Abstract
CASE REPORT We present the case of a seven-year-old male with ocular toxocariasis. The fundus of the eye showed a vitritis, as a result of which the retina could not be seen. Following treatment with systemic corticosteroids the condition evolved favorably. However, due to a papillary and peripheral granuloma that raised the macula, a vitrectomy was performed which stabilized the process. DISCUSSION Ocular toxocariasis is not common in developed countries. The diagnosis is based on funduscopic aspects, serology and IgG positivity of the vitreous. In relation to treatment, as the use of anthelminthics therapy is controversial, the use of corticosteroids and vitrectomy is recommended.

Abstract
The magnetic properties of thin epitaxial layers of Fe grown on Cu(111) depend sensitively on the films' structure and morphology. A combination of experiments and numerical simulations reveals that the use of a surfactant monolayer (ML) of Pb during molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) growth at room temperature reduces the amount of interdiffusion at the Cu-Fe interface, retards the fcc-to-bcc transformation by about 2 ML and substantially increases the films' coercivity. The origin of all these alterations to the magnetic behavior can be traced back to the structural modifications provoked by the surfactant during the early growth stages. These results open the way for the controlled fabrication of custom-designed materials with specific magnetic characteristics.

Abstract
This work investigated the link between the type of treatment and the clinical evolution of lambs suffering from diarrhoea attributed to non-enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli. Two hundred and forty scouring lambs, and 25 healthy lambs selected as control, were used in this trial. The faecal samples from the scouring lambs were positive to non-enterotoxigenic E. coli. All the scouring lambs received supportive care and they were randomly allotted to two groups of 120 animals (treated group and untreated group). The lambs in the treated group were given two daily doses of 20 mg/kg live weight spectinomycin for 3 days, while the other group of lambs (untreated group) did not receive any antibiotic. Serum endotoxin was higher in the treated lambs. The combined infection of E. coli + Proteus mirabilis was the most frequent microbiological result in the deceased treated lambs, while the only enteric pathogen isolated in the untreated lambs submitted to necroscopy was E. coli. The pathological findings most commonly recorded in the untreated lambs were suggestive of a generalized inflammatory process attributed to colibacilosis, while the lesions in the treated lambs might correspond to an enterotoxoemic process. The overproduction of P. mirabilis might be consequence of the antibiotic treatment and it would be the most probable cause of the endotoxemia, the high mortality rate and the pathological findings in the treated lambs. Therefore, a supportive care without antibiotics does not lead to a poorer chance of survival in lambs with diarrhoea attributed to non-enterotoxigenic E. coli.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to characterize the different inhibitor-resistant TEM beta-lactamases, extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) and plasmid-mediated AmpC beta-lactamases implicated in beta-lactam resistance in Proteus mirabilis, which has increased over recent years. METHODS From February 2000 to December 2005, 1423 clinical isolates of P. mirabilis were collected. The AmpC phenotype was checked by means of a double-disc synergy test using cloxacillin as an inhibitor of AmpC enzymes. The production of ESBL was assessed by the double-disc synergy method and by Etest ESBL. Analytical isoelectric focusing, determination of kinetic constants, conjugation, PCR and a sequencing strategy were used to characterize the enzymes. The possible relationships between isolates were analysed by PFGE. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS Twenty-five of 1423 isolates were found to display intermediate or full resistance to co-amoxiclav, cefotaxime or ceftazidime. Seventeen isolates had reduced susceptibility to co-amoxiclav; of these, seven produced TEM-110, eight produced the new TEM-159, one the new TEM-160 and one TEM-1. Five isolates producing TEM-110, TEM-159 or TEM-160 enzymes shared the same PFGE profile. Three isolates produced an ESBL, CTX-M-1, CTX-M-32 and the new variant, VEB-4. Finally, five isolates with an AmpC phenotype produced CMY-2, two with the same PFGE profile. Our data emphasize the diversity of beta-lactamases found in this species.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To report the data of the Home Parenteral Nutrition (HPN) registry of the NADYA-SENPE working group for the year 2006. METHODOLOGY We compiled the data from the on-line registry introduced by the responsible Units for the monitoring of HPN from January 1st to December 31st 2006. RESULTS 103 patients with HPN were registered (47 males and 56 females), belonging to 19 hospitals. Average age for the 91 patients older than 14 years old was 53.3 +/- 14.9 years old, and that for the 12 patients under 14 years old was 2 +/- 0 years old. Most frequent pathology was neoplasm (29%), followed by intestinal motility disorders (13%). The reason for HPN provision was short bowel syndrome (40%), intestinal obstruction (22%), and malabsorption (21%). Tunneled catheters were mostly used (45%), followed by implanted port-catheters (32%). Catheter related infections were the most frequent complications, with a rate of 0.85 episodes / 10(3) days. HPD was provided for more than two years in 50% of the cases. By the end of 2006, 70.9% of the patients remained active; exitus was the most frequent reason to end HPN (53%). Complementary oral or enteral nutrition was provided to 52% of the patients. 48% of the patients had a normal activity level, and a 55% were autonomous. PN formula was supplied by the hospital in 82% of the cases, while this number was 78% for fungible materials. 27% of the patients were eligible for intestinal transplant. CONCLUSIONS We observe an increase in registered patients with respect to previous years, with a very different prevalence among regions. Neoplasia remains as the main pathology since 2003. We observe a decrease in catheter-related infections with respect to the 2004-2005 period.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to obtain transgenic maize expressing the rabies virus glycoprotein (G) of the Vnukovo strain and to evaluate its immunogenicity in mice, by the oral route. The ubiquitin maize promoter fused to the whole coding region of the rabies virus G gene, and a constitutive promoter from cauliflowermosaic virus (CaMV)were used. Maize embryogenic callus were transformed with the above construct by biolistics. Regenerated maize plants were recovered and grown in a greenhouse. The presence of the G gene and its product was detected by PCR and western blot, respectively. The amount of G protein detected in the grains was approximately 1% of the total soluble plant protein. Transformed kernels containing 50 microg of G protein were given once by the oral route in adult mice (BALB-C strain). Challenge was undertaken at 90-days post-vaccination using a lethal dose of a vampire bat rabies virus (100 LD 50% in mice); vampire bats are one of the main reservoirs in Latin America. The edible vaccine induced viral neutralizing antibodies (VNA) which, protected mice 100% against challenge. The control group did not survive. The G protein of the Vnukovo strain expressed in transgenic maize may be considered as an oral immunogen against rabies, conferring cross-protection.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To report the results of the Home Parenteral Nutrition (HPN) registry of the NADYA-SENPE working group of the years 2004 and 2005. MATERIAL AND METHODS We summarized the data of the new on-line HPN registry of the NADYA-SENPE group for the period 2004-2005. RESULTS During the year 2004, 70 HPN-patients (23 males and 47 females) were registered from 14 hospitals. Mean age of adults was 53,7 +/- 14,87 years (m +/- SD) and 6 +/- 2,83 years for those younger than 14 years. The most frequent etiologies of the intestinal failure were neoplasia (24%) and mesenteric ischaemia (19%). Tunnelled catheters were used in 75% of the patients. The catheter-related infections were the most frequent complications, with a rate of 0,98 episodes/10(3) days. In 69% of the cases the nutritional support was maintained for more than 2 years. HPN solutions and disposables were supplied by the hospital pharmacy in 81% and 83%, respectively. Up to 54% of the patients had a normal activity level. The most frequent reasons to end HPN treatment were the transition to oral intake (41%), or exitus (28%). During the year 2005, 79 patients (33 males and 46 females) were registered from 14 hospitals. Mean age of adults was 52,39 +/- 14,21 years and 6,5 +/- 5,21 years for those younger than 14 yrs. The most frequent etiologies of the intestinal failure were neoplasia (22%), and mesenteric ischaemia (15%). Tunnelled catheters were used in 63% of the patients. The catheter-related infections were the most frequent complications, with a rate of 1,14 episodes/10(3) days. In 51% of the cases the nutritional support was maintained for more than 2 years. HPN solutions and disposables were supplied by the hospital pharmacy in 76% and 81%, respectively. Up to 50% of the patients had a normal activity level. The most frequent reasons to end HPN treatment were the transition to oral/enteral feeding (41%) and exitus (31%). CONCLUSIONS We have observed a mild decrease in the number of HPN patients registered in the period 2004-2005, probably related to the change of the registry. The characteristics of the patients are similar to previous years. We have observed an increase in the septic catheter-related complications in the year 2005.

Abstract
Bronchopulmonary sequestration (BPS), which can be intralobar or extralobar, is a rare developmental anomaly of the lung characterized by nonfunctional pulmonary tissue without communication with the tracheobronchial tree and with an aberrant systemic arterial blood supply. The intralobar type is typically within the pleural cavity with an arterial feeding vessel generally arising from the thoracic aorta and with venous drainage into the left atrium. The prognosis is poor in cases diagnosed before 26 weeks' gestation and when there is mediastinal shift, polyhydramnios and fetal hydrops. The ideal prenatal management option remains undefined. We present a series of three complicated cases of intralobar BPS treated prenatally with percutaneous ultrasound-guided fetal sclerotherapy (FST). The feeding vessel was successfully accessed percutaneously under ultrasound guidance in all cases. FST with polidocanol resulted in complete obliteration of the blood flow to the mass. Abnormal Doppler findings, ascites, hydrops and polyhydramnios resolved and all patients were delivered at term. Antenatal treatment of patients with complicated BPS can be successfully achieved with FST, which is a simple and inexpensive technique. Comparison of risks and benefits of this approach with other techniques is warranted.

Abstract
The aim of the study presented here was to assess the efficacy and tolerability of linezolid in the treatment of orthopedic implant infections (OII). Eighty-five patients with an OII treated with linezolid were prospectively followed up for a minimum of 12 months from the end of antibiotic therapy. Outcome was evaluated in relation to the duration and type of symptoms (acute or chronic) and the retention or removal of the implant. For acute and chronic infections, the respective success rates were 100 and 92.3% when the implant was removed and 72.2 and 42.8% when it was not. The median length of linezolid treatment in acute and chronic infections was 47 and 60 days, respectively. Thrombocytopenia was observed in four (4.7%) patients and anemia in five (5.8%). The results suggest oral linezolid is an effective and well-tolerated alternative for treating OII.

Abstract
This study looked at measurement of endotoxaemia as a tool in determining prognosis and probable response to treatment in scouring lambs. One hundred eighty-three lambs in the first 15-20 days of life, from eight Merino sheep farms located in the region of La Serena, south-west Spain, were used in this experiment. Scouring and normal/control lambs were selected following a clinical examination, the scouring group was further divided into subgroups, specifically those that did or did not survive 72 h following treatment. At the time of the clinical examination, faecal and blood samples were taken. Faecal culture and commercial faecal antigen tests for detection of enteropathogens in faeces and serum endotoxin measurement using chromogenic lymulus amoebocyte lysate (LAL) were carried out. Scouring lambs received 0.07 mg/kg liveweight halofuginone once a day for 3 days, a single oral dose of 0.20 mg/kg liveweight of spectinomycin and oral rehydration fluid. The pathogens isolated were Cryptosporidium spp. and Escherichia coli. The case fatality rate was 51% in the scouring lambs. Postmortem findings were consistent with enterotoxigenic E. coli infection. The concentration of endotoxin was 0.18 +/- 0.12 ng/ml in the control group, 0.35 +/- 0.17 ng/ml in the surviving lambs and 0.46 +/- 0.14 ng/ml in the non-surviving lambs. Significant differences between groups were found. Case fatality rate of the scouring lambs with endotoxaemia below 0.30 ng/ml was 0%, while it was 100% above 0.50 ng/ml. These results may be utilized as a prognostic indicator in lambs affected by E. coli and Cryptosporidium that will help aid in decision-making as to whether to treat a lamb or not based on its chances of survival.

Abstract
On the basis of the electrochemical results obtained for thin films of 7,7,8,8- tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) on a glassy carbon electrode, the reduction and oxidation of the [TCNQ](0/)(-) couple in KCl aqueous media occurs via a mechanism involving layer-by-layer nucleation and growth. In situ recorded UV-visible spectroelectrochemical data allow two different crystal structures for the oxidized form of TCNQ to be discriminated.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Children cause of intestinal failure is short-bowel syndrome. It provokes an altered absorption of nutrients and makes patients to be dependent on parenteral nutrition (PN) while they wait or not for an intestinal transplantation, with its side effects. It is crucial to achieve the maximum efficiency of remaining intestine. Many surgical techniques have been led to reduce stasis of dilated small intestine and improve the mucosal surface area for absorption. METHODS Six patients have presented intestinal failure because of a surgical resection during newborn period. 2 gastroschisis, 2 intestinal atresias (Apple-peel), 1 necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) and 1 midgut volvulus. 4 preserve ileocecal valve (ICV): 2 Apple-peel, 1 NEC and the midgut volvulus. The shortest length of bowel after resection were 12cm without ICV (gastroschisis) and 18cm with ICV in a preterm newborn of 24 weeks of gestational age (midgut volvulus). Tapering and plication have been done in Apple-peel cases. No complementary surgical techniques have been necessary in NEC and volvulus. Gastroschisis cases had 12 and 40 cm of small bowel without ICV. In the first one, during newborn period an intestinal lengthening according to Bianchi was done, followed by sequential transversal enteroplasty (STEP), partial gastrectomy and plication of 1st and 2nd duodenal portion. In the second, an STEP was done. All patients have received cycled and optimized PN (COPN) in our centre, only one case (gastroschisis) proceeding from another centre had received standard PN and developed a great hepatic affectation. RESULTS 2 Apple-peel have been adapted to normal enteral nutrition after 3 and 18 months of COPN, such as NEC and volvulus (3-6 months). One gastroschisis (12cm) has a normal hepatic function with free oral nutrition and home COPN at 23 months. The other one (40cm) has COPN and started enteral nutrition 1 month after surgery, although its hepatic function remains altered. CONCLUSIONS Parenteral nutrition is essential for these patients to survive. We would like to enhance the importance of COPN in order to preserve hepatic function. Surgical procedures aim to avoid stasis and bacterial overgrowth and improve intestinal motility. Different techniques may be used alone or sequentially. The purpose of this management is to achieve nutritional autonomy or increase waiting time before intestinal transplantation.

Abstract
This study compares some etiological factors involved in the naturally occurrence of lamb scours in 18 Merino sheep farms randomly selected in the area of “La Serena” (Southwest Spain). A lack of influence of some variables (flock size, type of facilities, type of breeding, lambing percentage, isolation of Campylobacter jejuni, Rotavirus spp., Coronavirus spp. and Salmonella spp.) on lamb mortality rate was detected. The opposite was true for cleaning of the lambing areas, organization of lambing periods, accumulation of lambs in the pens, high content of fat, protein and lactose in milk and low serum gamma globulin and total protein in lambs and ewes. Cryptosporidium spp. and Escherichia coli isolation showed a trend to be linked to the presence of diarrhoea. A positive correlation was found between serum total protein in ewes and serum gamma globulin in lambs. Thus, the measure of serum total protein in ewes before lambing would be a valuable indicator of the risk of lamb scouring and it would be useful to establish an adequate programme to prevent this condition in the farms of this geographical area.

Abstract
This paper reports a new mathematical model for consecutive two-dimensional phase transitions that accounts for the chronoamperometric behavior observed in the formation of electrochemical phases by 4,4'-bipyridyl cation radical (BpyH(2)(*)(+)) on mercury in aqueous iodide solutions. Also, a new interpretation for the induction time is proposed.

Abstract
Tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4) supplementation has been applied in PKU treatment, resulting in successful control of blood phenylalanine (Phe) concentrations. We evaluated serotonin status in PKU patients under classical dietary treatment (n = 40) and in a group of 11 PKU patients under BH4 treatment, both during a 6-month period. Platelet serotonin values were significantly lower in PKU patients under dietary treatment when compared with controls. A negative correlation was observed between plasma Phe and platelet serotonin concentrations (r = -0.367, p = 0.017) in PKU patients. Platelet serotonin concentration increased significantly after both 1 and 6 months of BH4 therapy when compared with baseline conditions (Wilcoxon test: p = 0.013 and p = 0.021, respectively), while no differences were observed when comparing plasma Phe concentrations at the different points. Our results indicate that PKU patients under classical treatment have decreased platelet serotonin concentrations, probably owing to continued high Phe values, while BH4 supplementation restored platelet serotonin values.

Abstract
A field study was performed to evaluate the effect of exposure to organophosphorus (OP) and carbamate (CB) pesticides on the lizard Gallotia galloti palmae. Butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) activity was measured in the plasma of 420 lizards collected from agricultural and reference areas on the Island of La Palma (Canary Islands, Spain) in two sampling periods. Exposure to cholinesterase-inhibiting pesticides was evaluated by a statistical criterion based on a threshold value (two standard deviations below the mean enzyme activity) calculated for the reference group, and a chemical criterion based on the in vitro reactivation of BChE activity using pyridine-2-aldoxime methochloride (2-PAM) or after water dilution of the sample. Mean (+/- SD) BChE activity for lizards from agricultural areas was significantly lower (Fuencaliente site = 2.00 +/- 0.98 micromol min(-1) ml(-1), Tazacorte site = 2.88 +/- 1.08) than that for lizards from the reference areas (Los Llanos site = 3.06 +/- 1.17 micromol min(-1) ml(-1), Tigalate site = 3.96 +/- 1.62). According to the statistical criterion, the number of lizards with BChE depressed was higher at Fuencaliente (22% of males and 25.4% of females) than that sampled at Tazacorte (7.8% of males and 6.2% of females). According to the chemical criterion, Fuencaliente also yielded a higher number of individuals (112 males and 47 females) with BChE activity inhibited by both OP and CB pesticides. CBs appeared to be the pesticides most responsible for BChE inhibition because most of the samples showed reactivation of BChE activity after water treatment (63.3% from Fuencaliente and 29% from Tazacorte). We concluded that the use of reactivation techniques on plasma BChE activity is a better and more accurate method for assessing field exposure to OP/CB pesticides in this lizard species than making direct comparisons of enzyme activity levels between sampling areas.

Abstract
Atomic diffusion is usually understood as a succession of random, independent displacements of an adatom over the surface's potential energy landscape. Nevertheless, an analysis of molecular dynamics simulations of self-diffusion on Cu(111) demonstrates the existence of different types of correlations in the atomic jumps at all temperatures. Thus, the atomic displacements cannot be correctly described in terms of a random walk model. This fact has a profound impact on the determination and interpretation of diffusion coefficients and activation barriers.
