. One French durum wheat cultivar (i.e. Sculptur) was exposed to low concentrations of Cd (5 nM or 100 nM) in hydroponics. After anthesis, the plants were fed with a solution enriched with the stable isotope 111Cd to trace the newly absorbed Cd. Plants were sampled at anthesis and grain maturity to assess how plant growth, Cd uptake and partitioning among organs, as well as Cd remobilization, differed between the two Cd exposure levels. Durum wheat did not show any visual symptoms of Cd toxicity, regardless of which Cd treatment was applied. However, post-anthesis durum wheat growth was 14% penalized at 100 nM due to the large transpiration-based accumulation of Cd in leaves at this stage. The allocation of Cd to the grains was not restricted but enhanced at 100 nM compared to 5 nM. Both the root-to-shoot Cd translocation and the fraction of aboveground Cd allocated to grains were higher in plants exposed to 100 nM. Cadmium was remobilized exclusively from roots and stems, and remobilized Cd contributed on average to 40-45% of the Cd accumulated in mature grains, regardless of which Cd treatment was applied. The relevance of these results to decreasing the concentration of Cd in durum wheat grains is discussed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Moyamoya disease is a chronic neurovascular steno-occlusive disease of the internal carotid artery and its main branches, associated with the development of compensatory vascular collaterals. Literature is lacking about the precise description of these compensatory vascular systems. Usually, the posterior circulation is less affected, and its vascular flow could compensate the hypoperfusion of the ICA territories. The aim of this study was to describe these natural connections between the posterior cerebral artery and the anterior cerebral artery necessary to compensate the lack of perfusion of the anterior cerebral artery territories in the Moyamoya population. MATERIALS AND METHODS All patients treated for Moyamoya disease from 2004 to 2018 in 4 neurosurgical centers with available cerebral digital subtraction angiography were included. Forty patients (80 hemispheres) with the diagnosis of Moyamoya disease were evaluated. The presence of anastomoses between the posterior cerebral artery and the anterior cerebral artery was found in 31 hemispheres (38.7%). RESULTS Among these 31 hemispheres presenting with posterior cerebral artery-anterior cerebral artery anastomoses, the most frequently encountered collaterals were branches from the posterior callosal artery (20%) and the posterior choroidal arteries (20%). Another possible connection found was pio-pial anastomosis between cortical branches of the posterior cerebral artery and the anterior cerebral artery (15%). We also proposed a 4-grade classification based on the competence of these anastomoses to supply retrogradely the territories of the anterior cerebral artery. CONCLUSIONS We found 3 different types of anastomoses between the anterior and posterior circulations, with different abilities to compensate the anterior circulation. Their development depends on the perfusion needs of the territories of the anterior cerebral artery and can provide the retrograde refilling of the anterior cerebral artery branches.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Keyhole approaches have lately sparked strong interest because these approaches address skull base pathologies as reported by Eroglu et al. (World Neurosurg, 2019); Hickmann, Gaida, and Reisch (Acta Neurochir (Wien) 159:881-887, 2017); Jallo and Bognar (Neurosurgery, 2006); and Poblete et al. (J Neurosurg 122:1274-1282, 2015), minimizing brain retraction and improving cosmetic results. We describe the step-by-step surgical technique to drain a suprasellar arachnoid cyst by a supraorbital approach. METHOD The eyebrow incision is a direct route to expose the supraorbital corridor and even if it is smaller than a pterional approach, it permits to open the cisterns and to visualize neurovascular structures. The arachnoid cyst could be safely drained and a T-tube is placed. CONCLUSION This technique represents a suitable option for suprasellar arachnoid cyst, avoiding more extended and invasive approaches.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Surgical resection is usually considered as the first-line curative strategy for low-grade (Spetzler-Martin grade I-II) brain arteriovenous malformations because it has a high cure rate and low complications. The role of endovascular treatment remains to be clarified in this indication, especially after A Randomized Trial of Unruptured Brain Arteriovenous Malformations. Our objective was to assess the safety and efficacy of first-line endovascular treatment in low-grade brain arteriovenous malformation management at our institution. MATERIALS AND METHODS Patients with low-grade brain arteriovenous malformations treated primarily with embolization in our department between January 2005 and December 2015 were retrieved from our prospectively collected registry. The primary outcome was the brain arteriovenous malformation obliteration rate, and secondary outcomes were disability or death secondary to brain arteriovenous malformation embolization assessed through modification of the modified Rankin Scale. RESULTS Two hundred twenty-four patients completed endovascular treatment during the study period and represent our study population. Complete exclusion of brain arteriovenous malformations was achieved in 205 patients (92%), including 62.1% of brain arteriovenous malformation exclusions after a single endovascular treatment session. One patient died of a hemorrhagic complication after endovascular treatment, leading to a mortality rate of 0.4%. Twelve patients (5%) kept a permanent neurologic deficit secondary to a complication of the endovascular treatment. An overall good outcome (mRS 0-2) was reported in 179 patients (80%). CONCLUSIONS Endovascular treatment might be a suitable alternative to surgical resection for complete exclusion of selected low-grade brain arteriovenous malformations.

Twenty-two healthy young adults (19-37 years old) were instructed to try not to step in response to 86 different force/time combinations of forward waist-pulls. The forces at which 50% of subjects stepped (F50) were identified for each tested perturbation durations. Results showed that F50 decreased hyperbolically when the perturbation's duration increased and converged toward a constant value (about 10%BW) for longer perturbations (over 1500 ms). The effect of perturbation duration was critical for the shortest perturbations (less than 1 s). In parallel, a simple function was proposed to estimate this stepping boundary. Considering the dynamics of a linear inverted pendulum + foot model and simple balance recovery reactions, we could express the maximum pulling force that can be withstood without stepping as a simple function of the perturbation duration. When used with values of the main model parameters determined experimentally, this function replicated adequately the experimental results. This study demonstrates for the first time that perturbation duration has a major influence on the outcomes of compliant perturbations such as force-controlled pulls. The stepping boundary corresponds to a constant perturbation force-duration product and is largely explained by only two parameters: the reaction time and the displacement of the center of pressure within the functional base of support. Future work should investigate pathological populations and additional parameters characterizing the perturbation time-profile such as the time derivative of the perturbation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Moyamoya disease is a progressive neurovascular pathology defined by steno-occlusive disease of the distal internal carotid artery and associated with the development of compensatory vascular collaterals. The etiology and exact anatomy of vascular collaterals have not been extensively studied. The aim of this study was to describe the anatomy of collaterals developed between the ophthalmic artery and the anterior cerebral artery in a Moyamoya population. MATERIALS AND METHODS All patients treated for Moyamoya disease from 2004 to 2016 in 4 neurosurgical centers with available cerebral digital subtraction angiography were included. Sixty-three cases were evaluated, and only 38 met the inclusion criteria. Two patients had a unilateral cervical internal carotid occlusion that limited analysis of ophthalmic artery collaterals to one hemisphere. This study is consequently based on the analysis of 74 cerebral hemispheres. RESULTS Thirty-eight patients fulfilled the inclusion criteria. The most frequently encountered anastomosis between the ophthalmic artery and cerebral artery was a branch of the anterior ethmoidal artery (31.1%, 23 hemispheres). In case of proximal stenosis of the anterior cerebral artery, a collateral from the posterior ethmoidal artery could be visualized (16 hemispheres, 21.6%). One case (1.4%) of anastomosis between the lacrimal artery and the middle meningeal artery that permitted the vascularization of a middle cerebral artery territory was also noted. CONCLUSIONS Collaterals from the ophthalmic artery are frequent in Moyamoya disease. Their development depends on the perfusion needs of the anterior cerebral artery territories. Three other systems of compensation could be present (callosal circle, leptomeningeal anastomosis, and duro-pial anastomoses).
