Abstract
It is well-known that the quantum linear response theory is based on the first-order perturbation theory for a system in thermal equilibrium. Hence, this theory breaks down when the system is in a steady state far from thermal equilibrium and the response up to higher order in perturbation is not negligible. In this paper, we develop a nonlinear response theory for such quantum open system. We first formulate this theory in terms of general susceptibility, after which we apply it to the derivation of Hall conductance for open system at finite temperature. As an example, the Hall conductance of the two-band model is derived. Then we calculate the Hall conductance for a two-dimensional ferromagnetic electron gas and a two-dimensional lattice model. The calculations show that the transition points of topological phase are robust against the environment. Our results provide a promising platform for the coherent manipulation of the nonlinear response in quantum open system, which has potential applications for quantum information processing and statistical physics.

Abstract
Prehydrolysis of wood biomass prior to kraft cooking provides a stream containing hemicellulose-derived saccharides (HDSs) but also undesired non-saccharide compounds (NSCs) that were resulted from lignin depolymerization and carbohydrate degradation. In this study, a combined process consisting of lime treatment, resin adsorption, and gel filtration was developed to separate HDSs from NSCs. The macro-lignin impurities that accounted for 32.2% of NSCs were removed by lime treatment at 1.2% dosage with negligible HDSs loss. The majority of NSCs, lignin-derived phenolics, were eliminated by mixed bed ion exchange resin, elevating NSCs removal to 94.0%. The remaining NSCs, furfural and hydroxymethylfurfural, were excluded from HDSs by gel filtration. Chemical composition analysis showed that xylooligosaccharides (XOS) with the degree of depolymerization from 2 to 6 accounted for 28% of the total purified HDSs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze the prognosis about periodontal ligament healing of replanted permanent teeth in children and to examine the associated factors. METHODS The sample consisted of 49 children with 61 avulsed permanent teeth, whose injuries had been managed in the period from 2000 to 2012. The clinical data of replanted teeth were collected, and the follow-up period was no less than 12 months. The factors were analyzed in relation to postoperative outcomes, classified as functional periodontal healing (FH), infection-related (inflammatory) resorption (IRR) and replacement resorption (RR). RESULTS The functional healing rate was 23.0%, while replacement resorption rate was 72.1%. The replacement resorption (ankylosis) was usually observed earlier by clinical examination than by radiographic examination. 86.0% (40/47) resorptive processes were diagnosed within the first year. Physiological storages, such as milk, saline and saliva were significantly better to periodontal ligament healing than nonphysiological storages, such as tap water and sterilizing solutions (chloramine and alcohol). Functional healing was found significantly more frequent in canines and premolars. CONCLUSION The factor significantly affecting periodontal ligament healing is storage medium. Replacement resorption is the most common type of root resorption. The replacement resorption diagnosis must combine the radiographic examination with the clinical examination. It is better to follow up more than 1 year after tooth replantation.

Abstract
The effects of recycling on the microstructure and properties of bleached aspen chemithermomechanical pulp (CTMP) fibres were systematically investigated. The low-temperature nitrogen adsorption and atomic force microscopy results showed that a substantial amount of large pores and most of the very small pores in the fibre wall closed and the fibre surface became less coarse and porous during recycling. The partial cocrystallisation of cellulose microfibrils took place, as reflected in the increment of the cellulose crystallinity and the width of the crystallite in the 0 0 2 lattice plane. These irreversible structural changes caused significant hornification of the recycled fibres, leading to the loss of swelling and bonding capability. The decrease of the tensile index, burst index, and tear index further demonstrated the deterioration of the fibre properties. However, the single-fibre strength considerably increased after recycling, which was mainly due to the enlarged cellulose aggregates in the fibre wall.

Abstract
The specific elimination of lignin derivatives from wood hydrolysate without sugar loss has great practical significance to biorefinery and bioenergy. In the present study, a process consisting of calcium hydroxide and anion exchange resin treatments was developed for the purpose of selective removal of lignin from wood prehydrolysis liquor (PHL). Particular emphasis was made on the ionization of phenolic lignin, and the subsequent binding to metallic salts. It was observed that phenolic hydroxyl groups (PhOH) in lignin played an important role in lignin removal. The results showed that up to 95.2% lignin was removed from PHL with 78.8% sugar recovery. This suggested that the proposed process is highly specific to lignin, and therefore can be envisaged as a great contribution to wood-sugar production or bioenergy conversion.

Abstract
On the basis of the unknown tags in the mature human sperm serial analysis of gene expression library constructed by our laboratory, some transcripts were cloned, including Iqcf1 (IQ motif containing F1). To investigate the function of sperm-retained Iqcf1 in spermatogenesis and fertilization of mice, we investigated the spatial and temporal expression of IQCF1. By using the (transcription activator-like effector nuclease) strategy, Iqcf1-knockout mice were produced, and the phenotypes of the Iqcf1(-/-) mice were analyzed. The results showed that IQCF1 was localized in the acrosome of spermatozoa and spermatids; the expression of IQCF1 in testes was associated with spermatogenic capacity. The Iqcf1(-/-) mice were significantly less fertile than the wild-type mice (p = 0.0057) because of reduced sperm motility (p = 0.0094) and the acrosome reaction (AR) (p = 0.0093). In spermatozoa, IQCF1 interacted with calmodulin (CaM) and possibly participated in the tyrosine phosphorylation of sperm proteins during capacitation. In conclusion, a newly identified acrosomal protein, IQCF1, is closely related to sperm capacitation and AR; in particular, it is involved in tyrosine phosphorylation of sperm proteins through interaction with CaM. Research into the function of IQCF1 during fertilization could facilitate the investigation of the molecular mechanism of capacitation, which is unclear.

Abstract
Based on the formation of cellulose hydrogels in NaOH/urea aqueous solvent media, cellulose self-assembly precursor is acquired. It is proved that the water uptake capability of the cellulose hydrogels depends highly on the cross-link degree (CLD) of cellulose. With varying CLD and concentration of cellulose, a variety of morphologies of cellulose self-assemblies, including sheets with perfect morphology, high-aspect-ratio fibers, and disorganized segments and network, are formed through evaporation. Furthermore, cellulose films are fabricated by diecasting and evaporating the cellulose hydrogels, resulting in a 3D-ordered structure of closely stacking of cellulose sheets. The mechanical test indicates both tensile strength and flexibility of the cellulose films are greatly improved, which is attributed to the formation of the orderly stacking of cellulose sheets. The study is expected to lay an important foundation on the preparation of ordered and high-strength cellulose materials.

Abstract
Understanding the mechanisms of efficient and robust energy transfer in organic systems provides us with insights for the optimal design of artificial systems. In this paper, we explore the dynamics of excitation energy transfer (EET) through a complex quantum network by a toy model consisting of three sites coupled to environments. We study how the coherent evolution and the noise-induced decoherence work together to reach efficient EET and illustrate the role of the phase factor attached to the coupling constant in the EET. By comparing the differences between the Markovian and non-Markovian dynamics, we discuss the effect of environment and the spatial structure of system on the dynamics and the efficiency of EET. A intuitive picture is given to show how the exciton is transferred through the system. Employing the simple model, we show the robustness of EET efficiency under the influence of the environment and elucidate the important role of quantum coherence in EET. We go further to study the quantum feature of the EET dynamics by quantumness and show the importance of quantum coherence from a different perspective. We calculate the energy current in the EET and its quantumness, and results for different system parameters are presented and discussed.

Abstract
Tumour-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) have been found to play crucial roles in a series of cancers. However, the impact of these cells on gallbladder carcinoma (GBC) remains poorly understood. In this study, we examined infiltrating FoxP3+, IL-17+, CD4+ and CD8+ cells by immunohistochemistry in specimens of 104 patients with GBC and evaluated the association of these cells with clinicopathological features and prognosis. The number of FoxP3+ cells was increased in a stepwise manner from CC to GA and GBC (GA versus CC, P = 0.036; early GBC versus GA, P = 0.032; advanced versus early GBC, P = 0.025). Both intratumoral FoxP3+ and IL-17+ cells correlated with nodal metastasis and TNM stage. Additionally, there were more infiltrating FoxP3+ cells in specimens with distant metastasis (P = 0.014). The group with high FoxP3+ cells showed poor overall survival (OS, P < 0.001) and disease-free survival (DFS, P < 0.001), and high infiltration of IL-17-producing cells was also a predictor of poor OS (P = 0.024). Multivariate analysis revealed that the presence of intratumoral FoxP3+ cells was an independent prognostic indicator for poor DFS (P < 0.01). In summary, these findings indicate that FoxP3+ and IL-17+ cells cooperatively facilitate pathogenesis and progression of GBC and show prognostic significance for OS or DFS.

Abstract
Hot water extraction is an important strategy of wood fractionation, by which the hemicelluloses can be separated for value-added products, while the residual solid can still be processed into traditional wood products. In this study, a combined process consisting of specific lignin precipitation and dialysis was proposed to recover hemicellulosic oligosaccharides (OS) from hot water extract (HWE). The results showed that polyaluminium chloride (PAC) precipitation was highly specific to large molecular lignin, leading to 25.1% lignin removal with negligible OS loss through charge neutralization mechanism. The separation was further enhanced by dialysis, reaching 37.6% OS recovery from HWE with remarkable purity of 94.1%. By the proposed process, 56.36 g OS, mainly xylooligosaccharides with two fractions of 5.2 and 0.51 kDa was recovered from one kg dried wood. This process can be envisaged as a great contribution to wood biorefinery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Thermochemical pretreatment of lignocellulose is crucial to bioconversion in the fields of biorefinery and biofuels. However, the enzyme inhibitors in pretreatment hydrolysate make solid substrate washing and hydrolysate detoxification indispensable prior to enzymatic hydrolysis. Sulfite pretreatment to overcome recalcitrance of lignocelluloses (SPORL) is a relatively new process, but has demonstrated robust performance for sugar and biofuel production from woody biomass in terms of yield and energy efficiency. This study demonstrated the advantage of SPORL pretreatment whereby the presentation of lignosulfonate (LS) renders the hydrolysate non-inhibitory to cellulase (Cel) due to the formation of lignosulfonate-cellulase complexes (LCCs) which can mediate the Cel adsorption between lignin and cellulose, contrary to the conventional belief that pretreatment hydrolysate inhibits the enzymatic hydrolysis unless detoxified. RESULTS Particular emphasis was made on the formation mechanisms and stability phase of LCCs, the electrostatic interaction between LCCs and lignin, and the redistributed Cel adsorption between lignin and cellulose. The study found that LS, the byproduct of SPORL pretreatment, behaves as a polyelectrolyte to form LCCs with Cel by associating to the oppositely charged groups of protein. Compared to Cel, the zeta potential of LCCs is more negative and adjustable by altering the molar ratio of LS to Cel, and thereby LCCs have the ability to mitigate the nonproductive binding of Cel to lignin because of the enlarged electrostatic repulsion. Experimental results showed that the benefit from the reduced nonproductive binding outweighed the detrimental effects from the inhibitors in pretreatment hydrolysate. Specifically, the glucan conversions of solid substrate from poplar and lodgepole pine were greatly elevated by 25.9% and 31.8%, respectively, with the complete addition of the corresponding hydrolysate. This contradicts the well-acknowledged concept in the fields of biofuels and biorefinery that the pretreatment hydrolysate is inhibitory to enzymes. CONCLUSIONS The results reported in this study also suggest significant advantages of SPORL pretreatment in terms of water consumption and process integration, that is, it should abolish the steps of solid substrate washing and pretreatment hydrolysate detoxification for direct simultaneous saccharification and combined fermentation (SSCombF) of enzymatic and pretreatment hydrolysate, thereby facilitating bioprocess consolidation. Furthermore, this study not only has practical significance to biorefinery and bioenergy, but it also provides scientific importance to the molecular design of composite enzyme-polyelectrolyte systems, such as immobilized enzymes and enzyme activators, as well as to the design of enzyme separation processes using water-soluble polyelectrolytes.

Abstract
Rejects from sulfite pulp mill that otherwise would be disposed of by incineration were converted to ethanol by a combined physical-biological process that was comprised of physical refining and simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF). The energy efficiency was evaluated with comparison to thermochemically pretreated biomass, such as those pretreated by dilute acid (DA) and sulfite pretreatment to overcome recalcitrance of lignocelluloses (SPORL). It was observed that the structure deconstruction of rejects by physical refining was indispensable to effective bioconversion but more energy intensive than that of thermochemically pretreated biomass. Fortunately, the energy consumption was compensated by the reduced enzyme dosage and the elevated ethanol yield. Furthermore, adjustment of disk-plates gap led to reduction in energy consumption with negligible influence on ethanol yield. In this context, energy efficiency up to 717.7% was achieved for rejects, much higher than that of SPORL sample (283.7%) and DA sample (152.8%).

Abstract
We present a detailed study of a salt-free cationic/anionic (catanionic) surfactant system where a strongly alkaline cationic surfactant (tetradecyltrimethylammonium hydroxide, TTAOH) was mixed with a single-chain fluorocarbon acid (nonadecafluorodecanoic acid, NFDA) and a hyperbranched hydrocarbon acid [di-(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid, DEHPA] in water. Typically the concentration of TTAOH is fixed while the total concentration and mixing molar ratio of NFDA and DEHPA is varied. In the absence of DEHPA and at a TTAOH concentration of 80 mmol·L(-1), an isotropic L(1) phase, an L(1)/L(α) two-phase region, and a single L(α) phase were observed successively with increasing mixing molar ratio of NFDA to TTAOH (n(NFDA)/n(TTAOH)). In the NFDA-rich region (n(NFDA)/n(TTAOH) > 1), a small amount of excess NFDA can be solubilized into the L(α) phase while a large excess of NFDA eventually leads to phase separation. When NFDA is replaced gradually by DEHPA, the mixed system of TTAOH/NFDA/DEHPA/H(2)O follows the same phase sequence as that of the TTAOH/NFDA/H(2)O system and the phase boundaries remain almost unchanged. However, the viscoelasticity of the samples in the single L(α) phase region becomes higher at the same total surfactant concentration as characterized by rheological measurements. Cryo-transmission electron microscopic (cryo-TEM) observations revealed a microstructural evolution from unilamellar vesicles to multilamellar ones and finally to gaint onions. The size of the vesicle and number of lamella can be controlled by adjusting the molar ratio of NFDA to DEHPA. The dynamic properties of the vesicular solutions have also been investigated. It is found that the yield stress and the storage modulus are time-dependent after a static mixing process between the two different types of vesicle solutions, indicating the occurrence of a dynamic fusion between the two types of vesicles. The microenvironmental changes induced by aggregate transitions were probed by (19)F NMR as well as (31)P NMR measurements. Upon replacement of NFDA by DEHPA, the signal from the (19)F atoms adjacent to the hydrophilic headgroup disappears and that from the (19)F atoms on the main chain becomes sharper. This could be interpreted as an increase of microfluidity in the mixed vesicle bilayers at higher content of DEHPA, whose alkyl chains are expected to have a lower chain melting point. Our results provide basic knowledge on vesicle formation and their structural evolution in salt-free catanionic surfactant systems containing mixed ion pairs, which may contribute to a deeper understanding of the rules governing the formation and properties of surfactant self-assembly.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the variance of blood pressure of hypertensive diabetic patients undergoing continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD). METHODS Twenty hypertensive CAPD patients older than 40 years with diabetic nephropathy (DN-PD group) and twenty patients with chronic glomerular nephritis (CGN-PD group) were recruited. Peritoneal status and dialysis adequacy of the patients in the two groups were calculated using PD Adequest. All patients were given 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM). Parameters of blood pressure variation were calculated and compared between the two groups, which included 24 h systolic and diastolic blood pressure variability (24 h SBPV/DBPV) and coefficient of variation (24 h SBPCV/24 h DBPCV), daytime systolic anid diastolic blood pressure variability (dSBPV/ DBPV) and coefficient of variation (dSBPCV/dDBPCV), and night time systolic and diastolic blood pressure variability (nSBPV/ DBPV) and coefficient of variation (nSBPCV/nDBPCV). RESULTS No significant differences in clinical characteristics were found between the two groups of patients except for fast glucose. No significant differences in average systolic and diastolic blood pressures, average piulse pressure and mean 24 h, daytime, and nighttime arterial pressures were found between the two groups. However, the DN-PD group had significantly higher 24 h SBPV, 24 h SBPCV, dSBPV and dSBPCV than the CGN-PD group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Hypertensive diabetic nephropathy patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis have greater blood pressure variance than those with hypertensive chronic glomerular nephritis, despite a similar result of blood pressure control.

Abstract
Anterior partial fundoplication (AF) has been popularized by a lower risk of mechanical side effects. The question then emerges whether anterior partial wrap has a similar antireflux effect with Nissen fundoplication (NF). We therefore conducted a randomized study to compare the long-term outcome of anterior fundoplication with NF. One hundred patients who enrolled in the trial from May 2003 to March 2005 were randomized to laparoscopic AF or laparoscopic NF. Endoscopy, pH monitoring, manometry, a detailed questionnaire, and a visual analog symptom score were completed preoperative at 6, 12, 24, and 60 months after surgical procedures. The postoperative adverse effects such as dysphagia and flatulence were compared between the two groups. Revision surgery or maintenance proton pump inhibitor therapy was defined as failure. Fifty procedures were performed in each group. The outcome at 5 years follow-up was determined for 96 patients (96%; 49 patients in the AF group and 47 in the NF group). Three patients (3%) died of unrelated causes during follow-up, and one patient changed address. Both fundoplications were found to provide good control of reflux-related symptoms in most of the patients. For 96 patients followed up more than 5 years, gastroesophageal reflux symptoms were well controlled in 81 patients (84.38%); the mean DeMeester scores in the AF group decreased from 106.89 ± 14.12 to 12.67 ± 3.14 and in the NF group from 109.51 ± 17.98 to 10.81 ± 2.65, and the esophagitis was ameliorated visibly. Moreover, there were significantly fewer patients in the AF group who complained of flatulence. Compared with NF, anterior 180° partial fundoplication is an effective treatment of gastroesophageal reflux and associates with fewer postoperative adverse effects.

Abstract
Breast cancer is a common cancer in women, with a highly variable course, from inoffensive to lethal. To find a more effective strategy for its treatment, sodium valproate has been tested as an anti-cancer drug; it is the only clinically available histone deacetylase inhibitor. However, data about the effects of sodium valproate on breast cancer are insufficient in both animals and humans; studies have yielded conflicting conclusions. In particular, little is known about the association between expression of the metastasis suppressor Nm23H1 gene and breast cancer. We hypothesized that sodium valproate regulates NM23H1 expression, and affects migration and/or invasion. We found that sodium valproate at concentrations of 0.8-3.2 mM inhibits migration and modulates Nm23H1 gene expression in a concentration-dependent manner. Confluent MDA-MB-231 cells were scratched by a micropipette tip after VPA treatment for 24 h; 24 h later, the scratch was almostly closed in the 0 mM VPA-treated cells, while the 3.2 mM VPA-treated cells migrated the slowest. The cell migration ratio exposed to 0.8, 1.6 and 3.2 mM VPA was about 66.67, 30.67 and 26.67% (P < 0.05). We also found evidence that sodium valproate upregulates NM23H1 expression, which is a clue to its anti-cancer mode of action. The NM23H1 gene expression was relative fold increased determined by Western blotting at 3.2 mM VPA. Collectively, these observations indicate that sodium valproate has potential for use in breast cancer treatment.

Abstract
Several lines of clinical evidence support the idea that fragile X syndrome (FXS) may involve a dysregulation of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis function [Wisbeck et al. (2000) J Dev Behav Pediatr 21:278-282; Hessl et al. (2002) Psychoneuroendocrinology 27:855-872]. We had tested this idea in a mouse model of FXS (Fmr1 KO) and found that the hormonal response to acute stress was similar to that of wild-type (WT) mice [Qin and Smith (2008) Psychoneuroendocrinology 33:883-889]. We report here responses to chronic stress (CS) in Fmr1 KO mice. Following restraint for 120 min/d, 10 consecutive days, we assessed dendrite and spine morphology in basolateral amygdala (BLA). We also monitored behavior in an elevated plus maze (EPM) and the hormonal response to this novel spatial environment. After CS, mice of both genotypes underwent adrenal hypertrophy, but effects were greater in WT mice. Behavior in the EPM indicated that only WT mice had the expected increase in anxiety following CS. Serum corticosterone and adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) levels were both increased following the spatial novelty of EPM, and there were no differences between genotypes in the hormonal responses. BLA dendritic branching increased proximal to the soma in WT, but in Fmr1 KO mice branching was unaffected close to the soma and slightly decreased at one point distal to the soma. Similarly, spine density on apical and basal dendrites increased in WT but decreased in Fmr1 KO mice. Spine length on apical and basal dendrites increased in WT but was unaffected in Fmr1 KO mice. These differences in behavioral response and effects on neuron morphology in BLA suggest a diminished adaptive response of Fmr1 KO mice.

Abstract
Performance and efficiency of old newspaper (ONP) deinking by combining cellulase/hemicellulase with laccase-violuric acid system (LVS) were investigated in this study. Brightness, effective residual ink concentration (ERIC) and physical properties were evaluated for the deinked pulp. Fiber length, coarseness, specific surface area and specific volume were also tested. The changes of dissolved lignin during the deinking processes were measured with UV spectroscopy. The fiber morphology was observed with environmental scanning electronic microscopy (ESEM). Experimental results showed that, compared to the pulp deinked with each individual enzyme, ERIC was lower for the cellulase/hemicellulase-LVS-deinked pulp. This indicated that a synergy existed in ONP deinking using a combination of enzymes. After being bleached by H(2)O(2), enzyme-combining deinked pulp gave higher brightness and better strength properties. Compared with individual enzyme deinked pulp, average fiber length and coarseness decreased a little for the enzyme-combining deinked pulps. A higher specific surface area and specific volume of the pulp fibers were achieved. UV analysis proved that more lignin was released during the enzyme-combining deinking process. ESEM images showed that more fibrillation was observed on the fiber surface due to synergistic treatment.

Abstract
The Go-like potential at a residual level has been successfully applied to the folding of proteins in many previous works. However, taking into consideration more detailed structural information in the atomic level, the definition of contacts used in these traditional Go-models may not be suitable for all-atom simulations. Here, in this work, we develop a rational definition of contacts considering the screening effect in the crowded intramolecular environment. In such a scheme, a large amount of screened atom pairs are excluded and the number of contacts is decreased compared to the case of the traditional definition. These contacts defined by such a new definition are compatible with the all-atom representation of protein structures. To verify the rationality of the new definition of contacts, the folding of proteins CI2 and SH3 is simulated by all-atom molecular dynamics simulations. A high folding cooperativity and good correlation of the simulated Phi-values with those obtained experimentally, especially for CI2, are found. This suggests that the all-atom Go-model is improved compared to the traditional Go-model. Based on the comparison of the Phi-values, the roles of side chains in the folding are discussed, and it is concluded that the side-chain structures are more important for local contacts in determining the transition state structures. Moreover, the relations between side chain and backbone orderings are also discussed.

Abstract
Impairment of cognitive function is characteristic of untreated phenylketonuria in humans and in the pah(enu2) mouse model of phenylketonuria. We measured regional cerebral metabolic rate for glucose in the adult male pah(enu2) mouse to determine the effect of PKU on functional activity in brain and to discern what, if any, brain areas are affected. Our results demonstrate selective decreases (17-21%) in regions thought to be involved in executive function. Regions most significantly affected include prelimbic, anterior cingulate, orbital frontal and perirhinal cortex. Sensory and motor areas of cortex and hippocampus were remarkably unaffected.

Abstract
As a measure of functional activity we determined regional cerebral metabolic rate for glucose (rCMR(glc)) in adult, female wild type and fragile X (Fmr1 null) mice homozygous and heterozygous for the null mutation. To ascertain if the sexes differ with respect to the severity of the effects of the mutation we compared our results with results of our previous study on male Fmr1 null mice [Qin M, Kang J, Smith CB (2002) Increased rates of cerebral glucose metabolism in a mouse model of fragile X mental retardation. Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A 99:15758-15763.]. In contrast to the male Fmr1 null mouse, rCMR(glc) was unchanged in the homozygous female except in the dorsal raphe where rCMR(glc) was increased by 36%. There were no differences in rCMR(glc) between heterozygous and wild type female mice. We compared male and female mice for effects of the null mutation on behavior. We found that the female Fmr1 null mouse is similar to the male with deficits in performance on a passive avoidance task, general hyperactivity, and increased susceptibility to audiogenic seizures. Both homozygous and heterozygous female mice exhibited hyperactivity and increased susceptibility to seizures, whereas only the homozygous mice had a deficit on the passive avoidance test. Male Fmr1 null mice had a tendency for lower anxiety-like behavior in an open field, whereas this was not evident in females. Compared with male wild type, male Fmr1 null mice also had a diminished acoustic startle response at higher stimulus intensities, whereas all three female genotypes had responses similar to those of male Fmr1 null mice. Whether estrogen affords female Fmr1 null mice some protection from the effects of the mutation remains to be determined.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To estimate the prevalence of radiographic and symptomatic knee osteoarthritis (OA) in a population-based sample of elderly subjects in Beijing, China and compare it with that reported in the Framingham (Massachusetts) OA Study. METHODS We recruited a sample of persons age > or = 60, using door-to-door enumeration in randomly selected neighborhoods in Beijing. Subjects completed a home interview including questions on knee symptoms and a hospital examination including knee radiographs obtained during weight bearing. The protocol was identical to that used in the Framingham OA Study. A reader read intermingled Beijing and Framingham Study films to ensure high reliability. We defined a subject as having radiographic knee OA when the Kellgren/Lawrence grade was > or = 2 in at least 1 knee. Symptomatic knee OA was recorded as present when knee pain was reported and the symptomatic knee had radiographic OA. We estimated the prevalence of these entities in elderly subjects in Beijing and compared it with OA prevalence in Framingham, using an age-standardized prevalence ratio. RESULTS Of 2,180 age-eligible Beijing subjects contacted, knee radiographs were obtained in 1,787 (82.0%). The prevalence of radiographic knee OA was 42.8% in women and 21.5% in men. Symptomatic knee OA occurred in 15.0% of women and 5.6% of men. Compared with women of the same age in Framingham, women in Beijing had a higher prevalence of radiographic knee OA (prevalence ratio 1.45, 95% confidence interval 1.31-1.60) and of symptomatic knee OA (prevalence ratio 1.43, 95% confidence interval 1.16-1.75). The prevalence of knee OA in Chinese men was similar to that in their white US counterparts (for radiographic OA, prevalence ratio 0.90; for symptomatic OA, prevalence ratio 1.02). CONCLUSION Using identical methods and definitions to evaluate the prevalence of OA across populations, we found, surprisingly, that older Chinese women have a higher prevalence of knee OA than women in Framingham, Massachusetts. The prevalence in men was comparable. Possible explanations for these differences range from genetic differences to heavy physical activity among Chinese.

Abstract
Recently, a dual receptor agonist for human Flt3 and G-CSF receptors, progenipoietin-4 (ProGP-4), was shown to be highly effective in expanding DC in vivo. In this study, we examined the immunological activity of ProGP-4-generated dendritic cell (DC) in an HLA-A2.1 transgenic mouse system. ProGP-4 DC were found to be approximately equivalent in presenting a cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) peptide to a CTL line in vitro compared with bone marrow (BM)-derived DC and >20-fold more efficient than macrophages or B cells, and >100-fold better than BM-DC, macrophages, or B cells at presenting PADRE, a universal helper T cell epitope, to a T cell clone. The heightened epitope presentation by ProGP-4 DC was paralleled in vivo inasmuch as a >6-fold increase in CTL induction was observed compared with other APC populations following ex vivo loading with peptide. The in vitro and in vivo CTL responses stimulated by ProGP-4 DC could be further augmented by either culturing with tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) or co-loading with PADRE. Collectively, our results indicate that peptide-loaded ProGP-4-generated DC demonstrate potent antigenicity and immunogenicity for CTL, making them an attractive component of epitope-based vaccines.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The goal of this study was to determine the genes required for head and neck cancer development. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING Differential mRNA display analysis was performed using human papillomavirus Type-16 infected immortalized human oral keratinocytes (HOK-16B) and its benzo(a)pyrene-exposed tumorigenic derivative (HOK-16B-BaP-T). RESULTS Twenty-one differentially expressed cDNA clones were identified between the 2 cell lines. Clone 4 with no known homology showed lower expression in tumorigenic cells compared with either normal or immortalized oral keratinocytes. Clone 6 expression was elevated in several head and neck cancer cells, in addition to Burkitt's lymphoma Raji harboring latent Epstein-Barr virus. CONCLUSION These findings suggested that clone 6 may be involved in the oncogenic transformation whereas clone 4 may potentially function as a tumor suppressor gene. SIGNIFICANCE Differential mRNA analysis using the in vitro oral carcinogenesis model may help to identify important genetic markers for the early detection and progression of head and neck cancer.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To test the efficacy of locally produced Vi vaccine over a time period of longer than one year. METHODS A double-blinded, randomized field trial was performed in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in south-western China, using 30 micrograms doses of locally produced Vi. Enrolled subjects were 3-50 years of age, although the majority (92%) were school-aged children, who have the highest rate of typhoid fever in this setting. A total of 131,271 people were systematically allocated a single dose of 30 micrograms of Vi polysaccharide or saline placebo. The study population was followed for 19 months, with passive surveillance conducted in the Ministry of Health and the Regional Health and Anti-epidemic Centre (HAEC). Clinically suspected cases of typhoid fever were confirmed by blood culture, or by serological reaction with O-antigen (Widal tests). FINDINGS After 19 months, there were 23 culture-confirmed cases of typhoid fever in the placebo group versus 7 cases in the Vi group (Protective efficacy (PE) = 69%; 95% CI = 28%, 87%). Most of the isolates were from school-aged children: 22 cases in the placebo group versus 6 in the Vi group (PE = 72%; 95% CI = 32%, 82%). No serious post-injection reactions were observed. The locally produced Vi polysaccharide vaccine showed levels of protective efficacy similar to those for Vi vaccine produced in industrial countries. CONCLUSION The slightly higher dose of vaccine did not seem to alter efficacy significantly in China.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To raise the vigilance for pregnancy complicated with acute abdominal diseases and to reduce the maternal mortality rate. METHODS A retrospective study was done. RESULTS (1) The maternal mortality of pregnancy complicated with acute abdominal diseases was 1.31/10(5) in the period of 1989-1993, which was significantly higher than that in the period of 1994-1998 (0.71/10(5)). (2) The main cause of maternal deaths was misdiagnosis and the rate of misdiagnosis was 72.7%. (3) Among the acute abdominal diseases, pregnancy complicated with pancreatitis ranked the first that accounted for 54.6%. CONCLUSIONS For the purpose of reducing the mortality rate of pregnancy complicated with acute abdominal diseases, the correct diagnosis and proper treatment especially for those with acute pancreatitis are important.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the physiological function of the midgastric-transverse band (MTB) in the modification of intragastric food distribution in digestive period. METHODS 18 healthy subjects(HS) and 18 patients with functional dyspepsia(FD) participated in this study. After fasting over 8 hours all subjects took 150 ml of milk (777 J) mixed with 150 g Magnesium Sulfate, and laid supinely on 30 degrees angle with horizontal line, X-ray films were taken at 0, 30, 60, and 90 minutes after the meal, respectively. Analyzed parameters included the width of MTB, the total, proximal and distal gastric area (TGA, PGA and DGA), the ratio of proximal and distal stomach during every 30 minutes period, the correlation between MTB and PGA, MTB and DGA. RESULTS (1) There was significant difference of MTB and DGA in every period postprandially (P < 0.05 or 0.01), by contrast, there were no significant differences of TGA or PGA between HS and FD except at TGA 90 min (P < 0.05). (2) There were close correlation between MTB and PGA at 0 (P < 0.01), 30 (P < 0.01), 60 min (P < 0.01) after the meal in HS, but only at 0 min (P < 0.01) in FD. Also close correlations between MTB and DGA at 60 (P < 0.01) and 90 min (P < 0.01) in HS, but in FD. (3) the ratios of PGA from 0-30 min and 60-90 min in FD significantly decreased respectively, however the other ratios were shown no significant difference between HS and FD during each period. (4) there were close correlations between PGA and MTB at 0, 30, 60 min after the meal in HS, however except 0 min there were no correlations in FD. By contrast, between DGA and MTB there were close correlations at 60, or 90 min in HS, no correlation in FD at any time point. CONCLUSIONS MTB may play an important role in modifying intragastric food distribution in HS, while the dysfunction of MTB may result in the distal gastric overloading in FD, the mechanism of MTB needs further studies.

Abstract
As part of an effort to isolate new Arabidopsis mutants specifically defective in responsiveness to red light, we identified srl1 (short hypocotyl in red light) by screening an EMS-mutagenized M2 population derived from a phytochrome B (phyB)-overexpressor line (ABO). The srl1 mutant shows enhanced responsiveness to continuous red but not far-red light, in both wild-type and ABO backgrounds, consistent with involvement in the phyB-signaling pathway but not that of phyA. The hypersensitive phenotype of srl1 is not due to overexpression of endogenous phyA or phyB, and the locus maps to the center of chromosome 2, distinct from any other known photomorphogenic mutants. srl1 seedlings display enhancement of several phyB-mediated responses, including shorter hypocotyls, more expanded cotyledons, shorter petioles and modestly higher levels of CAB gene expression under red light than the wild type. Double mutant analyses show that the hypersensitive phenotype of srl1 is completely phyB-dependent. The data suggest, therefore, that SRL1 may encode a negatively acting component specific to the phyB-signaling pathway.
