Abstract
We report two cases of septic arthritis of the spine facet joint in two patients with no previous medical history. Clinical symptoms were consistent with a spondylodiscitis. Blood cultures were positive for Staphylococcus aureus. The infection was initially shown and precisely localised with magnetic resonance imaging, despite an initially negative or aspecific bone scintigraphy. Magnetic resonance imaging of the spine demonstrated infection involving the epidural space and paraspinal musculature and enhancement of the infected thoracic and lumbar facet joint after gadolinium injection.

Abstract
The ciliary neurotrophic factor receptor is critically involved in embryonic motor neuron development. Postnatally, it may contribute to neuronal maintenance and regeneration. In addition, pharmacological stimulation of the receptor may slow the progression of several neurodegenerative disorders. The widespread nervous system expression of ciliary neurotrophic factor receptor components and the effects of low ciliary neurotrophic factor concentrations on a wide variety of cells in culture combine to suggest that functional ciliary neurotrophic factor receptors are expressed by many classes of neurons in vivo. However, the in vivo signaling properties and distribution of functional ciliary neurotrophic factor receptors have not been directly determined. We developed a novel in vivo assay of functional ciliary neurotrophic factor receptors which revealed that, in the adult nervous system, cranial and spinal motor neurons are very sensitive to ciliary neurotrophic factor and display a rapid, robust increase in phospho-STAT3 in their dendrites, cell bodies and nuclei, which is specifically blocked by the ciliary neurotrophic factor receptor antagonist, AADH-CNTF. In distinct contrast, several other classes of ciliary neurotrophic factor receptor expressing neurons fail to increase phospho-STAT3 levels following ciliary neurotrophic factor treatment, even when ciliary neurotrophic factor is applied at high concentrations. Leukemia inhibitory factor and epidermal growth factor elicit the same cell-type-dependent pattern of phospho-STAT3 increases. Responsive and non-responsive neurons express comparable levels of STAT3.Therefore, in vivo ciliary neurotrophic factor receptor-initiated STAT3 signal transduction is regulated in a very cell-type-dependent manner. The present data suggest that at least some of this regulation occurs at the STAT3 tyrosine phosphorylation step. These unexpected results also suggest that other forms of receptor-initiated STAT3 signal transduction may be similarly regulated.

Abstract
Degradation of olive mill wastewater (OMW) by means of two chemical oxidation processes (Fenton's reagent and ozonation) and their consecutive treatments with aerobic microorganisms have been studied. Fenton's reagent treatment moderately reduces COD and to a greater extent the polyphenolic compounds. Ozonation contributed to low conversion of COD and moderate reduction of polyphenols. The aerobic biological treatments degrade to values higher than 70% and 90% for COD and polyphenolic compounds, respectively. A kinetic study has been carried out in each process, determining the representative kinetic parameters of each model.

Abstract
Several methods for the preparation of sterically stabilized immunoliposomes (SIL) have recently been described. This report examines an established method for coupling anti-CD34 My10 mAb to poly(ethylene glycol)-liposomes (PEG-liposomes) containing the anchor pyridyldithiopropionylamino-PEG-phosphatidylethanolamine (PDP-PEG-PE) via a cleavable disulfide bond. Efficient attachment of pyridyldithio-derivatized mAb took place (equivalent to coupling ca. 70% of total input protein) at 2 mol percent of the functionalized PEG-lipid. The My10-SIL bound specifically to CD34+ cells (human leukemic KG-1a and hematopoietic progenitor cells) and the extent of binding was a function of liposomal lipid concentration, the mAb density in the liposome surface and the CD34 cell expression. In mixtures with CD34- cells (CHO or Jurkat), CD34+KG-1a cells were determined by flow cytometry at percentages (1-4%) similar to those reported in clinical samples (such as cord blood, mobilized peripheral blood and bone marrow) using a direct immunostaining with My10-SIL. The disulfide bond was stable in cell culture medium (10% of fetal calf serum) during 8 h and cell-bound SIL can be released from cells by treatment with dithiothreitol as reducing agent under mild conditions (1 h of incubation with 50 mM DTT at 20 degrees C). SIL binding and subsequent dithiothreitol treatment did not influence the cell viability. Our approach should contribute to the development of targetable liposomal vehicles to CD34+ cells for use in ex vivo conditions as sorting of hematopoietic stem cells.

Abstract
Liver cirrhosis represents a worldwide health problem and is a major cause of mortality. Cirrhosis is the result of extensive hepatocyte death and fibrosis induced by chronic alcohol abuse and hepatitis B and C viruses. Successful gene therapy approaches to this disease may require both reversal of fibrosis and stimulation of hepatocyte growth. Urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA) may serve this function, as it is an initiator of the matrix proteolysis cascade and induces hepatocyte growth factor expression. In a rat cirrhosis model, a single iv administration of a replication-deficient adenoviral vector encoding a nonsecreted form of human uPA resulted in high production of functional uPA protein in the liver. This led to induction of collagenase expression and reversal of fibrosis with concomitant hepatocyte and improved liver function. Thus, uPA gene therapy may be an effective strategy for treating cirrhosis in humans.

Abstract
On the basis of molecular modeling studies, the 7-nitroindole nucleoside 1 was selected as a suitable photochemical precursor for photochemical generation of the C1' deoxyribosyl radical under irradiation, which led to 2'-deoxyribonolactone. The nitro-indole nucleoside derivatives 1a and 1b were prepared and their conformation was determined by X-ray crystallography and NMR spectroscopy. The photoreaction of these nucleosides gave the corresponding deoxyribonolactone derivatives efficiently, with release of 7-nitrosoindole. This reaction was successfully applied to synthesis of oligonucleotides containing the deoxyribonolactone lesion.

Abstract
The short variant of a functional length polymorphism in the promoter region of the serotonin transporter has been associated with several behavioural and psychiatric traits, including bipolar mood disorder. The same short allele has also been implicated as a modifier of the bipolar phenotype. Here we evaluate the etiologic/modifier role of this polymorphism in a case (N=103) / control (N=112) sample for bipolar mood disorder (type I) collected from an isolated South American population. We did not detect an association between bipolar disorder and the 5-HTT promoter polymorphism in this sample. However, an excess of the short allele was seen in younger cases and in cases with psychotic symptoms. When combined with data from the literature, the increased frequency of the short allele in patients with psychotic symptoms was statistically significant.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the changes in uterine Doppler velocimetry during the postpartum period in women with homozygous sickle cell (SS) disease and to correlate these findings with values in the third trimester and with neonatal outcomes. METHODS We studied the postpartum changes in uterine Doppler velocimetry in 16 women with SS disease in relation to third-trimester systolic/diastolic (S/D) ratios and neonatal outcome. All patients had repeated measures of uterine S/D ratios biweekly in the third trimester from 28 weeks of pregnancy until delivery, and at 24 h, and 3 and 6 weeks postpartum. RESULTS Overall the mean S/D ratio in the first 24 h for these 16 women was 2.72 +/- 0.72 and increased progressively to a mean S/D ratio of 6.88 +/- 0.96 at 6 weeks postpartum, with the reappearance of a diastolic notch by the 3rd postpartum week. Twelve women who had normal (< or = 2.6) uterine S/D ratios during pregnancy delivered appropriate-for-gestational-age (AGA) infants. The remaining 4 women had abnormal uterine S/D ratios, and in 3 of these pregnancies, small-for-gestational-age (SGA) infants were delivered. The mean S/D ratios for the subgroups with abnormal value at each of the three postpartum periods were significantly higher than for the 12 SS patients with normal third-trimester values. Postpartum S/D ratios for the 3 women with SGA births were also significantly higher at 24 h and 6 weeks postpartum when compared to SS patients with AGA infants. CONCLUSION We concluded that postpartum S/D ratios are higher in women with SS disease that have abnormal values in the third trimester and that they are associated with SGA births. In SS patients the nonpregnant pattern of uterine artery velocity waveforms which reappears postpartum may reflect an increase in the uteroplacental circulatory impedence due to reversal of the alterations in the spiral arteries induced by trophoblastic invasion during pregnancy or subinvolution of the placental bed. Additional studies are needed to further elucidate these important hemodynamic changes in women with hemoglobinopathies and to identify patterns predictive of neonatal outcomes in these high-risk patients.

Abstract
The consumption of oxygen during the degradation of aniline by Fenton and photo-Fenton reactions is studied. The effect that parameters like aniline, Fe(II) and H2O2 initial concentration, pH, temperature and O2 flow rate have on the ratio O2 consumed/H2O2 consumed is examined. The determination of those combinations of experimental conditions for which an effective partial replacement of H2O2 by O2 as electron acceptor takes place is investigated. The results show that this replacement takes place in a variable extent, but the presence of H2O2 is necessary along the reaction, and the maximum consumption of O2 only takes place when the ratio amount of aniline mineralized vs. initial aniline concentration is minimal.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The use of ultrasound (U/S) for the evaluation of patients with blunt abdominal trauma is gaining increasing acceptance. Patients who would have undergone computed tomographic (CT) scan may now be evaluated solely with U/S. Solid organ injuries with minimal or no free fluid may be missed by surgeon sonographers. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to describe the incidence and clinical importance of liver and splenic injuries with minimal or no free intraperitoneal fluid visible on CT scan. We hypothesized that these solid organ injuries occur infrequently and are of minor clinical significance. METHODS Patient records and CT scans were reviewed for the presence of and outcome associated with blunt liver and splenic injuries with minimal (<250 mL) or no free fluid detected by an attending radiologist. Data were collected from six major trauma centers during a 4-year period before the introduction of U/S and included demographics, grade of injury (American Association for the Surgery of Trauma scale), need for operative intervention, and outcome. RESULTS A total of 938 patients with liver and splenic injuries were identified. In this group, 11% of liver injuries and 12% of splenic injuries had no free fluid visible on CT scan and could be missed by diagnostic peritoneal lavage or U/S. Of the 938 patients, 267 (28%) met the inclusion criteria; 161 had injury to the spleen and 125 had injury to the liver. In the 267 patients studied, 97% of the injuries were managed nonoperatively. However, 8 patients (3%) required operative intervention for bleeding. Compared with the liver, the spleen was significantly more likely to bleed (p = 0.01), but the grade of splenic injury was not related to the risk for hemorrhage (p = 0.051). CONCLUSION Data from this study suggest that injuries to the liver or spleen with minimal or no intraperitoneal fluid visible on CT scan occur more frequently than predicted but usually are of minimal clinical significance. However, patients with splenic injuries may be missed by abdominal U/S. We found a 5% associated risk of bleeding. Therefore, abdominal U/S should not be used as the sole diagnostic modality in all stable patients at risk for blunt abdominal injury.

Abstract
Review article on MR arthrography: technique and main indications. Intra-articular injection of diluted Gadolinium provides good distension and better appreciation of intra-articular structures than standard MRI. It is useful for partial tears of the rotator cuff, in cases of gleno-humeral instability, lesions of the acetabular labrum and hyaline articular cartilage and also for elbow, wrist and ankle ligamentous ruptures.

Abstract
A case of meniscal ossicles occurring in the left knee of a 23-year-old woman is presented. Radiographs showed two calcified lesions at the posteromedial aspect of the knee which were interpreted as loose bodies. Sonography, computed tomography arthrography and magnetic resonance imaging showed the fragments within the posterior horn of the medial meniscus permitting a diagnosis of meniscal ossicles. These techniques can detect meniscal ossicles and exclude intra-articular loose bodies.

Abstract
Inflammatory myopathies encompass a group of acquired muscle disorders caused by infectious agents (bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasitic agents) or autoimmune processes (polymyositis, dermatomyositis and other types). In suspected infection sonography, CT and MRI are all able to show edema and fluid collections in soft tissues and muscles; sonography and CT may help guidance of a needle aspiration to establish a correct diagnosis. By offering better tissue differentiation, MRI appears to be more efficient than sonography and CT in diagnosing and managing autoimmune myopathies. MRI is indeed very sensitive to the presence of water and edema, and appears to be a very good indicator for an early diagnosis of diseases. MRI may also help to evaluate the extent and number of lesions, to guide a biopsy in an area of active disease and finally to follow the evolution under therapy.

Abstract
It has been reported that serine repeat antigen (SERA) binds directly to human erythrocyte membranes, inside-out vesicles and intact mouse erythrocytes. Similarly, mAbs specific against SERA are effective in blocking red blood cell (RBC) invasion by P. falciparum merozoites. Furthermore, the N-terminal recombinant SERA fragment inhibits the merozoite invasion of erythrocyte. In this study of 49 non-overlapping 20-residue-long peptides encompassing the whole SERA protein FCR3 strain, seven peptides having high RBC binding activity were found. Six of these peptides (three from the SERA N-terminal domain) are located in conserved regions and show affinity constants between 150 and 1100 nM, Hill coefficients between 1.5 and 3.0 and 30000-120000 binding sites per cell. Some of these peptides inhibited in vitro merozoite invasion of erythrocyte and intra-erythrocytic development. Residues which are critical in the binding to erythrocytes (in bold face), i.e. 6725 (YLKETNNAISFESNSGSLEKK), 6733 (YALGSDIPEKCDTLASNCFLS), 6737 (YDNILVKMFKTNENNDKSELI), 6746 (DQGNCDTSWIFASKYHLETI), 6754 (YKKVQNLCGDDTADHAVNIVG) and 6762 (NEVSERVHVYHILKHIKDGK), were determined by means of competition assays with high-binding peptide glycine analogues.
