Abstract
Updated morphological and histopathological descriptions for Dicauda atherinoidi (Bivalvulida:Myxobolidae) and an expanded host range are supplemented with the first molecular data and phylogenetic analyses of the genus. Plasmodia were located on the head, ventrum/body and fins of infected emerald shiner Notropis atherinoides Rafinesque, 1818 and mimic shiner Notropis vollucellus Cope, 1865, a new host species. Myxospores were spherical, ranging 9.3-11.4 μm (10.5 ± 0.4) in length, 9.0-11.0 μm (9.7 ± 0.4) in width and 6.6-7.0 μm (6.8 ± 0.2) thick in sutural view, and possessed 2-3 caudal processes (5.3-68.3 μm, 31.1 ± 13.6) connected to the spore body at the sutural groove, all of which are consistent with the genus Dicauda. In the absence of available Dicauda sequence data, the 18S rDNA sequences from Michigan isolates were most similar to Myxobolus spp. Phylogenetic analyses clustered these isolates with myxobolid species from cyprinid fish, suggesting these parasites may represent an underpopulated group of cyprinid-infecting myxozoans. Histopathology revealed thin-walled plasmodial pseudocysts in the dermis and associated connective tissue, where granulomatous inflammation and focal scale atrophy were also present. Further sampling/sequencing of myxobolids from Notropis spp. should expand these underrepresented myxozoans and offer further insight into Myxobolidae host family tropisms.

Abstract
Flavobacterium columnare, the aetiological agent of columnaris disease, causes significant losses in fish worldwide. In this study, the prevalence of F. columnare infection was assessed in representative Great Lakes fish species. Over 2000 wild, feral and hatchery-propagated salmonids, percids, centrarchids, esocids and cyprinids were examined for systemic F. columnare infections. Logistic regression analyses showed that the prevalence of F. columnare infection varied temporally and by the sex of the fish, whereby females had significantly higher prevalence of infection. A total of 305 isolates of F. columnare were recovered. Amplification of the near complete 16S rRNA gene from 34 representative isolates and subsequent restriction fragment length polymorphism analyses demonstrated that all belonged to F. columnare genomovar I. Phylogenetic analysis of near complete 16S rRNA gene sequences also placed the isolates in genomovar I, but revealed some intragenomovar heterogeneity. Together, these results suggest that F. columnare genomovar I is widespread in the Great Lakes Basin, where its presence may lead to mortality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The Biochemistry and Haematology Outcome Model (BHOM) relies on the results from routine index blood tests to predict the patient risk of death. We aimed to externally validate the BHOM model. METHOD We considered all emergency adult medical patients who were discharged from Northern Lincolnshire and Goole (NLAG) hospital in 2014. We compared patient characteristics between NLAG (the validation sample) and the hospital where BHOM was developed. We evaluated the predictive performance, according to discriminative ability (with a concordance statistic, c), and calibration (agreement between observed and predicted risk). RESULT There were 29 834 emergency discharges of which 24 696 (83%) had complete data. In comparison with the development sample, the NLAG sample was similar in age, blood test results, but experienced a lower mortality (4.7 vs. 8.7%). When applied to NLAG, the BHOM model had good discrimination (c-statistic 0.83 [95% CI 0.823-0.842]). Calibration was good overall, although the BHOM model overpredicted for lowest (<5%, observed = 229, predicted = 286) and highest (≥50%, observed = 31, predicted = 49) risk groups, even after recalibrating for the differences in baseline risk of death. CONCLUSION Differences in patient case-mix profile and baseline risk of death need to be considered before the BHOM model can be used in another hospital. After re-calibrating for the baseline difference in risk the BHOM model had good discrimination but less adequate calibration.

Abstract
The Metroville Health Study aimed to reduce consumption of total cooking fats by 33%, salt by 25% and replace ghee with vegetable oil in a lower middle class urban community in Pakistan. Households (n=403) were randomly assigned to Intervention and Control groups. A baseline screening collected data on CVD risk factors, knowledge and attitudes and household consumption of cooking fats and salt. Intervention households received information about CVD and regular visits by social workers who measured cooking fats and salt and counselled cooks on the goals of intervention. Two years later, 291 households were re-screened. Intervention households reduced consumption of fats and salt compared to differences were total fat, 48% ( p<0.0001); ghee, 37% ( p=0.005); vegetable oil, 33% ( p=0.0001); and salt, 41% ( p=0.011). Household visits by trained social workers were effective in achieving reductions in consumption of cooking fat and salt in a lower class urban community. Asia Pac J Public Health 2003; 15(1): 30-36.

Abstract
Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) is well established tumor marker for colorectal cancers worldwide. Recent studies show that serum prolactin level is also raised in colorectal cancers. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the correlation of serum CEA and Prolactin with Dukes' staging of colorectal carcinomas. Between January 2013 and June 2013, Serum CEA and Serum Prolactin were measured by radioimmunoassay from 103 patients who were histopathologically diagnosed as colorectal carcinomas. Evaluation of the stages of the colorectal cancers was done on the basis of preoperative investigations and postoperative histopathology and correlated with Preoperative Serum CEA and Serum Prolactin. Results were presented as median value, range and percentage. Male to female ratio was 1.4:1 with median age of 42.26 years (range 17-78 years). Most of the patients in this series presented with carcinoma rectum (42%). Most of the patients (52%) were found in Dukes' stage C and 27% and 15% cases were found as Dukes' stage B and Dukes' stage D respectively. Stage of the disease is directly proportionate to percentage of the patient with high serum prolactin except early stage (Dukes' A-50%, Dukes' B-28.6%, Dukes' C-33.3% & Dukes' D-46.7%). Similarly serum CEA level is directly proportionate to tumor stage (Dukes' A-0%, Dukes' B-32%, Dukes' C-40.7% & Dukes' D-74.7%). A preoperative high serum CEA value suggests advanced disease either locally or with distant metastasis. In contrast preoperative high serum prolactin (hyperprolactinaemia) did not suggest advanced disease as it can be elevated even in early stage of disease. Serum CEA and Serum Prolactin both are valuable tumor markers but serum CEA could not be replaced by serum Prolactin. Serum Prolactin may be a helpful marker in earlier stages of the colorectal cancer.

Abstract
Michigan's fisheries rely primarily upon the hatchery propagation of salmonid fish for release in public waters. One limitation on the success of these efforts is the presence of bacterial pathogens, including Aeromonas salmonicida, the causative agent of furunculosis. This study was undertaken to determine the prevalence of A. salmonicida in Michigan fish, as well as to determine whether biochemical or gene sequence variability exists among Michigan isolates. A total of 2202 wild, feral and hatchery-propagated fish from Michigan were examined for the presence of A. salmonicida. The examined fish included Chinook salmon, Oncorhynchus tshawytscha (Walbaum), coho salmon, O. kisutcha (Walbaum), steelhead trout, O. mykiss (Walbaum), Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., brook trout, Salvelinus fontinalis (Mitchill), and yellow perch, Perca flavescens (Mitchill). Among these, 234 fish yielded a brown pigment-producing bacterium that was presumptively identified as A. salmonicida. Further phenotypic and phylogenetic analyses identified representative isolates as Aeromonas salmonicida subsp. salmonicida and revealed some genetic and biochemical variability. Logistic regression analyses showed that infection prevalence varied according to fish species/strain, year and gender, whereby Chinook salmon and females had the highest infection prevalence. Moreover, this pathogen was found in six fish species from eight sites, demonstrating its widespread nature within Michigan.

Abstract
Flavobacteriosis poses a serious threat to wild and propagated fish stocks alike, accounting for more fish mortality in Michigan and its associated state fish hatcheries than all other pathogens combined. Although this consortium of fish diseases has primarily been attributed to Flavobacterium psychrophilum, F. columnare, and F. branchiophilum, herein we describe a diverse assemblage of Flavobacterium and Chryseobacterium spp. isolates recovered from diseased as well as apparently healthy wild, feral, and farmed fish of Michigan. Among 254 fish-associated flavobacterial isolates recovered from 21 fish species during 2003-2010, 211 were identified as Flavobacterium spp., whereas 43 were identified as Chryseobacterium spp. according to ribosomal RNA partial gene sequencing and phylogenetic analysis. Although F. psychrophilum and F. columnare were indeed associated with multiple fish mortality events, many previously uncharacterized flavobacteria were recovered from systemically infected fish showing overt signs of disease, and in vitro protease assays demonstrated that these isolates were highly proteolytic to multiple substrates that comprise host tissues. Indeed, the majority of the isolates either (1) were most similar to recently described fish-associated Flavobacterium and Chryseobacterium spp. that have never before been reported in North America (e.g., F. oncorhynchi, F. araucananum, C. viscerum, C. piscicola, and C. chaponense) or (2) did not cluster with any described species and most likely represent novel flavobacterial taxa. This study highlights the extreme diversity of flavobacteria that are potentially associated with flavobacteriosis in Michigan.

Abstract
AIM Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the lip is a common oral malignancy. Lymph node metastasis occurs lately in the natural history of the disease but it is associated with poor outcome. Sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) is an option that determines the potentially affected lymph nodes especially in clinically negative-node patients. The study aims to determine the feasibility of SLNB as a reliable staging tool in N0 stage lip SCC patients. METHODS Eighteen patients with N0 stage lip SCC were enrolled in the study. They were subjected to SLNB using the injection of the radiocolloid material and the Blue dye. The procedure was followed by bilateral supraomohyoid neck dissection in all patients. The pathological results of the harvested sentinel lymph nodes (SLNs) were compared with that of the dissection specimen in each patient. RESULTS The patent blue dye could localize the SLN in 15/18 patients whilst the radioisotope scanning could successfully identify it in 17/18 patents. On average, 1.8 SLNs were harvested from each patient. Two of seventeen patients with identified SLNs (11.8%) have positive nodal metastases. One of them has two SLNs and the other has only one. No false negativity was reported in the study as all the excised SLNs reflected correctly the status of the lymph node basin. CONCLUSION Sentinel lymphadenectomy is a safe and feasible procedure in managing neck of patients with node-negative lip SCC. It can accurately stage these patients. Abstract
Sensor technology is a talented progression in the fundamental science and has vital role in the environmental and health monitoring. A lot of sensor materials with different sensitivities have been exposed but the prospective for industrial development as sensors and environmental supplement are still limited. Chloroform chemi-sensor has been fabricated by proficient exploitation of CuO microsphere as redox mediator. CuO microsphere showed good sensitivity (1.497 μM cm(-2) mM(-1)) and lower limit of detection (LOD=0.08 mM) with linear dynamic range (LDR) of 0.13 mM to 0.66 M in short response time (10.0 s). The hydrothermally synthesized CuO microsphere were characterized by using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and UV-vis spectra. XRD and FTIR approved that synthesized product is well crystalline, single phase monoclinic CuO. Morphological investigations revealed that CuO composed of nano-block which arranged and structured themselves in a proper manner to give sphere like micro-structures.

Abstract
This is a case report, with review of the literature, of an infant in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) with the complication of a nasoenteric weighted feeding tube that assumed an overhand knot configuration. Knotting of the feeding tube is a rare occurrence related to the use of feeding tubes, and should be considered if the tube becomes nonfunctional, if there are clinical factors that might lead to displacement or malposition of the tube, or if there is excessive resistance or sudden onset of respiratory distress in association with attempted removal.

Abstract
Low-dimensional nanoparticles composed SnO(2)-Co(3)O(4) nanocubes (NCs) were prepared by a hydrothermal method using reducing agents. The doped nanomaterials were investigated by UV/vis, powder X-ray diffraction, FT-IR, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and Raman spectroscopy, and field-emission scanning electron microscopy. They were deposited on a silver electrode (AgE, surface area, 0.0216 cm(2)) to give a drug sensor with a fast response towards Olmesartan medoxomil (OSM) in 0.1 mol L(-1) phosphate buffer-phases. The sensor also exhibits higher sensitivity, long-term stability, and enhanced electrochemical response. The calibration plot is linear (r(2)=0.9948) over the 0.28 nmol L(-1)-1.4 μM OSM concentration range. The sensitivity is ~2.083 μA cm(-2) mmol L(-1) and the detection limit is 0.17 nmol L(-1) (at an SNR of 3). We discuss the possible potential uses of this nanoparticles doped semiconductor NCs in terms of drug sensing, which could also be employed for the determination of drugs in quality control of formulation.

Abstract
Herein, we describe the prevalence of bacterial infections in Chinook salmon, Oncorhynchus tshawytscha (Walbaum), returning to spawn in two tributaries within the Lake Michigan watershed. Ten bacterial genera, including Renibacterium, Aeromonas, Carnobacterium, Serratia, Proteus, Pseudomonas, Hafnia, Salmonella, Shewanella and Morganella, were detected in the kidneys of Chinook salmon (n = 480) using culture, serological and molecular analyses. Among these, Aeromonas salmonicida was detected at a prevalence of ∼15%. Analyses revealed significant interactions between location/time of collection and gender for these infections, whereby overall infection prevalence increased greatly later in the spawning run and was significantly higher in females. Renibacterium salmoninarum was detected in fish kidneys at an overall prevalence of >25%. Logistic regression analyses revealed that R. salmoninarum prevalence differed significantly by location/time of collection and gender, with a higher likelihood of infection later in the spawning season and in females vs. males. Chi-square analyses quantifying non-independence of infection by multiple pathogens revealed a significant association between R. salmoninarum and motile aeromonad infections. Additionally, greater numbers of fish were found to be co-infected by multiple bacterial species than would be expected by chance alone. The findings of this study suggest a potential synergism between bacteria infecting spawning Chinook salmon.

Abstract
A complement-dependent 50% plaque neutralization test was used to assess the neutralizing antibody response in sera of muskellunge, Esox masquinongy, experimentally infected with viral haemorrhagic septicaemia virus (VHSV, genotype IVb) by immersion. Groups of muskellunge were challenged with varying concentrations of VHSV: Group 1 with 10(2) plaque-forming units (pfu) mL(-1) , Group 2 with 4 × 10(3) pfu mL(-1) , Group 3 with 10(5) pfu mL(-1) and Group 4 with 0 pfu mL(-1) . The fish were held at a temperature of 11 ± 1 °C and were sampled over a 20-week period. Neutralizing antibodies were not detected in sera of any of the negative control fish throughout the study. Low neutralizing titres were detected in Groups 1-3 by 6 days post-infection (p.i.). Neutralizing titres of ≥80 [corrected]. were not detected again until 3, 4 and 7 weeks p.i. for Groups 2, 3 and 1, respectively, with peak titres for those groups occurring 16, 11 and 17 weeks p.i., respectively. VHSV was detected in serum for up to 11 weeks p.i. Results of this study show that survivors can be detected by a serological technique, despite being virus negative. This may benefit the investigation of VHSV IVb distribution in the Great Lakes and the study of host immune responses to this emerging sublineage.

Abstract
CeO₂ nanoparticles were synthesized hydrothermally and utilized as redox mediator for the fabrication of efficient ethanol chemi-sensor. The developed chemi-sensor showed an excellent performance for electrocatalytic oxidization of ethanol by exhibiting higher sensitivity (0.92 μA∙cm⁻²∙mM⁻¹) and lower limit of detection (0.124±0.010 mM) with the linear dynamic range of 0.17 mM-0.17 M. CeO₂ nanoparticles have been characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Raman spectrum, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and UV-visible absorption spectrum which revealed that the synthesized CeO₂ is an aggregated form of optically active spherical nanoparticles with the range of 15-36 nm (average size of ~25±10 nm) and possessing well crystalline cubic phase. Additionally, CeO₂ performed well as a photo-catalyst by degrading amido black and acridine orange.

Abstract
Widespread mouth ulcerations were observed in largemouth bass collected from eight inland lakes in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan during the summer months of 2002 and 2003. These ulcerations were associated with, and most likely caused by, leech parasitism. Through the use of morphological dichotomous keys, it was determined that all leeches collected are of one species: Myzobdella lugubris. Among the eight lakes examined, Lake Orion and Devils Lake had the highest prevalence of leech parasitism (34% and 29%, respectively) and mouth ulcerations (53% and 68%, respectively). Statistical analyses demonstrated that leech and ulcer prevalence varied significantly from one lake to the other. Additionally, it was determined that the relationship between the prevalence of ulcers and the prevalence of leech attachment is significant, indicating that leech parasitism is most likely the cause of ulceration. The ulcers exhibited deep hemorrhagic centers and raised irregular edges. Affected areas lost their epithelial lining and submucosa, with masses of bacteria colonizing the damaged tissues. Since largemouth bass is a popular global sportfish and critical to the food web of inland lakes, there are concerns that the presence of leeches, damaged buccal mucosa, and general unsightliness may negatively affect this important sportfishery.

Abstract
A facile aqueous solution process was used to synthesize well-crystalline ZnO nanocones at 60 degrees C by using zinc nitrate hexahydrate and sodium hydroxide. The morphological, structural and optical properties of the synthesized ZnO nanocones were investigated by using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) attached with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) equipped with high-resolution (HRTEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and UV-Vis. spectroscopy measurements. The structural and optical properties of the as-synthesized nanocones confirmed a pure and well crystalline product possessing wurtzite hexagonal phase. The as-synthesized ZnO nanocones were used as photocatalyst for the efficient photocatalytic degradation of acridine orange. The acridine orange was almost completely degraded within 105 minutes. This research demonstrates that the simply synthesized ZnO nanostructures could be efficient photocatalyst for the photocatalytic degradation of various organic dyes and chemicals.

Abstract
In this paper, the high-yield facile synthesis, detailed characterization and photocatalytic application of alpha-Fe2O3 nanoparticles are reported. The synthesis was done via simple hydrothermal process by using aqueous mixtures of iron chloride, hexamethylenediamine and NH3 x H2O at 110 degrees C. The morphologies of the synthesized products were examined by using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) which confirmed that the synthesized structures are almost spherical shaped nanoparticles with the average diameters of -35 +/- 5 nm, and are grown in high yield. The detailed structural characterizations and composition of the as-synthesized nanoparticles were investigated by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), high-resolution TEM (HRTEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) attached with FESEM and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) which substantiated that the as-synthesized nanoparticles are well crystalline and pure alpha-Fe2O3. The UV-Vis absorption spectrum of the synthesized nanoparticles demonstrated the existence of two optical band gaps which correspond to direct and indirect transitions, respectively. The as-synthesized alpha-Fe2O3 nanoparticles exhibit good photocatalytic properties on photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue.

Abstract
Leeches are widespread in the Great Lakes Basin, yet their potential to harbor disease-causing agents has not been investigated. The purpose of this study was to identify the bacterial community of the commonly occurring leech, Myzobdella lugubris, within the Lake Erie Watershed. Leech samples were collected from the pectoral fins of channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus, and freshwater drum, Aplodinotus grunniens, from Lake Erie in commercial trap nets and pooled into two samples based on host attachment. Bacteria from within the viscera of M. lugubris were identified by sequencing their 16S rRNA (rDNA) gene of amplified community bacterial DNA extracted from pooled leech homogenate samples and were checked for similarity in two public databases: the Ribosomal Database Project and BLAST. Bacteria belonging to the phylum Bacteroidetes, beta-proteobacteria, Verrucomicrobia, and unclassified Bacteria were present in the leech samples. A large number of bacteria found within leeches attached to channel catfish consisted of sequences that could not be classified beyond the Domain Bacteria. However, many of these sequences were homologous (< 45%) to the phylum Bacteroidetes. One of the five genera detected in the leech homogenates was Flavobacterium psychrophilum, a serious fish pathogen that causes Bacterial Cold Water Disease. While the occurrence of genera varies, bacteria associated with the two fish species were similar.

Abstract
The limited water resources of Egypt lead to widespread water-stress. Consequently, the use of marginal water sources, such as agricultural drainage waters, provides one of the national feasible solutions to the problem. However, the marginal quality of the drainage waters may restrict their use. The objective of this research is to develop a tool for planning and managing the reuse of agricultural drainage water for irrigation in the Nile Delta. This is achieved by classifying the pollution levels of drainage water into several categories using a statistical clustering approach that may ensure simple but accurate information about the pollution levels and water characteristics at any point within the drainage system. The derived clusters are then visualized by using a Geographical Information System (GIS) to draw thematic maps based on the entire Nile Delta, thus making GIS as a decision support system. The obtained maps may assist the decision makers in managing and controlling pollution in the Nile Delta regions. The clustering process also provides an effective overview of those spots in the Nile Delta where intensified monitoring activities are required. Consequently, the obtained results make a major contribution to the assessment and redesign of the Egyptian national water quality monitoring network.

Abstract
The Great Lakes strain of viral haemorrhagic septicaemia virus (VHSV) isolated from adult subclinical muskellunge, Esox masquinongy (Mitchill), in Lake St. Clair, MI, USA was shown to be highly pathogenic in juvenile muskellunge through intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection and waterborne challenge. Mortality began as early as 3 days after exposure in waterborne challenged fish, whereas fish infected by the i.p. route experienced the first mortality by 5 days post-infection (p.i.). The median lethal intraperitoneal injection dose (IP-LD(50)) was approximately 2.21 plaque forming units (PFU) as opposed to the median lethal immersion challenge dose (IM-LD(50)) of 1.7 x 10(4) PFU mL(-1). A high, medium and low dose of infection caused acute, subacute and chronic progression of the disease, respectively, as was evident by the cumulative mortality data. Clinical signs of disease observed in dead and moribund fish were very pale gills, dermal petechial haemorrhages along the flanks, severe nuchal haemorrhages, intramuscular haemorrhages at the fin-muscle junction and focal haemorrhaging on the caudal peduncle. Internal lesions included livers that were pale, discoloured and friable, and kidneys that were either congested or degenerative in appearance, and petechial to ecchymotic haemorrhages on the swim bladder wall. Histopathologic examination demonstrated massive haemorrhages in the swimbladder wall and muscle, severe vacuolation and multifocal necrosis of the liver, multifocal necrosis of the gills and depletion of lymphoid tissues within the spleen. Kidney tissues also exhibited a mixed pattern of degeneration that included tubular necrosis, interstitial oedema and congestion. Virus was recovered from kidney and spleen tissues through tissue culture and reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR).

Abstract
One hundred and thirty-eight consecutive patients undergoing hip arthroplasty and accelerated discharge at our institution over 6 months were reviewed. Our protocol included transfer to a dedicated home support team. No minimal incision techniques or special anaesthetic/analgesic techniques were used. 66% of patients having primary joint replacements went home by the third post operative day and 91% by the fourth day. Re-admission rates were under 1% whilst under the care of the home support team. Patient satisfaction was high. 94% said they would use the service again. Abstract
Major histocompatibility (MH) class II genes play an important role in the vertebrate immune response. Here, we investigate the relationship between Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) MH class IIB zygosity and susceptibility to Renibacterium salmoninarum, the causal agent of bacterial kidney disease. By combining DNA sequences from the salmon MH class IIB gene with quantitative ELISA data on R. salmoninarum antigen levels, we found that MH class IIB homozygotes were significantly more susceptible to R. salmoninarum than heterozygotes. These findings are discussed in the context of current evolutionary theory.

Abstract
Bacterial kidney disease (BKD), caused by Renibacterium salmoninarum, is a widespread problem with major implications for salmonid fish species. The mechanisms by which the bacterium has reached high levels of infection previously unrecorded in the Laurentian Great Lakes are presently unknown. Research involving reservoirs and mechanisms of R. salmoninarum transmission in fish is lacking because of the ecologic complexity of heterogeneous habitats and the lack of adequate funding. Herein, we report on the isolation of R. salmoninarum from the kidneys of the sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus). The bacterium was cultured from kidneys of 16% and 4% of lampreys collected from two locations within the Lake Ontario watershed in 2003 and 2004, respectively. The identity of bacterial colonies was verified with the nested polymerase chain reaction and quantitative enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.

Abstract
AIMS This study assessed the plant growth-promoting ability of the bacterial strains Ochrobactrum intermedium (isolate CrT-1) and Bacillus cereus (isolate S-6). METHODS AND RESULTS Two chromium resistant bacterial strains isolated from chromium-contaminated wastewater and soils were identified as O. intermedium CrT-1 and B. cereus S-6. These strains were inoculated on seeds of mungbean Vigna radiata var NM-92, which were germinated and grown under chromate salts (300 microg ml(-1) of CrCl(3)or K(2)CrO(4)). The data show that Cr(VI) was more toxic because of its better availability to plants roots when compared with Cr(III). The major part of Cr(VI) supplied to the seedlings was reduced to Cr(III) in the rhizosphere by the bacterial strains, thus lowering the toxicity of chromium to seedlings. CONCLUSIONS Strains have significant Cr(VI) resistance and reduction potential and have ability to enhance mungbean plant growth under chromium stress. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY These strains could be utilized for the growth of economically important cash crops as well as for the bioremediation of chromium-polluted soils.
