Abstract
BACKGROUND Accident and emergency (A&E) doctors are often the first to assess dental and dento-alveolar injuries. Early diagnosis and appropriate management is essential for a good long-term prognosis of restored dental aesthetics and function. OBJECTIVE To evaluate A&E doctors' knowledge of the management of dental injuries, and appropriate onward referral. DESIGN AND SETTING A cross-sectional survey using a questionnaire sent to A&E doctors of all grades at all nine A&E hospitals in South Wales over a consecutive five-month period. METHOD Data relating to the level of knowledge of emergency management of dental trauma were analysed. The relationship between doctor's level of experience and previous training received on the management of common dento-alveolar trauma was considered. Data were analysed for Pearson correlation coefficients. RESULTS The response rate to the questionnaire was 72% (n = 118). There was a negligible correlation between the career grade of the doctors and their knowledge of the management of dental injuries (r = 0.128, p < 0.001). A strong positive linear correlation (r = 0.928, p < 0.001) was found between those with prior training and their knowledge of dental injury management. CONCLUSIONS The findings from this study suggest that A&E doctors have only partial knowledge of the management of dental injuries, though appropriate training can significantly increase knowledge.

Abstract
Biofilm formation can lead to various consequences in the food processing line such as contamination and equipment breakdowns. Since formation of biofilm can occur in various conditions; this study was carried out using L. monocytogenes ATCC 19112 and its biofilm formation ability tested under various concentrations of sodium chloride and temperatures. Cultures of L. monocytogenes ATCC 19112 were placed in 96-well microtitre plate containing concentration of sodium chloride from 1–10% (w/v) and incubated at different temperature of 4 °C, 30 °C and 45 °C for up to 60 h. Absorbance reading of crystal violet staining showed the density of biofilm formed in the 96-well microtitre plates was significantly higher when incubated in 4 °C. The formation of biofilm also occurs at a faster rate at 4 °C and higher optical density (OD 570 nm) was observed at 45 °C. This shows that storage under formation of biofilm that may lead to a higher contamination along the processing line in the food industry. Formation of biofilm was found to be more dependent on temperature compared to sodium chloride stress.

Abstract
The pig (Sus scrofa) mitochondrial genome was targeted to design short (15-30 nucleotides) DNA markers that would be suitable for biosensor-based hybridization detection of target DNA. Short DNA markers are reported to survive harsh conditions in which longer ones are degraded into smaller fragments. The whole swine mitochondrial-genome was in silico digested with AluI restriction enzyme. Among 66 AluI fragments, five were selected as potential markers because of their convenient lengths, high degree of interspecies polymorphism and intraspecies conservatism. These were confirmed by NCBI blast analysis and ClustalW alignment analysis with 11 different meat-providing animal and fish species. Finally, we integrated a tetramethyl rhodamine-labeled 18-nucleotide AluI fragment into a 3-nm diameter citrate-tannate coated gold nanoparticle to develop a swine-specific hybrid nanobioprobe for the determination of pork adulteration in 2.5-h autoclaved pork-beef binary mixtures. This hybrid probe detected as low as 1% pork in deliberately contaminated autoclaved pork-beef binary mixtures and no cross-species detection was recorded, demonstrating the feasibility of this type of probe for biosensor-based detection of pork adulteration of halal and kosher foods.

Abstract
Consumption of probiotics has been associated with decreased risk of colon cancer and reported to have antimutagenic/ anti-carcinogenic properties. One possible mechanism for this effect involves physical binding of the mutagenic compounds, such as heterocyclic amines (HCAs), to the bacteria. Therefore, the objective of this study was to examine the binding capacity of bifidobacterial strains of human origin on mutagenic heterocyclic amines which are suspected to play a role in human cancers. In vitro binding of the mutagens Trp-p-2, IQ, MeIQx, 7,8DiMeIQx and PhIP by three bacterial strains in two media of different pH was analysed using high performance liquid chromatography. Bifidobacterium pseudocatenulatum G4 showed the highest decrease in the total HCAs content, followed by Bifidobacterium longum, and Escherichia coli. pH affects binding capacity; the highest binding was obtained at pH 6.8. Gram-positive tested strains were found to be consistently more effective than the gram-negative strain. There were significant decreases in the amount of HCAs in the presence of different cell concentrations of B. pseudocatenulatum G4; the highest decrease was detected at the concentration of 10(10) cfu/ml. The results showed that HCAs were able to bind with all bacterial strains tested in vitro, thus it may be possible to decrease their absorption by human intestine and increase their elimination via faeces.

Abstract
Primary thyroid lymphoma (PTL) is a rare form of thyroid cancer that is known to be associated with Hashimoto thyroiditis. This association is supported by the presence of elevated titres of both antithyroglobulin and antimicrosomal antibodies in up to 95 percent of patients with PTL. Most patients with PTL present with a rapidly enlarging neck mass and compressive symptoms. The majority of thyroid cancer patients have normal levels of thyroid hormones; they are rarely hyperthyroid, with no obvious clinical features of thyrotoxicosis. We describe a patient who presented with minimal clinical features of thyrotoxicosis despite having markedly elevated serum free thyroxine and suppressed serum thyroid-stimulating hormone levels.

Abstract
We used 40 ± 5 nm gold nanoparticles (GNPs) as colorimetric sensor to visually detect swine-specific conserved sequence and nucleotide mismatch in PCR-amplified and non-amplified mitochondrial DNA mixtures to authenticate species. Colloidal GNPs changed color from pinkish-red to gray-purple in 2 mM PBS. Visually observed results were clearly reflected by the dramatic reduction of surface plasmon resonance peak at 530 nm and the appearance of new features in the 620-800 nm regions in their absorption spectra. The particles were stabilized against salt-induced aggregation upon the adsorption of single-stranded DNA. The PCR products, without any additional processing, were hybridized with a 17-base probe prior to exposure to GNPs. At a critical annealing temperature (55 °C) that differentiated matched and mismatched base pairing, the probe was hybridized to pig PCR product and dehybridized from the deer product. The dehybridized probe stuck to GNPs to prevent them from salt-induced aggregation and retained their characteristic red color. Hybridization of a 27-nucleotide probe to swine mitochondrial DNA identified them in pork-venison, pork-shad and venison-shad binary admixtures, eliminating the need of PCR amplification. Thus the assay was applied to authenticate species both in PCR-amplified and non-amplified heterogeneous biological samples. The results were determined visually and validated by absorption spectroscopy. The entire assay (hybridization plus visual detection) was performed in less than 10 min. The LOD (for genomic DNA) of the assay was 6 µg ml(-1) swine DNA in mixed meat samples. We believe the assay can be applied for species assignment in food analysis, mismatch detection in genetic screening and homology studies between closely related species.

Abstract
Primary hyperparathyroidism due to ectopic parathyroid adenomas can pose diagnostic and management challenges, especially when imaging studies have localised the lesions to different sites. We report a case of symptomatic hypercalcaemia due to a mediastinal parathyroid adenoma. Ultrasonography identified a nodule posterior to the right thyroid gland. However, computed tomography and technetium-99m sestamibi scintigraphy revealed an ectopic parathyroid adenoma located in the anterior mediastinum. The adenoma was successfully removed through a median sternotomy. However, postoperatively, the patient developed prolonged symptomatic hypocalcaemia, possibly due to suppression of the normal parathyroid gland function, although the presence of concomitant hungry bone syndrome was possible. The histopathology of the mediastinal mass was consistent with a parathyroid adenoma.

Abstract
Detailed adsorption experiments of Cd from aqueous solution on NiO were conducted under batch process with different concentrations of Cd, time and temperature of the suspension. The solution pH is found to play a decisive role in the metal ions precipitation, surface dissolution and adsorption of metal ions onto the NiO. Preliminary adsorption experiments show that the selectivity of NiO towards different divalent metal ions follows the trend Pb>Zn>Co>Cd, which is related to their first hydrolysis equilibrium constant. The exchange between the proton from the NiO surface and the metal from solution is responsible for the adsorption. The cation/exchange mechanism essentially remains the same for Pb, Zn, Co and Cd ions. The sorption of Cd on NiO particles is described by the modified Langmuir adsorption isotherms. The isosteric heat of adsorption (ΔH) indicates the endothermic nature of the cation exchange process. Spectroscopic analyses provide evidence that Cd is chemisorbed onto the surface of NiO.

Abstract
Conditionally replicating adenoviruses (CRAds) represent a promising modality for the treatment of neoplastic diseases, including Prostate Cancer. Selectively replicating viruses can be generated by placing a tissue or cancer-specific promoter upstream of one or more of the viral genes required for replication (for example, E1A, E1B). We have previously reported multiple cellular processes that can attenuate viral replication, which in turn compromises viral oncolysis and tumor kill. In this study, we investigated the importance of the cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor p21/Waf-1, on viral replication and tumor growth. To our knowledge, this is the first report describing the importance of p21/Waf-1shRNA on the induction of an androgen responsive element (ARE) based promoter driving the E1A gene. As a proof of concept, the study emphasizes the use of RNA interference technology to overcome promoter weaknesses for tissue-specific oncolytic viruses, as well as the cellular inhibitor pathways on viral life cycle. Using RNA interference against p21/Waf-1, we were able to show an increase in viral replication and viral oncolysis of prostate cancer cells. Similarly, CRAd viruses that carry p21/Waf-1 shRNA (Ad5-RV004.21) were able to prevent tumor outgrowth that resulted in a marked increase in the mean survival time of tumor-bearing mice compared with CRAd without p21/Waf-1 shRNA (Ad5-RV004). In studies combining Ad5-RV004.21 with Adriamycin, a suprar-additive effect was observed only in CRAds that harbor shRNA against p21/Waf-1. Taken together, these findings of enhanced viral replication in prostate cancer cells by using RNA interference against the cdk inhibitor p21/Waf-1 have significant implications in the development of prostate-specific CRAd therapies.

Abstract
Batch adsorption technique was used to study the adsorption of cobalt on NiO. The aim of this work was to examine the effect of pH, concentration and temperature on the ion exchange removal of Co2+ from aqueous solution by the NiO surface. We used Langmuir model to interpret the adsorption data. The Kurbatov-type plots were tested to determine the adsorption mechanism. The kinetics of Co2+ adsorption on NiO was best described by film diffusion model. A well-known thermodynamic equation was used to assess the enthalpy and entropy of the system. The thermodynamic data were indicative of the spontaneous nature of the endothermic sorption process of Co2+ onto the NiO.

Abstract
This paper reports NiO as a novel and an efficient adsorbent for the removal of Pb from aqueous solutions. In the present investigation, Pb adsorption experiments on NiO were conducted on aqueous solution at different initial Pb concentration, pH of the solution and adsorption temperature. The mechanism of adsorption was observed to be an ion exchange between the surface proton and Pb in aqueous solution. Experimental data were best described by the Langmuir isotherms. The surface structure of the NiO before and after adsorption of Pb was analyzed by using FTIR spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with energy dispersive X-ray analyses (EDX).

Abstract
A series of exploratory investigations with multiple agents was carried out in normal rats and in rats with uranyl nitrate-induced acute renal failure to understand the disposition characteristics of intravenous topotecan (TPT) used as a model substrate. The disposition of TPT was unaltered in normal rats when treated with methotrexate, whereas treatment with probenecid increased the systemic exposure of TPT. In case of uranyl nitrate-induced acute renal failure (UN-ARF) rats, the systemic exposure of TPT was increased when compared with normal rats, whereas in UN-ARF rats treated with probenecid a further reduction in renal clearance of TPT was noted as compared with that of UN-ARF induced rats. Thus, TPT may be involved in the tubular secretory pathway when a passive glomerular filtration pathway for elimination was not possible. The disposition of TPT did not normalize in UN-ARF rats when treated with caffeine, a non-selective adenosine A1 receptor antagonist, whereas the selective adenosine A1 receptor antagonist (1,3-dipropyl-8-phenylxanthine, DPPX) normalized TPT pharmacokinetic disposition by improving renal function. Renal excretion studies demonstrated that CLR improved by almost fivefold following DPPX treatment in ARF rats. In addition, the qualitative stability/metabolism pattern of TPT in liver microsomes prepared from various groups of rats (normal rats, UN-ARF rats, rats treated with DPPX, and UN-ARF rats treated with DPPX) was found to be similar. In summary, using a pharmacokinetic tool as a surrogate, it has been shown that the pharmacokinetic disposition of TPT improved considerably upon treatment with DPPX, a selective adenosine A1 antagonist.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE It was reported that some effects of pentoxifylline (PTX) are mediated by heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) induction. We investigated the role of HO-1 in anti-inflammatory activity of PTX. METHODS Experiments were performed in human and murine monocytes and endothelial cells and in HO-1 deficient mice. RESULTS PTX dose-dependently decreased expression of HO-1 in cell lines studied. As expected, PTX reduced also production of TNF. This effect was independent of HO-1 activity, as demonstrated in cells treated with HO-1 activators and inhibitors or in cells overexpressing HO-1. Moreover, inhibition of TNF was the same in human endothelial cells of different HO-1 genotypes, showing that PTX is similarly efficient in carriers of more and less active HO-1 promoter variants. In mice, PTX did not influence HO-1 expression, as measured in liver, kidney, spleen, heart, and skin. Accordingly, the response of PTX treated animals to LPS was the same in wild type and HO-1 deficient mice. PTX to a similar extent increased influx of leukocyte into peritoneal cavity, decreased production of TNF and reduced expression of VCAM-1 in vascular intima. CONCLUSION PTX inhibits production of TNF and may decrease inflammatory reaction both in vitro and in vivo, but these effects are independent of HO-1.

Abstract
The need to isolate efficient heavy metal reducers for cost effective bioremediation strategy have resulted in the isolation of a potent molybdenum-reducing bacterium. The isolate was tentatively identified as Serratia sp. strain DRY5 based on the Biolog GN carbon utilization profiles and partial 16S rDNA molecular phylogeny. Strain DRY5 produced 2.3 times the amount of Mo-blue than S. marcescens strain Dr.Y6, 23 times more than E. coli K12 and 7 times more than E. cloacae strain 48. Strain DRY5 required 37 degrees C and pH 7.0 for optimum molybdenum reduction. Carbon sources such as sucrose, maltose, glucose and glycerol, supported cellular growth and molybdate reduction after 24 hr of static incubation. The most optimum carbon source that supported reduction was sucrose at 1.0% (w/v). Ammonium sulphate, ammonium chloride, glutamic acid, cysteine, and valine supported growth and molybdate reduction with ammonium sulphate as the optimum nitrogen source at 0. 2% (w/v). Molybdate reduction was optimally supported by 30 mM molybdate. The optimum concentration of phosphate for molybdate reduction was 5 mM when molybdate concentration was fixed at 30 mM and molybdate reduction was totally inhibited at 100 mM phosphate. Mo-blue produced by this strain shows a unique characteristic absorption profile with a maximum peak at 865 nm and a shoulder at 700 nm, Dialysis tubing experiment showed that 95.42% of Mo-blue was found in the dialysis tubing suggesting that the molybdate reduction seen in this bacterium was catalyzed by enzyme(s). The characteristics of isolate DRY5 suggest that it would be useful in the bioremediation ofmolybdenum-containing waste.

Abstract
Chromium (III) sorption on a weakly macroporous cation exchanger Amberlite IRC-50 (Na) is studied as a function of time and temperature. The rate constant values for chromium (III) sorption are calculated both for film and particle diffusion processes. The temperature is found to have a positive effect on both the diffusional processes. The high values of energy of activation confirm the particle diffusional nature of the process. The pH changes in the system show a competition between the Cr(OH)(2+) and H(+) ions for the exchange sites of the adsorbent. Equilibrium data are explained with the help of Langmuir equation. Various thermodynamic parameters (DeltaH degrees , DeltaS degrees and DeltaG degrees) from chromium (III) exchange on the resin are calculated.

Abstract
Selective androgen receptor modulators (SARMs) are essentially prostate sparing androgens, which provide therapeutic potential in osteoporosis, male hormone replacement, and muscle wasting. Herein we report crystal structures of the androgen receptor (AR) ligand-binding domain (LBD) complexed to a series of potent synthetic nonsteroidal SARMs with a substituted pendant arene referred to as the B-ring. We found that hydrophilic B-ring para-substituted analogs exhibit an additional region of hydrogen bonding not seen with steroidal compounds and that multiple halogen substitutions affect the B-ring conformation and aromatic interactions with Trp741. This information elucidates interactions important for high AR binding affinity and provides new insight for structure-based drug design.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Heatstroke is a serious condition and clinical studies indicate that vascular stroke increases with excessive consumption of alcohol (ethanol). It was our objective to test the influence of ethanol on cerebral perfusion at normal and higher temperatures. METHODS Recording of isometric tension in rabbit carotid artery strips in organ baths with different concentrations of ethanol at 37 degrees C and during hyperthermia (39-43 degrees C) and scintigraphic cerebral imaging of a radioactive isotope in the control situation and during hyperthermia. RESULTS Stepwise heating induced reproducible reversible graded contraction, proportional to temperature. At high concentrations (toxic levels), ethanol induced an increase in tension and heating potentiated these responses. Extracellular Mg(2+) potentiated both heat-induced contraction and ethanol-induced contraction while extracellular Ca(2+) had no effect on these responses. During hyperthermia and ethanol scintigraphic isotope uptake was reduced in cortical and cerebellar regions. CONCLUSIONS Carotid artery vasomotor tone is temperature dependent and heating induces vasoconstriction. Alcohol (ethanol) at 37 degrees C elicited carotid artery contraction at high concentrations (toxic levels) but at any concentration during elevated temperature (39-43 degrees C). Ethanol potentiated the effect of hyperthermia-induced vasoconstriction and reduced cerebral perfusion as shown by radionuclide imaging. The synergistic effect of ethanol and hyperthermia may induce heat stroke and brain damage.

Abstract
Vanadium is listed on the United States Environment Protection Agency (USEPA) candidate contaminant list # 2 (CCL2), and regulatory guidelines for vanadium exist in some US states. The USEPA requires treatability studies before making regulatory decisions on CCL2 contaminants. Previous studies have examined vanadium adsorption onto some metal hydroxides but not onto commercially available adsorbents. This paper briefly summarizes known vanadium occurrence in North American groundwater and assesses vanadium removal by three commercially available metal oxide adsorbents with different mineralogies. GTO (Dow) is TiO2 based and E-33 (Seven Trents) and GFH (US Filter) are iron based. Preliminary vanadate adsorption kinetics onto GFH, E-33 and GTO has been studied and the homogenous surface diffusion model (HSDM) is used to describe the adsorption kinetics data. The effects of pH, vanadium concentration, and volume/mass ratio are assessed. Vanadium adsorption decreases with increasing pH, with maximum adsorption capacities achieved in at pH 3-4. Results indicate that all adsorbents remove vanadium; GFH has the highest adsorption capacity, followed by GTO and E-33. Data are best fit with the Langmuir model rather than Freundlich isotherms. Both the sorption maxima (Xm) and binding energy constant (b) follow the trend GFH>GTO>E-33. Naturally occurring vanadium is also removed from Arizona ground water in rapid small-scale column tests (RSSCTs). Metal oxide adsorption technologies currently used for arsenic removal may also remove vanadium but not always with the same effectiveness.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Tissue factor (TF) plays a central role during disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) in sepsis. We hypothesized that a frequent D/I polymorphism, at nucleotide position -1208 in the promoter region, could influence TF-mRNA and downstream coagulation. METHODS Basal- and lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced TF-mRNA expression, microparticle-associated TF-procoagulant activity and coagulation were determined in healthy men (n = 74) before and after endotoxin (LPS) infusion (2 ng kg(-1)). Basal values of TF-mRNA ranged between 34 and > 37.5 cycles. RESULTS Baseline TF-mRNA levels significantly differed between genotypes: I/I carriers had almost 2-fold higher TF-mRNA levels compared to D/D carriers at baseline (P < 0.01). In accordance, higher levels of microparticle-associated TF-procoagulant activity could be seen in I/I carriers. However, the genotype did not affect basal or LPS-induced levels of prothrombin fragment F1+2, D-dimer or cytokines including tumor necrosis factor and interleukin-6. CONCLUSION The TF-1208 polymorphism is functional in that it regulates basal TF-mRNA in circulating monocytes and circulating microparticle-associated TF-procoagulant activity in vivo, but does not influence the relative increase in TF-mRNA or coagulation activation during low-grade endotoxemia.

Abstract
1. Cooling has been shown to induce contractions of several smooth muscles in vitro. However, the mechanism involved in the response is not yet known. In the present study, we investigated the possible involvement of transient receptor potential (TRP) cation channel TRPM8 receptors and the Rho-kinase pathway in cooling-induced contraction of the rat fundus. 2. Cooling-induced contractions were inversely proportional to temperature. Contractions were significantly reduced (by 65.6 +/- 2.4%; P < 0.05) in a Ca2+-free (1 mmol/L EGTA) medium, but were not significantly inhibited by nifedipine (10(-6) mol/L). 3. Capsazepine (3 x 10(-6) and 3 x 10(-5) mol/L), a TRPM8 receptor antagonist, inhibited cooling-induced contraction of the rat gastric fundus. 4. The Rho-kinase inhibitor Y-27632 concentration-dependently inhibited cooling-induced contraction of the gastric fundus, producing approximately 90% inhibition at a concentration of 10(-5) mol/L. Contractions were also inhibited by genistein (3 x 10(-5) mol/L), a tyrosine kinase inhibitor, but not by GF 109203X (10(-7) mol/L), a protein kinase C inhibitor. 5. Using reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction techniques, it was observed that the mRNA for the TRPM8 receptor and Rho-kinase were expressed in the rat gastric fundus. 6. These results would suggest that cooling-induced contraction of the rat fundus is mediated by activation of TRPM8 receptors via a mechanism involving activation of Rho-kinase.

Abstract
The possibility of liver involvement in Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia is still controversial. This study investigated 33 adult patients with serologically confirmed M. pneumoniae community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) (median age 31 years) and 38 patients with bacteraemic Streptococcus pneumoniae CAP (median age 54 years), all without pre-existing liver disease. Serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels were elevated in 12 (36.4%) patients with M. pneumoniae CAP (median 53.5 U/L), and in four (10.5%) patients with S. pneumoniae CAP (median 61 U/L) (p 0.025). In most patients with M. pneumoniae CAP, the elevated ALT levels decreased during macrolide therapy, although this decrease was not significant.

Abstract
The chromium(III) phosphate was observed to have a high affinity towards Pb2+ ion and the sorption capacities were found to be in the order: Pb2+ > Cu2+ > Cd2+ > Ni2+. Different characterization methods i.e. FTIR, SEM and EDX were employed to investigate the sorption mechanism of Pb2+ by chromium(III) phosphate, which showed that no new solid phases were present in the residue after sorption of Pb2+. The exchange between protons from the surface and Pb2+ from solutions was found to be responsible for Pb2+ sorption by chromium (III) phosphate.

Abstract
The divalent metal ion sorption (Cu(2+), Cd(2+), Ni(2+), and Pb(2+)) on chromium phosphate (CrPO(4)) was studied as a function of pH, temperature, and concentration of metal ions. The sorption of metal ions is observed to increase with the increase in pH, temperature, and concentration of metal ions in solution. The mechanism of sorption is found to be the exchange of the hydrolyzed metal cations with the protons from solid at high temperature. The sorption at low temperature is found to be accompanied by the precipitation of the corresponding metal phosphates such as Pb(3)(PO(4))(2).

Abstract
The sorption behaviour of phosphate on strong basic anion exchanger, Amberlite IRA-400 (SO4(2-) form) is studied as a function of pH (3-11) at two different initial concentration ranges (0.161 - 0.807 mmol l(-1), 3.874 - 6.134 mmol l(-1)) at 25 degrees C. The stiochiometry of the exchange reactions is observed to be dependent upon concentration and pH of the solutions. It is suggested that the sorption of phosphate takes place initially as PO4(3-) followed by HPO4(2-)/H2PO4(-). The data obtained is explained with the help of a modified Langmuir and mass law action equations.

Abstract
Xanthate ions sorption on copper ore (chalcopyrite) is studied as a function of temperature (273-293 K) in the pH range (8-11). The sorption of xanthate ions at all the pH values is observed to increase with the increase in temperature. The changes in pH, dissolution studies of the ore, SO2(4)- concentration determinations, and FTIR studies were employed to probe the mechanism of the process of adsorption. The results are found to fit successfully to the linear form of the Freundlich equation. The isosteric heats of adsorption (DeltaHi) are also calculated and show that the adsorption of xanthate on copper ore under the given experimental condition is endothermic in nature. The values of DeltaHi found are in conformity with the ion exchange sorption of xanthate by the chalcopyrite.

Abstract
Iron oxide (Fe2O3) was identified and characterized by surface area, X-ray diffractometry, and FTIR analyses. Surface charge densities, point of zero charge (PZC), and surface ionization constants were determined from the potentiometric titration data in various aqueous and aqueous organic mixed solvents in the temperature range 293-313 K. The surface charge densities were observed to decrease with the increase in temperature and concentration of metal ions in both the aqueous and aqueous organic mixed solvents. The absolute values of the surface charge density were found to change in the order aqueous > aqueous/methanol > aqueous/ethanol. Further, the PZC of the iron oxide was observed to shift to the higher pH values in the order ethanol > methanol > aqueous solution, which indicated a decrease in the acidity of the surface -OH groups. The pKa1 and pKa2 values of iron oxide were also determined and then used for determination of the surface potential (psi0) of the solid in aqueous and aqueous organic mixed solvents. The surface potential-surface charge curves generally supplemented the results derived from psi0-pH curves.

Abstract
The ion exchange sorption of phosphate on Fe(OH)3 is studied as a function of temperature (25-55 degrees C) and concentration (1.49-3.23 mmol l(-1)). The mechanism of sorption is observed to be the exchange of OH- anions from the adsorbent surface by those of H2PO4- and HPO4(2-) from the aqueous solution. An equation developed in the Langmuir formalism is used to explain the ion exchange sorption of phosphate on Fe(OH)3. The isosteric heat of sorption illustrates that the uptake of phosphate on Fe(OH)3 takes place through an anion exchange process, involving both the phosphate anions H2PO4- and HPO4(2-). Further, at higher temperature the solid prefers the HPO4(2-) anions forming a binuclear bridging complex.

Abstract
Sorption of Ni2+ ions by AlPO4 is studied as a function of concentrations and temperature at pH 7. Potentiometric titration, dissolution and FTIR studies are employed to determine the mechanism of the process of the uptake of Ni2+ ions which is found to be both the ion exchange and the surface precipitation of the corresponding metal phosphates. Freundlich equation is found applicable to the sorption data, and is employed to evaluate the thermodynamic parameters deltaH(o) and deltatS(o).
