Thermodynamic parameters for adsorption equilibrium of heavy metals and dyes from wastewater with low-cost adsorbents

This note revisits the literature evaluating the thermodynamic parameters of adsorption equilibrium uptakes of heavy metals and dyes from water and wastewater streams using low-cost adsorbents derived from agricultural waste, industrial wastes, inorganic particulates, or some natural products. We highlighted the possible flaws in some adsorption studies when their thermodynamic parameters were assessed, since compensation effects during enthalpy and entropy evaluation were possibly overlooked.

Rheological characteristics of the cationic polyelectrolyte flocculated wastewater sludge

The rheological characteristics of the wastewater sludge were investigated by using a Haake Rheostress RS 75 rheometer. The stress-sweep experiments and the small-amplitude-oscillatory-shearing (SAOS) tests were conducted. The stress-sweep measurements demonstrate that addition of polymer coagulants to sludge samples could significantly influence the corresponding complex shear modulus G*. Furthermore, the SAOS tests indicate that the sludge samples treated with polymer coagulants will form more rigid structures. The original sludge samples mostly show typical viscoelastic liquid-like behavior. However, the solid-like behaviors were always observed in the samples treated with polymers.

Size-dependent anaerobic digestion rates of flocculated activated sludge: role of intrafloc mass transfer resistance

The anaerobic digestion rate for flocculated sludge has been considered to be lower than that of original sludge, particularly in the later stages of digestion; attributed this relatively slower rate to the increased mass transfer resistance for reactants through the large flocs after flocculation. This study confirmed that methane production was retarded by flocculation. The structure of the floc was identified with fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and a confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM) technique. To verify the mass transfer resistance induced by flocculation, microsensors were applied to assess the response of oxygen concentration distribution inside the flocs that are subjected to sudden changes in ambient oxygen levels. Response time for the electrode at a floc's center was five times greater than the response time in original sludge flocs. Although the effective diffusivity of oxygen in the floc increased by 2.3 times after flocculation, the increased size of the flocculated floc was the major contributor to the total mass transfer resistance to oxygen.

Effects of aerobic exercise and obesity phenotype on abdominal fat reduction in response to weight loss

OBJECTIVE

To test the effects on abdominal fat reduction of adding aerobic exercise training to a diet program and obesity phenotype in response to weight loss.

DESIGN

A prospective clinical trial with a 14-week weight-loss intervention design.

SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS

In total, 209 overweight and obese women were assigned to four subgroups depending on type of treatment and the subject's obesity phenotype: diet alone (DA) with intra-abdominal fat (IF) obesity (> or =mean IF area), diet plus exercise (DE) with IF obesity, DA with abdominal subcutaneous fat (ASF) obesity (<mean IF area) and DE with ASF obesity. Abdominal fat areas were evaluated by CT scans, with values adjusted for selected variables.

RESULTS

Values were adjusted for age, menopausal status and change in body weight and total fat mass. The IF reductions were significantly (P<0.0001) greater in subjects with IF obesity phenotype (-45.1 cm2) compared to the ASF obesity phenotype (-22.2 cm2). The ASF reductions were significantly (P<0.001) greater for subjects with ASF obesity (-74.5 cm2) compared to IF obesity (-55.5 cm2). For IF obesity, the IF reduction was significantly (P<0.01) greater in the DE group (-49.3 cm2) than in the DA group (-37.8 cm2).

CONCLUSION

These results suggest that for individuals with IF obesity, the efficacy on reducing IF of adding aerobic exercise training to a diet-alone weight-reduction program is more prominent (-49.3 cm2/-37.8 cm2=1.3 times) compared with DA. Moreover, abdominal fat reduction was found to be modified by obesity phenotype in response to weight loss.

Energy demand in sludge dewatering

This work investigates the energy required to dewater a suspension, i.e., activated sludge dewatered by centrifugation or consolidation. Total energy input to the suspension from the dewatering device, bond strength between adjacent water and solid surface, and intra-cake friction loss were evaluated for original and flocculated sludges. In centrifugal dewatering, most energy input during the initial stage was consumed by overcoming process irreversibility other than intra-cake friction, and, thereby, had a low energy efficiency. To increase centrifuge speed or to flocculate the sludge at optimal flocculant dosage would yield a high-energy input. In the consolidation test, most energy input at the initial stage was consumed in breaking down the bond strength until the moisture content reduced to less than the critical content. During subsequent dewatering stages, friction loss became the dominant source of energy loss. Dewatering sludge with high-energy efficiency is beneficial to optimally operate a dewatering process.

Nitrogen removal from landfill leachate using single or combined processes

The municipal solids waste (MSW) collected at Shanghai includes a high proportion of food waste, which is easily hydrolyzed to generate ammonia-nitrogen in leachate. This study investigated the efficiency of nitrogen removal from landfill leachate employing four different treatment processes. The simulated rainfall and direct leachate recycling produced strong leachate with high ammonia-nitrogen content, and resulted in the removal of only a small amount of nitrogen. Although pretreating the leachate using an aerobic reactor removed some nitrogen, most of which was transformed to biomass because of the high organic loading applied. Using the three-compartment system, which comprises a landfill column with fresh MSW, a column with well-decomposed refuse layer as the methane generator, and a nitrifier, the ammonia-nitrogen was converted into nitrogen gas and hence removed. Experimental results demonstrated the feasibility of adopting the three-compartment system for managing nitrogen in landfill leachate generated from high-nitrogen-content MSW.

Steady-state humic-acid-containing blanket in upflow suspended bed

We investigated the effects of turbidity and concentration of humic acid on the steady-state behavior of the blanket, which was coagulated using polyaluminum chloride (PACl) as coagulant. The three-dimensional solid-flux plot was constructed. Based on fixed PACl dosage, the iso-humic-acid solid-flux surfaces stacked that enveloped the feasible regime for the blanket bed. The steady-state point moved toward low solid flux and low solid fraction regime with decreasing initial raw water turbidity and/or increasing humic-acid concentration. Low water turbidity and high humic-acid concentration yielded a bulky blanket, with the former producing clean, and the latter turbid effluent. The presence of humic acid was thereby harmful to blanket strength, except for the case of low raw water turbidity. An optimal range of humic acid for blanket strength and clarification efficiency existed at 1 mg l(-1). Low level of humic acid is beneficial to blanket development with low-turbidity raw water.

Statistical mechanics of columnar DNA assemblies

Many physical systems can be mapped onto solved or "solvable" models of magnetism. In this work, we have mapped the statistical mechanics of columnar phases of ideally helical rigid DNA--subject to the earlier found unusual, frustrated pair potential (A.A. Kornyshev, S. Leikin, J. Chem. Phys. 107, 3656 (1997))--onto an exotic, unknown variant of the XY model on a fixed or restructurable lattice. Here, the role of the "spin" is played by the azimuthal orientation of the molecules. We have solved this model using a Hartree-Fock approximation, ground-state calculations, and finite-temperature Monte Carlo simulations. We have found peculiar spin order transitions, which may also be accompanied by positional restructuring, from hexagonal to rhombohedric lattices. Some of these have been experimentally observed in dense columnar aggregates. Note that DNA columnar phases are of great interest in biophysical research, not only because they are a useful in vitro tool for the study of DNA condensation, but also since these structures have been detected in living matter. Within the approximations made, our study provides insight into the statistical mechanics of these systems.

Comparison of dewaterability and floc structure of synthetic sludge with activated sludge

This work compared the appearance, dewaterability, floc size, fractal dimensions derived from free-settling test and light-scattering test, and detailed structural information of floc interior including porosity, Sierpinski carpet fractal dimension, and the fractal dimension of the pore boundaries of a synthetic sludge and an activated sludge. The present synthetic sludge could probe the change in filterability and in fractal dimensions extracted from small angle light scattering test and from free-settling test after conditioning, however, failed to reproduce the detailed structural information of sludge flocs. The use of specific synthetic sludge depends on the field of interest. For instance, the present synthetic sludge is not appropriate to simulate the intrafloc transport of solute owing to its incapability to reproduce the detailed floc structure or to its change after conditioning.

Force of a gas bubble on a foreign particle in front of a freezing interface

We monitored the formation and development of a single gas bubble on the surface of a spherical particle of size 1.676 mm under unidirectional freezing and thawing (4.6-5.0 microm/s) and for the first time quantitatively estimated the force exerted on this particle by measuring the deformation of an attached elastic stick. The bubble would nucleate and grow on the particle surface closest to the ice front, while the force curve for a freezing-thawing cycle presented a hysteresis characteristic. This force was much greater than in the case without a bubble, and hence it dominated the engulfment process in the present freezing tests. The bubble force increased with increasing bubble size and was shown to be mainly attributable to the elastic force by the deformed bubble shape. Comments were made on the need to incorporate the role of bubbles in predicting the critical velocity to freeze a suspension with high dissolved gas content.

Acute and chronic disability among U.S. farmers and pesticide applicators: the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS)

The National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) is a multipurpose household survey of the U.S. civilian non-institutionalized population conducted annually since 1957. From 1986 to 1994, over 450,000 U.S. workers, age 18 years and older, participated in a probability sampling of the entire non-institutionalized U.S. population; variables collected included a range of measures of acute and chronic disability. The objective of the present study was to assess predictors of health status, and acute and chronic disability for farmers and pesticide applicators (pesticide-exposed workers) compared to all other U.S. workers using the 1986-1994 NHIS. After adjustment for sample weights and design effects using SUDAAN, several measures of acute and chronic disability and health status were modeled with multiple logistic regression. Farmers (n = 9576) were significantly older compared to all other U.S. workers (n = 453,219) and pesticide applicators (n = 180). Farmers and pesticide applicators had a higher proportion of males, whites, and Hispanics and were less educated. After adjusting for age, gender, race-ethnicity, and education, compared to all other workers, farmers were significantly less likely to report acute and chronic disability and health conditions, while pesticide applicators were more likely to report chronic disability, health conditions, and poor health. Given the cross-sectional nature of the data and the significant job demands of farming, both leading to a relative healthy worker effect, the present results indicate that at any point in time, farmers report less acute and chronic disability, compared to other U.S. workers, whereas pesticide applicators report similar or poorer health.

DNA-DNA interaction beyond the ground state

The electrostatic interaction potential between DNA duplexes in solution is a basis for the statistical mechanics of columnar DNA assemblies. It may also play an important role in recombination of homologous genes. We develop a theory of this interaction that includes thermal torsional fluctuations of DNA using field-theoretical methods and Monte Carlo simulations. The theory extends and rationalizes the earlier suggested variational approach which was developed in the context of a ground state theory of interaction of nonhomologous duplexes. It shows that the heuristic variational theory is equivalent to the Hartree self-consistent field approximation. By comparison of the Hartree approximation with an exact solution based on the QM analogy of path integrals, as well as Monte Carlo simulations, we show that this easily analytically-tractable approximation works very well in most cases. Thermal fluctuations do not remove the ability of DNA molecules to attract each other at favorable azimuthal conformations, neither do they wash out the possibility of electrostatic "snap-shot" recognition of homologous sequences, considered earlier on the basis of ground state calculations. At short distances DNA molecules undergo a "torsional alignment transition," which is first order for nonhomologous DNA and weaker order for homologous sequences.

Effects of rancidity and free fatty acids in choice white grease on growth performance and nutrient digestibility in weanling pigs1

Two experiments were conducted to determine the effects of rancidity and FFA in choice white grease (CWG) on growth performance and nutrient digestibility in nursery pigs. In Exp. 1,150 crossbred pigs (average initial BW of 6.8 kg and average initial age of 21 d) were used. Treatments (as-fed basis) were a corn-soybean meal-based control with no added fat, 6% CWG, and 6% CWG heated at 80 degrees C, with oxygen gas bubbled through it at 849 mL/min for 5, 7, 9, or 11 d. Peroxide value for the CWG increased as oxidative exposure was increased from 0 to 7 d (i.e., peroxide values of 1, 40, and 105 mEq/kg for d 0, 5, and 7, respectively), but decreased to 1 mEq/kg as the hydroperoxides decomposed after 9 and 11 d of oxidation. Pigs fed the control diet (no added fat) had the same (P = 0.91) overall ADG (d 0 to 35) but lower G:F (P < 0.04) than pigs fed diets with added fat. As for the effects of fat quality, ADG (linear effect, P < 0.01) and ADFI (linear effect, P < 0.001) decreased as the fat was made more rancid. However, there were no changes in digestibility of fatty acids as the rancidity of the fat was increased (P = 0.16), suggesting that the negative effects of rancidity were from decreased food intake and not decreased nutrient utilization. In Exp. 2, 125 crossbred pigs (average initial BW of 6.2 kg and average initial age of 21 d) were used to determine the effects of FFA in CWG on the growth performance and nutrient digestibility in nursery pigs. Treatments (as-fed basis) were a corn-soybean meal-based control with no added fat, 6% CWG, and 6% CWG that had been treated with 872, 1,752 or 2,248 lipase units/g of fat. The FFA concentrations in the CWG were increased from 2% with no lipase added to 18, 35, and 53% as lipase additions were increased. Pigs fed the control diet (no added fat) had the same (P = 0.30) overall ADG (d 0 to 33) but lower G:F (P < 0.01) than pigs fed diets with added fat. There were no effects of FFA concentration on ADG (P = 0.18), and ADFI increased (linear effect, P < 0.04) as FFA concentration in the CWG increased. Fatty acid digestibility was not affected (P = 0.17) by FFA in the diet. In conclusion, our data suggest that as fat is oxidized (especially to peroxide values greater than 40 mEq/kg), ADG and ADFI in nursery pigs will decrease; however, FFA concentrations of at least 53% do not adversely affect utilization of CWG in nursery pigs.

Advective flow in a sludge floc

The interior of sludge floc is highly heterogeneous, while the large pores in the floc control the advective flow. This work for the first time numerically details fluid flow and mass transfer processes in pores of activated sludge floc. The dimensionless permeabilities and mass dispersion coefficients were contoured against pore size ratio and the floc Reynolds number. With a pore size less than 20% of the floc size, the commonly adopted homogeneous model overestimates the floc permeability, and pore velocity is less than 2% of the bulk velocity. This is particularly true for flocs with low porosity. Although the convective flux is low, the dispersive mass transfer rate can be much higher than the diffusional rate, attributable to the strong Taylor dispersion effect. The three-dimensional pore structures in waste activated-sludge floc were identified using confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM) images. Large pores were used to numerically estimate the permeability and dispersion coefficient for these pores. The permeability and the dispersion coefficient of the tortuous pores can be one order of magnitude lower than those for the equivalent straight pores. Besides the dispersion effect, the pore tortuosity appeared as the most important geometrical factor retarding the advective flow in the sludge pores. In addition, the small side pores connected to the large pore had only a mild effect on the flow process, and can be neglected in analysis.

Effect of pre-hydrolysis on floc structure

Morphological changes in flocs were elucidated by small-angle light scattering, free settling tests and microscopic observation to determine the effects of pre-hydrolysis (alkaline treatment and ultrasonication) on two sludges--primary raw sludge from the Malabar Sewage Treatment Plant, Sydney (sludge M) and biological sludge collected at the nitrogen removal unit of St Marys Sewage Treatment Plant in Sydney (sludge S). Ultrasonication or alkaline treatment released a marked amount of insoluble organic matter in a soluble form. The latter treatment was more efficient than the former. Meanwhile, the pre-hydrolyzed flocs had more compact structures than the original ones, as shown by their higher free-settling fractal dimension, lower areal porosity and smaller internal pores. In particular, alkaline treatment yielded flocs with more compact interiors than did ultrasonication. Such detailed structural information could not be elicited by monitoring the change in floc size. The greater resistance to mass transfer of the hydrolyzed flocs thus produced does not reduce the efficiency of subsequent digestion, indicating that the surface reaction rate on the solid surface might have dominated since the pre-hydrolysis steps modified the local chemical environment to promote digestion.

Bilevel thresholding of floc images

Frequently encountered problems on bilevel thresholding of floc images include information loss during the image conversion stage, sampling bias owing to spatially inhomogeneous luminous flux over an optical microscope image or among a series of images, thresholding error adopting various algorithms, and resampling errors during three-dimensional reconstruction. Among these steps the choice of thresholding algorithm could yield most of the processing error. Ways to reduce the potential processing errors are discussed.

Effects of dietary electrolyte balance on the chemistry of blood and urine in lactating sows and sow litter performance

One hundred fifty-three sows (average parity of 2.2) were used to determine the effects of dietary electrolyte balance (calculated as mEq/kg of diet for Na + K - Cl) on sows and their litters during lactation. The sows were fed corn-soybean meal-based diets (1.0% lysine, 1.0% valine, 0.95% Ca, and 0.80% P; as-fed basis) starting on d 109 of gestation and throughout the 21-d lactation experiment. Dietary electrolyte balance (dEB) was 0, 100, 200, 350, and 500 mEq/kg (as-fed basis), well above and below the dEB of 185 mEq/kg found in a simple corn-soybean meal-based lactation diet. To achieve the desired dEB, diets had the following: 1) 1.8% HCl (6 N) and 1.06% CaCl2, 2) 1.0% CaCl2, 3) 0.04% NaHCO3, 4) 1.29% NaHCO3, and 5) 2.54% NaHCO3 (as-fed basis). Increasing dEB increased blood pH (linear and quadratic effects, P < 0.001), partial pressure of carbon dioxide (linear effect, P < 0.001), HCO3- concentration (linear and quadratic effects, P < 0.001), and blood base excess (linear and quadratic effects, P < 0.001). However, increased dEB resulted in lower blood concentrations of K (linear and quadratic effects, P < 0.04), Cl (linear and quadratic effects, P < 0.001), and ionized Ca (linear and quadratic effects, P < 0.001). Changing dEB did not affect ADFI; water usage, litter weight gain; sow weight change; sow backfat change; percentages of CP, lactose, and fat in the milk; percentage of sows returning to estrus; days to estrus; and number of pigs born alive in the subsequent litter (P = 0.06). However, piglet survivability to d 10 and overall was greatest with the lower dEB treatments (linear effect, P < 0.05). The pH (linear and quadratic effects, P < 0.001) and colony forming units of total bacteria (linear effect, P < 0.03) in the urine increased as dEB of the diet was increased. In conclusion, dEB had pronounced effects on the physiological status of sows and decreasing dEB below that in a simple corn-soybean meal-based diet decreased bacterial counts in the urine and increased piglet survivability. However, milk composition, sow and litter weights at weaning, and subsequent rebreeding performance of the sows were not affected by dEB.

Structure of conditioned sludge flocs

Free settling tests, small-angle light scattering, microtome-slicing techniques, and confocal laser scanning microscopy were performed to examine how the cationic flocculation or freezing and thawing affected the floc structure. The floc size, internal pore size, mass fractal dimensions determined from free-settling test or small angle light scattering test, aeral porosity, boundary fractal dimension and Sierpinski carpet fractal dimension of pore boundary from 2D slices, and the volume porosity, compactness, and the pores' box-counting fractal dimension from 3D reconstructed image, were estimated and compared. Cationic flocculation would produce large flocs with internal pores of shape resembling a long "tube" with rough surface. Freezing and thawing would produce flocs with internal pores with lower aspect ratio and a smoother boundary.

Bilevel thresholding of sliced image of sludge floc

This work examined the feasibility of employing various thresholding algorithms to determining the optimal bilevel thresholding value for estimating the geometric parameters of sludge flocs from the microtome sliced images and from the confocal laser scanning microscope images. Morphological information extracted from images depends on the bilevel thresholding value. According to the evaluation on the luminescence-inverted images and fractal curves (quadric Koch curve and Sierpinski carpet), Otsu's method yields more stable performance than other histogram-based algorithms and is chosen to obtain the porosity. The maximum convex perimeter method, however, can probe the shapes and spatial distribution of the pores among the biomass granules in real sludge flocs. A combined algorithm is recommended for probing the sludge floc structure.

SEM/EDS evaluation of porcelain adherence to gold-coated cast titanium

The adhesion between titanium and dental porcelain is related to the diffusion of oxygen to the reaction layer formed on cast-titanium surfaces during porcelain firing. The diffusion of oxygen could be suppressed by coating the titanium surface with a thin gold layer. This study characterized the effects of gold coating on titanium-ceramic adhesion. ASTM grade II CP titanium was cast into a MgO-based investment (Selevest CB, Selec). The specimen surfaces were air abraded with 110-microm Al(2)O(3) particles. Gold coating was applied on titanium surfaces by three methods: gold-paste (Deck Gold NF, Degussa-Ney) coating and firing at 800 degrees C for three times, single gold-paste coating and firing followed by sputter coating (40 mA, 500 s), and sputter coating (40 mA, 1000 s). Surfaces only air abraded with Al(2)O(3) particles were used as controls. An ultra-low-fusing dental porcelain (Vita Titankeramik, Vident) was fused on titanium surfaces. Specimen surfaces were characterized by SEM/EDS and XRD. The titanium-ceramic adhesion was evaluated by a biaxial flexure test (N = 8), and area fraction of adherent porcelain (AFAP) was determined by EDS. Numerical results were statistically analyzed by one-way ANOVA and the Student-Newman-Keuls test at alpha = 0.05. SEM fractography showed a substantial amount of porcelains remaining on the gold-sputter-coated titanium surfaces. A new Au(2)Ti phase was found on gold-coated titanium surface after the firing. Significantly higher (p <.05) AFAP values were determined for the gold-sputter-coated specimens compared to the others. No significant differences were found among the other groups and the control. Results suggested that gold coatings used in this study are not effective barriers to completely protect titanium from oxidation during the porcelain firing, and porcelain adherence to cast titanium can be improved by gold-sputter coating used in the present study.

Production of hydrogen and methane from wastewater sludge using anaerobic fermentation

The hydrogen and methane were produced from wastewater sludge using a Clostridium strain. The original sludge and the pre-treated (acidified, sterilized, freeze/thawed, and sonicated) sludges were tested. Some pre-treatment could enhance hydrogen yield, and the other tests could enhance methane yield. Hydrogen yield followed freeze/thawed>acidified>sterilized>original sludge>sonicated; while methane yield followed sonicated>freeze/thawed>sterilized>acidified>original sludge. The production and consumption of acetate correlated closely with the trends in both yields.

Blanket dynamics in upflow suspended bed

A one-dimensional model for the spatio-temporal variation of solids fraction in the blanket considering both the hydrodynamic dispersion and the convection effects was proposed in this study. The model equation was a wave equation whose solution presented shock-wave like characteristic. The model output predicted that the distribution of the solids fraction in the blanket would, firstly, evolve to a uniform distribution at a lower solids fraction. Afterward, the blanket would compact itself to another uniform distribution at a higher solids fraction. Experimental works with synthetic raw water coagulated with PACl suspended in a lab-scale suspended bed confirmed the theoretical predictions. The solids flux plot was constructed with underdosed, optimal and overdosed suspensions. Change in coagulant dose would affect the blanket height and the response time. The solids flux curve was shifted accordingly. The "optimal' operational condition for the upflow suspended bed that produced the lowest effluent turbidity was identified and discussed.

Thermal drying of wastewater sludge with crack formation

We examined in this work the drying characteristics of wastewater sludge. The drying flux of the constant-rate period for sludge cake could be up to 40% higher than that from a sand bed. Owing to the considerable volume shrinkage of cake, cracks would form and develop on the crack surface, which yielded three-dimensional but rather than the one-dimensional cake structure assumed in conventional drying theories. The crack length was fully developed in the first 30 min of drying, while the width of crack increased linearly with time. Using these data the drying flux from the cracks was estimated. Enhanced drying flux was noticeable which depended on the crack shape and the crossflow velocity.

Route to synthesize the sludge management processes

A route for the synthesis of the treatment train of sewage sludge is proposed, and the conceptual design stage is demonstrated, using local sludge as an example.

Reuse of wastewater sludge with marine clay as a new resource of construction aggregates

The disposal of sludge from wastewater treatment presents highly complex problems to any municipality. Most of the sludge disposal methods have varying degrees of environmental impact. Hence, it is necessary to explore potential areas of reuse in order to alleviate sludge disposal problems and to conserve natural resources. Industrial sludge and marine clay are two forms of high-volume wastes. Using these wastes as a resource of raw materials to produce construction aggregates would enable large-scale sludge reuse. The aggregates were produced at various sludge-clay combinations containing 0, 20, 50, 80 and 100% clay contents, respectively. The pelletized aggregates displayed lower particle densities ranged between 1.48 and 2.25 g/cm3, compared to the density of granite at 2.56 g/cm3. Good 28-day concrete compressive strength of 38.5 N/mm2 achieved by the 100% sludge aggregate was comparable to the value of 38.0 N/mm2 achieved of the granite control specimens. The leachate contamination levels from the aggregates after 150 days were found acceptable when used in concrete, indicating insignificant environmental contamination. The heat flow study showed increases in heat flow at the temperatures of 480 degrees C and between 660 degrees C and 900 degrees C, indicating a need for the extension of heating time around these temperatures.

A comparison of ultrasound treatment on primary and secondary sludges

Ultrasound treatment of primary and secondary sludges was conducted to improve the qualities of sludges for the anaerobic digestion. The impacts of different sonication times, sonication densities and solids concentrations on ultrasonication efficiency were examined. The experimental results indicated that the significant reduction in particle size and increase in soluble organics could be achieved, implying that ultrasonication could offer a feasible treatment method to efficiently disintegrate sludge. The greater decrease in particle size and increase in soluble organics of sludge indicated that the secondary sludge has a more remarkable improvement after sonication over the primary sludge. With respects to the extent of disintegration and energy consumption, higher sonication density performed more effectively in terms of specific energy. There exists an optimal solids concentration range for both the sludges for optimum sonication. Within the optimal solids concentration range, efficient sonication can be effected and sludge would be disintegrated efficiently. The ultrasound would be attenuated by scattering and absorption if the solids concentration exceeds the optimal range. It appeared from the study that the mechanical shear forces caused by ultrasonic cavitation could be a key factor for sludge disintegration and collapse of cavitation bubbles could significantly alter the sludge characteristics.

Porosity and interior structure of flocculated activated sludge floc

This work estimated the porosities of activated sludge flocs, cationic polyelectrolyte flocculated, based on free-settling tests, buoyant weight measurements, and confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM) tests. The extent of advective flow was estimated based on bubble-tracking test. The former two measurements suggested a close-to-unity porosity, that is, an extremely void floc interior. Meanwhile, the latter two tests recommended a dense floc interior with a porosity less than 64%. A discrepancy exists between the porosities estimated by various tests. A floc model was proposed based on the understanding that a vast amount of bound water in the floc was regarded as void in buoyant weight measurement, but was impermeable for advective flow. The distribution rather than the mean value of the porosity controls the advective flow. There existed no simple correlation between the porosities measured by different tests.

Anaerobic digestion of polyelectrolyte flocculated waste activated sludge

This work examined how adding one of three polyelectrolyte flocculants (T3052: cationic, T2000: non-ionic, and T1052: anionic) affected the anaerobic digestion of wastewater sludge. Methane production, floc characteristics (morphology and zeta-potential) and process parameters (soluble chemical oxygen demands (SCODs) and reductive potentials) were monitored along the digestion tests. The digestion rates of T2000- and T1052-conditioned sludge resembled that for original sludge. The T3052-flocculated sludge generated methane at a higher rate during the first 6 days of digestion than did the original one. In the following stage, the digestion rate of sludge flocculated with T3052 at dosage exceeding 15 g/kg dried solids declined. For example, at 40 days of digestion the methane production amounts for original, 15 g/kg DS flocculated, and 40 g/kg flocculated sludge were of 136, 105, and 85 g/kg DS, respectively. The role of flocculants could change in different stages of digestion. The dosed polymers had no apparent toxicity to the inoculum used. The changes in SCOD, adenosintriphosphate concentrations, oxidative and reductive potential, and zeta-potentials did not correlate with the noted hindered digestion for T3052-conditioned sludge. Microphotographic observation revealed that the flocs of T3052-conditioned sludge were not only of a large size, but also were resistant to structural deterioration during digestion. Therefore, mass transfer resistance was proposed to account for the hindered digestion efficiency observed for T3052-conditioned sludge.

Hydrogen production from wastewater sludge using a Clostridium strain

Limited data in literature revealed a relatively low hydrogen yield from wastewater sludge, ca. 0.16 mg/g-dried solids, using anaerobic fermentation. We demonstrated in this work a much higher hydrogen yield, around 1.1 mg-H2/g-dried solids using a clostridium strain isolated from the sludge sample. The formed hydrogen would be consumed after passing the peak value at around 30-36 h of fermentation. We examined the effects of employing five different pre-treatments on substrate sludge, but noted no appreciable enhancement in hydrogen yield as commonly expected for methane production. Since a vast amount of organic matters had been released to water after hydrogen fermentation, we externally dosed methanogenic bacteria to the fermented liquor to produce methane. The fermented liquor could produce more methane than the non-fermented sample, indicating that the dosed methanogenic bacteria readily utilized the organic matters derived from the fermentation test.

Hydrodynamic drag force exerted on activated sludge floc at intermediate Reynolds number

We hung the activated sludge flocs on an elastic nylon stick and then subjected it to a uniform water flow and measured its displacement. The hydrodynamic drag force exerted on the floc was subsequently estimated, both for cationic flocculated flocs and for flocculated and then frozen/thawed flocs. A confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM) was employed to probe the interior structure of flocs. Polyelectrolyte flocculation leads to a compact global structure, and hence high drag force exerted on the floc by water. The corresponding C(D)Omega value at Re=12-27 for flocs ranges from 1.58 to 3.61. Fast freezing would little affect the hydrodynamic drag force. Slow freezing, in contrast, considerably consolidated the floc structure and hence presented impermeable sphere-like behavior of the slowly frozen/thawed flocs.

Using filtrate of waste biosolids to effectively produce bio-hydrogen by anaerobic fermentation

Waste biosolids collected from sewage works is a biomass containing a vast amount of polysaccharides and proteins, and thus is considered a potential substrate for producing hydrogen using anaerobic fermentation. This work demonstrated, contrary to the common assumption, that the solids phase in waste activated biosolids presents extra nutrients for anaerobes; it in fact prohibits effective bio-hydrogen production. Using filtrate after removal of solids from biosolids produces more hydrogen than using the whole biosolids, with the former reaching a level an order of magnitude higher than the literature results.

Producing hydrogen from wastewater sludge by Clostridium bifermentans

Excess wastewater sludge collected from the recycling stream of an activated sludge process is biomass that contains large quantities of polysaccharides and proteins. However, relevant literature indicates that the bio-conversion of wastewater sludge to hydrogen is limited and therefore not economically feasible. This work examined the anaerobic digestion of wastewater sludge using a clostridium strain isolated from the sludge as inoculum. A much higher hydrogen yield than presented in the literature was obtained. Also, the effects of five pre-treatments-ultrasonication, acidification, sterilization, freezing/thawing and adding methanogenic inhibitor-on the production of hydrogen were examined. Freezing and thawing and sterilization increased the specific hydrogen yield by 1.5-2.5 times to that of untreated sludge, while adding an inhibitor and ultrasonication reduced the hydrogen yield.

Gravitational sedimentation of flocculated waste activated sludge

The sedimentation characteristics of flocculated wastewater sludge have not been satisfactorily explored using the non-destructive techniques, partially owing to the rather low solid content (ca. 1-2%) commonly noted in the biological sediments. This paper investigated, for the first time, the spatial-temporal gravitational settling characteristics of original and polyelectrolyte flocculated waste activated sludge using Computerized Axial Tomography Scanner. The waste activated sludge possessed a distinct settling characteristic from the kaolin slurries. The waste activated sludges settled more slowly and reached a lower solid fraction in the final sediment than the latter. Flocculation markedly enhanced the settleability of both sludges. Although the maximum achievable solid contents for the kaolin slurries were reduced, flocculation had little effects on the activated sludge. The purely plastic rheological model by Buscall and White (J Chem Soc Faraday Trans 1(83) (1987) 873) interpreted the consolidating sediment data, while the purely elastic model by Tiller and Leu (J. Chin. Inst. Chem. Eng. 11 (1980) 61) described the final equilibrated sediment. Flocculation produced lower yield stress during transient settling, thereby resulting in the more easily consolidated sludge than the original sample. Meanwhile, the flocculated activated sludge was stiffer in the final sediment than in the original sample. The data reported herein are valuable to the theories development for clarifier design and operation.

Observations of blanket characteristics in full-scale floc blanket clarifiers

We monitored the changes in concentrations, zeta potentials, sizes and capillary suction times of the solids flocs in the clarified water from eight floc blanket clarifiers of PingTsan Water Works of Taiwan Water Supply Company with low (< 10 NTU) and high (> 100 NTU) turbidity raw water. For the former, one-stage coagulation-sedimentation treatment was adopted which yielded a rather unstable blanket. Complete washout was noticeable when the PACl dosage was insufficient. On the treatment of high-turbidity raw water, on the other hand, the Works adopted the combined treatment process, that is, the raw water was first coagulated and settled in a pre-sedimentation tank, afterwards, its effluent was coagulated again and clarified in the clarifiers. The resulting flocs could form a networked blanket that was relatively stable to the shock load in raw water turbidity.

Manufacturing artificial aggregates from industrial sludge and marine clay with addition of sodium salt

The potential of converting industrial sludge and dredged marine clay into building and construction materials as an alternative to disposal was investigated in this study. The industrial sludge was mixed with marine clay at various compositions and was shaped into round pellets to be used as concrete aggregates. The pellets were then dried and transferred into a high temperature kiln where they were heated at 1,135 degrees C. The artificial aggregates were more porous then the normal granite aggregate. The occurrence of this condition was suspected to be attributed to two factors, viz. the firing temperature and the amount of sodium in the aggregates. To validate this hypothesis, the aggregates with and without added sodium chloride were fired at temperatures of 1,100 and 1, 200 degrees C. Results showed a reduction in the densities of the aggregates with the addition of sodium chloride and the increase in firing temperature.

Coagulation of humic-kaolin-PACI aggregates

Water treatment residual flocs are fractal-like aggregates made of many initial aggregates. We investigated in this study the coagulation dynamics for the humic-mineral-polyaluminium chloride (PACI) aggregates using small-angle light scattering techniques and the free-settling test. In contrast to reports in the literature, the presence of humic acid did not lead to a loose floc. Not only the time evolution of the coagulation dynamics, but also the final floc characteristics are only mildly affected by the humic acid. However, the strength of the formed floc does decline with humic acid, which leads to a turbid supernatant with high level of organics.

Outcome of salvage total laryngectomy following organ preservation therapy: the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group trial 91-11

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the incidence of morbidity, mortality, and disease control for patients requiring salvage total laryngectomy (TL) following organ preservation therapy.

DESIGN

Patients entered into a 3-arm randomized prospective multi-institutional trial for laryngeal preservation who required TL following initial treatment.

SETTING

The Radiation Therapy Oncology Group 91-11 trial for laryngeal preservation.

PATIENTS

From 1992 to 2000, 517 evaluable patients were randomized to receive chemotherapy followed by radiation therapy (arm 1), concomitant chemotherapy and radiation therapy (arm 2), or radiation therapy alone (arm 3).

RESULTS

Overall, TL was required in 129 patients. The incidence was 28%, 16%, and 31% in arms 1, 2, and 3, respectively (P =.002). Of these, 7 patients (5%) required TL for aspiration or necrosis. Following TL, the incidence of major and minor complications ranged from 52% to 59% and did not differ significantly among the 3 arms. Pharyngocutaneous fistula was lowest in arm 3 (15%) and highest in arm 2 (30%) (P>.05). There was 1 perioperative death. Local-regional control following salvage TL was 74% for arms 1 and 2 and 90% for arm 3. At 24 months, the overall survival was 69% (arm 1), 71% (arm 2), and 76% (arm 3) (P>.73).

CONCLUSIONS

Laryngectomy following organ preservation treatment is associated with acceptable morbidity. Perioperative mortality is low but up to one third of patients will develop a pharyngocutaneous fistula. Local-regional control is excellent for this group of patients. Survival following salvage TL was not influenced by the initial organ preservation treatment.

Multilevel Structure of Sludge Flocs

In this work, the structure of two kaolin sludges and a waste activated sludge are investigated using both light-scattering and free-settling methods. Fractal dimensions estimated by the light-scattering and free-settling techniques (D(S) and D(F) respectively) differ significantly and support the hypothesis that naturally occurring aggregates possess a multilevel structure. A two-level floc structural model comprised of (i) a primary floc (of fractal dimension D(S)) consisting of primary particles and (ii) a secondary floc (of fractal dimension D(F)) consisting of the microflocs is proposed to interpret the experimental findings. The structural changes of sludge flocs before and after cationic flocculation are interpreted using the proposed two-level model.

Advective Flow and Floc Permeability

This work monitored advection flow through a floc by bubble tracking. Close examination of the motion of a swarm of hydrogen bubbles that passed over a free-falling floc allowed the extent of advection flow to be estimated at 53% for the original activated sludge floc, and 12% for the flocculated floc. The interior permeability of the sludge flocs was estimated from this information. The fluid force exerted on the falling floc was also considered.

"Weak" ultrasonic pre-treatment on anaerobic digestion of flocculated activated biosolids

This study examined how "weak" ultrasonic pre-treatment affects anaerobic digestion of waste biosolids, treated with a cationic polyelectrolyte flocculant. In relation to pre-treatment, the term "weak" used refers to the fact that the total ultrasonic energy input to biosolids is insufficient to fully disrupt its floc structure or the cell walls, as described in the literature. Methane production potential, floc characteristics (size, morphology and zeta-potential) and process parameters (chemical oxygen demands and oxidative-reductive potentials) were monitored, as the digestion was tested. The presence of polyelectrolyte flocculants enhanced methane production within 6 days of digestion (phase I), but inhibited the digestion thereafter (phase II). Following pre-treatment by sonication (0.33 W/mL, 20 min), the methane productions of both original and flocculated biosolids significantly increased. The underlying mechanisms of weak ultrasonic pre-treatment are discussed.

Finite element analysis of slow drug release through deformed coating film: effects of morphology and average thickness of coating film

This paper, a continuation of our previous work, is a presentation of the effect of the morphology and the average thickness of the deformed coating films on the slow diffusional release characteristics analyzed numerically under the constraints of the constant volume of the drug matrices and the coating films, if the films have the same average thickness. Increasing the average thickness of the coating films slows down the fractional release and the average release rate of the drug and smoothen the initial burst of the drug, as well as increase the initial lag time. The effect due to deformation of the coating films on these diffusional release characteristics are found to be less significant with the increasing average thickness of the coating films. Interestingly initial lag times are found to be the same for the coated particles having the same smallest thickness but different average thickness of coating films. The effect due to the change in the average thickness of the coating films on the characteristics of the slow controlled-release is discussed to shed light on the design of a better controlled-release device.

Network strength and dewaterability of flocculated activated sludge

Works in literature proposed the use of the rheological properties of wastewater sludges as an index for conditioner assessment and control. We demonstrated in this work, on the contrary, that one could not justify the consistency of the commonly used rheological characteristics of the sewage sludge samples taken from the same site but at different dates. A physically relevant index was proposed instead for describing the total network strength, which was hypothesized to correlate the dewatering efficiency of flocculated sludge. Based on this index, the network of a sludge was demonstrated to be largely destroyed after shearing, while the relaxation in an unbound environment or mild pouring over action could partially reinstall the structure. Moreover, a uniform shear rate field could produce network of greater strength when compared with that conditioned in a stirred tank.

Regional and processor variation in the ileal digestible amino acid content of soybean meals measured in growing swine

To assess differences in soybean meal quality related to region of production, researchers in Illinois, Kansas, North Carolina, The Netherlands, and Ohio collected four soybean meal samples processed locally at least 15 d apart. These samples were assayed for ileal amino acid digestibility by pigs using a common soybean meal and a soy protein concentrate as references, and a low-protein casein diet for determination of endogenous amino acid losses. Digestibility was determined at each university using seven barrows surgically fitted with ileal cannulas in a 7 x 7 Latin square design. The experimental diets contained 17% CP from the test material except for the low-protein casein diet. Animals were fed twice daily, 12 h apart, at a level of 45 g x kg(-0.75) BW for each meal. Following a 5-d adaptation period, ileal digesta were collected for two 12-h periods for 2 d to be used for determination of ileal digestibility. Variation in amino acid digestibility was very small among and within sites and was much smaller than variation in the concentration of amino acids. Among sites, samples from The Netherlands had less total and thus digestible lysine and methionine than the U.S. samples (P < 0.05). The soybean meals tested in this experiment were approximately 4% higher in amino acids than that reported in the NRC (1998). True (standardized) digestibilities, however, were very similar to NRC values except for cysteine and threonine, which were 5 and 3 percentage points lower in this experiment, respectively. In conclusion, soybeans grown in the United States and locally processed into soybean meal were very similar in nutritional composition. Soybean meals produced in The Netherlands were lower in lysine and methionine (P < 0.05) but had a digestibility similar to that produced in the United States.

Batch Gravitational Sedimentation of Slurries

We investigated the batch settling behavior of the kaolin slurry and the UK ball clay slurry at various initial solids fractions (phi(0)s) using a computerized axial tomography scanner (CATSCAN). The spatio-temporal evolutions of solids fractions in the consolidating sediments were continuously monitored. Since the interface between the sediment and the supernatant of the investigated slurries was blurred, an averaging procedure was employed to estimate their null-stress solids fractions (phi(g)s). Besides the rather slow settling for the high-phi(0) slurries, the basic settling characteristics resemble each other regardless of whether phi(0)>phi(g) or vice versa. The above-mentioned experimental data reveal that the investigated slurries are neither purely elastic nor purely plastic in rheological behavior. On contrary to most model works a blurred supernatant-sediment interface makes difficulty in the gel point determination. During initial settling the high-phi(0) slurries clearly exhibit a finite yield stress to resist deformation. That is, the slurries are plastic fluids. However, the network structure in the slurries deteriorates gradually in the subsequent settling stage while the final, equilibrated sediment reveals a continuous distribution in solids fraction. Restated, the final sediment possesses as a purely elastic characteristic. The model parameters of theory by Buscall and White were regressed by the dynamic consolidating sediment data, while those by Tiller and Leu were obtained using the final equilibrated sediment data. Calculations from both models reveal that ball clay slurry is more compressible than is the kaolin slurry. The high-phi(S0) slurry would yield the less compressible sediment.

Correlates of participation and willingness to participate in anti-tobacco activities among 4th-7th graders

The purpose of this study was to identify factors associated with participation and willingness to participate in anti-tobacco community activities in 4-7th grade students. A probability sample was drawn from seven regions in Florida (n = 1219). Telephone interviews assessed socioeconomic status, tobacco use, knowledge, and attitudes, and exposure to anti-tobacco school education and media campaigns. Factors related to both participation and willingness included: parental discussion of tobacco use, exposure to school courses with anti-tobacco curricula and a belief that youth could convince their friends to stop smoking. Additional participation correlates included: parental smoking status and student government activity participation. Additional willingness correlates included: exposure to anti-tobacco television campaigns, liking school, and several tobacco-related knowledge and attitudinal questions. These findings suggest that exposure to community-based tobacco control programs and family discussion of tobacco use is associated with regular participation and/or willingness of youth to participate in anti-tobacco activities.

Using ATP bioluminescence technique for monitoring microbial activity in sludge

This study demonstrates, for the first time, that the presence of suspended solids in waste-activated sludge interferes with adenosine triphosphate (ATP) bioluminescence tests. The sludge subject to acid/alkaline treatment represented the test sample. Without consideration of the effect of solid concentrations, one would erroneously estimate the density levels of heterotrophic bacteria in the sludge using ATP data. A light blockage model was proposed to evaluate the luminescence reading without the interference of suspended solids.

Involvement of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase and mitogen-activated protein kinases in glycine-extended gastrin-induced dissociation and migration of gastric epithelial cells

The various molecular forms of gastrin can act as promoters of proliferation and differentiation in different regions of the gastrointestinal tract. We report a novel stimulatory effect of glycine-extended gastrin(17) only on cell/cell dissociation and cell migration in a non-tumorigenic mouse gastric epithelial cell line (IMGE-5). In contrast, both amidated and glycine-extended gastrin(17) stimulated proliferation of IMGE-5 cells via distinct receptors. Glycine-extended gastrin(17)-induced dissociation preceded migration and was blocked by selective inhibitors of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3-kinase) but did not require mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase activation. Furthermore, glycine-extended gastrin(17) induced a PI3-kinase-mediated tyrosine phosphorylation of the adherens junction protein beta-catenin, partial dissociation of the complex between beta-catenin and the transmembrane protein E-cadherin, and delocalization of beta-catenin into the cytoplasm. Long lasting activation of MAP kinases by glycine-extended gastrin(17) was specifically required for the migratory response, in contrast to the involvement of a rapid and transient MAP kinase activation in the proliferative response to both amidated and glycine-extended gastrin(17). Therefore, the time course of MAP kinase activation appears to be a critical determinant of the biological effects mediated by this pathway. Together with the involvement of PI3-kinase in the dissociation of adherens junctions, long term activation of MAP kinases seems responsible for the selectivity of this novel effect of G(17)-Gly on the adhesion and migration of gastric epithelial cells.

Errors in bound water measurements using centrifugal settling method

Centrifugal settling method (CSM) is commonly used to estimate the bound water content in sludges. The sludge sediment matrix should be purely plastic for accurate measurements to the bound water content. This communication, however, addressed for the first time that, owing to the inhibited elasticity of the sludge matrix, sediment height rebound was commonly observed for the flocculated sludge. Also, different sludges could have distinct elastic responses after centrifugation. There existed no simple correlation to incorporate the elastic rebound of sludge sediment in bound water measurement. The possible errors incorporated into CSM for measuring bound water contents were highlighted.

High-speed sludge freezing

The investigation examined the feasibility of applying a "high-speed freezing technique, using liquid nitrogen freezing, to condition activated sludges and alum sludges. Experimental results indicate that the freezing speed is much faster than that adopted in most previous works on sludge freezing. Although the filterability and settleability of the alum sludge is improved by 3-min liquid nitrogen freezing, no similar improvement is observed for activated sludge. Moreover, curing affects neither sludge after liquid nitrogen freezing, but affects the slow-freezing activated sludge.

Slow release of drug through deformed coating film: effects of morphology and drug diffusivity in the coating film

The effects of the morphology and drug diffusivity in the coating film on the slow release characteristics have been analyzed numerically under the constraint that the volume of the coating film and the drug matrix is maintained constant. Two different systems of coated particles with deformed coating films were studied and their release characteristics compared with those of the coated particles having spherical coating films. The average release rate, fractional release, drug concentration profiles, and the initial burst of drug were found to be strongly influenced by the ratio of drug diffusivity in the coating film to that in the drug matrix D(r) (i.e., dimensionless drug diffusivity in the coating film). Increasing D(r) always increased the release rate, the fractional release, and the initial burst of drug, but reduced the initial lag times of drug release. The effect of shape deformation was very significant in the drug concentration profiles and the initial lag times; in contrast, it was not so substantial on the fractional release and the average release rates. The morphology difference in the deformed systems was also found to affect the release characteristics to different extents. Increasing the degree of the shape deformation, represented by the perturbation parameter epsilon, always reduced the effective surface area for the controlled release of drug. Because of the compensation effects between decreasing surface area and the non-uniform mass flux distribution, even though the heterogeneity of surface mass flux distribution would become more considerable, the effects of increasing shape deformation to the overall release rate would be less than expected unless the coating film was deformed significantly enough. The effect of the shape deformation and the morphology difference become less effective to differentiate the release characteristics with increasing D(r).
