Abstract
BACKGROUND The level of nitric oxide (NO) is important to protect the heart from ischemic damage in acute coronary syndrome (ACS) patients. S-nitrosothiol (SNO) is a molecule that represents the main form of NO storage in the vascular structure. In addition, dynamic thiol/disulfide homeostasis (TDH) is known to play an important role in maintaining the oxidant-antioxidant balance. In this study, our aim is to evaluate the oxidative/nitrosative stress status according to SNO level and TDH in patients with ACS. METHODS The study included 124 patients who were admitted to the emergency service and 124 consecutive individuals who applied to the cardiology outpatient clinic with cardiac complaints and underwent coronary angiography (CAG). Blood was drawn from all participants included in the study to determine SNO, nitrite, total thiol, native thiol, and disulfide levels after 12 h of fasting. RESULTS Serum SNO levels were found to be significantly lower in ACS patients compared to the control group (0.3 ± 0.08 vs. 0.4 ± 0.10 μmol/L, successively, p < 0.001). In addition, while the total thiol, native thiol, and native thiol/total thiol levels were lower in the patient group compared to the control group, nitrite, disulfide/native thiol and disulfide/total thiol levels were higher. As a result of multivariate logistic regression analysis, it was determined that age, gender, smoking, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, glycosylated haemoglobin, and SNO levels were independent predictors in predicting ACS patients. DISCUSSION S-nitrosothiol and thiol levels were found to be significantly lower in ACS patients. In addition, SNO molecule was independently associated with the presence of ACS diagnosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Acute cerebral infarction (ACI) occurs as a result of instant disruption of vascular flow that causes disbalance between oxidative/antioxidative activity. We examined the relationship of serum neuro-oxidative stress parameters with stroke severity and infarct volume in ACI and emphasized the qualitative importance of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) on its relationship with myeloperoxidase (MPO) and paraoxonase-1 (PON1) in the acute period of stroke. METHODS One hundred ACI patients applied within the first 24 h and 50 healthy volunteers were included. The patient group was evaluated with demographic data (including arrival serum biochemical assessment), clinical disability scores, infarct volume, serum oxidative/antioxidative parameters (lipid hydroperoxide (LOOH), MPO, PON1, MPO/PON ratio). The relevant serum parameters were compared with the control group. Dysfunctional HDL measurement was based on detecting dysfunctionality as a result of a high positive correlation between the dysfunctional feature of HDL and the MPO/PON ratio. The correlation of serum parameters, clinical disability score, and infarct volume were evaluated, and independent analyses of variability with comorbidities were performed. RESULTS A negative correlation between PON1 and arrival NIH score/scale (NIHSS), LOOH and discharge modified rankin scale (mRS), triglyceride level, and infarct volume; a positive correlation between MPO\PON ratio and infarct volume was determined. Logistic regression analyses showed that hypertension, diabetes, and high HbA1C may be predictors of stroke severity, and diabetes mellitus, high HbA1C, infarct volume, and high NIHSS score may be predictors of early disability (p < 0.005). The ROC curve analysis revealed that determining the cut-off value for LOOH is of importance in determining early disability scores (7.2 and 6.2, respectively). DISCUSSION The balance between oxidative and antioxidative stress parameters and their quantitative/qualitative changes is of importance, especially in the acute period of ACI. Dysfunctional HDL's evolution and its relationship with other oxidants are significant not only in the cardiovascular aspect but also in the clinicoradiological aspect.

Abstract
Background: Ceruloplasmin plays an important role in the regulation of iron metabolism. Ceruloplasmin is an acute-phase protein known to have many metabolic effects. Its activity increases during infection, inflammation, and compensation of oxidation. In the current study, our aim is to develop a new method for the measurement of ferroxidase activity without requiring any chromogen. Methods: Venous blood samples were collected into serum separator tubes. Ferric iron ions formed by the enzyme ferroxidase were measured, both manually and fully automatically, at the 415 nm wavelength without using chromogen. These results were compared to conventional ferroxidase measurement methods and to the immunoturbidimetric ceruloplasmin measurement method. Results: The detection limit of the new assay was 14.8 U/L. The upper limit of the linearity was 1380 U/L. Precision values were calculated for high, medium, and low levels of ferroxidase activity in serum pool. The coefficient of variation was <5% for each level. Conclusion: In the present method, chromogens are not used. With its considerably low cost and short reaction time, this method is able to provide fast results, can be performed easily, and makes accurate measurements.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aims to evaluate the correlations between the severity of the disease and serum steroid levels by analyzing the serum steroid levels in COVID-19 patients with different levels of disease progression and the control group. METHODS Morning serum Aldosterone, 11-deoxycortisol, Androstenedione, 17-hydroxyprogesterone, Dihydrotestosterone (DHT), Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), Corticosterone, Dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS), Estrone, Estradiol, Progesterone, 11-deoxycorticosterone, Cortisol, Corticosterone, Androsterone, Pregnenolone, 17-hydroxypregnenolone and 21-deoxycortisol levels were measured in 153 consecutive patients were grouped as mild, moderate, and severe based on the WHO COVID-19 disease severity classification and the control group. Steroid hormone levels were analyzed at once with a liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometric method (LC-MS/MS). RESULTS In our study, nearly all steroids were statistically significantly higher in the patients' group than in the control group (p < 0.001). Also, DHEA was an independent indicator of the disease severity with COVID-19 CONCLUSIONS: Our study reveals that the alteration in steroid hormone levels was correlated with disease severity. Also, steroid hormone levels should be followed up during COVID-19 disease management.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION We investigated the effect of epilepsy on cord blood oxidative stress status. MATERIAL AND METHODS Thirty (n = 30) pregnant women with epilepsy and thirty (n = 30) healthy controls enrolled in this case control study. Albumin and IMA values and dynamic thiol/disulfide parameters were measured. RESULTS Decreased native thiol and total thiol levels were found in the epilepsy group when compared to the control group (p: 0.001, p: 0.002). Higher IMA (p: 0.036) and lower albumin cord levels (P < 0.001) were measured in the epilepsy group with respect to the control group. Apgar scores at 1 and 5 miutes were lower in the epilepsy group (respectively; p = 0.012, p = 0.010). A negative correlation was found between IMA and cord pH value (r = 0.288 p = 0.034). CONCLUSION This study showed that epilepsy may alter thiol disulfide homeostasis and IMA levels.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Urinary tract infection (UTI) is a disease that can cause significant complications in the neonatal period. The thiol-disulfide homeostasis is one of the important antioxidant defense mechanisms. The purpose of this study is to show the relationship between UTI and thiol-disulfide homeostasis in newborns. STUDY DESIGN In this prospective study, 40 newborns with UTI and 40 healthy controls were included. Thiol-disulfide tests (disulfide, native thiol, and total thiol levels) and septic screening tests were performed before and after antibiotherapy in UTI group. The control group was selected from healthy newborns who applied to the outpatient clinic. RESULTS The C-reactive protein and interleukin-6 levels were higher, while native thiol and native thiol/total thiol ratio were significantly lower in pretreatment group compared with posttreatment and control group. Also, the levels of disulfide, ischemia modified albumin, disulfide/native thiol ratio, and disulfide/total thiol ratio were higher in pretreatment group compared with posttreatment group. CONCLUSION The thiol-disulfide homeostasis is an important indicator of oxidative stress during infections. It is valuable to be detected with small amounts of serum in newborns. These molecules can be used to support the diagnosis of UTI in the newborn. Further studies are needed to define the role of thiol-disulfide homeostasis in the UTI of newborn. Abstract
Background Acute appendicitis is one of the events most frequently encountered by general surgeons. Despite the high incidence, serious problems are experienced in the diagnosis and clinical follow-up. In the pathogenesis of the disease, oxidative stress and impaired antioxidant defense mechanisms created in the body by this stress play an important role. As dynamic thiol-disulfide hemostasis is closely related to oxidative stress and is known to have a crucial role in the pathogenesis of oxidative stress, this study aimed to compare its value with other inflammatory markers in the diagnosis and follow-up of acute appendicitis. Methodology This study included cases admitted for surgery with a diagnosis of acute abdomen at Keçiören Research and Training Hospital General Surgery Clinic between April 2015 and July 2015 who were intraoperatively diagnosed with acute appendicitis and underwent routine appendectomy. In the preoperative period and after clinical healing before discharge, blood samples were obtained to examine white blood cell (WBC), mean platelet volume (MPV), total bilirubin, C-reactive protein (CRP), and thiol-disulfide balance, and the results were recorded. Results A total of 68 cases were operated on for acute appendicitis, and 59 were evaluated comprising 23 (39%) females and 36 (61%) males with a mean age of 35.6 years (range = 19-65 years). The mean duration of hospital stay was two days (range = 1-8 days). The results of the tests performed preoperatively and before discharge and their p-values were as follows: native thiol (-SH) 393.5 ± 9.4 µmol/L and 369.3 ± 9.5 µmol/L (p = 0.04), total thiol 434 ± 9.7 µmol/L and 396.7 ± 10.2 µmol/L (p = 0.03), disulfide (-S-S) 16.8 ± 0.7 µmol/L and 15.7 ± 0.9 µmol/L (p = 0.3), WBC 13.2 ± 0.5 × 10³/mL and 9.2 ± 0.4 × 10³/mL (p = 0.0), CRP 8.17 ± 1.24 mg/L and 7.84 ± 0.82 mg/L (p = 0.17), MPV 7.4 ± 0.37 fL and 7.97 ± 0.19 fL (p = 1.0), and total bilirubin 0.86 ± 0.08 mg/dL and 0.69 ± 0.06 mg/dL (p = 0.08). Conclusions In the clinical follow-up of acute appendicitis patients, the decrease in WBC, total thiol, and native thiol values can be helpful to clinicians as markers of clinical healing. However, CRP may not be a useful marker of clinical healing in acute appendicitis patients who are discharged early.

Abstract
ObjectivesWe aimed to examine the change in plasma copper (Cu) level and copper transport proteins level before inserting Cu-IUD and after one menstrual cycle and to show the effect of this change on the thiol disulfide balance in women using copper-containing intrauterine device (Cu-IUD).MethodThirty-three reproductive women who admitted to the gynecology clinic and inserted Cu-IUD were examined in this study. Thiol-disulfide homeostasis, plasma Cu and ceruloplasmin levels and ceruloplasmin ferroxidase activity were measured using the blood samples collected just before inserting Cu-IUD and after one menstrual cycle.ResultsPlasma copper level (p = 0.006), ceruloplasmin (p < 0.001), Ceruloplasmin Ferroxidase (p = 0.005), thiol disulfide homeostasis parameters; native thiol (NT) (p = 0.004), and total thiol (p = 0.003) levels increased significantly.ConclusionAfter one menstrual cycle in women inserted intrauterine Cu-IUD for contraception, plasma levels of Cu, which is the oxidant molecule, increased significantly. Both plasma ceruloplasmin level and ceruloplasmin ferroxidase activity increased due to elevated Cu levels. This increased oxidant status in the acute period was balanced by the increase in the native thiol level.

Abstract
BackgroundThe aim of the present study was to assess thiol/disulfide homeostasis (TDH) parameters and ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) levels in children with Wilson Disease (WD) and to compare them to healthy controls. Methods: Based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria, fifteen children with WD and twenty-nine healthy children were enrolled, and serum thiol/disulfide and IMA levels were compared between groups. Results: The mean values of native and total thiols were significantly lower in the WD group than in the control group. The mean value of disulfide was significantly higher in the WD group than in the control group. The mean percentages of disulfide/total thiol and native thiol/total thiol were higher in the WD group than in the control group. The IMA value was also higher in the WD group than in the control group. Conclusion: The present study demonstrating altered thiol/disulfide parameters indicates increased oxidative stress in children with WD.

Abstract
Twenty-four-hour urine measurements play a crucial role in the diagnosis, follow-up and treatment of various diseases. There are different approaches to the collection of urine in patients who need to collect multiple urine samples at a time, especially in hospitals with heavy workloads. In this study, we compared the sodium, potassium, chloride, amylase, calcium, creatinine, phosphorus, microalbumin, protein, magnesium, urea, uric acid, adrenaline, noradrenaline, dopamine, metanephrine, normetanephrine, vanillylmandelic acid, 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid and homovanillic acid results of 24-h urine samples analyzed immediately without acid addition, which we accepted as the reference and baseline measurement, with the results of the samples analyzed after waiting for 24 h without acid addition, analyzed immediately with acid addition and analyzed after waiting for 24 h with acid addition. Chloride, microalbumin, amylase and protein tests, which are recommended to be measured in the sample without preservatives, are affected by acid addition. Adrenaline, noradrenaline and dopamine, which are the tests recommended to be measured in acid-added urine are degraded in the samples without acid, and the levels of metanephrine and normetanephrine were not significantly degraded in the absence of preservatives.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES The etiopathogenesis of ankylosing spondylitis (AS), which is a chronic, progressive, inflammatory, systemic disease, has not been fully elucidated yet. Thiol-disulfide homeostasis, a component of antioxidant defense, is thought to play a role in the etiology of inflammatory diseases. We aimed to evaluate the existence of oxidative stress in active AS patients with thiol-disulfide homeostasis. MATERIALS AND METHODS Patients who were found to have high (n: 27) and very-high (n: 18) activity levels with ASDAS-ESR and 40 healthy controls participated in the study. Serum native-thiol (NT), total-thiol (TT), and disulfide levels were analyzed by an automated colorimetric method. RESULTS While TT and NT levels were significantly decreased in patients compared to the control group, the disulfide levels were increased. There was a significant negative correlation between ESR, and NT, TT in both groups and also between hsCRP and NT, TT in very-high active AS patients.TT and NT levels were significantly higher in the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) users compared to those using biological agents. CONCLUSIONS The deterioration of thiol-disulfide homeostasis in favor of disulfide; correlations between ESR, CRP, and NT, TT support the use of thiol-disulfide variables in determining the disease activity level.

Abstract
In children with β-thalassemia (β-thal) trait, tissue damage occurs with oxidative stress due to oxygen free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. Dynamic thiol-disulfide homeostasis (DTDH) is one of the most important indicators showing the pro-oxidant/antioxidant status in the body. In this study, we aimed to examine the status of DTDH by measuring native thiol, disulfide, and total thiol levels in children with β-thal trait. The study included 40 children with β-thal trait and 30 healthy controls (matched by age and gender). The DTDH parameters were measured by an automated method and results were compared between the groups. The levels of native thiol, total thiol, and disulfide in children with β-thal trait group were statistically significantly higher than the control group (p < 0.001). There was no significant difference in disulfide/native thiol, disulfide/total thiol, and native thiol/total thiol levels between the groups. In addition, there was no correlation between hemoglobin (Hb) and serum ferritin levels with the markers of DTDH in children with β-thal trait. In our study, a significant increase was found in native thiol, total thiol, and disulfide levels in response to oxidative stress in children with β-thal trait compared to the healthy control group. Disulfide levels of the children with β-thal trait were higher than the control group, showing oxidative stress is high in β-thal trait. Accordingly, it increases the native thiol and total thiol capacity as compensation.

Abstract
This study was designed to determine thiol-disulfide homeostasis as indices of oxidative stress in painters by using a novel and automated colorimetric measurement method. Male painters (n = 117) were separated into three groups according to duration of work; group 1 (<5 years), group 2 (5-14 years) and group 3 (≥15 years). Hippuric acid, trichloroacetic acid (TCA), and phenol in urine was determined. Catalase activity and ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) levels were also assessed. Disulfide/Native Thiol and Disulfide/Total Thiol of group 2 and group 3 were significantly higher than those of group 1 (p < 0.001). A positive correlation was observed between urinary phenol and disulfide/native thiol (r = 0.214, p = 0.035), IMA (r = 0.305, p = 0.002), disulfide (r = 0.209, p = 0.040), and duration of work (r = 0.341, p < 0.001). The newly developed automated colorimetric method used in our study proposes a promising, practical and daily applicable test for evaluating oxidative status of painters.

Abstract
Objective: It is thought that oxidative stress, free radicals, reactive oxygen species and reactive nitrogen species affect the pathophysiology of coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19). This study aimed to evaluate the oxidative status in pregnant patients with COVID-19 infection according to the changes seen in the levels of maternal serum thiol-disulfide and ischemia-modified albumin (IMA). Materials and Methods: A study group was formed of 40 pregnant women with confirmed COVID-19 infection (study group) and a control group of 40 healthy pregnant women with no risk factors determined. In this prospective, case-controlled study, analyses were made of the maternal serum native thiol, total thiol, disulfide, IMA, and disulfide/native thiol concentrations. Results: The maternal serum native thiol and total thiol concentrations in the study group were determined to be statistically significantly lower (p=0.007 and p=0.006, respectively), and the disulfide/native thiol ratio was higher but not to a level of statistical significance (p=0.473). There was no difference between the two groups regarding IMA levels (p=0.731). Conclusion: The thiol-disulfide balance was seen to shift in the oxidant direction in pregnancies with COVID-19, which might support the view that ischemic processes play a role in the etiopathogenesis of this novel disease.

Abstract
AIM HbA1c measurement is very useful for the follow-up and detection of glycemic disorder, since it is easier and faster test and is independent of the patient's fasting status. In this study, we aimed to perform the comparative evaluation of 3 different methods for HbA1c measurement including capillary electrophoresis, immunoturbidimetric assay and high-performance liquid chromatography-HPLC. MATERIALS AND METHODS This study comprised 134 leftover whole blood samples obtained from the subjects submitted for routine HbA1c testing. All blood samples were collected in EDTA-containing vacutainer tubes. The HbA1c levels were measured simultaneously using three different methods. Bias estimation, method agreement and concordance between the pairwise methods comparisons were evaluated by Bland-Altman plot and Passing-Bablok regression test. RESULTS HbA1c levels ranged from 3.8% to 13.4% and measured by three different methods to make the comparison. The median values of samples based on immunoturbidimetric method (6.05%, IQR = 1.80) were higher than capillary electrophoresis method (5.90%, IQR = 1.80) and HPLC (5.85%, IQR = 1.80) method. The study group was classified into three subgroups based on the HbA1c levels measured with the HPLC method: Group 1 (n = 57) was composed of subjects with HbA1c levels less than 5.7%, Group 2 (n = 35) had HbA1c levels between 5.7% and 6.4%, Group 3 (n = 42) had HbA1c levels equal and more than 6.5%. CONCLUSION To our knowledge, there is no study evaluating the HbA1c measurement on the Atellica® CH 930 Analyzer. We compared the Atellica®CH930 Analyzer with both HPLC and capillary electrophoresis. The Atellica®CH930 Analyzer showed acceptable performance and a strong correlation with both mentioned methods.

Abstract
Aim: We investigated the relationship between thrombolysis in myocardial infarction (TIMI) thrombus grade and thiol/disulfide levels. Materials & methods: 182 non-ST elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) patients were divided into two groups; TIMI grade 0 patients who do not have any visible thrombus in their culprit vessels, and TIMI thrombus grade 1-5 patients. Results: Native and total thiol levels and disulfide to thiol ratio were higher in the low thrombus group. In addition, thrombus grade was positively correlated with disulfide to native and total thiol ratio and negatively with native and total thiol levels in NSTEMI patients. Conclusion: We can assert that thiol levels tend to decrease, and the disulfide to thiol ratio increase with increasing thrombus burden in NSTEMI patients.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION In a performed study, selenium levels were detected to be lower in subacute thyroiditis (SAT). This outcome suggests that the oxidant-antioxidant system may play a role in the aetiopathogenesis of SAT, as is the case for many other diseases. The aim of the present study was to detect whether any association exists between SAT and oxidative stress, and to determine the factors of a possible association. MATERIAL AND METHODS Twenty-five patients who were newly diagnosed with SAT and 30 healthy volunteers were enrolled in the study. Total antioxidant status (TAS), total oxidant status (TOS), oxidative stress index (OSI), paraoxonase 1 (PON1), and dynamic thiol/disulphide [native thiol (NT), total thiol (TT), disulphide (DS), DS/TT, DS/NT, and NT/TT] levels of the participants were evaluated. RESULTS Total thiol and NT levels were found to be lower in the SAT group (p < 0.001). DS/NT and DS/TT levels were significantly higher in the patients with SAT, whereas NT/TT levels were lower (p < 0.05). A negative correlation was detected between C-reactive protein (CRP) and TAS, whereas a positive correlation was detected between CRP and OSI. There was a negative association between TSH and TAS only in the partial correlation analysis by adjusting for age, white blood cell count, neutrophil (Neu) level, CRP, and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) (r = -0.481, p = 0.043). CONCLUSIONS Thiol levels are significantly decreased and thiol/disulphide homoeostasis is disrupted in patients with SAT. The present study has presented for the first time that there may be an association between SAT and oxidative stress.

Abstract
Introduction Primary myelofibrosis (PM) has a lower overall survival rate than other myeloproliferative neoplasms, and leukemic transformation is the most common cause of death. Increased oxidative stress has an important role in leukemic transformation in these patients. In this study, we aimed to find an answer to the question, "Could Ruxolitinib, which has been widely used in patients with myelofibrosis in recent years, have a role in reducing oxidative stress in these patients?". Methods A total of 106 patients with PM and 111 healthy volunteers were included in this study. We collected the serum samples of healthy volunteers and patients with myelofibrosis at the time of diagnosis and one month after the initiation of Ruxolitinib treatment. Ischemia modified albumin (IMA), native thiol, total thiol, and disulfide levels were studied. The disulfide/native thiol, disulfide/total thiol, and native thiol/total thiol ratios were calculated. Results IMA, native thiol, total thiol, disulfide levels, disulfide/native thiol, and disulfide/total thiol ratios at the time of diagnosis were significantly different in patients with myelofibrosis compared to the control group (p=0.001). Ruxolitinib significantly reduced oxidative stress when the measurements in the first month after Ruxolitinib were compared with those at the time of diagnosis (p=0.001). In patients with ASXL1 mutation, intermediate-2 risk, and high-risk according to the Dipps-plus score, the decrease in oxidative stress in the first month of treatment was more significant than at the time of diagnosis. Conclusion Ruxolitinib may be an effective treatment for reducing oxidative stress in patients with PM. The reduction in oxidative stress parameters with treatment in patients with ASXL1 mutation, intermediate-2, and high-risk patients was observed to be higher.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of the study is to show the relationship between oxidative stress and ectopic pregnancy. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 62 patients, 31 in the ectopic pregnancy group (study group) and 31 in the first-trimester pregnancy (control group) were included in the study. Patients between 18-45 years of age who had tubal ectopic pregnancy diagnosed by transvaginal ultrasonography and serum β-HCG values were included in the study group. Serum thiol- disulfide hemostasis were measured from venous blood. RESULTS Between the control group and the ectopic pregnant group; there was no statistically significant difference in terms of age, total thiol, albumin, disulfide, index 1 (disulfide / total thiol), index 2 (disulfide / native thiol), and index 3 levels (p> 0.05). The area under the ROC curve for native thiol measurements was statistically significant in distinguishing the control group and the ectopic pregnant group [AUC = 0.657, 95% CI: 0.521-0.793, p = 0.034] Conclusion: This study shows that ectopic pregnancies may be associated with the presence of high oxidative stress. Especially in early stage suspected patients, demonstrating the presence of oxidative stress together with serial β-HCG follow-up may be helpful in diagnosis.

Abstract
Background & objectives: Continuous subclinical inflammation can be seen in patients with familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) during the attack-free period. The importance of oxidative stress parameters in acute appendicitis (AA) progression has also been shown in previous studies. So, oxidative stress and the oxidant/antioxidant balance may play a role in this persistent subclinical inflammation. With this background the main objective of this study was to investigate the usefulness of combining the thiol-disulfide homeostasis parameters and the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in the differential diagnosis of AA and an acute FMF attack. Methods: The present study was conducted prospectively with 84 patients who were admitted to the emergency department between May 1, and December 31, 2018. Another 40 healthy individuals were assigned as the control group. The homeostasis parameters of thiol-disulfide were measured by a spectrophotometric method and NLR was measured in the patient and control groups. Results: Native thiol and total thiol values were lower, while disulfide values were insignificantly higher in patients with AA than in patients with FMF. The white blood cell (WBC), neutrophil and NLR values were significantly higher in the AA group (P<0.001, P<0.001, P<0.001, respectively). When the neutrophil cut-off value for AA was set at 8.55, the calculated sensitivity was 80 per cent, the specificity was 72.2 per cent, and the area under the curve was 0.837. Interpretation & conclusions: The results of this study suggest that neutrophil, WBC and NLR values can be useful in the differentiation of AA from an acute FMF attack.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite several alternatives for cellular iron influx, the only mechanism for cellular iron efflux is ferroportin mediated active transport. In cases of ferroportin dysfunction, iron accumulates in the cell and causes ferroptosis. Hepcidin suppresses ferroportin levels and inflammatory activation increases hepcidin production. Mild inflammation in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder may alter hepcidin and ferroportin. METHODS The study included a total of 137 patients aged 18-65 years, 57 diagnosed with schizophrenia and 80 with bipolar disorder, according to the DSM-IV diagnostic criteria, and a control group (HC) of 42 healthy individuals. Biochemical analyses, thyroid function tests, hemogram, serum iron level, iron-binding capacity, and ferritin levels were examined. Serum levels of hepcidin and ferroportin were measured with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method. RESULTS A statistically significant difference was determined between the groups in terms of the serum ferroportin levels (F = 15.69, p < 0.001). Post-hoc analyses showed that the schizophrenia group had higher ferroportin levels than in the bipolar group (p < 0.001) and HCs (p < 0.001). Hepcidin levels did not differ between the groups. Chlorpromazine equivalent doses of antipsychotics correlated with ferroportin levels (p = 0.024). CONCLUSION Ferroportin levels were increased in the schizophrenia group, although iron and hepcidin levels were within normal ranges. Antipsychotics may alter the mechanisms which control ferroportin levels. Further studies are needed to examine the relationships between antipsychotics and iron metabolism for determination of causal relationship.

Abstract
Objective: Thiol/disulfide (T/DS) homeostasis represents a promising new approach to evaluate oxidative stress. Therefore, we aimed to examine T/DS homeostasis in vitamin D (VitD)-deficient patients. Methods: We enrolled 154 patients with VitD deficiency and 154 healthy control subjects in the study. For both groups, native thiol, total thiol, and disulfide values were measured. Additionally, considering the obtained 25-hydroxycholecalciferol [25(OH)D] levels, the patient group was further divided into two subgroups (Group 1: <10 ng/mL, Group 2: 10-20 ng/mL), which were compared in more depth according to the specified parameters. Results: Values of native thiol, total thiol, and disulfide measured in the combination of Groups 1 and 2, comprising individuals with VitD deficiency, proved to be higher in comparison to the control group with statistical significance (p=0.007, p=0.028, and p<0.001, respectively). When subgroups were considered according to VitD classifications, native thiol and total thiol were again higher in Group 1 in comparison to the values obtained for control subjects (p=0.022; p<0.001). While the total thiol level of Group 2 was higher than that of controls (p<0.001), no difference with statistical significance was obtained in the comparison of disulfide levels among the indviduals of Group 1, Group 2, and the controls (p=0.081). Conclusion: In this study, among patients with VitD deficiency, we have confirmed that values of native thiol and total thiol were increased, while the T/DS balance was found to have shifted in favor of the thiol level.

Abstract
PURPOSE Due to the increasing prevalence of obesity worldwide, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has reached epidemic dimensions over time. NAFLD is the most common cause of childhood chronic liver disease. There is a relationship between NAFLD and oxidative stress. This study aims to investigate the changes in thiol/disulfide homeostasis parameters to determine the oxidant/antioxidant balance in obese rats with diet-induced NAFLD and healthy rats. METHODS Twelve Wistar albino rats were used in this study. Experimentally produced NAFLD obese rats (n=6) and healthy rats were compared. Experimental NAFLD model was created with a special fatty liver diet (Altromin® C1063, Fatty Liver Diet, Exclusivet, Lage, Germany). The biochemical and histopathological features of the groups, as well as serum thiol/disulfide homeostasis parameters, were analyzed and compared. RESULTS In the experimentally induced NAFLD rat model, they gained more weight than the control group. Steatosis (at least grade 2) occurred in all rats fed with special fatty liver diet for 12 weeks. Histopathologically, no high-grade inflammation was observed in rats with experimental NAFLD after feeding a diet for 12 weeks. Results revealed that aspartate transaminase and alanine transaminase levels were high, albumin levels were low, oxidant stress parameters increased, and antioxidant thiol groups decreased. CONCLUSION Experimental NAFLD is characterized by increased oxidant stress accompanying fatty tissue in the liver. Analysis of thiol/disulfide homeostasis parameters in NAFLD can be used in further studies to develop effective treatment options.
