Abstract
The role of oxygen radicals in the metabolism of cyclosporine A (CyA), FR900506 (FK-506) and carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) catalyzed by the cytochrome P450 system was investigated in vitro in rat and human microsomal preparations. Varying concentrations of CyA, FK-506 and CCl4 (100 microM-1.0 mM) were added to microsomal preparations, and lipid peroxidation was measured by malondialdehyde (MDA) formation as detected by the thiobarbituric acid assay. The effects of oxygen radical scavengers [superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT)] and an antioxidant [glutathione (GLUT)] were tested on various incubations of CyA, FK-506 and CCl4 to assess the role of oxygen radicals in lipid peroxidation. CyA-dependent MDA formation was moderately inhibited by SOD in the rat model and increased by SOD in the human model. In both models, CAT slightly inhibited CyA-dependent MDA formation and GLUT significantly inhibited MDA formation. FK-506-dependent MDA formation, studied only in the rat model, paralleled CyA-induced MDA formation but showed greater inhibition with CAT and less inhibition with SOD or GLUT. In both models, CCl4-dependent MDA formation was significantly inhibited by GLUT and showed no sensitivity to SOD or CAT. In addition, the adrenochrome reaction, which measures the oxidation of epinephrine to adrenochrome, was used to measure the increased oxygen radical-flux resulting from the metabolism of CyA, FK-506 and CCl4. CyA with epinephrine showed the highest oxidative activity, followed by FK-506 and then CCl4, which showed the least formation of adrenochrome. These results indicated a role for oxygen radicals in CyA and FK-506 metabolism.

Abstract
To assess the influence of maternal malnutrition on the mode of delivery and asphyxia neonatorum, a cross sectional survey of 615 women in the age group of 20-28 yrs at the time of delivery was done. Women with chronic ailments and complicated pregnancies were excluded. The mothers were then classified into three groups based on Weight Height Product Index (WHPI) namely well nourished (WN), moderately malnourished (MMN) and severely malnourished (SMN). The proportion of asphyxiated babies among the three groups did not differ (P greater than 0.05). Abnormal deliveries like caesarean section were more common among SMN group compared to WN group ((P less than 0.01). No such difference was made out between MMN and WN groups (P greater than 0.05).

Abstract
This study was done with the objective to measure, monitor, and document the potency of oral polio vaccine and the storage conditions in the city of Madras for a period of one year from May 88. The Corporation of Madras which takes care of indenting and supplying the vaccine has 87 centers for storage and distribution. We took 12 samples a month from these centers by stratified random sampling technique adopting proportionate sampling. The samples were coded and sent to the laboratory. The investigator noted the storage conditions in a specially designed data card. Results were notified to the managers concerned. 122 samples were tested out of which 28 (23%) showed loss of potency (less than log 10(5.84]. The loss of potency is statistically significant in centers not having dial thermometer and where inappropriate carrier was used for transport of vaccine. It was least in Maternity and Child Health Centers probably due to the orientation of the personnel. The frequency of loss of potency was more in the beginning of the study and decreased as the study progressed. Monitoring of storage conditions and potency of vaccine along with periodic training and reorientation of health personnel are stressed.

Abstract
The objective of the study was to compare the effectiveness of measles vaccine by seroconversion in vaccinated children with non-vaccinated children of 6 to 8 months age group in a city slum community so as to study the feasibility of advancing the age of immunization. Live attenuated lyophilized Schwartz strain of measles vaccine was used. Hemagglutination inhibition (HI) antibody was estimated. Seroconversion was defined as either the conversion of negative to positive or a two fold rise in titre. One hundred and thirty two children completed the study. There was no difference in the age, sex and nutritional status between vaccinated and non-vaccinated groups (p greater than 0.7). The seroconversion rate in the vaccinated group was 65% and in the non-vaccinated group was 26%. The age, sex and nutritional status did not significantly affect the seroconversion. Our data suggest that immunization with measles vaccine may be effective as early as 6 months of age. Immunization at 6 months may be needed at least for children in densely populated areas like cities and towns.

Abstract
Upto 35% of infants aged between 6 and 11 months are infected with measles in India with its associated high morbidity and mortality. The objective of the study is to know the waning pattern of placentally transmitted antibodies (PTA) for measles so that the age at which children are likely to become susceptible to measles infection could be identified. A cross-sectional serological survey of children aged 3 to 11 months in one of the Integrated Child Development Service (ICDS) area in Madras city slums was done. Venous blood from 376 children was collected and was tested for Hemagglutination Inhibition (HI) antibodies by standard microtitration technique. Titre greater than or equal to 1:8 has been considered as protective. The proportion of children with immune level and the Geometric Mean Titre (GMT), declined to the least by 5 months which denotes that most of the infants become susceptible to measles infection from as early as 5 months of age. There is no significant difference in the waning pattern between different age groups, sex and nutritional status. A community study for effectiveness of measles vaccine at 6-8 months of age is needed to know the feasibility of immunization earlier than 9 months of age.

Abstract
Chronic cigarette use is common in persons who habitually use other cardioactive agents that have been causally associated with heart disease. This study was undertaken to determine if cigarette use intensifies the abnormalities of myocardial function and composition observed in experimental alcoholism over an 18-month period. Young adult male beagles with tracheostomy were divided into four groups. There were 10 controls (group 1); 9 smoked seven cigarettes per day (group 2); 7 were fed ethanol as 20% of calories (group 3), and 6 received both ethanol and cigarettes (group 4). After a period of 18 months, left ventricular function was assessed under anesthesia. Heart rate, left ventricular end-diastolic pressures, and volumes (indicator dilution) did not differ in the four groups. An index of contractility derived by normalizing peak dP/dt for pre- and afterload was reduced significantly below the level of 2.41 +/- 0.7 cm/s in controls to 1.41 +/- 0.35 in group 2, 1.19 +/- 0.38 in group 3, and 1.28 +/- 0.17 in the ethanol cigarette group (each p less than 0.002). Arterial pressures were moderately elevated above group 1 in all three experimental groups without evidence of left ventricular hypertrophy. In contrast to smoking, which elicited no abnormalities of myocardial cation composition, ethanol reduced myocardial potassium and sodium in group 3 without a gain of water content. In group 4, no further decline of tissue cations was observed. Thus, cigarette use when combined with ethanol over a relatively long period produced no greater myocardial abnormalities than ethanol alone and may not be essential to the genesis of cardiomyopathy in alcoholics.

Abstract
Cardiomyopathy in alcoholics is considered to be associated with a low incidence of hepatic cirrhosis. To evaluate cardiac hemodynamics in alcoholic liver disease, left ventricular function in 37 patients with hepatic cirrhosis (group II) was compared with that in 13 normal subjects (group I) matched for age, sex and cardiac size. These groups were contrasted with group III, comprising 32 alcoholics without cirrhosis who had cardiac symptoms but no cardiomegaly or heart failure. Patients with cirrhosis as a group did not differ from normal subjects (group I) in terms of left ventricular filling pressure and cardiac muscle and pump function (cardiac index). However, subgroup IIA (n = 21) had a stroke index significantly less than normal, while subgroup IIB had a significantly increased stroke index and myocardial cardial contractility with a diminished systemic arterial resistance. Similar hepatic abnormalities were present in both subgroups. In group III, left ventricular end-diastolic and aortic mean pressures were significantly elevated compared with values in normal subjects, while cardiac index and indexes of ventricular contraction and relaxation were abnormal. Further examination of patients with cirrhosis indicated that the responses to volume or pressure increments in terms of the level of stroke work for a given filling pressure were most abnormal in group IIA, approximating those of group III. Thus, although overt cardiomyopathy is infrequent in patients with cirrhosis, asymptomatic myocardial disease may assume clinical importance during volume or pressure overload.

Abstract
The pressure-volume relation at end-systole is reportedly altered by changes in contractility. To explore the potential of this ratio in man 185 subjects including 23 normals (Group I) were studied. In 35 patients of Group II (16 with mitral stenosis, 7 with atrial septal defect, and 12 with cor pulmonale) ESP/ESV like an index of contractility measuring force-velocity-length rela tionship (Cy Ix) was insignificantly different from Group I (ESP/ESV and Cy Ix in I = 1.73 ± .31 mmHg/sec, 1.46 ± .09 cm/sec/cm vs 1.44 ± .10, 1.31 ± .05 in II respectively.) With significantly reduced Cy Ix (1.03 ± .04, P<0.00001) ESP/ ESV was likewise reduced (1.16 ± .07, P<0.007) in 108 patients with compen sated LV disease (34 with alcoholic cardiomyopathy, 16 coronary artery dis ease, 30 aortic valve disease, 8 hypertension and 16 with other heart muscle disease.) Like the Cy Ix (0.70 ± .05, P<0.001) ESP/ESV was even lower (0.84 ± .13, P<0.05) in 14 patients with decompensated LV (Group IV). It was insensitive to changes in pressure (angiotensin and volume (dextran). However unlike the Cy Ix it did not vary with acute changes in inotropy (exercise and pacing). The correlations between ESP/ESV and ejection fraction and contractility index in the entire series though weak, were significant (r = .50 and .20 respectively, each P<0.006). Exclusion of patients with aortic valve disease and hypertension in the analysis tended to improve the relationship between the contractility and end-systolic pressure-volume parameters. In the latter two subgroups neither the ESV nor the ESP/ESV ratio related to the contractil ity index, both parameters however did correlate significantly with the ejection fraction. These results indicate that end-systolic pressure-volume relations provide useful measures of LV performance in man, though not expressing the contractility either in all patients or under all situations.

Abstract
Bleeding, thrombocytopenia, and osteopenia are recognized as the side effects of heparin administration. We recently noted occurrence of pulmonary edema in a patient with myelofibrosis with myeloid metaplasia being treated with heparin for pulmonary embolism. The hypertensive episodes preceding left ventricular failure were considered related to serotonin released from the immunologically mediated lowering of platelets.

Abstract
The rate of left ventricular (LV) pressure fall (dP/dtmin) is reportedly altered by contractility and LV stress. To explore the possibility that the ratio of dP/dtmin to dicrotic notch pressure (DTES) measures contractility, 243 subjects including 23 normals (group I) were studied. In 35 patients of group II (16 with mitral stenosis, 7 with atrial septal defect, and 12 with cor pulmonale) DTES, as an index of contractility (Cy Ix) measuring force-velocity-length relationship, was insignificantly different from group I (DTES and Cy Ix in group I = 21.6 +/- 0.6 s-1 and 1.34 +/- 0.04 muscle lengths/s/cm and 18.8 +/- 1.8 s-1 and 1.55 +/- 0.24 muscle lengths/s/cm in group II, respectively). With significantly reduced Cy Ix (1.05 +/- 0.04, p less than 0.01), DTES was likewise reduced (19.0 +/- 0.5, p less than 0.01) in 163 patients with compensated LV disease (47 with alcoholic cardiomyopathy, 24 coronary artery disease, 48 valve disease, 10 hypertensives and 34 with other heart muscle diseases). Like the Cy Ix (0.70 +/- 0.05, p less than 0.001), DTES was even lower (13.3 +/- 0.6, p less than 0.001) in 15 patients with decompensated LV (group IV). Like Cy Ix, this ratio changed significantly with acute changes in inotropy (exercise and pacing), but not with preload (dextran infusion). Basal heart rate, preload and afterload did not influence DTES. Furthermore, DTES correlated significantly in all groups and subgroups with two indices of contractility, VCE (velocity of contractile element) at peak isometric stress, and Cy Ix (r = 0.68 and 0.70, respectively, each p less than 0.001) measured in this study. These results indicate that DTES provides a simple, reliable, and useful measure of the contractile state of LV myocardium in man, independent of preload and afterload.

Abstract
Proteolytic enzymes are associated with normal and neoplastic tissues. Therefore protease inhibitors might also be involved in the control of cell function. alpha 1-protease antigen and antitryptic activity have been found in normal and neoplastic human ovarian homogenate. The inhibitor has been localized to ovarian stromal cells or tumor cells by immunoperoxidase staining. The protein was purified to apparent homogeneity as judged by alkaline gel and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) gel electrophoresis. Immunochemical studies revealed antigenic similarity of plasma alpha 1-protease inhibitor by double immunodiffusion and similar mobility on immunoelectrophoresis and two-dimensional electroimmunodiffusion. The molecular weight was similar to that described for plasma alpha 1-protease inhibitor: 60,000 by gel filtration and 53,500 by SDS electrophoresis. Furthermore, the phenotypic pattern as determined by acid starch gel electrophoresis and immunoprecipitation was PiMM, which is the predominant genetic variant in normal plasma alpha 1-protease inhibitor. An inhibitor ws isolated and purified from an ovarian carcinoma that exhibited functional, immunochemical, and physical similarity to the normal ovarian alpha 1-protease inhibitor. alpha 1-protease inhibitor from normal and malignant ovaries competitively inhibited bovine pancreatic trypsin at incubation times of 5 min at 30 degrees C. Inhibition constant (Ki) values were calculated at 0.67 and 0.51 inhibitory units, respectively. The alpha 1-protease inhibitor in malignant cells may be a factor in the control of proliferation in this tissue. Since ovulation is in part a proteolytic event, the alpha 1-protease inhibitor in ovarian cells may play a role in the control of this specialized tissue. Persistance of this protein in malignant ovarian tissue may be a vestige of its differentiated origin.

Abstract
Accumulation of calcium in cardiac cells during catecholamine induced injury is considered a major pathogenetic factor but its mechanism has not been defined. During initiation of injury in an intact canine model, cell sodium was enhanced fourfold in myocardium after a local infusion of epinephrine via the left anterior descending coronary artery for a 60 min period. Tissue calcium was enhanced and a major role for the Na-Ca carrier system is suggested. Regional myocardial function, blood flow and electrocardiogram responses to toxic levels of the catecholamine have been contrasted with ischaemic injury.

To evaluate the influence of glucose infusate administered with insulin and potassium on left ventricular function during 4 h of ischemia, as well as mechanism of action, four groups of intact anesthetized dogs were studied. Acute regional ischemia was induced with a balloon tip catheter in the left anterior descending artery and infusates were begun after 20 min of ischemia. A threefold increase of plasma glucose concentration was associated with improved left ventricular function during ischemia, compared to animals receiving isovolumic saline. There was a significant decline of left ventricular end-diastolic pressure associated with elevation of stroke volume and ejection fraction to control levels, as determined by indicator dilution. In a separate subgroup studied by cineangiography, shortening of the ischemic anterior wall, after an initial decline, was increased in response to glucose but there was no evidence of extension of injury. Ischemic tissue exhibited a smaller gain of water as well as Na+ per gram dry weight as compared to ischemic controls. On precordial electrocardiogram mapping there was a significant decrease in the sigmaST (sum of ST elevation) as well as NST (number of ST segment elevations), but the reduction of R wave amplitude was not different from controls. To further evaluate long-term effects, eight controls and six treated animals underwent myocardial ischemia and were sacrificed after 4 mo. Calculated area and weight of scar, as well as degree of wall thinning, were similar in both groups. The glucose-treated animals had a significant decrease of plasma FFA in contrast to controls which manifested a significant rise. To examine the postulate that the decrease in FFA was important to therapeutic action, a third group was infused with Intralipid (Cutter Laboratories, Inc., Berkeley, Calif.) and heparin, simultaneously with the glucose infusate, to effect an elevation of plasma FFA during ischemia. Changes in myocardial function and electrolyte composition, as well as precordial electrocardiogram mapping, were similar to that of animals receiving glucose alone. Because serum osmolality was increased approximately 40 mosmol during the glucose infusion, the potential role of hyperosmolality was assessed by infusion of 20% mannitol during acute ischemia in a fourth group. After a transient small increase, there was a moderate decline in function by 4 h, suggesting that the response to glucose is not dependent upon extracellular osmolality. Thus, it is concluded that during the initial hours after the onset of myocardial ischemia the glucose infusate improves ventricular performance without evidence of arrhythmia induction or intensification of ischemic injury. Evolution of irreversible necrosis appears to be delayed rather than prevented under the circumstances of this study.

Abstract
Recent epidemiologic studies have suggested that cardiac disease in common in diabetics and may often have a noncoronary basis. To examine the status of the left ventricle, 17 adult-onset diabetics of familial type without hypertension or obesity underwent hemodynamic study and were compared to 9 controls of similar age. Of the 17, 12 subjects had no significant occlusive lesions by coronary angiography. From this group eight without heart failure had a modest, but significant, elevation of left ventricular end-diastolic pressure. End-diastolic and stroke volumes were reduced, but ejection fraction and mean rate of fiber shortening were within normal limits. The left ventricular end-diastolic pressure/volume ratio was significantly higher than controls. Afterload increments effected a significant increase of filling pressure compared to normals without a stroke volume response, consistent with a preclinical cardiomyopathy. Four patients with prior heart failure had similar but more extensive abnormalities. None had local dyskinesia by angiography, and lactate production was not observed during pacing-induced tachycardia. Left ventricular biopsy in two patients without ventricular decompensation showed interstitial collagen deposition with relatively normal muscle cells. These findings suggest a myopathic process without ischemia. Postmortem studies were performed in 11 uncomplicated diabetics. Nine were without significant obstructive disease of the proximal coronary arteries, and the majority succumbed with cardiac failure. On left ventricular sections, none had evident luminal narrowing of the intramural vessels. All nine exhibited periodic acid-Schiff-positive material in the interstitium. Collagen accumulation was present in perivascular loci, between myofibers, or as replacement fibrosis. Multiple samples of left ventricle and septum revealed enhanced triglyceride and cholesterol concentrations, as compared to controls. Thus, a diffuse extravascular abnormality may be a basis for cardiomyopathic features in diabetes.

Abstract
To examine the influence of preexistent diabetes mellitus on left ventricular performance and coronary blood flow responses to acute ischemia, mild normoglycemic diabetes was induced in nine mongrel dogs after three doses of alloxan, (20 mg/kg, iv), at monthly intervals. Hemodynamic measurements and coronary blood flow (85Kr clearance) were obtained before and after the onset of ischemia. This was produced by occlusion of the proximal left anterior descending coronary artery via a balloon-type catheter in nine intact anesthetized diabetic dogs and 10 nondiabetic dogs. During the 1st hour of ischemia in the diabetic group, the end-diastolic pressure rose from 7 +/- 1.1 (mean +/- SE) mm Hg to 23.8 +/- 2.3 without a significant increase of end-diastolic volume. In controls end-diastolic pressure rose from 8.6 +/- 1.1 mm Hg to 15.3 +/- 1.4, and end-diastolic volume was significantly increased, so that the ratio of end-diastolic pressure and volume was significantly higher in the diabetic group (P less than 0.005). Although indices of contractility did not differ, stroke volume and work reductions were significantly greater in diabetics, despite the fact that coronary blood flow was reduced to a similar extent. Size of the ischemic areas appeared comparable as judged by distribution of dye injected distal to the occlusion. Since potassium loss and sodium gain in the inner and outer layers of ischemic tissue did not differ between the two groups, the intensity of ischemia seemed similar. Glycogenolysis was unimpaired in the diabetic ischemic muscle but triglyceride levels remained elevated. Morphologically the diabetic myocardium was characterized by a diffuse accumulation of periodic acid-Schiff-positive glycoprotein in the interstitium, which was thought to limit diastolic filling of the ischemic ventricle and to contribute to the substantial reduction of ventricular performance.

Abstract
The widespread use of ethyl alcohol suggests its potential importance in clinical medicine. There is no proven therapeutic effect in cardiac patients and its role as an etiologic factor in heart disease has been disputed over the years and attributed to coexistent malnutrition. The latter factor, however, has been dissociated from ethanol use in many patients with the cardiomyopathic form of heart failure. Major support for the role of ethanol as a toxic agent when used in large amounts for a prolonged period has been obtained in various species of animals, including the subhuman primate. Abnormalities include depression of ventricular function, and metabolic and morphologic changes that parallel the changes in humans with preclinical malfunction of the heart. While the mechanism of progression to heart failure or arrhythmias is not known, several factors may be associated. These include, particularly in males, the cumulative effects of ethanol alone or after intensified drinking episodes, simultaneous exposure to trace metals in excess, and occasional specific nutritional deficiency or superimposed infection. The low prevalence of clinical nutritional deficiency in patients with alcoholic cardiomyopathy and the infrequency of heart disease in patients with cirrhosis or neuropathy supports the view that the cardiac abnormality is commonly not dependent on malnutrition. Clinical data indicate that the cessation of alcohol intake may reverse the disease or interrupt its progression in many patients. However, the pathogenic process may continue unabated in some patients who become abstinent.

Abstract
The effects of chronic tolbutamide treatment were examined in a diabetic animal model in which abnormal myocardial function and composition have previously been demonstrated. Eight diabetic dogs were given tolbutamide 250 mg/day orally and compared with seven untreated diabetics, five healthy dogs receiving tolbutamide, and eight normal controls. After one year, resting hemodynamic studies in the intact anesthetized state showed that treated diabetic dogs had a significantly higher left ventricular end-diastolic pressure of 12.1+/-1.3 mm Hg associated with normal end-diastolic volume, compared to 6.1+/-0.8 mm Hg in untreated diabetics (P less than 0.01) and 6.3+/-0.5 in normals. Stroke work and ejection fraction were similar to normals. Acute volume expansion revealed a larger rise of left ventricular end-diastolic pressure in treated and untreated diabetics than normals, without a significant stroke volume response in treated diabetics. Enhanced stiffness of myocardium appeared to be related to interstitial accumulation of periodic acid-Schiff staining material, further intensified in treated diabetics by triglyceride accumulation observed on electron microscopy and by chemical analysis. Thus treatment of diabetes with tolbutamide, despite improved glucose tolerance, effected further reduction of left ventricular function and altered morphology of myocardium.

Abstract
Chronic diabetes mellitus can alter left ventricular function independent of vascular effects. On the basis of available morphologic data in human and canine diabetics, alterations of myocardial interstitium may be the basis for this preclinical abnormality. The abnormal function is independent of apparent duration and treatment by diet, insulin, or hypoglycemic agents. It occurs in both sexes and is independent of age. Whether the observed functional abnormality progresses to clinical heart failure may depend on intensification of the underlying pathophysiology of the myocardium or superimposition of complications such as hypertension, obesity, and obstructive disease of the coronary vessels.

Abstract
The effects of chronic smoking upon fibrinogen turnover and other clotting parameters, were studied prospectively in an animal model maintained on a chronic program for a period of 18 months. The animal received the equivalent on a weight basis of 11/2 packs of cigarettes daily, smoked by a human subject with the weight of 70 kg. The obtained results suggested significant enhancement of the coagulation mechanism in the smoking animals developing over the period of observation particularly when combined with high lipid diet.

Abstract
Myocardial cell pH was measured with 5, 5 dimethyl-2, 4-oxazolidinedione (DMO) in intact anesthetized dogs by a transient indicator dilution technique. Bolus injections of labeled DMO, vascular, extracellular and water indicators were made into the left anterior descending coronary artery, and blood samples were collected from the great cardiac vein. The steady state distribution of DMO between cells and plasma was calculated from the mean transit times of the indicator. Normal myocardial cell pH averaged 6.94 and changed by 58% of the concomitant alterations in plasma pH after infusions of acid or alkali. Myocardial ischemia induced by inflation of a balloon tip catheter in the left anterior descending coronary artery resulted in progressive decreases in cell pH to 6.59 by 1 hour. Infusions of sodium carbonate diminished intracellular acidosis. Hemodynamic studies during 4 hours of ischemia with blood pH at 7.55 to 7.60 indicated a significantly reduced left ventricular end-diastolic pressure and increased stroke volume by comparison with findings in animals given infusions of saline solution. Ventriculograms revealed improved wall motion in the ischemic segment after infusion of alkali. Precordial mapping showed a significant reduction in the number of leads with S-T segment elevation as well as in the sum of S-T segment elevations, but R wave amplitudes did not differ from those in control studies. Calculations of extracellular space, tissue water and cation content revealed a reduced gain of cell sodium ion and loss of cell potassium ion during ischemia after alkali treatment. The latter may account for the S-T segment responses, whereas enhanced ventricular performance may be related to reduced competition of hydrogen ion with calcium ion for binding sites on contractile protein.

Abstract
The nature of the cardiovascular risk in cigarette smokers has not been characterized. To compare the relative effects of long-term smoking and nicotine administration on the cardiovascular system, 18 month old beagle littermates were prepared with a permanent tracheostomy. They were classified into three groups: I, seven control dogs; II, nine dogs that smoked seven cigarettes/day; and III, eight dogs that received an equivalent amount of nicotine. After a period of up to 22 months, the animals were catheterized under anesthesia for assessment of left ventricular function and volumes by indicator-dilution technique. Heart rate, stroke volume, left ventricular end-diastolic pressure and volume and intraventricular conduction times did not differ significantly in the three groups. Left ventricular ejection fraction was 44 +/- 3 percent (mean +/- standard error of the mean) in the control group, 35 +/- 3 percent in the dogs that smoked cigarettes (P less than 0.05) and 27 +/- 3 percent in those given nicotine (P less than 0.01) despite similar values for end-diastolic variables in the three groups. The first derivative of left ventricular pressure (dP/dt) normalized for pre- and afterload was 2.4 +/- 0.2 cm/sec -1 in the control group, 1.41 +/- 0.12 in the cigarette-smoking group (P less than 0.005) and 1.34 +/-0.08 in the nicotine group (P less than 0.01). Although mean aortic pressure was significantly elevated in both the smoking (127 +/- mm Hg) and nicotine (127 +/- 10 mm Hg) groups, there was no significant correlation with the contractility indexes. Reduction of afterload to normal levels did not affect the abnormal ventricular performance. Hypertrophy, inflammation and abnormalities of cell ultrastructures were not present, and myocardial lipid and cation composition were normal. Since interstitial fibrosis was evident in both experimental groups, an alteration of elastic elements may be operative. These cardiovascular abnormalities appear to be predominantly dependent on the nicotine of cigarettes.

Solanum laciniatum Aiton treated with Gibberellic acid (GA3), [2-chloroethyl]-trimethyl ammonium chloride (CCC), and their combinations at early and late stages of growth showed that early application of 2000 ppm CCC produced the greatest stem, leaves, and whole plant dry weight, followed by the combination of early application of 1000 ppm CCC and late application of 100 ppm GA3; whereas all GA3 treatments decreased the dry weight production compared with the controls. Regarding the glyco-alkaloids, the highest percentage was obtained from the whole plant by early applications of both strengths of GA3 compared with other treatments or the controls. On the other hand, early application of 1000 ppm CCC and also late application of 50 ppm GA3 when combined with early application of either 1000 ppm or 2000 ppm CCC produced greater alkaloid percentage yields in stem, leaves, and whole plants more than other treatments or the controls. However, early application of 2000 ppm CCC produced the highest content of alkaloids in leaves and whole plants; this was followed by yields from early application of 2000 ppm CCC and 50 ppm GA3; yields from early application of 100 ppm GA3 and 1000 ppm CCC; and yields from early application of 1000 ppm CCC +50 ppm GA3.

Origanum majorana L. treated with either 50 or 100 mg/l of maleic hydrazide (MH), 2.4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid (2.4-D), N-dimethylaminosuccinamic acid (B995), [2-chloroethyl]-trimethyl ammonium chloride (CCC), indol-3-yl-acetic acid (IAA) or gibberellic acid (GA3) in the presence or absence of 25 mg/l kinetin, showed that only 100 mg/l GA3 with or without kinetin was able to increase plant height than all other treatments and the controls. On the other hand, both IAA and GA3 concentrations and 2000 mg/l CCC markedly increased the dry weight of the plants in the absence of kinetin, whereas when kinetin was combined, only IAA in both concentrations increased the dry weight of the whole plants. Concerning essential oil %, the highest yields were obtained using 100 mg/l MH, 50 mg/l 2.4-D and 2000 mg/l CCC for leaves and 100 mg/l MH, 1000 mg/l B995 and 50 mg/l 2.4-D for flowers in the absence of kinetin, whereas in the presence of kinetin, the higher yields of essential oil were obtained by using 1000 mg/l B995 and 25 mg/l 2.4-D for flowers and only 50 mg/l 2.4-D for leaves.

Abstract
Previous studies of the effect of angiotensin on myocardial contractility have yielded conflicting results. Possible reasons for the observed disparities include differences in techniques for measuring contractility, in species (dog, cat, and man), in myocardial state (normal or diseased), in preparation observed (heart-lung, isolated heart, papillary muscle, atrial myocardium, intact heart), and in dosage schedule. Moreover, there are no reported studies in the intact human heart, normal or diseased, in which contractility measurements are based on velocity-force relations. To resolve the conflict, left ventricular myocardial contractility was measured using the same expressions for the force-velocity relationship in all subjects. Studies were performed in five normal human subjects, six patients with cardiomyopathy, eight normal mongrel dogs, and six dogs with ischemic myocardial scarring, before and during angiotensin infusions in dosages producing 15--20-mm Hg increases of aortic diastolic pressure. Contractile element velocity at peak, dP/dt (Vce) and the Frank-Levinson contractility index (CyIx), which normalizes Vce for diastolic fiber length, decreased during angiotensin infusion in all groups. The mean decreases (11 to 19) per cent in Vce, 15 to 23 per cent in CyIx, SEM's 4-5 per cent) were significant (P values ranging from smaller than 0.05 to smaller 0.005) in the normal hearts of dogs and man and in the scarred canine hearts, in which preangiotensin Vce and CyIx were normal. In the cardiomyopathy group, in which contractility was depressed before angiotensin, the drug elicited a further decrease in Vce (mean fall 17 plus or minus 7 per cent, P smaller than 0.1) and CyIx (26 plus or minus 8 per cent, P smaller than 0.02). We conclude that, in the intact organism, with a normal myocardium or a diffuse or segmental myocardial disease, the administration of angiotensin results in a depression of contractility.

Abstract
Confluent left ventricular scar without significant coronary obstruction has been found in alcoholic subjects at autopsy. To evaluate the pathogenesis, 12 patients with chronic alcoholism and severe precordial pain persisting 4-24 hours were observed clinically. Cardiac isoenzymes of lactic dehydrogenase rose in serum. ST segment was elevated in anterior or posterior ECG leads, and abnormal Q waves appeared. Hypertnesion and hypercholesterolemia were present in two (group B) but not in the ten (group A). The latter exhibited no significant obstructive disease, based on coronary angiography in seven survivors and postmortem examination of the remaining three. Clinical evidence, as well as the quantitative assessment of platelets, made arterial thromboembolism an unlikely cause for the symptoms. Neither hemotologic or systemic disease affecting myocardium was present. The morphology of the left ventricle in three autopsies was compared with that of patients with alcoholism who had no cardiac disease, cardiomyopathy, or an asymptomatic scar. All had accumulation of Alcian positive glycoprotein in the interstitium. The patients with cardiac disease also had interstitial fibrosis which was characterized, particularly in the acute infarction group, by concentric periarterial fibrosis. Restriction of coronary vasodilation by this process during periods of high blood flow requirements was postulated as a basis for infarction.

Abstract
Depression of myocardial contractility after ethanol ingestion in man has previously been shown only in patients with heart disease. In the present study, normal subjects, aged 23-30 years, ingested six ounces of 43% alcohol over a two hour period (Group I, 6 subjects) or a one hour period (Group II, 5 subjects). Systolic time intervals were measured every 15 min from simultaneous ECG, phonocardiogram and carotid pulse tracings. Heart rate, total electromechanical systole and left ventricular ejection time (LVET) were not changed at any time from pre-alcohol values and, except for a small (5 mm Hg) and transient change in diastolic pressure in Group II, aortic pressures also were unchanged. However, in Group I, after 60 min, at a blood ethanol of 74 ± 3 mg%, left ventricular depression was manifested by increased pre-ejection period (PEP) from 90 ± 2 to 96 ± 3.1 msec, isovolumic time (IVT) from 44 ± 3.5 to 52 ± 4 (

< .01), and PEP/LVET ratio from 0.299 ± 0.009 to 0.323 ± 0.01 (
P
< .05). Further depression occurred at two hours with blood ethanol at 111 ± 6 mg%. Doubling ingestion rate (Group II) produced reduction of left ventricular performance at 30 min at a blood level of 50 ± 3 mg%. Feeding of isocaloric sucrose in 5 subjects (Group III) as a control produced a decrease in PEP, IVT, and PEP/LVET. Thus, alcohol in nonintoxicating doses elicits a depression of cardiovascular function in normal unhabituated subjects.
