Spatial distribution, compositional pattern, and source apportionment of colloidal trace metals in the coastal water of Shandong Peninsula, northeastern China

The Shandong Peninsula (SP) is the largest peninsula in China hosting rich economic and agricultural activities. In this study, we investigated the behavior of dissolved Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb and their colloidal phases in the coastal and estuarine areas of SP. Pb and Zn had the highest contamination factors of 0.22-10.15 and 0.90-4.41, respectively. The <1 kDa accounted for 23-57 % of the total dissolved phase. Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb were more likely to bind to 100 kDa-0.45 μm colloids (21-57 %). For colloidal Fe and Cu, the adsorption-release behavior had more significant effects on their dynamics. In contrast, the changes in colloidal Mn, Cd, and Pb were mainly controlled by the combined influence of temperature, dissolved oxygen, and microbial activity. However, the 1-3 kDa Zn exhibited a greater pH-dependent dispersion and was significantly positively correlated with it.

Seasonal dynamics of bacterial community and co-occurrence with eukaryotic phytoplankton in the Pearl River Estuary

In this study, we investigated the taxonomic composition of the bacteria and phytoplankton communities in the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) through Illumina sequencing of the V3-V4 region of the 16 S rRNA gene. Furthermore, their relationships as well as recorded environmental variables were explored by co-occurrence networks. Bacterial community composition was different in two size fractions, as well as along the salinity gradient across two seasons. Free-living (FL) communities were dominated by pico-sized Cyanobacteria (Synechococcus CC9902) while Exiguobacterium, Halomonas and Pseudomonas were predominantly associated with particle-associated (PA) lifestyle, and Cyanobium PCC-6307 exhibited seasonal shifts in lifestyles in different seasons. In wet season, bacterial community composition was characterized by abundance of Cyanobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Bacteroidetes, which were tightly linked with high riverine inflow. While in dry season, Proteobacteria increased in prevalence, especially for Psychrobacter, NOR5/OM60 clade and Pseudomonas, which were thrived in lower water temperature and higher salinity. Moreover, we discovered that differences between PA and FL composition were more significant in the wet season than in the dry season, which may be due to better nutritional conditions of particles (indicated by POC%) in the wet season and then attract more diverse PA populations. Based on the analysis of plastidial 16 S rRNA genes, abundant small-sized mixotrophic phytoplankton (Dinophyceae, Euglenida and Haptophyta) were identified in the PRE. The complexity of co-occurrence network increased from FL to PA fractions in both seasons, which suggested that suspended particles can provide ecological niches for particle-associated colonizers contributing to the maintenance of a more stable community structure. In addition, the majority of phytoplankton species exhibited positive co-occurrences with both other phytoplankton species and bacterial counterparts, indicating the mutual cooperation between phytoplankton assemblages and specific bacterial populations e likely benefited from phytoplankton-derived organic compounds. This study enhances our understanding of the seasonal and spatial dynamics of bacterial communities and their potential relationship with phytoplankton assembly in estuarine waters.

Temperature effects on microbial dissolved organic matter metabolisms: Linking size fractions, fluorescent compositions, and functional groups

This study elucidated the compositional and structural variations of size fractions of microbially-induced dissolved organic matter (DOM) caused by short-term temperature changes (5 to 35 °C), taking riverine DOM as an example. A simple and efficient method combining fractionation-[parallel factor analysis and two-dimensional Fourier-transform infrared correlation spectroscopy (PARAFAC-2D FTIR COS)]-correlation was introduced to link fluorescent DOM components and their structures in terms of surface functional groups. Results indicated that the higher temperature stimulated the decomposition of aromatics (sizes decreased from 10 kDa-0.22 μm to <10 kDa) and the transformation of proteins to humics (with sizes <0.22 μm); while both the higher and lower temperatures inhibited the utilization of larger-sized DOM (>0.22 μm, especially the non-fluorescence part) and synthesis of larger-sized microbial-derived proteins and humics (>0.22 μm), which may result in more smaller-sized (<10 kDa) and refractory aromatics transported from rivers to oceans in the warming future. However, the structure-determined DOM behaviors could be less affected by temperature since the fluorescent proteins and humics revealed similar functional group compositions, such as carboxyl, hydroxyl, carbonyl/aldehyde, carboxylic anhydride, and carboxamide groups. These findings have strong implications for DOM biogeochemistry in future temperature-shock scenarios. The proposed method will support in-depth analyses of structure-regulated processes from a mechanistic perspective.

Characterization of hospital airborne SARS-CoV-2

BACKGROUND

The mechanism for spread of SARS-CoV-2 has been attributed to large particles produced by coughing and sneezing. There is controversy whether smaller airborne particles may transport SARS-CoV-2. Smaller particles, particularly fine particulate matter (≤ 2.5 µm in diameter), can remain airborne for longer periods than larger particles and after inhalation will penetrate deeply into the lungs. Little is known about the size distribution and location of airborne SARS-CoV-2 RNA.

METHODS

As a measure of hospital-related exposure, air samples of three particle sizes (> 10.0 µm, 10.0-2.5 µm, and ≤ 2.5 µm) were collected in a Boston, Massachusetts (USA) hospital from April to May 2020 (N = 90 size-fractionated samples). Locations included outside negative-pressure COVID-19 wards, a hospital ward not directly involved in COVID-19 patient care, and the emergency department.

RESULTS

SARS-CoV-2 RNA was present in 9% of samples and in all size fractions at concentrations of 5 to 51 copies m-3. Locations outside COVID-19 wards had the fewest positive samples. A non-COVID-19 ward had the highest number of positive samples, likely reflecting staff congregation. The probability of a positive sample was positively associated (r = 0.95, p < 0.01) with the number of COVID-19 patients in the hospital. The number of COVID-19 patients in the hospital was positively associated (r = 0.99, p < 0.01) with the number of new daily cases in Massachusetts.

CONCLUSIONS

More frequent detection of positive samples in non-COVID-19 than COVID-19 hospital areas indicates effectiveness of COVID-ward hospital controls in controlling air concentrations and suggests the potential for disease spread in areas without the strictest precautions. The positive associations regarding the probability of a positive sample, COVID-19 cases in the hospital, and cases in Massachusetts suggests that hospital air sample positivity was related to community burden. SARS-CoV-2 RNA with fine particulate matter supports the possibility of airborne transmission over distances greater than six feet. The findings support guidelines that limit exposure to airborne particles including fine particles capable of longer distance transport and greater lung penetration.

Spatially resolved distribution, sources and health risks of heavy metals in size-fractionated road dust from 57 sites across megacity Kolkata, India

This work reports the first assessment of contamination levels, source contributions and health risks associated with heavy metals (HMs) in road dust from Kolkata, the second-most polluted metropolis in India. To this end, samples collected from 57 locations across 6 land-use categories: residential, roadside, traffic, railway, port and industrial areas in the city during 2018 were analyzed for 11 major and trace metals (Ca, Mg, Fe, Al, Mn, Ni, V, Cu, Zn, Cr, Pb) in three size fractions: <75 μm, 75-125 μm and 125-300 μm. Overall, Mn, Zn, Cr, Pb, V, Cu and Ni were enriched in the smallest fraction by factors of 1.2-2.7. Based on metal distribution across land-use categories, crustal dust (Fe, Al, V), construction activities (Ca, Mg), metallurgical processes (Pb), and non-exhaust abrasive emissions from brake, tire and paint wear (Cu, Zn, Cr) were found to be significant. HMs such as Cu, Zn, Cr and Pb were considerably enriched over background levels as suggested by three contamination indices: Enrichment Factor (EF; overall range: 2.4-12.0), Index of Geo-accumulation (I_geo; overall range: 1.1-3.4), and Pollution Index (PI; overall range: 3.1-15.6). Geospatial mapping identified HM contamination hotspots (integrated PI >4) in west-central and northern parts (the older sections) of the city represented by industrial, port, and traffic-congested residential areas. Using positive matrix factorization (PMF), the following sources were apportioned for the three size fractions: crustal dust (48-66%), construction activities (18-20%), vehicular abrasion (7-21%), industrial emissions (5-8%), a Cr-dominated mixed source (6%) and an unassigned source (7%). Finally, health risk assessment in the form of cumulative hazard index (HI) and incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) found that children (mean HI_children: 1.29 and ILCR_children: 2E-04) are comparatively more vulnerable than adults (mean HI_adults: 0.22 and ILCR_adults: 8E-05) to HM exposure, with the ingestion exposure pathway dominating over dermal contact and inhalation.

Effect of a dam on the optical properties of different-sized fractions of dissolved organic matter in a mid-subtropical drinking water source reservoir

The presence of a dam on a river is believed to have a key role in affecting changes in the components of the chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) in reservoirs. However, questions remain about the mechanisms that control these changes. In this study, we used tangential ultrafiltration, fluorescence spectrum and phytoplankton cell density detection to explore the impacts of a dam on the CDOM components in the Shanzai Reservoir, a source of drinking water. The results demonstrated each CDOM size fraction comprised two main components, namely C1 (protein-like substance) and C2 (humic-like substance). The C1 content had a higher value in areas with slow flow than in the normal river channel, while the C2 contents were generally stable in the flow direction. The topography of the reservoir site affected the structure of the CDOM components based on changes in the hydraulic conditions caused by the dam. The variations in the CDOM components, hydraulic parameters and fluorescence indices in the river flow direction indicated that the contribution of the phytoplankton to the CDOM content increased as the distance to the dam decreased, phytoplankton metabolism enhanced C1 content of the 1-10kDa molecular weights range fraction. Further, the contributions of different phytoplankton biomass to C1 proved that the dam changed the hydraulic conditions, had secondary effects on the metabolism of the phytoplankton, and resulted in changes in the structure of the CDOM components.

Framework for assessment and phytoremediation of asbestos-contaminated sites

We examine the feasibility of phytoremediation as an alternative strategy to limit the exposure of asbestos in site with asbestos-containing materials. We collected soils from four locations from two sites-one with naturally occurring asbestos, and another, a superfund site, where asbestos-containing materials were disposed over decades-and performed ecotoxicology tests. We also performed two experiments with crop cultivar and two grasses from serpentine ecotype and cultivar to determined best choice for phytoremediation. Asbestos concentrations in different size fractions of soils varied by orders of magnitude. However, different asbestos concentrations had little effect on germination and root growth. Presence of co-contaminants such as heavy metals and lack of nutrients affected plant growth to different extents, indicating that several of these limiting factors should be considered instead of the primary contaminant of concern. Crop cultivar survived on asbestos-contaminated soil. Grasses from serpentine ecotype did not show higher biomass than the cultivar. Overall, these results showed that soil conditions play a critical role in screening different crop species for phytoremediation and that asbestos concentration has limited to no effect on plant growth. Our study provided a framework for phytoremediation of asbestos-contaminated sites to limit long-term asbestos exposure.

Unravel the hidden protistan diversity: application of blocking primers to suppress PCR amplification of metazoan DNA

Planktonic protists, including both autotroph and heterotroph, have been recognized as a major contributor to primary production and consumers of bacteria, archaea and picophytoplankton. However, the understanding of protistan diversity is typically impeded by the large amount of metazoans when employing universal primers to environmental samples. In this study, we developed 3 blocking primers to inhibit the amplification of metazoan DNA in PCR. First, we optimized the design and concentration of blocking primers by using 2 metazoans and 3 protists in quantitative PCR. No significant difference (q > 0.05) was found in protistan community structure at phylum, family or OTU levels and genetic diversity between samples amplified with and without adding blocking primers, indicating that the blocking primer does not alter the composition of protistan community. An application to samples with a high abundance of metazoans showed that the blocking primer can reduce 42.1-72.4% of metazoan sequences, resulting the retrieval of a higher protistan richness and diversity. The use of the blocking primer helped to identify protistan community composition from a large size fraction, which is usually dominated by metazoans. Protistan community from the small (0.2-10 μm) and large (> 10 μm) size fractions exhibited a low similarity of 36.6% and shared 14.7% OTUs. About 63.8% of the OTUs were unique to the large fraction. Species from groups, such as Lepidodinium, Warnowia, Kareniaceae, Torodiniales, Phaeocystis, Chrysochromulina and Chrysophyceae, were enriched in the large fraction, indicating that they could be largely underestimated in studies that exclude the large-sized cells. Blocking primers are a promising tool to increase the efficiency for the characterization of protistan diversity in aquatic planktonic ecosystems.

Effects of molecular size fraction of DOM on photodegradation of aqueous methylmercury

This study investigated the photodegradation kinetics of MeHg in the presence of various size fractions of dissolved organic matter (DOM) with MW < 3.5 kDa, 3.5 < MW < 10 kDa, and MW > 10 kDa. The DOM fraction with MW < 3.5 kDa was most effective in MeHg photodegradation. Increasing UV intensity resulted in the increase of photodegradation rate of the MeHg in all size of DOM fractions. Higher rates of MeHg degradation was observed at higher pH. For the portion of MW < 3.5 kDa, the photodegradation rate of MeHg increased with increasing DOM concentration, indicating that radicals such as singlet oxygen (¹O₂) radicals can be effectively produced by DOM. At higher portion of MW > 3.5 kDa, the inhibition of MeHg degradation was observed due to the effect of DOM photo-attenuation. Our result indicates that radical mediated reaction is the main mechanism of photodegradation of MeHg especially in the presence of MW < 3.5 kDa. Our results imply that the smaller molecular weight fraction (MW < 3.5 kDa) of DOM mainly increased the photodegradation rate of MeHg.

Triboelectric separation technology for removing inorganics from non-metallic fraction of waste printed circuit boards: Influence of size fraction and process optimization

Removing inorganics from non-metallic fraction (NMF) of waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs) is an effective mean to improve its usability. The effect of size fraction on the triboelectric separation of NMF of WPCBs was investigated in a lab triboelectric separation system and the separation process was optimized in this paper. The elements distribution in raw NMF collected from typical WPCBs recycling plant and each size fraction obtained by sieving were analyzed by X-ray fluorescence (XRF). The results show that the main inorganic elements in NMF are P, Ba, Mn, Sb, Ti, Pb, Zn, Sn, Mg, Fe, Ca, Cu, Al and Si. The inorganic content of each size fraction increased with the size decreasing. The metal elements are mainly distributed in -0.2mm size fraction, and concentrated in middle product of triboelectric separation. The loss on ignition (LOI) of positive product and negative product is higher than that of the middle product for the -0.355mm size fraction, while the LOI presents gradually increasing trend from negative to positive plate for the +0.355mm size fraction. Based on the separation results and mineralogical characterizations of each size fraction of NMF, the pretreatment process including several mineral processing operations was added before triboelectric separation and better separation result was obtained.

Phytoremediation of particulate matter from indoor air by Chlorophytum comosum L. plants

Higher plants, including spider plants, are able to take up and degrade/detoxify various pollutants in the air. Although nearly 120 plant species have been tested for indoor air phytoremediation, to the best of the authors' knowledge, data on particulate matter (PM) phytoremediation from indoor air are not yet available in literature. This work determined the ability of spider plants to take up PM, one of the most harmful pollutants to man, in the indoor air of five rooms housing different activities (a dental clinic, a perfume-bottling room, a suburban house, an apartment and an office). It was found that spider plants accumulate PM of both categories (water washable and trapped in waxes) and in all three size fractions determined and that the amount differed depending on the type of activity taking place in the particular rooms ranging from 13.62 to 19.79 μg/cm2. The amount of wax deposited on the leaves of plants grown in these rooms also differed (34.46-72.97 μg/cm2). The results of this study also demonstrated that the amount of PM accumulated on aluminium plates was always significantly lower than that accumulated on the plants' leaves, showing that more than simply gravity forces are involved in PM accumulation on leaf blades.

Investigating Dechlorane Plus (DP) distribution and isomer specific adsorption behavior in size fractionated marine sediments

In this study, Dechlorane Plus (DP) concentrations were analyzed in marine sediments (depth: ~10 cm) from two Korean industrial bays. Two sediments were fractionated into 5 sizes by using gravitational split-flow thin fractionation technique and DP distribution was investigated in different particle size fractions. Elevated DP levels in surface sediments were observed at the site closest to land and industrial area. The highest concentrations of DP were detected in the finest grain-size (<10 μm, 451.2 and 149.9 pg/g dry weight for the two bays). The fraction of anti-DP to the total DP (fanti) in the two fractionated samples increased with reduced grain-size and significantly correlated with organic carbon content (OC), which can be caused by preferential adsorption of anti-DP or higher biodegradation rates of syn-DP in the fine particles. To provide insight into such mechanism, simulated experiments were conducted using activated charcarbon (ACC) to adsorb DP dissolved in methanol and molecular descriptors of both isomers were estimated using Gaussian 03. The adsorption results revealed that syn-DP was preferentially adsorbed by ACC, suggesting syn-DP is more hydrophobic than anti-DP. The preferential adsorption of syn-DP by ACC also supported the hypothesis that the enrichment of anti-DP was more likely due to preferential biodegradation of syn-DP in the sediment. Molecular characterization of anti-DP and syn-DP showed that syn-DP had a higher dipole moment, slightly larger Van der Waals volume, but smaller maximal diameter, which might explain its higher uptake rate in biota.

Titanium distribution in swimming pool water is dominated by dissolved species

The increased use of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (nano-TiO2) in consumer products such as sunscreen has raised concerns about their possible risk to human and environmental health. In this work, we report the occurrence, size fractionation and behavior of titanium (Ti) in a children's swimming pool. Size-fractionated samples were analyzed for Ti using ICP-MS. Total titanium concentrations ([Ti]) in the pool water ranged between 21 μg/L and 60 μg/L and increased throughout the 101-day sampling period while [Ti] in tap water remained relatively constant. The majority of [Ti] was found in the dissolved phase (<1 kDa), with only a minor fraction of total [Ti] being considered either particulate or microparticulate. Simple models suggest that evaporation may account for the observed variation in [Ti], while sunscreen may be a relevant source of particulate and microparticule Ti. Compared to diet, incidental ingestion of nano-Ti from swimming pool water is minimal.
