Abstract
Concentrations and compositions of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in particle size fractions of road dust sampled from contrasting areas of an industrialised city in Korea are reported. The largest amounts of road dust were present in industrial areas, followed by areas subject to heavy traffic, and the lowest amounts were associated with a residential area. The highest concentrations of PAHs were recorded in road dust sampled from the areas with the heaviest traffic (0.45-4.1 μg/g), followed by industrial areas (0.1-3.56 μg/g), with the lowest concentrations associated with a residential area (0.32-1.95 μg/g). PAH concentrations in the fractionated dust from the industrialised areas exhibited an inverse correlation with particle size. Although a similar general pattern was observed in the areas of heavy traffic, some increased concentrations associated with larger particles possibly reflect petrogenic contributions. Particles in road dusts from the residential area were generally smaller than those from the other areas, with PAH composition dominated by pyrogenic sources. PAH compositional profiles, evaluated through diagnostic isomeric ratios, indicate that exhaust emissions, rather than crankcase oils or tire and asphalt abrasion, are the major polluting source.

Abstract
Extracts of 21 sediment samples from Masan Bay, Korea, used in an earlier chemical measurement, were screened for their ability to induce estrogen, - and dioxin - like gene expression using the E-Assay (+), DR-CALUX assay, respectively, and to inhibit acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity using an in vitro AChE assay. Biological impact in the industry-rich inner bay is higher than outer bay. DDTs (0.65), coplanar PCBs (0.77), HCHs (0.64), PAHs (0.61) and APs (0.53) with good correlation to E-assay (+) are seen as environmental estrogens. The highest induction of DR-CALUX response was seen again at station M12 and 15 which received sewage effluents. PCDD/DFs gave the highest correlation (0.75). Interestingly, the M12 station at the sewage treatment outlet showed the highest activity. Among the targeted chemicals APs (0.66), PCBs (0.64), PAHs (0.61) and DDT (0.49) correlated well with the AChE bioassay. Spearman rank correlation on analytical and biochemical results affirmed the 'hot spots' and point sources (e.g., sewage treatment and industrial outfall) and suspected toxicants. Significant correlations between organo chlorine pesticides, PCBs, dioxins and alkylphenols and their biological effects were observed.

Abstract
Ambrosia trifida L., known as giant ragweed, is native to North America and was introduced in Korea in the 1970s (4). It is now widely naturalized, and since 1999, has been designated as one of 11 most 'harmful nonindigenous plants' by the Korean Ministry of Environment because of its adverse effects on native plants. Various strategies to eradicate this noxious weed have been unsuccessful (4). In June 2008, leaf spot symptoms on this weed were found in Inje, Korea. Hundreds of giant ragweed growing along stream banks contained leaf spots with leaf yellowing and premature defoliation. Leaf lesions were 1 to 5 mm in diameter, angular to irregular, dark brown without a distinct margin, later becoming pallid with a brown margin. Between 2008 and 2011, the authors observed the same symptoms in Dongducheon, Yangku, Namyangju, and Pocheon, Korea. Voucher specimens have been housed in the herbarium of Korea University. Numerous black pycnidia were formed on the lesion. Pycnidia were amphigenous, globose, dark brown, ostiolate, and measured 80 to 130 μm in diameter. Conidia were filiform, straight to mildly curved, eguttulate, hyaline, 18 to 36 × 1.5 to 2.5 μm, one to three septate, subtruncate at the base, and tapering to a rounded apex. Single-conidial isolations onto potato dextrose agar formed dark grayish colonies. Pycnidia matured after 5 weeks when plates were incubated under fluorescent illumination for 12-h photoperiods at 25°C. On the basis of morphological and cultural characteristics, the fungus was identified as Septoria epambrosiae D.F. Farr (2). Three isolates were deposited in the Korean Agricultural Culture Collection (KACC). Preliminary morphological identification of the fungal isolates was confirmed by molecular data. The internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of rDNA was amplified using the ITS1/ITS4 primers and sequenced. The resulting sequences of 449 bp obtained from the three isolates were identical to each other. They showed 100% similarity when compared with a sequence of S. epambrosiae (GenBank No. AF279582). The nucleotide sequence of a representative isolate (KACC43850) was deposited in GenBank (No. JN695498). Pathogenicity was confirmed by inoculating the leaves of three seedlings with a conidial suspension (~2 × 105 conidia/ml). Three noninoculated seedlings served as controls. Plants were maintained in a glasshouse at 100% relative humidity for 48 h. After 6 days, typical leaf spots, identical to the one observed in the field, started to develop on the leaves of the inoculated plants. No symptoms were observed on the control plants. The fungus was successfully reisolated from the symptomatic plants, fulfilling Koch's postulates. A leaf spot disease associated with S. epambrosiae has previously been recorded on A. artemisiifolia in Hungary (1-3) and A. trifida in North America (2,3). To our knowledge, this is the first report of S. epambrosiae on giant ragweed in Asia. Because of its potential as a biocontrol agent, further studies are needed. References: (1) G. Bohar and I. Abstract
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the safety and efficacy of infusion of terlipressin during living donor liver transplantation (LDLT). METHODS: Patients undergoing LDLT with low systemic vascular resistance index (SVRI) and pulmonary vascular resistance index (PVRI) ( n = 41) were randomly allocated into control ( n = 20) and terlipressin groups ( n = 21). Terlipressin was infused at 1.0 – 4.0 μg/kg per h in the terlipressin group during surgery. Controls received generally accepted inotropic and vasopressor agents. RESULTS: Terlipressin infusion induced significantly higher SVRI and PVRI at 60 min after drug infusion, produced significantly greater hourly urine output during the anhepatic phase, and was related to significantly shorter stays in the postoperative intensive care unit (ICU) compared with control treatment (mean ± SD ICU stay 5.7 ± 1.5 versus 6.9 ± 1.5 days, respectively). Patients given a terlipressin infusion > 2.0 μg/kg per h during the preanhepatic phase had a median ICU stay of < 6 days (sensitivity 90.0%; specificity 89.0%). CONCLUSIONS: Terlipressin infusion improved low SVRI and PVRI during LDLT and may have contributed to better renal function and shorter ICU stays.

Abstract
After the Hebei Spirit oil spill in December 2007, mixtures of three types of Middle East crude oil were stranded along 375 km of coastline in Western Korea. Stranded oils were monitored for their identity and weathering status in 19 stations in three provinces. The results obtained using a weathering model indicated that evaporation would be a dominant weathering process immediately after the spill and the sequential changes of chemical composition in the field verified this prediction positively. In the early stages of weathering, the half-life of spilled oil was calculated to be 2.6 months. Tiered fingerprinting approaches identified background contamination and confirmed the identity of the stranded oils with the spill source. Double ratios using alkylated phenanthrenes and dibenzothiophenes in samples after the spill clearly reveal the impact of weathering on oil. However, to derive defensible fingerprinting for source identification and allocation, recalcitrant biomarkers are extremely useful. Weathering status of the stranded oils was evaluated using composition profiles of saturated hydrocarbons, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and various weathering indices. Most samples collected 8 months after the spill were categorized in either the advanced or extreme weathering states. Gradual increase in toxic components in the residual oil through weathering emphasizes the need for adaptive ecotoxicological approaches.

Abstract
Benthic ecosystem in Gwangyang Bay, a fast developing industrial area with steel production, port container handling, petroleum and other chemical processing in South Korea was studied. The average levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (ΣPCB) in the benthic components were: seawater 2.99 ± 0.13 (ng/L); sediment 294 ± 118 (ng/g TOC); [biota=ng/g lipid] starfish 92; prawn 131 ± 2; mussels 127 ± 22; crab 182 ± 114; clam 187; polychaeta 215; sea cucumber 497 ± 90; squill 603 ± 38; fish 396 ± 159. Levels in the inner bay samples were higher than the outer bay samples suggesting land based pollution. Good correlation (r(2)=0.79; p<0.05) existed between PCB concentration and lipid content indicating partitioning processes in action. PCB signature in the abiotic and biotic components shows enrichment of lower chlorinated congeners emitted by a unique source nearby, viz. steel manufacturing plant.

Abstract
Laboratory-based biochemical acute pancreatitis (BAP) is considered to be a benign but common complication after liver transplantation (LT), which to compensate for transfusion-related hypocalcemia, usually demands a large quantity of exogenous calcium which may be associated with pancreatic injury. We sought to investigate the relationship between intraoperative calcium-related factors and BAP occurrence after living-donor LT. Perioperative data, including intraoperative calcium chloride administration and serum calcium levels, were reviewed from 217 patients who underwent living-donor LT. Hyperamylasemia (≥ 458 U/L) was used to define posttransplantation BAP according to previous reports. Posttransplantation BAP was identified among 37 patients (17.3%), who showed a greater death rate than those in the non-BAP group (21.6% vs 8.6%; P = .013). Compared to with calcium-related parameters, the 2 groups showed differences in the amount of calcium chloride administered during the preanhepatic phase, the serum calcium surge during the initial 2 h after the liver graft reperfusion, the last serum calcium level, and the amount of transfused pack red blood cells (P < .05). However, after multivariate adjustment, only the amount of administered calcium chloride during the preanhepatic phase (odds ratios, 2.11-5.87, depending an amount) and the serum calcium surge during the initial 2 hours after liver graft reperfusion (odds ratio, 2.34) were selected as risk factors for posttransplantation BAP. The risk ratio of posttransplantation BAP increased in proportion to the administered amount of calcium chloride. In conclusion, limiting excessive calcium administration during the preanhepatic phase and close monitoring of the serum calcium surge after reperfusion may be required to prevent posttransplantation BAP in living-donor LT.

Abstract
We present a case of non-specific interstitial pneumonia (NSIP) with reversed halo sign on thin-section CT. A 52-year-old female presented with a cough and New York Heart Association (NYHA) class 2 dyspnoea of 4 months duration. A chest radiograph showed poorly defined, patchy ground-glass opacities in both lungs. Thin-section CT demonstrated the reversed halo sign, which is a central ground-glass opacity surrounded by crescent or ring-shaped areas of consolidation in multifocal areas. Multifocal patchy ground-glass opacity and consolidation and enlarged paratracheal, hilar and subcarinal lymph nodes were also shown. Video-assisted thoracic surgical (VATS) lung biopsy was performed, and histopathology revealed cellular NSIP.

Abstract
We report small angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) studies of isotropic, nematic, and smectic mesophases formed by binary mixtures of bent-core (BC) and rod-shaped (RS) molecules. While optical studies indicate that the components are fully miscible, SAXS reveals fascinating structures that are consistent with segregation on a nanoscopic scale. We find that tilted smectic clusters, which have been previously reported in both the nematic and isotropic states of the pure BC materials, are also present in mixtures with up to 50 wt% of the RS compound; this is consistent with previous dielectric and flexoelectric studies on such mixtures. Unexpectedly in this concentration range the clusters are present in the isotropic and in the induced smectic phase range, as well as throughout the nematic phase. The results in the smectic phase also reveal complex layering phenomena, providing important insight into the interaction between bent and rod-shaped molecules. These studies will be crucial in the design of promising new functional nanomaterials.

Abstract
BACKGROUNDS Steroids are the predominant immunosuppressive agent used after liver transplantation even though patients may experience steroid-related side effects. AIMS The objective of this study was to determine whether steroid use influenced the outcomes of liver transplantations. METHODS Three hundred forty-four adult patients underwent liver transplantation between May 2002 and December 2007. We reviewed the medical records of these patients, excluding those younger than 18 years old or those who died within the first month. The protocol withdrawal group (group 1) ceased steroid use within 5 months after transplantation, while the late withdrawal group (group 2) continued steroid use beyond this 5-month posttransplantation period. RESULTS All patients were classified according to the onset of steroid withdrawal (group 1: n = 243; group 2: n = 99). The incidences of biopsy-confirmed and treated acute rejection episodes (ARE) at 12 and 24 months posttransplantation were 7.8% and 12.3% in group 1, but 25.3% and 27.3% in group 2, respectively (P = .001). The incidence of hepatitis B virus (HBV) recurrence in group 2 was higher than that in group 1 (P = .007). The HBV-free survival rates at 1 and 2 years posttransplantation were 99.0% and 97.1% in group 1 and 96.1% and 92.1% in group 2, respectively. New-onset diabetes, avascular necrosis of the femoral head, corticosteroid-resistant ARE, hepatocellular carcinoma recurrence, as well as graft and patient survivals did not differ between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS Acute rejection episodes and HBV recurrence occurred less frequently when steroids were discontinued within 5 months after liver transplantation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study evaluated the usefulness of measurements of X-ray attenuation (in Hounsfield units) obtained from unenhanced CT images for attenuation correction of the positron emission tomography (PET) data from PET/CT in the assessment of regional lymph node metastasis in oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma. METHODS 17 patients with oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma underwent surgery after evaluation with PET/CT. After the excised lymph nodes were reviewed, we compared the histopathology and PET/CT findings, and analysed the lymph node metastasis. When 18-F fludeoxyglucose (FDG) uptake in the lymph nodes was focally prominent in comparison with background mediastinal activity (regardless of lymph node size), the lymph nodes were considered to be positive for malignancy by PET/CT. The mean Hounsfield units of mediastinal lymph nodes showing abnormally increased FDG uptake in PET/CT was retrospectively evaluated using images from the unenhanced CT component of PET/CT. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was applied to determine the optimal cut-off value of mean Hounsfield units for detecting individual lymph node metastases. RESULTS For depiction of malignant nodal groups in each lymph node group, the sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of PET/CT based on increased FDG uptake were 58.8%, 74.5% and 70.8%, respectively. For patients with nodal groups that were positive for uptake by PET/CT, the mean attenuation in lymph nodes as measured by CT was 48 ± 13 HU for malignant nodes and 75 ± 18 HU for benign nodes. This difference was statistically significant (p<0.001). Using ROC curve analysis, we determined the cut-off as 71 HU. When we excluded lymph nodes with attenuation higher than 71 HU from the nodes determined as malignant by PET/CT, the specificity and accuracy for detecting metastatic lymph nodes improved to 90.9% and 83.3%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS When interpreting lymph node metastasis in oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma using PET/CT, the assumption that any lymph node with mean HU>71 is benign can improve diagnostic accuracy.

Abstract
Abstract
Purpose
Basal-like breast cancer, as defined by gene expression profiling, is associated with aggressive phenotype and poor clinical outcome. Recent immunohistochemical validation suggested that basal-like subtype could be characterized by staining for cytokeratin (CK) 5/6 and epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) in triple negative breast cancers (TNBCs). Most of studies evaluated surrogate immunopannel of biomarkers to define basal-like breast cancer subtypes only in the TNBCs, although not all basal-like breast cancers are triple negative breast cancers (TNBCs). The significance of basal marker expression in other than triple negative breast cancer remains to be evaluated. To define prognostic impact of basal marker expression in HER2 positive breast cancer, we investigated cytokeratin (CK) 5/6 and epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) expression in patients with HER2 positive early breast cancer.
Patients and Methods:
Biomarker evaluation was performed using five immunohistochemical surrogate panel of estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), HER2, CK 5/6 and EGFR in HER2 positive early breast cancers. Amplification of HER2 was confirmed by fluorescent in situ hybridization. HER2-positive breast cancer was classified by expression of basal markers (either EGFR or CK5/6) as “basal HER2- positive” (patients with HER2- positive disease who express basal markers) and “non-basal HER2” (patients with HER2-positive disease who did not express basal markers). We compared the prognostic significance of the basal marker expression between two groups.
RESULTS:
HER2 overexpression was found in 24.8% of early breast cancers with available tissue specimens from the primary tumor (236 of 952 cases). Basal marker co-expression was identified in 12.7% of HER2 positive early breast cancers. (30 of 236 patients) Basal HER2 positive breast cancer was significantly associated with age greater than 50 years (P=0.012), absence of ER (P < 0.001) and PR (P=0.004). The basal marker co-expression in patients with HER2 amplified early breast cancers demonstrated poorer overall survival (basal positive vs. basal negative, 85.6 months [95% confidence interval (CI), 70.8- 100.3 months] vs. 122.3 [C.I. 133.7-139.9], P=0.001) and disease free survival (DFS) (44.6 months [95% CI, 14.7-74.8] vs 110.7 months [95% CI, 96.4-123.9]; P=. 008) respectively. In lymph node positive group, basal marker expression retained its statistical significance at the multivariate level (P=0.047) HER2 positive breast cancer with lymph node involvement with basal marker expression showed substantially poorer overall survival with 2.1-fold (95% CI, 1.0-4.2) risk for death.
CONCLUSION:
Considerable number of HER2 positive breast cancer co-expressed basal markers. Our data demonstrated that simultaneous basal marker expression in HER2 positive early breast cancer is associated with poor clinical outcome. The molecular significance of basal marker expression in HER2 positive breast cancer needs to be further investigated.

Abstract
Congener specific determination of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) was carried out in 21 surface sediment samples and a sediment core from Masan Bay, Korea. Among the 40 PBDE congeners targeted only 29 were detectable. PBDE congener profile within sediments was dominated by BDE-209 followed by BDEs-99, -47, -153 and -183, sequentially. In surface sediments, the average ΣPBDEs levels approached that of average ΣPCBs values. However, trends observed in the sediment core suggest that this pattern will alter over time and result in higher surface sediment PBDE concentrations than PCBs in future. Various diffuse and point sources for PBDEs and PCBs were identified in this location. Shipping and other industrial activities were associated with PCB contamination while domestic and industrial waste discharges corresponded with PBDE contamination. The average concentration for PBDEs and PCBs in surface sediments were 5.7, 7.2 ng/g dry weight, respectively.

Abstract
Second-harmonic generation (SHG) is studied in the magnetically aligned nematic phase of a bent-core liquid crystal (BCN) and compared to similar measurements made on a conventional rodlike (calamitic) nematic compound. The second-harmonic (SH) light detected from both materials is predominantly due to scattering and therefore incoherent. Results on the calamitic are consistent with a polarization induced by ordinary director fluctuations in the nematic phase. However, the SH scattering collected in the BCN exhibits a different temperature and angular dependence. We discuss how these differences could arise from the effects of short-range correlated, smectic-C-type molecular clusters, which have been detected in recent studies on various BCN materials.

Abstract
Crystalline Si/SiOx core/shell nanowires (NWs) are self-assembled by annealing Ni-coated hydrogenated Si-rich SiOx (SRO:H) films at 1100 degrees C in the presence of Si powder. Plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition is used to grow 100 nm SRO:H thin films with varying silicon concentration (n(Si)). The NWs vary from SiOx nanowires to Si/SiOx core/shell structures depending on the composition of the SRO:H substrate, with the fraction of core/shell structures increasing with increasing Si concentration. As n(Si) increases from 37 to 43 at.%, the average diameter of the NWs also increases from 48 to 157 nm. A growth model based on the diffusion-assisted vapor-liquid-solid mechanism is proposed to explain how the core/shell structures are self-assembled. Photoluminescence (PL) spectra of the individual NWs have two major emission bands in the near UV (381 nm) and blue (423 nm) ranges at n(Si) = 43 at.%, named as UV and BL PL bands, respectively. In contrast, only the BL PL band is observed at n(Si) < or = 39 at.%. These results suggest that the BL and UV PL bands can be attributed to the defect states in the SiOx shell and at the Si core/SiOx shell interface, respectively, and that the BL band is closely related to the growth process of the NWs.

Abstract
The spatiotemporal distributions of dissolved and/or dispersed oil in seawater and pore water were monitored on site by fluorometric detection method after the Hebei Spirit oil spill. The oil concentrations in intertidal seawater, 15 days after the spill, were as high as 16,600 microg/L and appeared to decrease below the Korean marine water quality standard of 10 microg/L at most sites 10 months after the spill. Fluorometric detection of oil in pore water was introduced to eliminate the effects of grain size for the quantification of oil in sediments and to better explain spatial and temporal distribution of oil pollution at sandy beaches. The fluorescence detection method was compared with the conventional laboratory technique of total petroleum hydrocarbon analysis using gas chromatography. The method of fluorescence detection of oil was capable of generating results much faster and more cost-effectively than the traditional GC technique.

Abstract
We have investigated structural, electrical, and electro-mechanical properties of lead-free piezoelectric BaTiO3 doped Na0.5K0.5NbO3 (BTO-NKN) thin films deposited by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) methods. BTO-NKN thin films have been deposited on La0.5Sr0.5CoO3 (LSCO) bottom electrodes with LaAlO3 (LAO) substrates. X-ray diffraction data have shown that all the BTO-NKN and bottom electrodes are highly oriented with their c-axes normal to the substrates. In order to improve the morphology of BTO-NKN thin films, we have located an eclipse shutter between a target and a substrate. Root-mean-square roughness was changed from 91 nm to 21 nm with eclipse shutter enhanced PLD (E-PLD) method. Furthermore, the enhanced surface morphology leads to the improvement in electrical or electro-mechanical properties mainly due to increased density. Typical capacitance and d33 values of a BTO-NKN film deposited by E-PLD method are 1000 pF and 30 pmN, respectively.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to analyse audiological data after microvascular decompression (MVD) for hemifacial spasm (HFS), and to compare the data with hearing before surgery. METHODS Auditory functions were studied before and after surgery in 698 patients who underwent an MVD of the intracranial portion of the facial nerve for HFS. The results were expressed as the average of pure tone audiometry (PTA) and speech discrimination score (SDS). RESULTS 668 patients (95.7%) had no hearing loss immediately after surgery (group 1). 17 patients (2.4%) had a postoperative decrease in PTA exceeding 15 dB and a decrease in SDS which was proportional to the postoperative PTA thresholds (group 2). Eight patients (1.2%) had poor SDS that appeared to be out of proportion to the degree of hearing loss depicted by the postoperative PTA thresholds, suggesting retrocochlear or cochlear nerve pathology (group 3). Five patients (0.7%) had total deafness after surgery (group 4). In group 2, 12 patients (70.6%) returned to their preoperative hearing capacity. However, among the eight patients in group 3 and five in group 4, only two (25%) and none (0%) have returned to their preoperative hearing status, respectively. CONCLUSION In this large study, permanent hearing loss occurred in 16 patients (2.2%). Patients with a mild hearing loss with a good SDS (cochlear type) demonstrated much better prognosis than those with poor SDS (retrocochlear type) or total deafness. In addition, total deafness after surgery had no chance of recovery to preoperative hearing capacity.

Abstract
Chemical contamination of the coastal marine environment by polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) was assessed along with emerging contaminants such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in an industrially well-developed country (France) and a fast-developing country (Korea). Other chemicals, i.e. nonylphenol (NP) and 5 beta(H)-cholestan-3beta-ol (coprostanol) were determined to trace industrial waste and/or domestic inputs. These compounds were analyzed in coastal sediments and mussels in two enclosed coastal water bodies: Masan Bay (South Korea) and Thau lagoon (France). The overall levels of target organic contaminants were higher in Masan Bay than in Thau lagoon. The mean concentrations of 17 PCDD/Fs, 13 PBDEs, NP and coprostanol in Masan Bay sediments were, respectively, 1.3, 11, 248 and 291 ng g(-1) dry weight (d.w.); in Thau lagoon sediments they were, respectively, 0.39, not detectable (nd), 23 and 395 ng g(-1)d.w. Mean concentrations in mussels (coprostanol and cholestanol were not measured) were 0.0093, 13, 140 ng g(-1)d.w. in Masan Bay and 0.016, 0.94, 38 ng g(-1)d.w. in Thau lagoon. Principal component analysis of the contaminants and chemical tracers indicates possible point sources of pollution for Masan Bay and Thau lagoon. This study highlights a growing pollution problem in Asia and in particular a tremendous uptrend in Korea, in comparison to more controlled discharges and releases in Western Europe.

Abstract
Persistent organochlorine pollutants (POPs) such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dichlorodiphenyl trichloroethane and its metabolites (DDTs), chlordane compounds (CHLs), and hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs) were determined in Japanese common squid collected from the offshore waters of Korea. Liver accumulated higher levels of contaminants than mantle. The sums of DDTs, PCBs, CHLs and HCHs in liver were in the ranges of 164-4430 ng g(-1), 95-1030 ng g(-1), 15-121 ng g(-1), and 13-98 ng g(-1) on a lipid weight basis, respectively. Among the POPs, DDTs showed distinct regional difference in concentration levels and composition between the western and eastern offshore of Korea. One of the highest concentrations of DDTs so far recorded in the western offshore of Korea, that is Yellow Sea. This implies ongoing fresh input of technical DDT to this regional sea. HCHs were relatively high in the Yellow Sea as well, with an enhanced signal of gamma-HCH indicating recent input of lindane. In contrast, CHLs showed higher level in the eastern offshore of Korea, that is East Sea, but PCBs showed an even distribution in both regions. Squid could be a useful bio-indicator for monitoring offshore water contamination by POPs.

Abstract
Histidine decarboxylase (HDC) catalyzes the formation of histamine from histidine. Histamine has various effects in physiological and pathological reactions, such as inflammation, cell growth, and neuro-transmission. We investigated the role of hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-1 on hypoxia-induced HDC expression in human mast cell line, HMC-1 cells and mouse bone marrow-derived mast cells (BMMCs). Hypoxia significantly increased histamine production. HDC expression and activity were induced by hypoxia. Additionally, when cells were transfected with a native form of HIF-1alpha, hypoxia could induce higher HDC expression than in the nontransfected cell. HIF-1 binding activity for HDC 5' flanking region (HFR) was similar to that for the hypoxia-responsive element. Using HDC promoter deletion analysis, we also demonstrated that HFR was regulated by HIF-1 activation. In addition, depletion of HIF-1alpha prevents hypoxic induction of HDC in BMMCs. In conclusion, these results demonstrate that hypoxia induces HDC expression by transcriptional mechanisms dependent upon HIF-1.

Abstract
The contamination status of twelve persistent organic pollutants (POPs) on the Stockholm convention in the surface sediments of Han river, which is one of the largest river in the South Korea were investigated. Five organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) such as aldrin, dieldrin, endrin, mirex, and SigmaCHLs (alpha-chlordane, gamma-chlordane, cis-nonachlor, trans-nonachlor, and heptachlor) were not detected in all sediment samples. The overall concentrations of DDTs, HCB, dioxin-like PCBs (DL-PCBs) and PCDD/Fs were in the range of 1.05-8.94microgkg(-1) (average value: 3.93microgkg(-1)), 0.485-3.73microgkg(-1) (1.48microgkg(-1)), 41.5-4,530ngkg(-1) (548ngkg(-1)), and 23.1-368ngkg(-1) (131ngkg(-1)), respectively. The principal source of HCB, DL-PCBs and PCDD/Fs was identified as a deposition in this study. For the DL-PCBs, it was also shown that commercial PCBs product (Kanechlor 500 and/or Aroclor 1254) plays a role as a source in sediment.

Abstract
The gas-polymer and liquid-polymer interfacial reactions of photosensitive polyimide can annihilate photo-reactive carbon-carbon double bonds, which remain after photo-alignment process. The annihilation processes dramatically affect voltage holding ratio and reorientation of photo-active functional groups. Photochemical dimerizations were identified using UV-visible and FT-IR spectroscopy. Polyimide films containing cinnamate groups were irradiated by linear polarized ultra violet (LPUV) light. Schadt et al. claims that the photo-alignment results from the anisotropy depletion of the cinnamate side chains as a consequence of the (2+2) cycloaddition reactions. The photo-aligned polyimide induces the orientation of nematic liquid crystals perpendicular to the polarization axis. However, the un-reacted photo-sensitive functional groups generate problems such as image sticking and reduced contrast ratio. Voltage holding ratio and photo-fading observed from photo-alignment layer can be dramatically improved by annihilation process of remnant photoreactive groups.

Abstract
To assess the organochlorine contamination in the northeast coastal environment of Vietnam, a total of 41 surface sediments were collected from Ha Long Bay, Hai Phong Bay, and Ba Lat estuary, and analyzed for their organochlorine content. Organochlorine compounds (OCs) were widely distributed in the Vietnamese coastal environment. Among the OCs measured, DDT compounds predominated with concentrations ranging from 0.31 to 274 ng g(-1). The overall contamination level of DDTs in coastal sediments from northern Vietnam is comparable with those from other Asian countries. However, concentrations exceeding 100 ng g(-1) are comparable with high concentrations reported from India and China, the largest DDT consumers in the world. The overall concentrations of PCBs, HCHs, and chlordanes in surface sediments were in the ranges of 0.04-18.71 ng g(-1), not detected (n.d.) - 1.00 ng g(-1), and n.d. - 0.75 ng g(-1), respectively. Ha Long Bay and Hai Phong Bay were relatively more contaminated with DDTs and PCBs than other regions, respectively. In contrast, the distribution of HCHs was relatively homogeneous. OCs contamination in the coastal environment of Vietnam is closely related to shipping and industrial activities. The levels of DDT compounds in harbors and industrial areas exceeded their sediment quality guideline values suggested by Environment Canada [CCME (Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment), 2002. Canadian sediment quality guidelines for the protection of aquatic life. In: Canadian Environmental Quality Guidelines. Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment, Winnipeg, MB] and Australian and New Zealand [ANZECC and ARMCANZ, 2000. National water quality management strategy. Abstract
To assess the levels of organochlorine compounds (OCs) in the Chinese coastal environment, monitoring study using bivalves was conducted in 2005. A total of 21 bivalve samples covering the northeastern coast of China were collected and analyzed. Organochlorine compounds were widely distributed in the Chinese coastal environment, with dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) contamination being particularly prevalent. The overall concentrations of PCBs, DDTs, HCHs, chlordane compounds (CHLs), dieldrin, and endosulfans in bivalves were in the ranges of 3.27-25.4, 54.8-2680, 1.42-25.5, n.d. (not detected)-2.28, n.d.-4.02, and n.d.-9.55 ng g(-1) on a dry weight basis, respectively. The concentrations of DDT and HCH compounds are relatively higher than those from the coastal areas of other Asian countries. DDT metabolites were predominant, suggesting that the degradation of DDT is in progress in the Chinese coastal environment. Still, however, DDTs of high concentration exceeding 1000 ng g(-1) were observed at 19% of the stations surveyed. Among HCH compounds, beta-HCH, which is an isomer with strong persistency, was observed predominantly. Compositions of DDT and HCH compounds imply that fresh input of the two compounds into the Chinese coasts is possibly low.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) polymorphism may play a role in stroke and silent brain infarction (SBI) susceptibility, but the results among the populations studied to date have not been consistent. Thus, we investigated the association between ACE genotypes and ischemic stroke and SBI in Korean patients. SUBJECTS AND METHODS DNA samples from 237 stroke patients, 264 SBI patients and 234 age-matched controls were amplified using polymerase chain reaction to detect the ACE ins/del (I/D) polymorphism. Genotype was determined by the presence of a 490-bp band (I allele) or a 190-bp band (D allele) in agarose gel electrophoresis. RESULTS Odds ratios of the I/D and D/D genotypes and the overall (I/D + D/D) for the I/I genotype were significantly different between stroke patients and normal controls. However, there was no significant difference between patients with SBI and controls. CONCLUSIONS This study is the first report of a significant association between ACE polymorphism and ischemic stroke in the Asian population. Although no consistent associations have been found between ACE polymorphism and stroke in the populations studied to date, the ACE polymorphism may be a genetic determinant of ischemic stroke, at least in Korean patients.

Abstract
To understand the distribution characteristics of nonylphenolics and sterols, samples such as in creek water, sea surface water, waste water treatment plant (WWTP) effluent water, sediment and mussel were collected and analyzed. The principal analytes are nonylphenol (NP), nonylphenol monoethoxylate (NP1EO), nonylphenol diethoxylate (NP2EO), coprostanol (5beta) and cholestanol (5alpha). All these target pollutants showed 100% detection frequency in all of the samples analyzed. Total concentration of nonylphenolic compounds ranged from 334 to 3628ngl(-1) (average: 1331ngl(-1)) in creek water, from 15 to 36400ngl(-1) (average: 1013ngl(-1)) in sea surface water, from 131 to 2811ngg(-1) dry weight (average: 581ngg(-1) dry weight) in sediment and from 50.5 to 289ngg(-1) dry weight (average: 139ngg(-1) dry weight) in mussel. For water samples, levels of nonylphenolics determined in summer season were higher than those in spring season. Among them, nonylphenol and NP1EO was dominant in creek water and seawater, respectively. The highest concentration was recorded in sediment near a WWTP effluent outlet. And high levels of nonylphenolics and sterols were found in about 3km area surrounding WWTP effluent outlet. Coefficient of linear regression (R(2)) for NP in mussel and in sediment was 0.90. Similarly good correlation (R(2)=0.98) was obtained between concentration in water and in mussel indicating that a steady state has been reached in this bay. The calculated bio concentration factor (BCF=2990) for NP in Masan Bay agrees well with reported values in the literature.

Abstract
We demonstrate a hybrid process for fabricating one-dimensional wire devices. The process is a combination of an alignment procedure using dielectrophoresis and subsequent contact metal formation utilizing electrochemical deposition with non-toxic organic-based Au electrolytes. Several devices have been successfully made from GaN nanowires or multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) using our hybrid technique. We demonstrate that rapid thermal annealing improves the ohmic characteristics by five orders of magnitude in the case of the GaN devices and ∼300% in the case of the MWCNT devices. One of the reasons for this improvement is enhanced gold wetting due to the reduction of grain size at the annealing temperature.

Abstract
Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is a mediator of airway inflammation and remodelling in asthma. Transforming growth factor (TGF)-beta(1) plays pivotal roles in diverse biological processes, including tissue remodelling and repair in a number of chronic lung diseases. However, there are few studies elucidating the interactions between VEGF and TGF-beta(1) in allergic airway disease. A murine model of allergic airway disease was used to define the mechanism by which VEGF induces subepithelial fibrosis and to investigate a potential relationship between VEGF and TGF-beta(1) and the mechanisms by which VEGF signalling regulates TGF-beta(1) expression in allergic airway disease. The ovalbumin (OVA)-inhaled murine model revealed the following typical pathophysiological features of allergic airway disease in the lungs: increased numbers of inflammatory cells of the airways, airway hyperresponsiveness, increased peribronchial fibrosis, and increased levels of VEGF and TGF-beta(1). Administration of VEGF inhibitors reduced the pathophysiological signs of allergic airway disease and decreased the increased TGF-beta(1) levels and peribronchial fibrosis, including phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) activity after OVA inhalation. In addition, the increased TGF-beta(1) levels and collagen deposition after OVA inhalation were decreased by administration of PI3K inhibitors. These results suggest that inhibition of vascular endothelial growth factor attenuates peribronchial fibrosis, at least when mediated by regulation of transforming growth factor-beta(1) expression through phosphoinositide 3-kinase/Akt pathway in a murine model of allergic airway disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Because of the high vascularization of hemangiomas, preoperative misinterpretation may result in unexpected intraoperative hemorrhage and incomplete resection, which results in the persistence of clinical symptoms or recurrence. Our purpose was to analyze various MR imaging features of a spinal epidural hemangioma with histopathologic correlation. MATERIALS AND METHODS After searching through the pathology data bases in 3 hospitals, we included 14 patients (9 male and 5 female; mean age, 38 years; age range, 2-62 years) with spinal epidural hemangiomas confirmed by surgical resection after MR imaging. Three radiologists reviewed the MR imaging in consensus and categorized the features into subtypes on the basis of histopathologic findings. RESULTS We categorized the MR imaging features as follows: type A for a cystlike mass with T1 hyperintensity (2 cases, arteriovenous type with an organized hematoma), type B for a cystlike mass with T1 isointensity (3 cases, venous type), type C for a solid hypervascular mass (7 cases, cavernous type), and type D for an epidural hematoma (2 cases, cavernous type with hematoma). Types A and B had frequent single segmental involvement (4/5), whereas types C and D had multisegmental involvement in all. Regardless of MR types, lobular contour (8/14) and a rim of low T2 signal intensity (8/14) of the mass were common. T1 hyperintensity of the mass was occasionally seen (5/14). CONCLUSIONS Spinal epidural hemangiomas can have various MR imaging features according to their different histopathologic backgrounds. In addition to common features such as solid hypervascularity, lobular contour, and a rim of low T2 signal intensity, T1 hyperintensity or multisegmental involvement may also be a clue in the differential diagnosis of a spinal epidural hemangioma.

Abstract
A congener-specific determination of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) in 21 surface sediments from Masan Bay, Korea revealed that the most toxic 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (2,3,7,8-TCDD) was detected in 76% of the samples and 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzofuran (2,3,7,8-TCDF) in 100% of the samples analyzed. The concentration range of SigmaPCDDs and SigmaPCDFs are: 230-6900; 120-16700pgg(-1) dry mass respectively. WHO Toxic Equivalents (WHO-TEQ) in Masan Bay sediment ranged from 0.53 to 99ng TEQkg(-1)d.m. for PCDDs; 4 to 1300ngTEQkg(-1)d.m. for PCDFs. In comparison with an earlier survey, the concentrations of dioxins and furans have more than doubled and the SigmaWHO-TEQ values have increased 15 times within a decade. Both point and non-point sources of pollution are suspected, especially, local sewage treatment plants are found to contribute.

Abstract
The sound velocity and the attenuation coefficient of EPDM (Ethylene-propylene Diene Monomer) composites incorporated with Silicon Carbide particles (SiCp's) of various volume fractions (0-40%) were experimentally and theoretically investigated. For the experiment a through-transmission technique was used. For the theoretical prediction, some mechanical property models such as Reuss model and Coherent Potential Approximation (CPA) model etc. were employed. The experimental results showed that the sound velocity decreased with the increase of the SiCp volume fraction up to 30% and then increased with the 40 vol% specimen. The attenuation coefficient was increased with the increasing SiCp volume fractions. The modified Reuss model with a longitudinal elastic modulus predicted most well the experimental sound velocity and elastic modulus results.

Abstract
To assess the contamination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the marine environment of Korea, 117 sediment samples along the coast were collected and analyzed. This study provides perspectives on concentration ranges and on geographic distributions of PAHs. Sum of 16 PAHs concentrations are in the range of 8.80-18500 ng/g dry weight. Industrialized and urbanized region showed high level of PAHs contamination. When compared with nationwide monitoring results of USA and UK, concentration of total PAHs are in the order of UK>US>this study. Major PAHs sources inferred from diagnostic indices and statistical approach were both pyrogenic and petrogenic. In coastal and offshore sediments of Korea, 7.76% sites had a mean PAH ERL quotient >1.0, indicating the potential to cause adverse effects in sensitive species. Youngil Bay was recognized as highly contaminated with PAHs, and recommended to be managed with special plan.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The preferential accumulation of 5-aminolaevulinic acid (ALA)-induced protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) in neoplastic cells supports its potential use in the photodetection of porphyrin fluorescence in tumour cells. Hence, epithelial tumours, including basal cell carcinoma (BCC), might be visualized using the fluorescence of selectively accumulated ALA-induced PpIX. AIM In this study, we evaluated the clinical efficacy of PpIX fluorescence images using fluorescence image analysis (FIA) to define the lateral border between the tumour and tumour-free areas of facial BCC. METHODS FIA was used to define the lateral border between the tumour and tumour-free areas on red fluorescence images induced by the topical application of methyl 5-aminolaevulinate (MAL) ointment. According to the FIA results, 50 tissue samples, obtained from 10 patients with BCC, were divided into three categories: tumour area (n = 10), suspected tumour area (n = 20) and suspected tumour-free area (n = 20). These tissue samples were evaluated by histopathological examination. The FIA tool marked out the PpIX fluorescence image for defining the lateral border between the BCC tumour and tumour-free areas. RESULTS The rate of tumour detection from BCC lesions using PpIX fluorescence with the FIA tool showed a sensitivity of 94.1% and specificity of 82.6%. CONCLUSION These results suggest that MAL-induced PpIX fluorescence imaging using FIA is quite sensitive and specific for detecting tumour and occult tumour in facial BCC lesions. This method of presurgical in vivo imaging is therefore proposed as a useful tool for defining the lateral border between BCC tumour and tumour-free areas.

Comparison of the temporary diagnostic relief of transforaminal epidural steroid injection approaches: conventional versus posterolateral technique. AJNR Am J Neuroradiol 2007; 28:204-8. Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Conventional transforaminal epidural steroid injection (TFESI) has several problems. The purpose of this study was to compare the temporary diagnostic relief and advantages of TFESI performed using the conventional and posterolateral approaches. METHODS From August to December 2004, 187 patients received TFESI for lumbar radicular pain. A total of 108 patients (65 women, 43 men; mean age, 56 years) fulfilled the inclusion criteria. In essence, the needle target point was the "safe triangle," but if there was a possibility that the needle could penetrate the nerve root or that the injectate could contact spinal nerve, posterolateral TFESI was used as an alternative. Image analyses of needle positions and chart reviews were performed. Logistic regression analysis and t test were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS Of the 108 patients, 75 (69.4%) showed an improvement at 2 weeks after TFESI. In 46 patients (42.6%), the needle was located in the posterolateral epidural space, and 33 (71.7%) of those experienced pain relief. Of the 62 patients in whom the needle was located in the anterior epidural position, 42 (68%) experienced pain relief. There was a significant reduction in pain sense for the posterolateral approach (P < .05). However, no statistical difference was found between the 2 approaches and temporary diagnostic relief, and no correlation was found between the other variables tested and temporary diagnostic relief (P > .05). CONCLUSION Our findings suggest that the posterolateral approach is an alternative method for TFESI in cases where needle tip positioning in the anterior epidural space is difficult.

Abstract
To assess the organochlorine contamination in the Korean marine environment, a nationwide monitoring study was conducted. A total of 138 surface sediments, covering the whole Korean coast, were collected and analyzed. Organochlorine compounds (OCs) were widely distributed in the Korean coastal environment, with PCB and DDT contamination being particularly prevalent. The overall concentrations of PCBs, DDTs, HCHs, CHLs, and HCB in surface sediments were in the range of 0.088-199ngg(-1) (median value: 1.56ngg(-1)), 0.006-135ngg(-1) (0.68ngg(-1)), not detected (ND)-5.46ngg(-1) (0.32ngg(-1)), ND-3.26ngg(-1) (0.14ngg(-1)), and ND-2.59ngg(-1) (0.05ngg(-1)), respectively. The southeastern coast was found to be highly contaminated. Overall contamination status of Korean coastal sediments with regard to OCs is lower than that of USA. With the exception of highly industrialized sites, Korean coastal areas in general showed similar OC concentrations to those of other Asian countries. There was a significant correlation between distributions of most organochlorine contaminants with each other. OC contamination is closely related to shipping and industrial activities. Of the 7 sites categorized as highly polluted, 4 are in a harbor zone. Adverse effects to benthic communities are expected at the levels of OC contamination observed from harbor and industrial areas.

Abstract
Jeongshintang (JST) is a Korean herbal prescription, which has been successfully used for cerebral diseases. However, the anti-inflammatory effect of JST on Alzheimer's disease (AD) is still not fully understood. In this study, we investigated the effects of JST in attenuating the inflammatory response induced by interleukin (IL)-1beta plus beta-amyloid [1-42] fragment (A beta) in the human astrocyte cell line, U373MG. The production of IL-6, IL-8, and prostaglandin (PG)E2 was significantly increased by IL-1beta plus A beta (1-42) in a time-dependent manner (P < 0.05). JST significantly inhibited the IL-1beta plus A beta (1-42)-induced IL-6, IL-8, and PGE2 production at 24 h (P < 0.05). Maximal inhibition rate of IL-6, IL-8, and PGE2 production by JST was about 54.40%, 56.01%, and 44.06% respectively. JST (0.01-1 mg/ml) also attenuated the expression of cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 and activation of p38 MAPK induced by IL-1beta and A beta (1-42). These results demonstrated that JST has an anti-inflammatory effect, which might explain its beneficial effect in the treatment of various neurodegenerative diseases such as AD.

Abstract
Mesoporous carbons (MCs) with a high surface area (up to 900 m2/g), large pore volume (up to 2.1 cm3/g), high mesopore ratio (94%), and high yield (70%) were successfully prepared from an AR mesophase pitch, using a commercially nanosized silica template. The removal of the template provided some larger mesopores of 25-50 nm (pore I) with a surface area of ca. 300 m2/g, while the successive carbonization opened the closed pores within the carbon body to give smaller mesopores of 2-10 nm (pore II) with a similar surface area. During the carbonization of pitch precursor, the evaporation of volatile components swells the carbon to introduce the second mesopores among the domains and even microdomain units because of their rearrangements and overlappings in the process. The addition of iron salt with the silica template resulted in a remarkable increase of the surface area (ca. 300 m2/g) by introducing mesopores of 3-5 nm. The resultant MCs maintained some graphitizable natures derived from the anisotropic precursor. Their graphitization at 2400 degrees C provided the graphitic structure with large surface areas (270-460 m2/g) and mesoporosity.

Abstract
N-acetylphytosphingosine (NAPS), a sphingolipid derivative, is one of the well-known signal molecules that mediates various cellular functions, including cell growth, differentiation, and apoptosis. In this study, we demonstrated that NAPS induces apoptosis of Jurkat cells by activating Bak, but not Bax, which are both members of a proapoptotic subfamily of the Bcl-2 proteins. NAPS activated caspase-8 in a FADD-independent manner, but the lack of caspase-8 did not suppress the activation of caspase-3 and -9 and cell death, indicating that caspase-8 activation does not play an important role in NAPS-induced cell death. The overexpression of Bcl-xL, an anti-apoptotic protein, completely inhibited the activation of the caspases and apoptosis, assuming that NAPS-induced apoptosis was initiated by the mitochondria. The expression levels of pro- and anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 family members were not changed by the NAPS treatment. However, Bad was translocated from the cytosol into the mitochondria, where it bound to Bcl-xL, and Bak was dissociated from Bcl-xL and conformationally changed. Taken together, these findings indicate that NAPS induced apoptosis of Jurkat cells in a mitochondria-dependent manner that was controlled by the translocation of Bad and the conformational change in Bak.

Abstract
The authors describe a Korean family with X-linked recessive Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) having deafness and optic neuropathy. An X chromosome-wide linkage analysis identified a 15.2-cM candidate region flanked by DXS990 and DXS8067 on Xq21.32-q24 with the maximum lod score at DXS8077 (3.62, theta = 0.00). This locus does not overlap previously identified four loci for X-linked CMT, and the authors propose it as CMTX5.

Abstract
Areas of the Korean coastline with heavy industry and major harbors were investigated for polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) pollution. This investigation paid attention to variations in the PCB congener patterns for a possible source of contamination. Surface sediments from 49 sites were sampled. Although the occurrence of PCBs in coastal marine environment correlates well with shipping and industrial activities, the contribution from shipping activities is considerable because of its enormous economical importance in Korea. The highest concentrations were found in harbors with heavy ship traffic and ship construction. Principal component analysis (PCA) of congener-specific composition of PCBs revealed distinct regional patterns, especially in a harbor and steel manufacturing area. PCB signatures with enhanced higher chlorinated congeners were typical for harbors with shipping activities and correlated well with commercial formulations that were formerly used in ship painting. Lower chlorinated congeners with up to five chlorines were significantly abundant in steel works zones which differed from harbor zones. This distinction was consistent with the congener patterns in the ambient air and the effluent of the steel works as well as in the nearby surface sediments. This study identified steel manufacturing as a recent and ongoing emission source of PCBs in Korea's coastal zone.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES The objectives of this study were to determine whether patients would be willing to pay for pharmacist self-care services on proper use of over-the-counter medications. In addition, we examined whether patients' willingness to pay was associated with community pharmacy setting and patients' socio-economic factors. METHODS A self-administered questionnaire was handed out to patrons of community pharmacies in Arkansas, USA. The questionnaire contained question items related to patients' willingness to pay, community pharmacy setting, prescription drug insurance and socio-economic information. Patients' willingness to pay was measured using the checklist method. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION A total of 262 questionnaires were completed. More than twice as many patients (51%) are now willing to pay for pharmacist services for patient self care than a decade ago. They were willing to pay about US5 dollars for a 5-min consultation. Willingness to pay was significantly associated with community pharmacy setting (chi-square, P = 0.030). Grocery/chain pharmacy patrons were more willing to pay than independent pharmacy patrons. CONCLUSION This increased patient willingness to pay, along with growing self-care markets, provides pharmacists with opportunities to develop self-care clinics or services.

Abstract
Carbon-nanotube-reinforced Cu matrix nanocomposites have been fabricated by molecular-level mixing of functionalized carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with Cu ions, followed by spark plasma sintering. The compressive strengths and Young's moduli of CNT-reinforced nanocomposites are considerably higher than those of the Cu matrix due to the homogeneously dispersed CNTs embedded in the Cu matrix.

Abstract
Organochlorine contaminants in the muscles of sport and market fish were determined to understand the potential risks to humans consuming fish originating in Korea's coastal waters. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs; sum of 22 congeners) and DDTs were the dominant contaminants, and their concentrations were in the range of 2.96 to 96.6 and 0.84 to 27.0 ng/g (wet weight basis), respectively. The highest PCB concentrations were found in samples taken from an industrial complex. Hexachlorocyclohexanes, chlordane-related compounds, and hexachlorobenzene concentrations were relatively low and ranged from 0.64 to 5.6, 0.17 to 4.24, and 0.08 to 1.58, respectively. Sport fish had levels of PCBs and DDTs approximately two times higher than market fish, implying that sport fish posed high potential risk of contamination with OCs. Risk-based screening value (SV) based on U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) method was calculated using the USEPA approach to identify the primary chemicals of concern. Total PCB concentrations in all sport and market fish exceeded the SV (5.04 ng/g based on total PCBs), but the other compounds were mostly below SV values. Based on the estimated SVs, PCB compounds were identified as potential chemicals of concern.
