Gut microbial GABAergic signaling improves stress-associated innate immunity to respiratory viral infection

INTRODUCTION

Epidemiological evidences reveal that populations with psychological stress have an increased likelihood of respiratory viral infection involving influenza A virus (IAV) and SARS-CoV-2.

OBJECTIVES

This study aims to explore the potential correlation between psychological stress and increased susceptibility to respiratory viral infections and how this may contribute to a more severe disease progression.

METHODS

A chronic restraint stress (CRS) mouse model was used to infect IAV and estimate lung inflammation. Alveolar macrophages (AMs) were observed in the numbers, function and metabolic-epigenetic properties. To confirm the central importance of the gut microbiome in stress-exacerbated viral pneumonia, mice were conducted through microbiome depletion and gut microbiome transplantation.

RESULTS

Stress exposure induced a decline in Lactobacillaceae abundance and hence γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) level in mice. Microbial-derived GABA was released in the peripheral and sensed by AMs via GABAAR, leading to enhanced mitochondrial metabolism and α-ketoglutarate (αKG) generation. The metabolic intermediator in turn served as the cofactor for the epigenetic regulator Tet2 to catalyze DNA hydroxymethylation and promoted the PPARγ-centered gene program underpinning survival, self-renewing, and immunoregulation of AMs. Thus, we uncover an unappreciated GABA/Tet2/PPARγ regulatory circuitry initiated by the gut microbiome to instruct distant immune cells through a metabolic-epigenetic program. Accordingly, reconstitution with GABA-producing probiotics, adoptive transferring of GABA-conditioned AMs, or resumption of pulmonary αKG level remarkably improved AMs homeostasis and alleviated severe pneumonia in stressed mice.

CONCLUSION

Together, our study identifies microbiome-derived tonic signaling tuned by psychological stress to imprint resident immune cells and defensive response in the lungs. Further studies are warranted to translate these findings, basically from murine models, into the individuals with psychiatric stress during respiratory viral infection.

Dual-Locked Fluorescent Probes Activated by Aminopeptidase N and the Tumor Redox Environment for High-Precision Imaging of Tumor Boundaries

Clear delineation of tumor margins is essential for accurate resection and decreased recurrence rate in the clinic. Fluorescence imaging is emerging as a promising alternative to traditional visual inspection by surgeons for intraoperative imaging. However, traditional probes lack accuracy in tumor diagnosis, making it difficult to depict tumor boundaries accurately. Herein, we proposed an offensive and defensive integration (ODI) strategy based on the "attack systems (invasive peptidase) and defense systems (reductive microenvironment)" of multi-dimensional tumor characteristics to design activatable fluorescent probes for imaging tumor boundaries precisely. Screened out from a series of ODI strategy-based probes, ANQ performed better than traditional probes based on tumor unilateral correlation by distinguishing between tumor cells and normal cells and minimizing false-positive signals from living metabolic organs. To further improve the signal-to-background ratio in vivo, derivatized FANQ, was prepared and successfully applied to distinguish orthotopic hepatocellular carcinoma tissues from adjacent tissues in mice models and clinical samples. This work highlights an innovative strategy to develop activatable probes for rapid diagnosis of tumors and high-precision imaging of tumor boundaries, providing more efficient tools for future clinical applications in intraoperative assisted resection.

NiCoP cocatalyst modified g-C3N4 as ohmic junction photocatalyst for efficient degradation of tetracycline under visible light

Increasing the electron-hole recombination rate in g-C3N4 can effectively improve its photocatalytic performance. In this work, NiCoP/g-C3N4 (NCP/PCN) composites with ohmic junction were formed by embedding granular NiCoP in irregularly porous g-C3N4. There was almost no barrier between the metal and the semiconductor in ohmic junction, which made it easier for electrons to slip from PCN to NCP along the curved energy band, and NCP acted as an electron collector to rapidly capture the slipping electrons. In addition, porous g-C3N4 prepared by supramolecular self-assembly could provide a shorter diffusion path for electrons. Thus, the electron-hole was effectively separated and the photocatalytic performance was improved. The band electronic structure and existence of ohmic junction in 7-NCP/PCN composite were demonstrated by XPS, ESR and DFT calculation. Finally, a reasonable photocatalytic degradation mechanism and possible tetracycline degradation path were proposed. This work has significant potential for providing an effective method for the design of non-precious metal photocatalysts.

Low-Temperature Vapor-Phase Growth of 2D Metal Chalcogenides

2D metal chalcogenides (MCs) have garnered significant attention from both scientific and industrial communities due to their potential in developing next-generation functional devices. Vapor-phase deposition methods have proven highly effective in fabricating high-quality 2D MCs. Nevertheless, the conventionally high thermal budgets required for synthesizing 2D MCs pose limitations, particularly in the integration of multiple components and in specialized applications (such as flexible electronics). To overcome these challenges, it is desirable to reduce the thermal energy requirements, thus facilitating the growth of various 2D MCs at lower temperatures. Numerous endeavors have been undertaken to develop low-temperature vapor-phase growth techniques for 2D MCs, and this review aims to provide an overview of the latest advances in low-temperature vapor-phase growth of 2D MCs. Initially, the review highlights the latest progress in achieving high-quality 2D MCs through various low-temperature vapor-phase techniques, including chemical vapor deposition (CVD), metal-organic CVD, plasma-enhanced CVD, atomic layer deposition (ALD), etc. The strengths and current limitations of these methods are also evaluated. Subsequently, the review consolidates the diverse applications of 2D MCs grown at low temperatures, covering fields such as electronics, optoelectronics, flexible devices, and catalysis. Finally, current challenges and future research directions are briefly discussed, considering the most recent progress in the field.

Total Synthesis of (±)-Rubriflordilactone A

A new and efficient synthesis of rubriflordilactone A has been realized. The key transformations include the following: (1) an intramolecular Prins cyclization to establish the seven-membered ring containing two contiguous stereocenters; (2) a Mukaiyama hydration/oxa-Michael cascade to construct the B-ring; and (3) an unprecedented stereocontrol intermolecular o-QM type [4 + 2]-cycloaddition to rapidly assemble core structure of rubriflordilactone A.

High-Density CoSe2 Sites Embedded within 2D Porous N-Doped Carbon for High-Performance Oxygen Reduction Reaction Electrocatalysis

Designing and fabricating efficient and stable nonprecious metal-based oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts is a pressing and challenging task for the pursuit of sustainable new energy devices. Herein, porous P-CoSe2@NC electrocatalysts with high-density carbon-coated CoSe2 sites were successfully fabricated based on a pyridyl-porphyrinic metal-organic framework (Co-TPyP MOF) via a molten salt-assisted synthesis method. The hierarchical pore and N-doping carbon substrate of P-CoSe2@NC promotes mass transfer and electron-transfer efficiency, which is beneficial to maximize CoSe2 site utilization. Well-designed P-CoSe2@NC exhibits efficient ORR catalytic activity with a high half-wave potential of 0.863 V and excellent catalytic stability. Meanwhile, rechargeable aqueous primary/quasi-solid-state ZABs based on a P-CoSe2@NC air cathode show a high peak power density and exceptional operating stability, catering to the demands of practical applications. The qualified performance and structure stability of the electrocatalytic system may be mainly attributed to the protection of the CoSe2 nanoparticle by the coated carbon layer. Given the rational design of the structure and the component of the electrocatalyst with enhanced ORR activity, we believe that this work has provided a reliable pathway to the development of high-performance transition-metal chalcogenides for energy-storage and -conversion devices.

Evolutionary novelties underlie sound production in baleen whales

Baleen whales (mysticetes) use vocalizations to mediate their complex social and reproductive behaviours in vast, opaque marine environments1. Adapting to an obligate aquatic lifestyle demanded fundamental physiological changes to efficiently produce sound, including laryngeal specializations2-4. Whereas toothed whales (odontocetes) evolved a nasal vocal organ5, mysticetes have been thought to use the larynx for sound production1,6-8. However, there has been no direct demonstration that the mysticete larynx can phonate, or if it does, how it produces the great diversity of mysticete sounds9. Here we combine experiments on the excised larynx of three mysticete species with detailed anatomy and computational models to show that mysticetes evolved unique laryngeal structures for sound production. These structures allow some of the largest animals that ever lived to efficiently produce frequency-modulated, low-frequency calls. Furthermore, we show that this phonation mechanism is likely to be ancestral to all mysticetes and shares its fundamental physical basis with most terrestrial mammals, including humans10, birds11, and their closest relatives, odontocetes5. However, these laryngeal structures set insurmountable physiological limits to the frequency range and depth of their vocalizations, preventing them from escaping anthropogenic vessel noise12,13 and communicating at great depths14, thereby greatly reducing their active communication range.

Exploring the importance of m5c in the diagnosis and subtype classification of COPD using the GEO database

BACKGROUND

5-Methylcytosine (m5C) is an mRNA modifier that is associated with the occurrence and development of viral infection, pulmonary fibrosis, lung cancer, and other diseases. However, the role of m5C regulators in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) remains unknown.

METHODS

In this study, by analysing the GSE42057 dataset, the differential expression of m5c regulators in the COPD group and control group was obtained, and a correlation analysis was conducted. The random forest model and support vector machine model were used to predict the occurrence of COPD. A nomogram model was also constructed to predict the prevalence of COPD. The COPD patients were divided into subtypes by consistent cluster analysis based on m5c methylation regulators. Immune cell infiltration was performed on the m5c methylation subtypes. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between m5c methylation subtypes were screened, and the DEGs were analysed by Gene Ontology (GO) Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG). Finally, we verified the expression of several m5C regulators and related pathways using a COPD cell model.

RESULTS

Seven m5c methylation regulators were differentially expressed. The random forest model based on the above genes was the most accurate for predicting the occurrence of COPD. A nomogram model based on the above genes could also accurately predict the prevalence of COPD, and the implementation of these models could benefit COPD patients. The consistent cluster analysis divided the COPD patients into two subtypes (Cluster A and Cluster B). The main component analysis algorithm determined the m5c methylation subtypes and found that patients in Cluster A had a higher m5c score than those in Cluster B. GO analysis of the DEGs between the m5c methylation COPD patient subtypes revealed that DEGS were mainly enriched in leukocyte-mediated immunity and regulation of T-cell activation. KEGG analysis revealed that DEGS were mainly enriched in Th1 and Th2 cell differentiation, neutrophil extracellular trap formation, and the NF-κB signalling pathway. Immunocyte correlation analysis revealed that Cluster B was associated with neutrophil- and macrophage-mediated immunity, while Cluster A was associated with CD4 + T-cell- and CD8 + T-cell-mediated immunity. Cell experiments have also verified some of the above research results.

CONCLUSION

The diagnosis and subtype classification of COPD patients based on m5c regulators may provide a new strategy for the diagnosis and treatment of COPD.

Porous carboxymethyl cellulose nanocrystalline imprinted composite aerogels for selective adsorption of gadolinium

Gadolinium is widely applied in medical and high-tech materials because of special magnetic properties. Recovery of gadolinium from waste rare earth products has both economic and environmental value. In this experiment, honeycomb porous composite aerogels were constructed using sericin and sodium alginate mixed with functionally modified carboxymethylated cellulose nanocrystals for the adsorption and separation of gadolinium ions. There were large numbers of carboxyl groups as well as hydroxyl groups on the surface of sodium alginate and filamentous protein, which provided more sites for the adsorption of gadolinium ions. Besides, a stable honeycomb structure appeared on the surface of composite aerogels when the mixture of filamentous protein and sodium alginate was 1:1, which increased the specific surface area of materials to 140.65 m2 g-1. Additionally, the imprinted composite aerogels Ic-CNC/SSA were prepared by virtue of the imprinting technology, enhancing the adsorption selectivity of composite aerogels for gadolinium. The adsorption experiments revealed that the maximum adsorption capacity of Ic-CNC/SSA reached 93.41 mg g-1 at pH 7.0, indicating good selective adsorption of gadolinium ions. In summary, such composite aerogels provide great potential and reference value for the selective adsorption of gadolinium ions in industry.

A self-centering and stiffness-controlled MEMS accelerometer

This paper presents a high-performance MEMS accelerometer with a DC/AC electrostatic stiffness tuning capability based on double-sided parallel plates (DSPPs). DC and AC electrostatic tuning enable the adjustment of the effective stiffness and the calibration of the geometric offset of the proof mass, respectively. A dynamical model of the proposed accelerometer was developed considering both DC/AC electrostatic tuning and the temperature effect. Based on the dynamical model, a self-centering closed loop is proposed for pulling the reference position of the force-to-rebalance (FTR) to the geometric center of DSPP. The self-centering accelerometer operates at the optimal reference position by eliminating the temperature drift of the readout circuit and nulling the net electrostatic tuning forces. The stiffness closed-loop is also incorporated to prevent the pull-in instability of the tuned low-stiffness accelerometer under a dramatic temperature variation. Real-time adjustments of the reference position and the DC tuning voltage are utilized to compensate for the residue temperature drift of the proposed accelerometer. As a result, a novel controlling approach composed of a self-centering closed loop, stiffness-closed loop, and temperature drift compensation is achieved for the accelerometer, realizing a temperature drift coefficient (TDC) of approximately 7 μg/°C and an Allan bias instability of less than 1 μg.

Macro-Meso Damage Analysis of Tunnel Lining Concrete under Thermal-Mechanical Coupling Based on CT Images

The mechanical properties and failure modes of concrete are controlled by its mesoscopic material composition and structure; therefore, it is necessary to study the deterioration characteristics of tunnel lining concrete under fire from a mesoscopic perspective. However, previous studies mostly analyzed the damage and failure process from a macro-homogeneous perspective, which has certain limitations. In this paper, a thermal-mechanical coupling test device was modified to simulate the state of concrete under tunnel fire conditions. Combined with CT technology, the macroscopic properties and mesoscopic characteristics of concrete were observed. Features were obtained, such as the change in compressive strength under fire, as well as mesoscopic deterioration characteristics. The damage variable D was defined to quantify mesoscopic damage, and the link between mesoscopic deterioration characteristics and macroscopic performance was established, which can be used to predict compressive strength loss through mesoscopic characteristics.

The negative-positive feedback transition thresholds of meteorological drought in response to agricultural drought and their dynamics

There are complex bidirectional feedback relationships among different types of droughts (e.g., meteorological and agricultural droughts). As agricultural drought intensifies, meteorological drought response to agricultural drought may be changed from negative to positive feedback. Nevertheless, the negative-positive feedback transition thresholds of meteorological drought in response to agricultural drought and their dynamics have remained unsolved. Herein, we proposed a new quantitative method to characterize the mutual feedback between meteorological drought and agricultural drought based on the vine copula function for the first time in this study. The negative-positive feedback transition threshold and the sensitivity of the feedback were quantified under certain drought conditions. In order to investigate the feedback relationship dynamics under a changing environment, the total study period was evenly divided into two stages: stage 1 (1982-1999) and stage 2 (2000-2018). Finally, the random forest method was used to explore the dominant factors on the transition threshold. Results indicate that: (1) the negative-positive feedback transition thresholds in August is generally lower than June and July in mainland China, the basin with large threshold is the Southwest River Basin; (2) the sensitivity of meteorological drought in response to agricultural drought was higher in positive feedback than in negative feedback; (3) the transition thresholds of stage 2 was mostly reduced, while the feedback sensitivity of positive feedback was mostly increased; and (4) compared with the single factor, the land-meteorological coupling strength (the correlation between precipitation and soil moisture) dominants the negative-positive feedback transition threshold. This study sheds new insights into droughts feedback.

Selective Adsorption of Gadolinium by Nitrogen-Doped Carboxymethylated Cellulose Nanocrystalline Carbon Aerogels Functionalized in the Ammonia-Urea System

In this paper, an ammonia-urea system was developed to induce the shedding of carboxymethylcellulose carbon aerogels to form defects, and the specific surface area of the aerogels was significantly increased after carbonization, and the three-dimensional disordered pore structure of cellulose was preserved. The material showed the selective adsorption of gadolinium ions using the carboxylate active sites provided by carboxymethylation and the microporous or mesoporous structures formed after carbon burning. The successful synthesis of the material was demonstrated by relevant characterization, and the results of static adsorption experiments showed that the material was more consistent with the quasi second-order kinetic model at pH = 5.0. The maximum adsorption capacity was 99.65 mg g-1. The material showed a high adsorption capacity for gadolinium ions in the presence of competing ions and maintained 84.07% of the adsorption performance after five adsorption cycles. The simple use of urea ensured that the cellulose maintained its pore structure, and the specific surface area was greatly increased after carbonization, which provided a feasible direction for the industrial adsorption and recycling of rare-earth elements for reuse.

Preparation of imprinted bacterial cellulose aerogel with intelligent modulation of thermal response stimulation for selective adsorption of Gd(III) from wastewater

Research on recycling of used rare earth elements has been of great interest. Adsorption is one of the advantageous methods to recover gadolinium with high value. In the process of adsorption and separation of gadolinium from materials, the selectivity of materials for gadolinium can be significantly improved by using ion imprinting technique. However, gadolinium elution process is a traditional pickling process, which may affect the construction of imprinting sites. In this study, bacterial cellulose with three-dimensional spatial structure was used as the base material of aerogel material, and functional materials containing a large number of carboxyl groups were introduced by chemical grafting method. In combination with ion imprinting technology and N-polyacrylamide as intelligent temperature control valve, intelligent imprinting aerogel (PNBC-IIPS) with specific selectivity to gadolinium was prepared. The properties of aerogel materials were analyzed by SEM, FT-IR, and BET characterization. The experimental analysis shows that the desorption of gadolinium can be achieved by controlling the temperature change. The adsorption experiments show that PNBC-IIPS can selectively adsorb gadolinium ions from aqueous solution. The maximum adsorption capacity reached 95.51 mg g-1. Compared with unimprinted aerogel, the maximum adsorption capacity of gadolinium ion is significantly increased, which proves that the introduced ion imprinting technique plays a key role in the adsorption process. Cyclic experiments show that the adsorption capacity of PNBC-IIPS can still maintain 88% of the original adsorption capacity after 5 times of adsorption and desorption. In conclusion, PNBC-IIPS is a green adsorbent for selective recovery of gadolinium ions.

Cascaded compression of size distribution of nanopores in monolayer graphene

Monolayer graphene with nanometre-scale pores, atomically thin thickness and remarkable mechanical properties provides wide-ranging opportunities for applications in ion and molecular separations1, energy storage2 and electronics3. Because the performance of these applications relies heavily on the size of the nanopores, it is desirable to design and engineer with precision a suitable nanopore size with narrow size distributions. However, conventional top-down processes often yield log-normal distributions with long tails, particularly at the sub-nanometre scale4. Moreover, the size distribution and density of the nanopores are often intrinsically intercorrelated, leading to a trade-off between the two that substantially limits their applications5-9. Here we report a cascaded compression approach to narrowing the size distribution of nanopores with left skewness and ultrasmall tail deviation, while keeping the density of nanopores increasing at each compression cycle. The formation of nanopores is split into many small steps, in each of which the size distribution of all the existing nanopores is compressed by a combination of shrinkage and expansion and, at the same time as expansion, a new batch of nanopores is created, leading to increased nanopore density by each cycle. As a result, high-density nanopores in monolayer graphene with a left-skewed, short-tail size distribution are obtained that show ultrafast and ångström-size-tunable selective transport of ions and molecules, breaking the limitation of the conventional log-normal size distribution9,10. This method allows for independent control of several metrics of the generated nanopores, including the density, mean diameter, standard deviation and skewness of the size distribution, which will lead to the next leap in nanotechnology.

The Effects of Negative Pressure Induced by Flow Separation Vortices on Vocal Fold Dynamics during Voice Production

This study used a two-dimensional flow-structure-interaction computer model to investigate the effects of flow-separation-vortex-induced negative pressure on vocal fold vibration and flow dynamics during vocal fold vibration. The study found that negative pressure induced by flow separation vortices enhances vocal fold vibration by increasing aeroelastic energy transfer during vibration. The result showed that the intraglottal pressure was predominantly negative after flow separation before gradually recovering to zero at the glottis exit. When the negative pressure was removed, the vibration amplitude and flow rate were reduced by up to 20%, and the closing speed, flow skewness quotient, and maximum flow declination rate were reduced by up to 40%. The study provides insights into the complex interactions between flow dynamics, vocal fold vibration, and energy transfer during voice production.

The Influence of Fiber Orientation of the Conus Elasticus in Vocal Fold Modeling

While the conus elasticus is generally considered a part of continuation of the vocal ligament, histological studies have revealed different fiber orientations that fibers are primarily aligned in the superior-inferior direction in the conus elasticus and in the anterior-posterior direction in the vocal ligament. In this work, two continuum vocal fold models are constructed with two different fiber orientations in the conus elasticus: the superior-inferior direction and the anterior-posterior direction. Flow-structure interaction simulations are conducted at different subglottal pressures to investigate the effects of fiber orientation in the conus elasticus on vocal fold vibrations, aerodynamic and acoustic measures of voice production. The results reveal that including the realistic fiber orientation (superior-inferior) in the conus elasticus yields smaller stiffness and larger deflection in the coronal plane at the junction of the conus elasticus and ligament and subsequently leads to a greater vibration amplitude and larger mucosal wave amplitude of the vocal fold. The smaller coronal-plane stiffness also causes a larger peak flow rate and higher skewing quotient. Furthermore, the voice generated by the vocal fold model with a realistic conus elasticus has a lower fundamental frequency, smaller first harmonic amplitude, and smaller spectral slope.

Combined Temperature Compensation Method for Closed-Loop Microelectromechanical System Capacitive Accelerometer

This article describes a closed-loop detection MEMS accelerometer for acceleration measurement. This paper analyzes the working principle of MEMS accelerometers in detail and explains the relationship between the accelerometer zero bias, scale factor and voltage reference. Therefore, a combined compensation method is designed via reference voltage source compensation and terminal temperature compensation of the accelerometer, which comprehensively improves the performance over a wide temperature range of the accelerometer. The experiment results show that the initial range is reduced from 3679 ppm to 221 ppm with reference voltage source compensation, zero-bias stability of the accelerometer over temperature is increased by 14.3% on average and the scale factor stability over temperature is increased by 88.2% on average. After combined compensation, one accelerometer zero-bias stability over temperature was reduced to 40 μg and the scale factor stability over temperature was reduced to 16 ppm, the average value of the zero-bias stability over temperature was reduced from 1764 μg to 36 μg, the average value of the scale factor stability over temperature was reduced from 2270 ppm to 25 ppm, the average stability of the zero bias was increased by 97.96% and the average stability of the scale factor was increased by 98.90%.

Deciphering the connection between upstream obstacles, wake structures, and root signals in seal whisker array sensing using interpretable neural networks

This study presents a novel method that combines a computational fluid-structure interaction model with an interpretable deep-learning model to explore the fundamental mechanisms of seal whisker sensing. By establishing connections between crucial signal patterns, flow characteristics, and attributes of upstream obstacles, the method has the potential to enhance our understanding of the intricate sensing mechanisms. The effectiveness of the method is demonstrated through its accurate prediction of the location and orientation of a circular plate placed in front of seal whisker arrays. The model also generates temporal and spatial importance values of the signals, enabling the identification of significant temporal-spatial signal patterns crucial for the network's predictions. These signal patterns are further correlated with flow structures, allowing for the identification of important flow features relevant for accurate prediction. The study provides insights into seal whiskers' perception of complex underwater environments, inspiring advancements in underwater sensing technologies.

A solvent-template ethyl cellulose-polydimethylsiloxane crosslinking sponge for rapid and efficient oil adsorption

Lipophilic adsorbents for oil-water separation are usually synthesized using the template method, in which hydrophobic materials are coated on a ready-made sponge. Herein, a novel solvent-template technique is used to directly synthesize a hydrophobic sponge, by crosslinking polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) with ethyl cellulose (EC) which plays a vital role in the formation of 3D porous structure. The as-prepared sponge has advantages of strong hydrophobility, high elasticity, as well as excellent adsorption performance. In addition, the sponge can be readily decorated by nano-coatings. After the sponge was simply dipped in nanosilica, the water contact angle increases from 139.2° to 144.5°, and the maximum adsorption capacity for chiroform rises from 25.6 g/g to 35.4 g/g. The adsorption equilibrium can be reached within 3 min, and, the sponge can be regenerated by squeezing, without any change in hydrophobility or evident decline in capacity. The simulation tests of emulsion separation and oil-spill cleanup demonstrate that the sponge has great potential in oil-water separation.

Using system biology and bioinformatics to identify the influences of COVID-19 co-infection with influenza virus on COPD

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has speedily increased mortality globally. Although they are risk factors for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), less is known about the common molecular mechanisms behind COVID-19, influenza virus A (IAV), and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This research used bioinformatics and systems biology to find possible medications for treating COVID-19, IAV, and COPD via identifying differentially expressed genes (DEGs) from gene expression datasets (GSE171110, GSE76925, GSE106986, and GSE185576). A total of 78 DEGs were subjected to functional enrichment, pathway analysis, protein-protein interaction (PPI) network construct, hub gene extraction, and other potentially relevant disorders. Then, DEGs were discovered in networks including transcription factor (TF)-gene connections, protein-drug interactions, and DEG-microRNA (miRNA) coregulatory networks by using NetworkAnalyst. The top 12 hub genes were MPO, MMP9, CD8A, HP, ELANE, CD5, CR2, PLA2G7, PIK3R1, SLAMF1, PEX3, and TNFRSF17. We found that 44 TFs-genes, as well as 118 miRNAs, are directly linked to hub genes. Additionally, we searched the Drug Signatures Database (DSigDB) and identified 10 drugs that could potentially treat COVID-19, IAV, and COPD. Therefore, we evaluated the top 12 hub genes that could be promising DEGs for targeted therapy for SARS-CoV-2 and identified several prospective medications that may benefit COPD patients with COVID-19 and IAV co-infection.

VOC species controlling O3 formation in ambient air and their sources in Kaifeng, China

The concentration of ozone has been in a rising crescendo in the last decade while the fine particles (PM_2.5) is gradually decreasing but still at a high level in central China. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are the vital precursors of ozone and PM_2.5. A total of 101 VOC species were measured in four seasons at five sites from 2019 to 2021 in Kaifeng. VOC sources and geographic origin of sources were identified by the positive matrix factorization (PMF) model and the hybrid single-particle Lagrangian integrated trajectory transport model. The source-specific OH loss rates (L_OH) and ozone formation potential (OFP) were calculated to estimate the effects of each VOC source. The average mixing ratios of total VOCs (TVOC) were 43.15 parts per billion (ppb), of which the alkanes, alkenes, aromatics, halocarbons, and oxygenated VOCs respectively accounted for 49%, 12%, 11%, 14%, and 14%. Although the mixing ratios of alkenes were comparatively low, they played a dominant role in the L_OH and OFP, especially ethene (0.55 s^-1, 7%; 27.11 μg/m³, 10%) and 1,3-butadiene (0.74 s^-1, 10%; 12.52 μg/m³, 5%). The vehicle-related source which emitted considerable alkenes ranked as the foremost contributing factor (21%). Biomass burning was probably influenced by other cities in the western and southern Henan and other provinces, Shandong and Hebei.

Predicting 3D soft tissue dynamics from 2D imaging using physics informed neural networks

Tissue dynamics play critical roles in many physiological functions and provide important metrics for clinical diagnosis. Capturing real-time high-resolution 3D images of tissue dynamics, however, remains a challenge. This study presents a hybrid physics-informed neural network algorithm that infers 3D flow-induced tissue dynamics and other physical quantities from sparse 2D images. The algorithm combines a recurrent neural network model of soft tissue with a differentiable fluid solver, leveraging prior knowledge in solid mechanics to project the governing equation on a discrete eigen space. The algorithm uses a Long-short-term memory-based recurrent encoder-decoder connected with a fully connected neural network to capture the temporal dependence of flow-structure-interaction. The effectiveness and merit of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated on synthetic data from a canine vocal fold model and experimental data from excised pigeon syringes. The results showed that the algorithm accurately reconstructs 3D vocal dynamics, aerodynamics, and acoustics from sparse 2D vibration profiles.

Assessment of dynamic drought-induced ecosystem risk: Integrating time-varying hazard frequency, exposure and vulnerability

Terrestrial ecosystems, occupying 28.26% of Earth's surface, are extensively at risk from droughts, which is likely to propagate into human communities owing to loss of vital services. Ecosystem risk also tends to fluctuate within anthropogenically-forced nonstationary environments, raising considerable concerns about effectiveness of mitigation strategies. This study aims to assess dynamic ecosystem risk induced by droughts and identify risk hotspots. Bivariate nonstationary drought frequency was initially derived as a hazard component of risk. By coupling vegetation coverage and biomass quantity, a two-dimensional exposure indicator was developed. Trivariate likelihood of vegetation decline was calculated under arbitrary droughts to intuitively determine ecosystem vulnerability. Ultimately, time-variant drought frequency, exposure and vulnerability were multiplied to derive dynamic ecosystem risk, followed by hotspot and attribution analyses. Risk assessment implemented in the drought-prevalent Pearl River basin (PRB) of China during 1982-2017 showed that meteorological droughts in eastern and western margins, although less frequent, were prolonged and aggravated in contrast to prevalence of less persistent and severe droughts in the middle. In 86.12% of the PRB, ecosystem exposure maintains high levels (0.62). Relatively high vulnerability (>0.5) occurs in water-demanding agroecosystems, exhibiting a northwest-southeast-directed extension. A 0.1-degree risk atlas unveils that high and medium risks occupy 18.96% and 37.99% of the PRB, while risks are magnified in the north. The most pressing hotspots with high risk continuing to escalate reside in the East River and Hongliu River basins. Our results provide knowledge of composition, spatio-temporal variability and driving mechanism of drought-induced ecosystem risk, which will assist in risk-based mitigation prioritization.

Low-thermal-budget synthesis of monolayer molybdenum disulfide for silicon back-end-of-line integration on a 200 mm platform

Two-dimensional (2D) materials are promising candidates for future electronics due to their excellent electrical and photonic properties. Although promising results on the wafer-scale synthesis (≤150 mm diameter) of monolayer molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂) have already been reported, the high-quality synthesis of 2D materials on wafers of 200 mm or larger, which are typically used in commercial silicon foundries, remains difficult. The back-end-of-line (BEOL) integration of directly grown 2D materials on silicon complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) circuits is also unavailable due to the high thermal budget required, which far exceeds the limits of silicon BEOL integration (<400 °C). This high temperature forces the use of challenging transfer processes, which tend to introduce defects and contamination to both the 2D materials and the BEOL circuits. Here we report a low-thermal-budget synthesis method (growth temperature < 300 °C, growth time ≤ 60 min) for monolayer MoS₂ films, which enables the 2D material to be synthesized at a temperature below the precursor decomposition temperature and grown directly on silicon CMOS circuits without requiring any transfer process. We designed a metal-organic chemical vapour deposition reactor to separate the low-temperature growth region from the high-temperature chalcogenide-precursor-decomposition region. We obtain monolayer MoS₂ with electrical uniformity on 200 mm wafers, as well as a high material quality with an electron mobility of ~35.9 cm² V^-1 s^-1. Finally, we demonstrate a silicon-CMOS-compatible BEOL fabrication process flow for MoS₂ transistors; the performance of these silicon devices shows negligible degradation (current variation < 0.5%, threshold voltage shift < 20 mV). We believe that this is an important step towards monolithic 3D integration for future electronics.

Research on a Method to Improve the Temperature Performance of an All-Silicon Accelerometer

This paper presents a novel method for the performance of an all-silicon accelerometer by adjusting the ratio of the Si-SiO₂ bonding area, and the Au-Si bonding area in the anchor zone, with the aim of eliminating stress in the anchor region. The study includes the development of an accelerometer model and simulation analysis which demonstrates the stress maps of the accelerometer under different anchor-area ratios, which have a strong impact on the performance of the accelerometer. In practical applications, the deformation of the comb structure fixed by the anchor zone is influenced by the stress in the anchor region, causing a distorted nonlinear response signal. The simulation results demonstrate that when the area ratio of the Si-SiO₂ anchor zone to the Au-Si anchor zone decreases to 0.5, the stress in the anchor zone decreases significantly. Experimental results reveal that the full-temperature stability of zero-bias is optimized from 133 μg to 46 μg when the anchor-zone ratio of the accelerometer decreases from 0.8 to 0.5. At the same time, the full-temperature stability of the scale factor is optimized from 87 ppm to 32 ppm. Furthermore, zero-bias full-temperature stability and scale factor full-temperature stability are improved by 34.6% and 36.8%, respectively.

A Self-Cleaning TiO2 Bacterial Cellulose Super-Hydrophilic Underwater Super-Oleophobic Composite Membrane for Efficient Oil-Water Separation

Due to the increasingly serious problem of offshore oil spills, research related to oil-water separation has attracted more and more attention. Here, we prepared a super-hydrophilic/underwater super-oleophobic membrane (hereinafter referred to as BTA) using poly-dopamine (PDA) to adhesive TiO₂ nanoparticles on the surface of bacterial cellulose, coated with sodium alienate by vacuum-assisted filtration technique. This demonstrates its excellent underwater super-oleophobic property. Its contact angle is about 153°. Remarkably, BTA has 99% separation efficiency. More importantly, BTA still showed excellent anti-pollution property under ultraviolet light after 20 cycles. BTA has the advantages of low cost, environmentally friendliness and good anti-fouling performance. We believe it can play an important role in dealing with problems related to oily wastewater.

Synthesis of High Specific Surface Lithium-Ion Sieve Templated by Bacterial Cellulose for Selective Adsorption of Li+

In recent years, with the development of batteries, ceramics, glass and other industries, the demand for lithium has increased rapidly. Due to the rich lithium resources in seawater and salt-lake brine, the question of how to selectively adsorb and separate lithium ions from such brine has attracted the attention and research of many scholars. The Li-ion sieve stands out from other methods thanks to its excellent special adsorption and separation performance. In this paper, mesoporous titanium dioxide and lithium hydroxide were prepared by hydrothermal reaction using bacterial cellulose as a biological template. After calcination at 600 °C, spinel lithium titanium oxide Li2TiO3 was formed. The precursor was eluted with HCl eluent to obtain H2TiO3. The lithium titanate were characterized by IR, SEM and X-ray diffraction. The adsorption properties of H2TiO3 were studied by adsorption pH, adsorption kinetics, adsorption isotherm and competitive adsorption. The results show that H2TiO3 has a single-layer chemical adsorption process, and has a good adsorption effect on lithium ions at pH 11.0, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 35.45 mg g−1. The lithium-ion sieve can selectively adsorb Li+, and its partition coefficient is 2242.548 mL g−1. It can be predicted that the lithium-ion sieve prepared by biological template will have broad application prospects.

Daily point-of-care ultrasound-assessment of central venous catheter-related thrombosis in critically ill patients: a prospective multicenter study

PURPOSE

Central venous catheter (CVC)-related thrombosis (CRT) is a known complication in critically ill patients. However, its clinical significance remains unclear. The objective of the study was to evaluate the occurrence and evolution of CRT from CVC insertion to removal.

METHODS

A prospective multicenter study was conducted in 28 intensive care units (ICUs). Duplex ultrasound was performed daily from CVC insertion until at least 3 days after CVC removal or before patient discharge from the ICU to detect CRT and to follow its progression. CRT diameter and length were measured and diameter > 7 mm was considered extensive.

RESULTS

The study included 1262 patients. The incidence of CRT was 16.9% (95% confidence interval 14.8-18.9%). CRT was most commonly found in the internal jugular vein. The median time from CVC insertion to CRT onset was 4 (2-7) days, and 12% of CRTs occurred on the first day and 82% within 7 days of CVC insertion. CRT diameters > 5 mm and > 7 mm were found in 48% and 30% of thromboses. Over a 7-day follow-up, CRT diameter remained stable when the CVC was in place, whereas it gradually decreased after CVC removal. The ICU length of stay was longer in patients with CRT than in those without CRT, and the mortality was not different.

CONCLUSION

CRT is a frequent complication. It can occur as soon as the CVC is placed and mostly during the first week following catheterization. Half of the thromboses are small but one-third are extensive. They are often non-progressive and may be resolved after CVC removal.

Influence of lung cancer model characteristics on tumor targeting behavior of nanodrugs

Evidence is mounting that there is a significant gap between the antitumor efficacy of nanodrugs in preclinical mouse tumor models and in clinical human tumors, and that differences in tumor models are likely to be responsible for this gap. Herein, we investigated the enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effect in mouse lung cancer models with different tumor growth rates, volumes and locations, and analyzed the nanodrug tumor targeting behaviors limited by tumor vascular pathophysiological characteristics in various tumor models. The results showed that the fast-growing tumors were characterized by lower vascular tight junctions, leading to higher vascular paracellular transport activity and nanodrug tumor accumulation. The paracellular transport activity increased with the growth of tumor, but the vascular density and transcellular transport activity decreased, and as a result, the average tumor accumulation of passive targeting nanodrugs decreased. Orthotopic tumors were rich in blood vessels, but had low vascular transcellular and paracellular transport activities, making it difficult for nanodrug accumulation in orthotopic tumors via passive targeting strategies. The antitumor efficacy of passive targeting nanodrugs in various lung cancer-bearing mice validated the aforementioned nanodrug accumulation behavior, and nanodrugs based on the angiogenesis-tumor sequential targeting strategy achieved obviously improved efficacy in orthotopic lung cancer-bearing mice. These results suggest that the EPR effect varies in different tumor models and should not be used as a universal targeting strategy for antitumor nanodrugs. Besides, attention should be paid to the animal tumor models in the evaluation of nanodrugs so as to avoid exaggerating the antitumor efficacy.

Elasticity of mesoporous nanocapsules regulates cellular uptake, blood circulation, and intratumoral distribution

The elasticity of nanoparticles plays a critical role in regulating nanoparticle-biosystem interactions. However, the elasticity of traditional organic-based carriers can only be regulated within a narrow range, and the effects of elasticity on in vivo biological processes have not been evaluated until now. Here, we construct hyaluronic acid modified mesoporous organosilica nanoparticles (MONs-HA) with a wide range of elasticity by an interior preferential etching approach and investigate the impact of their elasticity on in vitro cellular uptake, in vivo blood circulation, and tumor accumulation. The Young's moduli of the prepared MONs-HA are 1.64, 0.93, 0.78, 0.4 and 0.29 GPa (denoted as rigid MONs₀-HA, semi-elastic MONs₂₀-HA and MONs₅₀-HA, elastic MONs₁₀₀-HA and MONs₂₀₀-HA), respectively. They all possess a similar hydrodynamic size (245-257 nm), similar surface electronegativity (-27 to -35 mV), and excellent dispersibility. In vitro experiments demonstrate that the elastic MONs₁₀₀-HA and MONs₂₀₀-HA (0.4 and 0.29 GPa) exhibit significantly greater cellular uptake relative to semi-elastic MONs₂₀-HA and MONs₅₀-HA (0.93 and 0.78 GPa) or rigid MONs₀-HA (1.64 GPa). Simultaneously, these elastic MONs₁₀₀-HA and MONs₂₀₀-HA show an efficiently prolonged circulation time. In vivo results revealed that the elastic MONs₁₀₀-HA show enhanced tumor accumulation compared to semi-elastic and rigid MONs-HA after intravenous administration. These desirable features of elasticity can direct the design of nanoplatforms, leading to an enhanced tumor delivery efficiency.

Carbon sinks and carbon emissions balance of land use transition in Xinjiang, China: differences and compensation

With the continuous enhancement of human activities, the contradiction between regional development and ecological protection is prominent in the ecologically fragile arid areas. It is of great significance for regional sustainable development to understand the ecological supply and demand problems caused by transformation of land using and formulate ecological compensation scheme scientifically. This study takes Xinjiang in China as the research area. It explores the land use transition characteristics and the changes in carbon supply and demand of Xinjiang using methods such as GIS spatial analysis and modified comparative ecological radiation forcing. Finally, the ecological compensation scheme is studied based on the theory of ecological radiation. The research shows that (I) in the study chronology, most of the areas produced only one change in land use. Land use is gradually developing towards the direction of ecological protection. After 2000, grassland recovered well, and 14,298 km² of other ecological land was transformed into grassland. (II) The change in the carbon sink of the Xinjiang ecosystem first decreased and then increased, and the ecological deficit area started to appear after 2010. The growth of grassland and cropland areas is essential to enhance the carbon sink capacity of arid zones. (III) The amount of ecological compensation in Xinjiang is 31.47 * 10⁸ yuan, and the proportion of the amount received by ecological compensation areas is related to the distance between the supply and demand areas, the amount of carbon sequestration, and the area of the region. This study provides a reference for achieving the healthy development of sustainable land use ecosystems in arid zones.

A Deep Learning-Based Generalized Empirical Flow Model of Glottal Flow During Normal Phonation

This paper proposes a deep learning-based generalized empirical flow model (EFM) that can provide a fast and accurate prediction of the glottal flow during normal phonation. The approach is based on the assumption that the vibration of the vocal folds can be represented by a universal kinematics equation (UKE), which is used to generate a glottal shape library. For each shape in the library, the ground truth values of the flow rate and pressure distribution are obtained from the high-fidelity Navier-Stokes (N-S) solution. A fully connected deep neural network (DNN) is then trained to build the empirical mapping between the shapes and the flow rate and pressure distributions. The obtained DNN-based EFM is coupled with a finite element method (FEM)-based solid dynamics solver for fluid-structure-interaction (FSI) simulation of phonation. The EFM is evaluated by comparing the N-S solutions in both static glottal shapes and FSI simulations. The results demonstrate a good prediction performance in accuracy and efficiency.

Organic-free growth of gold nanosheets inside 3D bacterial cellulose as highly efficient and robust antibacterial biopolymers

Without any chemical agent, gold nanosheets (AuNSs) were controllable synthesized through a facile photo-induced reduction within bacterial cellulose (BC) biopolymers. Compared with traditional polymers, AuNSs modified BC biopolymers (AuNSs@BC) biopolymers exhibited similar levels of softness, ductility, and better tensile strength. The in situ constructing of AuNSs@BC biopolymers was demonstrated to provide great reusability and antibacterial activities and towards both of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli). The optimized AuNSs@BC biopolymers remain at least 95% antibacterial activities after three cycles. The facile and shape-controlled synthesis of AuNSs@BC biopolymers is believed to be useful for the design and application of biomass-based medical dressing.

Computational Modeling of Voice Production Using Excised Canine Larynx

A combined experimental-numerical work was conducted to comprehensively validate a subject-specific continuum model of voice production in larynx using excised canine laryngeal experiments. The computational model is a coupling of the Navier-Stokes equations for glottal flow dynamics and a finite element model of vocal fold dynamics. The numerical simulations employed a cover-body vocal fold structure with the geometry reconstructed from magnetic resonance imaging scans and the material properties determined through an optimization-based inverse process of experimental indentation measurement. The results showed that the simulations predicted key features of the dynamics observed in the experiments, including the skewing of the glottal flow waveform, mucosal wave propagation, continuous increase of the divergent angle and intraglottal swirl strength during glottal closing, and flow recirculation between glottal jet and vocal fold. The simulations also predicted the increase of the divergent angle, glottal jet speed, and intraglottal flow swirl strength with the subglottal pressure, same as in the experiments. Quantitatively, the simulations over-predicted the frequency and jet speed and under-predicted the flow rate and divergent angle for the larynx under study. The limitations of the model and their implications were discussed.

Aerodynamics and motor control of ultrasonic vocalizations for social communication in mice and rats

BACKGROUND

Rodent ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) are crucial to their social communication and a widely used translational tool for linking gene mutations to behavior. To maximize the causal interpretation of experimental treatments, we need to understand how neural control affects USV production. However, both the aerodynamics of USV production and its neural control remain poorly understood.

RESULTS

Here, we test three intralaryngeal whistle mechanisms-the wall and alar edge impingement, and shallow cavity tone-by combining in vitro larynx physiology and individual-based 3D airway reconstructions with fluid dynamics simulations. Our results show that in the mouse and rat larynx, USVs are produced by a glottal jet impinging on the thyroid inner wall. Furthermore, we implemented an empirically based motor control model that predicts motor gesture trajectories of USV call types.

CONCLUSIONS

Our results identify wall impingement as the aerodynamic mechanism of USV production in rats and mice. Furthermore, our empirically based motor control model shows that both neural and anatomical components contribute to USV production, which suggests that changes in strain specific USVs or USV changes in disease models can result from both altered motor programs and laryngeal geometry. Our work provides a quantitative neuromechanical framework to evaluate the contributions of brain and body in shaping USVs and a first step in linking descending motor control to USV production.

Flow-signal correlation in seal whisker array sensing

Phocid seals detect and track artificial or biogenic hydrodynamic trails based on mechanical signals of their whisker arrays. In this paper, we investigated the correlations between flow structures and whisker array signals using a simplified numerical model of fluid-structure interaction (FSI). Three-dimensional (3D) wakes of moving paddles in three different shapes (rectangular plate, undulated plate, and circular cylinder) were simulated using an in-house immersed-boundary-method-based computational fluid dynamics solver. One-way FSI was then simulated to obtain the dynamic behavior and root signal of each whisker in the two whisker arrays on a seal head in each wake. The position, geometry, and material properties of each whisker were modeled based on the measurements reported in literatures. The correlations between the wake structures and whisker array signals were analyzed. It was found that the patterns of the signals on the whisker arrays can reflect the strength, timing, and moving trajectories of the jets induced by the vortices in the wakes. Specifically, the rectangular plate generates the strongest starting vortex ring as well as the strongest jets, while the undulated plate generates the weakest ones. These flow features are fully reflected by the largest whisker signal magnitude in the rectangular plate sensing and the smallest one in the undulated plate sensing. Moreover, the timing of the signal initiation and the maximum signal agree well with the timing of the jet reaching the arrays and the maximum flow speed, respectively. The correlation coefficient between the moving trajectories of the jet and the movement of the high signal level region in the array was found to be higher than 0.9 in the rectangular plate case. The results provide a physical insight into the mechanisms of seal whisker flow sensing.

A computational framework for patient-specific surgical planning of type 1 thyroplasty

A computational framework is proposed for virtual optimization of implant configurations of type 1 thyroplasty based on patient-specific laryngeal structures reconstructed from MRI images. Through integration of a muscle mechanics-based laryngeal posturing model, a flow-structure-acoustics interaction voice production model, a real-coded genetic algorithm, and virtual implant insertion, the framework acquires the implant configuration that achieves the optimal acoustic objectives. The framework is showcased by successfully optimizing an implant that restores acoustic features of a diseased voice resulted from unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP) in producing a sustained vowel utterance. The sound intensity is improved from 62 dB (UVFP) to 81 dB (post-correction).

Effects of Structural Dimension Variation on the Vibration of MEMS Ring-Based Gyroscopes

This study investigated the effects of structural dimension variation arising from fabrication imperfections or active structural design on the vibration characteristics of a (100) single crystal silicon (SCS) ring-based Coriolis vibratory gyroscope. A mathematical model considering the geometrical irregularities and the anisotropy of Young’s modulus was developed via Lagrange’s equations for simulating the dynamical behavior of an imperfect ring-based gyroscope. The dynamical analyses are focused on the effects on the frequency split between two vibration modes of interest as well as the rotation of the principal axis of the 2θ mode pair, leading to modal coupling and the degradation of gyroscopic sensitivity. While both anisotropic Young’s modulus and nonideal deep trench verticality affect the frequency difference between two vibration modes, they have little contribution to deflecting the principal axis of the 2θ mode pair. However, the 4θ variations in the width of both the ring and the supporting beams cause modal coupling to occur and the degenerate 2θ mode pair to split in frequency. To aid the optimal design of MEMS ring-based gyroscopic sensors that has relatively high robustness to fabrication tolerance, a geometrical compensation based on the developed model is demonstrated to identify the geometries of the ring and the suspension.

Toxicity of amine-functionalized single-carbon nanotube (NH2 f-SWCNT) to Channel Catfish (Ietalurus Punetaus): Organ pathologies, oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis

The rapid development of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in the field of fish disease control and prevention raises concerns about the toxicity and safe use in fish. This study was performed to assess the effect on histological changes, oxidative stress related markers in response to various concentrations of amine-functionalized single carbon nanotubes (NH₂ f-SWCNT) (1, 10 and 100 mg kg^-1 fish) in Channel Catfish (Ietalurus Punetaus) for up to 10 days. Moreover, pro-inflammatory cytokine genes and apoptotic genes were analyzed to obtain a better understanding of molecular mechanism of NH₂ f-SWCNT induced toxicity. As a result, intraperitoneal (i.p.) administration of NH₂ f-SWCNT caused dose-dependent and time-dependent injuries in the sampled tissues. In comparison with the control groups, decrease of catalase (CAT) activity and superoxide dismutase (SOD), and increase of malondialdehyde (MDA) and lactin dehydrogenase (LDH) were observed in all treatments. Real-time PCR assay showed inflammatory response with dose-dependent increase of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) and transient increase of interleukin 1β (IL-1β) in the liver. NH₂ f-SWCNT administration induced increase of p38 as well as caspase-3 in all treatments compared to the control groups, indicating the involvement of p38-MAPK cascade and caspase-3 cascade in liver cell apoptosis. Overall, we conclude that NH₂ f-SWCNT exert effects by direct injury and indirectly oxidative stress, resulting in inflammation and apoptosis, which provides data for understanding of the biological mechanisms underlying the toxicity of CNTs in fish.

Crown Ether Grafted Graphene Oxide/Chitosan/Polyvinyl Alcohol Nanofiber Membrane for Highly Selective Adsorption and Separation of Lithium Ion

Nanofiber membranes were successfully prepared with crown ether (CE) functionalized graphene oxide (GO), chitosan (CS), and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) by low-temperature thermally induced liquid-liquid phase separation. The physical and chemical properties and adsorption performance of nanofiber membrane were studied through SEM, FT-IR, XRD, and static adsorption experiments. The results show that the specific surface area of the nanofiber membrane is as high as 101.5 m2∙g-1. The results of static adsorption experiments show that the maximum adsorption capacity of the nanofiber membrane can reach 168.50 mg∙g-1 when the pH is 7.0. In the selective adsorption experiment, the nanofiber membrane showed high selectivity for Li+ in salt lake brine. After five cycles, the material still retains 88.31% of the adsorption capacity. Therefore, it is proved that the material has good regeneration ability.

A Curriculum Integrating STEAM and Maker Education Promotes Pupils' Learning Motivation, Self-Efficacy, and Interdisciplinary Knowledge Acquisition

Contemporary society expects learners to synthesize large amounts of available information and take advantage of interdisciplinary knowledge to tackle complex, real-world issues. STEAM education aims to cultivate students' ability to solve such problems through interdisciplinary thinking but is often represented by courses that are merely disjointed arrays of school subjects. On the other hand, Maker education harnesses society's enthusiasm for technological innovation and creativity but overlooks the scientific principles that underpin these processes. This research presents a novel elementary school course informed by the interdisciplinary principles of STEAM, integrated with Maker's focus on technology and creativity. The course design also utilized engineering design as a meta-thematic framework. A total of 164 third-grade pupils participated in the research, with responses analyzed using descriptive statistical methods. The findings indicated that the integrated design of the course promoted pupils' learning motivation, self-efficacy, and acquisition of interdisciplinary knowledge. These effects were not gender-specific and demonstrate the potential applicability of a STEAM/Maker integrated approach to curriculum design in other settings.

Vocal fold vibration mode changes due to cricothyroid and thyroarytenoid muscle interaction in a three-dimensional model of the canine larynx

Using a continuum model based on magnetic resonance imaging of a canine larynx, parametric simulations of the vocal fold vibration during phonation were conducted with the cricothyroid muscle (CT) and the thyroarytenoid muscle (TA) independently activated from zero to full activation. The fundamental frequency (f₀) first increased and then experienced a downward jump as TA activity gradually increased under moderate to high CT activation. Proper orthogonal decomposition analysis revealed that the vocal fold vibrations were dominated by two modes representing a lateral motion and rotational motion, respectively, and the f₀ drop was associated with a switch on the order of the two modes. In another parametric set where only the vocalis was active, f₀ increased monotonically with both TA and CT activity and the mode switch did not occur. The results suggested that the active stress in the TA, which causes large stress differences between the body and cover, is essential for the occurrence of the rotational mode and mode switch. Relatively greater TA activity tends to promote the rotational mode, while relatively greater CT activity tends to promote the lateral mode. The results also suggested that the vibration modes affected f₀ by affecting the contribution of the TA stress to the effective stiffness. The switch in the dominant mode caused the non-monotonic change of f₀.

Effects of cricothyroid and thyroarytenoid interaction on voice control: Muscle activity, vocal fold biomechanics, flow, and acoustics

An MRI-based three-dimensional computer model of a canine larynx was used to investigate the effect of cricothyroid (CT) and thyroarytenoid (TA) muscle activity on vocal fold pre-phonatory posturing and glottic dynamics during voice production. Static vocal fold posturing in the full activation space of CT and TA muscles was first simulated using a laryngeal muscle mechanics model; dynamic flow-structure-acoustics interaction (FSAI) simulations were then performed to predict glottal flow and voice acoustics. The results revealed that TA activation decreased the length and increased the bulging, height, and contact area of the vocal fold. CT activation increased the length and contact area and decreased the height of the vocal fold. Both CT and TA activations increased the vocal fold stress, stiffness, and closure quotient; and only slightly affected the flow rate and voice intensity. Furthermore, CT and TA showed a complex control mechanism on the fundamental frequency pattern, which highly correlated with a combination of the stress, stiffness, and stretch of the vocal fold.
