Construction of Medusa-Like Adhesive Carbon Nanotube Array Induced by Deformation of Alumina Sheets

To change the binary structure of nanotube and nanotube array in vertically aligned carbon nanotube arrays, this work deposits regularly arranged amorphous alumina sheets on the classical array growth catalyst (10 nm-thick alumina and 2 nm-thick iron) and obtains an array similar to the Medusa head. Subsequent experiments revealed that these alumina sheets show both unstable and stable qualities during growth: unstable in that they thermally deform and change their newly discovered characteristics of blocking carbon source diffusion, which regulates the nanotube growth order in specific areas; stable in that they withstand the deformation caused by heat and sequential growth of nanotubes, serving as a substrate and buffer layer for Medusa's hair, i.e., nanotube bundles on the array surface. Their combination splits this binary structure into a tertiary architecture consisting of nanotubes, nanotube bundles, and the array spanning nano-, micro-, and milli-meter. Benefiting from this structure, this array exhibits a unique near-isotropic adhesion characteristic compared to existing reports and outperforms classical and patterned arrays with the same classical catalyst and growth conditions.

Basic Sites on Alumina with Preadsorbed Ethanol and Ammonia-An IR Study

The adsorption of ethanol and ammonia changes the basic properties of alumina, and new basic sites are created. Ethanol reacts with surface Al-OH groups, forming ethoxy group Al-O-C2H5. The substitution of Al-OH by Al-O-C2H5 increases the negative charge of neighbouring oxygen atoms, and they became sufficiently basic to react with adsorbed CO2 forming carbonate species CO32-. These carbonates were found to be monodentate and bidentate species. Preadsorption of ammonia also increases the basicity of alumina, but the mechanism is different than for ethanol adsorption. Adsorbed ammonia interacts with surface Lewis acid sites being three-coordinated aluminium atoms. This interaction is accompanied by an electron transfer from ammonia molecules to surface sites, and increases the basicity of the neighbouring oxygens, which can react with the absorbed CO2. The carbonate species formed are polydentate ones.

Tailoring the aluminum nanocrystal surface oxide for all-aluminum-based antenna-reactor plasmonic photocatalysts

Aluminum nanocrystals (AlNCs) are of increasing interest as sustainable, earth-abundant nanoparticles for visible wavelength plasmonics and as versatile nanoantennas for energy-efficient plasmonic photocatalysis. Here, we show that annealing AlNCs under various gases and thermal conditions induces substantial, systematic changes in their surface oxide, modifying crystalline phase, surface morphology, density, and defect type and concentration. Tailoring the surface oxide properties enables AlNCs to function as all-aluminum-based antenna-reactor plasmonic photocatalysts, with the modified surface oxides providing varying reactivities and selectivities for several chemical reactions.

Aluminium in dermatology - Inside story of an innocuous metal

Aluminium, the third most abundant element in the earth's crust, was long considered virtually innocuous to humans but has gained importance in the recent past. Aluminium is ubiquitous in the environment, with various sources of exposure like cosmetics, the food industry, occupational industries, the medical field, transport and electronics. Aluminium finds its utility in various aspects of dermatology as an effective haemostatic agent, anti-perspirant and astringent. Aluminium has a pivotal role to play in wound healing, calciphylaxis, photodynamic therapy and vaccine immunotherapy with diagnostic importance in Finn chamber patch testing and confocal microscopy. The metal also finds significance in cosmetic procedures like microdermabrasion and as an Nd:YAG laser component. It is important to explore the allergic properties of aluminium, as in contact dermatitis and vaccine granulomas. The controversial role of aluminium in breast cancer and breast cysts also needs to be evaluated by further studies.

Polishing Mechanism of CMP 4H-SiC Crystal Substrate (0001) Si Surface Based on an Alumina (Al2O3) Abrasive

Silicon carbide, a third-generation semiconductor material, is widely used in the creation of high-power devices. In this article, we systematically study the influence of three crucial parameters on the polishing rate of a silicon carbide surface using orthogonal experiments. By optimizing the parameters of chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) through experiments, we determined that the material removal rate (MRR) is 1.2 μm/h and the surface roughness (Ra) is 0.093 nm. Analysis of the relevant polishing mechanism revealed that manganese dioxide formed during the polishing process. Finally, due to the electrostatic effect of the two, MnO2 adsorbed on the Al2O3, which explains the polishing mechanism of Al2O3 in the slurry.

Novel Energetic Co-Reactant for Thermal Oxide Atomic Layer Deposition: The Impact of Plasma-Activated Water on Al2O3 Film Growth

In the presented study, a novel approach for thermal atomic layer deposition (ALD) of Al2O3 thin films using plasma-activated water (PAW) as a co-reactant, replacing traditionally employed deionized (DI) water, is introduced. Utilizing ex situ PAW achieves up to a 16.4% increase in the growth per cycle (GPC) of Al2O3 films, consistent with results from plasma-enhanced atomic layer deposition (PEALD). Time-resolved mass spectrometry (TRMS) revealed disparities in CH4 partial pressures between TMA reactions with DI water and PAW, with PAW demonstrating enhanced reactivity. Reactive oxygen species (ROS), namely H2O2 and O3, are posited to activate Si(100) substrate sites, thereby improving GPC and film quality. Specifically, Al2O3 films grown with PAW pH = 3.1 displayed optimal stoichiometry, reduced carbon content, and an expanded bandgap. This study thus establishes "PAW-ALD" as a descriptor for this ALD variation and highlights the significance of comprehensive assessments of PAW in ALD processes.

A Narrative Review on Polycrystalline Ceramics for Dental Applications and Proposed Update of a Classification System

Dental zirconias have been broadly utilized in dentistry due to their high mechanical properties and biocompatibility. Although initially introduced in dentistry as an infrastructure material, the high rate of technical complications related to veneered porcelain has led to significant efforts to improve the optical properties of dental zirconias, allowing for its monolithic indication. Modifications in the composition, processing methods/parameters, and the increase in the yttrium content and cubic phase have been presented as viable options to improve zirconias' translucency. However, concerns regarding the hydrothermal stability of partially stabilized zirconia and the trade-off observed between optical and mechanical properties resulting from the increased cubic content remain issues of concern. While the significant developments in polycrystalline ceramics have led to a wide diversity of zirconia materials with different compositions, properties, and clinical indications, the implementation of strong, esthetic, and sufficiently stable materials for long-span fixed dental prostheses has not been completely achieved. Alternatives, including advanced polycrystalline composites, functionally graded structures, and nanosized zirconia, have been proposed as promising pathways to obtain high-strength, hydrothermally stable biomaterials. Considering the evolution of zirconia ceramics in dentistry, this manuscript aims to present a critical perspective as well as an update to previous classifications of dental restorative ceramics, focusing on polycrystalline ceramics, their properties, indications, and performance.

Band offsets and point-defect charges of the aluminum and hafnium oxides in contact with the Cu(In,Ga)Se2chalcopyrite

Surface passivation of CuInSe2(CIS) and related Cu(In,Ga)Se2(CIGS) chalcopyrite materials by depositing selected dielectric layers has been a major research activity aiming to reduce interface recombination and increase the electrical efficiency of chalcopyrite-based thin-film solar cells. The present study reports calculations based on density-functional theory andab-initiothermodynamics that examine the origin of field-effect passivation from alumina and hafnia two wide-gap, predominantly ionic insulators that have exhibited promising passivation qualities in silicon-based microelectronics. The source of fixed charges within the bulk lattices of both oxides was studied by determining the thermodynamically most favorable charge states of their native defects within the admissible ranges of the metal and oxygen chemical potentials. An alignment of the electron bands based on the branch-point energies was performed in order to correctly place the defect charge-transition levels with respect to the band edges of the CIS and the CIGS materials. The trends and predictions of the sign of the fixed charges in either insulator were obtained as a function of temperature, oxygen partial pressure and Fermi-level position inside the band gaps of CIS and CIGS. The findings are discussed in connection with existing experimental studies that extracted the magnitude and polarity of the fixed charges of both alumina and hafnia by analyzing the electrical properties of the CIGS/insulator interfaces.

Ladder-like Poly(methacryloxypropyl) silsesquioxane-Al2O3-polybutadiene Flexible Nanocomposites with High Thermal Conductivity

Ladder-like poly(methacryloxypropyl)-silsesquioxanes (LPMASQ) are photocurable Si-based gels characterized by a double-stranded structure that ensures superior thermal stability and mechanical properties than common organic polymers. In this work, these attractive features were exploited to produce, in combination with alumina nanoparticles (NPs), both unmodified and functionalized with methacryloxypropyl-trimethoxysilane (MPTMS), LPMASQ/Al2O3 composites displaying remarkable thermal conductivity. Additionally, we combined LPMASQ with polybutadiene (PB) to produce hybrid nanocomposites with the addition of functionalized Al2O3 NPs. The materials underwent thermal stability, structural, and morphological evaluations via thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDXS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Both blending PB with LPMASQ and surface functionalization of nanoparticles proved to be effective strategies for incorporating a higher ceramic filler amount in the matrices, resulting in significant increases in thermal conductivity. Specifically, a 113.6% increase in comparison to the bare matrix was achieved at relatively low filler content (11.2 vol%) in the presence of 40 wt% LPMASQ. Results highlight the potential of ladder-like silsesquioxanes in the field of thermally conductive polymers and their applications in heat dissipation for flexible electronic devices.

Direct Air Capture of CO2 Using Amine/Alumina Sorbents at Cold Temperature

Rising CO2 emissions are responsible for increasing global temperatures causing climate change. Significant efforts are underway to develop amine-based sorbents to directly capture CO2 from air (called direct air capture (DAC)) to combat the effects of climate change. However, the sorbents' performances have usually been evaluated at ambient temperatures (25 °C) or higher, most often under dry conditions. A significant portion of the natural environment where DAC plants can be deployed experiences temperatures below 25 °C, and ambient air always contains some humidity. In this study, we assess the CO2 adsorption behavior of amine (poly(ethyleneimine) (PEI) and tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA)) impregnated into porous alumina at ambient (25 °C) and cold temperatures (-20 °C) under dry and humid conditions. CO2 adsorption capacities at 25 °C and 400 ppm CO2 are highest for 40 wt% TEPA-incorporated γ-Al2O3 samples (1.8 mmol CO2/g sorbent), while 40 wt % PEI-impregnated γ-Al2O3 samples exhibit moderate uptakes (0.9 mmol g-1). CO2 capacities for both PEI- and TEPA-incorporated γ-Al2O3 samples decrease with decreasing amine content and temperatures. The 40 and 20 wt % TEPA sorbents show the best performance at -20 °C under dry conditions (1.6 and 1.1 mmol g-1, respectively). Both the TEPA samples also exhibit stable and high working capacities (0.9 and 1.2 mmol g-1) across 10 cycles of adsorption-desorption (adsorption at -20 °C and desorption conducted at 60 °C). Introducing moisture (70% RH at -20 and 25 °C) improves the CO2 capacity of the amine-impregnated sorbents at both temperatures. The 40 wt% PEI, 40 wt % TEPA, and 20 wt% TEPA samples show good CO2 uptakes at both temperatures. The results presented here indicate that γ-Al2O3 impregnated with PEI and TEPA are potential materials for DAC at ambient and cold conditions, with further opportunities to optimize these materials for the scalable deployment of DAC plants at different environmental conditions.

Zirconia Dental Implants: A Closer Look at Surface Condition and Intrinsic Composition by SEM-EDX

Modern dental implantology is based on a set of more or less related first-order parameters, such as the implant surface and the intrinsic composition of the material. For decades, implant manufacturers have focused on the research and development of the ideal material combined with an optimal surface finish to ensure the success and durability of their product. However, brands do not always communicate transparently about the nature of the products they market. Thus, this study aims to compare the surface finishes and intrinsic composition of three zirconia implants from three major brands. To do so, cross-sections of the apical part of the implants to be analyzed were made with a micro-cutting machine. Samples of each implant of a 4 to 6 mm thickness were obtained. Each was analyzed by a tactile profilometer and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Compositional measurements were performed by X-ray energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The findings revealed a significant use of aluminum as a chemical substitute by manufacturers. In addition, some manufacturers do not mention the presence of this element in their implants. However, by addressing these issues and striving to improve transparency and safety standards, manufacturers have the opportunity to provide even more reliable products to patients.

Thermally Conductive and Electrically Insulating Epoxy Composites Filled with Network-like Alumina In Situ Coated Graphene

With the rapid development of the electronics industry, there is a growing demand for packaging materials that possess both high thermal conductivity (TC) and low electrical conductivity (EC). However, traditional insulating fillers such as boron nitride, aluminum nitride, and alumina (Al2O3) have relatively low intrinsic TC. When graphene, which exhibits both superhigh TC and EC, is used as a filler to fill epoxy resin, the TC of blends can be much higher than that of blends containing more traditional fillers. However, the high EC of graphene limits its application in cases where electrical insulation is required. To address this challenge, a method for coating graphene sheets with an in situ grown Al2O3 layer has been proposed for the fabrication of epoxy-based composites with both high TC and low EC. In the presence of a cationic surfactant, a dense Al2O3 layer with a network structure can be formed on the surface of graphene sheets. When the total content of Al2O3 and graphene mixed filler reached 30 wt%, the TC of the epoxy composite reached 0.97 W m-1 K-1, while the EC remained above 1011 Ω·cm. Finite element simulations accurately predicted TC and EC values in accordance with experimental results. This material, with its combination of high TC and good insulation properties, exhibits excellent potential for microelectronic packaging applications.

The Influence of Alumina Airborne-Particle Abrasion with Various Sizes of Alumina Particles on the Phase Transformation and Fracture Resistance of Zirconia-Based Dental Ceramics

The surface of zirconia-based dental ceramic restorations require preparation prior to adhesive cementation. The purpose of this study was to assess the influence of airborne-particle abrasion with different sizes of alumina particles (50 μm, 110 μm, or 250 μm) on the mechanical strength of zirconia-based ceramics' frameworks and on the extent of phase transformations. A fracture resistance test was performed. The central surface of the frameworks was subjected to a load [N]. The identification and quantitative determination of the crystalline phase present in the zirconia specimens was assessed using X-ray diffraction. The Kruskal-Wallis one-way analysis of variance was used to establish significance (α = 0.05). The fracture resistance of zirconia-based frameworks significantly increases with an increase in the size of alumina particles used for air abrasion: 715.5 N for 250 μm alumina particles, 661.1 N for 110 μm, 608.7 N for 50 μm and the lowest for the untreated specimens (364.2 N). The X-ray diffraction analysis showed an increase in the monoclinic phase content after air abrasion: 50 μm alumina particles-26%, 110 μm-40%, 250 μm-56%, and no treatment-none. Air abrasion of the zirconia-based dental ceramics' surface with alumina particles increases the fracture resistance of zirconia copings and the monoclinic phase volume. This increase is strongly related to the alumina particle size.

Mechanical and Biological Characterization of PMMA/Al2O3 Composites for Dental Implant Abutments

The mechanical and biological behaviors of PMMA/Al2O3 composites incorporating 30 wt.%, 40 wt.%, and 50 wt.% of Al2O3 were thoroughly characterized as regards to their possible application in implant-supported prostheses. The Al2O3 particles accounted for an increase in the flexural modulus of PMMA. The highest value was recorded for the composite containing 40 wt.% Al2O3 (4.50 GPa), which was about 18% higher than that of its unfilled counterpart (3.86 GPa). The Al2O3 particles caused a decrease in the flexural strength of the composites, due to the presence of filler aggregates and voids, though it was still satisfactory for the intended application. The roughness (Ra) and water contact angle had the same trend, ranging from 1.94 µm and 77.2° for unfilled PMMA to 2.45 µm and 105.8° for the composite containing the highest alumina loading, respectively, hence influencing both the protein adsorption and cell adhesion. No cytotoxic effects were found, confirming that all the specimens are biocompatible and capable of sustaining cell growth and proliferation, without remarkable differences at 24 and 48 h. Finally, Al2O3 was able to cause strong cell responses (cell orientation), thus guiding the tissue formation in contact with the composite itself and not enhancing its osteoconductive properties, supporting the PMMA composite's usage in the envisaged application.

MAO- and Borate-Free Activating Supports for Group 4 Metallocene and Post-Metallocene Catalysts of α-Olefin Polymerization and Oligomerization

Modern industry of advanced polyolefins extensively uses Group 4 metallocene and post-metallocene catalysts. High-throughput polyolefin technologies demand the use of heterogeneous catalysts with a given particle size and morphology, high thermal stability, and controlled productivity. Conventional Group 4 metal single-site heterogeneous catalysts require the use of high-cost methylalumoxane (MAO) or perfluoroaryl borate activators. However, a number of inorganic phases, containing highly acidic Lewis and Brønsted sites, are able to activate Group 4 metal pre-catalysts using low-cost and affordable alkylaluminums. In the present review, we gathered comprehensive information on MAO- and borate-free activating supports of different types and discussed the surface nature and chemistry of these phases, examples of their use in the polymerization of ethylene and α-olefins, and prospects of the further development for applications in the polyolefin industry.

The Role of Lewis Acid Sites in γ-Al2 O3 Oligomerization

Olefin oligomerization by γ-Al2 O3 has recently been reported, and it was suggested that Lewis acid sites are catalytic. The goal of this study is to determine the number of active sites per gram of alumina to confirm that Lewis acid sites are indeed catalytic. Addition of an inorganic Sr oxide base resulted in a linear decrease in the propylene oligomerization conversion at loadings up to 0.3 wt %; while, there is a >95 % loss in conversion above 1 wt % Sr. Additionally, there was a linear decrease in the intensity of the Lewis acid peaks of absorbed pyridine in the IR spectra with an increase in Sr loading, which correlates with the loss in propylene conversion, suggesting that Lewis acid sites are catalytic. Characterization of the Sr structure by XAS and STEM indicates that single Sr2+ ions are bound to the γ-Al2 O3 surface and poison one catalytic site per Sr ion. The maximum loading needed to poison all catalytic sites, assuming uniform surface coverage, was ∼0.4 wt % Sr, giving an acid site density of ∼0.2 sites per nm2 of γ-Al2 O3 , or approximately 3 % of the alumina surface.

Atomic-scale modelling of organic matter in soil: adsorption of organic molecules and biopolymers on the hydroxylated α-Al2O3 (0001) surface

Binding of organic molecules on oxide mineral surfaces is a key process which impacts the fertility and stability of soils. Aluminium oxide and hydroxide minerals are known to strongly bind organic matter. To understand the nature and strength of sorption of organic carbon in soil, we investigated the binding of small organic molecules and larger polysaccharide biomolecules on α-Al₂O₃ (corundum). We modelled the hydroxylated α-Al₂O₃ (0001) surface, since these minerals' surfaces are hydroxylated in the natural soil environment. Adsorption was modelled using density functional theory (DFT) with empirical dispersion correction. Small organic molecules (alcohol, amine, amide, ester and carboxylic acid) were found to adsorb on the hydroxylated surface by forming multiple hydrogen bonds with the surface, with carboxylic acid as the most favourable adsorbate. A possible route from hydrogen-bonded to covalently bonded adsorbates was demonstrated, through co-adsorption of the acid adsorbate and a hydroxyl group to a surface aluminium atom. Then we modelled the adsorption of biopolymers, fragments of polysaccharides which naturally occur in soil: cellulose, chitin, chitosan and pectin. These biopolymers were able to adopt a large variety of hydrogen-bonded adsorption configurations. Cellulose, pectin and chitosan could adsorb particularly strongly, and therefore are likely to be stable in soil. Synthesis, Characterization, and NH3-SCR Catalytic Performance of Fe-Modified MCM-36 Intercalated with Various Pillars

Two series of MCM-36 zeolites intercalated with various pillars and modified with iron were synthesized, analyzed with respect to their physicochemical properties, and tested as catalysts for the NH₃-SCR process. It was found that the characteristic MWW morphology of MCM-36 can be obtained successfully using silica, alumina, and iron oxide as pillars. Additionally, one-pot synthesis of the material with iron resulted in the incorporation of monomeric Fe³⁺ species into the framework positions. The results of catalytic tests revealed that the one-pot synthesized sample intercalated with silica and alumina was the most efficient catalyst of NO reduction, exhibiting ca. 100% activity at 250 °C. The outstanding performance of the material was attributed to the abundance of Lewis acid sites and the beneficial influence of alumina on the distribution of iron species in the zeolite. In contrast, the active centers originating from the Fe₂O₃ pillars improved the NO conversion in the high-temperature range. Nevertheless, the aggregated particles of the metal oxide limited the access of the reacting molecules to the inner structure of the catalyst, which affected the overall activity and promoted the formation of N₂O above 300 °C.

Enhancing the Mechanical Properties of Cu-Al-Ni Shape Memory Alloys Locally Reinforced by Alumina through the Powder Bed Fusion Process

A classical problem with Cu-based shape memory alloys (SMAs) is brittle fracture at triple junctions. This alloy possesses a martensite structure at room temperature and usually comprises elongated variants. Previous studies have shown that introducing reinforcement into the matrix can refine grains and break martensite variants. Grain refinement diminishes brittle fracture at triple junctions, whereas breaking the martensite variants can negatively affect the shape memory effect (SME), owing to martensite stabilization. Furthermore, the additive element may coarsen the grains under certain circumstances if the material has a lower thermal conductivity than the matrix, even when a small amount is distributed in the composite. Powder bed fusion is a favorable approach that allows the creation of intricate structures. In this study, Cu-Al-Ni SMA samples were locally reinforced with alumina (Al₂O₃), which has excellent biocompatibility and inherent hardness. The reinforcement layer was composed of 0.3 and 0.9 wt% Al₂O₃ mixed with a Cu-Al-Ni matrix, deposited around the neutral plane within the built parts. Two different thicknesses of the deposited layers were investigated, revealing that the failure mode during compression was strongly influenced by the thickness and reinforcement content. The optimized failure mode led to an increase in fracture strain, and therefore, a better SME of the sample, which was locally reinforced by 0.3 wt% alumina under a thicker reinforcement layer.

Catalytic Hydrodechlorination of 4-Chlorophenol by Palladium-Based Catalyst Supported on Alumina and Graphene Materials

Hydrodechlorination (HDC) is a reaction that involves the use of hydrogen to cleave the C-Cl bond in chlorinated organic compounds such as chlorophenols and chlorobenzenes, thus reducing their toxicity. In this study, a palladium (Pd) catalyst, which is widely used for HDC due to its advantageous physical and chemical properties, was immobilized on alumina (Pd/Al) and graphene-based materials (graphene oxide and reduced graphene oxide; Pd/GO and Pd/rGO, respectively) to induce the HDC of 4-chlorophenol (4-CP). The effects of the catalyst dosage, initial 4-CP concentration, and pH on 4-CP removal were evaluated. We observed that 4-CP was removed very rapidly when the HDC reaction was induced by Pd/GO and Pd/rGO. The granulation of Pd/rGO using sand was also investigated as a way to facilitate the separation of the catalyst from the treated aqueous solution after use, which is to improve practicality and effectiveness of the use of Pd catalysts with graphene-based support materials in an HDC system. The granulated catalyst (Pd/rGOSC) was employed in a column to induce HDC in a continuous flow reaction, leading to the successful removal of most 4-CP after 48 h. The reaction mechanisms were also determined based on the oxidation state of Pd, which was observed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Based on the results as a whole, the proposed granulated catalyst has the potential to greatly enhance the practical applicability of HDC for water purification.

Zirconia-Toughened Alumina Ceramic Wear Particles Do Not Elicit Inflammatory Responses in Human Macrophages

Ten percent of patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty (THA) require revision surgery. One of the reasons for THA are wear particles released from the implants that can activate the immune defense and cause osteolysis and failure of the joint implant. The discrepancies between reports on toxicity and immunogenicity of the implant materials led us to this study in which we compared toxicity and immunogenicity of well-defined nanoparticles from Al₂O₃, zirconia-toughened alumina (ZTA), and cobalt chrome (CoCr), a human THP-1 macrophage cell line, human PBMCs, and therefrom-derived primary macrophages. None of the tested materials decreased the viability of THP-1 macrophages nor human primary macrophages at the 24 h time point, indicating that at concentrations from 0.05 to 50 µm³/cell the tested materials are non-toxic. Forty-eight hours of treatment of THP-1 macrophages with 5 µm³/cell of CoCr and Al₂O₃ caused 8.3-fold and 4.6-fold increases in TNF-α excretion, respectively, which was not observed for ZTA. The comparison between THP-1 macrophages and human primary macrophages revealed that THP-1 macrophages show higher activation of cytokine expression in the presence of CoCr and Al₂O₃ particles than primary macrophages. Our results indicate that ZTA is a non-toxic implant material with no immunogenic effects in vitro.

One-Pot Fabrication of Nanocomposites Composed of Carbon Nanotubes and Alumina Powder Using a Rotatable Chemical Vapor Deposition System

The fabrication of multi-dimensional nanocomposites has been extensively attempted to achieve synergistic performance through the uniform mixing of functional constituents. Herein, we report a one-pot fabrication of nanocomposites composed of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and Al₂O₃ powder. Our strategy involves a synthesis of CNTs on the entire Al₂O₃ surface using a rotatable chemical vapor deposition system (RCVD). Ehylene and ferritin-induced nanoparticles were used as the carbon source and wet catalyst, respectively. The RCVD was composed of a quartz reaction tube, 5.08 cm in diameter and 150 cm in length, with a rotation speed controller. Ferritin dissolved in deionized water was uniformly dispersed on the Al₂O₃ surface and calcinated to obtain iron nanoparticles. The synthesis temperature, time, and rotation speed of the chamber were the main parameters used to investigate the growth behavior of CNTs. We found that the CNTs can be grown at least around 600 °C, and the number of tubes increases with increasing growth time. A faster rotation of the chamber allows for the uniform growth of CNT by the tip-growth mechanism. Our results are preliminary at present but show that the RCVD process is sufficient for the fabrication of powder-based nanocomposites.

SiC Nanoparticles Strengthened Alumina Ceramics Prepared by Extrusion Printing

Extrusion-free-form printing of alumina ceramics has the advantages of low cost, short cycle time, and high customization. However, some problems exist, such as the low solid content of ceramic paste and the unsatisfactory mechanical properties of pure alumina ceramics. In this study, SiC nanoparticles were used as a reinforcement phase added to the alumina ceramic matrix. Methylcellulose is used as the binder in the raw material system. Ammonium polyacrylate is used as a dispersant to change the rheological properties of the slurry and increase the solid content of ceramics. SiC nanoparticle-strengthened alumina ceramics were successfully prepared by the extrusion process. The relative settling height and viscosity of ceramic slurries were characterized. The sintering shrinkage of composite ceramics was tested. The flexural strength, fracture toughness, and hardness of the ceramics were characterized. The strengthening and toughening mechanisms of the composite ceramics were further explained by microscopic morphology analysis. Experimental results show that when the content of the dispersant is 1 wt.%, the rheological properties of the slurry are the best. Maximum measured bending strength (227 MPa) and fracture toughness (5.35 MPa·m^1/2) were reached by adding 8 wt% SiC nanoparticles; compared with pure alumina ceramics, flexural strength and fracture toughness increased by 42% and 41%, respectively. This study provides a low-cost and effective method for preparing ceramic composite parts.

A Novel Approach for Powder Bed Fusion of Ceramics Using Two Laser Systems

The one-step AM process is considered the goal many researchers seek in the field of Additive Manufacturing (AM) of high-technology ceramics. Among the several AM techniques, only Powder Bed Fusion (PBF) can directly print high-technology ceramics using one step. However, the PBF technique faces numerous challenges to efficiently be employed in the PBF of ceramics. These challenges include the formation of cracks, generated thermal stress, effective laser-powder interaction, and low acquired relative density. This study developed a new preheating mechanism for ceramic materials using two laser systems to surpass beyond these challenges and successfully print ceramics with a single-step AM method. One laser is used to preheat the powder particles before the second laser is utilised to complete the melting/sintering process. Both lasers travel along the same scanning path. There is a slight delay (0.0001 s) between the preheating laser and the melting/sintering laser to guarantee that the melting/sintering laser scans a properly preheated powder. To further facilitate testing of the preheating system, a numerical model has been developed to simulate the preheating and melting process and to acquire proper process parameters. The developed numerical model was shown to determine the correct process parameters without needing costly and time-consuming experiments. Alumina samples (10 × 10 × 6 mm³) were successfully printed using alumina powder as feedstock. The surface of the samples was nearly defect-free. The samples' relative densities exceeded 80%, the highest reported relative density for alumina produced by a single-step AM method. This discovery can significantly accelerate the transition to a one-step AM process of ceramics.

Insight into the Evolution Track for the Metathesis of Alkenes within Hierarchical Zeolite-Based Catalysts

The usage of hierarchical MFI zeolite enables the boosting catalytic performance of Mo-based catalysts for the olefin-metathesis reaction. The harvest of active catalysts roots from a segmental evolution track between hierarchical zeolite and Al2O3 slices for the fabrication of active sites. The working evolution track requires the indispensable engagements from intracrystalline mesoporous surface, Al2O3 slices and zeolitic Brønsted acid sites. The infilling of disaggregated Al2O3 slices into the intracrystalline mesopores triggers the creation of localized intrazeolite-Al2O3 interface, which enable the subsequent migration and trapping of surface molybdates into the micropores. The insulation of intrazeolite-Al2O3 interface or shielding of zeolitic Brønsted acid sites leads to the break of the evolution track. Our findings disclose the hidden functionality of mesoporosity as intrazeolite interface boundary for the fabrication of active sites and supply the new strategy for the rational design of zeolite catalysts.
