Polybrominated diphenyl ether contamination in sediments from rivers in the western Niger Delta of Nigeria

This study investigated the concentrations of 39 polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) congeners in sediments from three rivers in the western Niger Delta of Nigeria that have been affected by pollution from urbanization and industrial activities. The Σ39 PBDE concentrations in sediments from these rivers ranged from 0.29 to 95.5, 5.15 to 121, and 0.73 to 66.1 ng g-1 for the Afiesere (AR), Edor (ER), and Okpare Rivers (OR), respectively. The homologue distribution patterns indicated the prominence of tetra- and penta-BDE congeners in sediments from these rivers. The ecological risk assessment results showed that the penta-BDEs were the primary source of risk to sediment-dwelling organisms in these rivers. However, the human health risk assessment indicated negligible risks for exposure of both adults and children to PBDEs in these sediments. The source apportionment suggests that the PBDE contamination in these river sediments was derived from long-distance migration, debromination of highly brominated congeners, and commercial penta-BDEs. These results reflect the use of penta-BDE formulations in this region rather than octa- and deca-BDE formulations.

Microplastics contamination in the fishes of selected sites in Pasig River and Marikina River in the Philippines

Microplastics (MPs), <5 mm in size, are a concerning pollutant in bodies of water because they can be ingested by biological organisms, posing risks to humans and the environment. This study assessed the extent of MPs contamination in various fish species (Oreochromis niloticus, Arius manillensis, and Pterygoplichthys spp.) in selected sites along two major river systems in the Philippines - Pasig and Marikina Rivers. An optimized Raman microspectroscopy technique was used for imaging and identification of MPs using a mean laser spot size of about 1 μm, which is advantageous in the identification of fibers which have small diameters (<50 μm). It also allowed the simultaneous identification of MPs and their pigment additives, which in turn enabled the tracing of possible sources of these MPs. This is important because the fate and accumulation of MPs in rivers systems, as well as its toxicity is dependent on various factors including polymer type and surface chemistry. Majority of the MPs identified from all the fish species were composed of polypropylene and polyethylene in the form of fragments, which reflects both the widespread use of these polymers for packaging and their environmental fate as riverine plastic debris. Moreover, the detection of MPs in the fish species may affect the food chain and eventually pose health risks for humans. The study could provide guidance on waste and environmental water management in the surrounding region.

Characterization of clinostomum (digenea: clinostomidae) spp. in India

Platyhelminths belonging to the family Clinostomidae (Digenea) have a worldwide distribution and are known to infect piscivorous birds through their intermediate hosts, usually fish species. In the present study, clinostome metacercariae were collected from fish hosts, including Channa punctata (Bloch 1793) (n = 25) and Trichogaster fasciata Bloch and Schneider 1801 (n = 25), from a freshwater system in India. The experimental infection of cattle egrets, Ardea (Bubulcus) ibis Linnaeus 1758, with some of the live metacercariae found in the present study was successful. Live adult parasites were obtained from the buccal cavity of the birds. Both metacercaria and adult specimens were subjected to molecular studies to obtain the sequences of 28S, ITS1, and ITS2 (nuclear rDNA) regions. The parasites were found to belong to three species, Clinostomum giganticum Agarwal 1959; C. piscidium Southwell and Prashad 1918; and Euclinostomum heterostomum (Rudolphi 1809). Phylogenetic analyses of the sequences obtained from the adults and metacercariae established a link between the metacercariae in the fish hosts and adults in the avian host, which is essential to elucidate their partial life cycle and specify morphological characteristics in the metacercarial stage.

Level of pesticides contamination in the major river systems: A review on South Asian countries perspective

Pesticides are chemical compounds used worldwide for different purposes. These chemicals are well known for their long life, high toxicity, and slow degradation process. Many developed countries including South Asian countries banned the use of pesticides for their adverse effects. However, several pesticides are found incessantly in water and soil. To highlight the recent situation of pesticide contamination in South Asian river systems, we have studied 136 relevant articles published from 2015 to 2020. Articles were gathered using several commonly available search engines and organized according to information related to river systems of South Asian countries. After thoroughly examining those research articles, we summarized that most of the river systems are contaminated by pesticides, where DDTs, HCHs, endosulfan, heptachlor, and chlorpyrifos are the key recognized compounds among them. Comparing the level of pesticides with standard guidelines, we found that the Tapi River and Chilika Lake of India are considerably more contaminated than other river basins. Multivariate analyses identified the industrial discharge and agricultural run-off of chemicals as the probable sources of pesticides in these rivers. By analyzing the amount of annual pesticide production, their use, and accordingly their considerable presence in the water systems of the South Asian countries, it is evident that the banned pesticides are used regularly by these countries and thus contaminating the environment. Therefore, the formulations of appropriate rules and their enforcement to control the manufacture and solicitation of such pesticides are an urgent need to save the environment.

Ecological risk assessment and source apportionment of metals in the surface sediments of river systems in Lake Taihu Basin, China

In this study, the concentrations of Zn, Cr, Ni, Cu, Pb, As, Cd, and Hg in the surface sediments of 94 sites sampled from six water systems in the Lake Taihu Basin in China were measured, and the pollution risks and sources of the metals were identified. The results showed that the mean concentrations of Zn, Cr, Ni, Cu, Pb, As, Cd, and Hg in the riverine surface sediments were 163.6, 102.5, 45.5, 44.7, 37.0, 13.3, 0.5, and 0.1 mg/kg, respectively, higher than the corresponding background values (except for Hg). According to the geoaccumulation index (I_geo), the Pb, Ni, Zn, Cu, and Cd concentrations in the riverine surface sediments were generally at low levels of pollution. Based on a pollution load index (PLI) evaluation, the Pb, Ni, Zn, and Cu concentrations in the riverine surface sediments were generally at moderate levels of pollution. According to the thresholds of potential ecological risk, the Cd and Hg concentrations in the riverine surface sediments exhibited moderate potential ecological risks. Multivariate statistical analysis indicated that the Pb in the riverine surface sediments primarily originated from domestic sewage, agricultural wastewater discharge, and petroleum combustion; the concentrations of Cr, Ni, and Zn were influenced by the electroplating and alloy manufacturing industries; the concentrations of Cu and As mainly originated from pesticide use and industrial wastewater discharge; and those of Cd and Hg primarily stemmed from industrial wastewater discharge. This research provides information regarding metallic contamination and the possible associated ecological risks to benthic organisms in the surface sediments of river systems and is useful for developing sustainable strategies for environmental pollution control and management in the Lake Taihu Basin.

Degrading flood regulation function of river systems in the urbanization process

This study developed the potential regulation capacity (PRC) and actual regulation capacity (ARC) to characterize the flood regulation function of river systems in the delta plains. Spatial autocorrelation and the grey relational analysis were then employed to investigate the spatial-temporal change of the flood regulation function in the urbanization process, of which the results revealed its spatial coupling and quantitative relation with the urbanization process and river systems changes in the Taihu Plain. The results indicated that: (1) the PRC exhibited a 20.3%-decrease during the 1960s to the 2010s, though its change exhibited significant structural and hierarchical differences. The global distributions of the PRCs all presented insignificant clustered characteristics, and the local distribution of smaller PRC regions with a high flood risk was stable; (2) the ARC exhibited a 33.2%-reduction in the recent 50years, and its decrement also exhibited an accelerating trend. The global ARC distribution changed from significant clusters to insignificant aggregations, and the local distribution range of the smaller ARC regions with a high flood risk gradually increased; (3) the spatial coupling degree between the change in the PRC and the urbanization process was greater than that between the change in the ARC and the urbanization process, and the effect of urbanization on the change in the PRC was also larger than the change in the ARC; (4) the spatial coupling degree between the changes in the ARC and the river systems was greater than that between the changes in the PRC and the river systems, though the impacts of the river systems changes on the change in the PRC were larger than that on the change in the ARC. Therefore, the developed indicators based on limited and available information can serve as references for planning effective flood control strategies in the delta plains.

Addressing the complexity of water chemistry in environmental fate modeling for engineered nanoparticles

Engineered nanoparticle (ENP) fate models developed to date - aimed at predicting ENP concentration in the aqueous environment - have limited applicability because they employ constant environmental conditions along the modeled system or a highly specific environmental representation; both approaches do not show the effects of spatial and/or temporal variability. To address this conceptual gap, we developed a novel modeling strategy that: 1) incorporates spatial variability in environmental conditions in an existing ENP fate model; and 2) analyzes the effect of a wide range of randomly sampled environmental conditions (representing variations in water chemistry). This approach was employed to investigate the transport of nano-TiO2 in the Lower Rhône River (France) under numerous sets of environmental conditions. The predicted spatial concentration profiles of nano-TiO2 were then grouped according to their similarity by using cluster analysis. The analysis resulted in a small number of clusters representing groups of spatial concentration profiles. All clusters show nano-TiO2 accumulation in the sediment layer, supporting results from previous studies. Analysis of the characteristic features of each cluster demonstrated a strong association between the water conditions in regions close to the ENP emission source and the cluster membership of the corresponding spatial concentration profiles. In particular, water compositions favoring heteroaggregation between the ENPs and suspended particulate matter resulted in clusters of low variability. These conditions are, therefore, reliable predictors of the eventual fate of the modeled ENPs. The conclusions from this study are also valid for ENP fate in other large river systems. Our results, therefore, shift the focus of future modeling and experimental research of ENP environmental fate to the water characteristic in regions near the expected ENP emission sources. Under conditions favoring heteroaggregation in these regions, the fate of the ENPs can be readily predicted.

Seasonal variation and controlling factors of anaerobic ammonium oxidation in freshwater river sediments in the Taihu Lake region of China

Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) has been recently recognized as an important pathway for the removal of fixed nitrogen (N) from aquatic systems. However, the functions of anammox in freshwater river systems remain uncertain. In this study, we evaluated the occurrence of anammox activity in two rivers in the Taihu Lake region in China during a seasonal survey. Homogenized sediments were incubated with (15)N-labeled NO3(-) and NH4(+) amendments to determine the potential importance of the anammox process relative to canonical denitrification. Production of (29)N2 and (30)N2 in slurries was determined using membrane inlet mass spectrometry. Potential anammox rates in the two river sediments ranged from 0.11±0.07 to 6.79±1.28 μmol N m(-2) h(-1) and the remove of N by anammox accounted for 0.8±0.00% to 10.7±0.03% of total N2 production. Potential anammox rates varied spatially and temporally in the two rivers, with the highest and lowest mean anammox rates appearing during summer and early autumn and during winter, respectively. The variation of the percentage of anammox to total N2 production displayed the same trend with potential anammox rates. Water temperature and NO3(-) content in sediments were the main factors affecting anammox activity. Anammox bacteria were detected in sediment samples using barcode pyrosequencing. The 16S rRNA anammox gene sequences in the river sediments were affiliated with Candidatus Kuenenia, Candidatus Jettenia, and Candidatus Scalindua, among which C. Kuenenia dominated the anammox bacterial communities. Our results confirmed the presence of anammox bacteria but their role is relatively small in removing fixed N from freshwater river systems.
