[The third version of diabetes attitude scale in arabic language: Reliability, validity and normative data]

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study was to translate and analyze the psychometric properties of the third version of the Arabic Diabetes Attitude Scale.

METHODS

A methodological study of psychometric validation of the scale according to the guidelines of Vallerand cross-cultural validation was conducted. Type 1 and type 2 diabetics, aged 18 and over, without cognitive impairment or altered mental status were recruited on a convenience-sampling basis. An Arabic-language self-administrated developed questionnaire including diabetics' demographic and clinical data and the experimental third version of the Diabetes Attitude Scale was used. All Vallerand cross-cultural validation steps were completed except for convergent validity and confirmatory analysis.

RESULTS

A sample of 333 diabetics was recruited. Reliability and validity of the experimental version of the scale were satisfactory. Correlations between test and retest dimensions were close to 1, and overall Cronbach's alpha coefficient of the experimental version was 0.769. The content validity index was 0.82 proving the accuracy of the concept measurements by the scale. Principal components analysis, by orthogonal Varimax rotation, produced nine factors. Correlation coefficients between the five dimensions of the theoretical model of the scale ranged from 0.002 to 0.367, confirming that each dimension measured a single content.

CONCLUSION

The third version of the Arabic Diabetes Attitude Scale has been proven valid and reliable. It is ready for use in clinical practice.

A systematic review of the psychometric properties of the Jebsen-Taylor Hand Function Test (JTHFT)

This systematic review of the literature aimed to identify studies examining the psychometric properties of the Jebsen-Taylor Hand Function Test (JTHFT) in various international populations on. The search was conducted in MEDLINE, SCOPUS, CINAHL and Web Of Science, with no restrictions on publication period, the country in which the study was conducted, or the age of the patients. Eligible studies were selected on the basis of inclusion criteria and data were extracted. Study quality and the risk of bias were assessed using the COnsensus-based Standards to select the health Measurement Instruments (COSMIN) checklist. 805 articles were identified; after removing duplicates, there were 361 single studies. 338 articles did not concern the psychometric properties of JTHFT. The remaining 23 studies were selected for full text review, and all were included. They comprised 8 languages and 9 pathologies. These findings suggest the JTHFT is a useful test of manual dexterity in activities of daily living. This study provides specific information on the instrument's psychometric properties in different populations and supports clinicians in making informed decisions when choosing instruments for upper-limb evaluations.

Cross-Cultural Adaptation and Validation of the Quality of Life Questionnaire for Caregivers of Patients with Schizophrenia (S-CGQoL) in Latin America

OBJECTIVES

The aim of this study was to adapt and validate the Schizophrenia Caregiver's Quality of Life Questionnaire (S-CGQoL) for use in the Hispanic-American population from the caregiver's perspective.

METHODS

A cross-sectional instrumental model was used, with a sample of 253 caregivers of patients suffering of Schizophrenia in Bolivia, Peru and Chile. The psychometric properties of the S-CGQoL were tested through construct validity, reliability and some aspects of external validity. In addition, in order to assess the nature of the different items across the three countries, a Differential Performance Analysis (DPA) was conducted.

RESULTS

A confirmatory factor analysis showed that the scale structure was well correlated to the initial structure of the QoL-MDS. The results confirmed the existence of adequate reliability indicators (α>.70 and ω>.80) and the absence of FIDs supporting the invariance of item calibrations among the three Latin American countries.

CONCLUSIONS

The adaptation and validation of the S-CGQoL questionnaire demonstrate adequate psychometric properties to assess the quality of life of caregivers in samples of middle-income countries in Latin America.

[Health related quality of life in chronic venous disease: Systematic literature review]

OBJECTIVE

Excepting life-threatening situations, improvement of health-related quality-of-life is the main therapeutic goal in chronic disease. The purpose of this review was to study the different ways of assessing Quality-of-Life (QoL) in patients with chronic venous disease (CVD) (CEAP classes C3 to C6).

METHODS

A literature search was conducted with three databases: MEDLINE, WEB OF SCIENCE and COCHRANE LIBRARY in order to identify articles with the PRISMA reporting guidelines. Then we compared psychometric performance of general and specific QoL questionnaires for a French population with CVD.

RESULTS

A total of 481 articles were identified, from which 25 were selected and analyzed. CIVIQ 20, CIVIQ 14 and VEINES Qol/sym are the specific health related QoL scales validated for a French population with CVD. VEINES Qol/sym was specifically validated in patients with leg ulcer or post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS). CIVIQ 14 is a CIVIQ 20 optimized to be used more widely in international studies and validated in milder forms of the CVD spectrum (C0 à C4). The general health related QoL scales are SF-36, SF-12 and EQ-5D. EQ-5D is simple and provides health state utility values.

CONCLUSION

CIVIQ 14 is a simple specific health-related QoL scale for less severe CVD. VEINES Qol/sym was developed for severe CVD and PTS but clinically relevant point scales remain to be assessed. EQ-5D is a generic scale to be preferred to assess economic impact based on a cost-utility analysis.

Psychometric properties of the French version of a scale measuring perceived emotional intelligence : the Trait Meta-Mood Scale (TMMS)

OBJECTIVE

The Trait Meta-Mood Scale (TMMS), a 30-item self-assessment questionnaire, has been developed to measure perceived emotional intelligence (EI) level in 3 dimensions: Attention, Clarity and Repair. This study aimed to explore the psychometric properties of the French version of this instrument.

METHOD

The instrument factor structure, normality, internal consistency, stability and concurrent validity were assessed in a sample of 824 young adults (456 female). Besides TMMS, participants completed self-assessment questionnaires for affectivity (Shortened Beck Depression Inventory, State and Trait Anxiety Inventory, Positive and Negative emotion scale), alexithymia (Bermond-Vorst Alexithymia Questionnaire-B) and interpersonal functioning (Empathy Quotient). Discriminant validity was tested in 64 female patients with anorexia nervosa, identified in literature as having difficulties with introspection, expression and emotional regulation.

RESULTS

Confirmatory factor analysis results replicate the 3-factor structure. Internal consistency and reliability indices are adequate. Direction and degree of correlation coefficients between TMMS dimensions and other questionnaires support the instrument concurrent validity. TMMS allows to highlight differences in perceived EI levels between men and women (Attention: p < 0.001 ; Clarity: p < 0.05) as well as between patients with anorexia nervosa and control subjects (p < 0.001 for all 3 dimensions).

CONCLUSION

This first validation study shows satisfying psychometric properties for TMMS French version.

[Study of the psychometric properties of the CES-D in a sample of French-speaking adolescents]

The aim of this paper is to study and validate the French version of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale developed by Radloff (in 1977) in an adolescent sample. This scale was developed to measure levels of depressive symptomatology, with special emphasis on the affective components and depressed mood.

METHOD

The data used in this study were collected in 11 schools. Our sample was composed of 1496 French-speaking, Belgian secondary school students aged 12 to 16 years. The questionnaire included demographic information such as age, gender, grade and family composition. The position of the CES-D scale has not changed and was placed in the last part of the self-administered questionnaire.

RESULTS

After an exploratory factor analysis, we conducted confirmatory factor analysis to test our factor model. We tested the model with four factors proposed by Radloff (in 1977) and also the model proposed by Chabrol (in 2002). Our results indicate a better match with Radloff's model in our sample, showing the relevance of using Radloff's model with four factors in adolescents. Although our analysis shows a clear gender difference with regard to depressive symptoms, the tested factor model remained stable regardless of the gender of the adolescent.
