Fuzzy Modeling Development for Lettuce Plants Irrigated with Magnetically Treated Water

Due to the worldwide water supply crisis, sustainable strategies are required for a better use of this resource. The use of magnetic water has been shown to have potential for improving irrigation efficacy. However, a lack of modelling methods that correspond to the experimental results and minimize error is observed. This study aimed to estimate the replacement rates of magnetic water provided by irrigation for lettuce production using a mathematical model based on fuzzy logic and to compare multiple polynomial regression analysis and the fuzzy model. A greenhouse study was conducted with lettuce using two types of water, magnetic water (MW) and conventional water (CW), and five irrigation levels (25, 50, 75, 100 and 125%) of crop evapotranspiration. Plant samples for biometric lettuce were taken at 14, 21, 28 and 35 days after transplanting. The data were analyzed via multiple polynomial regression and fuzzy mathematical modeling, followed by an inference of the models and a comparison between the methods. The highest biometric values for lettuce were observed when irrigated with MW during the different phenological stage evaluated. The fuzzy model provided a more exact adjustment when compared to the multiple polynomial regressions.

Modelling of Blood Lactate Time-Courses During Exercise and/or the Subsequent Recovery: Limitations and Few Perspectives

Because lactate is an important metabolic intermediate and a signalling molecule between/within cells/organs, it appears essential to be able to describe the kinetics of this central molecule, during and/or after physical exercise. The present study aimed to confront three models and their approaches [Freund and co-workers (F&co), Beneke and co-workers (B&co), and Quittmann and co-workers (Q&co)] to investigate the lactate exchange (γ₁) and removal (γ₂) abilities (min⁻¹) during and/or after exercise. Nine healthy male subjects performed 3- and 6-min easy, moderate, and heavy exercise. Blood lactate concentration (BLC) was measured every 5 s over the entire period of exercise and recovery. Approaches differ depending on the domain in which the model is applied: considering exercise and part of the recovery (B&co and Q&co) or the entire period of recovery (F&co). The different approaches result in differing γ₁ and γ₂ values. Model fitting is closer to the experimental values following the method (model and approach) of F&co. Complementary analyses show that consideration of (i) exercise drastically impairs the quality of model fitting and therefore the γ₁ and γ₂ values and (ii) the entire period of recovery considerably improves the quality of fits and therefore of the γ₁ and γ₂ values. We conclude that (i) it is neither realistic nor reliable to take into account exercise and recovery in the same model and (ii) the longer the period of recovery studied, the better the quality of the γ₁ and γ₂ values.

Gestational weight gain growth charts adapted to Japanese pregnancies using a Bayesian approach in a longitudinal study: The Japan Environment and Children's Study

Background Tracking gestational weight gain (GWG) during pregnancy makes it possible to optimize pregnancy outcomes and GWG growth curves are well suitable for this purpose. The GWG guidelines for Japanese were revised in 2021. However, currently, there are no GWG growth curves to guide women on how to gain weight to meet these guidelines.Methods Using data on 96,631 live births from the Japan Environment and Children's Study (JECS), we created descriptive GWG percentile curves estimated the trajectory of GWG required to meet the GWG guidelines stratified by pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) For both analyses, Bayesian mixed models with restricted cubic splines adjusted for maternal characteristics were used.Results GWG curves substantially differed by pre-pregnancy BMI, and were higher among multiparas and those with lower maternal age and with no previous disease. We estimated that underweight, normal weight, overweight and obese women who gain 8.4 to 11.1 kg, 6.4 to 9.1 kg, 3.8 to 6.5 kg, and <1.9 kg at 30 weeks of gestation are on the trajectory to reach the new guidelines at 40 weeks of gestation.Conclusions We provide GWG percentiles curves for Japanese women as well as GWG trajectory curves to meet the new GWG recommendations. These results may help pregnant women monitor weight during their pregnancy.

A Bayesian multiple imputation approach to bivariate functional data with missing components

Existing missing data methods for functional data mainly focus on reconstructing missing measurements along a single function-a univariate functional data setting. Motivated by a renal study, we focus on a bivariate functional data setting, where each sampling unit is a collection of two distinct component functions, one of which may be missing. Specifically, we propose a Bayesian multiple imputation approach based on a bivariate functional latent factor model that exploits the joint changing patterns of the component functions to allow accurate and stable imputation of one component given the other. We further extend the framework to address multilevel bivariate functional data with missing components by modeling and exploiting inter-component and intra-subject correlations. We develop a Gibbs sampling algorithm that simultaneously generates multiple imputations of missing component functions and posterior samples of model parameters. For multilevel bivariate functional data, a partially collapsed Gibbs sampler is implemented to improve computational efficiency. Our simulation study demonstrates that our methods outperform other competing methods for imputing missing components of bivariate functional data under various designs and missingness rates. The motivating renal study aims to investigate the distribution and pharmacokinetic properties of baseline and post-furosemide renogram curves that provide further insights into the underlying mechanism of renal obstruction, with post-furosemide renogram curves missing for some subjects. We apply the proposed methods to impute missing post-furosemide renogram curves and obtain more refined insights.

A Hierarchical Curve-Based Approach to the Analysis of Manifold Data

One of the data structures generated by medical imaging technology is high resolution point clouds representing anatomical surfaces. Stereophotogrammetry and laser scanning are two widely available sources of this kind of data. A standardised surface representation is required to provide a meaningful correspondence across different images as a basis for statistical analysis. Point locations with anatomical definitions, referred to as landmarks, have been the traditional approach. Landmarks can also be taken as the starting point for more general surface representations, often using templates which are warped on to an observed surface by matching landmark positions and subsequent local adjustment of the surface. The aim of the present paper is to provide a new approach which places anatomical curves at the heart of the surface representation and its analysis. Curves provide intermediate structures which capture the principal features of the manifold (surface) of interest through its ridges and valleys. As landmarks are often available these are used as anchoring points, but surface curvature information is the principal guide in estimating the curve locations. The surface patches between these curves are relatively flat and can be represented in a standardised manner by appropriate surface transects to give a complete surface model. This new approach does not require the use of a template, reference sample or any external information to guide the method and, when compared with a surface based approach, the estimation of curves is shown to have improved performance. In addition, examples involving applications to mussel shells and human faces show that the analysis of curve information can deliver more targeted and effective insight than the use of full surface information.

Physical Growth and Body Adiposity Curves in Students of the Maule Region (Chile)

Objectives: Physical growth and body adiposity patterns provide relevant information to infer the nutritional and health status of students. Our objectives were (a) to compare the variables of body adiposity and physical growth of Chilean children and adolescents with data from the CDC-2012 and international studies, and (b) to develop regional reference curves to evaluate growth and body adiposity. Methods: 8,261 children and adolescents were studied. We evaluated the weight, height, and waist circumference (WC). The Body Mass Index (BMI) was calculated. Their physical growth and body adiposity were compared with the CDC-2012 references as well as with other international references. Percentile curves for weight, height, BMI, and WC were constructed with the LMS method. Results: The Chilean students showed reduced weight and height during adolescence when compared with the CDC-2012 reference. During early ages, the BMI for the Chilean sample was lower while at advanced ages, the WC values were greater in comparison to the CDC-2012 reference. Graphic comparisons with international studies indicated that Chilean students weighed more at all ages. However, height was slightly greater until age 14 for males and age 11 for females. Body adiposity (BMI and WC) for the Chilean students was slightly higher at early ages while at later ages, adiposity values were relatively similar for both sexes. Conclusions: Discrepancies were observed between the physical growth and body adiposity trajectories and the American CDC-2012 references and the international studies. The proposed percentiles for weight, height, BMI, and WC for each age and sex may be useful for health sciences professionals and researchers.

National curves of foetal growth in singleton foetuses of Greek origin

BACKGROUND

Foetal growth monitoring is an essential component of prenatal care with postnatal impact. The aim of the study was to construct reference ranges for foetal biometric parameters in Greek foetuses and to compare them with previously published models.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Measurements from 1200 Greek foetuses were used to construct normal curves for biparietal diameter (BPD), occipitofrontal diameter (OFD), head circumference (HC), abdominal circumference (AC), femoral length (FL) and the BPD/FL ratio according to the methodology described by Royston and Wright (1998). The model was validated in a second group of 1200 different foetuses using analysis of the corresponding standardized residuals (z-scores). The z-scores which were derived by our model were compared to those calculated using previously published models from other populations.

RESULTS

BPD, OFD, HC, AC, FL and the BPD/FL ratio are accurately described by simple quadratic equations (R(2) > 0·96 for most of the parameters tested). Statistically significant differences were observed for most of the z-scores when our models were compared to previously published models. Less than 10% of our foetuses were < 5th or > 95th centile of the latter models. About 10% of our foetuses were > 95th centile for FL and HC when the INTERGROWTH-21st formulas were used.

CONCLUSION

We present national foetal biometric references. Using charts from other populations (including INTERGROWTH-21st) may be unrepresentative of local populations and lead to misclassification of foetal growth status.

Systematic Review of the Methodological Quality of Studies Aimed at Creating Gestational Weight Gain Charts

A range of adverse outcomes is associated with insufficient and excessive maternal weight gain in pregnancy, but there is no consensus regarding what constitutes optimal gestational weight gain (GWG). Differences in the methodological quality of GWG studies may explain the varying chart recommendations. The goal of this systematic review was to evaluate the methodological quality of studies that aimed to create GWG charts by scoring them against a set of predefined, independently agreed-upon criteria. These criteria were divided into 3 domains: study design (12 criteria), statistical methods (7 criteria), and reporting methods (4 criteria). The criteria were broken down further into items, and studies were assigned a quality score (QS) based on these criteria. For each item, studies were scored as either high (score = 0) or low (score = 1) risk of bias; a high QS correlated with a low risk of bias. The maximum possible QS was 34. The systematic search identified 12 eligible studies involving 2,268,556 women from 9 countries; their QSs ranged from 9 (26%) to 29 (85%) (median, 18; 53%). The most common sources for bias were found in study designs (i.e., not prospective); assessments of prepregnancy weight and gestational age; descriptions of weighing protocols; sample size calculations; and the multiple measurements taken at each visit. There is wide variation in the methodological quality of GWG studies constructing charts. High-quality studies are needed to guide future clinical recommendations. We recommend the following main requirements for future studies: prospective design, reliable evaluation of prepregnancy weight and gestational age, detailed description of measurement procedures and protocols, description of sample-size calculation, and the creation of smooth centile charts or z scores.

The definitions of three-dimensional landmarks on the human face: an interdisciplinary view

The analysis of shape is a key part of anatomical research and in the large majority of cases landmarks provide a standard starting point. However, while the technology of image capture has developed rapidly and in particular three‐dimensional imaging is widely available, the definitions of anatomical landmarks remain rooted in their two‐dimensional origins. In the important case of the human face, standard definitions often require careful orientation of the subject. This paper considers the definitions of facial landmarks from an interdisciplinary perspective, including biological and clinical motivations, issues associated with imaging and subsequent analysis, and the mathematical definition of surface shape using differential geometry. This last perspective provides a route to definitions of landmarks based on surface curvature, often making use of ridge and valley curves, which is genuinely three‐dimensional and is independent of orientation. Specific definitions based on curvature are proposed. These are evaluated, along with traditional definitions, in a study that uses a hierarchical (random effects) model to estimate the error variation that is present at several different levels within the image capture process. The estimates of variation at these different levels are of interest in their own right but, in addition, evidence is provided that variation is reduced at the observer level when the new landmark definitions are used.
