Abstract
AIM Abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) affects about 30% of women in childbearing age with negative impact on patient's quality of life and uterine myomas represent one of the major cause of AUB. Laparoscopic myomectomy has proven to be efficient to reduce uterine bleeding and pelvic pain, but some patients presents postsurgery menhorragia with anemia. To reduce it, the combined use of levonorgestrel releasing intrauterine system (LNG-IUS) positioned at the end of surgery, seems to produce a clinically relevant decrease in AUB with a symptomatology improvement. The aim of this study was to retrospectively evaluate if postsurgery placement of LNG-IUS improves hematological outcomes (hemoglobin and ferritin level) in woman submitted to laparoscopic myomectomy. METHODS We retrospectively collected data from 58 women who underwent laparoscopic myomectomy from September 2010 to September 2011. Twenty-six patients were treated by laparoscopic myomectomy followed by LNG-IUS positioning at the end of surgery (Experimental group) and thirty-two patients were treated by surgery alone (Control group). We compared blood hemoglobin and ferritin levels assessed preoperatively, in day one and 6, 12 and 18 months after surgery. RESULTS There was a statistically significant improvement in terms of post-surgery hemoglobin and ferritin levels at 6 month follow up (P=0.02 and P=0.002 respectively) and 12 month follow-up (P=0.001 and P=0.001, respectively) in experimental group vs. control group and a positive trend, but not statistically significant, in ferritin levels at 18 month-follow-up (P=0.1). CONCLUSION Our data suggest that combined treatment with laparoscopic myomectomy followed by LNG-IUS produces a clinically relevant improvement in hematological values.

Abstract
Ectodermal dysplasias (EDs) are a group of genetic disorders characterized by the abnormal development of the ectodermal-derived structures. X-linked hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia, resulting from mutations in ED1 gene, is the most common form. The main purpose of this study was to characterize the phenotype spectrum in 45 males harboring ED1 mutations. The study showed that in addition to the involvement of the major ectodermal tissues, the majority of patients also have alterations of several minor ectodermal-derived structures. Characterizing the clinical spectrum resulting from ED1 gene mutations improves diagnosis and can direct clinical care.

Abstract
An increasing body of experimental evidence demonstrates that the glutamatergic system is involved in the genesis of l-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA)-induced dyskinesia (LID). Indeed, the N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist amantadine is the only anti-dyskinetic compound used in patients, albeit with limited efficacy and side effects. In this study, we investigated the anti-dyskinetic properties of memantine, a non-competitive NMDA receptor antagonist in clinical use for the treatment of dementia, in the 6-hydroxy-dopamine (6-OHDA)-lesion rat model of Parkinson's disease. For comparison, parallel experiments were also performed with amantadine. First, we investigated the acute effect of different doses of memantine (5, 10, 15 and 20mg/kg), and amantadine (10, 20, 40, 60mg/kg) on established dyskinesia induced by L-DOPA (6mg/kg plus benserazide). Results showed that both memantine and amantadine produced a significant reduction of LID. Afterward, drug-naïve and L-DOPA-primed 6-OHDA-lesioned rats were sub-chronically treated with daily injections of L-DOPA (6mg/kg plus benserazide) alone, or in combination with the effective doses of memantine, while amantadine was tested in already dyskinetic rats. Results showed that memantine significantly dampened dyskinesia in both drug-naïve and L-DOPA-primed rats, but only during the first few days of administration. In fact, the anti-dyskinetic effect of memantine was completely lost already at the fifth administration, indicating a rapid induction of tolerance. Interestingly, a 3-week washout period was not sufficient to restore the anti-dyskinetic effect of the drug. Similarly, amantadine was able to dampen already established dyskinesia only during the first day of administration. Moreover, memantine partially decreased the therapeutic effect of L-DOPA, as showed by the result of the stepping test. Finally, loss of the anti-dyskinetic effect of memantine was associated to increased synaptic GluN2A/GluN2B ratio at striatal synaptic membranes. Our results are in line with clinical observations suggesting that NMDA receptor blockade may only be transiently effective against LID in PD patients.

Abstract
Diagnosis of invasive fungal infection remains challenging. Here we report a case of early diagnosis of invasive aspergillosis in a neutropenic patient affected by acute myeloid leukaemia, achieved through the detection of Aspergillus fumigatus species-specific ribonucleic acid sequences by a sensitive multiplex real-time polymerase chain reaction-based molecular assay. Thanks to the early diagnosis, targeted therapy was promptly established and the severe fungal infection controlled, allowing the patient to subsequently receive allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation from a haploidentical donor, her only curative option. Also in this instance, targeted secondary antifungal prophylaxis with voriconazole avoided any other fungal infection afterwards. This report suggests how the implementation of molecular assays in combination with routine diagnostic procedures, can improve microbiological diagnosis in sepsis, particularly in case of fungal infection, difficult to detect with standard microbiological culture methods.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Supervised machine learning has been proposed as a revolutionary approach for identifying sensitive medical image biomarkers (or combination of them) allowing for automatic diagnosis of individual subjects. The aim of this work was to assess the feasibility of a supervised machine learning algorithm for the assisted diagnosis of patients with clinically diagnosed Parkinson's disease (PD) and Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP). METHOD Morphological T1-weighted Magnetic Resonance Images (MRIs) of PD patients (28), PSP patients (28) and healthy control subjects (28) were used by a supervised machine learning algorithm based on the combination of Principal Components Analysis as feature extraction technique and on Support Vector Machines as classification algorithm. The algorithm was able to obtain voxel-based morphological biomarkers of PD and PSP. RESULTS The algorithm allowed individual diagnosis of PD versus controls, PSP versus controls and PSP versus PD with an Accuracy, Specificity and Sensitivity>90%. Voxels influencing classification between PD and PSP patients involved midbrain, pons, corpus callosum and thalamus, four critical regions known to be strongly involved in the pathophysiological mechanisms of PSP. COMPARISON WITH EXISTING METHODS Classification accuracy of individual PSP patients was consistent with previous manual morphological metrics and with other supervised machine learning application to MRI data, whereas accuracy in the detection of individual PD patients was significantly higher with our classification method. CONCLUSIONS The algorithm provides excellent discrimination of PD patients from PSP patients at an individual level, thus encouraging the application of computer-based diagnosis in clinical practice.

Abstract
An increased R2 recovery component of the blink reflex (R2-BRrc) has been observed in Parkinson's disease (PD), cranio-cervical dystonia, dystonic tremor and essential tremor with associated resting tremor (rET), while the BRrc was reported normal in patients with essential tremor (ET). Distinguishing rET from tremor dominant PD (tPD) may be challenging especially in the first stages of the diseases, in the absence of DAT-SPECT investigation. We evaluated the possible usefulness of BRrc for differentiating subjects with de novo tPD from those with rET. We investigated R2-BRrc at interstimulus intervals (ISI) of 100, 150, 200, 300, 400, 500 and 750 ms in 11 participants with tPD, 10 with rET and 20 healthy controls. All participants underwent DAT-SPECT and cardiac MIBG scintigraphy. R2 recovery was significantly enhanced in tPD compared to controls at all investigated ISIs (p < 0.001), while in subjects with rET patients BRrc was significantly increased compared to controls at ISI 150, 200, 300, 400, 500 and 750 ms (p < 0.001). At ISI 100 R2-BRrc distinguished patients participants with de novo tPD from those with rET with a sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of 100%. Our findings demonstrate the usefulness of BRrc for differentiating de novo tPD from rET.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The possible role of the venous system in the pathogenesis of chronic neurodegenerative diseases has been hypothesized for decades. Quite recently, the description of a venous condition defined as chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency (CCSVI) and its strong association with multiple sclerosis (MS) has brought back the attention of the scientific community to the hypothesis of an aetiological or concomitant role of an altered venous function in the occurrence of this pathology. CCSVI is identified by sonographic criteria, thus the indication for its possible treatment is based on ultrasound findings. METHOD We retrospectively examined 167 consecutive patients affected by clinically defined MS and CCSVI, identified by ultrasound assessment by the presence of at least two sonographic criteria. Ultrasonographic diagnosis of CCSVI was then integrated by venography and intravascular ultrasound examination (in 43 patients). Patients were all submitted to endovascular procedure (venoplasty). RESULTS In 37% of cases there was no correspondence between the preoperative ultrasound assessment and the venographic findings. In the event of incongruity between venography and sonography, the intravascular ultrasound examination investigation, when performed, confirmed ultrasound findings in 42% of cases and venography results in 58%. At one month in 12% of cases ultrasound assessment showed the persistence of altered flux. In 67% of cases patients reported subjective amelioration, regarding non-specific symptoms. CONCLUSION The pathophysiology of CCSVI is yet to be defined. The superior cava venous system is highly complex in terms of anatomy and possible anomalies, as well as its haemodynamic mechanisms. Further studies are required to define the parameters of diagnosis and treatment of CCSVI.

Abstract
AIM Aim of the study was to evaluate the effects of 24 weeks administration of myo-inositol plus folic acid (Inofert ®) on clinical, endocrine and metabolic parameters of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) patients. METHODS Seventy women, 18 to 35 years, were enrolled; 35 patients were enrolled as study group and treated with Inofert ® (200 µg folic acid plus myo-inositol 2 g per day) for 24 weeks. The other 35 patients, similar at baseline to patients in the study group, were enrolled as control group and received no treatment. In all patients the restoration of ovulation and variations of the endocrine and metabolic profile after treatment were assessed. RESULTS After 24 weeks, only five of 35 patients treated with Inofert® and 14 of 35 patients in the control group remained anovulatory and this difference was statistically significant. Body mass index decreased significantly in the study group, while a non-significant increasing was recorded in the control group. Moreover, non-significant reduction in circulating levels of LDL, and a statistically significant increase in the levels of HDL in the study group were observed. CONCLUSION Treatment with Inofert® allows to restore rapidly spontaneous ovulation in amenorrheic patients with PCOS and shows a significant advantage in terms of reduction in BMI and a positive trend in terms of changes in serum lipid profile.

Abstract
Indolylglyoxylamides are a class of distinctive benzodiazepine receptor ligands, proposed in the mid-eighties as open analogues of -carbolines. Thorough and long-lasting studies of their structure-activity relationships led to the development of a great deal of derivatives, to satisfy increasingly structural and pharmacophoric requirements of the benzodiazepine binding site in the central nervous system. Efforts to pre-organize their flexible structure in the three-dimensional shape adopted when bound to the receptor led to the identification of two novel classes of rigid ligands, characterized by planar tricyclic heteroaromatic cores: the [1,2,4]triazino[4,3-a]benzimidazol-4(10H)-one and the [1,2,3]triazolo[1,2-a][1,2,4]benzotriazin-1,5(6H)-dione. The present review focuses on these selected classes of ligands, whose rational development, in terms of chemical structures and structure-activity relationships, will be fully discussed.

Abstract
Kit is a growth factor receptor of the type III tyrosine kinase family, whose gain-of-function mutations have been identified as driving causes of different kinds of tumours. It thus represents a viable drug target, and the development of Kit inhibitors has been shown to be a promising therapeutic concept. This review will focus on structural and signalling properties of both wild-type and mutant Kit, as well as its role in the development of human cancers. Special attention will be dedicated to gastrointestinal stromal tumours, GISTs. Progress in research on the aetiopathogenesis of GISTs and their therapeutic approaches will be fully discussed, focusing on the latest tendencies for the treatment of these kinds of tumours.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Magnetic resonance parkinsonism index (MRPI) has been proposed as a powerful tool to discriminate patients with progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) from those with Parkinson disease (PD) or other parkinsonisms, on an individual basis. We investigated the usefulness of MRPI in predicting the clinical evolution in PSP of patients with clinically unclassifiable parkinsonism (CUP), i.e., parkinsonism not fulfilling the established clinical diagnostic criteria for any parkinsonian disorders, using a cohort study. METHODS Forty-five patients with CUP underwent baseline clinical evaluation and MRI with calculation of MRPI. All patients were divided in 2 groups according to MRPI values. A group included 30 patients with CUP with normal MRPI values while the other group included 15 patients with CUP with MRPI values suggestive of PSP (higher than 13.55). A clinical follow-up was performed in all patients. RESULTS Duration of clinical follow-up in these 2 groups was 28.4 ± 11.7 months (mean ± SD). None of the patients with CUP with normal MRPI values fulfilled established clinical criteria for PSP (follow-up ranging from 24 to 60 months). By contrast, 11 of 15 patients with CUP with abnormal MRPI values (higher than 13.55) developed during the follow-up (range from 6 to 48 months) additional clinical features characteristic of probable (1 patient) or possible (10 patients) PSP. MRPI showed a higher accuracy in predicting PSP (92.9%) than clinical features, such as vertical ocular slowness or first-year falls (61.9% and 73.8%, respectively). CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that MRPI is more powerful than clinical features in predicting the evolution of CUP toward PSP phenotypes.

Abstract
Rest tremor associated with essential tremor (ET) is a condition that poses challenges in diagnosing Parkinson's disease (PD). We investigated tremor parameters in PD and ET patients with rest tremor. Fifteen patients with PD and 15 patients with ET underwent electrophysiological examination to evaluate characteristics of muscle bursting in rest postures. Rest tremor amplitude of PD patients was significantly higher than that of patients with ET (p = 0.002), whereas burst duration and frequency were significantly higher in ET than in PD group (p = 0.002, p < 0.001, respectively). Patients with PD, however, showed some overlap of these electrophysiological values with values from patients with ET. By contrast, rest tremor pattern showed no overlap between the two diseases, because all patients with ET presented a synchronous pattern whereas PD patients had an alternating pattern (p < 0.001), a finding that differentiated the patients on an individual basis. The electromyographic pattern of rest tremor may help to differentiate PD from ET.

Abstract
Mutations in the gene DJ-1 have been shown to be a rare cause of early-onset Parkinson's disease (EOPD). Since DJ-1 mutations have been found in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) from southern Italy, we aimed to investigate whether polymorphisms within the DJ-1 gene could represent a risk factor for sporadic PD. First, we genotyped 294 patients with PD and 298 controls coming from southern Italy to assess the distribution of the insertion/deletion (Ins/Del) polymorphism. In a second phase, we identified five single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) useful to delimit a region potentially involved and genotyped all patients and controls for these markers. All the markers analyzed were significantly associated with PD at both allelic and genotypic level. The most significant association with the disease was found at the Ins/Del polymorphism (p = 0.0001; adjusted odds ratio (OR ) = 2.05; confidence interval (CI ) = 1.36-3.08). When we considered a three-marker sliding window, we found a highly significant association between the disease and the haplotypes including markers rs17523802, Ins/Del, and rs3766606 (p = 0.0007) and markers Ins/Del, rs3766606 and rs7517357 (p = 0.0054). Our results indicate that polymorphisms located in a region spanning 3535 bp from the promoter to the intron 2 of the DJ-1 gene confer risk to sporadic PD in southern Italy.

Abstract
The clinical and immunologic effects of lactoferrin and curcumin (LC) oral supplementation were examined in healthy children with recurrent respiratory tract infections. Infections were reduced in children receiving LC. Immunologic analyses showed that LC supplementation resulted in a significant skewing of CD8+T lymphocytes maturation. Additionally: 1) CD14+, toll like receptor (TLR) 2-expressing cells augmented (p= 0.005) whereas CD14+/TLR4+ diminished (p= 0.004); and 2) IL10 production by CD14+ cells was reduced in children receiving LC. LC supplementation results in immune modulation and could be clinically beneficial.

Abstract #2157
Background: Liposomal-Encapsulated Doxorubicin (LED) shows equivalent efficacy, better cardiac tolerability at higher cumulative dose than conventional anthracyclines in breast cancer treatment.
Methods: Sixteen pts were enrolled in a dose-finding study of LED (TLC-D99 Myocet ®) associated to Docetaxel (TXT). Twelve pts were treated with a fixed TXT dose (50 mg/m2) and TLC-D99 at three dose levels, 40-45-50 mg/m2, days 1 and 15 every 2 weeks using an intra- and inter-patient approach; four pts wrere treated at the TLC-D99 recommended dose (50 mg/m2). Cardiac monitoring of LVEF was performed every two cycles; Precursor Brain Natriuretic Peptide (proBNP) and cardiac Troponin (c-TnI) before and after 24 h chemotherapy was evaluated.
 Results: Breast cancer (BC) disease extension: metastatic (MBC), 8; locally advanced BC, 5; T2-T3 BC, 3. Previous chemotherapy: untreated, 11 pts; adjuvant, 5 pts. Enrolled pts for each dose-level: I, 7; II, 9; III, 14. Newly treated pts: I dose-level, 7; II dose-level, 3; III dose-level, 6. Valuable cycles for each dose-level in a total 77 cycles: I, 14; II, 21; III, 42. DLTs were observed in 3 pts, 21%, and 3 cycles, 4%: 2 cardiac, characterized by a 19% LVEF decrease and a symptomatic arrhythmia; one G4 hematologic resistant to G-CSF. DLTs for each dose-level by pts and cycles, respectively: I, 14% (1/7 pts) and 7% (1/14 cycles); II, no DLT in 9 pts and 21 cycles; III, 14% (2/14 pts) and 5% (2/42 cycles). Cumulative G3-4 toxicities by pts and cycles, respectively: cardiac arrhythmia 6% and 1,3%, cardiac general (symptomatic LVEF decrease), 6% and 1,3%; alopecia 81% and 65%; neutropenia resistant to G-CSF, 6% and 1,3%. Cardiac DLTs were observed in 2 elderly pts (>65 y). The 2 cardiac DLTs were observed in 2 out of 3 pts with pre-existing diastolic dysfunction. No pathologic increase of c-TnI levels was detected. Seven pts showed increased pro-BNP after chemotherapy; 1 of these with increased pro-BNP after chemotherapy, persistent the day 1 of each subsequent chemotherapy showed a DLT;
G2 toxicities by patients and cycles, respectively: asthenia 37% and 18%, stomatitis/mucositis 12% and 5%, nausea 31% and 12%. Median rDI of TLC-D99 was 25 mg/m2/w and TXT 25 mg/m2/w for pts, respectively. Preliminary efficacy in 16 assessable pts: LA-BC and MBC, 1 CR (pCR) 7 PR (OR 62%), 4 SD and 1 PD; T2-T3 BC, 2 PR and 1 SD.
Conclusion: dose-dense TLC-D99/Docetaxel association can be safely recommended at the dose of 50 mg/m2 for each drug. Docetaxel intensification is ongoing.

Abstract
Repetitive stimulation of dopamine receptors located in the basal ganglia may lead to the manifestation of sensitized, abnormal, motor responses in dopamine-denervated rats. In order to study the role of motor behavior execution on the expression of these altered motor responses, we evaluated how "priming", a phenomenon displaying neurochemical and behavioral features peculiar to a sensitized abnormal motor response in dopamine-denervated rats, depends on actual movement performance. To this end, unilaterally 6-hydroxydopamine-lesioned rats received apomorphine (0.2 mg/kg s.c.), being either allowed to move or immobilized (1 h) before, concomitantly to, or after its administration, respectively. Three days after apomorphine, the dopamine D(1) receptor agonist 1-Phenyl-2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-(1H)-3-benzazepine-7,8-diol (SKF 38393, 3 mg/kg s.c.) was administered to all animals. Rats that had performed rotational behavior following apomorphine administration displayed robust contraversive rotational behavior in response to SKF 38393, whereas rats that had been immobilized concomitantly to, but neither before nor after apomorphine, did not. To clarify whether stress, which may be increased by immobilization, mediated the results observed, additional rats received apomorphine paired with immobilization plus the corticosterone-synthesis inhibitor metyrapone (100 mg/kg i.p.), or apomorphine paired with a tail stressor, being not immobilized. Metyrapone did not affect the capacity of immobilization to prevent priming and tail stressor imposition did not affect priming magnitude, suggesting that stress has minimal or no effect on the results observed. This study demonstrates how movement performance following initial dopaminergic stimulation governs the occurrence of a sensitized, abnormal, motor response to a subsequent dopaminergic challenge in dopamine-denervated rats.

Abstract
Dementia is a common complication of Parkinson's disease (PD). It correlates significantly with the presence of cortical, limbic or nigral Lewy bodies, mainly constituted of alpha-synuclein. Mutations of the alpha-synuclein gene (SNCA) have been linked to rare familial forms of PD, while association studies on the promoter polymorphisms have given conflicting results in sporadic patients. We have performed a case control study to investigate whether genetic variability in the promoter of the alpha-synuclein gene could predispose to dementia in PD. A total of 114 demented patients and 114 non-demented patients with sporadic PD were included in the study. Six polymorphic loci (including the Rep1 microsatellite) in the promoter of the SNCA gene were examined. Each marker, taken individually, did not show association to dementia and no significant differences were observed in the inferred haplotype frequencies of demented and non-demented patients. Our data suggest the lack of involvement of the SNCA promoter in the pathogenesis of dementia in PD. Further studies in other populations are needed to confirm these results.

Abstract
AIM The aim of the study was to compare the effects of total laparoscopic hysterectomy with those of vaginal hysterectomy. METHODS We conducted a prospective randomised trial on 400 patients who agreed to be randomized to either laparoscopic total hysterectomy or vaginal hysterectomy. They were monitored for one year to evaluate the rate of major complications and the results on quality of life. RESULTS Total laparoscopic hysterectomy was associated with a higher rate of major haemorrhages and ureteric injuries than vaginal hysterectomy (7% vs 2.5% and 2.5% vs 0%; P<0.05) only during the first year of study according to a normal learning-curve. It took longer to perform (85.9 min vs 46.6 min), but was less painful (visual analogue scale 5.3 vs 6.0; P<0.01) and there was a shorter stay in hospital after the operation (2.9 vs 3.3 days). Six weeks after the operation, total laparoscopic hysterectomy was associated with less pain and better quality of life than vaginal hysterectomy (SF-12). CONCLUSION Total laparoscopic hysterectomy was associated with a significantly higher rate of major haemorrhages and ureteric injuries than vaginal hysterectomy only during the first year of study according to a normal learning-curve. It took longer to perform but was associated with less pain, quicker recovery, and better short term quality of life.

Abstract
AIM This study compares the effects of laparoscopic lymphadenectomy versus those of abdominal lymphadenectomy in patients with endometrial cancer. METHODS A prospective randomized study was performed among 80 patients randomly assigned to laparoscopic lymphadenectomy and to abdominal lymphadenectomy in the treatment of endometrial cancer. Clinical outcomes and complications were compared for 1 year of follow-up. RESULTS Forty patients were assigned to laparoscopic lymphadenectomy and 40 patients to abdominal lymphadenectomy. The laparoscopic approach was associated with a longer operative time (234.1 min vs 137.3 min) but was less painful (VAS 5.3 vs 7.9; P<0.000) and resulted in a shorter hospital stay (4.4+/-1 vs 7.9+/-1.2 days; P<0.000). At 6 weeks the quality of life was better in patients who had laparoscopic lymphadenectomy (SF-12). CONCLUSION Laparoscopic lymphadenectomy was associated with a significantly lower rate of major and minor postoperative complications and a better short term quality of life.

Abstract
AIM The aim of this study was to compare surgical complications and clinical outcomes after supracervical versus total laparoscopic hysterectomy for the control of abnormal uterine bleeding or symptomatic uterine leiomyomata. METHODS We conducted a prospective randomized trial on 141 patients who had laparoscopic hysterectomy for symptomatic uterine leiomyomata, abnormal bleeding refractory to hormonal treatment, or both. Patients were randomly assigned to receive a supracervical or total laparoscopic hysterectomy. We compared surgical complications and clinical outcomes for 2 years after randomization. RESULTS Seventy-one participants were assigned to supracervical laparoscopic hysterectomy (SLH) and 70 to total laparoscopic hysterectomy (TLH). Hysterectomy by either techniques led to statistically significant reductions in most symptoms, including pelvic pain or pressure, back pain and urinary incontinence. Patients assigned to SLH tended to have more hospital readmissions than those randomized to TLH. There were no statistically significant differences in the rate of complications, degree of symptoms improvement, or activity limitation. Participants weighing more than 100 kg at study entry were more than twice as likely to be readmitted to the hospital during the 2-year of follow-up (OR 2.48, 95% CI 0.11; 1.91, P=0.04). CONCLUSIONS We did not observe statistically significant differences between SLH and TLH in surgical complications and clinical outcomes during the 2-years of follow-up.

Abstract
Olive oil extraction is one of the most important traditional food industries in the Mediterranean region, especially in Italy. In addition to olive oil, this industry produces by-products, in particular olive mill wastewaters (OMWs) and olive husks, which represent a serious environmental problem. OMWs can be rarely treated in a municipal WWTP, using conventional wastewater treatments. A novel biological process has to be considered in order to treat OMWs. Literature data show that yeasts and different kinds of fungi are able to reduce both the organic and the phenolic content of the OMW. The present work is aimed at investigating the growth of a biomass rich in fungi in a batch reactor filled with OMW and its capacity to degrade the organic and phenolic load. The aerobic OMW degradation obtained using this biomass reached a COD and TP removal efficiency of 86 and 70%, respectively. Respirometric tests have been carried out in order to measure the biomass activity on different substrates: OMW and phenolic compounds (gallic and p-coumaric acids). The polyphenolic biodegradation efficiency of fungi biomass was higher than the one of a non-acclimated activated sludge biomass. Fungi biomass was able to completely degrade pure phenolic compounds.

Abstract
Polistes dominulus are social wasps which are the host of the strepsipteran endoparasite Xenos vesparum. In the hibernating phase, unparasitized and parasitized wasps leave natal nests and aggregate together in sheltered quarters. In aggregations, wasps are socially active, and some individuals perform helping behaviour. Here we investigated if castrated parasitized wasps perform worker tasks in mixed aggregations. Moreover, by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry, we examined the cuticular hydrocarbons of unparasitized and parasitized wasps to evaluate if the infection alters the composition of cuticular waxes that are recognition cues in social insects. In clusters, infected females do not perform helping behaviour and they are less active than unparasitized wasps. Cuticular hydrocarbons are slightly differentiated between unparasitized and parasitized wasps but, generally, unparasitized wasps are more similar to wasps infected by Xenos females compared to wasps infected by Xenos males. Wasps infected by Xenos males do not usually survive the winter. This chemical similarity is probably a consequence of the similar physiological condition of unparasitized and female-affected Polistes wasps. At this stage, it is difficult to affirm whether these modifications are a true parasite manipulation or a consequence of infection.

Abstract
Caffeine, the most widely consumed psychostimulant drug, acutely stimulates motor behaviour and enhances dopamine agonists actions whilst chronically it induces tolerance to either caffeine- or dopamine agonist-induced motor activating effects. The present study examined whether subchronic caffeine administration (15 mg/kg, on alternate days for 14 days) induces enduring modifications in caffeine- and amphetamine-mediated motor activity. To this end, motor activation and rotational behaviour stimulated by either caffeine or D-amphetamine (0.5, 2 mg/kg), given 3 days after the last caffeine administration, were evaluated in neurologically intact and unilaterally 6-hydroxydopamine-lesioned rats respectively. Subchronic caffeine resulted in an increase in caffeine-induced motor and turning behaviour. Furthermore, caffeine pretreatment potentiated the motor effects of amphetamine in both intact and 6-hydroxydopamine-lesioned rats. These results suggest that subchronic caffeine treatment results in an enhancement of its motor stimulant effects, rather than in tolerance, and induces neuroadaptive facilitatory changes in dopamine transmission.

Abstract
Olive oil production, one of the main agro-industries in Mediterranean countries, generates significant amounts of olive mill wastewaters (OMWs), which represent a serious environmental problem, because of their high organic load, the acidic pH and the presence of recalcitrant and toxic substances such as phenolic and lipidic compounds (up to several grams per litre). In Italy, traditional disposal on the soil is the most common way to discharge OMWs. This work is aimed at investigating the efficiency and feasibility of AOPs and biological processes for OMW treatment. Trials have been carried out on wastewaters taken from one of the largest three-phase mills of Italy, located in Quarrata (Tuscany), as well as on synthetic solutions. Ozone and Fenton's reagents applied both on OMWs and on phenolic synthetic solutions guaranteed polyphenol removal efficiency up to 95%. Aerobic biological treatment was performed in a batch reactor filled with raw OMWs (pH = 4.5, T = 30 degrees C) without biomass inoculum. A biomass rich of fungi, developed after about 30 days, was able to biodegrade phenolic compounds reaching a removal efficiency of 70%. Pretreatment of OMWs by means of oxidation increased their biological treatability.

Abstract
Vitamin A and its derivatives, retinoids, are involved in the regulation of gene expression by binding two nuclear receptor families, retinoic acid receptors and retinoid X receptors. Retinoid receptors are highly expressed in the striatum, revealing an involvement of this system in the control of movement as demonstrated by previous observations in knockout mice. To further assess the role of retinoids in adult striatal function, the present study investigated the effect of vitamin A deprivation on rat motor activity and coordination, the rate of synthesis and release of dopamine, the functioning of D1 and D2 receptors and their expression in the striatum. Moreover, the content of acetylcholine in the striatum was measured. Results show that 24 weeks of postnatal vitamin A deprivation induced severe locomotor deficits and impaired motor coordination. Vitamin A deprivation rats showed a significant hyperactivity following D1 receptor stimulation by R(+)-6-chloro-7,8-dihydroxy-1-phenyil-2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-1H-3-benzazepine or amphetamine and reduced catalepsy in response to haloperidol treatment. This different response to the above drugs is not due to a change in striatal DA release or synthesis between vitamin A deprivation and control animals. In situ hybridization experiments showed identical level of expression for the D1 and D2 receptor transcripts. On the other hand, the striatal tissue content of acetylcholine was reduced significantly by about 30% starting from the initial manifestation of motor deficits. We suggest that the locomotor impairment could be imputable to the dysfunction in striatal cholinergic interneurons. Our results stress the basic role of vitamin A in the maintenance of basal ganglia motor function in the adult rat brain.
