Seasonality and children's blood lead levels: developing a predictive model using climatic variables and blood lead data from Indianapolis, Indiana, Syracuse, New York, and New Orleans, Louisiana (USA)

On a community basis, urban soil contains a potentially large reservoir of accumulated lead. This study was undertaken to explore the temporal relationship between pediatric blood lead (BPb), weather, soil moisture, and dust in Indianapolis, Indiana; Syracuse, New York; and New Orleans, Louisiana. The Indianapolis, Syracuse, and New Orleans pediatric BPb data were obtained from databases of 15,969, 14,467, and 2,295 screenings, respectively, collected between December 1999 and November 2002, January 1994 and March 1998, and January 1998 and May 2003, respectively. These average monthly child BPb levels were regressed against several independent variables: average monthly soil moisture, particulate matter < 10 microm in diameter (PM10), wind speed, and temperature. Of temporal variation in urban children's BPb, 87% in Indianapolis (R2 = 0.87, p = 0.0004), 61% in Syracuse (R2 = 0.61, p = 0.0012), and 59% in New Orleans (R2 = 0.59, p = 0.0000078) are explained by these variables. A conceptual model of urban Pb poisoning is suggested: When temperature is high and evapotranspiration maximized, soil moisture decreases and soil dust is deposited. Under these combined weather conditions, Pb-enriched PM10 dust disperses in the urban environment and causes elevated Pb dust loading. Thus, seasonal variation of children's Pb exposure is probably caused by inhalation and ingestion of Pb brought about by the effect of weather on soils and the resulting fluctuation in Pb loading.

Hydraulic Lift Increases Herbivory by Diaprepes abbreviatus Larvae and Persistence of Steinernema riobrave in Dry Soil

Citrus seedlings were grown in double pots that separated the root systems into discrete lower and upper zones to test the hypothesis that hydraulic lift affects persistence and efficacy of entomopathogenic nematodes. Three treatments were established: (i) both pots were irrigated at water potential </= -15 kPa (no drought); (ii) only the bottom pot was irrigated (partial drought); (iii) neither pot was irrigated (complete drought). Steinernema riobrave infective juveniles (IJ) were added to the soil in the top pots of all treatments. During 27 days, the water potential in soil in the top pots of both the partial and complete drought treatments declined to ca. -160 kPa. A greater number of nematodes (P </= 0.01) persisted in soil as motile IJ under conditions of partial drought (143/pot) than under no drought (6.1/pot) or complete drought (4.4/pot). A second experiment was initiated with the same treatments as the first, except that only half of the 20 replicates in each moisture regime were inoculated with nematodes. After 15 days, all top pots were irrigated and two larvae of the insect Diaprepes abbreviatus were added to all of the top pots in each treatment. Irrigation regimes were reinstituted until water potential in the top pots under partial and complete drought had again declined to ca. -150 kPa and the experiment was terminated. In the absence of nematodes, the damage to tap roots caused by D. abbreviatus feeding under partial drought and complete drought was 80% and 32%, respectively, of that under no drought. Numbers of motile IJ in soil were greater under conditions of partial drought (736/pot) than under complete drought (2.0/pot) or no drought (7.2/pot). Survival of D. abbreviatus and insect damage to roots were reduced by the presence of S. riobrave to a greater extent under partial drought as compared to other treatments. Hydraulic lift from the lower to the upper rhizosphere appears to have modulated the effect of dry soil conditions on feeding behavior of D. abbreviatus and created favorable conditions for persistence and efficacy of the entomopathogenic nematode.

Flooding tolerance of Carex species in relation to field distribution and aerenchyma formation

The flooding tolerance of Carex species was studied in relation to their field distribution and their capacity to form root aerenchyma under controlled conditions. In an alpine meadow, six Carex species were selected which were distributed in a clear zonation correlating with water content of the soil. Carex sempervirens and C. ferruginea were only found on nonflooded soil, the latter species preferring moister conditions. Carex davalliana and C. nigra were both associated with water-saturated soil, whereas C. limosa and C. rostrata preferred partially submerged conditions. Carex davalliana and C. limosa were bound to flooded soils with a relatively high redox potential and horizontally flowing groundwater. Carex rostrata and C. nigra grew in stagnant soil-flooded conditions with low soil redox potentials. The amount of aerenchyma in the roots of all species increased when grown in oxygen-deficient stagnant agar. This increase in root porosity, combined with increased root diameter, presumably improved internal aeration of the roots. Although all species survived experimental soil flooding, partial submergence was lethal to C. sempervirens and, surprisingly, also to the wetland species C. davalliana. Carex ferruginea showed a reduced growth rate during partial submergence. The three other species, all wetland plants, reached highest biomass production under soil-flooded and partially submerged conditions, with slower growth on free-draining soil. It is concluded that aerenchyma is not constitutive in the Carex species under study, and is best developed in Carex species from wetlands. Species with less aerenchyma perform poorly when soil-flooded, but conditions of partial submergence could even affect species with a considerable amount of root aerenchyma.

Effect of Soil Depth and Moisture on the Vertical Distribution of Steinernema riobrave (Nematoda: Steinernematidae)

The effect of soil moisture on the distribution of Steinernema riobrave in a sand column was determined. Larvae of Pectinophora gossypiella were used to detect S. riobrave infective juveniles (IJ) in each 2.5-cm section of 30-cm-long soil columns. Soil moisture was determined for each section and related to the numbers of nematodes recovered from infected insect baits. Infective juveniles of S. riobrave applied on the sand column surface showed some degree of positive geotaxis. IJ in soil columns with a consistent moisture gradient grouped in the upper 12.7 cm within a water potential range of 40 to 0.0055 MPa (2% to 14% moisture). Nematodes in sand columns that were gradually dehydrating moved down the soil column, aggregating on the 28th day between 15-23 cm in depth. Nematode redistribution over time allowed IJ to remain within a water potential range of 0.1 to 0.012 MPa (5.2% to 9.5% moisture).

Effects of Seasonal and Site Factors on Xiphinema index Populations in Two California Vineyards

Sampling of Xiphinema index for 2 years (1993-95) in two California vineyards indicated that a greater number of nematodes occurred during the winter months. The number of juveniles increased four-fold from December 1993 to January 1994, indicating a high reproductive rate during this time. Extremely high or low soil temperatures corresponded to low nematode numbers. Samples were taken from 0 to 31 cm and 31 to 62 cm deep both within and between the vine rows. Numbers of nematodes were greatest at the 0- to 31-cm depth in one vineyard with a loamy sand soil, and at a depth of 31 to 62 cm in the second vineyard, which had a silt loam soil. In both vineyards, X. index population densities were greater within the vine row.

Population Changes of Tylenchulus semipenetrans Under Localized Versus Uniform Drought in the Citrus Root Zone

Population development of Tylenchulus semipenetrans in dry soil was investigated in a greenhouse study. Citrus seedlings were grown in sandy soil in vertical tubes with upper and lower sections. Nematode population densities in the upper tubes were measured at 16, 23, and 37 days, post-treatment. Three treatments consisted of i) irrigating both tubes when soil water potential reached -1 5 kPa (non-drought), ii) irrigating only the bottom tube (local drought), and iii) no irrigation (uniform drought). Soil water potential in the upper tubes did not differ under local and uniform drought during the first 16 days post-treatment, when it approached - 125 kPa. Thereafter, the water potential of soil under uniform drought continued to decrease, while that under local drought stabilized at approximately -150 kPa. Treatments had no consistent effects on female T. semipenetrans counts from soil or roots. However, after 37 days, numbers of eggs, juvenile, and male nematodes per gram of root under local drought were more than 2.4-fold greater than those under non-drought or uniform drought. Numbers of juvenile and male nematodes in soil were 6.5 times higher under local drought than under non-drought after 37 days. Nematodes did not survive in soil under uniform drought. Most of the eggs recovered on each date, from roots under local and non-drought, hatched within 35 days. Sixteen days of uniform drought reduced cumulative egg hatch to 51%, and almost no eggs hatched after 23 and 37 days of uniform drought. Thus, the response of T. semipenetrans to dry soil is fundamentally different, depending on whether all or part of the rhizosphere experiences drought. These data and field observations suggest that hydraulic lift via the root xylem may prolong the activity of some nematodes and possibly other rhizosphere-inhabiting organisms in dry soil.

Spatial Patterns of Belonolaimus spp. Among and Within Citrus Orchards on Florida's Central Ridge

A survey was initiated to determine the incidence of Belonolaimus spp. (sting nematodes) in citrus orchards in the central ridge region of Florida, following widespread damage by these nematodes to young trees replanted after freezing weather in 1989-90. Sting nematodes were detected in 50% of 210 samples and in 64% of 84 orchards surveyed. More orchards in Polk County were infested with sting nematodes (82%) than in counties to the north (36%) or south (48%). Principal component analysis of morphometric data separated six of seven sting nematode populations in northeastern Polk County from six populations in adjacent regions. Stylet:tail ratio for nematodes in northeastern Polk County tend to be > 1.0 and were << 1.0 for all other populations. Patchiness of nematodes within an orchard was associated with stunted trees (23% smaller), reduced root mass density (25% lower), and low fruit yield (57% reduction). Soil texture did not vary among trees of different size in the orchard, but soil water potential between irrigation events was highest beneath small trees with low root mass density. Results of the survey indicate that the incidence of sting nematodes in orchards on the central ridge is much higher than previously estimated and that sting nematodes can cause substantial damage in replanted orchards. Further research is needed to evaluate the significance of sting nematode population variability and its relationship to citrus crop loss in Florida.

Spatial patterns of entomopathogenic nematodes in microcosms: implications for laboratory experiments

LABORATORY MICROCOSMS WERE USED TO: i) measure the effects of soil moisture on survival of Steinernema riobravis and ii) investigate the suitability of using microcosms to study motility and survival of these nematodes. Nematodes recovered from soil contained in petri dishes declined by more than 95% during 7 days, whereas nematodes recovered from the inner surfaces of dishes increased 35-fold. After 7 days in dishes, >20 times as many nematodes were recovered from dish surfaces than from soil. Nematodes exhibited a negative geotropism; greater numbers of nematodes were recovered from the lid surfaces than from the surfaces of dishes. Survivorship of nematodes in soil in plastic centrifuge tubes was somewhat greater than in petri dishes, and fewer nematodes ascended above the soil line in tubes than dishes. Downward migration of nematodes was inversely related to soil column diameter, possibly due to relatively unimpeded movement along container surfaces. An assay was developed by which nematodes were rinsed from the inner surfaces of centrifuge tubes into the soil. The resulting slurry was then processed on Baermann trays to recover motile nematodes. Nematode survival in soil in centrifuge tubes was higher at soil moistures between 2-4% than at lower (0.5-1.0%) and higher (4.0-12.0%) moisture levels. Survival of S. riobravis may be enhanced by quiescence induced by moisture deficits.

Infectivity, Development, and Reproduction of Heterodera cajani on Pigeonpea: Influence of Soil Moisture and Temperature

The effect of soil moisture on penetration, development, and reproduction of Heterodera cajani on pigeonpea (cv. ICPL 87) was investigated in growth chambers held at 20 and 25 C, and in a greenhouse where temperature fluctuated between 25 and 32 C. Averaged across temperatures, the percentage of juveniles that penetrated roots was 34.3, 31.8, 8.8, and 3.7% at 24, 32, 16, and 40% soil moisture levels, respectively. Numbers of females per root system 4 weeks after infesting soil with second-stage juveniles was 79.6 at 24%, 65.3 at 32%, 26.1 at 16%, and 2.9 at 40% soil moisture. Nematode reproduction was greatest (P = 0.001) at 24% soil moisture and 25 C. Reproductive factor was 19.4 at 24%, 15.2 at 32%, 5.7 at 16%, and 0.5 at 40% soil moisture level. Nematode penetration, development, and reproduction at different moisture levels were greater (P = 0.01) at 25 and 25-32 C than at 20 C. Plant growth was retarded at 40% soil moisture and 20 C in comparison to that at 24 and 32% moisture levels and 25 C. This information on influence of temperature and soil moisture will be helpful in developing models for predicting changes in H. cajani densities in pigeonpea fields during rainy and postrainy dry seasons in the semi-arid tropics.

Soybean Photosynthesis and Yield as Influenced by Heterodera glycines, Soil Type and Irrigation

The effects of soil types and soil water matric pressure on the Heterodera glycines-Glycine max interaction were examined in microplots in 1988 and 1989. Reproduction of H. glycines was restricted in fine-textured soils as compared with coarse-textured ones. Final population densities of this pathogen in both years of the study were greater in nonirrigated soils than in irrigated soils. The net photosynthetic rate of soybean (per unit area of leaf) was suppressed only slightly or not at all in response to infection by H. glycines and other stresses. Relative soybean-yield suppression in response to H. glycines was not affected by water content in fine-textured soils, but slopes of the damage functions were steepest in sand, sandy loam, and muck soils at high water content (irrigated plots). Yield restriction of soybean in response to this pathogen under irrigation was equal to or greater than the yield suppression under dry conditions. Although yield potential may be elevated by irrigation when soil-water content is inadequate, supplemental irrigation cannot be used to circumvent nematode damage to soybean.

Recovery and Longevity of Egg Masses of Meloidogyne incognita during Simulated Winter Survival

Effects of soil matrix potential on longevity of egg masses of Meloidogyne incognita were determined during simulated winter conditions. Egg masses were recovered from isolated root fragments incubated in field soil at matrix potentials of -0.1, -0.3, -1.0, and -4.0 bars throughout winter survival periods of 10 weeks for tomato roots and 12 weeks for cotton roots. Egg masses were more superficial on cotton roots than on tomato roots and were more easily dislodged from cotton roots during recovery of root fragments by elutriation. The rate of decline in numbers of eggs and J2 per egg mass was greater in wet as compared to dry soils (P = 0.01), with the relationship between numbers of eggs and J2 per egg mass and time being best described by quadratic models. Percentage hatch of recovered eggs declines linearly with time at soil matrix potentials of -0.1 and -0.3 bars, but at -1.0 and -4.0 bars the percentage hatch of recovered eggs increased before declining. Effects of soil matrix potential on numbers of eggs per egg mass and percentage hatch of recovered eggs were consistent with previous reports that low soil moisture inhibits egg hatch before affecting egg development. Estimations of egg population densities during winter survival periods will be affected by ability to recover infected root fragments from the soil without dislodging associated egg masses. There is a need for procedures for extraction of egg masses not attached to roots from the soil.

Stem nematode-fusarium wilt complex in alfalfa as related to irrigation management at harvest time

A high moisture level in the top 10 cm of soil at time of cutting of alfalfa increased the incidence of plant mortality and Fusarium wilt in soil infested with Ditylenchus dipsaci and Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. medicaginis in greenhouse and field microplot studies. Ranger alfalfa, susceptible to both D. dipsaci and F. oxysporum f. sp. medicaginis, was less persistent than Moapa 69 (nematode susceptible and Fusarium wilt resistant) and Lahontan alfalfa (nematode resistant with low Fusarium wilt resistance). In the greenhouse, the persistence of Ranger, Moapa 69, and Lahontan alfalfa plants was 46%, 64%, and 67% respectively, in nematode + fungus infested soil at high soil moisture at time of cutting. This compared to 74%, 84%, and 73% persistence of Ranger, Moapa 69, and Lahontan, respectively, at low soil moisture at time of cutting. Shoot weights as a percentage of uninoculated controls at the high soil moisture level were 38%, 40%, and 71% for Ranger, Moapa 69, and Lahontan, respectively. Low soil moisture at time of cutting negated the effect D. dipsaci on plant persistence and growth of subsequent cuttings, and reduced Fusarium wilt of plants in the nematode-fungus treatment; shoot weights were 75%, 90%, and 74% of uninoculated controls for Ranger, Moapa 69, and Lahontan. Similar results were obtained in the field microplot study, and stand persistence and shoot weights were less in nematode + fungus-infested soil at the high soil-moisture level (early irrigation) than at the low soil-moisture level (late irrigation).

Effects of high soil moisture on formation of ectomycorrhizas and growth of karri (Eucalyptus diversicolor) seedlings inoculated with Descolea maculata, Pisolithus tinctorius and Laccaria laccata

Seedlings of Eucalyptus diversicolor P. Muell. I noculated with the ectomycorrhizal fungi Descolea maculata Bougher (two isolates), Pisolithus tinctorius (Pers.) Coker & Couch and Laccaria laccata (Scop, ex Fr.) Berk. & Br. were raised under glasshouse conditions in a yellow sand at a gradient of four soil moisture levels ranging from above field capacity to near waterlogged. All fungi enhanced growth of seedlings above that of uninoculated seedlings, but in soils near saturation there was no response to inoculation. Reduced mycorrhizal formation in relation to increasing soil moisture occurred to various degrees for all fungi. This was particularly marked with Pisolithus tinctorius. In contrast, Laccaria laccata maintained a relatively high number of mycorrhizal roots at all moisture levels applied, except at the wettest soil treatment. An isolate of D. maculata from a swamp environment did not produce a greater number of mycorrhizal roots at high soil moisture than an isolate of this species from a forest environment.

Influence of Environmental Factors on the Hatch and Survival of Meloidogyne incognita

The influence of soil temperature and moisture on Meloidogyne incognita (Kofoid and White) Chitwood was examined in relation to hatching and survival of second-stage juveniles (J2). Nematodes were cultured on cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L. cv. Acala SJ2) under field conditions to provide populations similar to those found in the field in late autumn. Egg masses were placed in a temperature range (9-12 C and 21 C), and hatch was measured over a period equivalent to 20 degree days > 10 C (DD10). Hatch occurred below the reported 18 C activity threshold, was restricted below 12 C, and was inhibited below 10 C. Soil moisture influence on hatch was measured by placing egg masses in Hesperia sandy loam and subjecting them to suction pressures ranging from -1.1 bars to -4 .5 bars. Suction potentials of less than -2 bars reduced hatch and less than -3 bars inhibited hatch. J2 were placed in sandy loam soil with soil moisture near field capacity, and their motility was measured over a period of 500 DD10. In the absence of a host, more than 90% of J2 became nonmotile over this period.

Effects of Environmental Factors and Cultural Practices on Parasitism of Alfalfa by Ditylenchus dipsaci

Cool humid weather enhanced development and reproduction of Ditylenchus dipsaci in alfalfa in laboratory and field studies in Utah. Relative humidity and nematode reproduction were positively correlated (P < 0.05), whereas air temperature and nematode reproduction were negatively correlated (P < 0.05). The greatest number of nematodes per gram of alfalfa tissue was found in nondormant Moapa alfalfa tissue at St. George during April, whereas the greatest numbers of nematodes were found in dormant Ranger alfalfa in June at West Jordan and Smithfield. There was 100% invasion of both resistant Lahontan and susceptible Ranger alfalfa plants at soil moisture levels of 61-94% field capacity. Fall burning of alfalfa to control weeds reduced, and spring burning increased, the incidence of invaded plants, nematodes per gram of plant tissue, and the mortality of susceptible Ranger (P < 0.01) and Moapa (P < 0.01) alfalfa plants over that of plants in nonburned control plots. Fall burning also reduced and spring burning increased the incidence of invaded plants (P < 0.05), but had no influence on nematodes per gram of plant tissue or the mortality of resistant Lahontan and Nevada Synthetic XX alfalfa over those of plants in control plots.

Anhydrobiosis in Pratylenchus penetrans and Tylenchorhynchus n. sp. in Cultivated Soils Cropped to Winter Rye

Anhydrobiotes of Pratylenchus penetrans were found in two cultivated soils sown to rye in southern Ontario during the growing season. Anhydrobiotes at the 0-2.5-cm depth were recovered from 9 and 6 of 11 samplings, respectively, of a Vineland silt loam and a Fox loamy sand during the dry summer of 1983. At the 2.5-15.0-cm depth, anhydrobiotes were recovered less frequently. In the summer of 1984, anhydrobiotes of P. penetrans were recovered once and anhydrobiotes of Tylenchorhynchus n. sp. twice in 11 samplings. The percentages of P. penetrans populations that were anhydrobiotes in 1983 and 1984 were closely related to soil moisture content and corresponding moisture tensions. Populations of P. penetrans were greatest in October in the lower soil depth, 2.5-15.0 cm; those of Tylenchorhynchus n. sp. were greater in the surface layer of soil, 0-2.5 cm, and peaked in August.

Vertical Migration of Meloidogyne chitwoodi and M. hapla under Controlled Temperature

Migratory ability of second-stage juveniles (J2) of two Meloidogyne chitwoodi races and a M. hapla population were compared in soil-filled columns at 12, 18, and 24 C. J2 of all populations migrated farthest at 18 C and least at 12 C. Nematode survival was significantly reduced (P = 0.05) at 24 C.M. chitwoodi J2 migrated further and in greater numbers than M. hapla J2 at all temperatures. A comparison with and without a host plant demonstrated no preferential migration toward the plant. Water percolation through the migration columns stimulated upward migration.

Influence of Edaphic Factors and Previous Crop on Pratylenchus spp. Population Densities in Potato

Root and soil samples from commercial potato fields were assayed for nematodes in 1983 and 1984. Pratylenchus spp. population densities in Suffolk County, New York, were consistently, though not always statistically, higher in potato fields that had been planted to rye or wheat rather than potatoes during the previous growing season. Regardless of the previous crop, population densities in the two potato production areas in Suffolk County differed significantly: population densities on the south fork were 1.9-5.5 times higher than those on the north fork. Species prevalence differed significantly on the two forks but was not related to the previous year's crop. P. penetrans and P. crenatus were found primarily on the north and south forks, respectively. Differences in species distribution were associated with differences in soil types. P. crenatus was usually found on loams and silt loams, but P. penetrans was found more frequently on sandy soils.

Anhydrobiosis in Pratylenchus penetrans

Anhydrobiotic survival of Pratylenchus penetrans was compared in several soil moisture regimes. Bodies of anhydrobiotic nematodes were coiled. In slow-dried soils, Vineland silt loam (VSL) and Fox loamy sand (FLS), 70 and 58% of the total P. penetrans populations were anhydrobiotic when soil moistures reached ca. 3% and water potential 15 kPa or greater. Coiling began at a much lower water potential in FLS than in VSL. In fast-dried soils, only 31 and 22% of the P. penetrans populations in the same two soil types had entered the anhydrobiotic state at comparable moistures. In the above soils, 76-96% of the P. penetrans were alive immediately after entering the anhydrobiotic state. In slow-dried VSL, some nematodes (1%) survived 770 days. In the other soils, all anhydrobiotic nematodes were dead after 438 days. Anhydrobiosis increased the ability of nematodes to survive subzero temperatures, but it did not increase their ability to survive temperatures above 40 C. Infectivity and reproductivity of rehydrated P. penetrans were not affected by anhydrobiosis.

Anhydrobiotic coiling of nematodes in soil

Nematodes of three genera (Acrobeloides sp., Aphelenchus avenae, and Scutellonema brachyurum) were induced to coil and enter anhydrobiosis in drying soil of two types: sandy loam and loamy sand. Coiling was studied in relationship to soil moisture characteristics. Coiling and the physiological state of anhydrobiosis occurred before the water in sandy soils reached a water potential of -15 bars. Coiling was maximum at 3-6 bars, depending on the soil type and nematode species. It appeared that induction of coiling and anhydrohiosis were determined by the physical forces exerted by the water film surrounding the nematode, which, for these three species, was 6-9 monomolecular layers of water, rather than the % moisture and relative humidity of the soil per se.

Effect of Tylenchorhynchus nudus on Growth of Kentucky Bluegrass

The effect of Tylenchorhynchus nudus on growth of Kentucky bluegrass was investigated under controlled environmental conditions in both a phytotron and a greenhouse. The nematode significantly reduced weights of clippings, crowns and roots. Pathogenicity was greater in sandy loam soil than in loam and was enhanced by submitting plants to nutrient and/or moisture stresses; soil nutrient level was most critical. The results suggest that T. nudus contributes significantly to summer decline of bluegrass lawns in South Dakota.

Meloidogyne hapla in Organic Soil: Effects of Environment on Hatch, Movement and Root Invasion

Using new techniques, hatch and movement of Meloidogyne hapla and nematode invasion o f lettuce roots growing in organic soil were studied under controlled soil conditions of temperature, moisture, O and CO. When O levels of 2.7, 5, 10, 21 and 40% with CO maintained at 0.03% were used, O below 21% or at 40% reduced nematode activities compared with those at 21%. When CO levels of 0.03, 0.33, 2.8, 10 and 30% with O maintained at 21% were used, all levels above 0.03% CO resulted in less activity than at 0.03% except for more invasion at 0.33% than at 0.03%. Results suggested M. hapla was tolerant of CO below 10% but adversely affected by 30% CO. Effect of O was influenced by the level of CO present. No larvae invaded roots at 3.2% O and 18.6% CO but hatch and movement occurred.
