Abstract
It has been shown that procymidone, a dicarboximide fungicide, alters sexual differentiation in vivo and in vitro. The aim of this study was to evaluate the estrogenic activity of this fungicide using the synthesis of vitellogenin (Vtg) in rainbow trout hepatocyte as a biological marker. The cells were treated for 24 h with procymidone 150 microM, using 17beta-estradiol 20 microM as a positive control. The doses were chosen on the basis of cell viability (Neutral Red and MTT tests) and solubility. The results show that procymidone leads to a qualitative and quantitative increase in Vtg synthesis. In Western immonoblots, the 170 and 30 kDa bands, which respectively correspond to the monomeric form of Vtg and posvitine, were brighter in cells treated with procymidone and 17beta-estradiol than those corresponding to the negative controls (cells treated for 24 h with DMSO 0.1% alone); ELISA showed that the cells treated with the fungicide and 17beta-estradiol had a 48 and 76%, respectively, higher Vtg concentration than the negative controls (P<0.01). Western blotting also revealed the induction of HSP27 (27 KDa), which further confirms the estrogenic acitivity of procymidone as it is known that the 3' region of HSP27/28 containing the gene mRNAs is induced by estrogen treatment. Procymidone increased also the production of both HSP70 protein (70 KDa) and free oxygen radicals. This last finding is in agreement with the toxic mechanism of dicarboximide fungicides. It can therefore be presumed that the estrogenic activity of procymidone in primary cultured trout hepatocytes is related to oxidative damage which, as many other studies have shown, can increase the levels of estrogens such as 17beta-estradiol, and thus increase Vtg synthesis

Abstract
Strobilurins are one of the most important classes of agricultural fungicide. Their invention was inspired by a group of fungicidally active natural products. The outstanding benefits they deliver are currently being utilised in a wide range of crops throughout the world. First launched in 1996, the strobilurins now include the world's biggest selling fungicide, azoxystrobin. By 2002 there will be six strobilurin active ingredients commercially available for agricultural use. This review describes in detail the properties of these active ingredients--their synthesis, biochemical mode of action, biokinetics, fungicidal activity, yield and quality benefits, resistance risk and human and environmental safety. It also describes the clear technical differences that exist between these active ingredients, particularly in the areas of fungicidal activity and biokinetics.

Abstract
Pesticide use in Costa Rica is very high and all year round. A high percentage of what is sprayed remains in the environment and in the living organisms around. This situation brings contamination and health problems to people in contact with them. The onset of adverse effects may be in the short or the long term, and symptoms vary widely, from headaches to cancer. Much research in this area has been devoted to acute or chronic effects, and not until recently to the genotoxic effect of pesticides. This study evaluated the genotoxic effect of pesticides used in banana packing activities, using the comet assay (single cell electrophoresis) as the biological marker in lymphocytes. This was a case-control double blind study of 30 exposed women from 15 banana farms and 28 women not occupationally exposed to pesticides from the same geographic area. Results show damage to single stranded DNA after working from 5 to 15 years (R2 = 0.12). In Costa Rica we do not have an historical record of the kind of pesticides used in banana farms, the period of time and for how long were they used. This prevented further analysis concerning dose, frequency of exposure and use of new or old kind of pesticides in the farms in relation to DNA damage. The comet assay is of value in the genetic monitoring of pesticide exposed populations.

Abstract
Mancozeb, an organocarbamate fungicide, was administered to examine the effect on implantation at doses of 18, 24, 30 and 36 mg/kg body weight/d to normal virgin swiss albino mice for 8 days to pregnant mice. The vaginal smear and body weight of the mice were recorded daily and mice were sacrificed on 9th day of pregnancy. There was a complete inhibition of implantation in 36 mg mancozeb treated mice with 100% pre-implantation loss. There was a partial inhibition of implantation in 24 and 30 mg mancozeb treated mice with 53.44 and 90.16% pre-implantation loss respectively. However, implantation was not affected in 18 mg mancozeb treated mice with 4.92% pre-implantation loss when compared to oil treated controls. To study the temporal effect, the effective dose of 36 mg/kg body weight/d mancozeb was administered orally for 3 and 5 days and on day 3 only. There was a complete inhibition of implantation in 5 days treated mice with 100% pre-implantation loss and partial inhibition of implantation of 3 days treated mice with 75% pre-implantation loss. However, implantation was not affected in mice treated on day 3 only with 1.63% pre-implantation loss when compared to control mice. There was a significant decrease in the diestrus phase with the result there was a concomitant increase in the estrus phase and there was a significant decrease in the uterus weight with 24, 30 and 36 mg and for 3 and 5 days with 36 mg mancozeb treatment. Inhibition of implantation by mancozeb may be due to hormonal imbalance or its toxic effects.

Abstract
Occupational exposure to some pesticides, and particularly DBCP and chlordecone, may adversely affect male fertility. However, apart from the therapeutic use of diethylstilbestrol, the threat to human reproduction posed by "endocrine disrupting" environmental contaminants has not been supported by epidemiological evidence thus far. As it concerns other endocrine effects described in experimental animals, only thyroid inhibition following occupational exposure to amitrole and mancozeb has been confirmed in humans. Cancer of the breast, endometrium, ovary, prostate, testis, and thyroid are hormone-dependent, which fostered research on the potential risk associated with occupational and environmental exposure to the so-called endocrine-disrupting pesticides. The most recent studies have ruled out the hypothesis of DDT derivatives as responsible for excess risks of cancer of the reproductive organs. Still, we cannot exclude a role for high level exposure to o,p'-DDE, particularly in post-menopausal ER+ breast cancer. On the other hand, other organochlorine pesticides and triazine herbicides require further investigation for a possible etiologic role in some hormone-dependent cancers.

Abstract
Malachite green (MG), consisting of green crystals with a metallic luster, is highly soluble in water, cytotoxic to various mammalian cells, and may act as a liver tumor promoter. In view of its industrial importance and possible exposure to human beings, MG poses a potential environmental health hazard. We have reported earlier the malignant transformation of Syrian hamster embryo (SHE) cells by MG. In this study, we investigated the effects of MG on flow cytometric cell cycle phase distribution of normal and MG-transformed SHE cells in asynchronous and synchronous cell populations. DNA flow cytometric analysis indicated that culturing cells for 48 hours in a medium containing MG 0.1 microg/mL induced G2/M arrest in normal cells. Malignant-transformed cells showed no such accumulation of cells at the G2/M phase of the cell cycle in response to MG. Synchronization studies indicated that in the control, both in the presence and absence of MG, cells followed a normal cell cycle pattern up to 16 hours. After 16 hours, in the absence of MG, cells continued a normal cell cycle, whereas in the presence of MG they accumulated at the G2/M phase of the cell cycle. This pattern of accumulation of cells at the G2/M checkpoint control was not observed in either untreated or MG-treated transformed cells. We also studied the effects of MG on the induction of apoptosis using flow cytometric FSC/SSC scatter plots in normal and transformed SHE cells. Flow cytometric analysis showed a dose- and time-dependent induction of apoptosis by MG in control cells, whereas induction of apoptosis by MG was marginal in transformed cells. In the present study, we demonstrated the efficient operation of the G2/M checkpoint control, apoptosis in control SHE cells, the abrogation of checkpoint controls, and decreased sensitivity to apoptosis in transformed SHE cells.

Abstract
The existence of a link between hexachlorobenzene (HCB) and porphyria cutanea tarda has been known for a long time. However, the epidemiologic data on effects on health caused by prenatal exposure have not provided convincing evidence that HCB alters porphyrin metabolism. Our objectives were to analyze urinary porphyrin excretion and HCB in maternal serum and fetal cord blood in neonates born in a village (Flix) near a chlorinated solvent factory, to detect possible adverse effects in urinary porphyrin excretion caused by prenatal exposure, and to assess their relationship with HCB blood levels. We conducted a cross-sectional study in the Porphyria Unit at a tertiary care facility in Barcelona, Spain, and the Pediatric Unit of the Móra d'Ebre Hospital, the reference hospital of the study area. We included in the study all neonates (n = 68) born in Móra d'Ebre Hospital 1997-1999 and their mothers. We obtained 68 urine specimens of singleton neonates on the third day after birth to test for urinary porphyrin excretion. We obtained 52 fetal cord blood and 56 maternal serum samples for HCB analysis. Total urinary porphyrins were quantified using spectrofluorometry. Porphyrin profile was determined by HPLC. Serum HCB was analyzed by gas chromatography coupled with electron capture detection. In total population, median HCB levels were 1.08 ng/mL in cord blood and 3.31 ng/mL in maternal serum. Total urinary porphyrin concentration was 37.87 micromol/mol creatinine. Coproporphyrin I and coproporphyrin III were the major porphyrins excreted. We found no positive relationship between urinary porphyrin excretion and HCB levels. However, we observed an association between maternal smoking and coproporphyrin excretion. Although high environmental levels of HCB are reported in the town of Flix, we found no alteration in urinary porphyrin excretion.

Abstract
Two modern fungicides, a strobilurin, azoxystrobin (AZO), and a triazole, epoxiconazole (EPO), applied as foliar spray on spring barley (Hordeum vulgare L. cv. Scarlett) 3 days prior to fumigation with injurious doses of ozone (150-250 ppb; 5 days; 7 h/day) induced a 50-60% protection against ozone injury on leaves. Fungicide treatments of barley plants at growth stage (GS) 32 significantly increased the total leaf soluble protein content. Additionally, activities of the antioxidative enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), ascorbate-peroxidase (APX) and glutathione reductase (GR) were increased by both fungicides at maximal rates of 16, 75, 51 and 144%, respectively. Guiacol-peroxidase (POX) activity was elevated by 50-110% only in AZO treated plants, while this effect was lacking after treatments with EPO. This coincided with elevated levels of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) only in EPO and not in AZO treated plants. The enhancement of the plant antioxidative system by the two fungicides significantly and considerably reduced the level of superoxide (O2*-) in leaves. Fumigation of barley plants for 4 days with non-injurious ozone doses (120-150 ppb, 7 h/day) markedly and immediately stimulated O2*- accumulation in leaves, while H2O2 was increased only after the third day of fumigation. Therefore, O2*- itself or as precursor of even more toxic oxyradicals appears to be more indicative for ozone-induced leaf damage than H2O2. Ozone also induced significant increases in the activity of antioxidant enzymes (SOD, POX and CAT) after 2 days of fumigation in fungicide untreated plants, while after 4 days of fumigation these enzymes declined to a level lower than in unfumigated plants, due to the oxidative degradation of leaf proteins. This is the first report demonstrating the marked enhancement of plant antioxidative enzymes and the enhanced scavenging of potentially harmful O2*- by fungicides as a mechanism of protecting plants against noxious oxidative stress from the environment. The antioxidant effect of modern fungicides widely used in intense cereal production in many countries represents an important factor when evaluating potential air pollution effects in agriculture.

Abstract
Hexachlorobenzene (C(6)Cl(6), HCB) is a chemical that has been associated with significant immediate and long term adverse health effects in humans. It has been associated with both porphyria cutanea tarda and spontaneous abortions among survivors of widespread exposure in the 1950s in southeastern Turkey. HCB binds to the Ah receptor, albeit with lower affinity than dioxin. Dioxin exposure has been reported to lower human secondary sex ratio, putatively through a male mediated effect. We therefore wished to evaluate the impact of the HCB environmental event on the sex ratio of the progeny of the survivors. We undertook an assessment of 1) the effects of HCB exposure on the proportion of male births of individual subjects who had survived, 2) variables that significantly predicted the proportion of males among these individuals, and 3) the trend of the population sex ratio born in Turkey from 1935 to 1990. Women known to have been exposed to HCB in the 1950s did not have offspring with a significantly different sex ratio when compared to control populations. However, subjects reporting exposure at the peak of the episode (1955-57) had a significantly lower lifetime proportion of males than those exposed at a later date. The lifetime reported spontaneous abortion rate of these women also significantly predicted the percent males per subject. The available national data demonstrated a significant reduction in the calculated proportion of males from 1935 to 1970 that stabilized from 1970 to 1990. These data indicate that HCB exposure that was sufficient to induce clinical porphyria cutanea tarda may also have reduced the proportion of males in subjects over their reproductive life-span. The HCB episode does not explain the pattern of the national trend from a population perspective.

Abstract
The authors investigated whether organochlorine exposure is associated with prevalence of otitis media, pneumonia, pertussis, asthma, and increased immunoglobulin E levels in children. Organochlorine concentrations and histories of infection and atopic manifestation were available for 343 children, and immunoglobulin E levels were available for 340 children. The authors applied logistic and linear regressions and controlled for confounders. In general, the prevalence of infections in children was not related to organochlorine exposure. However, for the combined effect of dichlorodiphenyldichloroethene with polychlorinated biphenyls or hexachlorobenzene, a significantly increased relative risk (odds ratios = 3.70 and 2.38, respectively) was found for otitis media. Exposure to dichlorodiphenyldichloroethene resulted in a significantly higher odds ratio for asthma (odds ratio = 3.71; 95% confidence interval = 1.10, 12.56) and in immunoglobulin E concentrations above 200 kU/l (odds ratio = 2.28; 95% confidence interval = 1.20, 4.31). This is the first study in which dichlorodiphenyldichloroethene has been identified as a substantial risk factor for asthma and for increased immunoglobulin E blood levels.

Abstract
The impact of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) has been demonstrated in mammalian models, but less research is available for avian species. The effects of vinclozolin (VIN), an antiandrogenic fungicide, on sexual differentiation and maturation were investigated in Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica). On day 4 of incubation, embryos were exposed to no treatment, oil, or 25, 50, or 100 ppm of VIN. Endpoints measured included adult male reproductive behavior, hypothalamic gonadotropin-releasing hormone I (GnRH-I) content in hatchlings and adults, plasma steroid levels in hatchlings and adults, proctodeal gland growth during maturation, and relative testicular weight at seven weeks of age. Results showed that exposure to VIN significantly (p < 0.05) altered GnRH-I in male hatchlings, whereas GnRH-I levels in females remained unaffected. Although steroid levels were unaltered by any VIN treatment, the display of male reproductive behavior seemed delayed, with the number of mounts and the number of cloacal contacts being significantly (p < 0.05) lower in the VIN-treated males. This could have an extreme negative impact on wild avian species that are routinely exposed to similar EDCs.

Abstract
Segment-specific localization of p-aminohippuric acid accumulation and glutamine synthetase activity along the proximal tubule was investigated in kidneys of rats treated with segment-specific nephrotoxicants such as potassium dichromate (pars convoluta) and hexachloro-1:3-butadiene (pars recta). Potassium dichromate and the highest dose (200 mg/kg b.w.) of hexachloro-1:3-butadiene caused a significant, dose-dependent decrease of p-aminohippuric acid uptake in the renal cortical slices 24 and 48 h after the treatment. In contrast, hexachloro-1:3-butadiene and only the highest dose (40 mg/kg b.w.) of potassium dichromate, caused a significant dose-dependent decrease of glutamine synthetase activity in the kidney beginning 24 h after treatment. Finally, potassium dichromate and the highest dose (200 mg/kg b.w.) of hexachloro-1:3-butadiene (48 h after the treatment) caused a significant dose-dependent loss of kidney protein content. The results suggest that p-aminohippuric acid accumulation is localized in the pars convoluta and confirm that glutamine synthetase is in the pars recta of the rat proximal tubule. p-Aminohippuric acid uptake impairment and glutamine synthetase activity loss caused by the highest doses of hexachloro-1:3-butadiene and potassium dichromate, respectively, suggests that high doses of segment-specific chemicals may involve other portions of the proximal tubule; in addition, the decrease of glutamine synthetase activity caused by potassium dichromate may be related to the protein content loss.

Abstract
The conservation and management of objects of artistic, historic, and cultural significance, along with research on natural history specimens, offer a variety of safety and health risks both common to other professions and unique to the handling and study of collections. Collection objects and specimens may be inherently hazardous due to their natural composition or may contain residual pesticide and preservative chemicals acquired from decades of conservation practices. When assessing exposures, evaluation of risk must consider the intermittent nature of most work duties, the small size of the workforce, and overlapping duties.

Abstract
Among the myriad of recent studies on endocrine-disrupting chemicals, relatively few involve thyroid disruption, and most of these address exposure/disruption during embryonic life. Of those involving adult vertebrates, the endpoints examined are thyroid measurements. Even though thyroid disruption could potentially interfere with energy metabolism and thermoregulation such that over-winter survival might be compromised, the possible energetic consequences of these thyroid perturbations have not been investigated. We assessed thyroid function and measured resting metabolic rates of cotton rats chronically exposed to the fungicides vinclozolin or mancozeb. In addition, we measured norepinephrine-induced nonshivering thermogenesis and cold-induced thermogenesis and then cold-acclimated the mancozeb animals. Although thyroid hormone concentrations generally decreased, this was compensated for by an increase in thyroxine turnover (vinclozolin study only) such that thyroxine utilization rate was not different. In addition, there was no difference between the treated and control animals in any of the metabolic parameters measured. It is concluded that wild rodents exposed to these compounds are not energetically compromised.

Abstract
A 49-year-old man developed a widespread eczematous eruption following contact with plants sprayed with a fungicide. Patch testing revealed a strong reaction to thiuram mix and several of the individual thiuram mix constituents. The fungicide contained tetramethylthiuram disulphide, a thiuram chemical. Thiurams are widely recognized as a cause of rubber-glove allergy; however, they are also used extensively in fungicides.

Abstract
The immediate behavioral responses of goldfish (Carassius auratus) to pesticide-contaminated flows were recorded in a countercurrent olfactometer. In addition, electro-olfactograms were recorded from the epithelial surface of the olfactory rosette as a preliminary check for the olfactory sensitivity of the fish to the pesticides tested. All tests were run on prochloraz (imidazole fungicide), bentazone (diazine herbicide), and nicosulfuron (sulfonylurea herbicide). Behavioral effects were assessed, at four concentrations (10 microg/L, 100 microg/L, 1 mg/L, 10 mg/L), on endpoints related to swimming pattern (preference-avoidance responses, burst swimming reactions), comfort activities (buccal movements, feeding attempts), and social relations (antagonistic acts, grouping). The behavior of the fish appeared particularly sensitive to prochloraz exposure. As a whole, prochloraz-contaminated flows showed significant effects on the six behaviors studied; bentazone and nicosulfuron affected three and five, respectively. At the lowest concentration, prochloraz also showed more effects than the two other pesticides. Some of the behavioral endpoints were found particularly sensitive to a given chemical. Pesticide-contaminated flows also induced significant changes in swimming orientation of the fish. Attraction was observed in response to flowing solutions of prochloraz (1 mg/L, 10 mg/L), bentazone (10 microg/L, 10 mg/L), and nicosulfuron (1 mg/L, 10 mg/L). At a concentration of 1 mg/L, none of the pesticides induced a noticeable depolarization of the olfactory epithelium, suggesting that these chemicals are not detected by the olfactory sense of the fish. These results are discussed in the light of the data concerning effects of pesticides on behavior and chemical communication in fish.

Abstract
The toxicity of pesticides on human reproduction is largely unknown--particularly how mixtures of pesticide products might affect fetal toxicity. The Ontario Farm Family Health Study collected data by questionnaire on the identity and timing of pesticide use on the farm, lifestyle factors, and a complete reproductive history from the farm operator and eligible couples living on the farm. A total of 2,110 women provided information on 3,936 pregnancies, including 395 spontaneous abortions. To explore critical windows of exposure and target sites for toxicity, we examined exposures separately for preconception (3 months before and up to month of conception) and postconception (first trimester) windows and for early (< 12 weeks) and late (12-19 weeks) spontaneous abortions. We observed moderate increases in risk of early abortions for preconception exposures to phenoxy acetic acid herbicides [odds ratio (OR) = 1.5; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.1-2.1], triazines (OR = 1.4; 95% CI, 1.0-2.0), and any herbicide (OR = 1.4; 95% CI, 1.1-1.9). For late abortions, preconception exposure to glyphosate (OR = 1.7; 95% CI, 1.0-2.9), thiocarbamates (OR = 1.8; 95% CI, 1.1-3.0), and the miscellaneous class of pesticides (OR = 1.5; 95% CI, 1.0-2.4) was associated with elevated risks. Postconception exposures were generally associated with late spontaneous abortions. Older maternal age (> 34 years of age) was the strongest risk factor for spontaneous abortions, and we observed several interactions between pesticides in the older age group using Classification and Regression Tree analysis. This study shows that timing of exposure and restricting analyses to more homogeneous endpoints are important in characterizing the reproductive toxicity of pesticides.

Abstract
Mancozeb, a fungicide of ethylenebisdithiocarbamate group was orally administered at doses of 500, 600, 700 and 800 mg/kg body weight/day to normal virgin rats of Wistar strain for 30 days. The vaginal smear and body weight of the rats were recorded daily and rats were sacrificed on 31st day. Estrous cycle was effected by showing a significant decrease in the number of estrous cycle, duration of proestrus, estrus and metestrus with concomitant significant increase in the duration of diestrus in all the mancozeb treated groups when compared with controls. There were a significant decrease in the number of healthy follicles and a significant increase in the number of atretic follicles in all the mancozeb treated groups when compared with controls. The histologic observation of the ovary revealed the presence of less number of corpora lutea and the size of the ovary was also reduced in high doses of mancozeb treated rats. There was a significant increase in the thyroid weight in all the mancozeb treated rats except in 500 mg/kg/d. In rats treated with 500 mg/kg/d showed a significant increase in the level of total lipids in the liver. In rats treated with 600 mg/kg/d mancozeb showed a significant decrease in the levels of glycogen and total lipids in the uterus and total lipids in the liver. In rats treated with 700 mg/kg/d showed a significant decrease in the levels of protein in ovary, glycogen, total lipids, phospholipids and neutral lipids in the uterus and a significant increase in the levels of phospholipids, neutral lipids in the ovary and total lipids, phospholipids and neutral lipids in the liver. In rats treated with 800 mg/kg/d showed a significant decrease in the levels of protein and glycogen in the ovary and protein, glycogen, total lipids, phospholipids and neutral lipids in the uterus and a significant increase in the levels of total lipids, phospholipids and neutral lipids in the ovary and liver when compared with controls. These observed effect of mancozeb on the estrous cycle, follicles and biochemical constituents may be due to imbalance in the hormone or toxic effect.

Abstract
Methods for the determination of 3,4-dichloroaniline (3,4-DCA) and 3,5-dichloroaniline (3,5-DCA) as common markers of eight non-persistent pesticides in human urine are presented. 3,5-DCA is a marker for the exposure to the fungicides vinclozolin, procymidone, iprodione, and chlozolinate. Furthermore the herbicides diuron, linuron, neburon, and propanil are covered using their common marker 3,4-DCA. The urine samples were treated by basic hydrolysis to degrade all pesticides, metabolites, and their conjugates containing the intact moieties completely to the corresponding dichloroanilines. After addition of the internal standard 4-chloro-2-methylaniline, simultaneous steam distillation extraction (SDE) followed by liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) was carried out to produce, concentrate and purify the dichloroaniline moieties. Gas chromatography (GC) with mass spectrometric (MS) and tandem mass spectrometric (MS-MS) detection and also detection with an electron-capture detector (ECD) after derivatisation with heptafluorobutyric anhydride (HFBA) were employed for separation, detection, and identification. Limit of detection of the GC-MS-MS and the GC-ECD methods was 0.03 and 0.05 microg/l, respectively. Absolute recoveries obtained from a urine sample spiked with the internal standard, 3,5-, and 3,4-DCA, ranged from 93 to 103% with 9-18% coefficient of variation. The three detection techniques were compared concerning their performance, expenditure and suitability for their application in human biomonitoring studies. The described procedure has been successfully applied for the determination of 3,4- and 3,5-DCA in the urine of nonoccupationally exposed volunteers. The 3,4-DCA levels in these urine samples ranged between 0.13 and 0.34 microg/g creatinine or 0.11 and 0.56 microg/l, while those for 3,5-DCA were between 0.39 and 3.33 microg/g creatinine or 0.17 and 1.17 microg/l.

Abstract
Recently, hexachlorobenzene (HCB) was proposed for inclusion in the system of toxicity equivalency factors (TEFs) currently used for dioxin-like compounds. In this paper, we explore the practical implications of the proposition to the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) programs by comparing respective health guidance values for 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) and HCB (expressed as total toxicity equivalents [TEQs]), reviewing possible interactions between HCB and dioxin-like chemicals, and by providing information on actual co-existence of HCB and dioxin-like chemicals at hazardous waste sites. We found a good correlation between the TEF-adjusted oral exposure guidance values for HCB and guidance values for TCDD. The combination of HCB and other dioxin-like compounds was not found in soil, air, or water media at hazardous waste sites. Based on this fact, it is not necessary to include HCB in the total TEQ count at hazardous waste sites at this time.

In an experiment, application of different levels of metalaxyl to a sandy loam soil significantly affected the nodulation and nitrogenase activity of mungbean. In both the compost amended and unamended soils, 0.5 mg kg(-1) of metalaxyl enhanced acetylene reduction activity and yield of mungbean, where as higher concentrations (1 mg and 2.5 mg kg(-1) of fungicide) inhibited the nodulation traits as well as economic traits of mungbean.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Arsenic is an ubiquitous natural element. Chronic and low level ingestion or inhalation may result in chronic arsenicism first characterized by skin changes. CASE REPORT A 75 year old man, non-insulin-dependent diabetic, presented a diffuse hyperpigmentation with scattered white spots on the trunk. He complained of asthenia. Clinical diagnosis of chronic arsenicism was confirmed by arsenic determination in urine, plasma and phaneres. Thorough investigations led to discover very high arsenic levels in the own wine of the patient. This was probably the result of a wrong use of sodium arsenite-based fungicide, for cultivating his vine yard. DISCUSSION Chronic arsenicism has become rare but it should always be kept in mind. Clinical presentation, with particular cutaneous features and routes of exposure are reviewed. Treatment is symptomatic. As arsenic is known to be a strong carcinogenic agent, patients with chronic arsenicism have to be followed up during a long time.

Abstract
We have studied the influence of metabolites of chlorinated pesticides (lindane, pentachlorophenol, hexachlorobenzene) on proliferation and differentiation in two stroma-free murine bone marrow culture models, a multipotent progenitor cell line (FDCP-mix) and primary lineage-depleted bone marrow cells. Tetrachlorohydroquinone (Cl(4)pHQ), tetrachloro-p-benzoquinone (Cl(4p)BQ), but not their positional isomers, tetrachlorocatechol (Cl(4)oHQ) and tetrachloro-o-benzoquinone (Cl(4)oBQ), nor 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (2,4,6-Cl(3)P), were much more toxic to FDCP-mix cells cultured under conditions which lead to self-renewal than under conditions which lead to granulocyte-macrophage differentiation. Under the latter conditions, Cl(4)pHQ and Cl(4p)BQ even stimulated growth at intermediate concentration levels. In the primary cell cultures, pronounced differences were observed in the sensitivity between individual developmental pathways and between the different compounds. The percent of cells differentiating into the granulocytic lineage was increased at high concentration levels of each test compound. However, stimulatory effects on the macrophage lineage were observed at intermediate concentration levels of Cl(4)pHQ, Cl(4p)BQ and 2,4,6-Cl(3)P, and differentiation into erythrocytes was stimulated at low concentrations of 2,4,6-Cl(3)P. It is concluded that chlorinated monocyclic pesticides, after biotransformation to quinoid metabolites, may interact directly with haemopoietic progenitor cells with differential effects on self-renewal and differentiation. These mechanisms could lead to myeloplastic disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND An increased risk of exposure to pesticides for pancreatic cancer has been suggested in a number of epidemiologic studies. METHODS Cases (N = 484), aged 30-79 years, were diagnosed in 1986-1989. Controls (N = 2,095) were a random sample of the general population. Information on usual occupation and potential confounding factors was obtained. A job-exposure matrix (JEM) approach was used to estimate the level of occupational exposure to pesticides. RESULTS A significant trend in risk with increasing exposure level of pesticides was observed, with ORs of 1.3 and 1.4 for low and moderate/high exposure levels, respectively. Excess risks were found for occupational exposure to fungicides (OR = 1.5) and herbicides (OR = 1.6) in the moderate/high level after adjustment for potential confounding factors. An increased risk for insecticide exposure was disappeared after adjustment for fungicide and herbicide exposures. Results of our occupation-based analysis were consistent with those from the JEM-based analysis. CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest that pesticides may increase risk of pancreatic cancer, and indicate the need for investigations that can evaluate risk by specific chemical exposures. Abstract
The objective of this study was to determine whether paternal occupational exposure to chlorophenol fungicides and their dioxin contaminants is associated with childhood cancer in the offspring of sawmill workers. We used data from 23,829 British Columbian sawmill workers employed for at least 1 continuous year between 1950 and 1985 in 11 sawmills that used chlorophenates. Probabilistic linkage of the sawmill worker cohort to the provincial marriage and birth files produced an offspring cohort of 19,674 children born at least 1 year after the initiation of employment in the period 1952-1988. We then linked the offspring cohort to the British Columbia Cancer Registry. We included all malignancies in cases younger than 20 years of age that appeared on the cancer registry between 1969 and 1993. We calculated standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) using the British Columbia population as a reference. A nested case-control analysis assessed the effects of paternal cumulative exposure and windows of exposure on the risk of developing cancer in the offspring. We identified 40 cases of cancer during 259,919 person-years of follow-up. The all-cancer SIR was 1.0 [95% confidence interval (CI), 0.7-1.4]; the SIR for leukemia was 1.0 (CI, 0.5-1.8); and the SIR for brain cancer was 1.3 (CI, 0.6-2.5). The nested case-control analysis showed slightly increased risks in the highest categories of chlorophenol exposure, although none was statistically significant. Our analyses provide little evidence to support a relationship between the risk of childhood cancer and paternal occupational exposure to chlorophenate fungicides in British Columbian sawmills.

Abstract
Agricultural workers reentering fields after pesticide application to engage in hand labor activities are subject to potentially significant dermal exposures to residues on foliage and in soil. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidelines for assessment of post-application exposures were originally described in the 1984 Pesticide Assessment Guidelines Subdivision K which is currently undergoing revision. A successor document will eventually appear as Series 875, Group B Postapplication Exposure Monitoring Test Guidelines. Regulatory protocols found in these documents utilize dislodgeable foliar residues, foliage-to-human-transfer coefficients, and duration of activity to estimate exposure. Dermal absorption factors are then used to estimate dose. However, the experiments from which absorption factors are derived typically involve constant or nearly constant exposures which are not consistent with assumed field exposure conditions. This can lead to inconsistent interpretation and questionable dose estimates. An AFL-CIO challenge to procedures used by EPA to estimate the dose of the fungicide captan [N-trichloromethylthio-4-cyclohexene-1,2-dicarboximide] to strawberry harvesters, which elicited a response from EPA, provides a useful opportunity for examination of the derivation and use of absorption factors. An improved, but still relatively simple, method for dermal dose estimation featuring explicit treatment of the time dependence of absorption has been developed. A benefit of the proposed method is capability for consideration of the effect of delay in post-shift washing on dose.

When academics ask such questions, they may sometimes be after practical information, but they may also be using the questioning as an attack on the supposed excessive relativism of social constructionism. Three key analytical moves that offer a useful deconstruction of troublesome health questions are outlined, showing that they are another useful topic of constructionist inquiry. To lessen abstraction, these moves are brought to bear on a case study of a possible connection between pesticide use and birth defects, thus showing how social science and epidemiology can be connected, troubled, and extended in the process.

Abstract
As part of a European Concerted Action on Male Reproduction Capability an exposure assessment survey was conducted among seasonal workers in the fruit growing sector in the Netherlands. Dermal exposure to the fungicides captan and tolylfluanid was measured using cotton gloves (12 persons) and skin pads on several body parts (12 persons). In addition, a set of exposure data was used from a study conducted recently among Dutch fruit growers. For harvesting activities, re-entry time appeared to be an important determinant of dermal exposure to captan and tolyfluanid. Explained variance of regression models was moderate to high (range 0.30-0.87). For captan, calculated half-life times from the most recent exposure survey were lower (glove data: 5 days; pad data: 6 days) compared with half-life times based on the previously conducted study (11 days). Possible explanations for the discrepancy are discussed. For tolylfluanid, estimated half-life times during harvesting were 2 and 3 days, based on pad and glove data, respectively. Prediction of captan exposure during other crop activities appeared to be far more difficult (explained variance equal to 0.06), although the estimated half-life time was comparable with that for harvesting. The data suggest that re-entry time gives useful information to group workers in broad exposure categories. Nonetheless, it was concluded that large studies are needed to evaluate the importance of re-entry time in more detail.

Abstract
Recent legislation in the European Union requires regulators of member states to carry out risk assessments using data for actual or potential operator exposure, or estimates of exposure from models. However, the existing models have few datasets from studies carried out on greenhouse or indoor crops, particularly in southern Europe. In this study potential dermal and inhalatory exposures were measured in two trials in Italian greenhouses. The total potential dermal operator exposure of the applicator, measured with a whole-body passive dosimetry method, was 15.4 and 37.1 mL/h of the diluted pesticide mixture. The majority of the contamination was on the hands and on the lower part of the coverall. Approximately 0. 003% of the active ingredient (ai) applied to the crop area contaminated the coverall worn by the operator. The potential dermal exposure during the mixing and loading phase accounted for 6-8% of the total potential dermal exposure during the whole process. Inhalation exposure accounted for only 0.05-0.07% of the total potential operator exposure. Model predictions of the potential operator exposure using a modified version of the German model overestimate the mixing-loading exposure while underestimating the application exposure. These data are evidence that the estimation coefficient set for hand-held application to ornamental and horticultural crops may be inadequate for the agronomic conditions of southern Europe.

Abstract
The possible interference of hexachlorobenzene and octachlorostyrene (i.e., thermal byproducts from hexachloroethane in aluminum degassing) with porphyrin metabolism was investigated in exposed workers. Urine specimens from 9 male aluminum foundry workers (i.e., smelters) at 6 different companies and from 18 controls-matched for sex, age, residence, and socioeconomic status-were analyzed for total porphyrins and porphyrin isomers. Workers exposed to hexachlorobenzene and octachlorostyrene had a statistically significant increase in urinary total porphyrins, compared with controls (mean +/- standard deviation: 13.63 +/- 11.13 micromol/mol creatinine and 6.24 +/- 3.84 micromol/mol creatinine, respectively; p = .02). The authors attributed the results mainly to differences in excretion of coproporphyrins-notably coproporphyrin III. Erythrocyte uroporphyrinogen decarboxylase activity was similar in both groups. There was a high correlation between levels of hexachlorobenzene and octachlorostyrene, respectively, in plasma and urinary excretion of porphyrins; these findings, however, relied heavily on 1 subject for whom extreme values were obtained. The results indicated that occupational exposure to hexachlorobenzene and octachlorostyrene in aluminum degassing with hexachloroethane may affect porphyrin metabolism in a manner consistent with early secondary coproporphyrinuria-the first recognized step in the development of chronic hepatic porphyria. It was also noted that changes remained detectable some years after exposure ceased.

Abstract
The main objective of the Asclepios program was to examine occupational risk factors for the male reproductive system. The program focused on occupational exposure to fungicides (farmers, greenhouse workers, and vineyard workers), styrene (laminators in the reinforced plastics industry) and inorganic lead (battery workers, foundry workers, and lead smelters). Questionnaire studies of time to pregnancy were combined with longitudinal and cross-sectional studies of semen quality. The 8 data-collecting centers addressed 6553 male workers and contributed time-to-pregnancy values on the 3077 most recent pregnancies. Data collection was by interview or self-collection. The average response rate across all exposures and centers was 69.8%. The Asclepios project is the first international multicenter research project on environmental risks to male reproductive function. A protocol for epidemiologic research on occupational risk factors to the male reproductive system was developed, and links between epidemiologic and experimental units were established. The majority, but not all, of the studies was completed within the given time frame.

Abstract
Earlier studies have provided inconclusive results relating hexachlorobenzene (HCB), an organochlorine fungicide, to female breast cancer risk. The current study, with a total of 304 breast cancer cases and 186 controls recruited in Connecticut between 1994 and 1997, examined the association by directly comparing breast adipose tissue levels of HCB between incident breast cancer cases and noncancer controls. The cases and controls were patients who had breast biopsies or surgery at the Yale-New Haven Hospital (New Haven, CT) and histologically diagnosed either as breast cancer or benign breast disease. Information on major known or suspected risk factors for breast cancer was obtained through in-person interview by trained interviewers. No significant difference in mean breast adipose tissue levels of HCB was observed between breast cancer patients (21.0 ppb) and controls (19.1 ppb) in this large case-control study. The risk also did not vary significantly by menopausal status, estrogen or progesterone receptor status of the breast cancer cases, breast cancer histology, stage of diagnosis, or type of benign breast disease. Among parous women who reported ever breast feeding, an odds ratio (OR) of 0.5 [95% confidence interval (CI), 0.2-1.4] was observed when the highest quartile was compared with the lowest quartile. However, no association was observed among parous women who reported never breast feeding (OR = 0.7; 95% CI, 0.3-1.7 for the fourth quartile). For nulliparous women, the adjusted OR was 2.1 (95% CI, 0.5-8.8) for the third tertile when compared with the lowest based on few subjects. Therefore, our study does not support a positive association between environmental exposure to HCB and risk of breast cancer.

Abstract
The occupational exposure resulting from the application of crop protection agents continues to be of great interest for the purposes of identifying hazards or determining safer chemical handling methods. The purpose of the present study was to identify the potential respirator exposure of a mixer/loader to chlorothalonil, with the mixing and loading operation as the only source of aerosols (particles <13 microm diameter). Three worst-case mixing/loading scenarios were simulated in the lab: (1) a spill of undiluted chlorothalonil formulation onto a dry, horizontal metal surface; (2) a spill of undiluted chlorothalonil formulation onto a rapidly rotating shaft; and (3) pouring undiluted chlorothalonil formulation into a container of water. Aerosol generation from these scenarios was compared to that resulting from atomizing dilute chlorothalonil through hydraulic nozzles. Aerosols were captured with a cascade impactor, and quantified by gas chromatography. Results indicated that simulated spill scenarios generated aerosol concentrations between 2.1 and 5.3 ng/l, which were in the same order of magnitude as, and only marginally higher than, the detection threshold (1.7 ng/l) and background levels (2.2 ng/l). In comparison, atomization of dilute chlorothalonil through a hollow cone and flat fan nozzles resulted in airborne concentrations of 354 and 96 ng/l, respectively, related to the atomization characteristics of these nozzles. Measurement of the dimensions of the aerosol cloud indicated that aerosols resulting from a spill amounted to approximately 10(-5)% of the spilled chlorothalonil. It was estimated that a male worker respiring 29 l/min would inhale approximately 0.32-0.78 ng of chlorothalonil during a typical 30 s spill, assuming a 1% transfer efficiency between the spill site and the mixer/loader. These estimates were between 10000 and 480000 times less than literature data for respiratory exposure of chlorothalonil by applicators and harvesters, suggesting that inhalation of aerosols from mixing and loading represents a minor component of overall exposure.

Abstract
Fungicides include chemicals that are known aneugens. The purpose of the present study was to investigate whether occupational exposure to these and other agricultural pesticides induces aneuploidy in human sperm. The contribution of lifestyle factors (smoking and alcohol consumption) to the frequency of aneuploid sperm was evaluated as well. The effects of age and sperm concentration were analyzed as confounders. Spermatozoa from 30 healthy farmers were studied before and after exposure to fungicides, using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). Ten thousand spermatozoa were scored per semen sample to determine the disomy and diploidy frequencies for chromosomes 1 and 7. Exposure to fungicides was not associated with sperm aneuploidy. Smoking was significantly associated with sperm carrying an extra chromosome 1 and with diploid sperm as well as with the aggregate frequency of aneuploid sperm. Alcohol consumption, sperm concentration, and age showed inconsistent results before and after the season of exposure to fungicides. For low-level exposures, such as occupational exposures, the sensitivity of the sperm-FISH method may not be sufficient. The present study supports earlier ones showing that smoking can increase aneuploidy in human sperm.

Abstract
The aims of the study were to assess the prevalence of and association between occupational dermatitis and possible risk factors in gardeners and greenhouse workers living on Funen, describe the distribution of different types of eczema and detect the allergens most commonly involved. A cross-sectional study, based on a postal questionnaire and subsequent patch testing of selected persons was carried out in 1958 gardeners. The response rate was 84.6%, and among 250 persons patch tested the most frequently sensitizing occupational allergens were plants of the Compositae family and the fungicide captan. Allergic occupational contact dermatitis was suspected in 43 persons (17%). Irritant eczemas outnumbered allergic eczemas and both were most often caused by plants. The lifetime prevalence of occupational dermatitis was 19.6%. Occupational mucosal symptoms, working with Compositae and training as a gardener in females were significantly associated with an increased prevalence of occupational eczema, whereas sex, age and personal atopy seemed to be of less importance.
