Exploring Appropriate Reference Intervals and Clinical Decision Limits for Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase Activity in Individuals From Guangzhou, China

Background

Quantitative detection of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) is commonly done to screen for G6PD deficiency. However, current reference intervals (RIs) of G6PD are unsuitable for evaluating G6PD-activity levels with local populations or associating G6PD variants with hemolysis risk to aid clinical decision-making. We explored appropriate RIs and clinical decision limits (CDLs) for G6PD activity in individuals from Guangzhou, China.

Methods

We enrolled 5,852 unrelated individuals between 2020 and 2022 and screened their samples in quantitative assays for G6PD activity. We conducted further investigations, including G6PD genotyping, thalassemia genotyping, follow-up analysis, and statistical analysis, for different groups.

Results

In Guangzhou, the RIs for the G6PD activities were 11.20-20.04 U/g Hb in male and 12.29-23.16 U/g Hb in female. The adjusted male median and normal male median (NMM) values were 15.47 U/g Hb and 15.51 U/g Hb, respectively. A threshold of 45% of the NMM could be used as a CDL to estimate the probability of G6PD variants. Our results revealed high hemolysis-risk CDLs (male: <10% of the NMM, female: <30% of the NMM), medium hemolysis-risk CDLs (male: 10%-45% of the NMM, female: 30%-79% of the NMM), and low hemolysis-risk CDLs (male: ≥ 45% of the NMM, female: ≥ 79% of the NMM).

Conclusions

Collectively, our findings contribute to a more accurate evaluation of G6PD-activity levels within the local population and provide valuable insights for clinical decision-making. Specifically, identifying threshold values for G6PD variants and hemolysis risk enables improved prediction and management of G6PD deficiency, ultimately enhancing patient care and treatment outcomes.

Chinese organic rice transition spatial econometrics empirical analysis

Based on the integrated model of Super-SBM model, spatial Durbin model (SDM) and Grey neural network model, this paper analyzes the panel data of various provinces in China from multiple angles and dimensions. It was found that there were significant differences in eco-efficiency between organic rice production and conventional rice production. The response of organic rice to climate change, the spatial distribution of ecological and economic benefits and the impact on carbon emission were analyzed. The results showed that organic rice planting not only had higher economic benefits, but also showed a rising trend of ecological benefits and a positive feedback effect. This finding highlights the importance of organic rice farming in reducing carbon emissions. Organic rice farming effectively reduces greenhouse gas emissions, especially carbon dioxide and methane, by improving soil management and reducing the use of fertilizers and pesticides. This has important implications for mitigating climate change and promoting soil health and biodiversity. With the acceleration of urbanization, the increase of organic rice planting area shows the trend of organic rice gradually replacing traditional rice cultivation, further highlighting the potential of organic agriculture in emission reduction, environmental protection and sustainable agricultural production. To this end, it is recommended that the Government implement a diversified support strategy to encourage technological innovation, provide guidance and training, and raise public awareness and demand for organic products. At the same time, private sector participation is stimulated to support the development of organic rice cultivation through a public-private partnership model. Through these measures, further promote organic rice cultivation, achieve the dual goals of economic benefits and environmental benefits, and effectively promote the realization of double carbon emission reduction targets.

Amphipathic Phenylalanine-Induced Nucleophilic-Hydrophobic Interface Toward Highly Reversible Zn Anode

Aqueous Zn2+-ion batteries (AZIBs), recognized for their high security, reliability, and cost efficiency, have garnered considerable attention. However, the prevalent issues of dendrite growth and parasitic reactions at the Zn electrode interface significantly impede their practical application. In this study, we introduced a ubiquitous biomolecule of phenylalanine (Phe) into the electrolyte as a multifunctional additive to improve the reversibility of the Zn anode. Leveraging its exceptional nucleophilic characteristics, Phe molecules tend to coordinate with Zn2+ ions for optimizing the solvation environment. Simultaneously, the distinctive lipophilicity of aromatic amino acids empowers Phe with a higher adsorption energy, enabling the construction of a multifunctional protective interphase. The hydrophobic benzene ring ligands act as cleaners for repelling H2O molecules, while the hydrophilic hydroxyl and carboxyl groups attract Zn2+ ions for homogenizing Zn2+ flux. Moreover, the preferential reduction of Phe molecules prior to H2O facilitates the in situ formation of an organic-inorganic hybrid solid electrolyte interphase, enhancing the interfacial stability of the Zn anode. Consequently, Zn||Zn cells display improved reversibility, achieving an extended cycle life of 5250 h. Additionally, Zn||LMO full cells exhibit enhanced cyclability of retaining 77.3% capacity after 300 cycles, demonstrating substantial potential in advancing the commercialization of AZIBs.

Toward Simultaneous Dense Zinc Deposition and Broken Side-Reaction Loops in the Zn//V2 O5 System

The Zn//V2 O5 system not only faces the incontrollable growth of zinc (Zn) dendrites, but also withstands the cross-talk effect of by-products produced from the cathode side to the Zn anode, inducing interelectrode talk and aggravating battery failure. To tackle these issues, we construct a rapid Zn2+ -conducting hydrogel electrolyte (R-ZSO) to achieve Zn deposition modulation and side reaction inhibition in Zn//V2 O5 full cells. The polymer matrix and BN exhibit a robust anchoring effect on SO4 2- , accelerating Zn2+ migration and enabling dense Zn deposition behavior. Therefore, the Zn//Zn symmetric cells based on the R-ZSO electrolyte can operate stably for more than 1500 h, which is six times higher than that of cells employing the blank electrolyte. More importantly, the R-ZSO hydrogel electrolyte effectively decouples the cross-talk effects, thus breaking the infinite loop of side reactions. As a result, the Zn//V2 O5 cells using this modified hydrogel electrolyte demonstrate stable operation over 1,000 cycles, with a capacity loss rate of only 0.028 % per cycle. Our study provides a promising gel chemistry, which offers a valuable guide for the construction of high-performance and multifunctional aqueous Zn-ion batteries.

Activation of the CD200/CD200R1 axis improves cognitive impairment by enhancing hippocampal neurogenesis via suppression of M1 microglial polarization and neuroinflammation in hypoxic-ischemic neonatal rats

Following hypoxic-ischemic brain damage (HIBD), there is a decline in cognitive function; however, there are no effective treatment strategies for this condition in neonates. This study aimed to evaluate the role of the cluster of differentiation 200 (CD200)/CD200R1 axis in cognitive function following HIBD using an established model of HIBD in postnatal day 7 rats. Western blotting analysis was conducted to evaluate the protein expression levels of CD200, CD200R1, proteins associated with the PI3K/Akt-NF-κB pathway, and inflammatory factors such as TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 in the hippocampus. Additionally, double-immunofluorescence labeling was utilized to evaluate M1 microglial polarization and neurogenesis in the hippocampus. To assess the learning and memory function of the experimental rats, the Morris water maze (MWM) test was conducted. HIBDleads to a decrease in the expression of CD200 and CD200R1 proteins in the neonatal rat hippocampus, while simultaneously increasing the expression of TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-1β proteins, ultimately resulting in cognitive impairment. The administration of CD200Fc, a fusion protein of CD200, was found to enhance the expression of p-PI3K and p-Akt, but reduce the expression of p-NF-κB. Additionally, CD200Fc inhibited M1 polarization of microglia, reduced neuroinflammation, improved hippocampal neurogenesis, and mitigated cognitive impairment caused by HIBD in neonatal rats. In contrast, blocking the interaction between CD200 and CD200R1 with the anti-CD200R1 antibody (CD200R1 Ab) exerted the opposite effect. Furthermore, the PI3K specific activator, 740Y-P, significantly increased the expression of p-PI3K and p-Akt, but reduced p-NF-κB expression. It also inhibited M1 polarization of microglia, reduced neuroinflammation, and improved hippocampal neurogenesis and cognitive function in neonatal rats with HIBD. Our findings illustrate that activation of the CD200/CD200R1 axis inhibits the NF-κB-mediated M1 polarization of microglia to improve HIBD-induced cognitive impairment and hippocampal neurogenesis disorder via the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway.

[Safety and efficacy of donor-derived chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy in patients with relapsed B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation]

Objective: To investigated the safety and efficacy of donor-derived CD19+ or sequential CD19+ CD22+ chimeric antigen receptor T-cell (CAR-T) therapy in patients with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT). Methods: The data of 22 patients with B-ALL who relapsed after allo-HSCT and who underwent donor-derived CAR-T therapy at the Zhujiang Hospital of Southern Medical University and the 920th Hospital of Joint Logistics Support Force of the People's Liberation Army of China from September 2015 to December 2022 were retrospectively analyzed. The primary endpoint was overall survival (OS), and the secondary endpoints were event-free survival (EFS), complete remission (CR) rate, and Grade 3-4 adverse events. Results: A total of 81.82% (n=18) of the 22 patients achieved minimal residual disease-negative CR after CAR-T infusion. The median follow-up time was 1037 (95% CI 546-1509) days, and the median OS and EFS were 287 (95% CI 132-441) days and 212 (95% CI 120-303) days, respectively. The 6-month OS and EFS rates were 67.90% (95% CI 48.30%-84.50%) and 58.70% (95% CI 37.92%-79.48%), respectively, and the 1-year OS and EFS rates were 41.10% (95% CI 19.15%-63.05%) and 34.30% (95% CI 13.92%-54.68%), respectively. Grade 1-2 cytokine release syndrome occurred in 36.36% (n=8) of the patients, and grade 3-4 occurred in 13.64% of the patients (n=3). Grade 2 and 4 graft-versus-host disease occurred in two patients. Conclusion: Donor-derived CAR-T therapy is safe and effective in patients with relapsed B-ALL after allo-HSCT.

Organic Intercalation Induced Kinetic Enhancement of Vanadium Oxide Cathodes for Ultrahigh-Loading Aqueous Zinc-Ion Batteries

Vanadium-based oxides have attracted much attention because of their rich valences and adjustable structures. The high theoretical specific capacity contributed by the two-electron-transfer process (V5+ /V3+ ) makes it an ideal cathode material for aqueous zinc-ion batteries. However, slow diffusion kinetics and poor structural stability limit the application of vanadium-based oxides. Herein, a strategy for intercalating organic matter between vanadium-based oxide layers is proposed to attain high rate performance and long cycling life. The V3 O7 ·H2 O is synthesized in situ on the carbon cloth to form an open porous structure, which provides sufficient contact areas with electrolyte and facilitates zinc ion transport. On the molecular level, the added organic matter p-aminophenol (pAP) not only plays a supporting role in the V3 O7 ·H2 O layer, but also shows a regulatory effect on the V5+ /V4+ redox process due to the reducing functional group on pAP. The novel composite electrode with porous structure exhibits outstanding reversible specific capacity (386.7 mAh g-1 , 0.1 A g-1 ) at a high load of 6.5 mg cm-2 , and superior capacity retention of 80% at 3 A g-1 for 2100 cycles.

Dexmedetomidine alleviates cognitive impairment by promoting hippocampal neurogenesis via BDNF/TrkB/CREB signaling pathway in hypoxic-ischemic neonatal rats

AIMS

Dexmedetomidine (DEX) has been reported to alleviate hypoxic-ischemic brain damage (HIBD) in neonates. This study aimed to investigate whether DEX improves cognitive impairment by promoting hippocampal neurogenesis via the BDNF/TrkB/CREB signaling pathway in neonatal rats with HIBD.

METHODS

HIBD was induced in postnatal day 7 rats using the Rice-Vannucci method, and DEX (25 μg/kg) was administered intraperitoneally immediately after the HIBD induction. The BDNF/TrkB/CREB pathway was regulated by administering the TrkB receptor antagonist ANA-12 through intraperitoneal injection or by delivering adeno-associated virus (AAV)-shRNA-BDNF via intrahippocampal injection. Western blot was performed to measure the levels of BDNF, TrkB, and CREB. Immunofluorescence staining was utilized to identify the polarization of astrocytes and evaluate the levels of neurogenesis in the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus. Nissl and TTC staining were performed to evaluate the extent of neuronal damage. The MWM test was conducted to evaluate spatial learning and memory ability.

RESULTS

The levels of BDNF and neurogenesis exhibited a notable decrease in the hippocampus of neonatal rats after HIBD, as determined by RNA-sequencing technology. Our results demonstrated that treatment with DEX effectively increased the protein expression of BDNF and the phosphorylation of TrkB and CREB, promoting neurogenesis in the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus in neonatal rats with HIBD. Specifically, DEX treatment significantly augmented the expression of BDNF in hippocampal astrocytes, while decreasing the proportion of detrimental A1 astrocytes and increasing the proportion of beneficial A2 astrocytes in neonatal rats with HIBD. Furthermore, inhibiting the BDNF/TrkB/CREB pathway using either ANA-12 or AAV-shRNA-BDNF significantly counteracted the advantageous outcomes of DEX on hippocampal neurogenesis, neuronal survival, and cognitive improvement.

CONCLUSIONS

DEX promoted neurogenesis in the hippocampus by activating the BDNF/TrkB/CREB pathway through the induction of polarization of A1 astrocytes toward A2 astrocytes, subsequently mitigating neuronal damage and cognitive impairment in neonates with HIBD.

N6-methyladenosine demethylase FTO regulates synaptic and cognitive impairment by destabilizing PTEN mRNA in hypoxic-ischemic neonatal rats

Hypoxic-ischemic brain damage (HIBD) can result in significant global rates of neonatal death or permanent neurological disability. N6-methyladenosine (m6A) modification of RNA influences fundamental aspects of RNA metabolism, and m6A dysregulation is implicated in various neurological diseases. However, the biological roles and clinical significance of m6A in HIBD remain unclear. We currently evaluated the effect of HIBD on cerebral m6A methylation in RNAs in neonatal rats. The m6A dot blot assay showed a global augmentation in RNA m6A methylation post-HI. Herein, we also report on demethylase FTO, which is markedly downregulated in the hippocampus and is the main factor involved with aberrant m6A modification following HI. By conducting a comprehensive analysis of RNA-seq data and m6A microarray results, we found that transcripts with m6A modifications were more highly expressed overall than transcripts without m6A modifications. The overexpression of FTO resulted in the promotion of Akt/mTOR pathway hyperactivation, while simultaneously inhibiting autophagic function. This is carried out by the demethylation activity of FTO, which selectively demethylates transcripts of phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN), thus promoting its degradation and reduced protein expression after HI. Moreover, the synaptic and neurocognitive disorders induced by HI were effectively reversed through the overexpression of FTO in the hippocampus. Cumulatively, these findings demonstrate the functional importance of FTO-dependent hippocampal m6A methylome in cognitive function and provides novel mechanistic insights into the therapeutic potentials of FTO in neonatal HIBD.

[Relation factor analysis for the short-term preservation of ipsilateral renal function after partial nephrectomy]

Objectives: To analyze the factors relative to the short-term preservation of ipsilateral renal function after partial nephrectomy. Methods: The clinical data of 83 patients who were treated with partial nephrectomy from December 2014 to December 2019 in the Department of Urology, Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center were retrospectively analyzed. There were 54 males and 29 females, aging (M (IQR)) 49 (17) years (range: 27 to 74 years). The ischemia time in operation was 25 (18) minutes (range: 10 to 67 minutes). Emission computed tomography scan and CT scan were performed before (within 1 month) and after (3 to 12 months) surgery. The volume of the ipsilateral and contralateral kidney was measured on the basis of preoperative and postoperative CT scans. The glomerular filtration rate (GFR) specifically in each kidney was estimated by emission computed tomography. Recovery from ischemia is determined by the formula: GFR preservation/volume saved×100%. Linear regression was used to explore the factors ralative to the short-term preservation of ipsilateral renal function after partial nephrectomy. Results: The GFR preservation of the ipsilateral kidney was 80.9 (25.2) % (range: 31.0% to 109.4%). The volume loss of the kidney resulted in a decrease of 12.0% (5.8 ml/(min×1.96 m2)) of GFR, while the ischemic injury resulted in a decrease of 6.5% (2.5 ml/(min×1.96 m2)) of GFR. The volume saved from the ipsilateral kidney was 87.1 (12.9) % (range: 27.0% to 131.7%). Recovery from ischemia was 93.5 (17.5) % (range:44.3% to 178.3%). In multivariate analysis, GFR preservation of the ipsilateral kidney was significantly correlated with the volume saved of the ipsilateral kidney (β=0.383, 95%CI: 0.144 to 0.622, P=0.002). It was not related to the ischemia time (β=0.046, 95%CI:-0.383 to 0.475, P=0.831). Conclusion: In the condition of limited ischemic time, in the short term ipsilateral renal function after partial nephrectomy is mainly determined by the loss of kidney volume, while ischemic injury only plays a minor role.

Activation of the CD200/CD200R1 axis attenuates neuroinflammation and improves postoperative cognitive dysfunction via the PI3K/Akt/NF-κB signaling pathway in aged mice

BACKGROUND

Postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) is a neurological complication occurring after anesthesia and surgery. Neuroinflammation plays a critical role in the pathogenesis of POCD, and the activation of the cluster of differentiation 200 (CD200)/CD200R1 axis improves neurological recovery in various neurological disorders by modulating inflammation. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact and underlying mechanism of CD200/CD200R1 axis on POCD in aged mice.

METHODS

The model of POCD was established in aged mice. To assess the learning and memory abilities of model mice, the Morris water maze test was implemented. CD200Fc (CD200 fusion protein), CD200R1 Ab (anti-CD200R1 antibody), and 740Y-P (a specific PI3K activator) were used to evaluate the effects of the CD200/CD200R1/PI3K/Akt/NF-κB signaling pathway on hippocampal microglial polarization, neuroinflammation, synaptic activity, and cognition in mice.

RESULTS

It was observed that anesthesia/surgery induced cognitive decline in aged mice, increased the levels of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), interleukin (IL)-6, IL-1 β and decreased the levels of postsynaptic density protein 95 (PSD-95), synaptophysin (SYN) in the hippocampus. Moreover, CD200Fc and 740Y-P attenuated neuroinflammation and synaptic deficits and reversed cognitive impairment via the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/ protein kinase B (Akt)/nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) signaling pathway, whereas CD200R1 Ab administration exerted the opposite effects. Our results further show that the CD200/CD200R1 axis modulates M1/M2 polarization in hippocampal microglia via the PI3K/Akt/NF-κB signaling pathway.

CONCLUSIONS

Our findings indicate that the activation of the CD200/CD200R1 axis reduces neuroinflammation, synaptic deficits, and cognitive impairment in the hippocampus of aged mice by regulating microglial M1/M2 polarization via the PI3K/Akt/NF-κB signaling pathway.

Interface Engineering with Dynamics-Mechanics Coupling for Highly Reactive and Reversible Aqueous Zinc-Ion Batteries

The practical application of AZIBs is hindered by problems such as dendrites and hydrogen evolution reactions caused by the thermodynamic instability of Zinc (Zn) metal. Modification of the Zn surface through interface engineering can effectively solve the above problems. Here, sulfonate-derivatized graphene-boronene nanosheets (G&B-S) composite interfacial layer is prepared to modulate the Zn plating/stripping and mitigates the side reactions with electrolyte through a simple and green electroplating method. Thanks to the electronegativity of the sulfonate groups, the G&B-S interface promotes a dendrite-free deposition behavior through a fast desolvation process and a uniform interfacial electric field mitigating the tip effect. Theoretical calculations and QCM-D experiments confirmed the fast dynamic mechanism and excellent mechanical properties of the G&B-S interfacial layer. By coupling the dynamics-mechanics action, the G&B-S@Zn symmetric battery is cycled for a long-term of 1900 h at a high current density of 5 mA cm-2 , with a low overpotential of ≈30 mV. Furthermore, when coupled with the LMO cathode, the LMO//G&B-S@Zn cell also exhibits excellent performance, indicating the durability of the G&B-S@Zn anode. Accordingly, this novel multifunctional interfacial layer offers a promising approach to significantly enhance the electrochemical performance of AZIBs.

Scientific issues of zinc-bromine flow batteries and mitigation strategies

Zinc-bromine flow batteries (ZBFBs) are promising candidates for the large-scale stationary energy storage application due to their inherent scalability and flexibility, low cost, green, and environmentally friendly characteristics. ZBFBs have been commercially available for several years in both grid scale and residential energy storage applications. Nevertheless, their continued development still presents challenges associated with electrodes, separators, electrolyte, as well as their operational chemistry. Therefore, rational design of these components in ZBFBs is of utmost importance to further improve the overall device performance. In this review, the focus is on the scientific understanding of the fundamental electrochemistry and functional components of ZBFBs, with an emphasis on the technical challenges of reaction chemistry, development of functional materials, and their application in ZBFBs. Current limitations of ZBFBs with future research directions in the development of high performance ZBFBs are suggested.

Molecular recognition effect enabled by novel crown ether as macrocyclic host towards highly reversible Zn anode

Aqueous Zn2+ ion batteries present notable advantages, including high abundance, low toxicity, and intrinsic nonflammability. However, they exhibit severe irreversibility due to uncontrolled dendrite growth and corrosion reactions, which limit their practical applications. Inspired by their distinct molecular recognition characteristics, supramolecular crown ethers featuring interior cavity sizes identical to the diameter of Zn2+ ions were screened as macrocyclic hosts to optimize the Zn2+ coordination environment, facilitating the suppression of the reactivity of H2O molecules and inducing the in-situ formation of organic-inorganic hybrid dual-protective interphase. The in-situ assembled interphase confers the system with an "ion-sieving" effect to repel H2O molecules and facilitate rapid Zn2+ transport, enabling the suppression of side reactions and uniform deposition of Zn2+ ions. Consequently, we were able to achieve dendrite-free Zn2+ plating/stripping at 98.4% Coulombic efficiency for approximately 300 cycles in Zn||Cu cell, steady charge-discharge for 1360 h in Zn||Zn symmetric cell, and improved cyclability of 70% retention for 200 cycles in Zn||LMO full cell, outlining a promising strategy to challenge lithium-ion batteries in low-cost, and large-scale applications.

Large Interlayer Distance and Heteroatom-Doping of Graphite Provide New Insights into the Dual-Ion Storage Mechanism in Dual-Carbon Batteries

Dual-ion batteries (DIBs) is a promising technology for large-scale energy storage. However, it is still questionable how material structures affect the anion storage behavior. In this paper, we synthesis graphite with an ultra-large interlayer distance and heteroatomic doping to systematically investigate the combined effects on DIBs. The large interlayer distance of 0.51 nm provides more space for anion storage, while the doping of the heteroatoms reduces the energy barriers for anion intercalation and migration and enhances rapid ionic storage at interfaces simultaneously. Based on the synergistic effects, the DIBs composed of carbon cathode and lithium anode afford ultra-high capacity of 240 mAh g-1 at current density of 100 mA g-1 . Dual-carbon batteries (DCBs) using the graphite as both of cathode and anode steadily cycle 2400 times at current density of 1 A g-1 . Hence, this work provides a reference to the strategy of material designs of DIBs and DCBs.

Zinc-Bromine Rechargeable Batteries: From Device Configuration, Electrochemistry, Material to Performance Evaluation

Zinc-bromine rechargeable batteries (ZBRBs) are one of the most powerful candidates for next-generation energy storage due to their potentially lower material cost, deep discharge capability, non-flammable electrolytes, relatively long lifetime and good reversibility. However, many opportunities remain to improve the efficiency and stability of these batteries for long-life operation. Here, we discuss the device configurations, working mechanisms and performance evaluation of ZBRBs. Both non-flow (static) and flow-type cells are highlighted in detail in this review. The fundamental electrochemical aspects, including the key challenges and promising solutions, are discussed, with particular attention paid to zinc and bromine half-cells, as their performance plays a critical role in determining the electrochemical performance of the battery system. The following sections examine the key performance metrics of ZBRBs and assessment methods using various ex situ and in situ/operando techniques. The review concludes with insights into future developments and prospects for high-performance ZBRBs.

[Clinicopathological analysis of pseudostratified ependymal tubules in ovarian mature teratoma]

Objective: To investigate the morphology and immunohistochemical (IHC) expression of pseudostratified ependymal tubules in ovarian mature teratoma (MT). Methods: Five cases of ovarian MT with pseudostratified ependymal tubules were collected from Shenzhen Hospital(Futian) of Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine and the Eighth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University from March 2019 to March 2022. In addition, 15 cases of ovarian MT with monolayer ependymal epithelium from Shenzhen Hospital (Futian) of Guangzhou University of Chinese medicine and seven cases of immature teratoma (IMT) from Hainan Provincial People's Hospital from March 2019 to March 2022 were collected as control. The morphologic characteristics and immunophenotypes of pseudostratified ependymal tubules, monolayer ependymal epithelium, and primitive neural epithelial tubules were observed and compared by H&E stain and IHC expression pattern of genes related to the differentiation status of neuroepithelium, namely SALL4, Glypican3, nestin, SOX2, Foxj1, and Ki-67. Results: Mean age of the five patients of ovarian MT with pseudostratified ependymal tubules was 26 years (range from 19 to 31 years). Two tumors were located in the left ovary and three in the right. All five cases were excised, and clinical follow-up was available (mean follow-up 1.5 years; range 0.5 to 3 years). No recurrence was noted in any cases. The pseudostratified ependymal tubules of ovarian MT, which were lined with columnar or oval epithelia up to 4-6 layers, were morphologically similar to the primitive neuroepithelial tubules of IMT and different from monolayer ependymal epithelium of ovarian MT. By immunohistochemistry, SALL4 and Glypican3 were negative, Foxj1 was positive and Ki-67 index was lower in the pseudostratified ependymal tubules and the monolayer ependymal epithelium of ovarian MT. However, the primitive neuroepithelial tubules of IMT showed variably expression of SALL4 and Glypican3, were negative for Foxj1 and high Ki-67 index. All the above three groups expressed nestin and SOX2. Conclusions: The pseudostratified ependymal tubules of ovarian MT, which have morphological similarities to the primitive neuroepithelial tubules of IMT, are similar to the monolayer ependymal epithelia of the MT in immunophenotype. IHC assessment of Foxj1 and Ki-67 is helpful to differentiate the pseudostratified ependymal tubules of ovarian MT from the primitive neuroepithelial tubules of IMT.

Bifunctional Dynamic Adaptive Interphase Reconfiguration for Zinc Deposition Modulation and Side Reaction Suppression in Aqueous Zinc Ion Batteries

Dendrite growth and electrode/electrolyte interface side reactions in aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) not only impair the battery lifetime but also pose serious safety concerns for the battery system, hindering its application in large-scale energy storage systems. Herein, by introducing positively charged chlorinated graphene quantum dot (Cl-GQD) additives into the electrolyte, a bifunctional dynamic adaptive interphase is proposed to achieve Zn deposition regulation and side reaction suppression in AZIBs. During the charging process, the positively charged Cl-GQDs are adsorbed onto the Zn surface, acting as an electrostatic shield layer that facilitates smooth Zn deposition. In addition, the relative hydrophobic properties of chlorinated groups also build a hydrophobic protective interface for the Zn anode, mitigating the corrosion of the Zn anode by water molecules. More importantly, the Cl-GQDs are not consumed throughout the cell operation and exhibit a dynamic reconfiguration behavior, which ensures the stability and sustainability of this dynamic adaptive interphase. Consequently, the cells mediated by the dynamic adaptive interphase enable dendrite-free Zn plating/stripping for more than 2000 h. Particularly, even at 45.5% depth of discharge, the modified Zn//LiMn₂O₄ hybrid cells still retain 86% capacity retention after 100 cycles, confirming the feasibility of this simple approach for application with limited Zn sources.

HRG inhibits liver cancer lung metastasis by suppressing neutrophil extracellular trap formation

BACKGROUND

Distant metastasis is a sign of poor prognosis for cancer patients. Extrahepatic liver cancer metastases commonly spread to the lung. Remodelling of the metastatic microenvironment is essential for tumour metastasis. Neutrophil-associated metastatic microenvironment contributes to the early metastatic colonisation of cancer cells in the lung.

METHOD

The lung metastasis models were constructed via treated cancer cells by tail vein injection into mice. And samples of lung were harvested at the indicated time to analyze tumor growth and immune cells in the microenvironment. Tumors and lung metastasis specimens were obtained via surgical operations for research purposes. Neutrophils were obtained from peripheral blood of patients with liver cancer or healthy donors (HD).

RESULTS

Hepatocellular carcinoma cells reduce the secretion of histidine-rich glycoprotein (HRG), regulate the recruitment and activation of neutrophils in the metastatic microenvironment and promote the production of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs), thereby promoting liver cancer lung metastasis. HRG binds to FCγR1 on the neutrophil membrane while inhibiting PI3K and NF-κB activation, thereby reducing IL-8 secretion to reduce neutrophil recruitment. Meanwhile, HRG inhibited IL8-MAPK and NF-κB pathway activation and ROS production, resulting in reduced NETs formation.

CONCLUSIONS

Our study reveals that liver cancer regulates neutrophil recruitment and NETs formation in the metastatic microenvironment by reducing HRG secretion, thereby promoting tumour lung metastasis. The results of this study will contribute to the development of possible strategies for treating metastases.

[Efficacy of partial nephrectomy in patients with localized renal carcinoma: a 20-year experience of 2 046 patients in a single center]

Objectives: To analyze the long-term survival of patients with localized renal cell carcinoma after partical nephrectomy. Methods: The clinicopathological records and survival follow-up data of 2 046 patients with localized renal cell carcinoma, who were treated with partial nephrectomy from August 2001 to February 2021 in the Department of Urology, Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center, were retrospectively analyzed. There were 1 402 males and 644 females, aged (M(IQR)) 51 (19) years (range: 6 to 86 years). The primary end point of this study was cancer-specific survival. Survival curves were estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method, and the difference test was performed by Log-rank test. Univariate and multivariate Cox analysis were fitted to determine factors associated with cancer-specific survival. Results: The follow-up time was 49.2 (48.0) months (range: 1 to 229 months), with 1 974 patients surviving and 72 dying. The median cancer-specific survival time has not yet been reached. The 5- and 10-year cancer specific survival rates were 97.0% and 91.2%, respectively. The 10-year cancer-specific survival rates for stage pT1a (n=1 447), pT1b (n=523) and pT2 (n=58) were 95.3%, 81.8%, and 81.7%, respectively. The 10-year cancer-specific survival rates of patients with nuclear grade 1 (n=226), 2 (n=1 244) and 3 to 4 (n=278) were 96.6%, 89.4%, and 85.5%, respectively. There were no significant differences in 5-year cancer-specific survival rates among patients underwent open, laparoscopic, or robotic surgery (96.7% vs. 97.1% vs. 97.5%, P=0.600). Multivariate analysis showed that age≥50 years (HR=3.93, 95%CI: 1.82 to 8.47, P<0.01), T stage (T1b vs. T1a: HR=3.31, 95%CI: 1.83 to 5.99, P<0.01; T2+T3 vs. T1a: HR=2.88, 95%CI: 1.00 to 8.28, P=0.049) and nuclear grade (G3 to 4 vs. G1: HR=2.81, 95%CI: 1.01 to 7.82, P=0.048) were independent prognostic factors of localized renal cell carcinoma after partial nephrectomy. Conclusions: The long-term cancer-specific survival rates of patients with localized renal cancer after partial nephrectomy are satisfactory. The type of operation (open, laparoscopic, or robotic) has no significant effect on survival. However, patients with older age, higher nuclear grade, and higher T stage have a lower cancer-specific survival rate. Grasping surgical indications, attaching importance to preoperative evaluation, perioperative management, and postoperative follow-up, could benefit achieving satisfactory long-term survival.

DEVELOPMENT OF AN EXTENDED-RANGE BONNER SPHERE SPECTROMETER FOR CHINA INITIATIVE ACCELERATOR-DRIVEN SYSTEM

To measure the extended-range neutron spectra and calibrate the extended-range neutron dosemeters of the China initiative Accelerator-Driven System (CiADS), an Extended-range Bonner Sphere Spectrometer (EBSS) has been developed. The EBSS was designed based on the PHITS codes, investigating various combinations of materials and diameters of the neutron moderators and the neutron multipliers for extended-range neutrons. Finally, seven polyethylene-only spheres and seven extended-range spheres were selected and subsequently built. The neutron multipliers of the extended-range spheres embedded concentric shells of lead, copper and tungsten. The response functions of the EBSS were analyzed and experimentally validated. It was subsequently tested with 252Cf neutron source and cosmic ray neutron source. The results demonstrate that the EBSS is capable of accurately measuring neutron spectra.

[Construction of a human health literacy indicator system for prevention of parasitic diseases based on Delphi method]

OBJECTIVE

To construct a human health literacy indicator system for prevention of parasitic diseases based on Delphi method.

METHODS

Based on literature reviews and expert interviews, a questionnaire was designed and a two-round Delphi consultation was performed. A human health literacy indicator system for prevention of parasitic diseases was constructed according to the deletion criteria and experts' advice.

RESULTS

A total of 14 experts completed the two-round consultation. The second-round authority coefficients were 0.91 to 0.96 for the first-level indicators, 0.87 to 0.97 for the second-level indicators and 0.86 to 0.97 for the third-level indicators. A human health literacy indicator system for prevention of parasitic diseases was constructed with the main framework of basic knowledge and awareness, healthy behaviors, and healthy skills, which contained 3 first-level indicators, 12 second-level indicators and 48 third-level indicators. Among the three first-level indicators, basic knowledge and awareness had the highest weighting coefficient (0.336 5), followed by healthy behaviors (0.334 9), and healthy skills had the lowest weighting coefficient (0.328 6). The three secondary-level indicators with the highest combined weights included awareness of the epidemic status (0.088 2), awareness of the resource of infection (0.085 8) and basic awareness of parasitic diseases (0.085 5).

CONCLUSION

A human health literacy indicator system for prevention of parasitic diseases is preliminarily constructed, which provides insights into the development of health literacy evaluation tools for prevention of parasitic diseases in the new era.

[Characteristics and risk factors of spinal epidural hematoma after unilateral biportal endoscopic lumbar interbody fusion]

Objective: To investigate the incidence, characteristics and risk factors of spinal epidural hematoma after unilateral biportal endoscopic (UBE) lumbar spine surgery. Methods: The clinical data of 105 patients who underwent lumbar spine surgery under UBE in Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital from February 2020 to March 2021 were retrospectively reviewed. Of the patients, 48(45.7%) were male and 57(54.3%) were female, the mean age was (60.1±11.4) years (ranged 26 to 85 years). The MRI images at the third day post-surgery were observed, and the occurrence of hematoma was counted. Patients were assigned to normal group and hematoma group based on the presence of hematoma or not. The related clinical indicators of each patients were collected and used for comparison between two different groups. Logistic stepwise regression model was used to analyze whether each index was a risk factor for hematoma after the UBE lumbar fusion. Results: The total hematoma incidence rate was 28.6%(30/105), the symptomatic hematoma rate was 6.7%(7/105), and the hematoma reoperation rate was 0.9%(1/105). Univariate logistic regression analysis showed that hypertension (OR=3.368, 95%CI: 1.389-8.171), diabetes (OR=3.589, 95%CI: 1.230-10.476), admission systolic blood pressure>140 mmHg (1 mmHg=0.133 kPa,OR=3.687, 95%CI: 1.493-9.017), platelets<200×10⁹/L (OR=0.300, 95%CI: 0.119-0.785), preoperative blood calcium<2.25 mmol/L (OR=0.340, 95%CI: 0.142-0.818), spinal stenosis grade D (OR=4.462, 95%CI: 1.810-10.996) were possible risk factors for spinal hematoma after UBE lumbar fusion. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that admission blood pressure systolic blood pressure>140 mmHg (OR=3.788, 95%CI:1.055-13.606), preoperative blood calcium<2.25 mmol/L (OR=78.544, 95%CI:3.895-1 584.058) and spinal stenosis grade D (OR=3.698, 95%CI:1.110-12.325) were risk factors for spinal hematoma after UBE lumbar fusion (all P<0.05). Conclusion: The types of spinal canal hematoma after UBE lumbar fusion include localized and extended type. The risk factors for hematoma include high systolic blood pressure on admission, low preoperative blood calcium and severe spinal stenosis.

Understanding the mechanisms of zeolite in inhibiting Pb accumulation in different rice cultivars (Oryza sativa)

Zeolite is one of the potential passivating amendments for the immobilization of lead (Pb) in contaminated farmland soils. In this study, pot experiments were carried out to investigate the effects and the mechanisms of zeolite on Pb accumulation in two rice cultivars grown in a slightly Pb-contaminated soil. Results showed that Pb content in grains of Zheyou 18 (ZY-18) decreased by the addition of 6 g zeolite kg^-1 soil (E6), which can be attributed to the reduction in soil Pb availability, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), water-soluble iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn), and the transfer factor from soil to grain (TF_soil-grain). These reductions were mainly resulting from the significant increase in soil pH, glutathione (GSH), phytochelatins (PCs), and non-protein (NPT) content in rice root, and the decrease in soil redox potential (Eh), due to zeolite addition. Pb content in brown rice of DL-5 was not significantly affected with E6 treatment, whereas it was raised by applying 12 g zeolite kg^-1 soil (E12). The increase of Pb content of Donglian 5 (DL-5) grains with E12 treatment can be attributed to more Pb uptake by the root, higher Pb transfer factors (TFs) between various parts of rice, and significant decrease in GSH, PCs, and NPT contents in the root. It is concluded that a suitable rate of zeolite addition can immobilize Pb in slightly Pb-contaminated acidic soil. However, the final immobilization effect also depends on rice cultivars.

Stabilization of Lithium Metal Interfaces by Constructing Composite Artificial Solid Electrolyte Interface with Mesoporous TiO2 and Perfluoropolymers

The next generation of high-energy-density storage devices is expected to be rechargeable lithium metal batteries. However, unstable metal-electrolyte interfaces, dendrite growth, and volume expansion will compromise lithium metal batteries (LMB) safety and life. A simple drop-casting method is used to create a double-layer functional interface composed of inorganic mesoporous TiO₂ and F-rich organics PFDMA. For high-quality lithium deposition, TiO₂ can provide uniform mechanical pressure, abundant mesoporous channels, and increased ionic conductivity, while PFDMA provides enough F to form LiF in the first cycle and improves Li-electrolyte compatibility. Experiments and simulations are combined to investigate the optimized mechanism of the LiF-rich solid electrolyte interface (SEI). The high binding energy of organic matter and Li demonstrates that Li⁺ preferentially binds with the F atom in organic matter. As a result, the tightly bound double-layer structure can inhibit lithium dendrite growth and slow electrolyte decomposition. Consequently, the symmetric Li||Li cell has a high stability performance of over 800 h. The assembled LiFePO₄ ||Li cell can sustain 300 cycles at a 1 C rate and has a reversible capacity of 136.7 mAh g^-1 .

Deep learning recommendation algorithm based on semantic mining

This paper proposes Deep Semantic Mining based Recommendation (DSMR), which can extract user features and item attribute features more accurately by deeply mining the semantic information of review text and item description documents recommend. First, the proposed model uses the BERT pre-training model to process review texts and item description documents, and deeply mine user characteristics and item attributes, which effectively alleviates the problems of data sparseness and item cold start; Then, the forward LSTM is used to pay attention to the changes of user preferences over time, and a more accurate recommendation is obtained; finally, in the model training stage, the experimental data are randomly divided into 1 to 5 points, 1:1:1:1:1. Extraction ensures that the amount of data for each score is equal, so that the results are more accurate and the model is more robust. Experiments are carried out on four commonly used Amazon public data sets, and the results show that with the root mean square error as the evaluation index, the error of DSMR recommendation results is at least 11.95% lower on average than the two classic recommendation models based only on rating data. At the same time, it is better than the three latest recommendation models based on review text, and it is 5.1% lower than the best model on average.

A Self-Regulated Electrostatic Shielding Layer toward Dendrite-Free Zn Batteries

Although aqueous Zn batteries have become a more sustainable alternative to lithium-ion batteries owing to their intrinsic security, their practical applications are limited by dendrite formation and hydrogen reactions. The first application of a rare earth metal type addition to Zn batteries, cerium chloride (CeCl₃ ), as an effective, low-cost, and green electrolyte additive that facilitates the formation of a dynamic electrostatic shielding layer around the Zn protuberance to induce uniform Zn deposition is presented. After introducing CeCl₃ additives, the electrochemical characterizations, in situ optical microscopy observation, in situ differential electrochemical mass spectrometry, along with density functional theory calculations, and finite element method simulations reveal resisted Zn dendritic growth and enhanced electrolyte stability. As a result, the Zn-Zn cells using the CeCl₃ additive exhibit a long cycling stability of 2600 h at 2 mA cm^-2 , an impressive cumulative areal capacity of 3.6 Ah cm^-2 at 40 mA cm^-2 , and a high Coulombic efficiency of ≈99.7%. The fact that the Zn-LiFePO₄ cells with proposed electrolyte retain capacity significantly better than the additive-free case is even more exciting.

Dexmedetomidine alleviates olfactory cognitive dysfunction by promoting neurogenesis in the subventricular zone of hypoxic-ischemic neonatal rats

Background: Hypoxic-ischemic brain damage (HIBD) is the main cause of neurological dysfunction in neonates. Olfactory cognitive function is important for feeding, the ability to detect hazardous situations and social relationships. However, only a few studies have investigated olfactory cognitive dysfunction in neonates with HIBD; furthermore, the specific mechanisms involved are yet to be elucidated. It has been reported that neurogenesis in the subventricular zone (SVZ) is linked to olfactory cognitive function. Recently, dexmedetomidine (DEX) has been shown to provide neuroprotection in neonates following HIBD. In the present study, we investigated whether DEX could improve olfactory cognitive dysfunction in neonatal rats following HIBD and attempted to determine the underlying mechanisms.

Methods: We induced HIBD in rats using the Rice–Vannucci model, and DEX (25 μg/kg, i.p.) was administered immediately after the induction of HIBD. Next, we used triphenyl tetrazolium chloride (TTC) staining and the Zea-longa score to assess the success of modelling. The levels of BDNF, TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-6 were determined by western blotting. Immunofluorescence staining was used to detect microglial activation and microglial M1/M2 polarization as well as to evaluate the extent of neurogenesis in the SVZ. To evaluate the olfactory cognitive function, the rats in each group were raised until post-natal days 28–35; then, we performed the buried food test and the olfactory memory test.

Results: Analysis showed that HIBD induced significant brain infarction, neurological deficits, and olfactory cognitive dysfunction. Furthermore, we found that DEX treatment significantly improved olfactory cognitive dysfunction in rat pups with HIBD. DEX treatment also increased the number of newly formed neuroblasts (BrdU/DCX) and neurons (BrdU/NeuN) in the SVZ by increasing the expression of BDNF in rat pups with HIBD. Furthermore, analysis showed that the neurogenic effects of DEX were possibly related to the inhibition of inflammation and the promotion of M1 to M2 conversion in the microglia.

Conclusion: Based on the present findings, DEX treatment could improve olfactory cognitive dysfunction in neonatal rats with HIBD by promoting neurogenesis in the SVZ and enhancing the expression of BDNF in the microglia. It was possible associated that DEX inhibited neuroinflammation and promoted M1 to M2 conversion in the microglia.

An Unprecedented Fireproof, Anion-Immobilized Composite Electrolyte Obtained via Solidifying Carbonate Electrolyte for Safe and High-Power Solid-State Lithium-Ion Batteries

The update of electrolytes from a liquid state to a solid state is considered effective in improving the safety and energy density of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Although numerous efforts have been made, solid-state electrolytes' (SSEs) insufficient charge transfer capability remains a significant obstruction to practical applications. Herein, a fireproof and anion-immobilized composite electrolyte is designed by solidifying carbonate electrolyte, exhibiting superior Li-ion conductivity (11.5 mS cm^-1 at 30 °C) and Li-ion transference number (0.90), which endows LIBs excellent rate capability and cycling stability. Elaborate characteristics and theoretical calculations demonstrate the presence of robust anion-molecule coordination (composed of lithium bond and Coulomb force) enables a more efficient ion transport, where the mobility of Li⁺ ion is enhanced meanwhile the anions are immobilized. This work highlights how the strong interactions between electrolyte components can be used to simultaneously regulate the migration of Li⁺ ion and anion, and realize a one-step conversion of inflammable liquid-state electrolyte to nonflammable solid-state electrolyte.

Chloride application weakens cadmium immobilization by lime in paddy rice soil

Contamination of agricultural products by cadmium (Cd) is a global health problem, causing chronic abnormalities. The consumption of rice, the most-consumed foods, is an important exposure route of Cd to human body. Chloride (Cl^-) is reported to increase Cd uptake by rice; however, the effect on Cd uptake and accumulation by rice in the presence of lime is not clear. Therefore, a pot culture experiment was performed to explore the influence of Cl^- on the absorption and accumulation of Cd in rice plants under lime remediation and its possible mechanisms. The results showed that Cl^- promoted Cd accumulation in rice grains, mainly because of increased Cd bioavailability in the soil and by impeding the formation of iron plaques on rice roots, which reduced chelating and precipitation of Cd. Moreover, increased overexpression of the main transporters of Cd in rice roots, including OsNramp5, OsNramp1, OsIRTs and OsHMA2, favored the upward translocation of Cd from the root to shoot and increased the transfer factors (TFs) from soil to root, root-stem, leaf to grain, and soil to grain. Therefore, the application of Cl-rich materials to Cd-contaminated rice fields should be avoided during liming of the soil for Cd immobilization.

Prussian Blue Scavenger Ameliorates Hepatic Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury by Inhibiting Inflammation and Reducing Oxidative Stress

Oxidative stress and excessive inflammatory responses are the two critical mechanisms of hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury (HIRI) encountered in many clinical settings, including following hepatectomy and liver transplantation. Effective anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative pharmacological interventions are urgently needed to counter HIRI. The present study showed that a biocompatible Prussian blue (PB) scavenger with reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging and anti-inflammatory properties might be used a promising treatment for HIRI. Following intravenous administration, PB scavenger was mainly distributed in the liver, where it showed excellent ability to alleviate apoptosis, tissue injury and organ dysfunction after HIRI. PB scavenger was found to protect liver tissue by scavenging ROS, reducing neutrophil infiltration and promoting macrophage M2 polarization. In addition, PB scavenger significantly reduced oxidative stress in primary hepatocytes, restoring cell viability under oxidative stress condition. PB scavenger effectively reduced lipopolysaccharide-stimulated inflammation in RAW 264.7 cells. These findings indicate that PB scavenger may be a potential therapeutic agent for the treatment of HIRI, providing an alternative treatment for ROS-associated and inflammatory liver diseases.

Effects and mechanisms of Cd remediation with zeolite in brown rice (Oryza sativa)

The effects of zeolite amendment on the Cd absorption and accumulation of two varieties of rice, ZY-18 (Zheyou 18, hybrid indica) and DL-5 (Donglian 5, conventional indica), planted in a slightly Cd-contaminated paddy soil, and the associated mechanisms were studied based on a pot experiment. The results showed that zeolite addition significantly reduced the Cd availability in the soil by the increasing of soil pH and the Cd sorption capacity of soil, as well as the reduction of Eh, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and the water-soluble Fe/Mn in the soil. The decrease in the amount of Fe and Cd in iron plaques on rice roots treated with zeolite resulted in the reduction of Cd uptake by rice roots. Zeolite application decreased the Cd contents in the roots, stems and leaves, and finally the brown rice through the inhibition of uptake and translocation of Cd by rice plant. The Cd concentration in rice grains of ZY-18 was more decreased than that of DL-5, which was attributed to its higher pH and lower Eh, DOC, and Cd availability in the soil, higher mounts of iron plaque and Cd in plaques on rice roots, and lower root-to-grain transfer factor (TF_root-grain) of ZY-18.

Developing a near-infrared spectroscopy and microwave-induced thermoacoustic tomography-based dual-modality imaging system

Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) techniques can provide noninvasive in vivo hemoglobin oxygenation information but suffer from relatively low resolution in biological tissue imaging. Microwave-induced thermoacoustic tomography (TAT) can produce high-resolution images of the biological tissue anatomy but offer limited physiological information of samples because of the single species of the chromophore it maps. To overcome these drawbacks and take advantage of the merits of the two independent techniques, we built a dual-modality system by combining a NIRS system and a TAT system to image biological tissues. A series of phantom trials were carried out to demonstrate the performance of the new system. The spatial resolution is about 1 mm, with a penetration depth of at least 17.5 mm in the human subject. A cohort of five healthy subjects was recruited to conduct real-time forearm venous and arterial cuff occlusion experiments. Numerous results showed that this dual-modality system could measure oxygen metabolism and simultaneously provide anatomical structure changes of biological tissues. We also found that although the hemoglobin concentration varied consistently with many other published papers, the TAT signal intensity of veins showed an opposite variation tendency in the venous occlusion stage compared with other existing work. A detailed explanation is given to account for the discrepancy, thus, providing another possibility for the forearm experiments using TAT. Furthermore, based on the multiple types of information afforded by this dual-modality system, a pilot clinical application for the diagnosis of anemia is discussed.

High-Performance Aqueous Zinc Batteries Based on Organic/Organic Cathodes Integrating Multiredox Centers

Organic cathode materials with redox-active sites and flexible structure are promising for developing aqueous zinc ion batteries with high capacity and large output power. However, the energy storage of most organic hosts relies on the coordination/incoordination reaction between Zn²⁺ /H⁺ and a single functional group, which result in inferior capacity, low discharge platform, and structural instability. Here, the lead is taken in in situ electrodepositing stable poly(1,5-naphthalenediamine, 1,5-NAPD) as interlayer and excellent conductive poly(para-aminophenol, pAP) skin onto nanoporous carbon in sequence for the structural optimization of organic/organic cathodes, designated as C@multi-layer polymer. In situ analyses, electrochemical measurements, and theoretical calculation prove that both CO and CN active groups can act as a strong electron donor as well as Zn²⁺ host during the discharging process. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of the double organic layers, C@multi-layer polymer delivers high capacity, long lifespan, and excellent capacity reservation even at large discharge current and commercial mass loading (>10 mg cm^-2 ). Introducing multiredox centers into one organic composites will provide new insights into designing advanced Zn-organic batteries.

Tailoring double-layer aromatic polymers with multi-active sites towards high performance aqueous Zn-organic batteries

Unlike most reported organic-inorganic cathodes, the organic-organic zinc hosts can fully exploit the flexible structures and various redox chemistries of the organics. Herein, nanoporous carbon electrodeposited with a wrapped poly(meta-aminophenol, 3-AP) sandwich layer and a good conductive poly(para-aminophenol, 4-AP) skin, designated as a C@poly(3-AP)/poly(4-AP) cathode, has been synthesized for the first time via a novel two-step electrodeposition method. The synergistic effect of the double-layer polymers endows the C@poly(3-AP)/poly(4-AP) cathode with an ultrahigh specific capacity, excellent rate performance and long-term lifespan that are superior to those of the pristine C@poly(3-AP) and C@poly(4-AP) electrodes. Also, the strong electron donor capabilities of the multiple active sites (CO and CN) in the hetero-structural organic cathode can exhibit symmetrical bending to host inserted Zn ions during the discharge process, which opens up new opportunities to construct advanced Zn-organic batteries.

[Establishment of a deep learning-based visual model for intelligent recognition of Oncomelania hupensis]

OBJECTIVE

To establish a deep learning-based visual model for intelligent recognition of Oncomelania hupensis, the intermediate host of Schistosoma japonicum, and evaluate the effects of different training strategies for O. hupensis image recognition.

METHODS

A total of 2 614 datasets of O. hupensis snails and 4 similar snails were generated through field sampling and internet capture, and were divided into training sets and test sets. An intelligent recognition model was created based on deep learning, and was trained and tested. The precision, sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, F1 score and Youden index were calculated. In addition, the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve of the model for snail recognition was plotted to evaluate the effects of "new learning", "transfer learning" and "transfer learning + data enhancement" training strategies on the accuracy of the model for snail recognition.

RESULTS

Under the "transfer learning + data enhancement" strategy, the precision, sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, Youden index and F1 score of the model were 90.10%, 91.00%, 97.50%, 96.20%, 88.50% and 90.51% for snail recognition, which were all higher than those under both "new learning" and "transfer learning" strategies. There were significant differences in the sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of the model for snail recognition under "new learning", "transfer learning" and "transfer learning + data enhancement" training strategies (all P values < 0.001). In addition, the area under the ROC curve of the model was highest (0.94) under the "transfer learning + dataenhancement" training strategy.

CONCLUSIONS

This is the first visual model for intelligent recognition of O. hupensis based on deep learning, which shows a high accuracy for snail image recognition. The "transfer learning + data enhancement" training strategy is helpful to improve the accuracy of the model for snail recognition.

Continuous Conductive Networks Built by Prussian Blue Cubes and Mesoporous Carbon Lead to Enhanced Sodium-Ion Storage Performances

The challenges of improving electrical conductivities and enhanced rapid dynamics are active research areas in the modification of Prussian blue (PB) and Prussian blue analogues (PBAs), which are used as excellent cathodes of sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). Herein, the terephthalic acid etched stepwise hollow bulky PB cubes and the intimate contact mesoporous carbon (CMK-3) particles with the adhered minisize PB cubes can together build continuous conductive networks. The composite (donated as N-PB@CMK) has high electrical conductivity, low resistance, and ultrahigh specific surface, which can lead to high capacitive contribution ratios. The N-PB@CMK electrode can deliver a discharge capacity of 120 mAh g^-1 and maintain retention of 85.0% after cycling for 200 cycles at a current density of 100 mA g^-1. Even cycling at 1 A g^-1, the reversible capacity can be measured to 102 mAh g^-1 and exhibit stability over a long cycle. In situ Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns were further measured to illustrate the phase transition of crystal structure along with the extraction/insertion processes of Na⁺ ions. Especially, the assembled full cell with NaTi₂(PO₄)₃@C anode can also show good stability and provide promising insights of applying the N-PB@CMK for energy storage systems in the future.

Plasma metabolome alteration in dairy cows with left displaced abomasum before and after surgical correction

Left displaced abomasum (LDA) leads to substantial changes in the metabolism of dairy cows. Surgical correction of LDA can rapidly improve the health of cows; however, changes in metabolism following surgery are rarely described. To investigate the changes of plasma metabolome in cows with LDA before and after surgical correction, blood samples were collected from 10 healthy postpartum cows and 10 cows with LDA on the day of diagnosis, then again from the LDA cows 14 d after surgery. Serum nonesterified fatty acid, β-hydroxybutyric acid, cortisol and histamine concentration, and antioxidant enzyme (superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase) activities were evaluated, and the metabolic profile in plasma was analyzed using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The results demonstrated that cows with LDA experienced severe negative energy balance and oxidative stress, which can be improved by surgical correction. The metabolic profile was analyzed using multidimensional and univariate statistical analyses, and different metabolites were identified. In total, 102 metabolites differed between cows with LDA and healthy cows. After surgical correction, 65 metabolites changed in cows with LDA, compared with these cows during the LDA event. Following surgical correction, AA levels tended to increase, and lipid levels tended to decrease in cows with LDA. Pathway analysis indicated marked changes in linoleic acid metabolism, Arg biosynthesis, and Gly, Ser, and Thr metabolism in cows at the onset of LDA and following surgical correction. Surgical treatment reversed the changes in AA and lipid metabolism in cows with LDA.

Chemosensory proteins participate in insecticide susceptibility in Rhopalosiphum padi, a serious pest on wheat crops

Rhopalosiphum padi is a worldwide agricultural pest. Chemosensory proteins (CSPs) are considered to be a type of transporters which can bind chemicals from external environments. Previous research showed that the expression of some insect CSPs were significantly increased after exposure to insecticides, and CSPs were involved in insecticide resistance or susceptibility. However, the role of CSPs in the susceptibility and response of R. padi to insecticides is still unknown. In this study, we identified eight CSP (RpCSP) from R. padi by genome-wide investigation. Seven RpCSP genes had two exons, while RpCSP7 had three exons. qPCR analyses showed that the mRNA levels of the eight RpCSP genes were significantly affected by imidacloprid and beta-cypermethrin in different post-treatment periods. Molecular docking predicted that there were hydrogen bonding sites which played key roles in binding of RpCSP4, RpCSP5, RpCSP6, RpCSP7 and RpCSP10 with imidacloprid and beta-cypermethrin. Knockdown of RpCSP4, RpCSP5, RpCSP6 and RpCSP10 by RNA interference significantly increased the aphid mortality under two sublethal concentrations of imidacloprid. Mortalities under two sublethal concentrations of beta-cypermethrin conditions were significantly higher after injection of R. padi with dsCSP4 and dsCSP6. The results indicate that some RpCSP genes are involved in the insecticide susceptibility of R. padi.

[Role of institutional cultural building in the schistosomiasis control program of Jiangsu Province]

Jiangsu Province was once one of the provinces that are hyperendemic for schistosomiasis in China. Following the concerted efforts for nearly 70 years, the transmission of schistosomiasis was interrupted in the province in 2019, which is the first province to achieve the national criteria of interruption of schistosomiasis transmission among the 5 provinces locating in the marshland and lake regions. In addition to political, economic and scientific and technical factors that greatly contribute to the huge achievements from schistosomiasis control in Jiangsu Province, the spiritual implication of Jiangsu schistosomiasis control culture that is mainly characterized by dedication, rigorousness, truth-seeking and innovation play a vital role in the schistosomiasis control program of Jiangsu Province, which encourages generations of schistosomiasis control professionals working in Jiangsu Province to fight against the "God of plague".

Low serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 levels and late delayed radiation-induced brain injury in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma: A case-control study

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

Inflammatory reaction plays a critical role in the pathogenesis of late delayed radiation-induced brain injury (RBI). Low vitamin D levels are closely associated with various immuno-inflammatory diseases, but the relationship with late delayed RBI remains unknown. Here, we aimed to determine the association of serum vitamin D levels with clinical parameters in late delayed RBI patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

METHODS

25-Hydroxyvitamin D3 levels and clinical and cerebrospinal fluid parameters were evaluated in 21 patients with RBI and compared with 90 age-, sex-, and season-matched healthy controls.

RESULTS

25-(OH)D3 levels were lower in patients with RBI compared to controls (40.39 ± 22.11 vs. 64.54 ± 19.89 nmol/L, p < .001), especially for aged ≥60 years (vs. <60 years, p = .038), females (vs. males, p = .012), short latency (<5 years) (vs. ≥5 years, p = .015), and severe impairment (LENT/SOMA score ≥3) (vs. LENT/SOMA score <3, p = .010). Serum 25-(OH)D3 levels were associated with age (r = -.464, p = .015), Latency of RBI (r = .416, p = .031) and LENT/SOMA Scale (r = -.488, p = .010).

CONCLUSIONS

Our data showed that serum 25-(OH)D3 levels were reduced in late delayed RBI patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

[The South-to-North Water Diversion Project and schistosomiasis: an overview]

Before and after the construction of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, a number of studies have been conducted to assess the possibility of the northward spread of Oncomelania snails and schistosomiasis caused by the construction of the project, the survival and reproduction of snails moved north of their natural distribution, and the transmission of schistosomiasis by the survival snails moved north of their natural distribution. The effect of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project on the transmission of schistosomiasis is restricted along the Jiangsu section of the eastern route project of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, and the Water Transfer Project from the Yangtze River to Han River of the middle route project of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project. It has been demonstrated the water diversion pattern via the pump stations and the ecological conditions in the water transfusion channels of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project are unlikely to result in the northward spread of Oncomelania snails or schistosomiasis, and no snails or schistosomiasis spread was found during the surveillance before and after the operation of the eastern route project of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, and the Water Transfer Project from the Yangtze River to Han River of the middle route project of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project. Nevertheless, sustainable surveillance of Oncomelania snails along the South-to-North Water Diversion Project will provide scientific support and safety guarantee for the construction and operation of the subsequent projects.

An "Ether-In-Water" Electrolyte Boosts Stable Interfacial Chemistry for Aqueous Lithium-Ion Batteries

Aqueous batteries are promising devices for electrochemical energy storage because of their high ionic conductivity, safety, low cost, and environmental friendliness. However, their voltage output and energy density are limited by the failure to form a solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) that can expand the inherently narrow electrochemical window of water (1.23 V) imposed by hydrogen and oxygen evolution. Here, a novel (Li₄ (TEGDME)(H₂ O)₇ ) is proposed as a solvation electrolyte with stable interfacial chemistry. By introducing tetraethylene glycol dimethyl ether (TEGDME) into a concentrated aqueous electrolyte, a new carbonaceous component for both cathode-electrolyte interface and SEI formation is generated. In situ characterizations and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) calculations reveal a bilayer hybrid interface composed of inorganic LiF and organic carbonaceous species reduced from Li⁺ ₂ (TFSI^- ) and Li⁺ ₄ (TEGDME). Consequently, the interfacial films kinetically broaden the electrochemical stability window to 4.2 V, thus realizing a 2.5 V LiMn₂ O₄ -Li₄ Ti₅ O₁₂ full battery with an excellent energy density of 120 W h kg^-1 for 500 cycles. The results provide an in-depth, mechanistic understanding of a potential design of more effective interphases for next-generation aqueous lithium-ion batteries.

Toward Rapid-Charging Sodium-Ion Batteries using Hybrid-Phase Molybdenum Sulfide Selenide-Based Anodes

To attain both high energy density and power density in sodium-ion (Na⁺ ) batteries, the reaction kinetics and structural stability of anodes should be improved by materials optimization. In this work, few-layered molybdenum sulfide selenide (MoSSe) consisting of a mixture of 1T and 2H phases is designed to provide high ionic/electrical conductivities, low Na⁺ diffusion barrier, and stable Na⁺ storage. Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) is used as a conductive matrix to form 3D electron transfer paths. The resulting MoSSe@rGO anode exhibits high capacity and rate performance in both organic and solid-state electrolytes. The ultrafast Na⁺ storage kinetics of the MoSSe@rGO anode is attributed to the surface-dominant reaction process and broad Na⁺ channels. In situ and ex situ measurements are conducted to reveal the Na⁺ storage process in MoSSe@rGO. It is found that the MoS and MoSe bonds effectively limit the dissolution of the active materials. The favorable Na⁺ storage kinetics of the MoSSe@rGO electrode are ascribed to its low adsorption energy of -1.997 eV and low diffusion barrier of 0.087 eV. These results reveal that anion doping of metal sulfides is a feasible strategy to develop sodium-ion batteries with high energy and power densities and long life-span.

Abstract 3702: A lineage-specific lncRNA driven by Foxa1 associated super enhancer promotes tumor growth through interacting YBX1

Lineage-specific expression of genes plays important roles in tumorigenesis. It has been suggested that lncRNAs tend to be more lineage-specifically expressed than protein-coding genes. However, the regulation and role of lineage-specific lncRNAs remains largely unknown. In this study, we reported a lncRNA DSCAM-AS1 that specifically expressed in lung adenocarcinoma and luminal breast cancer. The expression of DSCAM-AS1 was regulated by two super enhancer clusters driven by Foxa1. Foxa1 can directly bind to promoter of DSCAM-AS1. In breast cancer, DSCAM-AS1 was also transcriptionally regulated by ERα, which formed complex with Foxa1. Higher expression of DSCAM-AS1 was associated with poor poor prognosis in both lung adenocarcinoma and luminal breast cancer patients. Silencing or knock-out of DSCAM-AS1 significantly reduce the growth of lung adenocarcinoma and luminal breast cancer cells. We observed silencing or knock-out of DSCAM-AS1 could reduce the expression of Foxa1 in lung adenocarcinoma and breast cancer cells. We also found a significant decrease of ERα expression after silencing or knock-out of DSCAM-AS1 in luminal breast cancer cells. Mechanistically, we found DSCAM-AS1 could interact with YBX1 and enhance recruitment of YBX1 at the promoter region of Foxa1 and ERα. DSCAM-AS1 could form a positive feedback loop with Foxa1 and ERα. Our findings may provide another regulatory loop: Foxa1 and ERα drive expression of super enhancer associated lncRNA DSCAM-AS1 and form a positive feedback loop with it, which play important roles in maintaining cancer cell identity and function.

[Surveillance of Oncomelania hupensis distribution and water levels in Gaoyou sections of the eastern route project of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project following operation of the project]

OBJECTIVE

To understand the distribution of Oncomelania hupensis snails and changes of water levels in Gaoyou sections of the Li Canal following the operation of the eastern route project of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project.

METHODS

The Oncomelania snails were monitored in the river banks and water bodies of Gaoyou sections of the Li Canal by means of systematic sampling combined with environmental sampling as well as collection of the floaters from 2014 to 2019, and the water levels were collected in Gaoyou sections of the Li Canal at the typical hydrological year before the operation of the eastern route project of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project and during the period between 2016 and 2019.

RESULTS

A total area of 235.42 hm² were investigated and a total of 75.8 kg floaters were collected in Gaoyou sections of the Li Canal from 2014 to 2019; however, no snails were found. The water level in Gaoyou sections of the Li Canal was predominantly high in the flood season and low in the dry season before the operation of the eastern route project of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, and the water level was elevated in the dry season and relatively low in the flood season after the operation of the project.

CONCLUSIONS

Following the operation of the eastern route project of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, the original river bank that is characterized by "land in winter and water in summer" has changed in Gaoyou sections of the Li Canal, which is not favorable for snail breeding.

Cationic liposome-triggered luminol chemiluminescence reaction and its applications

Liposomes are spherical phospholipid bilayer vesicles. In the present study, we found that cationic liposomes made by (2,3-dioleoyloxy-propyl)-trimethylammonium (DOTAP) could enhance the luminol-H₂O₂ chemiluminescence (CL) reaction. Mechanism studies showed that the positive charge on the surface of liposomes plays an important role in the CL process. We speculated that the cationic liposomes with quaternary ammonium groups on the surface may be capable of catalyzing the decomposition of H₂O₂ leading to the formation of oxygen-related free radicals including ˙OH, ¹O₂, and O₂˙^-. The luminol anions tend to move close to the surface of the cationic liposomes and then to be oxidized by the oxidizing radical species which may be around the surface of cationic liposomes forming excited-state 3-aminophthalate* (3-APA*). When the 3-APA* returns to the ground state, an enhanced CL is observed. In addition, the single-strand DNA (ssDNA) showed a significant inhibition effect on the proposed CL reaction. The CL intensity decreased linearly with an increasing amount of DNA from 0.05 to 2 pmol. We assumed that the binding of ssDNA with cationic liposomes would neutralize the positive charge on the surface of liposomes and inhibit the catalytic activity of DOTAP cationic liposomes. Based on the ssDNA-inhibited luminol-H₂O₂-cationic liposome CL reaction, simple label-free CL sensing platforms were developed for the detection of sequence-specific DNA related to the hepatitis B virus (HBV) gene and for the detection of ATP (as a model analyte) using an anti-ATP aptamer as the recognition element.

Biodegradable Bacterial Cellulose-Supported Quasi-Solid Electrolyte for Lithium Batteries

The stringent safety and sustainability requirements for electrolytes used in lithium batteries have led to significant research efforts into alternative materials. Here, a quasi-solid electrolyte based on biodegradable bacterial cellulose (BC) was successfully synthesized via a simple ball milling method. The BC provides plenty of sites for the attachment of ionic liquid electrolytes (ILEs) as well as ion transport channels. Moreover, the O-H groups contained in the BC molecular chains interact with anions in ILEs to form hydrogen bonds, which promotes the dissociation of the lithium salts. The prepared electrolytes (BC-ILEs) have good thermal stability with a decomposition temperature exceeding 300 °C and high ionic conductivities. The Li/BC-ILE/LiFePO₄ battery exhibits remarkable electrochemical performance. More importantly, the results of the Fehling test verify that the electrolyte can be degraded by cellulase. The quasi-solid electrolyte broadens the range of electrolytes for lithium batteries and provides new avenues to explore safe and eco-friendly materials.
