Abstract
Regional heterothermy describes when body regions differ in temperature, which can have important ramifications for performance because most biological processes are temperature dependent. However, the relationship between regional heterothermy and environmental temperature is not well known, particularly for ectotherms. The relationship between environmental heterogeneity and regional heterothermy might also yield insight into how the latter is regulated. We examined the thermal dependence of regional heterothermy (between the head and the cloaca) in live ring-necked snakes (Diadophis punctatus) in both the lab and the field, as well as in one dead and preserved individual. We found that the magnitude of the head-cloaca difference declined with average environmental temperature, that the relationship between head temperature and ambient temperature differed from that of cloaca temperature and ambient temperature, and that the preserved snake specimen did not display a consistent head-cloaca temperature difference. Our results suggest that (1) cloacal and head temperatures are regulated differently, (2) the head-cloaca temperature difference is not merely due to differences in the material properties of the head and cloaca, and (3) this difference may arise from altered circulation and perhaps even endogenous heat-generating mechanisms. Our results also suggest that the thermal dependence of regional heterothermy likely has ramifications for organismal function.

Abstract
Platelet-activating factor (PAF) plays a significant role in several leucocyte functions, including platelet aggregation and inflammation. Additionally, PAF has a role in the behavioral and physiological changes in mammals. However, the effect of PAF has not been well studied in birds. Therefore, the study aimed to determine if PAF affects feeding behavior, voluntary activity, cloacal temperature, and feed passage through the digestive tract in chicks (Gallus gallus). We also studied the involvement of PAF in the innate immune system induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a cell wall component of gram-negative bacteria. Both intraperitoneal (IP) and intracerebroventricular (ICV) injections of PAF significantly decreased food intake. IP injection of PAF significantly decreased voluntary activity and slowed the feed passage from the crop, whereas ICV injection had no effect. Conversely, ICV injection of PAF significantly increased the cloacal temperature, but IP injection had no effect. The IP injection of LPS significantly reduced the mRNA expression of lysophosphatidylcholine acyltransferase 2, an enzyme responsible for PAF production in the heart and pancreas. On the other hand, LPS significantly increased the mRNA expression of the PAF receptor in the peripheral organs. The present study shows that PAF influences behavioral and physiological responses and is related to the response against bacterial infections in chicks.

Abstract
Seasonal activation of the vertebrate hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis and gonadal development is initiated by gonadotropin-releasing hormone-I (GnRH) release from the hypothalamus. In photoperiodic species, the consistent annual change in photoperiod is the primary environmental signal affecting GnRH cell activity, including changes in the synthesis and secretion of this neuropeptide. Non-photoperiodic environmental cues such as energy availability also influence HPG axis activity, but the mechanisms mediating this influence, in particular on the GnRH system, are unclear. Understanding how the neuroendocrine system integrates environmental information is critical in determining the plasticity and adaptability of physiological responses to changing environments. The primary objective of this study was to investigate GnRH-mediated changes in HPG axis activity and gonadal development in response to energy availability in a wild bird. We hypothesized that negative energy balance inhibits HPG axis activity by affecting GnRH secretion. Moderate food restriction for several weeks in male house finches, Haemorhous mexicanus, decreased body condition and inhibited photoinduced testicular growth compared to birds fed ad libitum. Food restriction did not affect plasma luteinizing hormone (LH; a correlate of GnRH release) or plasma testosterone, but it enhanced the plasma LH response to an injection of the glutamatergic agonist, N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA). Thus, food restriction may decrease photoinduced HPG axis activation by acting centrally, in particular by attenuating the release of accumulated GnRH stores.

Abstract
Experiments were performed with the aim of determining the effect of melatonin administration on diurnal fluctuations in cloacal temperature (CT) of Marshall broiler chickens during the hot dry season. Birds in group I (12L:12D cycle) were raised under natural photoperiod of 12-h light and 12-h darkness, without melatonin supplementation, while those in group II (LL) were kept under 24-h continuous lighting, without melatonin administration. Broiler chickens in group III (LL + melatonin) were raised under 24-h continuous lighting, with melatonin supplementation at 0.5 mg/kg per os. The cloacal temperatures of 15 labeled broiler chickens from each group were measured at 6:00, 13:00, and 19:00 h, 7 days apart, from days 14-42. Temperature-humidity index was highest at day 14 of the study, with the value of 36.72 ± 0.82 °C but lowest at day 28 with the value of 30.91 ± 0.80 °C (P < 0.0001). The overall mean hourly cloacal temperature value of 41.51 ± 0.03 °C obtained in the 12L:12D cycle birds was significantly higher (P < 0.001) than the value of 41.16 ± 0.03 °C recorded in the melatonin-treated group but lower than that of 41.65 ± 0.03 °C obtained in the LL birds. Mortality due to hyperthermia commenced at day 28 in both 12L:12D cycle and LL broiler chickens but was delayed till day 42 in LL + MEL broiler chickens. In conclusion, melatonin administration alleviated the deleterious effects of heat stress on broiler chickens by maintaining their cloacal temperature at relatively low values.

Abstract
Photoperiod is the most important "noise-free" seasonal environmental cue for synchronizing physiological states (such as reproductive activity) in birds. However, in photoperiodic birds such as Japanese quail, the effect of photoperiod on adrenocortical activity remains unclear, particularly in males with differences in cloacal gland photoresponsiveness. At 8 wk of age, birds (n = 55) were either assigned to a short photoperiod (8L:16D; SD) or maintained under long photoperiod (16L:8D; LD; control). After 5 wk of SD exposure, males were classified as nonresponsive (SD-NR; with foam production) or responsive (SD-R; with no foam production) to short days, depending on the cloacal gland volume was above or below 1,000 mm(3). At 14 wk of age, droppings were collected during 3 consecutive days to determine corticosterone (CMs) and androgen metabolites (AMs) by enzyme immunoassays. Male Japanese quail under LD showed significantly higher concentrations of CMs (300 ± 10 ng/g) and AMs (1,257 ± 115 ng/g) than birds kept under SD. Under short days, SD-NR and SD-R showed differences (P < 0.0001), both in CM (153 ± 8 ng/g and 98 ± 6 ng/g, respectively) and AM concentrations (1,294 ± 309 ng/g and 275 ± 53 ng/g, respectively). Interestingly, although SD-NR males exhibited no cloacal gland arrest (according to cloacal gland volume and foam production) and similar testicular activity (AM values) to LD males, they showed lower concentrations of CMs compared with males that remained on LD (P < 0.05). Our findings suggest length of photoperiod affected hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal activity; however, that was not the only factor involved, because birds subjected to shorter days but whose hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis failed to respond had intermediate CM values. Further research is required to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of this interesting finding.

Abstract
Sexual behavior can be usefully parsed into an appetitive and a consummatory component. Both appetitive and consummatory male-typical sexual behaviors (respectively, ASB and CSB) are activated in male Japanese quail by testosterone (T) acting in the medial preoptic nucleus (POM), but never observed in females. This sex difference is based on a demasculinization (= organizational effect) by estradiol during embryonic life for CSB, but a differential activation by T in adulthood for ASB. Males expressing rhythmic cloacal sphincter movements (RCSMs; a form of ASB) or allowed to copulate display increased Fos expression in POM. We investigated Fos brain responses in females exposed to behavioral tests after various endocrine treatments. T-treated females displayed RCSM, but never copulated when exposed to another female. Accordingly they showed an increased Fos expression in POM after ASB but not CSB tests. Females treated with the aromatase inhibitor Vorozole in ovo and T in adulthood displayed both male-typical ASB and CSB, and Fos expression in POM was increased after both types of tests. Thus, the neural circuit mediating ASB is present or can develop in both sexes, but is inactive in females unless they are exposed to exogenous T. In contrast, the neural mechanism mediating CSB is not normally present in females, but can be preserved by blocking the embryonic production of estrogens. Overall these data confirm the difference in endocrine controls and probably neural mechanisms supporting ASB and CSB in quail, and highlight the complexity of mechanisms underlying sexual differentiation of behavior.

Abstract
Sexual arousal has many dimensions and has consequently been defined in various ways. In humans, sexual arousal can be assessed based in part on verbal communication. In male non-human mammalian species, it has been argued that arousal can only be definitively inferred if the subject exhibits a penile erection in a sexual context. In non-mammalian species that lack an intromittent organ, as is the case for most avian species, the question of how to assess sexual arousal has not been thoroughly addressed. Based on studies performed in male Japanese quail, we argue that several behavioral or physiological characteristics provide suitable measures of sexual arousal in birds and probably also in other tetrapods. These indices include, the performance of appetitive sexual behavior in anticipation of copulation (although anticipation and arousal are not synonymous), the activation of specific brain area as identified by the detection of the expression of immediate early genes (fos, egr-1) or by 2-deoxyglucose quantitative autoradiography, and above all, by the release of dopamine in the medial preoptic area as measured by in vivo dialysis. Based on these criteria, it is possible to assess in birds sexual arousal in its broadest sense but meeting the more restrictive definition of arousal proposed for male mammals (erection in an explicit sexual context) is and will probably remain impossible in birds until refinement of in vivo imaging techniques such fMRI allow us to match in different species, with and without an intromittent organ, the brain areas that are activated in the presence of specific stimuli.

Abstract
On their first sexual encounter, naïve male Japanese quail will attend to and approach a female; they sometimes mount but they do not always copulate. During the second encounter, most males successfully copulate. Although sexual experience facilitates subsequent sexual interactions, sensory cues provided by females, independent of any sexual encounter, may also enhance sexual performance. To investigate whether previous exposure to a conspecific affects subsequent sexual behavior, we allowed inexperienced males to observe an empty box, or a conspecific consisting of either an experienced female or male for 2.5 min/day on 7 days. Measures of appetitive sexual behavior were recorded during these tests. On day 8, subjects were allowed to copulate with a novel female for 5 min. On the following days, all subjects were repeatedly provided with visual access to a female and allowed to mate. In the pre-copulatory trials males initially exhibited a high frequency of appetitive responses that dissipated with repetition. Pre-copulatory experience also significantly affected motivation to mate with subjects exposed to females copulating more quickly than other subjects. Post-copulatory appetitive behavior also differed between groups: control subjects showed the highest behavioral frequency followed by males exposed to females and finally males exposed to males. These data indicate that pre-copulatory social experience profoundly influences subsequent sexual behavior and probably reproductive success. This experience effect is independent of any hormonal effect (such as one resulting from changes in secretion following different social interactions) given that the subjects were castrates chronically treated with testosterone.

Abstract
Five variants of regeneration of the digestive system in holothurians are recognized on the basis of original and published data. They depend on presence of organs remains, ability of cells for de-differentiation, damage type, and ontogenetic stage. Regeneration occurs in all cases by means of differentiated cells, no stem cells participation was recorded in any species studied. It is suggested that the entire diversity of recovering reactions observed for the holothurians gut is not an evolutionary innovation in Holothuroidea but evolved on the basis of already existing mechanisms of regeneration and blastogenesis in the ancient echinodermats. Analysis of khown data indicates that holothurians possess two groups of recovering processes, one of which is close to embryonic development and another to blastogenesis by respective mechanisms. This may indicate probable polyphyletic origin of reparative regeneration in Echinodermata.

Abstract
The present study investigates the effects of temporal synergism of 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) and L-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA) and pineal function (pinealectomy and melatonin administration) on gonadal response and nitric oxide (NO) activity in Japanese quail. Three-week-old male quails were divided into 9 groups, as follows: (I) control (treated with normal saline); (II) 8-h and (III) 12-h (receiving L-DOPA after the administration of 5-HTP [5mg/100g body weight] at the interval of 8 and 12h, respectively, over a period of 13 days); (IV) SO (sham operated); (V) Px (pinealectomized); (VI) Veh (vehicle treated control); (VII) Mel (melatonin 25 microg/100g body weight for 45 days); (VIII) 12-h+Veh; and (IX) 12-h+Mel (same as in (III) but further treated with the vehicle or melatonin, respectively, for 32 days). Body weight and cloacal gland volume were recorded weekly, whereas spermatogenesis, plasma testosterone concentration, and total nitrite and nitrate concentration in plasma, hypothalamus, and testes were measured at the termination of the study. Results indicate that compared to the controls, 8-h, Mel, and 12-h+Mel treatments suppressed whereas 12-h and Px stimulated the reproductive system. Further, a significant increase in plasma testosterone, total nitrite, and nitrate in the 12-h and Px groups and a decrease in these concentrations in 8-h, Mel and 12-h+Mel quail were observed. It is evident that 5-HTP and L-DOPA given at the interval of 8h, as well as melatonin, are potent inhibitors of gonadal development, and the gonado stimulatory effect of the 12-h temporal relationship of the neurotransmitter precursors is masked by the inhibitory effect of melatonin. It is concluded that modulation of the daily phase relationship of neural oscillations and pineal function alters gonadal function and NO activity. Further, NO exhibits a parallel relationship with gonadal function in Japanese quail; this relationship appears to be mediated through NO activity, suggesting a causal relationship, although the mechanism between the 2 systems remains a topic of discussion.

Abstract
Broiler chicks that traverse a T-maze quickly to reinstate contact with their companions (HP, high performers) are known to grow faster, are more social, and have a reduced plasma corticosterone response to acute stress than slower chicks (LP, low performers). High-performing quail from a line selected for reduced rather than exaggerated (high-stress) adrenocortical stress responsiveness also show enhanced female reproductive performance when compared with LP-high-stress quail. Herein, time courses of male sexual development were evaluated in genetically unremarkable quail that were categorized at 2 d of age as HP or LP in the T-maze. Body weight, cloacal gland volume (CVOL), proportion of individuals that produced cloacal gland foam, intensity of foam production, and CVOL relative to BW (RCVOL) were determined weekly from 4 to 10 wk of age, and again at 22 wk, along with absolute and BW-adjusted testes weight. Although CVOL and RCVOL were initially similar in both T-maze groups, both variables were greater (P < 0.05) in HP than in LP quail between 6 and 10 wk of age. High-performing birds also showed a trend (P < 0.1) of greater cloacal gland foam than their LP counterparts from 5 to 7 wk. From 8 wk on, all birds were in foam production. Intensity of foam production results generally mimicked those found for CVOL and RCVOL. Body weights were higher (P < 0.05) in HP than LP quail from 5 to 7 wk. No T-maze group differences were found in any of the variables at 22 wk of age. The results suggest that rapid negotiation of the T-maze is associated with accelerated growth and puberty in male quail, although the enhanced reproductive development of HP males does not remain extant in aged adults.

Abstract
1. Two experiments were conducted to examine the effect of feeding higher supplemental vitamin E (VE) concentrations on male reproductive variables, fertility and hatchability of quails. 2. In experiment 1, sixty 5-week-old male quails, reared in individual cages, were fed male breeder diets supplemented with 0, 75, 150, 225 or 300 IU alpha-tocopherol acetate/kg. At 10 weeks, observations on cloacal gland size, foam production, testes weight and blood samples for testosterone estimation were taken. 3. In experiment 2, 50 male and 50 female cage-reared quails (5 weeks old) were fed male breeder and layer rations, respectively, supplemented with 0, 75, 150, 225 or 300 IU/kg. At 13 weeks, 9 different mating pairs (5 pairs/group) were formed. Group 1 contained one control male and one control female in each of 5 pens. In groups 2 to 5, control males were paired with females on supplements of 75, 150, 225 or 300 IU/kg. In groups 6 to 9, control females were paired with males on supplements of 75, 150, 225 and 300 IU/kg. During subsequent adaptation and egg collection periods, each of 10 d, control layer ration was fed to all groups. All the eggs laid during the 10-d egg collection period were incubated artificially to estimate fertility and hatchability. The trial was repeated at 15 weeks. 4. Adult male quails receiving moderate supplemental VE (75 and 150 IU/kg) had a higher cloacal gland index, quantity of foam secretion, testicular weight and plasma testosterone than quails fed on either VE-deficient or more highly supplemented diets (225 and 300 IU alpha-tocopherol acetate/kg). 5. It was concluded that a supplement of 75 IU VE/kg in maize/soybean diet could provide the best reproductive performance of male breeder quails. Cloacal gland index, quantity of foam secretion, testicular weight and plasma testosterone can serve as indirect indicators of testicular activity and fertilising ability in quails. Supplemental VE did not affect the fertility and hatchability of male and female Japanese quails.

Abstract
SUMMARY
We present the first experimental evidence that a bird is capable of evaporating enough water from the cloaca to be important for thermoregulation. We measured rates of evaporation occurring from the mouth, the skin, and the cloaca of Inca doves Columbina inca Lesson and Eurasian quail Coturnix coturnix Linnaeus. Inca doves showed no significant increase in cutaneous evaporation in response to curtailment of buccopharyngeal evaporation. Cloacal evaporation in doves was negligible at ambient temperatures of 30°, 35° and 40°C. However, at 42°C, the apportionment of total evaporation in doves was 53.4% cutaneous, 25.4%buccopharyngeal and 21.2% cloacal, with cloacal evaporation shedding, on average, 150 mW of heat. In contrast, the evaporative apportionment in quail at 32°C (the highest ambient temperature tolerated by this species) was 58.2% cutaneous, 35.4% buccopharyngeal and 6.4% cloacal. These results suggest that, for some birds, cloacal evaporation can be controlled and could serve as an important emergency tactic for thermoregulation at high ambient temperatures.

Abstract
In this study, heart and respiratory rates, cloacal temperature, and quality of sedation were evaluated before (0 min) and after (10, 20, and 30 min) i.m. administration of xylazine (10 mg/kg; n = 7), medetomidine (75 li; n = 6), detcmidine (0.3 mg/kg; n = 6), or diazepam (6 mg/kg; n = 7) in rock partridges (Alectoris graeca). All partridges recovered from sedation without any disturbance. Xylazine and diazepam administration did not induce significant changes in heart rate, which did decrease significantly after medetomidine and detomidine administration (P < 0.001). Mean respiratory rate was decreased dramatically at 20 and 30 min after xylazine (P < 0.001) and medetomidine (P < 0.005) administration, and at all stages of sedation after detomidine injection (P < 0.001), whereas there was not any significant change after diazepam injection. In all groups, cloacal temperature measured at 10, 20, and 30 min tended to decrease compared with baseline values. Sedative effects of the drugs started within 2.1+/-0.2 min for detomidine, 2.6 +/- 0.4 min for diazepam, 3.1 -+/-.4 min for xylazine, and 4.8+/-0.8 min for medetomidine application. There was an extreme variability in time to recovery for each drug: 205 +/-22.2 min for xylazine, 95 -12.2 min for medetomidine, 260+/-17.6 min for detomidine, and 149 + 8.3 min for diazepam. In conclusion, xylazine, medetomidine, detomidine, and diazepam produced sedation, which could permit some clinical procedures such as handling and radiographic examination of partridges to occur. Of the four drugs, xylazine produced stronger and more efficient sedation compared to the others, which could permit only minor procedures to be performed. However, depending on the drug used, monitoring of heart and respiratory rates and cloacal temperature might be required.

Abstract
In this study, we addressed why Caenorhabditis elegans males are inefficient at fertilizing their hermaphrodites. During copulation, hermaphrodites generally move away from males before they become impregnated. C. elegans hermaphrodites reproduce by internal self-fertilization, so that copulation with males is not required for species propagation. The hermaphroditic mode of reproduction could potentially relax selection for genes that optimize male mating behavior. We examined males from hermaphroditic and gonochoristic (male-female copulation) Caenorhabditis species to determine if they use different sensory and motor mechanisms to control their mating behavior. Instead, we found through laser ablation analysis and behavioral observations that hermaphroditic C. briggsae and gonochoristic C. remanei and Caenorhabditis species 4, PB2801 males produce a factor that immobilizes females during copulation. This factor also stimulates the vulval slit to widen, so that the male copulatory spicules can easily insert. C. elegans and C. briggsae hermaphrodites are not affected by this factor. We suggest that sensory and motor execution of mating behavior have not significantly changed among males of different Caenorhabditis species; however, during the evolution of internal self-fertilization, hermaphrodites have lost the ability to respond to the male soporific-inducing factor.

Abstract
An attempt has been made to investigate the relationship of cloacal gland with testes, testosterone and fertility in different lines of Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica). For this study, three lines of healthy adult male Japanese quails (<12 weeks) viz., heavy body weight (HB), white breasted (WB), and white egg shell (WES) were taken. They were housed in individual cages under uniform husbandry conditions and were provided with normal quail breeder ration and water ad libitum, with 14 h light/day. The experimental birds were selected from each of these three lines and categorized into different groups (15 birds/group) based on the increasing order of the area of cloacal gland. At the end of this experiment (24 weeks) the data indicated that size of the cloacal gland was directly proportional to foam discharge, foam weight, testicular weight, fertility and testosterone concentration in plasma. From this study it may be concluded that area of cloacal gland in Japanese quail is positively correlated with testicular weight, level of testosterone in plasma and fertility. Visual examination of cloacal gland and cloacal foam may provide a valuable non-invasive tool for predicting the fertilizing ability of individual male bird.

Abstract
This experiment was to investigate the effects of increasing the level of dietary Vitamin E (Vit. E) on cloacal gland size, foam production and semen characteristics of male Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix Japonica). One hundred and eighty male Japanese quail chicks (day old) were randomly distributed to three dietary treatments for a period of 25 weeks. Each treatment comprised of three replicates each containing 20 chicks. The basal diet contained 15 IU Vit. E/kg and the two experimental diets were supplemented with 150 and 300 IU Vit. E/kg (diets T2 and T3, respectively). DL alpha-tocopherol acetate was used as the source of Vit. E. All chicks were provided feed and water ad libitum. Foam characteristics, in terms of frequency of foam discharge (24h), cloacal gland index and foam weight were significantly higher (P<0.05) in T2 group. Body weight, testes weight (left and right) and plasma testosterone concentrations did not differ significantly. Semen characteristics (semen volume, sperm motility, % live sperm, % hatchability and sperm concentrations) did not differ significantly (P>0.05). Percentages of abnormal and dead spermatozoa were significantly (P<0.05) lower and fertility was higher (P<0.05) in the T2 group. From this study, it can be concluded that moderate supplementation of dietary Vit. E may be beneficial for foam production, cloacal gland and improve the semen characteristics in male Japanese quail.

Abstract
Corticosterone is linked to testicular depression, and in Coturnix, a relatively photorefractory species, day length and androgen dependency in cloacal gland development and foam production are evident. Furthermore, male quail selected for reduced (low stress, LS) rather than exaggerated (high stress, HS) plasma corticosterone stress response show more photo-induced reproductive development, greater resistance to reproductive declines induced by exposure to very short days, and a quicker recovery to a higher reproductive level upon return to long days. To determine whether a milder reduction in day length would also influence stress line reproductive photoresponsiveness, and perhaps photorefractoriness, males grown on 16 h of light were given 13 h of light for 4 wk followed by a return to long days for 12 wk. Cloacal gland measurements were made following the initial stimulatory photoperiod and weekly thereafter during the 2 light treatments. Plasma testosterone was determined initially, after 4 wk of light reduction, and at the end of the study, along with BW, testes weight (TWT), and TWT relative to BW. Cloacal gland volume (CVOL) was greater in LS than HS males grown on long days. Whereas exposure to 13 h of light reduced CVOL in both lines, line differences (LS > HS) persisted during the first 3 wk of light reduction. Moreover, by 2 wk of rephotostimulation, and weekly thereafter, line differences (LS > HS) in CVOL reemerged. Cloacal gland foam production and the proportion of individuals that produced cloacal gland foam responses reflected changes in CVOL. The BW did not differ by line, yet LS males had a higher TWT and TWT relative to BW than HS ones. All individuals, however, exhibited relative photorefractory responses. Whereas none of the LS males completely resisted reproductive regression induced by a 3 h light reduction, LS males showed other reproductive benefits upon mild photocastration and subsequent rephotostimulation (e.g., greater resistance to CVOL and cloacal gland foam production losses during a mild light crash and quicker restoration to full reproductive potential upon relighting).

Abstract
We investigated the neural sites related to the occurrence of appetitive (ASB) and consummatory (CSB) aspects of male sexual behaviour in Japanese quail. Castrated males treated with testosterone were exposed for 5 min to one of four experimental conditions: (i) free interaction with a female (CSB group); (ii) expression of rhythmic cloacal sphincter movements in response to the visual presentation of a female (ASB-F group); (iii) or a male (ASB-M group), and (iv) handling as a control manipulation. Brains were collected 90 min after the start of behavioural tests and stained by immunocytochemistry for the FOS protein. An increase in FOS expression was observed throughout the rostro-caudal extent of the medial preoptic nucleus (POM) in CSB males, whereas the view of a female (ASB-F) induced an increased FOS expression in the rostral POM only. In the CSB group, there was also an increase in FOS expression in the bed nucleus striae terminalis, and both the CSB and ASB-F groups exhibited increased FOS expression in aspects of the ventro-lateral thalamus (VLT) related to visual processing. Moreover, both the CSB and ASB-M groups showed increased FOS expression in the lateral septum. These data provide additional support to the idea that there is a partial anatomical dissociation between structures involved in the control of both aspects of male sexual behaviour and independently provide data consistent with a previous lesion study that indicated that the rostral and caudal POM differentially control the expression of ASB and CSB in quail.

Abstract
Japanese quail are an important model for the discovery of neuroendocrine mechanisms of sexual behavior. In common with most birds and many other vertebrates, there are no genitalia of the mammalian kind (no phallus or vagina). Instead, close contact between the cloacal openings of the male and female is critical for successful mating. Prior research has shown that males produce distinctive rhythmic movements of the foam gland portion of the cloacal sphincter muscle (RCSMs) in response to social stimuli (presentation of a conspecific female or male). These RCSMs enhance the male's fertilization success. Females, unlike males, do not show cloacal sphincter movements to social stimuli (Experiment 1) and female cloacal sphincter muscle activity immediately following copulation does not predict fertilization success (Experiment 2). Females implanted with testosterone propionate (TP), however, show large numbers of male-typical RCSMs in response to social stimuli (Experiment 3). The results of Experiment 3 show that rhythmic movements of the cloacal sphincter muscle shown by TP-treated females are regulated by distal (visual) stimuli and therefore by the brain. They also show that the absence of socially modulated RCSMs in normal females is an activational hormone phenomenon (a sex difference produced by adult hormonal dimorphism), rather than a reflection of prior hormonal organization. These results add to an understanding of the hormonal basis of sex differences in motor mechanisms of sexual behavior in non-mammalian species.

Abstract
Non-genomic effects of steroid hormones on cell physiology have been reported in the brain. However, relatively little is known about the behavioral significance of these actions. Male sexual behavior is activated by testosterone partly through its conversion to estradiol via the enzyme aromatase in the preoptic area (POA). Brain aromatase activity (AA) changes rapidly which might in turn be important for the rapid regulation of behavior. Here, acute effects of Vorozole, an aromatase inhibitor, injected IP at different doses and times before testing (between 15 and 60 min), were assessed on male sexual behavior in quail. To limit the risk of committing both types of statistical errors (I and II), data of all experiments were entered into a meta-analysis. Vorozole significantly inhibited mount attempts (P < 0.05, size effect [g] = 0.527) and increased the latency to first copulation (P < 0.05, g = 0.251). The treatment had no effect on the other measures of copulatory behavior. Vorozole also inhibited appetitive sexual behavior measured by the social proximity response (P < 0.05, g = 0.534) or rhythmic cloacal sphincter movements (P < 0.001, g = 0.408). Behavioral inhibitions always reached a maximum at 30 min. Another aromatase inhibitor, androstatrienedione, induced a similar rapid inhibition of sphincter movements. Radioenzyme assays demonstrated that within 30 min Vorozole had reached the POA and completely blocked AA measured in homogenates. When added to the extracellular milieu, Vorozole also blocked within 5 min the AA in POA explants maintained in vitro. Together, these data demonstrate that aromatase inhibition rapidly decreases both consummatory and appetitive aspects of male sexual behavior.

Abstract
Changes in heart rate (f(H)) and cloacal ventilation frequency (f(C)) were investigated in the Fitzroy turtle, Rheodytes leukops, under normoxic (17.85 kPa) and hypoxic (3.79 kPa) conditions at 25 degrees C. Given R. leukops' high reliance on aquatic respiration via the cloacal bursae, the objective of this study was to examine the effect of varying aquatic PO(2) levels upon the expression of a bradycardia in a freely diving, bimodally respiring turtle. In normoxia, mean diving f(H) and f(C) for R. leukops remained constant with increasing submergence length, indicating that a bradycardia failed to develop during extended dives of up to 3 days. Alternatively, exposure to aquatic hypoxia resulted in the expression of a bradycardia as recorded by a decreasing mean diving f(H) with increasing dive duration. The observed bradycardia is attributed to a hypoxic-induced metabolic depression, possibly facilitated by a concurrent decrease in f(C). Results suggest that R. leukops alters its strategy from aquatic O(2) extraction via cloacal respiration in normoxia to O(2) conservation when exposed to aquatic hypoxia for the purpose of extending dive duration. Upon surfacing, a significant tachycardia was observed for R. leukops regardless of aquatic PO(2), presumably functioning to rapidly equilibrate blood and tissue gas tensions with alveolar gas to reduce surfacing duration.

Abstract
Demonstrations of increased reproductive success due to sexual conditioning in Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) have been reported, although the mechanisms that underlie these effects have remained elusive. One possible mechanism is conditioned rhythmic cloacal sphincter movements (RCSM). Two experiments were conducted with male quail to determine whether associations between a conditioned stimulus (CS) and a hen would result in the ability of the CS to elicit RCSM, and to explore the androgen mediation of conditioned RCSM. The results suggest that a focal CS paired with visual access to a female will elicit RCSM via a representation of the hen activated by the CS. Further, the available evidence indicates that conditioned RCSM is androgen mediated and that this learning may transfer across breeding seasons.

Abstract
Circulating concentrations of thyroxine (T(4)) vary seasonally in many vertebrates. This study examined the seasonal variation in plasma concentrations of T(4) in juvenile American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) from three populations in central Florida, USA. One site, Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge, is considered a reference site whereas the other two lakes, Lake Apopka and Orange Lake, are significantly impacted by human activity. Juvenile American alligators ranging from 75-150 cm in total length were hand-captured at night from November 2000-April 2002. Plasma thyroxine concentrations were analyzed using a radioimmunoassay (RIA) previously validated for alligator plasma. Juvenile American alligators display seasonal variation in circulating T(4) concentrations. Plasma T(4) concentrations decrease from August/September to November and then begin a slow rise until April, at which point they plateau. Sex of juveniles influenced plasma concentrations of T(4) in some months but did not appear to alter the pattern in seasonal variation. The pattern we observed in plasma T(4) concentrations is not directly related to an environmental factor such as ambient temperature but is similar to that seen in plasma sex steroid concentrations during the reproductive cycle of adult alligators. Although the pattern and plasma concentration of T(4) exhibits significant variation among the three lakes studied, the pattern in seasonal variation appears similar. Comparing the seasonal pattern in plasma T(4) with plasma concentrations of sex steroids (testosterone and estradiol-17beta) or corticosterone could provide important information on the peripubescent life stage of the American alligator.
