Abstract
AIM To investigate the correlation of angles α and κ with the refractive and biological parameters in children. METHODS This case-series study included 438 eyes of 219 children (males/females = 105/114, age: 3-15 years). Ocular biometric parameters, including axial length, corneal radius of curvature (CR), white-to-white distance (WTW), angle κ and angle α, were measured using IOL Master 700; auto-refraction were assessed under cycloplegia. The eyes were assigned to different groups based on CR, WTW, and gender to compare the angles α and κ, and analyze the correlations between the differences of biological parameters on angles α and κ. RESULTS The means of axial length, CR, WTW, angle α, and angle κ were 23.24 ± 1.14 mm, 7.79 ± 0.27 mm, 11.68 ± 0.41 mm, 0.45 ± 0.25 mm, and 0.27 ± 0.22 mm, respectively. Angle α was correlated with CR and WTW (fixed effect coefficient [FEC] = 0.237, p = 0.015; FEC = -0.109, p = 0.003; respectively), and angle κ also correlated with CR and WTW (FEC = 0.271, p = 0.003; FEC = -0.147, p < 0.001, respectively). Comparing subgroups, the large CR and small WTW group had larger angles α (0.49 ± 0.27 vs. 0.41 ± 0.21, p < 0.001; 0.46 ± 0.27 vs. 0.44 ± 0.21, p < 0.05, respectively) and κ (0.29 ± 0.25 vs. 0.24 ± 0.15, p < 0.01; 0.29 ± 0.25 vs. 0.26 ± 0.19, p < 0.05, respectively). The differences in interocular angles α and κ showed correlation with interocular WTW (r = - 0.255, p < 0.001; r = - 0.385, p < 0.001). Eyes with smaller WTW tended to have larger angle κ (0.28 ± 0.27 vs. 0.25 ± 0.15, p < 0.05). CONCLUSION The size of angle α/κ may be correlated to CR and WTW, and a larger WTW eye may suggest a smaller angle κ compared with the fellow eye.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To investigate the prevalence and risk factors of refractive astigmatism (RA) and corneal astigmatism (CA) in preschool children and school-aged children in Shanghai, China. METHODS In this school-based, cross-sectional study, 4-15 years old children across three learning stages of kindergarten, primary school, and junior high school underwent noncycloplegic autorefraction and completed comprehensive questionnaires involving time spent on daily homework and outdoor activities. Data from the right eyes were analysed. RESULTS Overall, 7084 children (mean ± standard deviation (SD) of age: 8.08 ± 3.11 years) were included, and the prevalence rates of RA/CA ( ≤ - 1.0 D) in children were 15.8%/64% in kindergartens, 16.5%/65% in primary schools, and 32.8%/76.9% in junior high schools. The magnitude and prevalence of RA and CA all increased with age or with learning stage (all P < 0.001). The presence of RA was associated with more myopic spherical power (odds ratio (OR) 0.956, P = 0.021), junior high school (OR 1.973, P < 0.001), longer homework time on weekdays (OR 1.074, P = 0.029), and shorter outdoor activity time on weekends (odds ratio 0.929, P = 0.013). CONCLUSION In the wide age range of 4 to 15 years, the magnitude and prevalence of RA and CA increased with the learning stage, and these increases mainly began at the primary school stage. Factors, including longer homework time and shorter outdoor time were correlated with the presence of RA.

[PMID: 37950259 PMCID: PMC10636911 DOI: 10.1186/s12886-023-03199-3] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Grants] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 01/30/2023] [Accepted: 11/03/2023] [Indexed: 11/12/2023] Open
Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate the agreement between Pentacam and CASIA2 in the evaluation of corneal densities (CDs) and lens densities (LDs) in myopes. METHODS Fifty-three patients (106 eyes) underwent comprehensive ophthalmologic examinations. CDs and LDs were measured using Pentacam and CASIA2, respectively, based on the grayscale percentage of the obtained images. Agreement between Pentacam and CASIA2 was evaluated using the consistency intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and represented using Bland-Altman plots. RESULTS Compared to Pentacam, CASIA2 showed significantly higher CD and LD values in all measured zones. The ICC of the average CD and LD measured by the Pentacam and CASIA2 were 0.726 and 0.757, respectively. The ICC values of all corneal zones and lenses were above 0.7, except for the measurement of the cornea in the 0-2 mm zone (0.455), suggesting good consistency between the two devices, whose results were of different levels of linear correlation. Bland-Altman plots showed mean percentages of 3.93% for the points falling outside the limits of agreement among the densitometry results. The ICCs in different age groups were similar, but the agreement was poorer in the high myopia group (low and moderate myopia, CD: 0.739, LD: 0.753; high myopia, CD: 0.621, LD: 0.760). CONCLUSIONS CASIA2 demonstrated good consistency with Pentacam in the measurement of CD and LD, except for measurement of CD in the central cornea and in high myopia. Despite difference in the numerical results compared with Pentacam, which made the two devices uninterchangeable, CASIA2 provides a reliable alternative densitometric measurement method.

Abstract
Purpose: To compare bilateral differences in corneal biomechanics between keratoconus and normal eyes. Methods: In this case-control study, 346 eyes of 173 patients (aged 22.1 ± 6.1 years) with keratoconus (KC group) and 378 eyes of 189 patients (aged 26.7 ± 5.6 years) with ametropia (control group) were enrolled. Corneal tomography and biomechanical properties were examined using Pentacam HR and Corvis ST, respectively. The corneal biomechanical parameters were compared between eyes with forme fruste keratoconus (FFKC) and normal eyes. Bilateral differences in corneal biomechanical parameters were compared between the KC and control groups. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was used to assess discriminative efficacies. Results: The areas under the ROC curves (AUROCs) of stiffness parameter at the first applanation (SP-A1) and Tomographic and Biomechanical Index (TBI) for identifying FFKC were 0.641 and 0.694, respectively. The bilateral differential values of major corneal biomechanical parameters were significantly increased in the KC group (all p < 0.05), except for the Corvis Biomechanical Index (CBI). The AUROCs of the bilateral differential values of the deformation amplitude ratio at 2 mm (ΔDAR2), Integrated Radius (ΔIR), SP-A1 (ΔSP-A1), and the maximum inverse concave radius (ΔMax ICR) for discriminating keratoconus were 0.889, 0.884, 0.826, and 0.805, respectively. The Logistic Regression Model-1 (comprising of ΔDAR2, ΔIR, and age) and the Logistic Regression Model-2 (comprising of ΔIR, ΔARTh, ΔBAD-D, and age) had AUROCs of 0.922 and 0.998, respectively, for discriminating keratoconus. Conclusion: The bilateral asymmetry of corneal biomechanics was significantly increased in keratoconus compared with normal eyes, which may be helpful for the early detection of keratoconus.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate the characteristics of quick contrast sensitivity function (qCSF) and its related parameters in Chinese ametropia children. METHODS This case series study enrolled 106 eyes of 53 children (male/female=29/24, age: 9.04±2.06 years). Examinations included manifest refraction, axial length, corneal curvature, and monocular and binocular qCSF readings without refractive correction (area under log CSF [AULCSF], CSF acuity, and contrast sensitivity [CS] at 1.0 to 18.0 cpd). The subjects were divided into groups according to age and refractive parameters for analysis. RESULTS The mean spherical equivalent (SE), AULCSF, and CSF acuity of the test eyes were -0.94±1.53 D, 0.44±0.33, and 8.50±5.97 cpd, respectively. In the monocular qCSF comparison, the refraction sphere (RS) was the major factor correlated with qCSF readings (B=0.186, P =0.009 for AULCSF; B=0.543, P =0.019 for CSF acuity; generalized linear model). The three groups stratified by RS/SE (<-1.00D, -1.00D to 0D, and >0D) showed significant differences in CS at medium spatial frequencies (3.0 and 6.0 cpd; all P <0.05). In the low RS/SE group (within -1 to 0 D), the CS at 12.0 cpd was significantly lower than that in the hyperopia group (all P <0.05). Binocular qCSF readings were significantly correlated with those of the eyes with lower RS (all P <0.05). CONCLUSION RS and SE are the major contributing factors of qCSF without refractive correction in children. The CS at medium spatial frequencies decrease significantly as the RS/SE increase. In low myopia children, the CS at medium and high spatial frequencies are significantly decreased, providing practical value in visual function screening in children.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To investigate the agreement between a mobile applet-based visual acuity (VA) self-test program and the conventional VA tests. METHODS This consecutive case series study included 121 children and adults (242 eyes). Patients were classified into three groups according to age (children, adolescents, and adults). They underwent uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) testing, distance visual acuity with available spectacle correction (DVA with ASC) testing at 2.5-m distance, uncorrected near visual acuity (UNVA) testing, and near visual acuity with available spectacle correction (NVA with ASC) testing at a 0.4-m distance using a mobile applet-based VA self-test program and conventional VA tests in two eyes. RESULTS Correlations among UDVA, DVA with ASC, UNVA, and NVA with ASC between the two methods were significant in all subjects (all p < 0.001). The intraclass correlation coefficient were 0.960, 0.845, 0.960, and 0.669, respectively (all p < 0.001). The proportions of bias outside the 95% confidence interval limit of agreements were 6.20%, 4.82%, 7.08%, and 6.10%, respectively. There were significant differences in NVA with ASC between the two methods (p < 0.05) in the adolescent group, but no differences in measured parameters were found among children and adult groups. CONCLUSIONS There is good agreement between the mobile applet-based VA self-test program and the conventional VA tests. The VA self-test has good practical value especially in the current pandemic, allowing self-screening of visual acuity, myopia control, and remote management of visual impairment in ocular morbidity.

Abstract
Corneal transplantation is an effective clinical treatment for corneal diseases, which, however, is limited by donor corneas. It is of great clinical value to develop bioadhesive corneal patches with functions of "Transparency" and "Epithelium & Stroma generation", as well as "Suturelessness" and "Toughness". To simultaneously meet the "T.E.S.T." requirements, a light-curable hydrogel is designed based on methacryloylated gelatin (GelMA), Pluronic F127 diacrylate (F127DA) & Aldehyded Pluronic F127 (AF127) co-assembled bi-functional micelles and collagen type I (COL I), combined with clinically applied corneal cross-linking (CXL) technology for repairing damaged cornea. The patch formed after 5 min of ultraviolet irradiation possesses transparent, highly tough, and strongly bio-adhesive performance. Multiple cross-linking makes the patch withstand deformation near 600% and exhibit a burst pressure larger than 400 mmHg, significantly higher than normal intraocular pressure (10-21 mmHg). Besides, the slower degradation than GelMA-F127DA&AF127 hydrogel without COL I makes hydrogel patch stable on stromal beds in vivo, supporting the regrowth of corneal epithelium and stroma. The hydrogel patch can replace deep corneal stromal defects and well bio-integrate into the corneal tissue in rabbit models within 4 weeks, showing great potential in surgeries for keratoconus and other corneal diseases by combining with CXL.

Corneal biomechanical stiffness and histopathological changes after in vivo repeated accelerated corneal cross-linking in cat eyes. Exp Eye Res 2023; 227:109363. [PMID: 36584907 DOI: 10.1016/j.exer.2022.109363] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 05/14/2022] [Revised: 11/09/2022] [Accepted: 12/20/2022] [Indexed: 12/29/2022]
Abstract
Corneal cross-linking (CXL) has been proved efficiency for treating progressive keratoconus and other corneal ectasia diseases by stabilizing corneal geometry and biomechanics. However, the necessity of repeated CXL treatment in patients is unknown. This study aimed to investigate corneal biomechanical stiffness and change in corneal histopathological characteristics after repeated accelerated CXL (A-CXL) in cat eyes. A-CXL was performed with 0.1% riboflavin applied for 10 min, followed by ultraviolet A irradiation at 30 mW/cm2 for 3 min at 365 nm in 15 domestic cats. Corneas (n = 30) were divided into three groups: one-time accelerated corneal cross-linking (A-CXL*1 group), repeated accelerated corneal cross-linking (A-CXL*2 group), and an untreated control group. In A-CXL*2 group, A-CXL was repeated at 1-month intervals. In vivo ocular examinations were performed pre- and postoperatively. Biomechanical analysis was performed using a biotester biaxial testing system. We used the Mooney-Rivlin strain-energy function to describe corneal material properties. No infection in any case after A-CXL was observed. Biomechanical tests showed that the stress-strain curves of the two A-CXL groups were significantly different from those of the control group (P < 0.01), whereas stress-strain curve of the A-CXL*2 group was similar to that of the A-CXL*1 group (P > 0.05). Delayed epithelial healing and haze were observed 1 month after surgery. Stromal demarcation line depth measured with anterior spectral-domain optical coherence tomography was 187.6 ± 20.4 and 197.1 ± 11.5 μm for the A-CXL*1 and A-CXL*2 groups, respectively (P > 0.05). These results show that A-CXL can increase corneal biomechanics in cat eyes. The biomechanical enhancement of cat corneas treated with repeated A-CXL at 1-month intervals was similar to that of performing a one-time A-CXL. Repeated cross-linking procedures at short intervals may increase the risk of adverse reactions, and more caution should be taken in clinical applications.

Abstract
Purpose To investigate the 2-year visual quality of Evolution Implantable Collamer Lens (EVO-ICL) and small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) for the correction of low myopia. Methods In this prospective study, we included 25 eyes of 25 patients (7 men) who underwent EVO-ICL and 36 eyes of 36 patients (16 men) who underwent SMILE between January 2018 and December 2018. Subjective and objective visual outcomes were compared between ICL and SMILE. All patients were followed for 2 years. Results At the postoperative 2-year visit, the percentage of patients with uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) greater than or equal to preoperative corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) was comparable in the ICL group (80%, 20/25) and SMILE group (88.89%, 32/36). Spherical equivalent (SE) was within ± 0.50 D in 96% (24/25) of the ICL group and 94.44% (34/36) of the SMILE group. No eyes lost more than 2 lines of CDVA. Postoperative high-order aberrations (HOAs) were significantly increased in the ICL group (p < 0.01) and in the SMILE group (p < 0.01). The most common visual complaint was halo after ICL and starburst after SMILE. There was no correlation between HOAs and visual complaints (p > 0.05). Conclusion Evolution Implantable Collamer Lens provides comparable safety, efficacy, long-term visual stability, and high patient satisfaction when compared to SMILE in correcting low myopia. EVO-ICL could be a favorable alternative for low myopia. Key messages What was known? What this paper adds?

Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to establish a novel bilateral differential topographic algorithm and assess its efficacy for screening of keratoconus and corneal ectasia before corneal refractive surgery. Methods: One hundred and sixty-one consecutive patients (115 men and 46 women, aged 22.8 ± 6.8 years) with keratoconus, including clinical keratoconus, subclinical keratoconus, forme fruste keratoconus (FFK), and corneal ectasia (KC group) and one hundred and seventy-four consecutive patients (97 men and 77 women, aged 25.1 ± 6.7 years) with ametropia (control group) visiting the Eye and ENT hospital of Fudan University from June 2018 to April 2021 were included. Bilateral differential keratometry, elevation, and pachymetry topographies were composed based on raw topographic data obtained by a Scheimpflug imaging anterior segment analyzer. Key bilateral differential characteristic parameters were calculated. SPSS 20 (SPSS Inc., IBM) was used for statistical analyses and the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to determine the diagnostic efficacies. Results: Mann-Whitney tests detected that the front keratometry, front elevation, corneal pachymetry, and back elevation maximal, mean, and standard deviation values within a 1.5-mm radius of the bilateral differential topography were all significantly higher in the KC group than in the control group (all p-values <0.001). The front keratometry mean (ΔFKmean) and standard deviation (ΔFKsd) and the front elevation standard deviation (ΔFEsd) and maximal (ΔFEmax) values within a 1.5-mm radius of the bilateral differential topography yielded the four highest accuracies (area under the ROC curve = 0.985, 0.985, 0.984, and 0.983, respectively) for discriminating KC cases (including FFK cases) from normal cases. Cut-off values of 0.75 diopters (D) for the ΔFKmean, 0.67 D for the ΔFKsd, 2.9 μm for the ΔFEsd, and 14.6 μm for the ΔFEmax had the highest sensitivities (95.7, 95.0, 96.9, and 95.0%, respectively) and specificities (96.0, 97.7, 94.8, and 95.4%, respectively). Conclusion: Bilateral differential topographic parameters may be efficient for the early detection of keratoconus and corneal ectasia secondary to corneal refractive surgery. This bilateral differential topographic algorithm may complement conventional diagnostic models by improving the sensitivity and specificity of screening for early keratoconus and ectasia before corneal refractive surgeries.

Abstract
We examine the combined effects of a Kekulé coupling texture (KC) and a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) in a two-dimensional ferromagnetic honeycomb lattice. By analyzing the gap closing conditions and the inversions of the bulk bands, we identify the parameter range in which the system behaves as a trivial or a nontrivial topological magnon insulator. We find four topological phases in terms of the KC parameter and the DMI strength. We present the bulk-edge correspondence for the magnons in a honeycomb lattice with an armchair or a zigzag boundary. Furthermore, we find Tamm-like edge states due to the intrinsic on-site interactions along the boundary sites. Our results may have significant implications to magnon transport properties in the 2D magnets at low temperatures.

Role of Autophagy in Ovarian Cryopreservation by Vitrification. CRYO LETTERS 2018; 39:201-210. [PMID: 30059567] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [MESH Headings] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 06/08/2023]
Abstract
BACKGROUND Ovarian cryopreservation by vitrification and transplantation are useful methods to recover female fertility after radiotherapy and chemotherapy. As type II programmed cell death, autophagy plays important roles in ovarian follicle development, ovarian follicle atresia and anti-stress injury. OBJECTIVE The potential role of autophagy in ovarian vitrification was investigated. MATERIALS AND METHODS Mouse ovaries were cryopreserved by vitrification, and autophagy was treated, after which the ovarian histology was checked, and ovarian follicles were counted. The apoptotic rate was detected by TUNEL, and apoptotic molecular marker cleaved caspase-3 was checked by immunofluorescence and western blot analysis. RESULTS Our results suggested that autophagy was increased in the process of vitrification compared with the fresh ovaries (p<0.05). The number of primordial follicles was decreased through inhibiting or over-activating the autophagy by autophagy inhibitor or activator (p<0.05). However, the number of primary follicles, antral follicles and atretic follicles was not significantly different compared with vitrified/warmed groups. The apoptotic rate was significantly increased in the vitrified/warmed, autophagy-inhibiting and over-activating groups compared with the fresh group (p<0.05), and this result was further confirmed by western blot analysis. CONCLUSIONS Taken together, autophagy was activated in the ovarian cryopreservation by vitrification and plays a role in a natural adaptive response to cold stress in ovarian cryopreservation by vitrification.

Abstract
We investigate the properties of magnon edge states in a ferromagnetic honeycomb spin lattice with a Dzialozinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). We derive analytical expressions for the energy spectra and wavefunctions of the edge states localized on the boundaries. By introducing an external on-site potential at the outermost sites, we show that the bosonic band structure is similar to that of the fermionic graphene. We investigate the region in the momentum space where the bosonic edge states are well defined and we analyze the width of the edge state and their dependence with the DMI strength. Our findings extend the predictions using topological arguments and they allow size-dependent confirmation from possible experiments.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze and summarize the clinical characteristics, laboratory tests and treatment of X-linked lymphoproliferative syndrome type 1 (XLP-1). METHOD A retrospective study was done in 2012 on an XLP-1 patient to collect the data on clinical manifestation, laboratory examination, gene and protein expression, complications and prognosis. Literatures were reviewed in Pubmed with the key word"X-linked lymphoproliferative syndrome". RESULT The patient with persistent high fever, jaundice, abdominal distension, hepatosplenomegaly and lymphadenectasis, rash and suspicious positive family history; the patient eventually died of hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), with intestinal perforation, intestinal infection and bleeding after being infected with EB virus. This patient with SH2D1A gene exon 1 large fragment of the coding region of the nucleotide deletion and insertion mutations causing missense mutations (p.Leu25Lys) and nonsense mutations (stop codon TAG was inserted after missense mutation so that the protein encoded by the early termination of the 25 amino acids), which led to SAP protein missing. The expression of SAP in his mother was also partly missing. Retrieval of reports on XLP-1 was conducted through literature search (included totally 157 cases) at home and abroad, positive family history accounted for 60.6%(40/66); lymphoma incidence accounted for 49.7%(72/145); low gamma globulin occurred in 24.8%(39/157) of cases; secondary HLH ratio accounted for 43.3%(68/157); XLP-1 in patients with hemorrhagic enteritis and gastritis was low, accounted for only 2.6%(3/116). CONCLUSION XLP-1 patients occasionally develop necrotic enteritis complicated with ileal perforation.XLP-1 with large fragment deletion of SH2D1A gene might be associated with serious gastrointestinal manifestations.

Abstract
The coupled-cluster method is applied to the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic XXZ model on a square lattice by employing an approximation which contains two-body long-range correlations and high-order four-body local correlations. Improvement is found for the ground-state energy, the sublattice magnetization and the critical anisotropy when comparing with the approximation including the two-body correlations alone. We also obtain the full excitation spectrum which is in good agreement with the quantum Monte Carlo results and the high-order spin-wave theory.

Abstract
By extending our recently proposed magnon-density waves to low dimensions, we investigate, using a microscopic many-body approach, the longitudinal excitations of the quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1d) and quasi-2d Heisenberg antiferromagnetic systems on a bipartite lattice with a general spin quantum number. We obtain the full energy spectrum of the longitudinal mode as a function of the coupling constants in the original lattice Hamiltonian and find that it always has a nonzero energy gap if the ground state has a long-range order and becomes gapless for the pure isotropic 1d model. The numerical value of the minimum gap in our approximation agrees with that of a longitudinal mode observed in the quasi-1d antiferromagnetic compound KCuF3 at low temperature. It will be interesting to compare values of the energy spectrum at other momenta if their experimental results are available.

Abstract
A novel method for fabricating a nano array electrode (NAE) by using micropores of aluminium anodic film as templates was investigated. To evaluate the NAE, cyclic scanning of NAE in Fe(CN)6(3-) solution was performed and a sigmoidal shaped voltammogram was obtained. The NAE was designed to measure nitric oxide (NO) in vitro and in vivo. Studies showed that it was a sensitive and selective NO electrochemical sensor. NO release from myocardial cells was directly measured with this NAE and the results were satisfactory.

Abstract
A Pt microelectrode modified with nickel(II) polytetramethyldibenzo[b,i]tetraaza[14]annulene was prepared by electropolymerization of nickel(II) tetramethyldibenzo[b,i]tetraaza[14]annulene monomers and applied to determine sulfur dioxide in vitriol plant wastewater. For determination of SO2 with this electrochemically modified Pt microelectrode, the linear range was from 9.6 x 10(-6) to 2.4 x 10(-4) mol L-1, the sensitivity was 1.8 x 10(-4) A L mol-1, the detection limit was calculated to be 4.8 x 10(-6) mol L-1 (S/N = 3), the response time was less than 20 s and the relative standard deviation was found to be 2.1% on analyzing 4.8 x 10(-5) mol L-1 SO2 solution repeatedly (n = 7). These results demonstrated good accuracy compared with those obtained by the conventional iodimetric method.

Abstract
The research studied the concentration variation of peroxynitrite anion (O=N-O-O-) released from cultured neonatal myocardial cells induced by ischemia/reperfusion and studied the protective effect of melatonin on the injury. For this purpose, amperometry peroxynitrite ultramicrosensors (UMS) were fabricated and constructed by electropolymerizing inorganic macromolecular film of tetraaminophthalocyanine manganese(II) and coating chemically with poly(4-vinylpyridine). Under optimum conditions, the UMS showed high selectivity and sensitivity to peroxynitrite determination with a calculated detection limit of 1.8 x 10(-8) mol/L (S/N of 3). The detection of peroxynitrite was based on electrocatalytic reduction of peroxynitrite. The mechanism of catalysis was also discussed. The UMS should be promising for in vivo measurement of peroxynitrite without interference or fouling. Peroxynitrite released from myocardial cells both in the ischemic period and in the reperfusion period was measured directly. This approach may lead to important information for myocardial cells on the mechanism of injury and prospective treatments of medicine such as melatonin.

Abstract
Nitric oxide (NO) plays an important role in various physiological processes, acting either as an intra- and intercellular messenger or as a toxic agent. The detection and quantification of NO have been accomplished by a variety of methodologies. In the present study, real-time production of NO in the rat heart was continuously measured by using a novel copper-platinum microparticle-modified NO electrochemical microsensor. The linearity range of the microsensor is between 8.0 x 10(-8) and 4.8 x 10(-6) mol L-1 and the detection limit is 3.0 x 10(-8) mol L-1. NO release from the rat heart stimulated by the agonists L-arginine and acetylcholine was observed, and the responses were decreased by the NO synthase inhibitor L-N omega-nitroarginine. In addition, the effect of sodium nitroprusside (SNP), a NO donor, was also studied. SNP increases the concentration of NO in the rat heart. The experiments showed that electrochemical detection is suitable for detecting and quantifying NO in biological systems.

Abstract
Infrared absorption spectra of Bi-system high zero resistance temperature (Tc) superconductors were measured. The relation between Cu-O bond stretching vibration in CuO2 plane and superconducting properties of Bi-system high Tc superconductors were analysed and discussed. The result of analysis indicated that the change of absorption peak strength of Cu-O bond stretching vibration was similar to the change of Tc. The reason was related to the coupling between the phonon and free carrier. And according to the theory of molecule vibration, the frequencies of Cu-O bond stretching vibration in CuO2 plane were calculated on the base of simplified model.

Abstract
Langendorff perfusion isolated rat heart was subjected to total global ischemia (coronary flow rate is equal to zero) for 10 minutes and reperfusion for 15 minutes. The heart rate (HR), left ventricular developed pressure (LVDP), coronary flow rate (CFR), electrocardiogram (ECG) and the effects of calcium antagonist-flunarizine (FNZ) and/or oxygen free radical scavenger--vitamine C on the above parameters were observed. The results showed that FNZ dilated coronary vessel (P < 0.01) and had a slight negative chronotropic effect, but it had no effect on LVP. Vitamine C did not affect HR, LVP and CFR. The recovery of the product of HR and LVDP-Rate Pressure Product (RPP) in the FNZ + Vit. C group, Vit. C group and FNZ group was significantly higher than that in the control group (P < 0.05) at ten minutes reperfusion. All the results suggest that FNZ and Vit. C may improve the recovery of heart function after reperfusion.

Abstract
Isolated rat heart was subjected to Langendorff perfusion for 10 minutes of total global ischemia, and reperfusion for 15 minutes. The content of myocardial intracellular calcium, content of oxygen free radical induced lipid peroxide mitabolite-malondialdehyde (MDA), content of Lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) in coronary effluent, and the change of myocardial morphology were studied. The effects of flunarizine(FNZ) and/or vitamin C(Vit C) on the above parameters were observed. The results showed that, at 15 minutes of reperfusion, the contents of myocardial intracellular calcium, of MDA in myocaredium and of LDH in coronary effluent in the FNZ + Vit C group, Vit C group and FNZ group were all lower than those in the control group, and the change of morphology in the three groups was also slighter than that in the control group. When FNZ and Vit C were administered together, the effect was more marked and equivalent to the sum total of the effects of the two drugs. These suggest that both FNZ and Vit C reduce reperfusion injury through suppression of myocardium calcium overload and oxygen free radical damage.

Abstract
Resistance usually manifests following long-term dideoxynucleoside therapy of HIV-1 infection. This period appears to coincide with reduced dosage regimens. Resistance that is associated with long-term monotherapy may, in part, be due to decreased intracellular drug concentrations. It has been reported that intracellular uptake of the dideoxynucleosides is enhanced by dipyridamole. Hence, dipyridamole may potentially be used to optimize the effects of zalcitabine in HIV-1 antiretroviral "cocktail". The purpose of this study was to characterize the pharmacokinetics of zalcitabine when administered alone and concomitantly with dipyridamole. Also, we determined, indirectly, whether dipyridamole modulated the intracellular uptake of zalcitabine. Rats were intravenously administered either zalcitabine 100 mg/kg alone or with dipyridamole 15 mg/kg. Except renal clearance (CIR), there were no statistically significant differences in the pharmacokinetic parameters including the steady-state volume of distribution and distribution coefficient. Zalcitabine plasma concentrations declined rapidly in a bi-exponential fashion, with a terminal half-life of 1.03 +/- 0.18 hr. alone versus 1.08 +/- 0.22 hr. with dipyridamole. The area under the concentration-time curve was not significantly different with or without dipyridamole. ClR, was 1.42 +/- 0.37 l/hr./kg for zalcitabine alone versus 1.09 +/- 0.28 l/hr./kg with dipyridamole. Our single dose study show that zalcitabine disposition kinetics were not significantly modulated by dipyridamole.

Abstract
A low-resolution three-dimensional model of membrane-bound H,K-ATPase from pig gastric mucosa has been reconstructed by electron microscopy and image processing of two-dimensional crystals in negative stain. The crystal formation is induced by magnesium and vanadate, which stabilize the E2 conformation of the enzyme. The unit cell, with a size of a = b = 123 A, gamma = 90 degrees, has tetragonal p4 symmetry. There are four separate alpha beta protomers within each unit cell. The high-contrast region is limited to the cytoplasmic part of the protein. The total volume of the observed asymmetric protein domain corresponds to a molecular mass of 80-90 kDa. It consists mainly of a large pear-shaped domain measuring 60 x 45 A2, with a height of 50 A as measured perpendicular to the membrane plane. A small stalk segment, 20 A in length, forms a connection to the transmembrane region.

Abstract
Two-dimensional crystallization of membrane-bound H,K-ATPase (EC 3.6.1.36) in vesicle preparations from parietal cells of hog gastric mucosa was induced by an imidazole buffer containing Mg2+ and VO3- ions. A continuous reorganization of the protein molecules started within a few hours by the formation of linear arrays. At later stages confluent two-dimensional crystals were formed. Electron microscopy and image processing showed that these were of a single tetragonal type. The asymmetric unit consisted of one pear-shaped protein domain corresponding to a H,K-ATPase protomer. Through stain-deficient contact regions four adjacent protein units were connected forming a tetrameric structure.
