Abstract
BACKGROUND Experimental studies in rodents suggest that polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) may contribute to depressive symptoms. Few studies have examined the impact of these chemicals on depression in adults. OBJECTIVE To examine the associations between serum PBDE and PFAS concentrations during pregnancy and repeated measures of depressive symptoms in women assessed from pregnancy to 8 years postpartum. METHODS This study was based on 377 women from the Health Outcomes and Measures of the Environment Study, a birth cohort in Cincinnati, OH (USA). PBDEs (BDE-28, -47, -99, -100, -153, and ∑PBDEs) and PFAS (perfluorooctanoate [PFOA], perfluorooctane sulfonate [PFOS], perfluorohexane sulfonate [PFHxS], perfluorononanoate [PFNA]) were quantified in maternal serum at 16 ± 3 weeks gestation. Depressive symptoms were measured using the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) at ~20 weeks gestation and up to seven times during postpartum visits (4 weeks, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 8 years). We used linear mixed models to estimate covariate-adjusted associations between chemical concentrations and repeated measures of BDI-II. Multinomial logistic regression models were used to estimate the relative risk ratios of having a medium or high depression trajectory. RESULTS We found that a 10-fold increase in BDE-28 at 16 ± 3 weeks gestation was associated with significantly increased BDI-II scores (β = 2.5 points, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.8, 4.2) from pregnancy to 8 years postpartum. Significant positive associations were also observed with BDE-47, -100, -153, and ∑PBDEs. A 10-fold increase in ∑PBDEs was associated with a 4.6-fold increased risk (95% CI 1.8, 11.8) of a high trajectory for BDI-II compared to a low trajectory. We observed no significant associations between PFAS and BDI-II scores. CONCLUSION PBDEs during pregnancy were associated with more depressive symptoms among women in this cohort.

Abstract
Typical halogenated persistent organic pollutants (Hal-POPs), including polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), are a group of ubiquitous organic pollutants with an endocrine disrupting effect. This study evaluated the accumulation and congener profiles of Hal-POPs in the bodies of men who live/work in areas of South China where electronic wastes are collected and managed, especially in their semen samples. The results show that the detection frequency and serum concentrations of Hal-POP congeners within the high-exposure group (HEG) were higher than those of the low-exposure group (LEG). Furthermore, an identical trend was observed for the seminal plasma concentrations of Hal-POPs. The distribution characteristics, such as their mean, median, and discrete values, of PBDE congeners in serum and semen samples from the same subjects were consistent with each other. However, the distribution characteristics of PCB congeners in serum samples were different from those in semen samples. BDE153 was one of the most abundant congeners found in the serum and semen samples; hence, it can be identified as an indicator PBDE congener. Further research is needed to explore the mechanism of Hal-POPs distribution in human semen and serum samples.

Abstract
The accumulation and transformation of 2,2',4,4'-tetrabrominated diphenyl ether (BDE47), one congener of the flame retardants polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), in soil-feeding fauna are still unknown. Using radioactivity tracer, we incubated 14C-labelled BDE47 in soil for 21 days in the presence and absence of the geophagous earthworm Metaphire vulgaris. BDE47 accumulated in the earthworm predominantly via oral ingestion of soil, giving a biota-soil accumulation factor (BSAF) value of 1.3 for radioactivity at the end of incubation, and was mostly located in intestine, followed by clitellum (organs region) and skin of earthworms. Accumulation was accompanied by significant decrease of BDE47 concentration in soil porewater and BDE47 mineralization in soil. BDE47 was transformed in the earthworm gut into two metabolites with higher polarities than BDE47. The results provide for the first time insights into accumulation and transformation of lower-brominated congeners of PBDEs in geophagous earthworms, being helpful for environmental risk assessment of PBDEs.

Abstract
In this study, measurements of seven typical polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in indoor settled dust were summarized in selected urban regions of China. BDE-209 was the most dominant congener in settled dust (1.4-101 μg/g), with a mean contribution of 95%. Indoor exposures to PBDEs were estimated via inhalation, dust ingestion, and dermal absorption. The average daily intake of ΣPBDE was 4.9 to 19.1 ng/day/kg for all the population groups, with >80% of the total exposures from dust ingestion. Exposures in commuting environments (contributing 60%-80% of the total exposures) were higher than those in other microenvironments. The means of hazard indexes ranged from 1.66 × 10-3 to 5.26 × 10-3, which were mainly as a result of exposure to BDE-209, BDE-47, and BDE-99. The average lifetime cancer risks were from 0.03 × 10-9 to 2.37 × 10-9, which indicated the acceptable health risks resulting from indoor PBDE exposure for the Chinese population. The present study could provide valuable information that could be helpful for decision-makers, analysts and researchers to develop, implement and evaluate the effectiveness of interventions for the reduction of exposures to semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) for large population groups in China.

Abstract
Widespread polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs) contamination occurred in Michigan from 1973 to 1974, when PBBs were accidentally substituted for a nutritional supplement in livestock feed. People who lived in the state were exposed to PBBs via several routes including ingestion, inhalation and skin absorption. PBBs sequestered in lipid-rich matrices such as adipose tissue, are slowly eliminated after entering the human body, and can also be transferred from a mother to her offspring through the placenta and breastfeeding. Due to the long biological half-lives of PBBs, as well as concerns from the exposed community, biomonitoring measurements were conducted from 2012 to 2015. Because of their similar structures, serum PBBs, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were all measured 40 years after the PBB contamination incident (N = 862). The serum PBB-153 levels among the original highly-exposed groups (i.e., chemical workers, the family of chemical workers, and individuals who lived on or received food from the contaminated farms) remains significantly higher than other Michigan residents. Several predictors such as sampling age, sex, and smoking status were significantly associated with the serum levels of some persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Higher average values and also wider ranges of serum POP levels were found in this study compared to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), with the most substantial difference in serum PBB-153. This was true for all groups of Michigan residents including those who were not part of the above-described highly-exposed groups. Moreover, the people born after the contamination incident began also have higher serum PBB-153 levels when compared with more recent NHANES data (2010-2014), which suggests potential intergenerational exposure and/or continued environmental exposure following the contamination period.

Abstract
The concentrations of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in sediments from the Eastern Indian Ocean were analyzed by GC-MS/MS to explore the status of contamination, distribution and their potential sources and risk. The average (±SD) concentrations of total polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (∑16PAHs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (∑10PBDEs), dechlorane plus (∑2DP), organochlorine pesticides (∑22OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (∑31PCBs) in sediments were 79,900 ± 31,400, 173 ± 62, 42 ± 24, 1051 ± 305 and 147 ± 24 pg g-1 dw (or 11,200 ± 7200, 28 ± 26, 6 ± 6, 168 ± 121 and 24 ± 17 ng g-1 organic carbon), respectively. The concentrations of POPs in sediments were generally at low to median levels compared to those recorded in other ocean sediments. Composition analyses suggest that PAHs originate from both petrogenic and pyrogenic sources, while dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) mainly comes from technical-DDT, hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) from lindane, and chlordane from fresh inputs. The risk assessments show that the targeted chemicals except for chlordane and naphthalene in sediments do not pose potential biological effects to the organisms in the Eastern Indian Ocean. The present study contributes to the very rare data on PAHs, PBDEs, DP, OCPs and PCBs in the vast deep-ocean and will deepen our knowledge of the fate of POPs in ocean environments.

Abstract
Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), previously commonly used as flame retardants, should be monitored in the environment since some are listed as persistent organic pollutants. A contaminated site near a northern Taiwan factory using decabrominated diphenyl ether (deca-BDE) was identified based on a vegetable PBDEs monitoring project in 2013. The subsequent spatial and temporal survey of that contaminated site shows the contamination ingredients in soils were close to ones used by the factory, indicating that contamination was from the factory, possibly through an exhaust vent. The average concentration of deca-BDE in the main contaminated soil was 615 μg/kg d. w. (dry weight) soil in 2015, slightly decreasing to 604 μg/kg d. w. soil in 2016, increasing to 844 μg/kg d. w. soil in 2017, and then slightly decreasing to 670 μg/kg d. w. soil in 2018. The slight change of deca-BDE and the minor change in low brominated congener level indicate a low degradation rate. The contamination of peripheral sites was around 5000 μg/kg d. w. soil for one PBDEs sampling site that was higher than those around or within the main contaminated farm, indicating serious pollution. Concentrations of PBDEs in different soil depths show that depth 2-15 cm accounted for the greatest PBDEs accumulation, indicating that deca-BDE pollution had been present over time and transported into deeper soil. There can be PBDEs uptake by crops consumed by humans, as shown in our previous studies, so continuous monitoring of PBDEs in this site is important and treatments should be established urgently.

Abstract
Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are one of the persistent toxic organic pollutants in watersheds near electrical and electronic waste (e-waste) sites (EWS). Spatial redistribution, translocation and bioaccumulation of PBDEs in natural sediment-plant ecosystems, however, are still unclear. The contamination and distribution of PBDEs in core sediments and wetland plants from two EWS and two mangrove forest sites (MFS) were investigated. The eight PBDE congeners were all detected in plant tissue and sediment samples, indicating PBDE contamination was common and severe, and their spatial variations were significant. Although sediments from EWS had higher PBDE concentrations than those in MFS, with an extremely high value of 36392 ± 5992 ng g-1 dw, mangroves could be the sink of PBDEs, as high concentrations (327 ± 48 ng g-1 dw) were also detected in mangrove sediments. The historical usage of PBDEs was reflected by their distribution in mangrove sediment core but not so in e-waste sediment core. PBDEs were taken up and accumulated in six wetland plants, with more accumulation in mangrove plants. These results demonstrated that PBDEs were not only contaminated in sediments adjacent to e-waste sites but also plant tissues. PBDEs could enter other environments via plant littering and/or herbivorous processes that must not be neglected.

Abstract
Coastal areas are influenced by anthropogenic input of a variety of organic pollutants, among which polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) represent an important group. In the present study, we investigated the contamination status of PBDEs in surface sediment from two economically important Bays in Southeast China, Sanmen Bay (SMB; n = 29) and Xiamen Bay (XMB; n = 10). Concentrations of ∑PBDEs ranged from 2.2 to 78.5 ng/g dw (median 5.7 ng/g dw) in SMB and 7.9-276.0 ng/g dw (median 43.5 ng/g dw) in XMB, respectively. A nearshore-offshore decreasing trend was observed for both ∑PBDEs and BDE-209 concentrations, indicating strong urban influences. Although the current levels would not produce any significant impact on benthos and aquatic ecosystems of the studied regions, continuous monitoring is needed to understand the temporal trends of contamination in the important coastal waters and whether sediment-associated PBDEs constitute a potential source to aquatic ecosystems.

Abstract
Thyroid hormones are key hormones involved in growth and development. Changes in their levels can cause embryonic brain developmental damage in the first trimester. Studies have shown that polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) have developmental neurotoxicity as environmental pollutants, and exposure during pregnancy can cause irreversible brain damage in offspring, similar to the interference effects of thyroid hormones, but its mechanism has not yet been understood. Since the physiological environment for placental cells is highly hypoxic, in the current study, the human placenta-derived JEG cells were cultured at 1% oxygen, 4% carbon dioxide and 94% nitrogen, to reflect in vivo scenario, and the possible protection of taurine on BDE 209-mediated toxicity in JEG cells was studied. Our data showed that different concentrations of BDE 209 can have profound effects on cell viability and placental deiodinase 3 expression under hypoxic culture condition. Taurine was found to improve BDE 209-induced reductions in cell viability and altered gene and protein expressions of placental deiodinases. The results provide a reference for the establishment of early biomarkers and effective preventive measures.

Abstract
PBDEs (stands for polybrominated diphenyl ethers) are extensively utilized flame retardants, and BDE 209 is one of the most widely used congeners. Studies have suggested the general toxic effects of PBDEs on the endocrine system and neural development. Our previous studies found that BDE 209 changed Type 3 iodothyronine deiodinase (Dio 3) expression in human SK-N-AS neuroblastoma cells. The current study was designed to examine the potential protection of taurine on alterations of Dio 3 expression induced by BDE 209 in SK-N-AS cells. Briefly, SK-N-AS cells were pretreated with taurine prior to the BDE 209 treatment, and the cell viability was evaluated by the MTT (methyl-thiazolyl-tetrazolium) assay. The disturbance or restoration in the levels of Dio 3 proteins and mRNA were observed separately by the western blot and qRT-PCR. Our data showed that taurine moderately attenuated BDE 209-mediated the loss of cell viability. Also, taurine moderately prevented the reduction in the Dio 3 protein expression and mRNA expression induced by BDE 209 in the SK-N-AS cells. Our findings indicated that taurine potentially provide the protection on PBDEs-induced toxicity on endocrine and neuro-development.

Abstract
Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are widely used as flame retardants and challenges for water treatment due to their persistence and toxicity. In this study, the reduction of 2'2'4'4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47) was investigated in a nano-bio-integrated system. Results showed that the introducing of P. putida could markedly accelerate the demineralization of BDE-47 in nZVI/Pd-P.p system; the continuous generation of acidic metaboliates by P. putida could decrease pH, which could alleviate the surface passivation to some extent, resulting in the releasing of Fe2+ and high generation of H2O2, the shift in reactive oxygen species from Fe(IV) to •OH. The BDE-47 was firstly debrominated to the DE by the highly reductive [Pd·2H] generated by nZVI/Pd, then oxidized to bromophenol and phenol, catechol as well as hydroquinone via the P. putida strain and the Fenton-like system. The toxicity assays confirmed the combined system could avert generation of nocuous intermediates, and could be an alternative strategy for complete remediation of recalcitrant POPs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Puerto Rico has over 200 hazardous waste sites, as well as higher rates of several adverse health outcomes compared to the mainland US. In response to concerns of potential links between environmental contaminant exposure and preterm birth, the Puerto Rico Testsite for Exploring Contamination Threats (PROTECT) birth cohort was formed. Biomarkers of exposure for several contaminants have been found to be elevated in this cohort compared to women of child-bearing age in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). However, exposure to persistent organic pollutants (POPs) has not been evaluated. METHODS In this preliminary analysis, we measured four classes of POPs, including perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and several persistent pesticides in serum samples collected at 16-20 weeks gestation from the first 48 women enrolled in PROTECT. We performed descriptive analyses for each analyte, assessed correlations between analytes using Spearman correlations, and compared serum levels in PROTECT women to levels in NHANES women aged 18-40. RESULTS Several PFASs were detected in 96-100% of samples, with moderate to strong correlations between most PFASs (range r = 0.44-0.88). BDE47, BDE153, PCB 138-158, PCB153 and p,p'-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethene (p,p'-DDE) were detected in the majority of samples, with strong correlations between PCBs and p,p'-DDE (range r = 0.59-0.74). The median concentration for each analyte was lower than, sometimes by a factor of 4 (e.g. BDE47, p,p'-DDE), the median concentration reported in NHANES women aged 18-40. CONCLUSION Although participants in the ongoing PROTECT birth cohort have higher exposure to many environmental contaminants, this preliminary study suggests that they have lower exposure to several POPS, specifically PCBs, OCPs, PFASs, and PBDEs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Animal studies suggest polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) may be obesogens. However, epidemiologic studies investigating childhood exposure to PBDEs and adiposity are limited, with several reporting an inverse association. OBJECTIVES To investigate associations between repeated childhood PBDE concentrations and adiposity measures at age 8 years. METHODS We examined 206 children from the Health Outcomes and Measures of the Environment Study, a birth cohort in Cincinnati, OH (2003-2006). Serum PBDEs were measured at ages 1, 2, 3, 5, and 8 years. We used multiple imputation to estimate missing PBDE concentrations. At 8 years, we measured weight, height, waist circumference, and body fat percentage. We used multiple informant models to estimate age-specific associations between PBDEs and adiposity measures. RESULTS We observed significant inverse associations between BDE-153 with all adiposity measures that became increasingly stronger with later childhood measurements. A 10-fold increase in BDE-153 at ages 1 and 8 years was associated with 2% (95% CI -3.9, -0.1) and 7% (95% CI -9.1, -4.7) lower body fat, respectively. No statistically significant associations were found with BDE-28, -47, -99, or -100. Child sex modified some associations; inverse associations between BDE-153 and body fat were stronger among boys, while positive and null associations were noted among girls. CONCLUSIONS Childhood BDE-153 concentrations were inversely associated with adiposity measures and these associations became stronger as BDE-153 measurements were more proximal to adiposity measures. Inverse associations could be attributed to reverse causality arising from greater storage of PBDEs in adipose tissue of children with higher adiposity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are major brominated flame retardant (BFR) chemicals with endocrine-disrupting properties. One small-scale study on humans has suggested that prenatal exposure to PBDEs is adversely related to anogenital distance (AGD) a sensitive marker for prenatal androgen exposure. The aim of the present study was to examine the associations between prenatal exposure to PBDEs and AGD among boys 0-4 years of age in a cohort study. METHODS In the Shanghai-Minhang Birth Cohort Study (S-MBCS), nine PBDE congeners were measured in cord plasma of 192 male infants. We measured anopenile distance (AGDAP) and anoscrotal distance (AGDAS) at birth, 6 months, 12 months, and 48 months of age. A total of 190 boys with neonatal concentrations of PBDEs (ng/g lipid) who had at-least one AGD measurement were included in our study. Information on potential confounding variables were collected through in-person interviews. Multiple linear regression models and generalized estimating equation (GEE) models were used to evaluate the associations between prenatal PBDEs concentrations and AGD. RESULTS Among the nine congeners, BDE-47 had the highest detection rate (83.68%) and the highest median concentration (0.18 ng/g lipid). Boys who had neonatal concentration of BDE-47 or Σ4PBDEs (sum of BDE-47, BDE-99, BDE-100, and BDE-153) in the higher quartile generally had shorter AGDAP and AGDAS than those in the first quartile. Significant inverse associations were found between AGDAS and fourth quartile BDE-47 levels among boys 12 months and 48 months of age (β = -5.57, 95% confidence interval (CI): -9.89, -1.25 for 12 month of age; β = -4.32, 95% CI: -8.18, -0.46 for 48 month of age). Inverse associations were also observed between AGDAS and fourth quartile Σ4PBDEs levels among boys 12 months of age (β = -5.13, 95% CI: -9.89, -1.25). In GEE models, similar patterns of association were also observed between BDE-47 and AGDAS. CONCLUSIONS Our findings provide preliminary evidence that prenatal exposure to BDE-47 and Σ4PBDEs, even at low environmental levels, may be associated with shorter AGD in boys. This data suggest that prenatal exposure to PBDEs may have adverse effects on male reproductive development. Further studies should be conducted to validate these results.

Abstract
Taurine is an important amino acid for the growth and development of the central nervous system and plays an important role in the development of the nervous system. Many studies have shown that taurine can prevent and repair neurodevelopmental damage, and its mechanism has also become a research hotspot. While most studies focus on nerve cells, less on placental cells that are closely related to early neurodevelopment (developmental neurotoxicity) by modulating fetal circulation level of thyroid hormones. Studies have shown that exposure of placental cells to the common environmental endocrine disruptor BDE 209 during early pregnancy may lead to developmental neurotoxicity due to thyroid hormone interference caused by abnormal expression of deiodinases. Therefore, in this study, the placenta-derived JEG cells cultured at 95% air/5% CO2 was used as a in vitro model, and the potential protection from taurine on BDE 209-mediated cytotoxicity was examined. When BDE 209 was found to cause a decrease in cell viability and disturbance in the gene and protein expressions of placental deiodinase 3, pretreatment of the JEG cells with taurine can moderately reduce the BDE 209-meditated cytotoxicity, and restore gene and protein expressions of placental deiodinase, so that thyroid hormone levels tend to be normal in cell culture medium. Our data suggest that taurine may have some protection on the developmental neurotoxicity caused by BDE 209.

Abstract
Concentrations, sources, and risk assessment of 16 organochlorinated pesticides (OCPs), seven polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and seven polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were determined in soils from Kiambu to Mombasa in Kenya. The total concentrations of OCPs ranged between 7.62 and 76.09 ng/g, dominated by HCHs. Source identification displayed recent inputs and historical use of DDTs and lindane. The total concentrations of PCBs ranged from 9.90 to 20.8 ng/g with an average of 14.40 ng/g dominated by penta-PCBs from old transformers leakages. The total PBDEs concentrations were in the range of 1.89-38.36 ng/g and with a mean of 11.38 ng/g. Electric and electronic equipment waste and PBDE containing materials as sources of PBDE. The risk assessment of OCPs and PCBs showed low potential human health risk from OCPs, while PCBs indicated to pose a high risk.

Abstract
Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are suspected to be associated with breast cancer risk because of their estrogenic potencies. Epidemiological studies of PBDEs and breast cancer are scarce. Our study aimed to estimate the association between adipose-tissue PBDE concentrations and breast cancer risk. A total of 209 breast cancer cases and 165 controls were recruited from hospitals between January 2014 and May 2016 in Shantou, Chaoshan area, China. Concentrations of 14 PBDE congeners were measured in adipose tissues obtained from the breast for cases and the abdomen/breast for controls during surgery. Demographic and clinicopathologic characteristics were obtained from medical records. Breast cancer risk as well as clinicopathologic characteristics were evaluated by adipose-tissue PBDE level. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) for breast cancer risk associated with levels of PBDE congeners were estimated from logistic regression models for all cases and stratified by estrogen receptor (ER) status. Level of total PBDEs (∑PBDE) and most individual PBDE congeners were higher in breast cancer cases than controls (median ∑PBDE, 94.99 vs 73.72 ng/g lipid). In the adjusted univariate model for all cases, breast cancer risk was increased with both 2nd and 3rd tertiles versus the 1st tertile of BDE-47 level (OR 2.05 [95% CI 1.08-3.92]; 5.47 [2.96-10.11]) and BDE-209 level (2.48 [1.30-4.73]; 4.72 [2.52-8.83]) with trend (both P < 0.001) and with the 3rd tertile of BDE-28 level (2.83 [1.63-4.92]), BDE-99 (3.22 [1.85-5.60]), BDE-100 (5.45 [2.90-10.23]), BDE-138 (2.40 [1.37-4.20]), BDE-153 (1.74 [1.02-2.97]), BDE-154 (1.84 [1.05-3.22]), and ∑PBDE levels (1.83 [1.07-3.14]) but decreased with the 3rd tertile of BDE-71 level (0.38 [0.22-0.65]) with trend (all P < 0.01). After stratifying by ER-positive or -negative status, the adjusted results were similar for ER-positive patients except for BDE-153 and BDE-154, with no statistical significance. In the multivariate model for all cases, age, menarche age, BDE-47, 71, 99, 100, 183 and 209 were independent factors associated with breast-cancer risk. ∑PBDE and most individual PBDE congeners investigated were positively associated with breast cancer risk in women from the Chaoshan area, China. PBDE may play a role in the occurrence and development of breast cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) reduce serum thyroid hormone concentrations in animal studies, but few studies have examined the impact of early-life PBDE exposures on thyroid hormone disruption in childhood. METHODS We used data from 162 mother-child pairs from the Health Outcomes and Measures of the Environment Study (2003-2006, Cincinnati, OH). We measured PBDEs in maternal serum at 16 ± 3 weeks gestation and in child serum at 1-3 years. Thyroid hormones were measured in serum at 3 years. We used multiple informant models to investigate associations between prenatal and early-life PBDE exposures and thyroid hormone levels at age 3 years. RESULTS Prenatal PBDEs were associated with decreased thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) levels at age 3 years. A 10-fold increase in prenatal ∑PBDEs (BDE-28, -47, -99, -100, and -153) was associated with a 27.6% decrease (95% CI -40.8%, -11.3%) in TSH. A ten-fold increase in prenatal ∑PBDEs was associated with a 0.25 pg/mL (0.07, 0.43) increase in free triiodothyronine (FT3). Child sex modified associations between prenatal PBDEs and thyroid hormones, with significant decrements in TSH among females and decreased free T4 (FT4) in males. Prenatal ∑PBDEs were not associated with TT4, FT4, or total T3. CONCLUSIONS These findings suggest an inverse relationship between prenatal ∑PBDEs and TSH at 3 years. Associations may be sexually dimorphic, with an inverse relationship between prenatal BDE-47 and -99 and TSH in females and null associations among males.

Abstract
Narragansett Bay is a temperate estuary on the Atlantic coast of Rhode Island in the north-eastern United States, which receives organic pollutants from urban and industrial activities in its watershed, though detailed knowledge on sources and fluxes is missing. Twenty-four polyethylene passive samplers were deployed in the surface water of the watershed around Narragansett Bay during June-July of 2014, to examine the spatial variability and possible sources of priority pollutants, namely dissolved polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). Dissolved ∑22PAH concentrations ranged from 3.6 to 340 ng L-1, and from 2.9 to 220 pg L-1 for ∑12PBDE. The spatial variability of the concentrations was correlated to land use pattern and population distribution, in particular with human activities within 2 km of sampling sites. River discharges derived from the concentrations of PAHs and PBDEs measured here were 10-20 times greater than their previously measured concentrations in the open waters of Narragansett Bay. These results imply that river waters are the main source of PAHs and PDBEs to the Bay and that major sink terms (e.g., sedimentation, degradation) affect their concentrations in the estuary. Predicted PAH and PBDE toxicity based on dissolved concentrations did not exceed 1 toxic unit, suggested that no toxicity occurred at the sampling sites.

Abstract
House dust is the main source of human exposure to flame retardants by ingestion. This study investigated the occurrence of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in indoor dust from 22 houses in Shanghai, China. House dust was separately collected from the floor and elevated furnishings surface (mostly between 0.5 and 2 m height) for comparison. The concentrations of ∑22 PBDEs ranged from 19.4 to 3280 ng/g (with a geometric mean of 203 ng/g) and from 55.1 to 792 ng/g (with a geometric mean of 166 ng/g) in floor dust (FD) and elevated surface dust (ESD), respectively. BDE-209 was the predominant congener, accounting for about 73.1% of total PBDE burdens. In terms of congener profiles, the comparison of FD and ESD revealed no significant differences except for the ratio of BDE-47/BDE-99. ESD samples displayed a ratio of BDE-47/BDE-99 very similar to commercial penta-BDE products DE-71 while the ratio in FD was exceptionally higher. Significant correlation was found between concentrations of commercial penta-BDE compositions in FD and ESD (p < 0.05). Except for some occasional values, PBDE levels in house dust exhibited temporal stability. Human exposure to PBDEs via dust ingestion was estimated. The highest daily intake of PBDEs was for toddlers by using 95th percentile concentrations of PBDEs via high dust ingestion in FD (23.07 ng/kg bw/day). About 20-fold difference in exposure estimates between toddlers and adults supports that toddlers are facing greater risk from indoor floor dust. Expectedly, this study highlighted the point that residents in Shanghai were exposed to low doses of PBDEs in house dust.

Abstract
Previous studies have confirmed that house dust is one of the main sources of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) exposure, and also indicated that PBDEs might affect human semen quality. The aim of this study was to explore the association between PBDEs concentration in house dust and the semen quality of male resident. Results showed that the semen qualities of the residents living around the e-waste dismantling workshops for a long time (3-17years) at the e-waste areas in South China significantly decreased, and the DNA damage of sperms were aggravated. The adjusted correlation analysed by multiple linear regression model showed that the sperm concentration and count both had negative correlation with BDE47 level in semen (β = -0.295, 95%CI: -0.553∼-0.036; β = -0.400, 95%CI: -0.708∼-0.092, respectively). In addition, the sperm progressive motility [(A+B)%] and sperm viability both had negative correlation with BDE100 level in dust (β = -0.360, 95%CI: -0.680∼-0.040; β = -0.114, 95% CI: -0.203∼-0.025, respectively). And there were significant linear positive correlation between PBDE congener (e.g. BDE28, 47, 153) concentrations in dust and in paired semen samples (rs = 0.367-0.547, p < 0.05). This study suggested that exposure to PBDEs from house dust might have adverse effects on human semen quality. But the results need to be confirmed in further studies with a large-scale sampling, and find out more direct and convincing evidence.

Abstract
This study investigates the congener-specific concentrations of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/furans (PCDD/Fs), polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins/furans (PBDD/Fs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in 25 breast milk samples from southern Taiwan. Most investigated congeners in Taiwanese breast milk are detectable except for PBDD/Fs. The geometric means of PCDD/Fs and PBDEs in the breast milk are 2.44 pg WHO2005-TEQ/g lipid and 2810 pg/g lipid. Several PCDD/F and PBDE congeners were highly correlated to each other like 1,2,3,7,8-PeCDD and 2,3,4,7,8-PeCDF (r = 0.919, p < 0.001). The longest duration of menstruation could be predicted by BDE-153 (β = 0.252) and 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-HpCDF (β = 0.345) with adjustment of confounders using a multiple stepwise linear regression model (r = 0.963, p < 0.001).

Abstract
Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are brominated flame retardants. Technical mixtures PentaBDE and OctaBDE were phased out in 2004 through voluntary and regulatory actions with DecaBDE remaining in limited use until 2013. Biomonitoring studies have shown widespread presence of PBDEs in the US and worldwide population. While some studies suggest that human serum concentrations are declining over time, it is unclear whether this trend will continue. Our objective was to examine temporal trends of PentaBDEs and their hydroxylated metabolites (OH-PBDEs) between 2008 and 2014 in populations of ethnically diverse, pregnant women residing in Northern California (n = 111). Serum samples were collected and analyzed by high resolution mass spectrometry for five PentaBDE congeners and two OH-PBDEs. We found widespread exposures in participants from all three time points (2008/09, 2011/12, 2014). Temporal patterns varied substantially by congener. BDE-47, -99 and the OH-PBDEs decreased between 2008/09-2011/12 but plateaued between 2011/12-2014. In contrast, BDE-100 decreased across all years, BDE-153 decreased in the latter years, and BDE-28 decreased initially and then increased. These findings indicate that while policies to remove PBDEs from the marketplace have successfully lead to declines in exposures to some PBDE congeners, human exposures to these legacy pollutants could plateau and remain ubiquitous in human populations.

Abstract
Fat obtained by wipe tests on the inner surface of 21 baking ovens from Stuttgart (Germany) were analyzed for halogenated flame retardants (HFRs), namely polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE), dechlorane plus (DP), short- and medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs, MCCPs), as well as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). In ~50% of the samples chlorinated paraffins (CPs) were present in the mg/g fat range, i.e. three to four orders of magnitude higher concentrated than the sum of all other target compounds. In contrast the remaining ~50% of the samples were free of CPs, while the other HFRs were comparable in CP-positive and CP-negative samples. The exceptionally high concentrations and exclusive presence of CPs in half of the samples produced strong evidence that these compounds were released from the baking oven itself. This hypothesis was supported by detection of MCCPs at even higher concentrations in the inner components of one dismantled baking oven. The release of substantial amounts of HFRs from the oven casing during its use may contribute to human exposure to these compounds, especially MCCPs and SCCPs.
