Abstract
Landlocking of diadromous fish in freshwater systems can have significant genomic consequences. For instance, the loss of the migratory life stage can dramatically reduce gene flow across populations, leading to increased genetic structuring and stronger effects of local adaptation. These genomic consequences have been well-studied in some mainland systems, but the evolutionary impacts of landlocking in island ecosystems are largely unknown. In this study, we used a genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS) approach to examine the evolutionary history of landlocking in common smelt (Retropinna retropinna) on Chatham Island, a small isolated oceanic island 800 kilometres east of mainland New Zealand. We examined the relationship between Chatham Island and mainland smelt and used coalescent analyses to test the number and timing of landlocking events on Chatham Island. Our genomic analysis, based on 21,135 SNPs across 169 individuals, revealed that the Chatham Island smelt was genomically distinct from the mainland New Zealand fish, consistent with a single ancestral colonisation event of Chatham Island in the Pleistocene. Significant genetic structure was also evident within the Chatham Island smelt, with a diadromous Chatham Island smelt group, along with three geographically structured landlocked groups. Coalescent demographic analysis supported three independent landlocking events, with this loss of diadromy significantly pre-dating human colonisation. Our results illustrate how landlocking of diadromous fish can occur repeatedly across a narrow spatial scale, and highlight a unique system to study the genomic basis of repeated adaptation.

Abstract
Fish viromes often provide insights into the origin and evolution of viruses affecting tetrapods, including those associated with imporant human diseases. However, despite fish being the most diverse vertebrate group, their viruses are still understudied. We investigated the viromes of fish on Chatham Island (Rēkohu), a geographically isolated island housing 9% of New Zealand's threatened endemic fish species. Using metatranscriptomics, we analyzed samples from seven host species across 16 waterbodies. We identified 19 fish viruses, including 16 potentially novel species, expanding families such as the Coronaviridae, Hantaviridae, Poxviridae, and the recently proposed Tosoviridae. Surprisingly, virome composition was not influenced by the ecological factors measured and smelt (Retropinna retropinna) viromes were consistent across lakes despite differences in host life history, seawater influence, and community richness. Overall, fish viromes across Rēkohu were highly diverse and revealed a long history of co-divergence between host and virus despite their unique and geographically isolated ecosystem.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Frailty is a medical syndrome characterised by reduced physiological reserve and increased vulnerability to stressors. Data regarding the relationship between frailty and atrial fibrillation (AF) are still inconsistent. OBJECTIVES We aim to perform a comprehensive evaluation of frailty in a large European cohort of AF patients. METHODS A 40-item frailty index (FI) was built according to the accumulation of deficits model in the AF patients enrolled in the ESC-EHRA EORP-AF General Long-Term Registry. Association of baseline characteristics, clinical management, quality of life, healthcare resources use and risk of outcomes with frailty was examined. RESULTS Among 10,177 patients [mean age (standard deviation) 69.0 (11.4) years, 4,103 (40.3%) females], 6,066 (59.6%) were pre-frail and 2,172 (21.3%) were frail, whereas only 1,939 (19.1%) were considered robust. Baseline thromboembolic and bleeding risks were independently associated with increasing FI. Frail patients with AF were less likely to be treated with oral anticoagulants (OACs) (odds ratio 0.70, 95% confidence interval 0.55-0.89), especially with non-vitamin K antagonist OACs and managed with a rhythm control strategy, compared with robust patients. Increasing frailty was associated with a higher risk for all outcomes examined, with a non-linear exponential relationship. The use of OAC was associated with a lower risk of outcomes, except in patients with very/extremely high frailty. CONCLUSIONS In this large cohort of AF patients, there was a high burden of frailty, influencing clinical management and risk of adverse outcomes. The clinical benefit of OAC is maintained in patients with high frailty, but not in very high/extremely frail ones.

Abstract
Viruses that infect fish are understudied, yet they provide important evolutionary context to the viruses that infect terrestrial vertebrates. We surveyed gill tissue meta-transcriptomes collected from two species of native freshwater fish from Aotearoa New Zealand—Retropinna retropinna and Gobiomorphus cotidianus. A total of 64 fish were used for gill tissue meta-transcriptomic sequencing, from populations with contrasting life histories—landlocked (i.e., lacustrine) and diadromous—on the South Island and Chatham Islands. We observed that both viral richness and taxonomic diversity were significantly associated with life history and host species, with lacustrine R. retropinna characterised by higher viral alpha diversity than diadromous R. retropinna. Additionally, we observed transcripts of fish viruses from 12 vertebrate host-associated virus families, and phylogenetically placed eight novel RNA viruses and three novel DNA viruses in the Astroviridae, Paramyxoviridae, Orthomyxoviridae, Rhabdoviridae, Totiviridae, Poxviridae, Alloherpesviridae, and Adintoviridae in their evolutionary contexts. These results represent an important survey of the viruses that infect two widespread native fish species in New Zealand, and provide insight useful for future fish virus surveys.

Abstract
Anthropogenic environmental change can underpin major shifts in natural selective regimes, and can thus alter the evolutionary trajectories of wild populations. However, little is known about the evolutionary impacts of deforestation-one of the most pervasive human-driven changes to terrestrial ecosystems globally. Absence of forest cover (i.e. exposure) has been suggested to play a role in selecting for insect flightlessness in montane ecosystems. Here, we capitalize on human-driven variation in alpine treeline elevation in New Zealand to test whether anthropogenic deforestation has caused shifts in the distributions of flight-capable and flightless phenotypes in a wing-polymorphic lineage of stoneflies from the Zelandoperla fenestrata species complex. Transect sampling revealed sharp transitions from flight-capable to flightless populations with increasing elevation. However, these phenotypic transitions were consistently delineated by the elevation of local treelines, rather than by absolute elevation, providing a novel example of human-driven evolution in response to recent deforestation. The inferred rapid shifts to flightlessness in newly deforested regions have implications for the evolution and conservation of invertebrate biodiversity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES People who are living with dementia typically experience difficulties in completing multi-step, everyday tasks. However, digital technology such as touchscreen tablets provide a means of delivering concise personalised prompts that combine audio, text and pictures. This study was one component of a broader, mixed methods study that tested how an application (app) -based prompter running on a touchscreen tablet computer could support everyday activities in individuals with mild to moderate dementia. In this study we set out to understand the experiences of people living with dementia and their primary carer in using the prompter over a four-week period. METHOD We collected qualitative data using semi-structured interviews from 26 dyads, composed of a person living with dementia and their carer. Dyads were interviewed at the start and end of this period. Transcripts were then analysed using thematic analysis. RESULTS The study identified three overarching themes related to: participants' attitudes towards the technology; their judgements about how useful the prompter would be; and the emotional impact of using it. CONCLUSION Consistent with the Technology Acceptance Model, carers and participants were influenced by their approaches to technology and determined the usefulness of the prompter according to whether it worked for them and fitted into their routines. In addition, participants' decisions about using the prompter were also determined by the extent to which doing so would impact on their self-identity.

Abstract
Foraging niche variation within a species can contribute to the maintenance of phenotypic diversity. The multiniche model posits that phenotypes occupying different niches can contribute to the maintenance of balanced polymorphisms. Using coastal populations of black bears (Ursus americanus kermodei) from British Columbia, Canada, we examined potential foraging niche divergence between phenotypes (black and white "Spirit" coat color) and between genotypes (black-coated homozygote and heterozygous). We applied the Bayesian multivariate models, with biotracers of diet (δ13C and δ15N) together comprising the response variable, to draw inference about foraging niche variation. Variance-covariance matrices from multivariate linear mixed-effect models were visualized as the Bayesian standard ellipses in δ13C and δ15N isotopic space to assess potential seasonal and annual niche variation between phenotypes and genotypes. We did not detect a difference in annual isotopic foraging niche area in comparisons between genotypes or phenotypes. Consistent with previous field experimental and isotopic analyses, however, we found that white phenotype Spirit bears were modestly more enriched in δ15N during the fall foraging season, though with our modest sample sizes these results were not significant. Although also not statistically significant, variation in isotopic niches between genotypes revealed that heterozygotes were moderately more enriched in δ13C along hair segments grown during fall foraging compared with black-coated homozygotes. To the extent to which the pattern of elevated δ15N and δ13C may signal the consumption of salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.), as well as the influence of salmon consumption on reproductive fitness, these results suggest that black-coated heterozygotes could have a minor selective advantage in the fall compared with black-coated homozygotes. More broadly, our multivariate approach, coupled with knowledge of genetic variation underlying a polymorphic trait, provides new insight into the potential role of a multiniche mechanism in maintaining this rare morph of conservation priority in Canada's Great Bear Rainforest and could offer new understanding into polymorphisms in other systems.

Animal populations can exhibit considerable interindividual variation in both behavioral traits and niche use, but the potential connections between these characteristics are rarely compared for the same individuals. We aimed to test whether behavioral syndromes were predictive of individual diet or microhabitat in a native New Zealand freshwater fish, Gobiomorphus cotidianus. We carried out laboratory behavioral assays and repeated habitat and diet measurements in a seminatural mesocosm system. We found considerable repeatability in individual behavior, largely consistent with a proactive/reactive behavioral syndrome. We also found modest individual repeatability in microhabitat use and relatively strong individual specialization in diet. However, no measure of niche use in the mesocosms was significantly predicted by individual personality. Further studies of this type will be needed to assess whether links between individual behavior and resource use are more important in other species or ecological contexts.

Abstract
Background:Physical activity (PA) has been identified as a primary treatment option for people living with axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) [1]. Yet, people living with axSpA can find it difficult to maintain PA at levels required to gain the evidenced benefits [2]. Intensive rehabilitation programmes harness the benefits of physical activity, but little is known about how to support PA maintenance when patients return to everyday life. The perspectives’ of health professionals involved in rehabilitation programmes can provide important and rich insights into how people living with axSpA could be helped to maintain their PA.Objectives:To explore health professionals‘ experiences of supporting PA maintenance during and after a rehabilitation programme for those living with axial spondyloarthritis.Methods:A qualitative study was conducted using semi-structured interviews. Nine health professionals (i.e., 4 physiotherapists; 1 clinical nurse specialist; 1 rheumatology SpR; 1 psychologist; 1 occupational therapist; and 1 podiatrist) who contribute to a rehabilitation programme were recruited from the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases in Bath, UK (Mtime contributing to course = 6.79 yrs, range 1-19.25 yrs; contact time over course range = 1 to 45 hrs). Interviews were audio recorded, transcribed verbatim, and a thematic analysis employed [3].Results:Maintaining a physically active lifestyle is a challenge for those living with axSpA and is an issue that is currently not being addressed. Health professionals’ perspectives on supporting PA maintenance was illustrated through four main themes: (1) Social environment (group dynamic, importance of others with the same condition, immersion of the disease, external peer groups); (2) Re-framing (education, ownership, exercise off the pedestal, combating fear, routine and habit); (3) PA support (enjoyment and interest, PA as flexible, encouragement and importance, balance and realistic expectations, internal and external feedback); and (4) Challenges for health professionals (training, resources, knowledge of transition process to everyday life, difficulty motivating). The reasons why people engage in PA play a key role within each of these themes.Conclusion:Results emphasize the current lack of support for the maintenance of PA and the complexities and challenges involved in maintaining PA for people living with axSpA. Interventions to support PA maintenance should pay particular attention to the importance of socially supportive environments, the need for enjoyment, and the use of internal and external feedback. Effects of fixatives on stable isotopes of fish muscle tissue: implications for trophic studies on preserved specimens. Abstract
Isotopic ecology has been widely used to understand spatial connectivity and trophic interactions in marine systems. However, its potential for monitoring an ecosystem's health and function has been hampered by the lack of consistent sample storage and long-term studies. Preserved specimens from museum collections are a valuable source of tissue for analyses from ancient and pre-modern times, but isotopic signatures are known to be affected by commonly used fixatives. The aim of the present study was to understand the effects of fixatives on isotopic signatures of bulk tissue (δ13 Cm and δ15 Nm ) and amino acids (δ13 CAA and δ15 NAA ) of fish muscle and to provide correction equations for the isotopic shifts. Two specimens of each: blue cod (Parapercis colias), blue warehou (Seriolella brama), and king salmon (Oncorhynchus tschawytscha) were sampled at five locations along their dorsal musculature, at four time periods: (1) fresh, (2) after 1 month preserved in formalin, and after (3) 3 and (4) 12 months fixed in either ethanol or isopropanol. Lipid content was positively correlated with C:N ratio (r² = 0.83) and had a significant effect on δ13 C after treatments, but not on δ15 N. C:N ratio (for δ13 Cm ) and percent N (for δ15 Nm ) from preserved specimens contributed to the most parsimonious mixed models, which explained 79% of the variation due to fixation and preservation for δ13 C and 81% for δ15 N. δ13 CAA were generally not affected by fixatives and preservatives, while most δ15 NAA showed different signatures between treatments. δ15 NAA variations did not affect the magnitude of differences between amino acids, allowing scientists to retrieve ecological information (e.g., trophic level) independently of time under preservation. Corrections were applied to the raw data of the experiment, highlighting the importance of δ13 Cm and δ15 Nm correction when fish muscle tissues from wet collections are compared to fresh samples. Our results make it possible to retrieve δ13 Cm , δ15 Nm , δ13 CAA , and δ15 NAA from museum specimens and can be applied to some of the fundamental questions in ecology, such as trophic baseline shifts and changes in community's food web structure through time.

Abstract
Competition plays a central role in the maintenance of biodiversity. A backbone of classic niche theory is that local coexistence of competitors is favoured by the contraction or divergence of species' niches. However, this effect should depend on the diversity of resources available in the local environment, particularly when resources vary in multiple ecological dimensions. Here, we investigated how available resource breadth (i.e. prey diversity) and competition together shape multidimensional niche variation (between and within individuals) and interspecific niche overlap in 42 populations of congeneric tropical frog species. We modelled realized niches in two key trophic dimensions (prey size and carbon stable isotopes) and sampled available food resources to quantify two-dimensional resource breadth. We found a 14-fold variation in multidimensional population niche width across populations, most of which was accounted for by within-individual diet variation. This striking variation was predicted by an interaction whereby individual niche breadth increased with resource breadth and decreased with the number of congeneric competitors. These ecological gradients also interact to influence the degree of niche overlap between species, which surprisingly decreased with population total niche width, providing novel insights on how similar species can coexist in local communities. Together, our results emphasize that patterns of exploitation of resources in multiple dimensions are driven by both competitive interactions and extrinsic factors such as local resource breadth.

Abstract
Background
Trastuzumab is highly effective in the treatment of breast cancer, and is often used as an adjuvant therapy. Due to its potential cardiotoxicity, serial monitoring of cardiac function is vital. Ejection fraction (EF) by two-dimensional echocardiography is routinely used but has limitations in measurement variability. Myocardial deformation imaging, in particular Global Longitudinal Strain (GLS), can detect pre-clinical myocardial dysfunction. However, its use is not yet adopted into routine clinical practice.
Aims
Our aim was to ascertain if a clinically significant reduction in GLS (≥11% from baseline) occurred before the onset of EF reduction, in patients who developed cardiotoxicity whilst receiving trastuzumab.
Methods
Between January 2014 and January 2019, 235 consecutive patients received trastuzumab and underwent serial echocardiography at 3 monthly intervals at our institute. Cardiotoxicity is defined as a ≥10% EF reduction from baseline or an EF <50%. Women who developed cardiotoxicity as defined by this change in EF were retrospectively studied.
Two-dimensional speckle tracking was used to derive peak longitudinal strain in each myocardial segment from the apical four-, three- and two-chamber view images. GLS was taken as the average value of all these segments. The median time to ≥11% GLS reduction and ≥10% EF reduction or EF <50% was compared.
Results
Thirteen women (mean age 53 ± 9.5 years) developed cardiotoxicity. EF was 61.8 ± 4.4% at baseline and 45.7 ± 7.5% following therapy (p = 0.00). A ≥11% reduction in GLS from baseline was observed in all patients: GLS -20.2 ± 1.5% and -15.6 ± 2.1%, p = 0.00. The median time to cardiotoxicity as defined by EF and GLS was 6 months and 3 months, respectively (p = 0.031), as shown in Table 1. Repeatability analysis showed both EF and GLS measurements in our cohort have good measurement reproducibility. Inter-observer intraclass correlation (ICC) for EF and GLS were 0.912 and 0.913, respectively. Intra-observer ICC for EF and GLS were 0.925 and 0.900, respectively.
Conclusion
Cardiotoxicity developed in a significant portion (6%) of our patients receiving trastuzumab. As a reduction in GLS was detectable early and preceded that of EF by 3 months, this may represent a therapeutic window for initiation of cardio-protective medication, if and when the use of GLS is incorporated into routine practice for cardiotoxicity surveillance.

Abstract
Intraspecific trait variation may result from "carryover effects" of variability of environments experienced at an earlier life stage. This phenomenon is particularly relevant in partially migrating populations composed of individuals with divergent early life histories. While many studies have addressed the causes of partial migration, few have investigated the consequences for between-individual variability later in life.We studied carryover effects of larval environment in a facultatively diadromous New Zealand fish, Gobiomorphus cotidianus, along an estuarine salinity gradient. We investigated the implications of varying environmental conditions during this critical stage of ontogeny for adult phenotype.We inferred past environmental history of wild-caught adult fish using otolith microchemistry (Sr/Ca) as a proxy for salinity. We tested for main and interactive effects of larval and adult environment on a suite of traits, including growth rates, behavior (exploration and activity), parasite load, and diet (stable isotopes and gut contents).We found a Sr/Ca consistent with a continuum from freshwater to brackish environments, and with different trajectories from juvenile to adult habitat. Fish with Sr/Ca indicating upstream migration were more vulnerable to trematode infection, suggesting a mismatch to freshwater habitat. Diet analysis suggested an interactive effect of larval and adult environments on trophic position and diet preference, while behavioral traits were unrelated to environment at any life stage. Growth rates did not seem to be affected by past environment.Overall, we show that early life environment can have multiple effects on adult performance and ecology, with the potential for lifetime fitness trade-offs associated with life history. Our study highlights that even relatively minor variation in rearing conditions may be enough to generate individual variation in natural populations.

Abstract
Variation in behavioral traits among individuals within a population can have implications for food webs and ecosystems. Temperature change also alters food web structure and function, but potential interactions between warming and intraspecific behavioral variation are largely unexplored. We aimed to test how increased temperature, individual activity level of a predatory backswimmer (Anisops assimilis), and their interaction influenced the strength of top-down control of zooplankton and phytoplankton. We used stable isotopes to support our assumption that the study population of A. assimilis is zooplanktivorous, and behavioral trials to confirm that activity level is a repeatable trait. We established freshwater microcosms to test for effects of warming, backswimmer presence, and backswimmer behavioral type on zooplankton density, zooplankton composition, and phytoplankton chlorophyll a. Top-down control was present and was generally stronger at increased temperature. There was no indication that predator behavioral type influenced the strength of top-down control either on its own or interactively with temperature. Predator behavioral type may not be associated with ecologically important function in this species at the temporal and spatial scales addressed in this study, but the links between behavior, temperature, and food web processes are worthy of broader exploration.

Abstract
The ecological multifunctionality of colour often results in multiple selective pressures operating on a single trait. Most research on colour evolution focuses on males because they are the most conspicuous sex in most species. This bias can limit inferences about the ecological drivers of colour evolution. For example, little is known about population divergence in colour of female threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus), which is among the most intensively-studied model vertebrates in evolution, ecology, and behaviour. In contrast, the evolution and ecology of colour in male stickleback has received considerable attention. One aspect of female colouration that is lacking previous research is non-ornamental body colour. Non-ornamental colour can play defensive and social roles, and indicate other aspects of female stickleback ecology. To remedy this knowledge gap, we measured the colour and brightness of one dorsal and one ventral lateral area on female stickleback from nine lake populations on Vancouver Island. We found that lake populations varied in overall colour brightness and dorso-ventral contrast. In addition, we found that female brightness increased with lake size, indicating potential ecological drivers of these colour differences. Our results demonstrate that there is substantial scope for future research on female colour diversification, which has been overlooked because past researchers focused on dramatic male nuptial colours.

Abstract
Phenotypic traits may be linked to speciation in two distinct ways: character values may influence the rate of speciation or diversification in the trait may be associated with speciation events. Traits involved in signal transmission, such as the dewlap of Anolis lizards, are often involved in the speciation process. The dewlap is an important visual signal with roles in species recognition and sexual selection, and dewlaps vary among species in relative size as well as colour and pattern. We compile a dataset of relative dewlap size digitized from photographs of 184 anole species from across the genus' geographical range. We use phylogenetic comparative methods to test two hypotheses: that larger dewlaps are associated with higher speciation rates, and that relative dewlap area diversifies according to a speciational model of evolution. We find no evidence of trait-dependent speciation, indicating that larger signals do not enhance any role the dewlap has in promoting speciation. Instead, we find a signal of mixed speciational and gradual trait evolution, with a particularly strong signal of speciational change in the dewlaps of mainland lineages. This indicates that dewlap size diversifies in association with the speciation process, suggesting that divergent selection may play a role in the macroevolution of this signalling trait.

Abstract
Assortative mating - correlation between male and female traits - is common within populations and has the potential to promote genetic diversity and in some cases speciation. Despite its importance, few studies have sought to explain variation in the extent of assortativeness across populations. Here, we measure assortative mating based on an ecologically important trait, diet as inferred from stable isotopes, in 16 unmanipulated lake populations of three-spine stickleback. As predicted, we find a tendency toward positive assortment on the littoral-pelagic axis, although the magnitude is consistently weak. These populations vary relatively little in the strength of assortativeness, and what variation occurs is not explained by hypothesized drivers including habitat cosegregation, the potential for disruptive selection, costs to choosiness, and the strength of the relationship between diet and body size. Our results support recent findings that most assortative mating is positive, while suggesting that new approaches may be required to identify the environmental variables that drive the evolution of nonrandom mating within populations.

Abstract
Phylogenetic diversity (PD) is a measure of biodiversity based on the evolutionary history of species. Here, we discuss several optimization problems related to the use of PD, and the more general measure split diversity (SD), in conservation prioritization.Depending on the conservation goal and the information available about species, one can construct optimization routines that incorporate various conservation constraints. We demonstrate how this information can be used to select sets of species for conservation action. Specifically, we discuss the use of species' geographic distributions, the choice of candidates under economic pressure, and the use of predator-prey interactions between the species in a community to define viability constraints.Despite such optimization problems falling into the area of NP hard problems, it is possible to solve them in a reasonable amount of time using integer programming. We apply integer linear programming to a variety of models for conservation prioritization that incorporate the SD measure.We exemplarily show the results for two data sets: the Cape region of South Africa and a Caribbean coral reef community. Abstract
Sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) is not currently a commercial crop in Georgia, but experimental plantings as a winter rotational crop are promising in terms of yield and industrial sugar production (T. Brenneman, personal communication). A disease outbreak of suspected bacterial origin occurred in sugar beet plots (experimental lines Beta Seed energy beet 'BTS ENC115,' 'BTS EGC184,' 'BTS EGC195,' and 'BTS 1EN6702') in Tift Co., GA, in December 2012, at ~35% incidence. Foliar symptoms included circular to irregular spots, each with a tan center and dark margin. Ten leaves/experimental line with leaf spot symptoms were collected, and bacterial isolations made on King's B agar medium. After 48 h of incubation, cream-colored, fluorescent yellow, round colonies with smooth margins were isolated. The isolates were each gram negative, oxidase negative, non-pectolytic on potato, arginine dihydrolase negative, produced levan, and gave a hypersensitivity response (HR) on tobacco. These characteristics indicated that the isolates belonged to Pseudomonas syringae van Hall LOPAT group Ia (3). The 16S-23S rRNA (internal transcribed regions) (1) from four foliar isolates (SB-1, SB-2, SB-3, and SB-4), one/experimental line, was amplified, and the resultant PCR products were sequenced and BLAST searched in GenBank. The 16S-23S rRNA sequences matched those of P. syringae pv. syingae (Pss) (KF023189) and P. syringae pv. aptata (Psa) (AY342167.1) with 96 to 98% and 97 to 99% sequence identity, respectively. Also, the percent similarity of the 16S-23S rRNA sequences among the four isolates was >99% (KJ922021 to 24 for SB-1 to SB-4, respectively). The four test isolates also had ≤89 and ≤99% similarity with Pss and Psa, respectively, when tested with BIOLOG (Hayward, CA). In addition, four sugarbeet isolates along with a type strain of Psa (NCPPB 3539) were amplified using a PCR primer pair that detected the presence of the avrPphE gene, an avirulence gene present in Psa but absent in Pss (2). The type strain of Pss (NCPPB 1770) was not amplified using this primer pair. BOX-PCR analysis gave identical banding patterns for the four isolates as that of a type strain of Psa. In two independent experiments, 3-week-old seedlings of the sugar beet cv. Beta EGR099 (n = 10 seedlings/isolate/experiment) were spray-inoculated with a sterilized water suspension of 1 × 108 CFU/ml of each of the isolates. All of the inoculated seedlings developed symptoms (water-soaked lesions that developed into necrotic spots) 10 days after inoculation (DAI) in greenhouse conditions (~30°C and ~80% RH). All of the seedlings inoculated with the type strain of Psa also produced typical bacterial blight symptoms at 10 DAI. In contrast, five control seedlings inoculated with sterilized water remained asymptomatic, and target bacterial colonies were not re-isolated from the leaves of these plants. Bacterial colonies were re-isolated from symptomatic seedlings, and showed similar characteristics based on physiological tests, BIOLOG profile, BOX-PCR analysis, and positive amplification with the avrPphE PCR assay, which indicated that these strains were Psa. To our knowledge, this is the first report of Psa in sugarbeet in Georgia. The fact that a Psa strain was also isolated from a sugar beet seed lot (data not shown) suggested that the pathogen may have been introduced on contaminated seeds. Abstract
Antarctic notothenioid fishes provide a fascinating evolutionary laboratory for the study of adaptive radiation, as their diversification is linked to both isolation in an extreme environment and a key innovation that allows them to exploit it. In this issue of Molecular Ecology, Rutschmann et al. (2011) evaluate how dietary niche differences have evolved in notothenioids: rarely, or repeatedly in multiple lineages. The authors use stable isotopes to measure species’ use of benthic vs. pelagic resources and map resource use onto a molecular phylogeny. Their findings indicate that pelagic diets have evolved in multiple lineages in at least two families, indicating that dietary niche diversification has occurred repeatedly and in parallel.

Abstract
It has long been known that intraspecific variation impacts evolutionary processes, but only recently have its potential ecological effects received much attention. Theoretical models predict that genetic or phenotypic variance within species can alter interspecific interactions, and experiments have shown that genotypic diversity in clonal species can impact a wide range of ecological processes. To extend these studies to quantitative trait variation within populations, we experimentally manipulated the variance in body size of threespine stickleback in enclosures in a natural lake environment. We found that body size of stickleback in the lake is correlated with prey size and (to a lesser extent) composition, and that stickleback can exert top-down control on their benthic prey in enclosures. However, a six-fold contrast in body size variance had no effect on the degree of diet variation among individuals, or on the abundance or composition of benthic or pelagic prey. Interestingly, post-hoc analyses revealed suggestive correlations between the degree of diet variation and the strength of top-down control by stickleback. Our negative results indicate that, unless the correlation between morphology and diet is very strong, ecological variation among individuals may be largely decoupled from morphological variance. Consequently we should be cautious in our interpretation both of theoretical models that assume perfect correlations between morphology and diet, and of empirical studies that use morphological variation as a proxy for resource use diversity.

Abstract
Oceans are home to much of the world's biodiversity, but we know little about the processes driving speciation in marine ecosystems with few geographical barriers to gene flow. Ecological speciation resulting from divergent natural selection between ecological niches can occur in the face of gene flow. Sister species in the young and ecologically diverse rockfish genus Sebastes coexist in the northeast Pacific, implying that speciation may not require geographical isolation. Here, I use a novel phylogenetic comparative analysis to show that rockfish speciation is instead associated with divergence in habitat depth and depth-associated morphology, consistent with models of parapatric speciation. Using the same analysis, I find no support for alternative hypotheses that speciation involves divergence in diet or life history, or that speciation involves geographic isolation by latitude. These findings support the hypothesis that rockfishes undergo ecological speciation on an environmental gradient.

Abstract
A species's niche width reflects a balance between the diversifying effects of intraspecific competition and the constraining effects of interspecific competition. This balance shifts when a species from a competitive environment invades a depauperate habitat where interspecific competition is reduced. The resulting ecological release permits population niche expansion, via increased individual niche widths and/or increased among-individual variation. We report an experimental test of the theory of ecological release in three-spine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus). We factorially manipulated the presence or absence of two interspecific competitors: juvenile cut-throat trout (Oncorhynchus clarki) and prickly sculpin (Cottus asper). Consistent with the classic niche variation hypothesis, release from trout competition increased stickleback population niche width via increased among-individual variation, while individual niche widths remained unchanged. In contrast, release from sculpin competition had no effect on population niche width, because increased individual niche widths were offset by decreased between-individual variation. Our results confirm that ecological release from interspecific competition can lead to increases in niche width, and that these changes can occur on behavioural time scales. Importantly, we find that changes in population niche width are decoupled from changes in the niche widths of individuals within the population.

If natural communities are assembled according to deterministic rules, coexisting species will represent a nonrandom subset of the potential species pool. We tested for signatures of assembly rules in the distribution of species' traits in Pacific rockfish (Sebastes spp.) assemblages. We used morphology, dietary niche (estimated with stable nitrogen isotopes), and distribution data to identify traits that relate to local-scale resource use (the alpha-niche) and to environmental gradients (the beta-niche). We showed that gill raker morphology was related to trophic position (an alpha-niche axis), while relative eye size was associated with depth habitat (a beta-niche axis). We therefore hypothesized that, within assemblages of coexisting rockfish species, the gill raker trait would be overdispersed (evenly spaced) due to limiting similarity, while relative eye size would be clustered due to environmental filtering. We examined the evolutionary relatedness of coexisting species to ask whether phylogenetic community structure and trait distributions gave similar indications about the roles of assembly processes. We tested the trait distributions and phylogenetic structure of 30 published rockfish assemblages against a null model of random community assembly. As predicted, the gill raker trait tended to be more evenly spaced than expected by chance, as did overall body size, while relative eye size was more clustered than expected. Phylogenetic community structure appeared to reflect historical dispersal and speciation and did not provide consistent support for assembly rules. Our results indicate that rockfish community assembly is nonrandom with regard to species' traits and show how distinguishing traits related to the alpha- and beta-niches and incorporating functional morphology can provide for powerful tests of assembly rules.

Abstract
The features that govern the stability and persistence of species interaction networks, such as food webs, remain elusive, but recent work suggests that the distribution and strength of trophic links play an important role. Potential omnivory-stability relationships have been investigated and debated extensively, but we still have a relatively poor understanding of how levels of omnivory relate to the stability of diverse food webs. Here, we use an evolutionary assembly model to investigate how different trade-offs in resource use influence both food web structure and dynamic stability during the assembly process. We build on a previous model by allowing speciation along with the evolution of two traits: body size and feeding-niche width. Across a wide range of conditions, the level of omnivory in a food web is positively related to its dynamic instability (variability and species turnover). Parameter values favoring omnivory also allow a wider range of phenotypes to invade, often displacing existing species. This high species turnover leaves signatures in reconstructed phylogenies, with shorter branches connecting extant species in more omnivorous food webs. Our findings suggest that features of the environment may influence both trophic structure and dynamic stability, leading to emergent omnivory-stability relationships.

Abstract
Adaptive divergence between adjoining populations reflects a balance between the diversifying effect of divergent selection and the potentially homogenizing effect of gene flow. In most models of migration-selection balance, gene flow is assumed to reflect individuals' inherent capacity to disperse, without regard to the match between individuals' phenotypes and the available habitats. However, habitat preferences can reduce dispersal between contrasting habitats, thereby alleviating migration load and facilitating adaptive divergence. We tested whether habitat preferences contribute to adaptive divergence in a classic example of migration-selection balance: parapatric lake and stream populations of three-spine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus). Using a mark-transplant-recapture experiment on morphologically divergent parapatric populations, we showed that 90% of lake and stream stickleback returned to their native habitat, reducing migration between habitats by 76%. Furthermore, we found that dispersal into a nonnative habitat was phenotype dependent. Stream fish moving into the lake were morphologically more lake-like than those returning to the stream (and the converse for lake fish entering the stream). The strong native habitat preference documented here increases the extent of adaptive divergence between populations two- to fivefold relative to expectations with random movement. These results illustrate the potential importance of adaptive habitat choice in driving parapatric divergence.

Abstract
The controversial nature of the CB(1) receptor antagonist, SR141716A, in the guinea-pig small intestine was investigated by comparing it with four analogues of Delta(8)-tetrahydrocannabinol (Delta(8)-THC): O-1184, O-1238, O-584 and O-1315. These compounds (10 - 1000 nM) inhibited the electrically-evoked contractions with a rank order of potency of O-1238>O-1184>O-584>O-1315. Log concentration-response curves for O-1238, O-1184 and O-1315 were significantly shifted to the right by SR141716A and the maxima were significantly less than that of the CB(1) agonist, WIN55212-2, an indication of partial agonism. Partial saturation of the triple bond in O-1184 to a cis double bond (O-1238) increased its potency as an agonist (pEC(50) from 6.42 to 7.63) and as an antagonist of WIN55212-2, (pK(B), from 8.36 to 9.49). Substitution of the terminal azide group by an ethyl group (O-584) or removal of the phenolic hydroxyl group (O-1315) had no significant effect on the agonist or antagonist potency. None of these analogues increased the twitch response in a manner resembling that of SR141716A. O-1184 (10 and 100 nM) shifted the log concentration-response curve of WIN55212-2 for inhibition of the twitch responses to the right with pK(B) values of 8.29 and 8.38, respectively. We conclude that these Delta(8)-THC analogues behave as partial agonists rather than silent antagonists at CB(1) binding sites in this tissue. There was no evidence of antagonism of endocannabinoids thus supporting the hypothesis that, in this tissue, SR141716A is an inverse agonist of constitutively active CB(1) receptors.
