Mechanical bioeffects of acoustic droplet vaporization in vessel-mimicking phantoms

This study investigated the mechanical bioeffects exerted by acoustic droplet vaporization (ADV) under different experimental conditions using vessel phantoms with a 200-μm inner diameter but different stiffness for imitating the microvasculature in various tumors. High-speed microscopy, passive cavitation detection, and ultrasound attenuation measurement were conducted to determine the morphological characteristics of vascular damage and clarify the mechanisms by which the damage was initiated and developed. The results show that phantom erosion was initiated under successive ultrasound exposure (2 MHz, 3 cycles) at above 8-MPa peak negative pressures (PNPs) when ADV occurred with inertial cavitation (IC), producing lesions whose morphological characteristics were dependent on the amount of vaporized droplets. Slight injury occurred at droplet concentrations below (2.6±0.2)×10(6) droplets/mL, forming shallow and rugged surfaces on both sides of the vessel walls. Increasing the droplet concentration to up to (2.6±0.2)×10(7) droplets/mL gradually suppressed the damage on the distal wall, and turned the rugged surface on the proximal wall into tunnels rapidly elongating in the direction opposite to ultrasound propagation. Increasing the PNP did not increase the maximum tunnel depth after the ADV efficiency reached a plateau (about 71.6±2.7% at 10 MPa). Increasing the pulse duration effectively increased the maximum tunnel depth to more than 10 times the diameter of the vessel even though there was no marked enhancement in IC dose. It can be inferred that substantial bubble generation in single ADV events may simultaneously distort the acoustic pressure distribution. The backward ultrasound reinforcement and forward ultrasound shielding relative to the direction of wave propagation augment the propensity of backward erosion. The results of the present work provide information that is valuable for the prevention or utilization of ADV-mediated mechanical bioeffects in clinical applications.

Effects of NOx on the volatility of secondary organic aerosol from isoprene photooxidation

The effects of NOx on the volatility of the secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formed from isoprene photooxidation are investigated in environmental chamber experiments. Two types of experiments are performed. In HO2-dominant experiments, organic peroxy radicals (RO2) primarily react with HO2. In mixed experiments, RO2 reacts through multiple pathways, including with NO, NO2, and HO2. The volatility and oxidation state of isoprene SOA are sensitive to and exhibit a nonlinear dependence on NOx levels. Depending on the NOx levels, the SOA formed in mixed experiments can be of similar or lower volatility compared to that formed in HO2-dominant experiments. The dependence of SOA yield, volatility, and oxidation state on the NOx level likely arises from gas-phase RO2 chemistry and succeeding particle-phase oligomerization reactions. The NOx level also plays a strong role in SOA aging. While the volatility of SOA in mixed experiments does not change substantially over time, SOA becomes less volatile and more oxidized as oxidation progresses in HO2-dominant experiments.

Comparison of the disinfection by-product formation potential of treated waters exposed to chlorine and monochloramine

The formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs) from chlorination and monochloramination of treated drinking waters was determined. Samples were collected after treatment at 11 water treatment works but before exposure to chlorine or monochloramine. Formation potential tests were carried out to determine the DBPs formed by chlorination and monochloramination. DBPs measured were trihalomethanes (THMs), haloacetic acids (HAAs), halonitromethanes (HNMs), haloacetonitriles (HANs), haloaldehydes (HAs), haloketones (HKs) and iodo-THMs (i-THMs). All waters had the potential to form significant levels of all the DBPs measured. Compared to chlorine, monochloramination generally resulted in lower concentrations of DBPs with the exception of 1,1-dichloropropanone. The concentrations of THMs correlated well with the HAAs formed. The impact of bromine on the speciation of the DBPs was determined. The literature findings that higher bromide levels lead to higher concentrations of brominated DBPS were confirmed.

Investigation of neutron radiation effects on polyclonal antibodies (IgG) and fluorescein dye for astrobiological applications

Detecting life in the Solar System is one of the great challenges of new upcoming space missions. Biochips have been proposed as a way to detect organic matter on extraterrestrial objects. A biochip is a miniaturized device composed of biologically sensitive systems, such as antibodies, which are immobilized on a slide. In the case of in situ measurements, the main concern is to ensure the survival of the antibodies under space radiation. Our recent computing simulation of cosmic ray interactions with the martian environment shows that neutrons are one of the dominant species at soil level. Therefore, we have chosen, in a first approach, to study antibody resistance to neutrons by performing irradiation experiments at the Applications Interdisciplinaires des Faisceaux d'Ions en Région Aquitaine (AIFIRA) platform, a French ion beam facility at the Centre d'Etudes Nucléaires de Bordeaux-Gradignan in Bordeaux. Antibodies and fluorescent dyes, freeze-dried and in buffer solution, were irradiated with 0.6 MeV and 6 MeV neutrons. Sample analyses demonstrated that, in the conditions tested, antibody recognition capability and fluorescence dye intensity are not affected by the neutrons.

Alkaline solubilization and microwave irradiation as a combined sludge disintegration and minimization method

Commonly used pretreatment method of alkaline solubilization (using NaOH) and a relatively new technology of microwave (MW) irradiation (160 degrees C) were combined as a pretreatment method of waste activated sludge (WAS) in this study. First alkaline and MW pretreatment methods were examined separately, then their combination for different conditions was investigated in terms of their effect on COD solubilization, turbidity and capillary suction time (CST). For combined pretreatments, soluble COD to total COD ratio (SCOD/TCOD) of WAS increased from 0.005 (control) to 0.18, 0.27, 0.34 and 0.37 for combined methods of MW and pH-10, 11, 12 and 12.5, respectively. Deteriorated dewaterability due to alkaline pretreatment was also improved due to the incorporation of MW irradiation. Further, with small scale batch anaerobic reactors, pH-10, pH-12, MW (alone), MW+pH-10 and MW+pH-12 pretreated WAS samples were anaerobically digested. Highest total gas and methane productions were achieved with MW+pH-12 pretreatment with 16.3% and 18.9% improvements over control reactor, respectively. Finally the performance of MW+pH-12 pretreatment was examined with 2L anaerobic semi-continuous reactors for 92 days and compared to that of the control reactors. These reactors were operated at an SRT of 15 days. After steady state, 43.5% and 55% improvements were obtained in respective daily total gas and methane productions. TS, VS and TCOD reductions were improved by 24.9%, 35.4% and 30.3%, respectively based on a relative calculation with respect to control reactors. This way combined alkaline-microwave treatment proved to be an effective sludge minimization method. Pretreated digested sludge had 22% improved dewaterability than unpretreated digested sludge. Higher SCOD and NH(3)-N concentrations were measured in the pretreated digested sludge supernatant; however, PO(4)-P concentration did not increase much.

The photodegradation and modeling of a typical NAPL trichloroethene, by monochromatic UV irradiations

In this study, the photodegradation of a typical nonaqueous phase liquid (NAPL)-trichloroethene (TCE) by ultraviolet irradiation was investigated. The decay of NAPL-TCE was studied in a RPR-200 Rayonet photochemical reactor, at three different monochromatic UV lamps (254, 300, and 350 nm). Among the three UV wavelengths used, the highest photodecay rate was obtained at 254 nm. The effect of the initial NAPL dosage was also analyzed to determine the photodecay of NAPL-TCE in batch experiments by ultraviolet irradiation at preselected wavelengths. The direct photolysis of NAPL-TCE followed two-stage pseudo first-order decay kinetics. The photodegradation rates of TCE were found to decrease with the increment of NAPL dosage. It is interesting to find that the NAPL dosage is critical to determine the process performance due to the NAPL size or cage effect, which will control the diffusion of TCE/intermediates between NAPL and aqueous phases and therefore the overall reaction rates. Mathematical models were developed for the prediction of the two-stage photodegradation, in which the remaining fraction of TCE (C/C0) in the system becomes predictable.

Evaluation of continuous mesophilic anaerobic sludge digestion after high temperature microwave pretreatment

Effect of microwave pretreatment (MW) high temperature (175 degrees C) and MW intensity to waste activated sludge digested with acclimatized inoculum in single- and dual-stage semi-continuous mesophilic anaerobic digesters at different sludge retention times (SRTs) (20, 10 and 5 days) were investigated. MW pretreatment led to similar sludge stabilization at low SRTs (5 and 10 days). Although lowering MW intensity slightly improved sludge solubilization, it had a negative effect on digestion at low SRTs. Single-stage digesters with MW pretreatment surpass dual-stage digesters performances.

Efficiency of clay--TiO2 nanocomposites on the photocatalytic elimination of a model hydrophobic air pollutant

Clay-supported TiO2 photocatalysts can potentially improve the performance of air treatment technologies via enhanced adsorption and reactivity of target volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In this study, a benchtop photocatalytic flow reactor was used to evaluate the efficiency of hectorite-TiO2 and kaolinite-TiO2, two novel composite materials synthesized in our laboratory. Toluene, a model hydrophobic VOC and a common indoor air pollutant, was introduced in the air stream at realistic concentrations, and reacted under UVA (lamda(max) = 365 nm) or UVC (lamda(max) = 254 nm) irradiation. The UVC lamp generated secondary emission at 185 nm, leading to the formation of ozone and other short-lived reactive species. Performance of clay-Ti02 composites was compared with that of pure TiO2 (Degussa P25), and with UV irradiation in the absence of photocatalyst under identical conditions. Films of clay-TiO2 composites and of P25 were prepared by a dip-coating method on the surface of Raschig rings, which were placed inside the flow reactor. An upstream toluene concentration of approximately 170 ppbv was generated by diluting a constant flow of toluene vapor from a diffusion source with dry air, or with humid air at 10, 33, and 66% relative humidity (RH). Toluene concentrations were determined by collecting Tenax-TA sorbent tubes downstream of the reactor, with subsequent thermal desorption--GC/MS analysis. The fraction of toluene removed, %R, and the reaction rate, Tr, were calculated for each experimental condition from the concentrations measured with and without UV irradiation. Use of UVC light (UV/TiO2/O3) led to overall higher reactivity, which can be partially attributed to the contribution of gas phase reactions by short-lived radical species. When the reaction rate was normalized to the light irradiance, Tr/Ilamda,the UV/TiO2 reaction under UVA irradiation was more efficient for samples with a higher content of TiO2 (P25 and Hecto-TiO2), but notfor Kao-TiO2. In all cases, reaction rates peaked at 10% RH, with Tr values between 10 and 50% higherthan those measured under dry air. However, a net inhibition was observed as RH increased to 33% and 66%, indicating that water molecules competed effectively with toluene for reactive surface sites and limited the overall photocatalytic conversion. Compared to P25, inhibition by coadsorbed water was less significant for Kao-TiO2 samples, but was more dramatic for Hecto-TiO2 due to the high water uptake capacity of hectorite.

Photocatalytic surface reactions on indoor wall paint

The reduction of indoor air pollutants by air cleaning systems has received considerable interest, and a number of techniques are now available. So far, the method of photocatalysis was mainly applied by use of titanium dioxide (TiO2) in flow reactors under UV light of high intensity. Nowadays, indoor wall paints are equipped with modified TiO2 to work as a catalyst under indoor daylight or artificial light. In chamber experiments carried out under indoor related conditions itwas shown thatthe method works for nitrogen dioxide with air exchange and for formaldehyde without air exchange at high concentrations. In further experiments with volatile organic compounds (VOCs), a small effect was found for terpenoids with high kOH rate constants. For other VOCs and carbon monoxide there was no degradation at all or the surface acted as a reversible sink. Secondary emissions from the reaction of paint constituents were observed on exposure to light. From the results it is concluded that recipes of photocatalytic wall paints need to be optimized for better efficiency under indoor conditions.

Continuous analysis of dissolved gaseous mercury and mercury volatilization in the upper St. Lawrence River: exploring temporal relationships and UV attenuation

The formation and volatilization of dissolved gaseous mercury (DGM) is an important mechanism by which freshwaters may naturally reduce their mercury burden. Continuous analysis of surface water for diurnal trends in DGM concentration (ranging from 0 to 60.4 pg L(-1); n=613), mercury volatilization (ranging from 0.2 to 1.1 ng m(-2) h(-1); n=584), and a suite of physical and chemical measurements were performed during a 68 h period in the St. Lawrence River near Cornwall (Ontario, Canada) to examine the temporal relationships governing mercury volatilization. No lag-time was observed between net radiation and OGM concentrations (highest cross-correlation of 0.817), thus supporting previous research indicating faster photoreduction kinetics in rivers as compared to lakes. A significant lag-time (55-145 min; maximum correlation = 0.625) was observed between DGM formation and mercury volatilization, which is similar to surface water Eddy diffusion times of 42-132 min previously measured in the St. Lawrence River. A depth-integrated DGM model was developed using the diffuse integrated vertical attenuation coefficients for UVA and UVB (K(dI UVA) = 1.45 m(-1) K(dI UVB)= 3.20 m(-1)) Low attenuation of solar radiation was attributed to low concentrations of dissolved organic carbon (mean = 2.58 mg L(-1) and particulate organic carbon (mean = 0.58 mg L(-1) in the St. Lawrence River. The depth-integrated DGM model developed found that the top 0.3 m of the water column accounted for only 26% of the total depth-integrated DGM. A comparison with volatilization data indicated that a large portion (76% or 10.5 ng m(-2) of the maximum depth-integrated DGM (13.8 ng m(-2))is volatilized over a 24 h period. Therefore, at least 50% of all DGM volatilized was produced at depths below 0.3 m. These results highlight the importance of solar attenuation in regulating DGM formation with depth. The results also demonstrate both the fast formation of DGM in rivers and the importance of understanding DGM dynamics with depth as opposed to surface waters.

Effects of Ultraviolet Irradiation on Chemical and Sensory Properties of Goat Milk

Sensory and chemical consequences of treating goat milk using an UV fluid processor were assessed. Milk was exposed to UV for a cumulative exposure time of 18 s and targeted UV dose of 15.8 +/- 1.6 mJ/cm2. A triangle test revealed differences between the odor of raw milk and UV irradiated milk. Oxidation and hydrolytic rancidity was measured by thiobarbituric acid reactive substances and acid degree values (ADV). As UV dose increased, there was an increase in thiobarbituric acid reactive substance values and ADV of the milk samples. A separate set of samples were processed using the fluid processor but with no UV exposure to see if lipase activity and agitation from pumping contributed to the differences in odor. The ADV increased at the same rate as samples exposed to UV; however, sensory studies indicated that the increase of free fatty acids was not enough to cause detectable differences in the odor of milk. Solid phase microextraction and gas chromatography were utilized for the analysis of volatile compounds as a result of UV exposure. There was an increase in the concentration of pentanal, hexanal, and heptanal (relative to raw goat milk) after as little as 1.3 mJ/cm2 UV dose. Ultraviolet irradiation at the wavelength 254 nm produced changes in the sensory and chemical properties of fluid goat milk.

Photodecomposition of volatile organic compounds using TiO2 nanoparticles

This study examined the photodecomposition of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) using TiO2 catalyst fabricated by the Submerged Arc Nanoparticle Synthesis System (SANSS). TiO2 catalyst was employed to decompose volatile organic compounds and compare with Degussa-P25 TiO2 in terms of decomposition efficiency. In the electric discharge manufacturing process, a Ti bar, applied as the electrode, was melted and vaporized under high temperature. The vaporized Ti powders were then rapidly quenched under low-temperature and low-pressure conditions in deionized water, thus nucleating and forming nanocrystalline powders uniformly dispersed in the base solvent. The average diameter of the TiO2 nanoparticles was 20 nm. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed that the nanoparticles in the deionized water were Anatase type TiO2. It was found that gaseous toluene exposed to UV irradiation produced intermediates that were even harder to decompose. After 60-min photocomposition, Degussa-P25 TiO2 reduced the concentration of gaseous toluene to 8.18% while the concentration after decomposition by SANSS TiO2 catalyst dropped to 0.35%. Under UV irradiation at 253.7 +/- 184.9 nm, TiO2 prepared by SANSS can produce strong chemical debonding energy, thus showing great efficiency, superior to that of Degussa-P25 TiO2, in decomposing gaseous toluene and its intermediates.

Laser-induced bubbles in living cells

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES

Laser-activated micro- and nano-bubbles (LAB) in cells may be used as universal and sensitive non-toxic probes for measuring functional properties of individual cells.

STUDY DESIGN/MATERIALS AND METHODS

Such bubbles can be detected and imaged by microscopy and flow cytometry. LABs in living blood and tumor cells were induced by pulsed (532 nm, 10 nanoseconds) laser radiation and detected by the thermal lens optical method.

RESULTS

Registered lifetime and maximal diameter of the studied LABs varied within the ranges of 0.02-10 microseconds and 0.44-100 microm, respectively. LAB parameters, thresholds and probabilities, were found to depend upon the physiological state of cells. Specificity and sensitivity of LAB cytometry were increased due to the use of light-absorbing nanoparticles conjugated to specific monoclonal antibodies.

CONCLUSIONS

LAB were found to be the universal phenomena that can be used for sensitive and non-invasive monitoring of any individual cell, intact or nanoparticle-treated.

Increasing UV-B radiation at the earth's surface and potential effects on aqueous mercury cycling and toxicity

In the past two decades, a great deal of attention has been paid to the environmental fate of mercury (Hg), and this is exemplified by the growing number of international conferences devoted uniquely to Hg cycling and its impacts on ecosystem functions and life. This interest in the biogeochemistry of Hg has resulted in a significant improvement of our understanding of its impact on the environment and human health. However, both past and current research, have been primarily oriented toward the study of direct impact of anthropogenic activities on Hg cycling. Besides a few indirect effects such as the increase in Hg methylation observed in acid-rain impacted aquatic systems or the reported enhanced Hg bioaccumulation in newly flooded water reservoirs; changes in Hg transformations/fluxes that may be related to global change have received little attention. A case in point is the depletion of stratospheric ozone and the resulting increase in solar UV-radiation reaching the Earth. This review and critical discussion suggest that increasing UV-B radiation at earth's surface could have a significant and complex impact on Hg cycling including effects on Hg volatilization (photo-reduction), solubilization (photo-oxidation), methyl-Hg demethylation, and Hg methylation. Therefore, this paper is written to provoke discussions, and more importantly, to stimulate research on potential impacts of incoming solar UV-radiation on global Hg fluxes and any toxicity aspects of Hg that may become exacerbated by UV-radiation.

Interfacial effect of extremely low frequency electromagnetic fields (EM-ELF) on the vaporization step of carbon dioxide from aqueous solutions of body simulated fluid (SBF)

Spontaneous processes in an aqueous solution of body simulated fluid (SBF) were monitored in closed vessel for a period of 1 month at 310 K, at atm pressure, and initial pH of 7.2, both with and without exposure to a square pulsed extremely low frequency electromagnetic fields (EM-ELF) of 250 microT, repeated at 75 Hz. The most important findings are that the SBF surface tension (gamma), evaluated under the EM-ELF field, is lower than the corresponding value measured without EM-ELF at any time. Furthermore, the pH of the exposed SBF is always more basic than that of the unexposed solution. As a consequence, when the EM-ELF is applied, calcium phosphate salts do not precipitate from the SBF solution for a period as long as 30 days. Behind all these experimental evidences there is only one mechanism: the vaporisation from the SBF-air interface of the CO(2)(aq) dissolved into the aqueous electrolyte solution. Thermodynamic analysis of these results establish that, at any given time, the difference, Delta, between the measured surface tensions with and without EM-ELF applied, gives the work of the electromagnetic forces to change the extent at which the CO(2)(aq) adsorbs at the liquid-air interface. It has been demonstrated that the work supply per second and per unit of area by the electromagnetic forces, 3.73 x 10(-10) mJ/s cm(2), is very near to the experimental slope in the plot Delta vs. t 1.7 x 10(-10) mJ/s cm(2). This leads to the conclusion that the EM-ELF fields have an interfacial effect on the concentration value of the CO(2) (aq) at the SBF-air interface. Because of that, the EM-ELF field is enhancing the CO(2) vaporisation rate; thus any other steps, which are a consequence of this mechanism, are changing. These results allow explanation of previous experiments concerning the precipitation of calcium carbonate from flowing hydrogen carbonate aqueous solution in the temperature range 353-373 K at a pressure of 0.1 MPa under the effect of static magnetic fields.

Managing selenium-contaminated agricultural drainage water by the integrated on-farm drainage management system: role of selenium volatilization

The Integrated on-Farm Drainage Management (IFDM) system was designed to dispose of selenium (Se)-contaminated agricultural irrigation drainage water through the sequential reuse of saline drainage water to grow crops having different salt tolerance. This study quantified the extent of biological volatilization in Se removal from the IFDM system located in the western San Joaquin Valley, California. Selenium volatilization from selected treatment areas, including pickleweed (Salicornia bigelovii Torr.), saltgrass (Distichlis spicata L.), bare soil, and the solar evaporator, was monitored biweekly using an open-flow sampling chamber system during the pickleweed growing season from February to September 1997, and monthly from September 1997 to January 1998. Biological volatilization from the pickleweed section removed 62.0 +/- 3.6 mg Se m(-2) y(-1) to the atmosphere, which was 5.5-fold greater than the Se accumulated in pickleweed tissues (i.e., phytoextraction). The total Se removed by volatilization from the bare soil, saltgrass, and the solar evaporator was 16.7 +/- 1.1, 4.8 +/- 0.3, and 4.3 +/- 0.9mg Se m(-2) y(-1), respectively. Selenium removal by volatilization accounted for 6.5% of the annual total Se input (957.7mg Sem(-2) y(-1)) in the pickleweed field, and about 1% of the total Se input (432.7 mg Se m(-2) y(-1)) in the solar evaporator. We concluded that Se volatilization under naturally occurring field conditions represented a relatively minor, but environmentally important pathway of Se removal from the IFDM system.

Marine aerosol formation from biogenic iodine emissions

The formation of marine aerosols and cloud condensation nuclei--from which marine clouds originate--depends ultimately on the availability of new, nanometre-scale particles in the marine boundary layer. Because marine aerosols and clouds scatter incoming radiation and contribute a cooling effect to the Earth's radiation budget, new particle production is important in climate regulation. It has been suggested that sulphuric acid derived from the oxidation of dimethyl sulphide is responsible for the production of marine aerosols and cloud condensation nuclei. It was accordingly proposed that algae producing dimethyl sulphide play a role in climate regulation, but this has been difficult to prove and, consequently, the processes controlling marine particle formation remains largely undetermined. Here, using smog chamber experiments under coastal atmospheric conditions, we demonstrate that new particles can form from condensable iodine-containing vapours, which are the photolysis products of biogenic iodocarbons emitted from marine algae. Moreover, we illustrate, using aerosol formation models, that concentrations of condensable iodine-containing vapours over the open ocean are sufficient to influence marine particle formation. We suggest therefore that marine iodocarbon emissions have a potentially significant effect on global radiative forcing.

Analyses of volatile transformation products from additives in gamma-irradiated polyethylene packaging

Thermal desorption, followed by gas chromatography (GC) with mass spectrometry (MS) detection, has been found to allow the rapid identification of volatile products resulting from the gamma-irradiation of stabilized, high density polyethylene packaging and pure stabilizers. The stabilizers were tris(2,4-di-tert.butylphenyl) phosphite, octadecyl beta-(2,6-di-tert.butylphenol)-propionate and 2,4-di-tert.butylphenol, the latter resulting from phosphite hydrolysis. Thermal desorption indicated the formation and release of tert.butylbenzenes, such as 1,3-di-tert.butylbenzene upon gamma-irradiation of the HDPE. From a comparison of the products from gamma-irradiation of additive-free polyethylene, of various pure stabilizers and of related compounds, the tert.butylbenzenes were confirmed to result from the irradiation of the phosphite stabilizer and its phosphate conversion product. Thermal desorption off-line, in which volatiles released by a sample are trapped in sorbents for subsequent desorption in the heated GC inlet, is found to be a fast, extremely sensitive method that can be used to guide and supplement analyses of compounds extracted by foodstuffs.

Electrochemical potentials during radiofrequency energy delivery: a new method to control catheter ablation of arrhythmias

AIMS

Thermal injury of subendocardial tissue leads to a release of electrolytes and free radicals from the intracellular site creating a change in electrochemical potential (eP) between the distal and the proximal catheter tip electrodes. The aim of the study was to verify the detection of ablation-induced release of electrolytes and free radicals and to assess the suitability of control-line energy delivery at ablation by measuring eP.

METHODS AND RESULTS

In vitro tests under constant flow conditions were performed in a 101 bath of physiological saline solution or bovine blood. Endomyocardial preparations of fresh bovine hearts were used. Closed-loop temperature-controlled, irrigated and closed-loop eP-controlled ablations were performed. In vivo animal investigations were performed in six anaesthetized and ventilated pigs. The existence of the eP was established in the tank model and was confirmed in animal investigations. High correlations were found between eP and catheter tip temperature (r=0.87) and between maximum eP and induced lesion size (r=0.85). Also a high correlation (r=0.85, P<0.001) was found between eP and lesion volume.

CONCLUSIONS

Control of energy delivery during RF ablation by the measurement of eP is feasible. In comparison with temperature controlled RF ablation, ablation guided by eP-measurement revealed a superior correlation with induced lesion size. Especially during cooled radiofrequency catheter ablation eP is the only parameter for control of energy delivery.

Monitoring and biomonitoring of surface ozone in Florence, Italy

An ambient air study was conducted in the city of Florence, Italy, in the summer 1996. Tropospheric ozone was continuously monitored with automatic analyzers in three stations, two located in the urban area and one in the hilly surroundings (Settignano). A biomonitoring campaign based on the tobacco cv. Bel-W3 plants was performed in the same area. The highest values were constantly recorded in the Settignano station. The highest 1-hour mean recorded was 197 nl/l; the accumulated exposure over a threshold of 40 nl/l (AOT40) was well above the critical levels standards for protection of the vegetation. A consistent temporal variation was observed and July proved to be the month with the highest ozone levels. Cumulative frequency distribution of ozone maximum daily concentrations exhibited a good fitting to log-normality. No 'week-end' effect was observed. Biomonitoring data were in good agreement with chemico-physical ones.

Does non-ionizing radiant energy affect determination of the evaporation rate by the gradient method?

A study was performed to investigate whether measurements of the evaporation rate from the skin of newborn infants by the gradient method are affected by the presence of non-ionizing radiation from phototherapy equipment or a radiant heater. The evaporation rate was measured experimentally with the measuring sensors either exposed to or protected from non-ionizing radiation. Either blue light (phototherapy) or infrared light (radiant heater) was used; in the former case the evaporation rate was measured from a beaker of water covered with a semipermeable membrane, and in the latter case from the hand of an adult subject, aluminium foil or with the measuring probe in the air. No adverse effect on the determinations of the evaporation rate was found in the presence of blue light. Infrared radiation caused an error of 0.8 g/m2h when the radiant heater was set at its highest effect level or when the ambient humidity was high. At low and moderate levels the observed evaporation rate was not affected. It is concluded that when clinical measurements are made from the skin of newborn infants nursed under a radiant heater, the evaporation rate can appropriately be determined by the gradient method.
