Abstract
Fifty-five dogs, naturally infected with Taenia sp or Dipylidium caninum or both, were assigned to the following treatment groups for dose titration studies with epsiprantel: nonmedicated control dogs (n = 14), medicated dogs given a dosage of 2.75 mg/kg of body weight (n = 15), medicated dogs given a dosage of 5.5 mg/kg (n = 16), and medicated dogs given a dosage of 8.25 mg/kg (n = 10). Medication was given orally in a tablet formulation. Feces were examined for cestodes passed and the gastrointestinal tract was examined at necropsy for retained cestodes. Efficacy of epsiprantel was 92.9% against Taenia and 44.8% against Dipylidium for a dosage of 2.75 mg/kg, 100% against Taenia and 99.8% against Dipylidium for a dosage of 5.5 mg/kg, and 94.6% against Taenia and 100% against Dipylidium for a dosage of 8.25 mg/kg. For dose confirmation, 36 dogs naturally infected with Taenia sp or D caninum or both were allotted to 2 treatment groups: nonmedicated control dogs (n = 16) and dogs medicated with epsiprantel at a dosage of 5.5 mg/kg (n = 20). Efficacy was 100% for both Taenia sp and D caninum.

Abstract
The data demonstrating the presence of the glucose active transport system in the cestode T. nodulosus are obtained. Kinetic characteristics of the transport are estimated and their dependence on the incubation temperature are shown. Heterogeneity of the worm body in respect to transport processes and their dependence on the physiological state of cestodes are discovered. The absorption of different forms of glucose is studied and the similarity of digestion processes in parasites and their hosts is shown.

Abstract
A total of 59 equids (54 horses and five Shetland ponies) were treated with pyrantel pamoate once, at the dose rate of approximately 6.6 mg base kg-1, during the period November 1985-January 1988. The drug was administered as a paste formulation (51 equids) intraorally or as a suspension formulation by stomach tube (eight equids). The purpose of treatment was to evaluate the activity of pyrantel pamoate (at the therapeutic dose rate) for removal of the tapeworm, Anoplocephala perfoliata, by a modified (24-h) critical test. The presence or absence of tapeworms was not determined for the equids before treatment. Twenty-three (39%) of the 59 treated equids were found to be infected with A. perfoliata (from one to 180 specimens per infected equid) at necropsy. Removals varied from 67 to 100% (average 88%) for the 18 infected equids treated with the paste formulation. For the five infected equids treated with the suspension, removals were 58-100% (average 75%). The combined average removal of A. perfoliata for both formulations was 87%. Two abnormal (triradiate) specimens of A. perfoliata were recovered; one from each of two different equids.

Abstract
Praziquantel was tested against mature (17-day-old) and immature (7-day-old) Raillietina tetragona in experimentally infected chickens using single oral doses of 10, 7.5, 5, or 2.5 mg/kg body wt. The compound showed potent anticestodal activity, with 100% efficacy at 10, 7.5, and 5 mg/kg against immature worms and an efficacy of 100% 97.1%, and 95% against mature worms when given at 10, 5, and 2.5 mg/kg, respectively. Residual worms surviving drug treatment had less biomass than the controls. Praziquantel appears to be well tolerated by chickens, and treated birds showed no clinical reactions at any of the doses tested.

Abstract
Histochemical reaction with glyoxylic acid has revealed a specific fluorescence caused by the presence of indolamine (apparently serotonin) in the nervous system of larva and mature cestode. Fluorescence manifests itself in neurons and nerve fibres of the central ganglion and its commissure, in nerve cells of the proboscis, in longitudinal trunks and transverse commissures, and in the nerve elements connected with genital system.

Abstract
The effect of the anthelmintic preparation fenasal on the fine structure of tegument of the cestode Caryophyllaeus laticeps, a parasite of Cyprinidae, was studied in vitro. 10 mcg/ml concentration of fenasal causes numerous evaginations of the external cytoplasmic layer in the scolex of helminth. Inside these formations there are granules of secretion, mitochondria, vacuoles. At the same time microtrichia disappear from the surface, cytoplasmic layer gets thinner and its mitochondria degenerate. In the middle part of the body the number of microtrichia decreases, the layer of tegumental cells swells and conformational condition of its mitochondria changes. The degree of injury depends on the exposition time which was from 0 to 4 hours.

Abstract
The efficacy of different dose rates of Praziquantel (Droncit R) in tablet and liquid (injectable) form against Raillietina tetragona in the domestic fowl was studied. A dose of 10 mg kg-1 of Praziquantel in tablet form and 0.15 ml kg-1 in liquid form was found to be effective against R. tetragona infection irrespective of age, sex and intensity of infestation of the host. Intramuscular (IM) administration of liquid Praziquantel was found to be more effective than subcutaneous (SC) administration. Susceptibility of the parasite to this drug increased with age.

Abstract
An investigation of differences in growth, maturation, biomass, and fecundity of Bothriocephalus acheilognathi in 3 host species was conducted on metapopulations from 3 distinct communities in Belews Lake, North Carolina. The results indicated that host-specific differences in growth and biomass were additive among metapopulations from different localities. However, species-specific differences in maturation and fecundity exhibited differential variation between the sites. These site X host interactions were related to host-specific differences in bioaccumulation of selenium at sites that were exposed to effluent from a coal-fired power plant. Significant (alpha = 0.001) statistical associations were observed between selenium concentration in tapeworm tissue and fecundity measures. The results of this study demonstrate that host suitability is determined by morphological, physiological, and behavioral differences in the host species which affect transmission dynamics and the quality and stability of the enteric environment.

Abstract
Mebendazole (3.3 mumol), causes in vitro glycogen depletion and inhibits glucose uptake in Avitellina lahorea. Inhibition of non-specific phosphomonoesterases and adenosine triphosphatase by mebendazole discussed in the light of the role of phosphatases in uptake mechanisms. Mebendazole has no effect on hexokinase which has broad substrate specificity but influences the activities of some glycolytic enzymes such as phosphorylase, phosphoglucomutase and glucose-6-phosphatase. Thus, it appears that mebendazole also acts to disrupt certain enzymes of carbohydrate metabolism which may ultimately cause death of the parasite.

Abstract
Determinations were made of the inhibitory activities of four benzimidazole anthelmintics (Albendazole, Parbendazole, Mebendazole and Thiabendazole) on purified extracts of cytoplasmic and mitochondrial malate dehydrogenase obtained from Ascaris suum, Fasciola hepatica and Moniezia expansa. The highest percentage inhibitions were exhibited by Mebendazole. The results confirm that cytoplasmic MDH and mitochondrial MDH regulator enzymes of glycogen synthesis are the sites of mebendazole inhibitory activity, but the activity sites of the other anthelmintics in the study remain unclear.

Abstract
A number of substituted diphenylsulfides and sulfones (4-11) and 2,2'-disubstituted-5,5'-dibenzimidazolyl sulfides and sulphones (12-19) have been synthesized starting from 5-chloro-2-nitroacetanilide and (3) 4,4'-dichlorodiphenyl sulfone (9), respectively. Among the compounds tested against Ancylostoma ceylanicum in hamsters and Hymenolepis nana in rats and mice, 14, 15, 18 and 19 removed 100% of the worms at an oral dose of 25 mg/kg X 1 to 250 mg/kg X 3. Some of the compounds were tested for their blood schizontocidal activity against Plasmodium berghei in mice but none showed any activity up to an oral dose of 10 mg/kg given for 6 days.

Abstract
Adult Bothriocephalus acheilognathi were incubated in solutions containing 0 (control), 0.1, 1.0, 10.0 and 100 micrograms praziquantel per ml (0, 10(2), 10(3), 10(4) and 10(5) micrograms l-1) of 0.9% saline for 5, 15 and 60 min at a temperature of 18 degrees C. The worms contracted immediately upon being placed in the drug. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy revealed considerable tegumental damage particularly in the neck region. Vacuolization and 'bubbling' of the tegument occurred in all of the drug solutions tested. Exposure to drug concentrations of more than 1.0 micrograms ml-1 (10(3) micrograms l-1) praziquantel for 15 min or greater resulted in many of the 'bubbles' bursting and releasing their contents to the exterior. Mature proglottides were distorted and had occasional large swellings resulting in the mass expulsion of eggs. Praziquantel had no ovicidal activity. Exposure to drug concentrations of 100 micrograms (10(5) micrograms l-1) praziquantel per ml saline for 24 h was not lethal to the worms.

Abstract
The maximum yield for the production of L-681,110 by Streptomyces sp. MA-5038 (ATCC 31587) was observed after 5 days' incubation at 28 degrees C and pH about 8.3. L-681,110 was isolated from the fermentation broth by acetone extraction of the mycelia, absorption to Amberlite XAD-2 resin and two separations by thin-layer chromatography. The structure of L-681,110 was found to consist of a sixteen-membered lactone with a new type of substitution. The inhibition of ATPase, activity against Caenorhabditis elegans and stimulation of gamma-aminobutyric acid release indicate that L-681,110 possesses some characteristics of both oligomycin and avermectin. L-681,110 was also active against tapeworm and ticks in an in vivo assay.

Abstract
Incorporation of 32Pi into organic phosphate by mitochondria of Cotugnia digonopora was supported maximally by malate. Fumarate and succinate induced lower but significant production of ATP. Pyruvate, alpha-ketoglutarate and oxalacetate proved to be poor substrates and citrate and isocitrate had no effect. A net phosphorylation of approximately 2 mol of ADP was observed for each mol of CO2 liberated from malate or succinate. In contrast, with pyruvate, in spite of a high rate of decarboxylation, the production of ATP was extremely low. 2,4-Dinitrophenol inhibited phosphorylation. All anthelmintics examined interfered with the mitochondrial phosphorylation of ADP, with maximum inhibition by salicylanilide compounds. The anticestodal activity of the latter group of compounds, niclosamide for example, may, therefore, be attributed to their ability to inhibit mitochondrial phosphorylation.

Abstract
Cotugnia digonopora consumes, in 24 hours, glucose equivalent to 38% of its body-weight and converts it into metabolites. The Krebs' cycle is insignificant in the breakdown of glucose because very little CO2 is formed. Ether-extractable acids account for most of the consumed sugar, confirming that metabolism is predominantly anaerobic. Glucose is assimilated as glycogen rather than as nucleic acids, lipids and proteins. Niclosamide, praziquantel and mebendazole strongly inhibit uptake of glucose by the parasite. A considerable increase in the production of lactic acid over that of ether-soluble and volatile acids under the influence of these drugs, suggests a change in the catabolism of sugar towards homolactate fermentation.
