Abstract
1. Pyrenean brown trout (Salmo trutta fario) from 200 to 1700 g were analysed in lots of 12 specimens in March, April, July and October 1988, and in January 1989. 2. Hormones (insulin, glucagon, cortisol) and metabolites (glucose, lactate, proteins, triglycerides) were determined in plasma. 3. Body parameters (length and weight) increased progressively, while plasma metabolites and hormones were more dependent on seasonal and sexual conditions. 4. Plasma insulin presented a maximum in spring (11 ng/ml) and a minimum in January (5 ng/ml). A clear relationship between insulin and annual growth rates was established. Plasma glucagon showed annual values between 700 and 1500 pg/ml, with significant seasonal variations. The molar ratio glucagon/insulin oscillated from 0.21 in January to 0.38 in July. 5. Plasma glucose variations agreed with those of pancreatic hormones, especially evident with glucagon levels. Proteins were more uniform throughout year, and plasma lipids were especially associated to the reproductive state in females.

Abstract
1. The aim of this study has been to evaluate the response to imipramine treatment in enuretic children through the use of a series of clinical and pharmacological variables and by applying a multivariate (principal components) analysis technique. 2. The study was carried out on 146 children whose ages ranged from 5 to 14 years, and who received variable doses of imipramine (12.5 to 100 mg day-1). 3. The quantitative variables analyzed were: drug dosage, serum levels of imipramine and its metabolite desipramine, the relationship between them both, the duration of treatment, age and weight. 4. The qualitative variables were: compliance, presence of side-effects, enuretic and/or psychiatric antecedents, intelligence quotient (I.Q.), the existence (or absence) of related pathologies, sex, and the type of enuresis. 5. The response to treatment was quantified by means of the percentage of decrease in frequency of enuresis as compared with the initial frequency. 6. The results obtained show that the variables which are most associated with the reduction of enuresis are, in decreasing order: the dosage of imipramine administered, the duration of treatment, compliance and the level/dose ratio for the sum of the drug and metabolite levels.

Abstract
The post-antibiotic effect (PAE) is defined as the bacterial growth suppression which persists after a limited exposure to an antimicrobial agent. The PAE and the bactericidal effect of the quinolones ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin and nalidixic acid have been studied against several urinary isolates of Gram-negative bacteria. The PAE was determined after one hour's exposure to the antimicrobial agent using an initial inoculum of 10(5) to 10(6) cfu/ml; the drug was rapidly removed by a 10(-2) dilution technique in antibiotic-free medium. When ciprofloxacin was used at four times its MIC the PAEs were 1.37 +/- 0.09; 2.45 +/- 0.63 and 2.86 +/- 0.15 h against Esch. coli, Klebs. pneumoniae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, respectively. We found lower values for norfloxacin under the same conditions, and nalidixic acid did not induce a significative PAE. These results could support changes in dosing intervals of norfloxacin and ciprofloxacin, with possibly greater intervals between doses.

Abstract
We studied the sensitivity of 160 strains of Bacteroides fragilis (74 beta-lactamase-positive and 86 beta-lactamase-negative) to four third-generation cephalosporins, alone as well as in combination with clavulanic acid and Sulbactam. For susceptibility testing we used a dilution method in agar. Detection of beta-lactamase production by this micro-organism was performed using chromogenic cephalosporin (Nitrocefin). There was a substantial improvement in cephalosporin activity with both positive and negative strains when they were combined with the inhibitors, although this was more significant in beta-lactamase-producing organisms. Generally, the results achieved in combination with clavulanic acid were better than those with Sulbactam, the highest increase in activity being obtained with Ceftizoxime in combination with any one of the inhibitors.

Abstract
Secretogranin II is a very acidic, tyrosine-sulfated protein found in secretory granules of cells belonging to the diffuse neuroendocrine system. It gained more general importance recently as a universal immunohistochemical marker for endocrine neoplasms. Sequence information was obtained from secretogranin II isolated from bovine anterior pituitaries, allowing the isolation of cDNA clones and deduction of its primary structure. Bovine secretogranin II is a 586-amino acid protein of 67,455 Da which is preceded by a signal peptide of 27 residues and contains 9 pairs of basic amino acids in its sequence which are used as potential cleavage sites for generation of physiologically active peptides. Moderately abundant mRNA levels were found in adrenal medulla, pituitary, hippocampus, and caudate. Secretogranin II message was absent from parathyroid gland, adrenal cortex, kidney, liver, and spleen. Depolarization of isolated chromaffin cells by various secretagogues significantly up-regulated secretogranin II mRNA levels by mechanisms distinct from those established for chromogranins and neuropeptides, components maintained along with secretogranin II in neuroendocrine storage vesicles.

Abstract
Class II HLA antigen expression was studied in 30 polyps from 3 patients who were diagnosed with familial polyposis coli. The highest levels of this expression were associated with the most severe grades of dysplasia (p less than 0.00001), the sequence of positivity being HLA-DR greater than DQ greater than DP. No association was observed between the expression of these antigens and the presence of a specific inflammatory leukocytic infiltrate. Our results imply that HLA class II molecule expression is somehow related to malignant transformation in familial polyposis coli in accordance with the adenoma-dysplastic adenoma-adenocarcinoma sequence. Thus these antigens may be useful markers to tumoral progression.

Abstract
HLA class I and II expression was studied on 244 (177 primary and 67 metastatic) solid human tumours of different origin. Alkaline immunophosphatase (APAAP) and immunoperoxidase were used on cryostatic sections to stain MHC antigens. Monomorphic MoAbs were used against class I heavy chain, beta 2-microglobulin, DR, DQ and DP molecules. Class I expression was homogeneous on colon, melanoma and epidermoidal primitive tumours. Loss of HLA class I antigens was more frequent on basal cell carcinomas and sarcomas and was related to tumour differentiation on larynx carcinoma. Class I expression was heterogeneous on breast, larynx and stomach primitive neoplasias. Class I negative tumours were more frequent on metastatic than on primitive melanomas. Divergence of class I between primary tumours and autologous metastases was observed on melanomas, larynx and colorectal carcinomas. Class II expression was heterogeneous on all tumours and in a large number of cases was associated with high intensity of leukocytic infiltrate. HLA-DR expression was higher than HLA-DP and HLA-DQ (DR greater than DP greater than DQ) and was related to tumour progression. Four human tumour cell lines were modulated with recombinant interferon-gamma for HLA class I and II antigens. Different HLA profiles were obtained: increased class I and II expression, increased class II or a low response. Finally, class I genes from 22 tumours were compared with autologous normal cells by Southern blot analysis: 12 tumours were class I positive and 10 negative. No clear differences in RFLP were observed that could be associated with class I rearrangement. The results are discussed in relation to the role that histocompatibility antigens may play in tumour progression and invasiveness.

Abstract
The aims of this work were to investigate the possible effect of several antimicrobial agents alone and in combinations against 190 clinical isolates of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and 30 isolates of Mycobacterium avium, 30 Mycobacterium fortuitum and 30 Mycobacterium chelonei. The susceptibility was determined in Müller-Hinton agar and Middlebrook 7H 10 agar. For interpretation of the results the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined and for the combinations of antimicrobials we used the Fractional Inhibitory Concentration Index (FIC). The possible clinical efficacy was determined by the Inhibitory Quotient. The synergistic effect of several combinations of these compounds was demonstrated.

Abstract
Empyema caused by Kingella denitrificans and Peptostreptococcus spp. was diagnosed in a patient with bronchogenic carcinoma. This appears to be the third report providing evidence of a pathogenic role for K. denitrificans, and the first concerning infection in the pleural space and in a patient with underlying immunosuppressive disease. K. denitrificans should be added to the list of fastidious gram-negative bacteria associated with opportunistic infections in the compromised host.

Abstract
Plasma glucagon levels in 11 different teleosts and in dogfish were evaluated using an adapted classical mammalian radioimmunoassay (RIA). The values obtained are considered relative; sensitivity was inferior to the original method, but the validation experiment results are acceptable. The mean value of the coefficient of the variation for interassay was 6% and for intraassay 4%, recovery was 98%, and a good linearity in the dilution test was found. Some species (Sparus aurata and cyprinids) presented high plasma glucagon concentrations (0.50-1.60 ng/ml) versus the lower levels (0.08-0.40 ng/ml) found in salmonids and others, and the lowest in dogfish (0.02-0.20 ng/ml). A positive correlation (P less than 0.02) between insulin and glucagon plasma levels was found in different species. The low levels obtained in all parameters analyzed in the selachian were remarkable. This adapted RIA could serve as a useful tool in amplifying knowledge on the endocrine pancreatic response in fish in different biological situations.

Abstract
We studied the anatomy of the ventricular septal defect in 20 heart specimens and eight operated patients with transposition of the great arteries regarding the feasibility of the Rastelli operation. They were divided into three groups. In Group I, comprising eight cases, creation of a left ventricle-aorta connection was not prevented by interposition of the atrioventricular valve tissue, and the ventricular septal defect was large or could be enlarged sufficiently. Thus, the Rastelli operation was feasible in all cases. In Group II, comprising 12 cases, interposition of the atrioventricular valves was not present, but the ventricular septal defect was inadequate in size for a good left ventricle-aorta connection. Small or even medium-sized ventricular septal defects were not enlargeable because of surrounding structures or inadequate septum for resection. In all cases, the ventricular septal defect was a tunnellike structure with two orifices; attempted enlargement would be more difficult at the left ventricular end (not obvious to the surgeon's view) than at the right one. The Rastelli operation was judged inadvisable in these cases. In Group III, comprising eight cases, the Rastelli operation was considered inadvisable because of interposition of atrioventricular valve tissue. The size of the ventricular septal defect and the presence of interposed atrioventricular valves can be diagnosed preoperatively. The presence of enough available space for resection, especially at the left ventricular end, should be determined preoperatively and/or intraoperatively in patients with medium-sized ventricular septal defects requiring enlargement. The anatomy of the ventricular septal defect may significantly alter the surgical approach for patients with transposition of the great arteries and ventricular septal defect.

Abstract
Significant and inverse circadian rhythms are demonstrated in glucose and plasma insulin in fish fed a natural diet. The highest glucose levels are found during the light period, around feeding time, and the insulin level peaks during the dark period. As a possible cause for the insulin rhythmicity, the daily variations in several plasma amino acids are considered. The feeding times could be a training factor for metabolic rhythms, which are maintained even during a fast of 7 days. The differences in the compositions of the diets could be responsible for the lack of circadian rhythms in fish fed on a commercial diet.

Abstract
This article reports the results of a retrospective study designed to examine the responses of couples to genetic amniocentesis and subsequent therapeutic abortions due to birth defects. Fourteen women and 12 men were interviewed by experienced interviewers using a structured format designed by the authors, and each interview was audiotaped for later rating. The 5 raters (all women) were instructed to independently rate each interview using forms designed by the authors to elicit information about many aspects of the participant's individual responses as well as perceptions of spouse's responses to the process of pregnancy, amniocentesis, therapeutic abortion, and sequelae. Ratings of all 5 raters were conjoined and an homogeneous narrative was constructed for each interview. Results indicate, in general, that the respondent couples coped well with this experience. In fact 70 per cent of the respondent couples described their marital relationships as becoming closer as a result of their experience. Only a few participants reported long-term deleterious effects. Most couples coped by relying on relatives, friends, and occasionally, professional counsellors. In addition, most participants in this study suggested ways to improve the medical and psychological aspects of this experience.

Abstract
There is considerable controversy regarding antimicrobial prophylaxis against infective endocarditis for routine sigmoidoscopy without biopsy in patients with underlying valvular heart disease. Sigmoidoscopy is known to produce brief, low-grade bacteremia in some patients. Persons with mitral valve prolapse (MVP) may be at risk of infective endocarditis developing during transient bacteremia. We describe a 67-year-old man with known MVP in whom enterococcal endocarditis developed following routine sigmoidoscopy. We believe this to be the first such reported case.

Both met- and leu-enkephalin were identified, in approximately a 2:1 ratio, as well as a third enkephalin-like molecule that is neither met- nor leu-enkephalin. The third enkephalin elutes earlier than met- or leu-enkephalin from a reversed-phase column, has a molecular weight similar to the other enkephalins, and is as active as these enkephalins are in inhibiting binding of labeled opiates to rat brain membranes. All regions of the hippocampus (dentate gyrus, CA1-2, CA3-4, and subiculum) contain all three immunoreactive peptides. Immunocytochemical techniques, using antisera raised against met-enkephalin, show with one antiserum immunoreactivity in the granule cell-mossy fiber system, and with the other scattered immunoreactive cells mostly in the CA2 region. Enkephalins are not confined to the mossy fiber system, as previously suggested, but may be a component of another hippocampal innervation.

Abstract
A simple new test to differentiate Prototheca wickerhamii from Prototheca zopfii by determining susceptibility to clotrimazole is described. A 50-micrograms clotrimazole disk provides a rapid and reliable means of distinguishing P. wickerhamii from P. zopfii.

Abstract
The levels of plasma iron, transferrin saturation and ferritin in cord blood of 64 newborns were found to be elevated relative to the corresponding maternal blood. There was no correlation between the levels of plasma iron, transferrin saturation or ferritin in cord and maternal blood. No correlation was found in cord blood between the hemoglobin levels or red cell indices (MCV, MCH and MCHC) with the levels of ferritin. These results suggest that there is an active process of transfer for iron from mother to the fetus, and this transport is independent of fetal erythropoiesis.

Abstract
We investigated the possible inhibitory action 'in vitro' by antibiotic containing discs against microscopic alga that are potential human pathogens of the genus Prototheca especially P. wickerhamii. The results indicated that inhibitors in vitro included amikacin, colistin, dibecacin, framicetin, gentamycin, kanamycin, lividomycin, neomycin, polymyxin, paromomycin, ribostamycin, sisomycin and tobramycin. We emphasize the interest in the effectiveness at these drugs in a case of human protothecosis.

Abstract
The rumen ciliate
Epidinium ecaudatum
was cultured for 6 months in the presence of two strains of bacteria, starch, alfalfa, linseed oil meal, and buffered saline. The cultures required daily transfer and addition of fresh substrate. The protozoan degraded starch, soybean oil meal, linseed oil meal, and cottonseed oil meal, and the fermentation end products from the breakdown of starch were acetic and butyric acids with traces of formic, propionic, and lactic acids, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen. The relationship of
E. ecaudatum
to other species of rumen oligotrichs and bacteria is discussed.
