Abstract
The current study aimed to describe the annual gametogenic phenology of the oyster Magallana bilineata (Röding, 1798) (=Crassostrea madrasensis), which is found on the west coast of Moheshkhali Island, Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh. Samples were drawn monthly from the intertidal region during low tide, from which 20 adult individuals were selected at random for biometry and histology. The mean condition index (CI), a ratio of tissue wet weight (g) to shell length (cm), varied from 0.58 ± 0.08 to 1.32 ± 0.36. Histology revealed two spawning cycles in the habitat of M. bilineata over the 12 months of the study. Gametogenesis initiated in December and May, and ripe animals principally occurred from July to September and February to May. In the habitat, M.bilineata exhibited two spawning peak periods: April to June and August to October. The undifferentiated stage as a preparatory step for the next spawning extended from November to February for the first spawning cycle and for a brief period in June for the next spawning cycle. The initiation of spawning in March could be associated with the high-level decline of salinity and increased temperature between February and March, in association with the annual rainfall start, whereas the next spawning cycle could be associated with a gradual increase in salinity. No spawning activity was reported from December to February, when the water temperature remained below 22 °C. Further study could be undertaken on the timing of spatfall of M.bilineata in the habitat to harvest spats for commercial farming of this promising species.

Abstract
Digital images are commonly used to monitor processes that are based on colour changes due to their simplicity and easy capture. Colour information in these images can be analysed objectively and accurately using colour histograms. One such process is olive ripening, which is characterized by changes in chemical composition, sensory properties and can be followed by changes in physical appearance, mainly colour. The reference method to quantify the ripeness of olives is the Maturity Index (MI), which is determined by trained experts assigning individual olives into a colour scale through visual inspection. Instead, this study proposes a methodology based on Chemometrics Assisted Colour Histogram-based Analytical Systems (CACHAS) to automatically assess the MI of olives based on R, G, and B colour histograms derived from digital images. The methodology was shown to be easily transferable for routine analysis and capable of controlling the ripening of olives. The study also confirms the high potential of digital images to understand the ripening process of olives (and potentially other fruits) and to predict the MI with satisfactory accuracy, providing an objective and reproducible alternative to visual inspection of trained experts.

Abstract
Sunburn is a physiological fruit disorder induced by exposure to excessive solar radiation. This disorder leads to significant losses in the yield of marketable fruits by negatively affecting quality parameters such as maturity and external color of the fruits. The purpose of this work was to characterize the physiological and biochemical aspects related to oxidative metabolism in Beurré D'Anjou pear fruit with different sunburn levels. Fruits were collected and classified into three sunburn levels at harvest: no sunburn (S0), mild sunburn (S1), and moderate sunburn (S2). On sunburned area, the maturity indices were measured on the fruit flesh, while external color, photosynthetic and photoprotective pigments, total phenols, electrolyte leakage, lipid peroxidation, antioxidant capacity and antioxidant enzymatic activities were determined on fruit peel. The hue angle and saturation of peel color of pears with different sunburn levels showed significant reduction with increasing damage. These changes in peel color were associated with a reduction in chlorophyll content and variations in carotenoid and anthocyanin levels. Due to metabolic changes resulting from defense and adaptive responses to high solar radiation, sunburned tissues showed significantly increased firmness, soluble solids content, and starch degradation, and lower acidity compared to undamaged fruits. We observed also increased antioxidant capacity in the peel of S1 and S2 fruit, related to higher phenolic contents and increased SOD and APX activities. Consistent with previous reports in apple, our study demonstrates that sunburn affects pear fruit quality traits and maturity state by enhancing oxidative metabolism.

Abstract
It is increasingly believed that soil nematodes play an important role in the soil community and have a pronounced influence on the evaluation of soil health and the monitoring of soil food web changes. Soil aggregates provide habitable pore space and resource availability for soil organisms. The distribution of soil nematodes, which are relatively small soil fauna, may be related to the degree of soil aggregates. Soil nematode communities were studied with different soil components: large macro-aggregates (> 2 mm), medium macro-aggregates (2-1 mm), small macro-aggregates (1-0.25 mm), and micro-aggregates (< 0.25 mm) extracted from the same crop variety plantings (Sichuan tea) of different ages (19 years, 26 years, 34 years, and 56 years) in Sichuan province, southwestern China, in 2018. The results showed that the tea plantation with 26 years of cultivation was more suitable for the propagation of nematode communities, and the numbers of total nematodes were highest in the > 2 mm fractions. Compared with other tea plantations, the Margalef index (SR) of 26-year-old tea plantation was significantly higher than that within the large and medium macro-aggregates, and the maturity index (MI) was higher in the large and small macro-aggregates in the 26-year-old tea plantation. In the large macro-aggregates, the value of functional metabolic footprints decreased with the tea plantation age. In addition, the functional metabolic footprints increased with the increase in soil aggregate size. Our finding suggests that nematode communities are limited by resource availability and resource quality played an important role in determining nematode communities. Moreover, the soil food web was degenerated with the age of tea cultivation. Therefore, in the study area, it is necessary to pay attention to the rational allocation and application of organic fertilizer in the late stage of tea planting, so as to maintain the soil fertility and soil food web structure of the tea garden.

Abstract
Composting has been a rational method to dispose of horse or wildlife animal manures, especially in the developed cities with horse clubs and wildlife parks. However, few studies have focused on the mechanism and improvement methods for composting the horse or wildlife animal manures. In this study, we investigated the effect of exogenous compound enzymes on thermophilic composting, which could potentially support the management of horse and wildlife animal manures. With the presence of exogenous enzymes, the duration of high temperature (> 60 °C) was significantly prolonged (p < 0.05), and the germination index was significantly improved (p < 0.05). More-efficient improvement of composting maturity was associated with the addition of that exogenous enzyme that might influence microflora succession and the interaction among microorganic communities, especially fungal, during the composting process. Furthermore, redundancy and canonical correspondence analyses indicated that the C/N ratio, temperature, and germination index were significant variations to influence bacterial communities (p < 0.05). The dominant Flavobacterium, Thermopolyspora, Thermomonospora, and Chaetomium and Saccobolus could play an essential role in carbohydrate and phytotoxin degradation, while Thermobispora and norank_f_Limnochordaceae could lead to temperature rising.

Abstract
Modern technologies (especially with the help of autonomous measurement and control systems) introduced automatic composters for the disposal of household food waste production. Environmental risks connected with the utilization of these composts can be characterized by the high electrical conductivity caused by a presence of sodium chloride in food. Electrical conductivity influences the ecotoxicity of the composts. The presence of pesticides in composted food also represents an important environmental problem. The following pesticides were found in compost samples from household food waste: 1,3,5-triazine, methyl trithion, bifenthrin, bifenox, carbophenothion, pirimicarb, dioxacarb, desmetryn. Pesticide content in composts varied from 0.3 to 16.3 μg/kg, the average value being 30.4 ± 10.1 μg/kg dry matter. The higher decomposition was found of "modern" pesticides in the composters. The removal of salts can ensure that inhibition will be < 30% while washing with the ratio of 1:3 will result in the inhibition < 5%. However, this way of processing is not effective for other organisms-Poecilia reticulata (mortality 100%) and Daphnia magna (immobilisation 100%) using this procedure as well as washing of the compost in the ratio 3:1.

Abstract
The effect of adding different proportions of natural clinoptilolite zeolite (5 and 10%) to food waste vermicomposting was investigated by assessing the physicochemical characteristics, worms' growth, and maturation time of finished vermicompost in comparison with the vermicompost prepared with no amendment (control). Vermicomposting was performed in 18 plastic containers for 70 days. The experimental results showed that the carbon-to-nitrogen (C/N) ratios were 15.85, 10.75, and 8.94 for 5 and 10% zeolite concentration and control after 70 days, respectively. The addition of zeolite could facilitate organic matter degradation and increase the total nitrogen content by adsorption of ammonium ions. Increasing the proportion of zeolite from 0% (control) to 10% decreased the ammonia escape by 25% in the final vermicompost. The natural zeolite significantly reduced the electrical conductivity (EC). At the end of the process, salinity uptake efficiency was 39.23% for 5% zeolite treatment and 45.23% for 10% zeolite treatment. The pH values at 5 and 10% zeolite-amended treatments were 7.31 and 7.57, respectively, in comparison to 7.10 in the control. The maturation time at the end of vermicomposting decreased with increasing zeolite concentration. The vermicompost containing 5 and 10% zeolite matured in 49 and 42 days, respectively, in comparison to 56 days for the control. With the use of an initial ten immature Eisenia fetida worms, the number of mature worms in the 10% zeolite treatment was 26 more than that in the 5% zeolite treatment (21 worms) and 9 more than that in the control treatment (17 worms). Significantly, natural zeolite showed a beneficial effect on the characteristics of the end-product when used in the vermicomposting of food waste.

Abstract
Vermicompost was prepared by five different treatments from relatively resistant coconut husk mixed with either pig slurry or poultry manure. The recovery of vermicompost varied from 35% to 43% and it resulted in significant increase in pH, microbial biomass carbon, macro and micro nutrients concentration. Among the treatments highest relative N (1.6) and K (1.3) recovery were observed for 20% feedstock substitution by pig slurry while poultry manure substitution recorded highest P recovery (2.4). Compost maturity parameters significantly differed and well correlated. The characteristics of different treatments established the maturity indices as C/N 15-20; Cw<1.8; Cw/Norg<0.55; Lignin<10-12; CHA/CFA>1.5 and HI>15.0. The manurial value of the coconut husk compost was improved by feedstock substitution with pig slurry (80:20). The results revealed the technical feasibility of converting coconut husk into valuable compost by feedstock substitution with pig slurry.

Abstract
Non-indigenous ascidians are of particular concern to aquaculture industry and, paradoxically, the activities associated with it represent an important way to translocate these species worldwide. In 2012 a non-indigenous ascidian was found covering the oyster crops in the Ebro Delta (Western Mediterranean). We have identified the ascidian genetically and morphologically as Didemnum vexillum Kott, 2002. This finding indicates that the species is currently expanding its distribution in the Mediterranean Sea, as it has recently been found in the eastern basin (Venice, Adriatic Sea). Introduced populations of D. vexillum are found in temperate and cold waters worldwide, and a successful establishment in the Mediterranean implies a remarkable capacity of adaptability to warm, subtropical conditions. We assessed the life cycle (growth and reproduction) of the ascidian at the studied site. The species has a marked seasonal cycle, with regression in the warmest months and reappearance during winter. In spring D. vexillum reaches its maximum abundance, followed by a peak in reproduction just before regression. This cycle is reversed with respect to the one observed in colder waters, highlighting a plastic biological cycle of this invader and an hitherto unknown ability to establish itself in warm waters. We also analysed the genetic structure of the population of the Ebro Delta and the one established in the Lagoon of Venice using COI sequence data. The low genetic diversity in our samples (three haplotypes) was consistent with what is observed in the introduced populations worldwide. It is likely that the ascidian was introduced with oyster stock from bivalve cultures in the Atlantic French coasts, where the same three haplotypes have been reported. The high boating activity in the Ebro Delta makes further human-mediated transport of the species highly likely, and nearby fishing grounds can be severely affected if invaded. It is urgent to implement measures to prevent the continuous expansion of this ascidian pest in the Mediterranean.

Abstract
Small-scale laboratory microcosms (30 g soil in 50 ml tubes) were evaluated for their suitability to assess the impact of chemicals on in situ soil nematode communities. For this purpose, appropriate conditions in the microcosms were explored to ensure stable conditions and a homogenous distribution of the nematodes. Then, the microcosms were used to assess the toxicity of insecticidal crystal proteins (Cry1A.105, Cry2Ab2, Cry3Bb1) present in genetically modified maize (MON89034×MON88017) on in situ nematode communities. Highly abundant and genus rich nematode communities could be maintained over a period of 12 weeks. Due to a low variance between the replicates of the treatments, low detection limits could be achieved. Using meaningful stress indices, such as the maturity indices, the microcosm study revealed dose-dependent effects of the insecticidal Cry proteins that could be verified as toxic effects by comparing with effects of two positive controls (Cu, nematicidal Cry5B). Moreover, toxic effects could be differentiated from organic enrichment effects that were induced by the addition of plant material. With a NOECCommunity of 0.1 mg kg(-1) dry wt, the nematode communities reacted considerably more sensitive to the Cry proteins than a single-species nematode toxicity test (NOEC: 29 mg l(-1)). The small-scale microcosm set-up turned out to be a suitable, low-budget tool for assessing the toxicity of chemicals on soil nematodes on community level, representing a link between single-species toxicity tests and large scale outdoor mesocosms.

Abstract
In this work, the maturity index of different samples of olives was objectively assessed by image analysis obtained through machine vision, in which algorithms of color-based segmentation and operators to detect edges were used. This method allows a fast, automatic and objective prediction of olive maturity index. This prediction value was compared to maturity index (MI), generally used by olive oil industry, based on the subjective visual determination of color of fruit skin and flesh. Machine vision was also applied to the automatic estimation of size and weight of olive fruits. The proposed system was tested to obtain a good performance in the classification of the fruit in batches. When applied to several olive samples, the maturity index predicted by machine vision was in close agreement with the maturity index of fruits visually estimated, values that are currently used as standards. The evaluation of weight of fruit also provided good results (R(2) = 0.91). These results obtained by image analysis can be used as a useful method for the classification of olives at the reception in olive mill, allowing a better quality control of the production process.

Abstract
We studied soil nematode communities from the surface of granite flatrock outcrops in the eastern Piedmont region of the United States. The thin soils that develop here experience high light intensity and extreme fluctuations in temperature and moisture and host unique plant communities. We collected soils from outcrop microsites in Virginia (VA) and North Carolina (NC) in various stages of succession (Primitive, Minimal, and Mature) and compared soil properties and nematode communities to those of adjacent forest soils. Nematodes were present in most outcrop soils, with densities comparable to forest soils (P > 0.05). Nematode communities in Mature and Minimal soils had lower species richness than forest soils (P < 0.05) and contained more bacterial-feeders and fewer fungal-feeders (P < 0.05). Primitive soils contained either no nematodes (NC) or only a single species (Mesodorylaimus sp., VA). Nematode communities were similar between Mature and Minimal soils, according to trophic group representation, MI, PPI, EI, SI, and CI (P > 0.05). Forest soils had a higher PPI value (P < 0.05), but otherwise community indices were similar to outcrop soils (P > 0.05). Outcrop nematode communities failed to group together in a Bray-Curtis cluster analysis, indicating higher variability in community structure than the Forest soils, which did cluster together. A high proportion of the nematodes were extracted from outcrop soils in coiled form (33-89%), indicating that they used anhydrobiosis to persist in this unique environment.
