South and Southeast Asia controls black carbon characteristics of Meili Snow Mountains in southeast Tibetan Plateau

South and Southeast Asia (SSA) emitted black carbon (BC) exerts potential effects on glacier and snow melting and regional climate change in the Tibetan Plateau. In this study, online BC measurements were conducted for 1 year at a remote village located at the terminus of the Mingyong Glacier below the Meili Snow Mountains. The Weather Research and Forecasting model coupled with Chemistry (WRF-Chem) was used to investigate the contribution and potential effect of SSA-emitted BC. In addition, variations in the light absorption characteristics of BC and brown carbon (BrC) were examined. The results indicated that the annual mean concentration of BC was 415 ± 372 ngm-3, with the highest concentration observed in April (monthly mean: 930 ± 484 ngm-3). BC exhibited a similar diurnal variation throughout the year, with two peaks observed in the morning (from 8:00 to 9:00 AM) and in the afternoon (from 4:00 to 5:00 PM), with even lower values at nighttime. At a short wavelength of 370 nm, the absorption coefficient (babs) reached its maximum value, and the majority of babs values were < 20 Mm-1, indicating that the atmosphere was not overloaded with BC. At the same wavelength, BrC substantially contributed to babs, with an annual mean of 25.2 % ± 12.8 %. SSA was the largest contributor of BC (annual mean: 51.1 %) in the study area, particularly in spring (65.6 %). However, its contributions reached 20.2 % in summer, indicating non-negligible emissions from activities in other regions. In the atmosphere, the SSA BC-induced radiative forcing (RF) over the study region was positive. While at the near surface, the RF exhibited a significant seasonal variation, with the larger RF values occurring in winter and spring. Overall, our findings highlight the importance of controlling BC emissions from SSA to protect the Tibetan Plateau against pollution-related glacier and snow cover melting.

Back-trajectory analyses for evaluating the transboundary transport effect to the aerosol pollution in South Korea

This study performed a back-trajectory analysis to determine the influence of transboundary transport on the extent of aerosol pollution in South Korea, based on 5-year PM2.5 measurements (2015-2019) in five cities covering South Korea. A transboundary transport case was selected if a back trajectory passed over a dedicated region (BOX 1 and BOX 2) in the Yellow Sea. First, we found that the frequency of transboundary transport largely increases in the high pollution case, and this pattern is almost consistent for all months and all five cities, indicating the importance of investigating the horizontal direction of air mass movement associated with PM2.5, which has been discussed extensively in previous studies. In this study, we also examined the altitude change and straight moving distance (defined as travel distance) of back trajectories regarding the extent of local PM2.5. Consequently, we found that back trajectories in high aerosol pollution showed much lower altitudes and shorter travel differences, implying a significant contribution of surface emissions and stagnant air conditions to severe aerosol pollution. As a result, the local PM2.5 level was not significantly enhanced when the air mass passed over the Yellow Sea if transboundary transport occurred at high altitudes with rapid movement (i.e., high altitude and long travel distance back-trajectory). Based on these results, we suggest utilizing the combined information of the horizontal direction, altitude variation, and length of back trajectories to better evaluate transboundary transport.

Airborne 210Pb, Si, Zn and Pb as tracers for atmospheric pollution in Helsinki metropolitan area

This study analyzed 16070 daily and 608 weekly air filter samples from the Helsinki metropolitan area collected between 1962 and 2005. The aim was to use the Potential Source Contribution Function (PSCF) to determine potential sources of silicon (Si), zinc (Zn), lead (Pb), and radioactive isotope 210Pb. The main sources for Si and Pb were industrial activities, particularly mining, metal industry, and traffic. Common source areas for Zn and 210Pb were identified in the eastern and southeastern parts of the measuring site.

Transport and deposition of radionuclides from northern Africa to the southern Iberian Peninsula and the Canary Islands during the intense dust intrusions of March 2022

The present study focuses on the two consecutive and markedly intense Saharan dust intrusion episodes that greatly affected southern Spain (Málaga) and, to a lesser extent, the Canary Islands (Tenerife), in March 2022. These two episodes were the result of atypical meteorological conditions in the region and resulted in record levels of aerosols in the air at the Málaga location. The activity levels of various natural and artificial radionuclides (7Be, 210Pb, 40K, 137Cs, 239Pu, 240Pu, 239+240Pu) and radioactive indicators (gross alpha and gross beta) were impacted by these events and the results are described herein. These episodes caused, for example, the activities of 137Cs in aerosol samples at the Málaga monitoring station to reach the highest concentrations ever recorded since high-volume aerosol monitoring started at this site in 2009. A link between the activity levels of 137Cs, 40K and gross alpha in the atmospheric aerosols and daily PM10 concentrations during the episodes is also reported. In addition, isotopic ratios are discussed in the context of the source and destination of the various anthropogenic radionuclides measured. The atmospheric residence time of aerosols during these episodes is also evaluated because it concerns how intrusions to the Canary Islands should be analysed. Finally, for the first time, the concentrations of 137Cs deposition by rainwater during a Saharan dust intrusion are reported and the deposition rate of these radionuclides during these episodes is discussed.

Fate of organophosphate esters from the Northwestern Pacific to the Southern Ocean: Occurrence, distribution, and fugacity model simulation

Eleven organophosphate esters (OPEs) in the air and seawater were investigated from the northwestern Pacific Ocean to the Southern Ocean during the 2018 Chinese 34th Antarctic Scientific Expedition. The concentration of total OPEs ranged from 164.82 to 3501.79 pg/m3 in air and from 4.54 to 70.09 ng/L in seawater. Two halogenated OPEs, tri(chloropropyl) phosphate (TCPP) and tri (2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP), were generally more abundant than the non-halogenated OPEs. A level III fugacity model was developed to simulate the transfer and fate of seven OPEs in the air and seawater regions of the central Ross Sea. The model results indicate that OPEs are transferred from the air to the seawater in the central Ross Sea in summer, during which the Ross Sea acts as a final OPE sink. Dry and wet deposition dominated the processes involving OPE transfer to seawater. The OPE degradation process was also found to be more pervasive in the atmosphere than in the seawater region. These findings highlights the importance of long-range transport of OPEs and their air-seawater interface behavior in the Antarctic.

Dual carbon isotope-based brown carbon aerosol characteristics at a high-altitude site in the northeastern Himalayas: Role of biomass burning

PM2.5 samples (n = 34) were collected from January to April 2017 over Shillong (25.7°N, 91.9°E; 1064 m amsl), a high-altitude site situated in the northeastern Himalaya. The main aim was to understand the sources, characteristics, and optical properties of local vs long-range transported carbonaceous aerosols (CA) using chemical species and dual carbon isotopes (13C and 14C). Percentage biomass burning (BB)/biogenic fraction (fbio, calculated from 14C) varied from 67 to 92 % (78 ± 7) and correlated well with primary BB tracers like f60, and K+, suggesting BB as a considerable source. Rain events are shown to reduce the fbio fraction, indicating majority of BB-derived CA are transported. Further, δ13C (-26.6 ± 0.4) variability was very low over Shillong, suggesting it's limitations in source apportionment over the study region, if used alone. Average ratio of absorption coefficient of methanol-soluble BrC (BrCMS) to water-soluble BrC (BrCWS) at 365 nm was 1.8, indicating a significant part of BrC was water-insoluble. A good positive correlation between fbio and mass absorption efficiency of BrCWS and BrCMS at 365 nm with the higher slope for BrCMS suggests BB derived water-insoluble BrC was more absorbing. Relative radiative forcing (RRF, 300 to 2500 nm) of BrCWS and BrCMS with respect to EC were 11 ± 5 % and 23 ± 16 %, respectively. Further, the RRF of BrCMS was up to 60 %, and that of BrCWS was up to 22 % with respect to EC for the samples with fbio ≥ 0.85 (i.e., dominated by BB), reflecting the importance of BB in BrC RRF estimation.

Air quality and characterization of synoptic circulation weather patterns in a South American city from Argentina

The potential cause-effect relationship between synoptic meteorological conditions and levels of criteria air pollutants, including CO, NO2, O3, PM10, PM2.5 and SO2, in Bahia Blanca, Argentina, was assessed for the period of 2018-2019. Daily back-trajectories and global meteorological data fields were employed to characterize the primary transport paths of air masses reaching the study site, and to identify the synoptic meteorological patterns responsible for these atmospheric circulations. Time series of surface-level meteorological parameters and midday mixing layer height were collected to examine the impact of the synoptic meteorological patterns on local meteorology. Furthermore, the NAAPS global aerosol model was utilized to identify days when contributions from long-range transport processes, such as dust and/or biomass burning smoke, impacted air quality. By applying this methodology, it was determined that the air masses coming from the N, NW and W regions significantly contributed to increased mean concentrations of coarse particles in this area through long-range transport events involving dust and smoke. Indeed, the high average levels of PM10 recorded in 2018-2019 (annual mean values of 47 and 52 μg/m3, respectively) represent the main air quality concern in Bahía Blanca. Moreover, PM10, PM2.5 and NO2 emissions should be reduced in order to meet recommended air quality guidelines. On the other hand, the results from this study suggest that the sources and meteorological processes leading to the increase in the concentrations of CO and SO2 have a local-regional origin, although these air pollutants did not reach high values probably as a consequence of the strong wind speed registered in this region during any synoptic meteorological pattern.

Seasonal variation of mercury in cloud water at a mountaintop in subtropical Hong Kong: Influences of transboundary transport and sea-salt aerosol

Understanding the distribution and controlling factors of mercury (Hg) speciation in cloud water is crucial for predicting the fate of atmospheric Hg and assessing the environmental impacts of Hg in cloud water. In this study, we collected 85 cloud water samples during autumn and spring at a mountaintop (957 m a.s.l.) in Hong Kong, China. The concentrations of total Hg (THg) in cloud water varied from 3.6 to 225.3 ng L-1, with volume-weighted mean values of 32.1 ng L-1 in autumn and 24.4 ng L-1 in spring. Due to the strong acidic condition of the cloud water, dissolved Hg (DHg) contributed to two-thirds of THg, with Hg complexes by dissolved organic matter (DOM) and chloride being the predominant species of DHg according to chemical equilibrium modeling simulations. Moreover, the levels of Hg-DOM were significantly higher in autumn cloud water compared to spring, and the latter contained more Hg(II)-halide complexes. These differences could be attributed to the different air mass pathways and their emission sources. By combining backward trajectories and Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) models, we found that air masses originating from the inland Pearl River Delta region, which were only present in autumn cloud water and strongly influenced by stationary coal combustion, were responsible for the highest concentrations of THg, DHg, particulate Hg (PHg) and Hg-DOM. Additionally, air masses originating from regions in China-Indochina Peninsula were only found in spring samples and were significantly influenced by stationary coal combustion, industrial and biogenic sources, contributing to elevated proportions of methylmercury (MeHg) and PHg. In contrast, marine air masses mainly from the western Pacific Ocean contributed to high levels of Hg(II)-halide complexes, especially in spring cloud water. The dissolution and conversion of Hg from sea salt aerosols played a significant role in the enhanced DHg levels observed during cloud processing.

Development of surface observation-based two-step emissions adjustment and its application on CO, NOx, and SO2 emissions in China and South Korea

It is challenging to estimate local emission conditions of a downwind area solely based on concentrations in the downwind area. This is because air pollutants that have a long residence time in the atmosphere can be transported over long distances and influence air quality in downwind areas. In this study, a Two-step Emissions Adjustment (TEA) approach was developed to adjust downwind emissions of target air pollutants with surface observations, considering their long-range transported emission impacts from upwind areas calculated from air quality simulations. Using the TEA approach, CO, NOx, and SO2 emissions were adjusted in China and South Korea between 2016 and 2021 based on existing bottom-up emissions inventories. Simulations with the adjusted emissions showed that the 6-year average normalized mean biases of the monthly mean concentrations of CO, NOx, and SO2 improved to 0.3 %, -2 %, and 2 %, respectively, in China, and to 5 %, 7 %, and 4 %, respectively, in South Korea. When analyzing the emission trends, it was estimated that the annual emissions of CO, NOx, and SO2 in China decreased at a rate of 7.2 %, 4.5 %, and 10.6 % per year, respectively. The decrease rate of emissions for each of these pollutants was similar to that of ambient concentrations. When considering upwind emission impacts in the emissions adjustment, CO emissions increased by 1.3 %/year in South Korea, despite CO concentrations in the country decreasing during the study period. During the study period, NOx and SO2 emissions in South Korea decreased by 3.9 % and 0.5 %/year, respectively. Moreover, the TEA approach can account for drastic short-term emission changes (e.g., social distancing due to COVID-19). Therefore, the TEA approach can be used to adjust emissions and improve reproducibility of concentrations of air pollutants suitable for health studies for areas where upwind emission impacts are significant.

Comparison of inorganic nitrogen concentrations in airborne particles at inshore and offshore sites in the Yellow Sea (2017-2019): Long-range transport and potential impact on marine productivity

Atmospheric deposition of nitrogen is one of the most important external nutrient sources. We investigated the concentrations of NO3- and NH4+ in airborne particles at both an offshore and an inshore site in the Yellow Sea. At the offshore site, devoid of local sources and located downwind from the highly developed areas of Korea and China, the concentrations of atmospheric particulate NO3- and NH4+ were ∼88 ± 101 nmol m-3 and ∼102 ± 102 nmol m-3, respectively, likely due to the transboundary long-range transport of pollutants. The inshore site showed a concentration ∼2 times higher than the offshore site. Considering not only dry inorganic nitrogen deposition but also wet and organic material deposition, the total atmospheric nitrogen deposition was estimated to contribute roughly 10 % to the new production in the Yellow Sea.

Air pollution analysis in Northwestern South America: A new Lagrangian framework

This study examines the spatiotemporal variations of PM2.5, PM10, SO2, O3, NO, and NO2 concentrations in Northwestern South America (NWSA). We assess the efficacy of existing policies, identify underlying phenomena, and highlight areas for further research. Significant findings have emerged by analyzing reanalysis and in-situ data, employing the WRF-Chem model, and utilizing a new Lagrangian framework designed to overcome some drawbacks common to analysis of pollution Long-Range Transport. Wildfires in the first half of the year and volcanic activity (for SO2) in July-August contribute to over 90 % of the pollutant's advection, leading to high pollution levels in urban areas. SO2 volcanic emissions contribute to secondary PM, explaining the peak in PM concentrations in Cali in July. In the second half of the year, pollutant behavior varies based on factors such as city characteristics, vehicular-volume, air temperature, wind speed, and boundary layer height, and O3 is influenced by solar radiation and the NO/NO2 ratio. Diurnal variations of PM and NOx correlate with vehicular density, SO2 with industrial activity, and O3 depends on solar radiation. Trend analysis reveals decreasing PM10 levels except in three Cundinamarca cities and Cali suggesting the need to implement/evaluate control plans in those locations. Although data is limited, NO and NO2 levels show an increasing trend due to the rising number of vehicles. SO2 levels are decreasing, except in Cali, potentially influenced by the nearby industrial and polluted city of Yumbo. O3 displays a downward trend in most cities, except Bogotá, due to the NO/NO2 ratio favoring O3 increase. These findings provide a starting point for further research to deepen our understanding of NWSA air pollution. Such investigations are essential before modifying existing policies or enacting new ones. Collaborative efforts at the international, regional, and inter-city levels are crucial for effective air quality management.

Characteristics of atmospheric black carbon and its wet scavenging in Nanning, South China

Based on in-situ measurement of black carbon (BC) and carbon monoxide (CO), the characteristics of BC emissions and wet scavenging were comprehensively investigated in Nanning, South China. The average annual BC concentration was 1.02 ± 0.53 μg m-3 with higher pollution levels during winter. In winter, a higher net BC/CO (ΔBC/ΔCO) ratio of 3.3 ± 0.3 ng m-3 ppb-1 along with an increased absorption Ångström exponent (AAE) and BC mass from biomass burning (BCbb), indicated a significant contribution of biomass burning to BC emissions. However, emissions from the traffic sector consistently exerted a dominant influence throughout the year. Cluster analysis of backward trajectories identified three types of air masses with distinct origins. Cluster #1 originated from Guangxi province and its vicinity, intermittently influencing the sampling site throughout the year with varying effects between winter and summer. This air mass brought in clean sea breeze in summer whereas transported a higher proportion of BCbb to the site during wintertime due to local open biomass burning. Cluster #3 primarily arrived in autumn and winter (October-December) from polluted central China, resulting in substantially high BC mass at the site. Cluster #2 coincided with the period (January-March) when extensive surface open biomass burning events occurred in Southeast Asia (SEA) regions. These BC aerosols in cluster#2 initially rose to higher altitudes above SEA before being regionally transported, but were significantly scavenged by clouds and precipitation during vertical uplift. The remaining BC exhibited a notably lower BC loss rate on relative humidity (RH) of -0.01 ng m-3 ppb-1 %-1 compared to cluster #1 (-0.03) and cluster #3 (-0.06), corresponding to an average BC transport efficiency of 0.85, 0.73, and 0.53, respectively. Nonetheless, air masses in cluster #2 could still transport considerably high BC mass to Nanning due to dry conditions and less wet scavenging along trajectory pathways. These findings provide valuable insights for policymakers and government officials in regulating and mitigating BC pollution in South China.

Spatio-temporal evolution of long-range transported mineral desert dust properties over rural and urban sites in Central Europe

An exceptionally strong and very fast (120h) mineral dust inflow from North Africa to Poland was predicted by NMMB/BSC-Dust and NAAPS models on 10-11 June 2019. Simultaneous measurements with two complex lidar systems at the EARLINET-ACTRIS urban site in Warsaw (Central Poland) and the PolWET peatland site in Rzecin (Western Poland) captured the evolution of this dust event. The advected air masses had different source areas in North Africa, they were reaching each station via independent pathways, and thus, were unlikely mixed with each other. The excellent capabilities of the next generation PollyXT lidar and the mobile EMORAL lidar allowed for the derivation of full datasets of aerosol optical properties profiles that enabled comparative study of the advected dust properties evolution. Within a mere 350 km distance between Warsaw and Rzecin, distinctly different dust properties were measured, respectively: dry mineral dust composed mainly of coarse mode dust particles (50 ± 5 % of the total particle backscattering profile) versus the wet mineral dust dominated by fine dust particles (58 ± 4 %). A new parameter fine-to-coarse dust ratio (FCDR) is proposed to describe more intuitively mineral dust composition.

Can water dating trace the transport history of HCHs in the ocean?

Long-range atmospheric and oceanic transport play a crucial role in the accumulation of persistent organic pollutants (POPs), including hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs), in the Arctic Ocean. Herein, transient tracers, specifically chlorofluorocarbon-12 and sulfur hexafluoride, were used to determine the ventilation time of HCHs. Results revealed that dissolved HCHs can penetrate to a depth of ~500 m in the western Arctic Ocean, corresponding to water masses with a mean age of 45 ± 14 years. The average long-range transport time for α-HCH from initial atmospheric release to entering the western Arctic Ocean was estimated to be >30 ± 5 years, indicating continued moderate to high ecological risks from HCHs in the Arctic. This study demonstrates that transient tracers serve as effective water dating tools to elucidate the transport history of stable POPs in the ocean, contributing to a better understanding of their environmental characteristics and fate.

Inputs, amplification and sinks of perfluoroalkyl substances at coastal Antarctica

The sources, biogeochemical controls and sinks of perfluoroalkyl substances, such as perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs), in polar coastal regions are largely unknown. These were evaluated by measuring a large multi-compartment dataset of PFAAs concentrations at coastal Livingston and Deception Islands (maritime Antarctica) during three austral summers. PFAAs were abundant in atmospheric-derived samples (aerosols, rain, snow), consistent with the importance of atmospheric deposition as an input of PFAAs to Antarctica. Such PFAAs deposition was unequivocally demonstrated by the occurrence of PFAAs in small Antarctic lakes. Several lines of evidence supported the relevant amplification of PFAAs concentrations in surface waters driven by snow scavenging of sea-spray aerosol-bound PFAAs followed by snow-melting. For example, vertical profiles showed higher PFAAs concentrations at lower-salinity surface seawaters, and PFAAs concentrations in snow were significantly higher than in seawater. The higher levels of PFAAs at Deception Island than at Livingston Island are consistent with the semi-enclosed nature of the bay. Concentrations of PFOS decreased from 2014 to 2018, consistent with observations in other oceans. The sink of PFAAs due to the biological pump, transfer to the food web, and losses due to sea-spray aerosols alone are unlikely to have driven the decrease in PFOS concentrations. An exploratory assessment of the potential sinks of PFAAs suggests that microbial degradation of perfluoroalkyl sulfonates should be a research priority for the evaluation of PFAAs persistence in the coming decade.

Temporal variability, meteorological influences, and long-range transport of atmospheric aerosols over two contrasting environments Agartala and Patiala in India

The present study focused on the temporal variability, meteorological influences, potential sources, and long-range transport of atmospheric aerosols over two contrasting environments during 2011-2013. We have chosen Agartala (AGR) city in Northeast India as one of our sites representing the rural-continental environment and Patiala (PTA) as an urban site in Northwest India. The seasonal averaged equivalent black carbon (eBC) concentration in AGR ranges from 1.55 to 38.11 µg/m3 with an average value of 9.87 ± 8.17 µg/m3, whereas, at an urban location, PTA value ranges from 1.30 to 15.57 µg/m3 with an average value of 7.83 ± 3.51 µg/m3. The annual average eBC concentration over AGR was observed to be ~ 3 times higher than PTA. Two diurnal peaks (morning and evening) in eBC have been observed at both sites but were observed to be more prominent at AGR than at PTA. Spectral aerosol optical depth (AOD) has been observed to be in the range from 0.33 ± 0.09 (post-monsoon) to 0.85 ± 0.22 (winter) at AGR and 0.47 ± 0.04 (pre-monsoon) to 0.74 ± 0.09 (post-monsoon) at PTA. The concentration of eBC and its diurnal and seasonal variation indicates the primary sources of eBC as local sources, synoptic meteorology, planetary boundary layer (PBL) dynamics, and distant transportation of aerosols. The wintertime higher values of eBC at AGR than at PTA are linked with the transportation of eBC from the Indo-Gangetic Plain (IGP). Furthermore, it is evident that eBC aerosols are transported from local and regional sources, which is supported by concentration-weighted trajectory (CWT) analysis results.

A multifaceted approach to explain short- and long-term PM2.5 concentration changes in Northeast Asia in the month of January during 2016-2021

Changes in PM_2.5 concentrations are influenced by interwoven impacts of key drivers (e.g., meteorology, local emissions, and regional emissions). However, it is challenging to quantitatively disentangle their impacts individually at once. Therefore, we introduced a multifaceted approach (i.e., meteorology vs. emissions and self-contribution vs. long-range transport) to analyze the effects of major drivers for long- and short-term PM_2.5 concentration changes based on observation and simulation in the month of January during 2016-2021 in Northeast Asia. For the simulations, we conducted modeling with the WRF-CMAQ system. The observed PM_2.5 concentrations in China and South Korea in January 2021 decreased by 13.7 and 9.8 μg/m³, respectively, compared to those in January 2016. Emission change was the dominant factor to reduce PM_2.5 concentrations in China (-115%) and South Korea (-74%) for the 6 years. However, the short-term changes in PM_2.5 concentrations between January of 2020-2021 were mainly driven by meteorological conditions in China (-73%) and South Korea (-68%). At the same time, in South Korea located in downwind area, the impact of long-range transport from upwind area (LTI) decreased by 55% (9.6 μg/m³) over the 6 years whereas the impact of local emissions increased (+2.9 μg/m³/year) during 2016-2019 but decreased (-4.5 μg/m³/year) during 2019-2021. Additionally, PM_2.5 concentrations in the upwind area showed a positive relationship with LTIs. However, for the days when westerly winds became weak in the downwind area, high PM_2.5 concentrations in upwind area did not lead to high LTIs. These results imply that the decline of PM_2.5 concentrations in South Korea was significantly affected by a combination of emission reduction in upwind area and meteorological conditions that hinder long-range transport. The proposed multifaceted approach can identify the main drivers of PM_2.5 concentration change in a region by considering the regional characteristics.

Heavy metal pollution in Mongolian-Manchurian grassland soil and effect of long-range dust transport by wind

Grasslands provide a range of valuable ecosystem services, but they are also particularly fragile ecosystems easily threatened by human activities, such as long-term open-pit mining and related industrial activities. In grassland area, dust containing heavy metal(loid)s generated by mines may further migrate to remote places, but few studies have focused on the long-range transport of contaminants as an important pollution source. In the present study, one of the largest and most intact grassland ecosystems, the Mongolian-Manchurian steppe, was selected to investigate its pollution status and track potential sources. A total of 150 soil samples were collected to explore reginal distribution of nine heavy metal(loid)s that has potential risk in grassland. We conducted a combined multi-variant analysis of positive matrix factorization (PMF) and machine learning, which foregrounded the source of long-range transport of contaminants and inspired the hypothesis of a novel stochastic model to describe contaminants distribution. Results showed four different sources accounting for 44.44% (parent material), 20.28% (atmospheric deposition), 20.39% (farming), and 14.89% (transportation) of the total concentration, respectively. Factor 2 indicated that coal surface mining lead to a significant enrichment of As and Se with their concentration far above the global average level, which was different from other reported grassland areas. Machine learning results further confirmed that atmospheric and topographic features were their contamination controlling factors. The model results proposed that As, Se and Cu released by surface mining will be transported over long distance under prevailing monsoon, until finally deposited in the windward slope of mountain due to terrain obstruction. The long-range transport by wind and deposition of contaminants may be a prevailing phenomenon in temperate grassland, making it a pollution source that cannot be ignored. Evidence from this study reveals the urgency of precautions for fragile grassland ecosystems around industrial areas and provides a basis for its management and risk control policies.

The influence of COVID-19 pandemic on PM2.5 air quality in Northern Taiwan from Q1 2020 to Q2 2021

The study aimed to investigate the PM_2.5 variations in different periods of COVID-19 control measures in Northern Taiwan from Quarter 1 (Q1) 2020 to Quarter 2 (Q2) 2021. PM_2.5 sources were classified based on long-range transport (LRT) or local pollution (LP) in three study periods: one China lockdown (P1), and two restrictions in Taiwan (P2 and P3). During P1 the average PM_2.5 concentrations from LRT (LRT-PM_2.5-P1) were higher at Fuguei background station by 27.9% and in the range of 4.9-24.3% at other inland stations compared to before P1. The PM_2.5 from LRT/LP mix or pure LP (Mix/LP-PM_2.5-P1) was also higher by 14.2-39.9%. This increase was due to higher secondary particle formation represented by the increase in secondary ions (SI) and organic matter in PM_2.5-P1 with the largest proportion of 42.17% in PM_2.5 from positive matrix factorization (PMF) analysis. A similar increasing trend of Mix/LP-PM_2.5 was found in P2 when China was still locked down and Taiwan was under an early control period but the rapidly increasing infected cases were confirmed. The shift of transportation patterns from public to private to avoid virus infection explicated the high correlation of the increasing infected cases with the increasing PM_2.5. In contrast, the decreasing trend of LP-PM_2.5-P3 was observed in P3 with the PM_2.5 biases of ∼45% at all the stations when China was not locked down but Taiwan implemented a semi-lockdown. The contribution of gasoline vehicle sources in PM_2.5 was reduced from 20.3% before P3 to 10% in P3 by chemical signatures and source identification using PMF implying the strong impact of strict control measures on vehicle emissions. In summary, PM_2.5 concentrations in Northern Taiwan were either increased (P1 and P2) or decreased (P3) during the COVID-19 pandemic depending on control measures, source patterns and meteorological conditions.

Levels and distribution profiles of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) in a high Arctic Svalbard ice core

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of persistent organic contaminants of which some are toxic and bioaccumulative. Several PFAS can be formed from the atmospheric degradation of precursors such as fluorotelomer alcohols (FTOHs) as well as hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HFCs) and other ozone-depleting chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) replacement compounds. Svalbard ice cores have been shown to provide a valuable record of long-range atmospheric transport of contaminants to the Arctic. This study uses a 12.3 m ice core from the remote Lomonosovfonna ice cap on Svalbard to understand the atmospheric deposition of PFAS in the Arctic. A total of 45 PFAS were targeted, of which 26 were detected, using supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) and ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) MS/MS. C₂ to C₁₁ perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs) were detected continuously in the ice core and their fluxes ranged from 2.5 to 8200 ng m^-2 yr^-1 (9.51-16,500 pg L^-1). Trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) represented 71 % of the total mass of C₂ - C₁₁ PFCAs in the ice core and had increasing temporal trends in deposition. The distribution profile of PFCAs suggested that FTOHs were likely the atmospheric precursor to C₈ - C₁₁ PFCAs, whereas C₂ - C₆ PFCAs had alternative sources, such as HFCs and other CFC replacement compounds. Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) was also widely detected in 82 % of ice core subsections, and its isomer profile (81 % linear) indicated an electrochemical fluorination manufacturing source. Comparisons of PFAS concentrations with a marine aerosol proxy showed that marine aerosols were insignificant for the deposition of PFAS on Lomonosovfonna. Comparisons with a melt proxy showed that TFA and PFOS were mobile during meltwater percolation. This indicates that seasonal snowmelt and runoff from post-industrial accumulation on glaciers could be a significant seasonal source of PFAS to ecosystems in Arctic fjords.

Concentration and size distribution of atmospheric particles in southern Italy during COVID-19 lockdown period

Many countries imposed lockdown (LD) to limit the spread of COVID-19, which led to a reduction in the emission of anthropogenic atmospheric pollutants. Several studies have investigated the effects of LD on air quality, mostly in urban settings and criteria pollutants. However, less information is available on background sites, and virtually no information is available on particle number size distribution (PNSD). This study investigated the effect of LD on air quality at an urban background site representing a near coast area in the central Mediterranean. The analysis focused on equivalent black carbon (eBC), particle mass concentrations in different size fractions: PM_2.5 (aerodynamic diameter D_a < 2.5 μm), PM₁₀ (D_a < 10 μm), PM_10-2.5 (2.5 < D_a < 10 μm); and PNSD in a wide range of diameters (0.01-10 μm). Measurements in 2020 during the national LD in Italy and period immediately after LD (POST-LD period) were compared with those in the corresponding periods from 2015 to 2019. The results showed that LD reduced the frequency and intensity of high-pollution events. Reductions were more relevant during POST-LD than during LD period for all variables, except quasi-ultrafine particles and PM_10-2.5. Two events of long-range transport of dust were observed, which need to be identified and removed to determine the effect of LD. The decreases in the quasi-ultrafine particles and eBC concentrations were 20%, and 15-22%, respectively. PM_2.5 concentration was reduced by 13-44% whereas PM_10-2.5 concentration was unaffected. The concentration of accumulation mode particles followed the behaviour of PM_2.5, with reductions of 19-57%. The results obtained could be relevant for future strategies aimed at improving air quality and understanding the processes that influence the number and mass particle size distributions.

Variability of ambient black carbon concentration in the Central Himalaya and its assessment over the Hindu Kush Himalayan region

During 2015-2018, eight black carbon (BC) monitoring sites were established in Nepal and Bhutan to fill a significant data gap regarding BC measurement in Central Himalaya. This manuscript analyzes and presents data from these eight stations and one additional station on the Tibetan plateau (TP). Complex topography, varied emission sources, and atmospheric transport pathways significantly impacted the BC concentrations across these stations, with annual mean concentrations varying from 36 ng m^-3 to 45,737 ng m^-3. Higher annual mean concentrations (5609 ± 4515 ng m^-3) were recorded at low-altitude sites than in other locations, with seasonal concentrations highest in the winter (7316 ± 2541 ng m^-3). In contrast, the annual mean concentrations were lowest at high-altitude sites (376 ± 448 ng m^-3); the BC concentrations at these sites peaked during the pre-monsoon season (930 ± 685 ng m^-3). Potential source contributions to the total observed BC were analyzed using the absorption angstrom exponent (AAE). AAE analysis showed the dominance of biomass burning sources (>50 %), except in Kathmandu. By combining our data with previously published literature, we put our measurements in perspective by presenting a comprehensive assessment of BC concentrations and their variability over the Hindu Kush Himalayan (HKH) region. The BC levels in all three geographic regions, high, mid, and low altitude significantly influenced by the persistent seasonal meteorology. However, the mid-altitude stations were substantially affected by valley dynamics and urbanization. The low-altitude stations experienced high BC concentrations during the winter and post-monsoon seasons. Concentration weighted trajectory (CWT) and frequency analyses revealed the dominance of long-range transported pollution during winter over HKH, from west to east. South Asian sources remained significant during the monsoon season. During pre- and post-monsoon, the local, regional, and long-distance pollution varied depending on the location of the receptor site.

Gaseous elemental mercury and its evasion fluxes in the marine boundary layer of the marginal seas of the northwestern Pacific: Results from two cruises in September-December 2019

There are many questions regarding the behavior of mercury in the sea-atmosphere system of the northwestern Pacific. Continuous underway measurements of atmospheric gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) and measurements of sea-air GEM evasion fluxes were carried out in the marginal seas of northwestern Pacific from the South China Sea to the Sea of Okhotsk in fall-winter 2019. The median GEM concentration (1.1 ng/m³) was lower than both the background value and the averages previously observed in these areas. A latitudinal gradient of atmospheric GEM and GEM evasion fluxes with maximum values at southern latitudes was found. The following areas have been identified as potential source areas: the Kurill area of the Pacific Ocean Northeast China, Korean Peninsula, and the territory from the southwest coast of the Yellow Sea to the south of Indochina. Seasonal variations were observed in the Sea of Japan and East China Sea with higher GEM concentrations in winter than in fall. Our data and analysis of published data showed significant relationships between GEM evasion fluxes, latitude and sea surface temperature (SST). It seems that on a global scale, along with the GEM gradient between water and atmosphere, SST is the most significant parameter for sea-air GEM evasion fluxes.

Inter-comparison of chemical fingerprint and source apportionment of marine fine particles at two islands through the west and east passages of the Taiwan Island

In this study, the concentrations of marine fine particles (PM_2.5) and their chemical fingerprints were inter-compared at two islands located aside from the west and east waters of Taiwan Island and the variability of west and east passages (i.e., Routes A1 and A2) were explored. Marine PM_2.5 was simultaneously sampled at the Green and Dongsha Islands and five chemical components (i.e., water-soluble ions, metallic elements, carbonaceous content, anhydrosugars, and organic acids) were further analyzed in PM_2.5 to characterize their chemical fingerprints. The highest concentrations of chemical composition and PM_2.5 were commonly observed during the Asian Northeastern Monsoons (ANMs) via long-range transport (LRT). Water-soluble ions (WSIs) were dominated by secondary inorganic aerosols (SIAs), and followed by oceanic spray. The major metallic content of PM_2.5 was crustal elements, while trace metals originated from anthropogenic sources with an enrichment factor (EF) > 10. In terms of carbonaceous content in PM_2.5, organic carbon (OC) was superior to elemental carbon (EC). High levoglucosan concentrations were also observed during the periods of ANMs. Secondary organic aerosols (SOAs) were formed by atmospheric chemical reactions during the LRT procedure. The PM_2.5 concentration of Route A1 was 37.51 % higher than that of Route A2, and trace metals (V, Mn, Ni, Pb, Cr, and Cu) increased significantly by 96.16-325.83 %. Positive matrix factorization (PMF) results revealed that the dominant factor of PM_2.5 for Route A1 was shipping emissions and vehicular exhausts (41.2 %), while that for Route A2 was oceanic spray (30.2 %). Route A1 was mainly attributed to highly industrialized regions, densely populated urbanized areas, and ship-intensive traffics in East Asia.

Measurement of the mixing state of PAHs in individual particles and its effect on PAH transport in urban and remote areas and from major sources

Although recent laboratory simulations have demonstrated that organic matter prevents the degradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), their role in the long-range transport of PAHs in the real atmosphere remains poorly understood. In this study, we measured the chemical composition and mixing state of PAHs-containing individual particles in aerosols from three sources, one urban area and one remote area. PAHs-containing particles were classified into five types: organic carbon (OC), potassium mixed with organic carbon (KOC), potassium mixed with sodium (KNa), Krich and PAH-rich. The PAH-rich and KOC particles were the main types of particles produced by vehicle exhaust/coal burning and biomass burning, respectively, accounting for >50% of the PAHs-containing particles. It was found that organic matter enhancement of PAHs-containing particles occurs in the ambient atmosphere, with organic-rich (OC and KOC) particles accounting for >90%. Further analysis revealed that the increase in the fractions of PAHs was related to the mixing state with organic compounds due to the protection of organics against PAHs and/or the aging of PAHs-containing particles. The results of this study improve our understanding of the chemical composition and mixing state of PAHs particles in atmospheric aerosols from emission sources and urban and remote areas, and provide field observation evidence to support the promotion of the study of long-range transport of PAHs by organics.

Long-range transport of airborne bacteria over East Asia: Asian dust events carry potentially nontuberculous Mycobacterium populations

The nontuberculous mycobacterial pulmonary disease (NTM-PD) caused by Mycobacterium species has increased in prevalence all over the world. The distributions of NTM-PD are possibly determined by the westerly wind traveling at high altitudes over East Asia. However, the long-range transport of Mycobacterium species has not been demonstrated by analyzing the bacterial communities in aerosols such as desert mineral particles and anthropogenic pollutants transported by the westerly wind. Here, airborne bacterial compositions were investigated including Mycobacterium species in high-elevation aerosols, which were captured in the snow cover at 2,450 m altitude on Mt. Tateyama. This was further compared to the ground-level or high-altitude aerosols collected at six sampling sites distributed from Asian-dust source region (Tsogt-Ovoo) to downwind areas in East Asia (Asian continental cities; Erenhot, Beijing, Yongin, Japanese cities; Yonago, Suzu, Noto Peninsula). The cell concentrations and taxonomic diversities of airborne bacteria decreased from the Asian continent to the Japan area. Terrestrial bacterial populations belonging to Firmicutes and Actinobacteria showed higher relative abundance at high-elevation and Japanese cities. Additionally, Mycobacterium species captured in the snow cover on Mt. Tateyama increased in relative abundance in correspondence to the increase of black carbon concentrations. The relative abundance of Mycobacterium sequences was higher in the aerosol samples of Asian continental cities and Japanese cities than in the desert area. Presumably, anthropogenic pollution over East Asia carries potential Mycobacterium species, which induce NTM-PD, thereby impacting upon the public health.

Long-range transport of atmospheric microplastics deposited onto glacier in southeast Tibetan Plateau

Micoroplastics (MPs) can be transported through atmospheric circulations, and have caused global attentions due to their potential risk to the environment. In this study, MPs in snowpit samples collected from Demula (DML) glacier in southeast Tibetan Plateau were investigated. The results showed that the average abundance of MPs in snow was 9.55 ± 0.9 items L^-1, with dominant shapes of plastic fibers and films. MPs size was dominated by MPs <200 μm, with detected minimum size of 48 μm from the DML glacier. MPs in snowpit indicated seasonal variations, showing relatively higher abundance during the monsoon season than that during the non-monsoon season. The chemical composition of MPs and backward air mass trajectory modeling revealed that MPs in DML snowpit mostly originated from the atmospheric long-range transport, suggesting the glacier in southeast Tibetan Plateau can be a temporal sink of atmospheric MPs. The surface structure of the MPs was rough and adhered to a large amount of mineral dust and metallic particles, revealed that these MPs have undergone severe weathering during transportation and after deposition. Based on the MPs data, multi-year average precipitation, and glacier mass balance of DML glacier, the deposition flux of MPs on DML glacier was estimated to be about 7640 ± 720 to 9550 ± 900 items m^-2 yr^-1 and the export from melting water was about 5.9 ± 1.3 × 10⁹ to 6.6 ± 1.4 × 10⁹ items yr^-1, indicating the glacier may be also an important source of MPs to the downstream ecosystems. These results provided the current status of MPs pollution on the Tibetan Plateau glaciers and new data to the study of MPs in typical cryospheric regions.

Organophosphate esters in Arctic air from 2011 to 2019: Concentrations, temporal trends, and potential sources

Concentrations of seven organophosphate ethers (OPEs) were quantified in passive air samples deployed for eight consecutive one-year periods from August 2011 to August 2019 at seven sampling sites in the area of Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard, Arctic. Non-chlorinated and chlorinated OPEs were approximately equally abundant and the mean atmospheric concentration for the sum of OPEs was around 300 pg/m³. Levels of OPEs were two orders of magnitude higher than those of polybrominated diphenyl ethers in the sampling regions, likely a result of efficient long-range transport and higher environmental release rates. For the two most abundant compounds, tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate and tris-n-butyl phosphate, increasing temporal trends in atmospheric concentrations were observed, with estimated doubling times of 2.9 and 4.2 years, respectively. Slightly elevated OPE levels at two sampling sites in the vicinity of a research station and the local airport suggest the possible influence of local contamination sources. Re-volatilization from glaciers may also influence levels of OPE in the Arctic atmosphere.

Dissolved PAHs impacted by air-sea interactions: Net volatilization and strong surface current transport in the Eastern Indian Ocean

In the Indian Ocean, the marine fate of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is impacted by the unique air-sea interactions with great monsoon characters. By collecting water-column samples during the monsoon transition period, we found PAHs (∑₈PAH: 1.1-27 ng L^-1) showed significantly different distributions from the Bay of Bengal, Equatorial Indian Ocean, Eastern Indian Ocean, and the South China Sea (p < 0.001). Their vertical profiles showed natural logarithm relationships with depth in the Bay of Bengal and Equatorial Indian Ocean. PAHs were mainly from wood/coal combustion and vehicle emission. The estimation of PAHs' air-seawater exchange flux revealed net volatilizations from seawater except in the Eastern Indian Ocean. The Wyrtki Jet, a surface current driven by the westerly wind, was observed in the equatorial area. This swift current could transport PAHs eastward efficiently with a mass flux of 636 ± 188 g s^-1. The subsurface current, Equatorial Undercurrent, played a less crucial role in PAHs' lateral transport with a flux of 115 ± 31.3 g s^-1. This study preliminarily revealed the role of air-sea interactions on PAHs' transport and fate in the open ocean. The coupled air-sea interactions with biogeochemical processes should be considered in future work.

Particle size distribution, wet deposition and scavenging effect of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in the atmosphere from a subtropical city of China

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) as emerging organic pollutants have received great attention, but the scavenging efficiency of particulate PFASs by wet deposition was rarely studied. For the first time, we reported the scavenging efficiency of PFASs on different particle sizes. In this study, both rainwater and particle samples were collected for a whole year from Xiamen, a subtropical city of China. Particulate PFASs ranged from 4.11 to 67.41 pg m^-3, with an average value of 26.56 pg m^-3, and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) were the main compounds. Perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs) were predominantly observed on fine particles (<1 μm), while PFOS and 6:2 chlorinated polyfluoroalkyl ether sulfonic acid (6:2 Cl-PFESA) had large proportions on coarse particles (1-2.5 μm and 2.5-10 μm). In the rainwater, PFASs ranged from 0.20 to 180.65 ng L^-1, with an average value of 10.71 ng L^-1, and perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA), PFOA were the main compounds. The wet deposition flux of ∑PFASs was 5200 mg km^-2 yr^-1, exhibiting high fluxes during the wet season (March to September). The scavenging efficiency of particulate PFOS and PFOA ranged from 68%-98% during the rainfall, and wash-out of the raindrops was found to be one of the main scavenging mechanisms. In addition, the precipitation duration and intensity influenced the scavenging efficiency. The scavenging capacity of PFCAs was large on fine particles, while for per-and polyfluoroalkyl sulfonic acids, the scavenging capacity was high on coarse particles. Our results showed that wet deposition effectively removed medium to long carbon chain (≥C6) PFASs in the atmosphere.

An observation-based adjustment method of regional contribution estimation from upwind emissions to downwind PM2.5 concentrations

We propose a method to adjust contributions from upwind emissions to downwind PM_2.5 concentrations to account for the differences between observed and simulated PM_2.5 concentrations in an upwind area. Emissions inventories (EI) typically have a time lag between the inventory year and the release year. In addition, traditional emission control policies and social issues such as the COVID-19 pandemic cause steady or unexpected changes in anthropogenic emissions. These uncertainties could result in overestimation of the emission impacts of upwind areas on downwind areas if emissions used in modeling for the upwind areas were larger than the reality. In this study, South Korea was defined as the downwind area while other regions in Northeast Asia including China were defined as the upwind areas to evaluate applicability of the proposed adjustment method. We estimated the contribution of emissions released from the upwind areas to PM_2.5 concentrations in South Korea from 2015 to 2020 using a three-dimensional photochemical model with two EIs. In these two simulations for 2015-2020, the annual mean foreign contributions differed by 4.1-5.5 µg/m³. However, after adjustment, the differences decreased to 0.4-1.1 µg/m³. The adjusted annual mean foreign contributions were 12.7 and 8.8 µg/m³ during 2015-2017 and 2018-2020, respectively. Finally, we applied the adjustment method to the COVID-19 pandemic period to evaluate the applicability for short-term episodes. The foreign contribution of PM_2.5 during the lockdown period in China decreased by 30% after adjustment and the PM_2.5 normalized mean bias in South Korea improved from 15% to -4%. This result suggests that the upwind contribution adjustment can be used to alleviate the uncertainty of the emissions inventory used in air quality simulations. We believe that the proposed upwind contribution adjustment method can help to correctly understand the contributions of local and upwind emissions to PM_2.5 concentrations in downwind areas.

Perfluoroalkyl substances in circum-ArcticRangifer: caribou and reindeer

Livers of caribou and reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) from Canada (n = 146), Greenland (n = 30), Svalbard (n = 7), and Sweden (n = 60) were analyzed for concentrations of eight perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids and four perfluoroalkane sulfonic acids. In Canadian caribou, PFNA (range < 0.01-7.4 ng/g wet weight, ww) and PFUnDA (<0.01-5.6 ng/g ww) dominated, whereas PFOS predominated in samples from South Greenland, Svalbard, and Sweden, although the highest concentrations were found in caribou from Southwest Greenland (up to 28 ng/g ww). We found the highest median concentrations of all PFAS except PFHxS in Akia-Maniitsoq caribou (Southwest Greenland, PFOS 7.2-19 ng/g ww, median 15 ng/g ww). The highest concentrations of ΣPFAS were also found in Akia-Maniitoq caribou (101 ng/g ww) followed by the nearby Kangerlussuaq caribou (45 ng/g ww), where the largest airport in Greenland is situated, along with a former military base. Decreasing trends in concentrations were seen for PFOS in the one Canadian and three Swedish populations. Furthermore, PFNA, PFDA, PFUnDA, PFDoDA, and PFTrDA showed decreasing trends in Canada's Porcupine caribou between 2005 and 2016. In Sweden, PFHxS increased in the reindeer from Norrbotten between 2003 and 2011. The reindeer from Västerbotten had higher concentrations of PFNA and lower concentrations of PFHxS in 2010 compared to 2002. Finally, we observed higher concentrations in 2010 compared to 2002 (albeit statistically insignificant) for PFHxS in Jämtland, while PFNA, PFDA, PFUnDA, PFDoDA, and PFTrDA showed no difference at all.

Humic-like substances (HULIS) in springtime aerosols at a high-altitude background station in the western North Pacific: Source attribution, abundance, and light-absorption

Atmospheric humic-like substances (HULIS) are important components of biomass-burning (BB) emissions and highly associated with light-absorbing organic aerosols (often referred to as brown carbon). This study highlights the importance of BB-emitted HULIS aerosols in peninsular Southeast Asian outflow to the subtropical western North Pacific. We determined various key light-absorbing characteristics of HULIS i.e. mass absorption cross-section (MAC_HULIS), absorbing component of the refractive index (k_HULIS), and absorption Ångström exponent (AAE_HULIS) based on ground-based aerosol light absorption measurements along with HULIS concentrations in springtime aerosols at Lulin Atmospheric Background Station (LABS; 2862 m above mean sea level), which is a representative high-altitude remote site in the western North Pacific. Daily variations of HULIS (0.58-12.92 μg m^-3) at LABS were mostly linked with the influence from incoming air-masses, while correlations with BB tracers and secondary aerosols indicated the attribution of primary and secondary sources. Stronger light absorption capability of HULIS was clearly evident from MAC_HULIS and k_HULIS values at 370 nm, which were about ~1.5 times higher during BB-dominated days (1.16 ± 0.75 m² g^-1 and 0.05 ± 0.03, respectively) than that during non-BB days (0.77 ± 0.89 m² g^-1 and 0.03 ± 0.04, respectively). Estimates from a simple radiative transfer model showed that HULIS absorption can add as much as 15.13 W g^-1 to atmospheric warming, and ~46% more during BB-dominated than non-BB period, highlighting that HULIS light absorption may significantly affect the Earth-atmosphere system and tropospheric photochemistry over the western North Pacific.

Distribution and potential sources of microplastics in sediments in remote lakes of Tibet, China

The prevalence of microplastics in water bodies such as oceans and rivers has received considerable attention in recent years. The present study contributes to this research effort by assessing microplastics in 12 remote lakes on the Tibetan Plateau, China. Despite the limited extent of human activities, at least 17 items and up to 2644 items of microplastics were found per kg of dried sediments collected from the lakes in Tibet. These values were considered high compared to the levels of microplastics reported in other lake areas worldwide. Our results showed that the most prevailing types of microplastics in the sediments were black or transparent fibers in the size range of 0.05-0.5 mm, which were mainly identified to be polyamide and polyethylene terephthalate using Fourier-transform infrared microspectroscopy. The number of microplastics found appeared to be higher in sediments with a higher silt and clay content. Atmospheric long-range transport, glacial meltwater and surface runoff represent potential pathways to carry microplastics from elsewhere to the remote lakes in Tibet. This study shall be of great significance in understanding the transport and distribution of microplastics in the environment at regional or global scale.

Spatial and temporal variations of 14C in Fucus spp. in Swedish coastal waters

Carbon-14 (14C) dominates the collective effective dose from globally dispersed long-lived radionuclides produced by and released from the nuclear power industry. Literature data on the discharge of 14C to the marine environment from nuclear power plants (NPPs) and its dispersion in the marine ecosystem are sparse. The local marine 14C background must be determined before the 14C enrichment in the marine environment from a NPP can be estimated. This is not trivial since marine activity concentrations of 14C vary spatially, partly due to long-range transport of 14C from other anthropogenic sources. We have analysed 14C in samples of several species of brown algae (Fucus spp.) collected at 45 sites along the Swedish coast in 2020. At sites remote from NPPs, the 14C activity concentrations per unit mass of carbon (here expressed as Fraction Modern, F14C) were significantly higher on the west coast than on the east coast (F14C up to about 1.10 in Skagerrak, and about 1.01, close to atmospheric levels, in the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Bothnia). On the west coast, F14C showed a strong correlation with salinity, both of which increased towards the north. This indicates that 14C is carried from other anthropogenic sources (e.g. from the nuclear fuel reprocessing plants at La Hague and Sellafield). The highest value of F14C observed was close to the Ringhals NPP on the west coast, F14C ≈ 1.3, which is higher than expected in the terrestrial environment of this NPP. We also report on temporal variations of F14C in Fucus spp. collected at Särdal on the Swedish west coast during the period 1967-2020. The values of F14C in the Särdal marine samples collected after the 1990s are clearly higher than F14C in clean air CO2, indicating contributions of 14C of anthropogenic origin.

Wet deposition of total dissolved nitrogen in Indo-Gangetic Plain (India)

Very limited information on the magnitude and environmental impacts of both inorganic and organic forms of nitrogen (N) wet deposition is available in India. Molar concentrations of inorganic (NH₄⁺ and NO₃^-) and organic N in rainwater were monitored at three different land use sites in Indo-Gangetic Plain (IGP) during the monsoon period (June-September) of 2017. It has been observed that dissolved organic N (DON) contributed significantly to the total dissolved N (TDN) ranging from 5 to 60%. Dissolved inorganic N (DIN = NH₄⁺ + NO₃^-) concentration was recorded as high as 221.0 μmol L^-1 at urban site to as low as 65.9 μmol L^-1 at the rural site. A similar pattern was also observed for DON. NH₄⁺ contribution to TDN had the order urban megacity (65%) > urban (70%) > rural (75%). Agriculture and animal husbandry are the primary sources of NH₄⁺ emissions in the rural site. However, NO₃^- has shown a contrasting trend at these sites (25%, 15%, and 8%, respectively). Wet deposition fluxes of atmospheric TDN were observed to be higher at urban sites. This can be attributed to a variety of local sources such as vehicular emission, microbial emissions, biomass burning, human excreta due to higher population density, and transportation from surrounding areas, as observed from concentration weighted trajectories (CWT) model and cluster analysis. Upwind region of IGP has experienced major influence of air mass transported from agriculturally rich northwest part of India. However, both the downwind sites have experienced by-and-large the influence of south-westerly air masses originated over the Arabian Sea. This study has found that the DON contributes significantly to TDN, and therefore, its inclusion for nitrogen budget assessment in South Asia is emphasized.

Vertically-resolved sources and secondary formation of fine particles: A high resolution tethered mega-balloon study over Shanghai

Numerous studies have focused on air pollution near the surface in China, yet we still have little knowledge on the characteristics, formation mechanisms, and sources of air pollutants aloft. Based on a tethered mega-balloon platform, the vertical profiles of PM_2.5, black carbon (BC), SO₂, O₃, and meteorological parameters were measured within the lower troposphere of 1000 m over Shanghai. One clean and slightly polluted period (CP) and one heavily polluted period (HP) with continuously measured profiles were compared. The potential source areas of PM_2.5 at different altitudes during HP were determined based on the time-lag spatial correlation analysis, indicating the surrounding regions were the main sources of low-altitude particles in Shanghai and farther regions of northern China significantly affected the upper atmosphere. By apportioning the sources of vertical BC profiles, fossil fuel combustion contributed >80% to BC below 600 m during HP, exhibiting a higher contribution than CP. An indicator (i.e. SA/SO₂, SA represents secondary aerosols) was established to investigate the vertical evolution of secondary aerosol formation. During CP, relatively low SA/SO₂ ratios were observed within the boundary layer due to the weak atmospheric processing. SA/SO₂ profiles showed the opposite vertical trend of higher ratios below about 600 m while lower values at high altitudes during HP. Regional and long-range transport regulated the extents of secondary aerosol formation. Northeasterlies transported abundant aged aerosols from northern China while sea breezes suppressed the columnar secondary aerosol formation. This study provided insights into the vertical structures of typical air pollutants in a Chinese megacity and implied that high-resolution measurements of atmospheric vertical profiles were valuable for diagnosing sources and potential secondary formation of fine particles.

A long-term atmospheric baseline for intercontinental exchange of airborne pathogens

The atmosphere is a potential pathway for global-scale and long-range dispersal of viable microorganisms, promoting biological interconnections among the total environment. We aimed to provide relevant baseline information for long-range long-term intercontinental exchange of potentially infectious airborne microorganisms of major interest in environmental and health-related disciplines. We used an interannual survey (7-y) with wet depositions fortnightly collected above the boundary layer (free troposphere) at a remote high-elevation LTER (Long-Term-Ecological-Research) site, analyzed by 16S and 18S rRNA genes, and compared to a database of 475 well-known pathogens. We applied a conservative approach on close relatives of pathogenic species (>98% identity) standing their theoretical upper limit for atmospheric baseline relative abundances. We identified c. 2-3% of the total airborne microbiota as potential pathogens. Their most frequent environmental origins were soil, aquatic, and anthropogenic sources. Phytopathogens (mostly fungi) were the potential infectious agents most widely present. We uncovered consistent interannual dynamics with taxa foreseeable over time (i.e., predictable seasonal behavior) and under recurrent environmental scenarios (e.g., Saharan dust intrusions), respectively, being highly valuable microbial forensic environmental indicators. Up to 8 bacterial and 21 fungal genera consistently showed temporal abundances and recurrences unevenly distributed. Incidence of allergenic fungi was lower in summer, and significantly higher in spring. Close relatives to Coccidioides posadasii consistently showed higher signals (i.e., high specificity and high fidelity) in winter, whereas Cryptococcus neoformans had a significant signal in spring. Along Saharan dust intrusions, the bacterial phytopathogens Acidovorax avenae and Agrobacterium tumefaciens and the fungal phytopathogens Pseudozyma hubeiensis and Peniophora sp. consistently showed higher signals. Potential human pathogens showed low proportion, being mostly fungal allergens. Microorganisms related to obligated human, amphibian and fish pathogens were commonly found in winter. More studies in remote field sites above the boundary layer will unveil whether or not a similar trend is found globally.

Carbonaceous aerosols in urban Chongqing, China: Seasonal variation, source apportionment, and long-range transport

Seventy-seven PM2.5 samples were collected at an urban site (Chongqing University Campus A) in October 2015 (autumn), December 2015 (winter), March 2016 (spring), and August 2016 (summer). These samples were analysed for organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), and their associated char, soot, 16 PAHs, and 28 n-alkanes to trace sources, and atmospheric transport pathways. The annual average of OC, EC, char, soot, ΣPAHs, and Σn-alkanes were 20.75 μg/m³, 6.18 μg/m³, 5.43 μg/m³, 0.75 μg/m³, 38.29 ng/m³, and 328.69 ng/m³, respectively. OC, ΣPAHs, and Σn-alkane concentrations were highest in winter and lowest in summer. EC, char, and soot concentrations were highest in autumn and lowest in winter. Source apportionment via positive matrix factorization (PMF) indicated that coal/biomass combustion-natural gas emissions (23.8%) and motor vehicle exhaust (20.2%) were the two major sources, followed by diesel and petroleum residue (21.1%), natural biogenic sources (17.7%), and evaporative/petrogenic sources (17.2%). The highest source contributor in autumn and winter was evaporative/petrogenic sources (30.6%) and natural biogenic sources (34.5%), respectively, whereas diesel engine emission contributed the most in spring and summer (32.1% and 38.0%, respectively). Potential source contribution function (PSCF) analysis identified southeastern Sichuan and northwestern Chongqing as the major potential sources of these pollutants. These datasets provide critical information for policymakers to establish abatement strategies for the reduction of carbonaceous pollutant emissions and improve air quality in Chongqing and other similar urban centres across China.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers in the environment: a wake-up call for concerted action in India

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are a class of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) used as flame retardants in the products utilized in day-to-day life. Their bioaccumulation, low volatility, and high persistence in the environment have led to their global spread even to remote and distant regions. The present study identifies gaps in the investigation of the neurotoxic potential of PBDEs, their effects on brain development, toxicokinetic, and their potential as a carcinogen. In India, to date, only human breast milk was assessed for levels of PBDEs, and it is suggested that other human tissues can also be explored. No data on the reproductive toxicity of PBDEs are reported from Indian cohorts. Long-range transport and deposition of PBDEs in colder regions necessitates monitoring of Himalayan regions in India. An inventory of PBDEs is required to be made for addressing the worrisome situation of the unregulated import of E-waste from the developed countries in India. The study also emphasizes providing guidelines for the articulation of policies regarding sound surveillance and management of PBDE production, consumption, and release in the Indian context. It is recommended that a separate cell for monitoring and follow-up of PBDEs should be established in India. Also, the development of better alternatives and environment-friendly remediation technologies for PBDEs is the need of the hour.

Characteristics and source attribution of PM2.5 during 2016 G20 Summit in Hangzhou: Efficacy of radical measures to reduce source emissions

A field campaign was conducted to study the PM_2.5 and atmospheric gases and aerosol's components to evaluate the efficacy of radical measures implemented by the Chinese government to improve air quality during the 2016 G20 Summit in Hangzhou China. The lower level of PM_2.5 (32.48 ± 11.03 µg/m³) observed during the control period compared to pre-control and post-control periods showed that PM_2.5 was alleviated by control policies. Based on the mass concentrations of particulate components, the emissions of PM_2.5 from local sources including fossil fuel, coal combustion, industry and construction were effectively reduced, but non-exhaust emission was not reduced as effectively as expected. The accumulation of SNA (SO₄^2-, NO₃^-, NH₄⁺) was observed during the control period, due to the favourable synoptic weather conditions for photochemical reactions and heterogeneous hydrolysis. Because of transboundary transport during the control period, air masses from remote areas contributed significantly to local PM_2.5. Although, secondary organic carbon (OC_sec) exhibited more sensitivity than primary organic carbon (OC_pri) to control measures, and the increased nitrogen oxidation ratio (NOR) implied the regional transport of aged secondary aerosols to the study area. Overall, the results from various approaches revealed that local pollution sources were kept under control, indicating that the implementation of mitigation measures were helpful in improving the air quality of Hangzhou during G20 summit. To reduce ambient levels of PM_2.5 further in Hangzhou, regional control policies may have to be taken so as to reduce the impact of long-range transport of air masses from inland China.

Comment on "Optimization of suspect and non-target analytical methods using GC/TOF for prioritization of emerging contaminants in the Arctic environment"

Lee et al. (2019) recently proposed that volatile methylsiloxanes (VMS) be considered as emerging contaminants in the Arctic environment based on the results of suspect and non-target screening of environmental samples collected from Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard. In any analytical program, it is of critical importance to be able to discern if the identification of analytes is due to true presence in the sampled environmental media or if contamination occurred during sample handling and analysis, leading to false positive detection. This is particularly important for VMS due to their ubiquity in consumer products, sample containers, and analytical instrumentation, thus requiring robust quality control (QC) procedures to support the validity of results. Although Lee et al. (2019) concluded that VMS in the environmental samples originated from potential long-range transport and deposition, it is most likely that local point sources account for their presence. Additionally, there is low confidence in the validity of the reported detection of VMS in the sampled environmental media as this study does not include any of the necessary QC to determine whether the VMS detected would be due to contamination or indicative of presence in the environment.

Time trends of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and Chemicals of Emerging Arctic Concern (CEAC) in Arctic air from 25 years of monitoring

The long-term time trends of atmospheric pollutants at eight Arctic monitoring stations are reported. The work was conducted under the Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme (AMAP) of the Arctic Council. The monitoring stations were: Alert, Canada; Zeppelin, Svalbard; Stórhöfði, Iceland; Pallas, Finland; Andøya, Norway; Villum Research Station, Greenland; Tiksi and Amderma, Russia. Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) such as α- and γ-hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), α-endosulfan, chlordane, dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) showed declining trends in air at all stations. However, hexachlorobenzene (HCB), one of the initial twelve POPs listed in the Stockholm Convention in 2004, showed either increasing or non-changing trends at the stations. Many POPs demonstrated seasonality but the patterns were not consistent among the chemicals and stations. Some chemicals showed winter minimum and summer maximum concentrations at one station but not another, and vice versa. The ratios of chlordane isomers and DDT species showed that they were aged residues. Time trends of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) were showing decreasing concentrations at Alert, Zeppelin and Andøya. The Chemicals of Emerging Arctic Concern (CEAC) were either showing stable or increasing trends. These include methoxychlor, perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS), 6:2 fluorotelomer alcohol, and C₉-C₁₁ perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs). We have demonstrated the importance of monitoring CEAC before they are being regulated because model calculations to predict their transport mechanisms and fate cannot be made due to the lack of emission inventories. We should maintain long-term monitoring programmes with consistent data quality in order to evaluate the effectiveness of chemical control efforts taken by countries worldwide.

Net volatilization of PAHs from the North Pacific to the Arctic Ocean observed by passive sampling

The North Pacific-Arctic Oceans are important compartments for semi-volatile organic compounds' (SVOCs) global marine inventory, but whether they act as a "source" or "sink" remains controversial. To study the air-sea exchange and fate of SVOCs during their poleward long-range transport, low-altitude atmosphere and surface seawater were measured for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) by passive sampling from July to September in 2014. Gaseous PAH concentrations (0.67-13 ng m^-3) were dominated by phenanthrene (Phe) and fluorene (Flu), which displayed an inverse correlation with latitude, as well as a significant linear relationship with partial pressure and inverse temperature. Concentrations of PAHs in seawater (1.8-16 ng L^-1) showed regional characteristics, with higher levels near the East Asia and lower values in the Bering Strait. The potential impact from the East Asian monsoon was suggested for gaseous PAHs, which - similar to PAHs in surface seawater - were derived from combustion sources. In addition, the data implied net volatilization of PAHs from seawater into the air along the entire cruise; fluxes displayed a similar pattern to regional and monthly distribution of PAHs in seawater. Our results further emphasized that air-sea exchange is an important process for PAHs in the open marine environments.

The characteristics of carbonaceous particles down to the nanoparticle range in Rangsit city in the Bangkok Metropolitan Region, Thailand

Atmospheric size-classified particles in sizes ranging from small to nanoparticles (PM_0.1) are reported for Rangsit City in the Bangkok Metropolitan Region (BMR) of Thailand, for October 2019 (wet season) and January-February 2020 (dry season). The sampling involved the use of a PM_0.1 cascade air sampler to determine the mass concentration. The PMs consisted of six stages including TSP-PM₁₀, PM_2.5-10, PM_1.0-2.5, PM_0.5-1.0, PM_0.5-1.0 and PM_0.1. Elemental carbon (EC) and organic carbon (OC) were evaluated by a carbon analyzer following the IMPROVE_TOR protocol. The average PM_0.1 mass concentrations were found to be 13.47 ± 0.79 (wet season) and 18.88 ± 3.99 (dry season) μg/m³, respectively. The average OC/EC ratio for the rainy season was lower than that in the dry season. The char-EC/soot-EC ratios were consistently below 1 for the PM_0.1 fraction in both seasons indicating that vehicular traffic appeared to be the main emission source. However, the influence of open biomass burning on fine and coarse PM particles on local air pollution was found to be an important issue during the wet season. In addition, long-range transport from other countries may also contribute to the carbon content in the Bangkok Metropolitan Region (BMR) atmosphere during the dry season. The higher secondary organic carbon to organic carbon (SOC/OC) ratio in the dry season is indicative of the contribution of secondary sources to the formation of PM, especially finer particles. A strong correlation between OC and EC in nanoparticles was found, indicating that they are derived from sources of constant emission, likely the diesel engines. Conversely, the OC and EC correlation for other size-specific PMs decreased during the dry season, indicating that these emission sources were more varied.

Ambient viral and bacterial distribution during long-range transport in Northern Taiwan

Long-range transport (LRT) reportedly carries air pollutants and microorganisms to downwind areas. LRT can be of various types, such as dust storm (DS) and frontal pollution (FP); however, studies comparing their effects on bioaerosols are lacking. This study evaluated the effect of LRT on viral and bacterial concentrations in Northern Taiwan. When LRT occurred and possibly affected Taiwan from August 2013 to April 2014, air samples (before, during, and after LRT) were collected in Cape Fugui (CF, Taiwan's northernmost point) and National Taiwan University (NTU). Reverse-transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) was applied to quantify influenza A virus. qPCR and qPCR coupled with propidium monoazide were, respectively, used to quantify total and viable bacteria. Types and occurrence of LRT were confirmed according to the changing patterns of meteorological factors and air pollution, air mass sources (HYSPLIT model), and satellite images. Two Asian DS and three FP cases were included in this study. Influenza A virus was detected only on days before and during FP occurred on January 3-5, 2014, with concentrations of 0.87 and 10.19 copies/m³, respectively. For bacteria, the increase in concentrations of total and viable cells during Asian DSs (17-19 and 25-29 November 2013) was found at CF only (from 3.13 to 3.40 and from 2.62 to 2.85 log copies/m³, respectively). However, bacterial levels at NTU and CF both increased during FP and lasted for 2 days after FP. In conclusion, LRT increased the levels of influenza A virus and bacteria in the ambient air of Northern Taiwan, particularly at CF. During and 2 days (at least) after LRT, people should avoid outdoor activities, especially in case of FP.

Distribution of atmospheric gaseous elemental mercury (Hg(0)) from the Sea of Japan to the Arctic, and Hg(0) evasion fluxes in the Eastern Arctic Seas: Results from a joint Russian-Chinese cruise in fall 2018

The Eastern Arctic Seas and the north-western Pacific are among the most poorly investigated areas as far as Hg cycling in marine systems is concerned. Continuous measurements of gaseous elemental mercury (Hg(0)) concentrations in the marine boundary layer and Hg(0) evasion fluxes from the sea surface were performed in these regions in fall 2018. Atmospheric Hg(0) concentrations of 1.02-2.50 ng/m³ were measured (average: 1.45 ± 0.12 ng/m³; N = 2518). Values in the Far Eastern Seas of Russia were lower compared to previous observations, presumably reflecting а global trend of decreasing atmospheric Hg(0). Concentration-weighted trajectory analysis highlighted three source regions influencing Hg(0) concentrations in the ambient air during the cruise: 1) the north-eastern China and the Yellow Sea region; 2) the Kuril-Kamchatka region of the Pacific Ocean and the region around the Commander and Aleutian Islands; and 3) the Arctic region. In the Arctic, sea-air Hg(0) evasion fluxes were at the same low levels as those observed earlier in the northern sea areas (0.28-1.35 ng/m²/h, average, 0.70 ± 0.26 ng/m²/h, N = 29). In the Eastern Arctic Seas, Hg(0) evasion fluxes were significantly dependent on river runoff. In the Arctic Ocean, they were negatively correlated with water temperature and positively correlated with salinity, suggesting a proximity to areas with contiguous ice and higher dissolved Hg(0) concentrations in the surface seawater. These findings are consistent with the hypothesis that the Arctic Ocean is a source of atmospheric Hg(0) during late summer and fall.

Assessment of long-range transboundary aerosols in Seoul, South Korea from Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) and ground-based observations

To better understand air quality issues in South Korea, it is essential to identify the main contributors of air pollution and to quantify the effects of transboundary transport. In this study, geostationary satellite measurements were used to assess the effects of aerosol transport on air quality in South Korea. This study proposes a method to define the long-range transport (LRT) of aerosols into the Korean Peninsula using remote sensing obervations and back-trajectories and estimates the LRT effects on air quality in Seoul using in-situ particulate matter (PM) measurements. Aerosol optical depths (AODs) are obtained from the Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI), and the back-trajectories are from the National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) HYbrid Single Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) model. For LRT events, satellite observations showed high AOD plumes over the Yellow Sea, a pathway between Eastern China and South Korea, and the movements of aerosol plumes transported to South Korea were also detected. PM_2.5 concentrations, PM₁₀ concentrations, and AOD during LRT increased by 52%, 49%, and 81%, respectively, relative to their average values for 2015-2018. To quantitatively characterize the LRT of aerosols, the effects of LRT on PM_2.5 concentrations were estimated for each PM concentration category. The contribution of LRT to PM_2.5 concentrations was estimated to be 33% during 2015-2018. When high concentrations of PM_2.5 were observed in Seoul, they were likely to be associated with LRT events.

Sensitivity of fine particulate matter concentrations in South Korea to regional ammonia emissions in Northeast Asia

Ammonia (NH3) is an important precursor for forming PM2.5. In this study, we estimated the impact of upwind transboundary and local downwind NH3 emissions on PM2.5 and its inorganic components via photochemical grid model simulations. Nine sensitivity scenarios with ±50% perturbations of upwind (China) and/or downwind (South Korea) NH3 emissions were simulated for the year 2016 over Northeast Asia. The annual mean PM2.5 concentrations in the downwind area were predicted to change from -3.3 (-18%) to 2.4 μg/m3(13%) when the NH3 emissions in the upwind and downwind areas were perturbed by -50% to +50%. The change in PM2.5 concentrations in the downwind area depending on the change in NH3 emissions in the upwind area was the highest in spring, followed by winter. This was mainly attributed to the change in nitrate (NO3-), a secondary inorganic aerosol (SIA) that is a predominant constituent of PM2.5. Since NH3 is mainly emitted near the surface and vertical mixing is limited during the night, it was modeled that the aloft nitric acid (HNO3)-to-NO3- conversion in the morning hours was increased when the NH3 accumulated near the surface during nighttime begins to mix up within the Planetary Boundary Layer (PBL) as it develops after sunrise. This implies that the control of upwind and/or downwind NH3 emissions is effective at reducing PM2.5 concentrations in the downwind area even under NH3 rich conditions in Northeast Asia.

Direct and cross impacts of upwind emission control on downwind PM2.5 under various NH3 conditions in Northeast Asia

Emissions reductions in upwind areas can influence the PM_2.5 concentrations in downwind areas via long-range transport. However, few studies have assessed the impact of upwind PM_2.5 precursor controls on changes in downwind PM_2.5 concentrations. In this study, we analyzed the overall impact of PM_2.5 precursor emission controls in upwind areas on PM_2.5 in downwind areas with two types of impacts: "direct impact" and "cross impact." The former refers to PM_2.5 changes in downwind areas due to the transported PM_2.5 itself, whereas the latter represents PM_2.5 changes due to reactions between the transported gaseous precursors and intermediates (i.e., HNO₃) originating from upwind areas and locally emitted precursors (i.e. NH₃) in the downwind areas. As a case study, we performed air quality modeling for Northeast Asia for January 15-17, 2016 by setting China and South Korea as the upwind and downwind areas, respectively. To account for potential spatiotemporal variations in NH₃ emissions in downwind areas, we considered two NH₃ conditions. When NOx emissions in China were reduced by 35%, in downwind areas the PM_2.5 concentrations decreased by 2.2 μg/m³ under NH₃-rich conditions, while PM_2.5 concentrations increased by 2.3 μg/m³ under NH₃-poor conditions. The direct impact increased by 4.0 μg/m³ in both cases due to upwind NO_x disbenefit effects. However, the cross impacts led to a PM_2.5 decrease of 6.2 μg/m³ under NH₃-rich conditions versus a PM_2.5 increase of 1.7 μg/m³ under NH₃-poor conditions. We noted that PM_2.5 concentrations in the downwind areas may not improve unless a cross impact outweighs a direct impact. This may be one of the reasons why South Korea PM_2.5 concentrations have not declined despite efforts by China to reduce their PM_2.5 precursor emissions.
