Abstract
A compact antioxidant interfacial layer was fabricated by combining phosphorylation treatment with protocatechuic acid (PA) copolymerization to enhance the physical and oxidative stability of high internal phase emulsions (HIPEs) prepared using perilla protein isolate (PPI). The covalent binding between PPI and phosphate groups induced conformational changes, facilitating the interaction between PPI and PA. The formed phosphorylated PPI-PA conjugates (LPPI-PA) exhibited a reduced particle size of 196.75 nm, promoting their adsorption at the interface. HIPEs prepared by LPPI-PA conjugates showed higher storage stability due to decreased droplet size, increased interfacial protein adsorption content (90.48%), and the formation of an interconnected network within the system. Additionally, the combination of LPPI and PA anchored PA to the interface, significantly inhibiting lipid oxidation in HIPEs as evidenced by low levels of lipid hydroperoxide (30.33 μmol/g oil) and malondialdehyde (379.34 nmol/g oil). This study holds significant implications for improving the stability of HIPEs.

Abstract
In this study, the active food packaging film were prepared using hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan with different substitution sites (O-HACC & N-HACC) and dialdehyde chitosan (DCS) grafted with protocatechuic acid (PA). To explore the effect of chitosan quaternization positions and crosslinking approaches on the slow-release and antibacterial properties, the double-crosslinked film were fabricated through the self-coupling reaction of PA and Schiff base reaction between amino groups on HACC and aldehyde groups on DCS. The HACC/DCS-based film exhibited stable porous three-dimensional networks with high nisin loading ratios (>90 %). With the participation of the catechol-catechol structure, the dense double-crosslinked film effectively restricted the diffusion of the water molecules, resulting in excellent slow-release properties fitting with the Korsmeyer-Peppas kinetic model. Especially, O-HACC/PA-g-DCS film, which had more reaction sites for Schiff base crosslinking than N-HACC, exhibited the equilibrium swelling ratio of 800 % at 60 h and could sustainably release nisin via non-Fickian diffusion behavior until 48 h. Moreover, the HACC/DCS-based double-crosslinked film performed good long-time antibacterial activity and preservation effects on salmon. On the 10th day of storage, the TVBN of N-HACC/PA-g-DCS and O-HACC/PA-g-DCS groups were only 28.26 ± 1.93 and 29.06 ± 1.68 mg/100 g and still lower than the thresholds.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The increasing quest for effective and safe antiaging skincare solutions has led to a surge in the exploration of natural compounds such as phenolic acids. Despite the proven efficacy of traditional antiaging ingredients like retinol, their associated side effects have necessitated the search for alternatives. AIMS This study aimed to assess the anti-wrinkle efficacy of a standardized phenolic acids polymer extract (PAPE) from propolis, employing both in vitro and clinical methodologies to explore its suitability as a novel antiaging skincare ingredient for sensitive and nonsensitive skin types. PATIENTS/METHODS The study comprised of evaluating PAPE effects on key skin health biomarkers in dermal fibroblasts and keratinocytes. A double-blind, randomized clinical trial involving female participants aged 30-70 years assessed the wrinkle-reducing effectiveness of face creams formulated with two concentrations of PAPE (1.5% and 3%) over a 28-day period. RESULTS In vitro studies indicated that PAPE could modulate inflammation and tissue remodeling biomarkers. The clinical trial demonstrated that applying PAPE-enriched cream resulted in significant wrinkle reduction, with 25% and 34% improvements for the 1.5% and 3% PAPE formulations, respectively. Subjective feedback from participants further validated the antiaging efficacy and overall satisfaction with the product. CONCLUSION Incorporating PAPE offers a compelling antiaging solution, significantly reducing wrinkle depth with a favorable safety profile. The study substantiates PAPE's potential as an effective and safe alternative to conventional antiaging ingredients, aligning with the cosmetic industry's shift toward natural, evidence-based formulations.

Abstract
Bladder cancer (BC) is the 10th most common tumour with a high incidence and recurrence rate worldwide; however, the current therapies present limitations as, regularly, not all patients benefit from treatment. Therefore, the search for new, active marine phenolic acids with anti-tumour properties is imperative. In this study, we subjected marine phenolic acids to in silico investigations such as network pharmacology, molecular docking, and molecular dynamics simulation (MD) to identify a plausible pathway and the lead compound that inhibits BC. According to the network pharmacology analysis, eight hub genes (PLAU, MMP2, ITGB3, MAPK1, PTPN11, ESR1, TLR4, MMP9) were found and linked to the enrichment of hsa05205: proteoglycans in cancer, and four hub genes (MMP1, MMP2, MAPK1, MMP9) were involved in the enrichment of hsa05219: BC. Subsequently, molecular docking studies showed that the marine phenolic acids exhibit a strong binding affinity for the target protein, matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MPP9). Among these 14 marine phenolic acids, chicoric acid showed the highest binding affinity of -67.1445 kcal/mol and formed hydrogen bonds with the residues of Ala189, Gln227, Leu188, His226, Ala242, Arg249, Ala191, and Gly186 in the active site of the MPP9 protein. Then, molecular dynamics simulation revealed that chicoric acid formed a stable protein-ligand complex with RMSD and RMSF values of 0.72 nm and 0.53 nm, respectively. Furthermore, the PCA method was employed to understand the dynamical behaviour in the conformational space of MPP9 protein bound to chicoric acid, and the results showed the good conformational space behaviour of MPP9 protein. Moreover, chicoric acid showed a free binding energy value of -32.62 kcal/mol, which indicated it could be a BC inhibitor. Overall, chicoric acid demonstrated potential anti-BC activity through MPP9 protein inhibition.

Abstract
With the increasing demand for non-chemical weed control methods, phenolic acids have shown promise due to their natural weed inhibitory potential. In this study, the inhibitory effect of ferulic acid, vanillic acid and p-coumaric acid was investigated on Ambrosia artemisiifolia L. and the selectivity of Zea mays L. against these phenolic acids was tested. The seeds of A. artemisiifolia and Z. mays were treated in vitro with three phenolic acids at doses of 200-600 × 10-7 mol and in vivo foliar on A. artemisiifolia and Z. mays plants. While all phenolic acids had effects on the early growth of A. artemisiifolia, p-coumaric acid significantly reduced the length of radicle and hypocotyl by more than 60% while the effects on Z. mays were minimal. In vivo assessments using chlorophyll fluorescence and multispectral imaging showed selective stress responses in A. artemisiifolia but not in Z. mays after foliar application. The in vitro results show that p-coumaric acid is a promising compound for the control of A. artemisiifolia. However, these phenolic acids at these doses led to an insufficient reduction in photochemical efficiency. Therefore, these natural compounds need to be combined with other methods of weed control.

Abstract
Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana L.) is a tasty, polyphenol-rich tropical fruit. The edible part is highly appreciated by its aroma, taste and texture. The non-edible part, rich in polyphenols, has been traditionally used in Thai medicine. In this work, flavonoids and phenolic acid/derivatives were identified in mangosteen extracts (ME) from edible and non-edible portions. We first studied the effects of MEs on the growth, metabolism, antioxidant capacity, biofilm formation and antimicrobial capacity of eight bifidobacteria and lactobacilli strains from intestinal origin and two commercial probiotic strains (BB536 and GG). ME concentrations higher than 10-20 % were inhibitory for all strains. However, ME concentrations of 5 % significantly (P < 0.01) increased all strains antioxidant capacity, reduced biofilm-formation, and enhanced inhibition against Gram-positive pathogens. To apply these knowledge, bifunctional fermented milk products were elaborated with 5 % ME and individual strains, which were selected taking into account their growth with ME, and the widest range of values on antioxidant capacity, biofilm formation and antimicrobial activity (bifidobacteria INIA P2 and INIA P467, lactobacilli INIA P459 and INIA P708, and reference strain GG). Most strains survived well manufacture, refrigerated storage and an in vitro simulation of major conditions encountered in the gastrointestinal tract. As expected, products supplemented with ME showed higher polyphenol content and antioxidant capacity levels than control. After sensory evaluation, products containing strains INIA P2, INIA P708 and GG outstood as best.

Abstract
Fermentation can transform bioactive compounds in food and improve their biological activity. This study aims to explore the transformation of polyphenols in mulberry juice and the improvement of its anti-aging effect. The results demonstrated that Lactobacillus plantarum SC-5 transformed anthocyanin in mulberry juice into more phenolic acids, especially improved 2-hydroxy-3-(4-hydroxyphenyl) propanoic acid from 4.16 ± 0.06 to 10.07 ± 0.03. In the D-gal-induced mouse model, fermented mulberry juice significantly raised the abundance of Bifidobacteriaceae (303.7 %) and Lactobacillaceae (237.2 %) and Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in intestine, further reducing the level of oxidative stress (12.3 %). Meanwhile, the expression of Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) and Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) increased, which protected the integrity of hippocampal tissue. Morris water maze results approved that fermented mulberry juice improved cognitive ability in aging mice (30.3 %). This study provides theoretical support for the view that fermentation is an effective means of developing functional foods.

Abstract
Artichokes (Cynara scolymus L.) are valuable foods, thanks to their health benefits, but they generate significant waste during their production, harvesting, and processing, which poses sustainability issues. This study applied an agroprospecting approach to convert Tema artichoke biowaste (TB) into valuable resources, starting from a global perspective of the production chain to the targeted applications based on chemical and biological analysis. The major TB was identified in the outer bracts of the immature flower heads, which were collected throughout the harvesting season, extracted, and analyzed. The most abundant compounds were phenolic acids including chlorogenic acid and caffeoylquinic derivatives. Among flavonoids, cynaroside was the most abundant compound. Multivariate analysis distinguished batches by collection period, explaining 77.7% of the variance, with most compounds increasing in concentration later in the harvest season. Subsequently, TB extracts were analyzed for their potential in wound healing and anti-aging properties. Fibroblasts were used to assess the effect of selected extracts on cell migration through a scratch wound assay and on cellular senescence induced by etoposide. The results show a significant decrease in senescence-associated β-galactosidase activity, γH2AX nuclear accumulation, and both p53 and p21 protein levels. Overall, this study ascribes relevant anti-skin aging effects to TB, thus increasing its industrial value in cosmeceutical and nutraceutical applications.

Abstract
Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is a reemerging arbovirus causing disease on a global scale, and the potential for its epidemics remains high. CHIKV has caused millions of cases and heavy economic burdens around the world, while there are no available approved antiviral therapies to date. In this study, nifuroxazide, an FDA-approved antibiotic for acute diarrhea or colitis, was found to significantly inhibit a variety of arboviruses, although its antiviral activity varied among different target cell types. Nifuroxazide exhibited relatively high inhibitory efficiency in yellow fever virus (YFV) infection of the hepatoma cell line Huh7, tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) and west nile virus (WNV) infection of the vascular endothelial cell line HUVEC, and CHIKV infection of both Huh7 cells and HUVECs, while it barely affected the viral invasion of neurons. Further systematic studies on the action stage of nifuroxazide showed that nifuroxazide mainly inhibited in the viral replication stage. In vivo, nifuroxazide significantly reduced the viral load in muscles and protected mice from CHIKV-induced footpad swelling, an inflammation injury within the arthrosis of infected mice. These results suggest that nifuroxazide has a potential clinical application as an antiviral drug, such as in the treatment of CHIKV infection.

Abstract
Teff (Eragrostis tef), a gluten-free cereal crop cultivated originally in Northeast Africa, is increasingly utilized due to its nutritional and health benefits. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of ethanol extract obtained from raw and thermally treated teff, referred to as RTE and TTE, respectively, on uncontrolled growth and activated metastasis using human cancer cell lines. Both RTE and TTE contained flavones, such as orientin (luteolin 8-C-glucoside) and vitexin (apigenin 8-C-glucoside), and phenolic acids, such as protocatechuic acid and p-coumaric acid. TTE showed higher total phenol, protocatechuic acid, and p-coumaric acid contents, but lower orientin content compared to RTE. RTE and TTE significantly suppressed cell growth of H1299 human lung cancer cells, with TTE exhibiting more pronounced effects than RTE, while both extracts had only minimal effects on the growth of non-malignant human umbilical vein endothelial cells. The growth-inhibitory activities of RTE and TTE in H1299 cells were associated with apoptosis induction and cell cycle arrest at the G2/M phase. TTE produced an additional effect on inducing cell cycle arrest at the S phase in H1299 cells, potentially contributing to its stronger growth-inhibitory effects. Moreover, both RTE and TTE effectively inhibited key events in metastasis, such as invasion, migration, and adhesion, in H1299 cells under non-cytotoxic conditions, with TTE showing stronger effects. In HCT116 human colon cancer cells, a similar pattern of inhibition was demonstrated against the metastatic events, accompanied by reduced levels of matrix metalloproteinase-2 and -9. Our results indicate that teff extracts exhibit in vitro anti-growth and anti-metastatic activities, which are enhanced by thermal treatment of teff.

Abstract
Despite considerable advances in interventions and treatment, there is a high mortality rate in patients with myocardial infarction (MI). This is the first study to investigate the protective effects of 3, 4-dihydroxybenzoic acid against isoproterenol induced MI in rats. MI was induced by isoproterenol (100-mg/kg body weight) in rats. Then, rats were treated with 3, 4-dihydroxybenzoic acid (16-mg/kg body weight) for 2 weeks. Serum creatine kinase-MB, cardiac troponin-T, cardiac troponin-I, and heart thiobarbituric acid reactive substances were significantly (p < 0.05) increased and heart superoxide dismutase and catalase activities were significantly (p < 0.05) reduced in isoproterenol-induced myocardial infarcted rats. Isoproterenol induction significantly (p < 0.05) elevated the plasma homocysteine and serum high sensitivity-C-reactive protein levels. Furthermore, an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, reverse transcription polymerase chain study, and immunohistochemical (IHC) staining revealed significantly (p < 0.05) elevated levels and expression of serum/myocardial nuclear factor-κB, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, interleukin-1 beta, and Interleukin-6 and significantly (p < 0.05) reduced levels/expression of serum/myocardial interleukin-10 in myocardial infarcted rats. Nevertheless, isoproterenol-induced rats treated with 3, 4-dihydroxybenzoic acid considerably (p < 0.05) attenuated all the biochemical, molecular, and IHC parameters investigated and inhibited oxidative stress and inflammation and protected the heart, through its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory mechanisms.

Abstract
Myocardial ischemia (MI) is a significant contributor to ischemic heart diseases like angina pectoris and myocardial infarction. Reactive oxygen species produced during MI can trigger lipid peroxidation, damaging cell structure and function. Salvia miltiorrhiza (SM) has been widely used clinically in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases. However, in the process of rooting, the aboveground parts of this plant are usually discarded by tons. To make better use of these plant resources, the phenolic acids extracted and purified from the aerial part of SM were studied and chemically transformed, and the potential protective effect and possible mechanism of salvianolic acids containing a higher content of salvianolic acid A on MI were obtained. The transformed products of SM stem-leaves total phenolic acids with 8.16 % salvianolic acid A showed a better protective effect on the isoproterenol (ISO)-induced acute MI injury rat model. It can improve ST segment changes and has good antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anticoagulant effects. In addition, the dysbiosis of gut microbiota and the related metabolic levels of short chain fatty acids (SCFAs), phenylalanine and glycerophospholipids were improved. This was achieved by reducing the abundance of Bacteroides, Faecalibaculum, and L-phenylalanine levels. In addition, the abundance of probiotics in Butyricoccus, Roseburia, and norank_f_Eubacterium_coprostanoligenes_group, as well as the contents of propionic acid and isobutyric acid, LPCs and PCs were increased. In conclusion, total phenolic acids of SM stem-leaves showed protective effects against ISO-induced rats, especially the strongest effect after conversion, which is a new option for the prevention and treatment of MI.

Abstract
Persimmon fruit processing-derived waste and by-products, such as peels and pomace, are important sources of dietary fiber and phytochemicals. Revalorizing these by-products could help promote circular nutrition and agricultural sustainability while tackling dietary deficiencies and chronic diseases. In this study, fiber-rich fractions were prepared from the by-products of Sharoni and Brilliant Red persimmon varieties. These fractions were quantified for their phenolic composition and assessed for their ability to promote the growth of beneficial human colonic Firmicutes species and for their in vitro anti-inflammatory potential. Gallic and protocatechuic acids, delphinidin, and cyanidin were the main phenolics identified. Faecalibacterium prausnitzii strains showed significantly higher growth rates in the presence of the Brilliant Red fraction, generating more than double butyrate as a proportion of the total short-chain fatty acids (39.5% vs. 17.8%) when compared to glucose. The fiber-rich fractions significantly decreased the inflammatory effect of interleukin-1β in Caco-2 cells, and the fermented fractions (both from Sharoni and Brilliant Red) significantly decreased the inflammatory effect of interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor-α in the RAW 264.7 cells. Therefore, fiber-rich fractions from persimmon by-products could be part of nutritional therapies as they reduce systemic inflammation, promote the growth of beneficial human gut bacteria, and increase the production of beneficial microbial metabolites such as butyrate.

Abstract
A new salvianolic acid derivative, (7'E)-(7S, 8S)-salvianolic acid V (1), together with four previously described compounds (2-5) were obtained from the n-butanol fraction of Salvia miltiorrhiza flowers. Their structures were established by a series of spectroscopic methods, and the absolute configuration of 1 was determined by electronic circular dichroism (ECD) calculation. Salvianolic acids (1) and phenolic acids (2-4) showed stronger DPPH free radical scavenging abilities and certain protective effects against H2O2-induced human skin fibroblast (HSF) cells oxidative damage, in which compound 1 (IC50 7.12 μM) possessed more noticeable free radical scavenging activity than the positive control vitamin C (IC50 14.98 μM).

Abstract
Protocatechuic acid (PCA) is a water-soluble polyphenol compound that is extracted from certain fruits and plants or obtained from glucose fermentation. Several in vivo and in vitro studies have determined that PCA has protective effects against the toxicity of natural and chemical toxicants. We searched these articles in PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus with appropriate keywords from inception up to August 2023. Forty-nine studies were found about protective effects of PCA against drug toxicity, metal toxicity, toxins, chemical toxicants, and some other miscellaneous toxicants. PCA indicates these protective effects by suppression of oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis. PCA reduces reactive oxygen/nitrogen species (RONS) and enhances the level of antioxidant parameters mainly through the activation of the Nrf-2 signaling pathway. PCA also decreases the levels of inflammatory mediators via downregulating the TLR-4-mediated IKBKB/NF-κB and MAPK/Erk signaling pathways. In addition, PCA inhibits apoptosis by lowering the expression of Bax, caspase-3, and caspase-9 along with enhancing the level of the antiapoptotic protein Bcl-2. Further evaluation, especially in humans, is necessary to confirm PCA as a potential therapeutic approach to intervene in such toxicities.

Abstract
As the first line of defense, the skin is equipped with various physiological mechanisms positioned to prevent incoming oxidative damage from numerous environmental insults. With persistent exposure to the environment, understanding ways to augment the skin defenses is paramount in protecting from premature aging. In this study, we investigated the ability of five dietary phenolic metabolites, typically found in the bloodstream after wild blueberry consumption, to successfully defend the skin from UV light exposure in a novel ex vivo co-culture model of human skin explants and primary endothelial cells. Skin explants, placed in transwell inserts, were exposed to UV, and subsequently co-cultured with endothelial cells. When the endothelial cells had been pretreated with the bioactive metabolites at physiological concentrations (hippuric acid 3000 nM, isoferulic acid 1000 nM, salicylic acid 130 nM, benzoic acid 900 nM, α-hydroxyhippuric acid 400 nM) cutaneous damage was prevented on the co-cultured with UV-challenged skin explants. Co-culture with non-pretreated endothelial cells did not protect skin explants. Specifically, the pretreatment was able to reduce skin lipid peroxidation (measured as 4-hydroxynonenal protein adducts), and pro-inflammatory enzymes such as cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2) and NADPH oxidase 4 (NOX-4). Furthermore, pretreatment with the metabolites prevented UV-induced release of inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β and IL-8 as well as nitric oxides (NO) levels. In addition, the metabolites showed an impressive ability to prevent the loss of cutaneous structural proteins including involucrin and collagen type 1. Of note, endothelial cells cultured with UV exposed skin explants exhibited increased oxidative stress demonstrated by heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) up-regulation which was significantly prevented in the metabolite treated models. These findings highlight the ability of dietary polyphenolic metabolites to improve cutaneous defenses against extrinsic stressors.

Abstract
Multifunctional hydrogel adhesives are highly desirable in wound healing applications, yet their preparation often requires complex material system design to achieve. Herein, a straightforward one-pot two-step polymerization method is developed to prepare adhesive hydrogels for wound dressing based on protocatechuic acid (PCA), polyacrylic acid (PAA), and polyamidoamine-epichlorohydrin (PAE), where PCA provides the catechol groups for strong adhesion, PAA serves as the primary polymer matrix, and PAE acts as a bridge connecting PCA and PAA. This design results in a PAA-PAE-PCA hydrogel having a remarkable instant 90-degree peeling interfacial toughness of 431 J m-2 on porcine skin, which is further amplified to 615 J m-2 after 30 minutes. The hydrogel also possesses the desired features for wound dressing, such as self-healing, antioxidant, anti-UV and antibacterial properties, good cytocompatibility, strong adhesion in use and weak adhesion on removal, as well as reversible and wet adhesion. Finally, in vivo data reveal that the PAA-PAE-PCA hydrogels can significantly accelerate wound healing, as evidenced by a noticeable reduction in the wound area and a diminished inflammatory response. Collectively, these results endorse the obtained multifunctional hydrogel as a promising candidate for wound healing and related fields.

Abstract
Cornelian cherry fruits contain a wide range of phenolic acids, flavonoids, and other secondary metabolites. Selected flavonoids may inhibit the perceiving of bitterness, however, the full mechanism with all TAS2R bitter taste receptors is not known. The aim of the study was to determine the inhibitory effect of Cornus mas phenolics against the bitterness receptors TAS2R13 and TAS2R3 through functional in vitro assays and coupling studies. The overall effect was validated by analysing the inhibition of the receptors activity in cells treated with tested cornelian cherry extracts. The strength of interaction with both TAS2R receptors varied between studied compounds with different binding affinity. Most compounds bonded with the TAS2R3 receptor through a long-distant hydrophobic interaction with Trp89A and π-π orbital overlapping-between phenolic and tryptophane aromatic rings. For TAS2R13 observed were various mechanisms of interaction with the compounds. Nonetheless, naringin and quercetin had most similar binding affinity to chloroquine and denatonium-the model agonists for the receptor.

Abstract
Background: Vibrio parahaemolyticus is a pathogenic bacterium that affects shrimp aquaculture; its infection can lead to severe production losses of up to 90%. On the other hand, plant phenolic compounds have emerged as a promising alternative to combat bacterial infections. The antibacterial and anti-virulence activity of the plant phenolic compounds quercetin, morin, vanillic acid, and protocatechuic acid against two strains of V. parahaemolyticus (Vp124 and Vp320) was evaluated. Methods: The broth microdilution test was carried out to determine phenolic compounds' antibacterial activity. Moreover, the biofilm-forming ability of V. parahaemolyticus strains in the presence of phenolic compounds was determined by total biomass staining assay using the cationic dye crystal violet. The semisolid agar displacement technique was used to observe the effect of phenolic compounds on the swimming-like motility of V. parahaemolyticus. Results: Results showed that phenolic compounds inhibited both strains effectively, with minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) ranging from 0.8 to 35.03 mM. Furthermore, at 0.125 - 0.5 × MIC of phenolic compounds, V. parahaemolyticus biofilms biomass was reduced by 63.22 - 92.68%. Also, quercetin and morin inhibited the motility of both strains by 15.86 - 23.64% (Vp124) and 24.28 - 40.71% (Vp320). Conclusions: The results suggest that quercetin, morin, vanillic, and protocatechuic acids may be potential agents for controlling V. parahaemolyticus.

Abstract
Aims/Objectives: Cisplatin (CIS) is widely used in the treatment of various malignant tumors. The aim of study is to determine the potential protective effects of protocatechuic acid (PCA) on the brain in neurotoxicity induced by CIS in rats.Materials and methods: Forty rats were divided into four groups: 1-Control group: 2- PCA group: PCA was administered orally at a dose of 100 mg/kg/day for 5 weeks. 3-CIS group: 5 mg/kg/week of CIS was administered intraperiteonally 4-PCA + CIS group: The rats were given PCA orally daily for 5 weeks and CIS of 5 mg/kg/week. The brain tissues were used for histopathological examinations and for total antioxidant capacity (TAC), total oxidative state (TOS), oxidative stress index (OSI), tumornecrosis factor-alpha (T NF-α), interleukin 6 (IL-6) Interleukin 1 beta (IL-1β), acetylcholinesterase (AChE), glutamate, gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA), dopamine analyzes in ELISA. WBC, RBC, hemoglobin and hematocrit levels were measured.Results: PCA + CIS group compared to CIS group TOS, OSI, T NF-α, IL-6, IL-1β, AChE, glutamate, WBC levels decreased significantly, while TAC and GABA levels increased statistically significant. With this study, P CA corrected the deterioration in the oxidant / antioxidant status, suppressed neuro-inflammation, decreased AChE activity, partially normalized neurotransmitters, and decreased the increased WBC count. Necrosis seen in the CIS group in histopathological examinations was never seen in the PCA + CIS group.Conclusions: PCA may provide therapeutic benefit when used in conjunction with CIS.

Abstract
Inflammation has been shown to trigger a wide range of chronic diseases, particularly inflammatory diseases. As a result, the focus of research has been on anti-inflammatory drugs and foods. In recent years, the field of medicinal and edible homology (MEH) has developed rapidly in both medical and food sciences, with 95% of MEH being associated with plants. Phenolic acids are a crucial group of natural bioactive substances found in medicinal and edible homologous plants (MEHPs). Their anti-inflammatory activity is significant as they play a vital role in treating several inflammatory diseases. These compounds possess enormous potential for developing anti-inflammatory drugs and functional foods. However, their development is far from satisfactory due to their diverse structure and intricate anti-inflammatory mechanisms. In this review, we summarize the various types, structures, and distribution of MEHP phenolic acids that have been identified as of 2023. We also analyze their anti-inflammatory activity and molecular mechanisms in inflammatory diseases through NF-κB, MAPK, NLRP3, Nrf2, TLRs, and IL-17 pathways. Additionally, we investigate their impact on regulating the composition of the gut microbiota and immune responses. This analysis lays the groundwork for further exploration of the anti-inflammatory structure-activity relationship of MEHP phenolic acids, aiming to inspire structural optimization and deepen our understanding of their mechanism, and provides valuable insights for future research and development in this field.

Abstract
Phenolic acids still gain significant attention due to their potential antimicrobial and cytotoxic properties. In this study, we have investigated the antimicrobial of six phenolic acids, namely chlorogenic, caffeic, p-coumaric, rosmarinic, gallic and tannic acids in the concentration range 0.5-500 μM, against Escherichia coli and Lactobacillus rhamnosus. The antimicrobial activity was evaluated using the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide colorimetric assay. Additionally, the cytotoxic effects of these phenolic acids on two cancer cell lines, the colorectal adenocarcinoma Caco-2 cell line and Dukes' type C colorectal adenocarcinoma DLD-1 cell line was examined. To further understand the molecular properties of these phenolic acids, quantum chemical calculations were performed using the Gaussian 09W program. Parameters such as ionization potential, electron affinity, electronegativity, chemical hardness, chemical softness, dipole moment, and electrophilicity index were obtained. The lipophilicity properties represented by logP parameter was also discussed. This study provides a comprehensive evaluation of the antimicrobial and cytotoxic activity of six phenolic acids, compounds deliberately selected due to their chemical structure. They are derivatives of benzoic or cinnamic acids with the increasing number of hydroxyl groups in the aromatic ring. The integration of experimental and computational methodologies provides a knowledge of the molecular characteristics of bioactive compounds and partial explanation of the relationship between the molecular structure and biological properties. This knowledge aids in guiding the development of bioactive components for use in dietary supplements, functional foods and pharmaceutical drugs.

Abstract
The therapeutic efficacy of chemotherapy drugs can be effectively improved through the dual effects of their combination with natural polyphenols and the delivery of targeted DNA nanostructures. In this work, the interactions of topotecan (TPT), (+)-catechin (CAT), or protocatechuic acid (PCA) with a pH-sensitive DNA tetrahedron (MUC1-TD) in the binary and ternary systems at pHs 5.0 and 7.4 were investigated by fluorescence spectroscopy and calorimetry. The intercalative binding mode of TPT/CAT/PC to MUC1-TD was confirmed, and their affinity was ranked in the order of PCA > CAT > TPT. The effects of the pH-sensitivity of MUC1-TD and different molecular structures of CAT and PCA on the loading, release, and cytotoxicity of TPT were discussed. The weakened interaction under acidic conditions and the co-loading of CAT/PCA, especially PCA, improved the release of TPT loaded by MUC1-TD. The targeting of MUC1-TD and the synergistic effect with CAT/PCA, especially CAT, enhanced the cytotoxicity of TPT on A549 cells. For L02 cells, the protective effect of CAT/PCA reduced the damage caused by TPT. The single or combined TPT loaded by MUC1-TD was mainly concentrated in the nucleus of A549 cells. This work will provide key information for the combined application of TPT and CAT/PCA loaded by DNA nanostructures to improve chemotherapy efficacy and reduce side effects.

Abstract
Broccoli is commonly consumed as food and as medicine. However, comprehensive metabolic profiling of two broccoli varieties, Romanesco broccoli (RB) and purple broccoli (PB), in relation to their anticholinergic activity has not been fully disclosed. A total of 110 compounds were tentatively identified using UPLC-Q-TOF-MS metabolomics. Distinctively different metabolomic profiles of the two varieties were revealed by principal component analysis (PCA). Furthermore, by volcano diagram analysis, it was found that PB had a significantly higher content of phenolic acids, flavonoids, and glucosinolates, indicating the different beneficial health potentials of PB that demonstrated higher antioxidant and anticholinergic activities. Moreover, Pearson's correlation analysis revealed 18 metabolites, mainly phenolic and sulfur compounds, as the main bioactive. The binding affinity of these biomarkers to the active sites of acetyl- and butyryl-cholinesterase enzymes was further validated using molecular docking studies. Results emphasize the broccoli significance as a functional food and nutraceutical source and highlight its beneficial effects against Alzheimer's disease.

Abstract
The chemical constituents from Leucas ciliata belonging to Leucas genus in Lamiaceae were systematically explored by silica gel column chromatography, ODS column chromatography, Sephadex LH-20 gel column chromatography, and preparative high performance liquid chromatography, and seventeen phenolic acids were isolated. The chemical structures of the compounds were identified by their physicochemical properties, spectroscopic data, and literature. They were 4-hydroxyphenethyl ethyl succinate(1), 4-hydroxyphenethyl methyl succinate(2), 2-(4-hydroxyphenyl) ethyl acetate(3), p-hydroxyphenylethyl anisate(4), cassia cis-trans diphenylpropanoid(5), p-coumaric acid(6), 3,4-dihydroxybenzenepropionic acid methyl ester(7), caffeic acid(8), trans-p-hydroxyl ethyl cinnamate(9), methyl p-hydroxybenzeneacetate(10), 4-hydroxyphenethyl alcohol(11), syringic acid(12), vanillin(13), protocatechuic acid(14), salicylic acid(15), p-hydroxybenzaldehyde(16), and diorcinol(17). Among them, compound 1 was new, and compounds 2-10, 12, 14, and 16-17 were isolated from the plants belonging to Leucas genus for the first time. All compounds were obtained from L. ciliata for the first time. The anti-inflammatory activity of compounds 1-17 on NO production in lipopolysaccharide(LPS)-induced mouse leukemia cells of monocyte macrophage(RAW264. 7) cells was evaluated. The results showed that compounds 5, 7, and 9 exhibited significant anti-inflammatory activity, with IC50values of(10. 14±0. 36)-(21. 17±0. 11) μmol·L~(-1).
