Steroid metabolites as overlooked emerging contaminants: Insights from multimedia partitioning and source-sink simulation in an estuarine environment

Steroids have been attracting global attention given potential carcinogenic and endocrine-disrupting effects, yet the environmental status of steroids, especially their metabolites, in estuarine environment remain largely unexplored. This study investigated 31 steroids and metabolites in suspended particulate matter (SPM), water phase and sediments of the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) during the dry and wet seasons to elucidate their spatiotemporal patterning, partitioning behavior, and environmental fate. The results showed that natural steroids predominated in SPM and sediments while the metabolites predominated in water. The spatial distribution of steroids and metabolites varied seasonally, with hydrophobicity and environmental factors influencing phase partitioning in the estuary. Furthermore, a natural steroid, progesterone (P) could serve as a trustworthy chemical indicator to estimate the concentrations of steroids and metabolites in the PRE. Importantly, the mass budget of P was estimated using an improved multi-box mass balance model, revealing that outflow to the South China Sea was the primary sink of P in water (∼87%) and degradation was the primary sink of P in sediments (∼68%) of the PRE. Overall, this study offers insightful information about the distribution and environmental fate of steroids and metabolites in estuarine environment, with implications for future management strategies.

Enhancing photosynthesis and yield in rice with improved N use efficiency

The success of the dwarf breeding of rice, called the Green Revolution in Asia, resulted from increased source and sink capacities depending on significant inputs of N fertilizer. Although N fertilization is essential for increasing cereal production, large inputs of N application have significantly impacted the environment. Transgenic rice overproducing Rubisco has demonstrated increased yields with improved N use efficiency for increasing biomass production under high N fertilization in a paddy field. A large grain cultivar, Akita 63, had a high yield by enlarging the sink capacity without photosynthesis improvement. However, source capacity strongly limited the yield potential under high N fertilization. Enhancing photosynthesis is important for further increasing the yield of current high-yielding cultivars. Developing innovative rice plants with both high photosynthesis and large sink capacity is essential.

Mass balance of nine trace elements in two karst catchments in southwest China

High geological background levels of trace elements (TEs) and high population density in the karst areas of southwest China have imposed environmental pressure on the fragile ecosystems in this region. Understanding the mass budget of TEs, especially the toxic ones, is of great importance to sustain future developments. This study investigates the mass balance and fate of nine TEs (cadmium, arsenic, lead, chromium, copper, nickel, zinc, thallium, and antimony) in two karst catchments (Huilong and Chenqi) in southwest China through estimation of their mass budgets in throughfall, open field precipitation, total suspended particulate matter (TSP), litterfall, fertilization, harvested crops, surface runoff, and underground runoff. The estimated net fluxes are positive, indicating a source region, for four elements (Cu, Cr, Ni, and Tl) and negative, indicating a sink region, for five elements (As, Cd, Pb, Sb, and Zn) in both catchments. The net fluxes for the nine elements in Chenqi catchment are within a relatively small range (2.6, 2.0, 1.6, 0.6, -0.05, -0.5, -0.5, -2.9, and -3.3 mg m^-2 yr^-1 for Cu, Ni, Cr, Tl, Cd, Zn, Sb, Pb, and As, respectively), but in Huilong catchment in quite a large range (15.5, 6.0, 1.0, 0.8, -0.3, -0.9, -4.5, -7.5, and -8.7 mg m^-2 yr^-1 for Tl, Cr, Ni, Cu, Cd, Sb, As, Pb, and Zn, respectively). Rainfall (12.3%-66.2%) and litterfall (18.4%-81.3%) are the major input flux pathways, while crops harvest (16%-99%) is the major output flux pathway for the TEs in both catchments, indicating that the fate of TEs is shaped by both natural factors such as precipitation and litterfall and human activities such as fertilization and crop harvesting in these forestland-farmland compound karst catchments. Results from this study suggest that restoring forests from low-yield sloping farmlands will be useful for controlling TEs pollution in these fragile karst regions with high geological background TEs.

Mobilization mechanisms and toxicity risk of sediment trace metals (Cu, Zn, Ni, and Pb) based on diffusive gradients in thin films: A case study in the Xizhi River basin, South China

Identifying the mobilization mechanisms and predicting the potential toxicity risk of metals in sediment are essential to contamination remediation in river basins. In this study, a sequential extraction procedure and diffusive gradients in thin film (DGT) were employed to investigate the mobilization mechanisms, release characteristics, and potential toxicity of sediment metals (Cu, Zn, Ni, and Pb). Acid-soluble and reducible fractions were the dominant geochemical species of Cu, Zn, Ni, and Pb in sediments, indicating high mobility potentials for these metals under reducing conditions. In summer, the sediment acted as a source of water-column metals due to mineralization of organic matter and reductive dissolution of iron/manganese oxides in surface sediments, and the formation of metal sulfide precipitates markedly lowered DGT-labile metal concentrations with depth, while localized sulfide oxidation was responsible for fluctuating labile metal concentrations. Stable distribution patterns of labile metals resulted from the weak reducing conditions of sediment in winter, when the sediment shifted to a metal sink. The interstitial water criteria toxicity unit (IWCTU), calculated from DGT measurements, indicated no and low-to-moderate toxic risk of sediments in summer and winter seasons, respectively, and Pb was the major contributor to the predicted toxic effects in the soft interstitial water.

Evolution of sedimentary organic matter in a small river estuary after the typhoon process: A case study of Quanzhou Bay

Extreme weather events occur frequently under global warming scenarios and have an important impact on the global carbon cycle. Compared to large rivers, small rivers are more sensitive to extreme weather events (such as typhoons). This paper reports the results of a study carried out in the Quanzhou Bay to explore the evolution of small river estuarine sedimentary organic matter after typhoon process using measurements of the grain-size, total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN) and δ¹³C of surface sediment samples collected 2-3 days and a month, respectively, after typhoon Matmo landing in 2014. The results show that the contents of TOC and TN in the sediments, which gradually decrease from the estuary to the outer sea of Quanzhou Bay, decreased approximately 13% and 16%, respectively, a month later compared with 2-3 days after typhoon landing. The significant decrease occurred in the Jinjiang River estuary and along the South Channel of Quanzhou Bay, while the North Channel and Luoyangjiang River estuary retained high levels of TOC and TN. The results of δ¹³C values and TOC/TN ratios show that the organic matter in the sediment of the Quanzhou Bay was a mixture derived from C₃ terrestrial plants and marine algae. The terrestrial organic matter was mainly deposited in the Jinjiang River estuary 2-3 days after typhoon landing and then spread along the tidal channel to the outer sea a month later. It indicates that the hydrodynamic forces stirred sedimentary organic matters that were input and settled during typhoon, and transported later along the North and South Channel to the outer sea. Some of those organic matters were accumulated in the North Channel during the transport process. The results provide significant meaning for the carbon cycle and material flux study on the coastal and margin seas.

Marine litter as a vector for non-native species: What we need to know

Plastic debris and other floating materials endanger severely marine ecosystems. When they carry attached biota they can be a cause of biological invasions whose extent and intensity is not known yet. This article focuses on knowledge gaps and research priorities needed for, first, understanding and then preventing dispersal of alien invasive species attached to marine litter.

Arsenic distribution in waters and its geochemical behavior in sediment of Mahanadi estuary in India

Distribution of arsenic in the marine environment is associated with its biogeochemical behavior. Indeed, very few studies have been conducted along the seasonal cycle to show its non-conservative behavior in the tropical estuary. The Mahanadi River, one of the major tropical rivers in the peninsular India, drains densely populated and industrialized region of Paradeep port. Over this 1-year study, the variations of inorganic arsenic were examined along the salinity gradient of the Mahanadi estuary, with the aim to provide some insights into the mechanisms that control arsenic concentrations and behavior under estuarine mixing. Arsenic in the estuary was derived from both natural and anthropogenic sources, and it displayed partial removal from the water in the mixing zone. Results of geo-accumulation index indicated that sediments were uncontaminated and they acted as a sink for arsenic. The diffusive fluxes from water to sediment were estimated to be 9.05 μg m(-2) day(-1) at Chaumohona, 9.83 μg m(-2) day(-1) at Kaudia, and 11.85 μg m(-2) day(-1) at Neherubunglow. The findings of the study suggest that both the removal of arsenic by biogeochemical processes and its diffusive transport from water to sediment are of major importance for both the non-conservative behavior of arsenic in the estuary and its export to the coastal water.

Reassessment of an Arabidopsis cell wall invertase inhibitor AtCIF1 reveals its role in seed germination and early seedling growth

In higher plants, cell wall invertase (CWI) and vacuolar invertase (VI) are recognized as essential players in sugar metabolism and sugar signaling, thereby affecting source-sink interactions, plant development and responses to environmental cues. CWI and VI expression levels are transcriptionally controlled; however, both enzymes are also subject to posttranslational control by invertase inhibitor proteins. The physiological significances of inhibitor proteins during seed germination and early seedling development are not yet fully understood. Here, we demonstrate that the inhibitor isoform AtCIF1 impacted on seed germination and early seedling growth in Arabidopsis. The primary target of AtCIF1 was shown to be localized to the apoplast after expressing an AtCIF1 YFP-fusion construct in tobacco epidermis and transgenic Arabidopsis root. The analysis of expression patterns showed that AtCWI1 was co-expressed spatiotemporally with AtCIF1 within the early germinating seeds. Seed germination was observed to be accelerated independently of exogenous abscisic acid (ABA) in the AtCIF1 loss-of-function mutant cif1-1. This effect coincided with a drastic increase of CWI activity in cif1-1 mutant seeds by 24 h after the onset of germination, both in vitro and in planta. Accordingly, quantification of sugar content showed that hexose levels were significantly boosted in germinating seeds of the cif1-1 mutant. Further investigation of AtCIF1 overexpressors in Arabidopsis revealed a markedly suppressed CWI activity as well as delayed seed germination. Thus, we conclude that the posttranslational modulation of CWI activity by AtCIF1 helps to orchestrate seed germination and early seedling growth via fine-tuning sucrose hydrolysis and, possibly, sugar signaling.
