Abstract
The effects of K+ and Na+ on the Ca2+,Mg2+-ATPase of sarcoplasmic reticulum fragments (SRF) were investigated at 1 mM ATP. There was an alteration of the sensitivity of the ATPase to the monovalent cations during storage of the SRF preparation. The Ca2+, Mg2+-ATPase of freshly prepared SRF was slightly activated by 5-10 mM K+ and Na+. Mg2+-ATPase was inhibited by both the monovalent cations to the same extent, and this response to the ions was independent of the freshness of the preparations. After storage of SRF, however, the Ca2+,Mg2+-ATPase was markedly activated by higher concentrations of K+ and Na+ (0.2-0.3 M). K+ and Na+ reduced the Ca uptake at the steady state in freshly prepared SRF, but did not affect pre-steady state uptake. In the presence of oxalate, the rate of Ca accumulation both in fresh and stored preparations was activated by 0.1-0.2 M K+ and Na+. The Ca2+, mg2+-ATPase with oxalate, so-called "extra ATPase," showed the same response to the ions as did the activity without oxalate during storage.

Abstract
Membrane-bound Ca or Mg of sarcoplasmic reticulum fragments were removed by treating the membrane with EDTA or an acidic solution, and the changes in the enzymatic activities of sarcoplasmic reticulum fragments induced by these treatments were examined. With the decrease in the amount of membrane-bound Ca below 1-3-10(-8) mol/mg protein, it was demonstrated that the activity of (Ca2+ + Mg2+)-ATPase transiently increased and then diminished, that the Ca-uptake and phosphoenzyme formation declined gradually, and that the activity of Mg2+-ATPase was affected to a less extent. Sodium dodecyl sulfate-gel electrophoretic patterns of peptides from the metal-deficient membranes were the same as those of the untreated material. The level of the phosphoenzyme formation of the metal-deficient membrane was restored by increasing the amount of membrane-bound Ca, but not by increasing the amount of membrane-bound Mg.

Abstract
A protein fraction which has a high affinity for polyribosomes was isolated from rough microsomal membranes of rat liver. The mode of polyribosome binding to this fraction (R-fraction) was studied by using CsCl equilibrium centrifugation and compared with that for stripped rough microsomal membranes. The following were found. (1) The polyribosome-binding cpacity of the R-fraction was heat-labile and sensitive to trypsin, and was suppressed by increasing KCl concentration and addition of 0.1 mM-aurintricarboxylic acid. (2) Of the four subfractions obtained by gel filtration of the R-fraction on a Sephadex G-200, only the R1-fraction, eluted at the void volume, showed a high affinity for polyribosomes. The polyribosome-binding capacity of the R1-fraction decreased with time on storage at 4 degrees C. (3) The R1-fraction contained three major proteins with mol. wts. 108,000, 99,000 and 65,000.

Abstract
The substances responsible for inhibiting complement-fixation (CF) reaction of the late-stage serum of an equine infectious anemia (EIA)-infected horse were investigated. It was found that the IgG and IgG(T) classes in the late-stage serum were responsible for the CF inhibition. IgA could not be detected in partially purified IgG(T) by an immunodiffusion test using rabbit anti-human IgA serum. Other serum components could not be demonstrated in purified IgG by immunoelectrophoresis using rabbit anti-horse serum. The IgG class simultaneously showed CF and CF-inhibiting (CFI) activities, whereas the IgG(T) class showed only CFI activity. The IgG(T) class could exert CFI activity only when it had been reacted with the EIA antigen before addition of the reference CF serum and complement. In contrast, the IgG class converted the CF-active reference serum into a non-CF-reactive one irrespective of whether it was simultaneously reacted with the EIA antigen and the reference CF serum, whether it was added to the reaction mixture of the EIA antigen and the reference CF serum, or whether it was sensitized with the EIA antigen before addition of the reference CF serum. Inhibitory activities of the IgG and IgG(T) classes seemed to be different from each other in their reaction pattern as far as tested under our experimental conditions. Their CFI activities seemed to be specific for EIA, being negative in CFI activity in reaction with other antigens.

Abstract
Concanavalin A-mediated agglutination reactions of hepatoma cells [AH-130F(N)] and isolated liver cells, as well as of plasma membranes prepared from the liver and hepatoma, were investigated kinetically together with the effect of colchicine upon them. Concanavalin A-mediated agglutination of hepatoma cells at 25 degrees proceeded with biphasic kinetics (first and second stages of agglutination), while no appreciable agglutination of liver cells was observed in the presence of concanavalin A. The plasma membranes from the liver and hepatoma cells were similarly agglutinated with concanavalin A at 25 degrees but not at 0 degrees. The concanavalin A-mediated membrane agglutination proceeded with monophasic kinetics and was incomplete. Colchicine inhibited preferentially the second stage of concanavalin A-mediated agglutination of hepatoma cells, but it did not affect the concanavalin A-mediated agglutination of plasma membranes of both types of cells.

Abstract
The transamination of aromatic l-amino acids (5-hydroxytryptophan, tryptophan, tyrosine, phenylalanine and kynurenine) was shown to be catalysed by enzyme preparations from rat small intestine. On the basis of the partial purification and characterization of these aromatic amino acid transaminases, it is suggested that rat small intestine contains several kinds of aromatic amino acid transaminases.
