Abstract
A mode power measure is applied to characterize nonlinear thin film optical waveguides in an approach analogous to that of Chelkowski and Chrostowski. Together with the normalized film thickness and the asymmetry coefficient, it allows us to get a concise overview of the waveguiding properties at a given power. For self-focusing film, we discuss the design conditions under which the degree of asymmetry significantly affects the waveguiding properties.

Abstract
We have studied the secretion of proteins of the alternative pathway of complement C3, factor B and factor H by human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC). Results showed that factor H and factor B are quantitatively secreted in abundance whereas C3 could only be detected when the cells are maintained in culture during long periods of time. Interferon-gamma stimulated factor H, factor B and, to a lesser extent, C3 secretions. Interleukin (IL) 1 had a differential effect on spontaneous C3, factor B and factor H secretions. In the presence of IL 1, there was a significant secretion of C3 occurring within a short period of culture. IL 1 also stimulated factor B secretion. There was a synergistic stimulating effect between IL 1 and interferon-gamma to bring C3 and factor B productions by HUVEC to very high levels. In contrast, factor H secretion was consistently inhibited by IL 1. Local increase in C3 and factor B secretions by endothelial cells in the presence of IL 1 may have important implications in the inflammatory reaction. In striking contrast, the glucocorticoid dexamethasone (DXM) had modulatory effects which are consistent with its anti-inflammatory properties. DXM, at therapeutic concentrations, decreased C3 and factor B secretions and increased factor H secretion. Local modulation of complement protein secretion by DXM appears to be a new mechanism by which this glucocorticoid may control inflammation.

Abstract
The purpose of the study was to compare two different techniques for isolation of omental microvascular endothelial cells (ECs). Segments of unreinforced polytetrafluorethylene (PTFE) grafts, 9 cm long and 6 mm in diameter, were implanted in 22 dogs as an aortic interposition. Fourteen grafts were seeded with a mean of 7 x 10(5) viable ECs, derived from the microvessels of the omentum: eight grafts (group A) were seeded with ECs obtained by collagenase digestion and by filtration through a pore mesh; six grafts (group B) were seeded with ECs obtained by collagenase digestion and by Percoll gradient separation. In eight grafts (group C), the ECs were not added to the preclot mixture and served as a control. Animals were sacrificed 5 weeks after surgery. The percentage of thrombus-free area was 65 +/- 22% for group A grafts and 74 +/- 15% for group B grafts (NS). The subendothelial layer was 280 +/- 60 microns thick in group A and 220 +/- 30 microns thick in group B (P less than 0.05). Seeded grafts showed a higher production of 6-keto-PGF1 alpha after addition of sodium arachidonate than control grafts. Percoll gradient separation allows isolation of a more purified suspension of ECs. Refinements in omental EC procurement are still required to minimize contamination with other types of cells.

Abstract
During organic acid screening by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, we detected a large peak corresponding to glyceric acid in a patient's urine sample. The D(+) configuration was demonstrated by a polarimetric method and by enzymatic stereospecificity of D-glycerate dehydrogenase (EC 1.1.1.29). We biochemically investigated this fifth reported case of D-glyceric acidemia. In our patient, loading tests with L-serine and fructose led to an increase of D-glyceric acid in both plasma and urine. Determination of other metabolites involved in D-glycerate metabolism revealed no abnormality in any sample examined. After comparing all our results with those of the preceding observations described in the literature, we suggest a possible enzymatic defect located on one of the metabolic pathways shared by fructose and L-serine, possibly at the level of hepatic D-glycerate kinase (EC 2.7.1.31). Nevertheless, a primary defect of L-serine catabolism cannot be entirely excluded.

Abstract
By the use of Western-blot analyses with polyclonal anti-(Factor H) antibodies, two low-Mr protein species of Mr 41,000 and 37,000 under non-reducing conditions and 43,000 and 40,000 under reducing conditions are consistently detected together with the well-known 155,000-Mr Factor H in human plasma and serum. These two additional species are also found in plasma, urine and synovial fluids. The 41,000-Mr species but not the 37,00-Mr species is detected by a monoclonal anti-(Factor H) antibody directed at the N-terminal part of Factor H. The 37,000-Mr species but not the 41,000-Mr species is detected by a monoclonal anti-(Factor H) antibody directed at the C-terminal part of Factor H. The 41,000-Mr and 37,000-Mr species are different from the well-characterized 36,000-Mr N-terminal tryptic fragment of Factor H. They are likely to represent translational products of the short Factor H mRNA species of 1.8 kb and 1.2-1.5 kb occurring in human liver that we have recently described.

Abstract
Non-metastatic cancer of the left colon is still an exclusively surgical problem in 1988. The problem is to determine which type of colectomy should be performed: either a true left hemicolectomy, a long but apparently oncologically satisfactory operation, or segmental colectomy. A recent study by A.R.C. reported the same 5-year survival for these two types of operation with essentially identical postoperative mortality and morbidity. This conclusion confirms that of many studies published on this subject.

Abstract
The fifth component of human complement (C5), under physiological salt conditions, bound firmly to phenyl-Sepharose. This indicated the presence of hydrophobic sites on C5. These sites may play an important role in C5 haemolytic activity since this activity was inhibited by chaotropic ions (Mg2+, SCN-, I-) at relatively low concns (0.6-1 M). Charge shift experiments performed on purified C5 provided further evidence for the presence of hydrophobic sites within C5. Bidirectional charge shifts of C5 mobility were observed with the two detergent systems TX-100 + DOC and TX-100 + CTAB. In order to localize these sites, C5 was subjected to trypsin digestion. Three major fragments were evidenced by two-dimensional electrophoresis (agarose/SDS-PAGE and SDS-PAGE/SDS-PAGE), and were isolated by hydrophobic affinity chromatography. The first fragment, C5FI, was composed probably of a mixture of six alpha chain fragments (alpha 1-alpha 6) linked to the beta chain by disulphide bridges. The second fragment, C5FII, was composed of the beta chain linked to two alpha chain fragments: alpha 2 (Mr = 58 K) and alpha 4 (Mr = 32 K). The third fragment, C5FIII, contained two covalently linked chains (beta chain and alpha 4). The rank order for mol. wt, agarose gel electrophoretic mobility and hydrophobicity was respectively: C5 greater than or equal to C5FI greater than C5FII greater than C5FIII; C5 less than or equal to C5FI less than or equal to C5FII much less than C5FIII; and C5FII greater than or equal to C5 greater than C5FI much greater than C5FIII. From the relative hydrophobicity, the hydrophobic sites of C5 can be localized to the alpha 2 fragment (Mr = 58 K) since C5FIII lacked the alpha 2 fragment and was not hydrophobic. Cleavage and the liberation of the N-terminal part of C5 induced an increase in hydrophobicity of the remaining part of C5 (C5b and C5FII), suggesting a possible role of the hydrophobic sites in association of C5b with membranes.

Abstract
The involvement of sialic acids in the microheterogeneity of human complement factor B was investigated. Desialylation kinetics revealed all the charge intermediates from a complex native to a homogeneous form. The relation between this heterogeneity and posttranslational events was explored in cultured hepatoma cells. Intracellular factor B exhibited the same isoelectric focusing pattern as the desialylated purified protein, whereas a highly heterogeneous form was secreted. In contrast, when N-glycosylation was prevented by tunicamycin, both intracellular and secreted forms focused like intracellular factor B from control cultures. These data lead to the conclusion that the microheterogeneity of human factor B results from different degrees of sialylation of its N-glycans.

Abstract
Cells from all the human B-lymphoblastoid cell lines tested and most human monocytes form rosettes with marmoset red blood cells (MaRBC). Because previous reports suggested the involvement of complement components in this phenomenon, the mechanism of rosette formation and the eventual similarities between the MaRBC receptor and the CR1 receptor present on human erythrocytes have been analyzed herein. The binding of MaRBC to human leukocytes strongly differs from the immune adherence phenomenon: rabbit anti-human CR1 did not react with MaRBC and the MaRBC receptor-binding activity is Ca2+-dependent. Rosette formation required intact energy metabolism and cytoskeleton integrity of leukocytes. Our attempts to purify the receptor from MaRBC membranes revealed the absence of CR1. Nevertheless, C3-binding proteins were isolated by selective desorption by Sepharose iC3 column chromatography. A three-band pattern was observed under reduced conditions with 74,000, 70,000, and 53,000 molecular weights. It was not possible to further separate these components. This protein complex inhibited the rosette phenomenon between MaRBC and both Raji and U-937 cells, exhibited a very poor cofactor activity, and had no decay-accelerating activity toward the classical C3 convertase. This material did not cross-react with antibodies directed to human proteins. These results showed that erythrocytes from new world monkeys do not express a receptor analogous to the human CR1, but expressed C3-binding protein with low cofactor activity that could recognize membrane-associated complement components.

Abstract
Fine needle aspiration biopsy is a fast and inexpensive technique well tolerated by animals. Its efficacy for the diagnosis of malignancy and determination of cellular origin was investigated for 97 malignant tumors and five benign lesions in 83 dogs and 19 cats. Histological examination of the lesions was performed in each case. Malignancy was detected by cytology in 69% of the malignant tumors. The cellular origin of the lesion was determined in 74% of the cases. Confirmation of malignancy and determination of cellular origin permitted an early diagnosis and prognosis. Since fine needle aspiration biopsy and cytology cannot definitely rule out malignancy, a surgical biopsy and histopathology should be done when malignancy is suspected clinically and not confirmed cytologically. Specimens of good quality, adequate collaboration between the cytologist and clinicians, and sufficient knowledge of pathology and cytology are basic requirements for obtaining good results with fine needle aspiration biopsy and cytology.

Abstract
Phorbol myristate acetate (PMA)-stimulated human monocyte-like cells (U-937) were found to synthesize the third component of complement (C3), as shown by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and immunoprecipitation from [35S]methionine-labelled culture supernatants. C3 synthesis occurred at a rate of about 160 ng of C3/24 h per 10(6) cells on day 7 after addition of PMA; it was blocked by cycloheximide treatment and was restored after removal of the inhibitor. SDS/polyacrylamide-gel-electrophoretic analysis of the immunoprecipitated protein showed that the size and subunit structure of the newly synthesized C3 were identical with those of plasma C3, and that a single-chain intracellular precursor was present in the cell lysates. Haemolytic assays showed that the synthesized C3 fully expressed functional activity in early culture within 4 h. After longer culture, a loss of haemolytic activity was observed. The possibility that newly secreted C3 is cleaved by U-937 cells themselves was suggested.

Abstract
We used a system of co-culture of adult rat hepatocytes with another epithelial cell type from rat liver to study the synthesis of two acute-phase reactants, alpha-1 acid glycoprotein (alpha 1AGP) and the third component of complement (C3), and we have obtained long-term secretion of these two proteins. After a period of adaptation corresponding to the first 2-4 days of the co-culture, hepatocytes secreted C3 and alpha 1AGP for at least 2 weeks at a mean level higher than that observed in the first days of a pure culture of hepatocytes. When pulse-chase analysis was performed on day 6 of co-culture, kinetics of synthesis of alpha 1AGP and C3 were the same as those observed on day 1 of a conventional culture of pure hepatocytes. Furthermore, intracellular and extracellular alpha 1AGP had Mr values respectively of 39,000 and of 42,000-52,000, identical with those observed in pure cultures of hepatocytes. Similarly, the molecular size and subunit structures of C3 were the same in co-culture and in cultures, indicating an identical processing of this protein. C3 produced in co-culture was also haemolytically active. Therefore, the system of adult hepatocytes co-cultured with this liver epithelial cell provides a physiological system in vitro which permits long-term synthesis of the two acute-phase reactants C3 and alpha 1AGP. This model opens the possibility to study the modulation of the synthesis of these two proteins during a long period by inflammatory agents or by hormones.

Abstract
The main purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of an oral fluid therapy alone or combined with parenteral administration of a 5% dextrose solution to attenuate the clinical signs and the pathophysiological consequences of transmissible gastroenteritis in neonatal piglets. Eighteen two day old conventional piglets were infected with transmissible gastroenteritis virus while six others were used as controls (Group 1). At the onset of diarrhea, infected piglets were divided into three groups of six (Groups 2, 3 and 4). Piglets in group 2 were not treated and were fed a milk replacer ad libitum. Piglets in group 3 were removed from the milk replacer and placed on an oral glucose-glycine-electrolyte solution ad libitum. Those in group 4 were placed on oral fluid therapy and received a 5% dextrose solution intraperitoneally at the rate of 25 mL/kg of body weight once a day. Blood samples were collected in heparin within minutes after the infected piglets became comatose and from the controls at four or five days of age. The following variables were measured: packed red cell volume, blood pH, total plasma protein and bicarbonate, blood urea nitrogen, and plasma glucose, creatinine, chloride, inorganic phosphorus, sodium, potassium, magnesium and calcium. Vomiting and diarrhea appeared 12 to 24 hours postinoculation in the infected piglets. There was a sudden and rapid progression into a comatose and moribund state one or two days later whether the infected piglets were treated or not.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract
The human monocyte line, U-937, derived from an individual with histiocytic lymphoma was studied for the expression of surface C3 receptors, after cultivation in the presence of phorbol myristate acetate (PMA) or T lymphocyte-conditioned medium. Receptors were detected by using EAC4b, EAC3b, EC3b, EAC3bi and EAC3d intermediates. U-937 cells, in exponential growth phase, poorly bound the intermediates; after exposure to PMA or T lymphocyte-conditioned medium, U-937 cells strongly bound both EAC3b and EAC3bi since about 50% of cells rosetted with these intermediates. This binding was totally inhibited by EDTA and by Mac-1 monoclonal antibody, suggesting the presence of only CR3 receptor types on these cells. Although U-937 cells formed rosettes with EAC3b, there was no evidence for the presence of CR1 receptors since no rosette was observed either with EAC4b or with EC3b intermediates (EC3b were prepared by coupling purified C3b to erythrocytes with N-succinimidyl 3-(2-pyridyldithio)propionate. As small amounts of factor H were present on EAC3b intermediates, incubation of EAC3b with U-937 cells induced their transformation into EAC3bi and their binding to CR3. Moreover, U-937 cells did not promote the cleavage of C3b in the presence of factor I alone, suggesting that these cells did not bear a sufficient amount of functionally active CR1. These results demonstrated that U-937 cells predominantly expressed CR3. The study of the kinetics of EAC3bi rosette formation demonstrated that CR3 expression is closely related to PMA activation. We suggest that CR3 activity could result from a phosphorylation of existing receptors.

Abstract
The spread of influenza A viruses from one animal reservoir to another forms an important part of the epidemiological study of influenza. The precise characterization of viral antigens by monoclonal antibodies makes possible an interesting immunological approach to the transfer of strains from one reservoir to another. This work has shown that the recent porcine strains in France, Belgium, and Spain are closely related antigenically, and distinct from the A/sw/NJ/8/76 strain. Their prototype is strain A/sw/Fin/2899/82.An avian strain, A/ty/Brit/46/83, which has caused limited epidemics of reduced egg-laying among turkeys, has a haemagglutinin identical with that of strain A/sw/2899/82.This immunological finding, combined with epidemiological information (geographical location and absence of any influenza antibody in turkey farms in previous years), suggests that the transfer of influenza viruses has taken place in the direction from pig to turkey.

Abstract
Five hundred and eighty dogs with at least one clinical sign compatible with a systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) were entered in a prospective study aimed at evaluating the prevalence of antinuclear antibodies (ANAb). SLE was diagnosed in 38 of these dogs (group A) which fulfilled at least four American Rheumatism Association (ARA) criteria; of these, sixteen had ANAb titers greater than or equal to 4096. The 23 dogs which met three or two ARA criteria (group B) had an ANAb geometric mean titer (GMT) of 259. Dogs (group C) with only 1 criterium had an ANAb GMT of 75. Anti-ds-DNA Ab were present in 6 dogs from group A (16%), and 2 dogs from group B (9%). Anti-histone Ab were present among dogs from group A, B and C with frequencies of 81%, 67% and 26%, respectively. Among dogs from group A, the ANAb titers and the levels of anti-histone Ab correlated positively when individual sera were considered. Antibodies against the soluble nuclear antigen (SNA) were detected in 74%, 39% and 13% of the dogs from groups A, B and C, respectively. Antibodies initially described in human SLE also exist in SLE dogs. Anti-Sm Ab were found in 24% of dogs in group A. With anti-RNP Ab the frequency was still lower (10%). However, two other types of anti-SNA Ab against RNAse and trypsin-resistant antigens, not found in human "reference sera", were often detected. The first type (anti-type 1 Ab) was found in 26% and 9% of group A and group B, The first type (anti-type 1 Ab) was found in 26% and 9% of group A and group B, respectively; the second type (anti-type 2 Ab) is less frequent, and was found in 13% and 17% of group A and B, respectively. It appears that testing for anti-Sm, anti-type 1 and anti-histone Ab should be performed in order to improve the diagnosis of SLE in dogs.

Abstract
A fat diet has been administered for 3 months to Cynomologus monkeys treated with blackcurrant anthocyanosides as compared with others receiving no treatment. Blood filtrability of animals given a fat diet alone was significantly lowered (20.8%; p less than 0.01) as compared with that of animals receiving a standard diet. Blood filtrability of animals receiving a fat diet plus blackcurrant anthocyanosides was not significantly different from that of animals given a standard diet. Emphasis is laid on a new approach to the action of this type of product on blood vessel contents as compared with the known action on the container.

Abstract
Immunisation of rabbits or goats with denaturated human C3 reproducibly gives rise to an antiserum of restricted specificity which precipitates native C3, C3b and iC3b, but not C3c or C3d isolated from 'aged' serum. The antigenic sites recognised by the antiserum appear to be localised in a small segment of the polypeptide chain located close to the N-terminus of the C3b alpha' chain. Affinity chromatography using antibodies developed by this procedure reveals an unusual pattern of degradation of C3 which occurs on conventional 'ageing' of serum at 37 degrees C.

Abstract
The main purpose of this work was to study changes in the balance of fluids, electrolytes and blood metabolites in neonatal piglets with severe transmissible gastroenteritis. Six two day old conventional piglets were infected with transmissible gastroenteritis virus while six others were used as normal controls. Blood samples were collected in heparin when the infected piglets were moribund. The following variables were measured: packed red cell volume, total plasma protein and bicarbonate, blood pH, blood urea nitrogen and plasma glucose, creatinine, chloride, inorganic phosphorus, sodium, potassium, magnesium and calcium. Vomiting and diarrhea appeared 12 to 24 hours postinoculation in the infected piglets and they were moribund one or two days later. Before becoming moribund, most of the piglets fell rapidly into a lethargic and comatose state. The most evident changes in their blood variables were an increase in packed cell volume, total protein, blood urea nitrogen, phosphorus and magnesium levels and a decrease in pH and bicarbonate concentration as well as a severe hypoglycemia. The results suggest that severe hypoglycemia coupled with metabolic acidosis and dehydration might be an important factor contributing to the high mortality rates caused by transmissible gastroenteritis in neonatal piglets. The hypoglycemia results from a combination of the inadequate glucose metabolism inherent to neonatal piglets and the acute maldigestion and malabsorption resulting from the diffuse and severe villous atrophy induced by the virus.

Abstract
Human complement factor H was prepared in highly purified form from fresh serum by euglobulin precipitation, DEAE-Sephacel chromatography and Sephacryl S-300 gel filtration. This preparation allowed the recovery of 37% of the initial factor H. Sodium dodecyl sulphate/polyacrylamide-gel electrophoresis revealed that factor H was homogeneous both in reduced and non-reduced media and exhibited a molecular mass of 150 kDa. Charge-shift experiments clearly showed the presence of hydrophobic sites in the factor H molecule. Charge shifts were observed with two detergent systems (Triton/sodium deoxycholate and Triton/cetyltrimethylammonium bromide). Factor H was able to bind to phenyl-Sepharose. This property allowed us to study two populations of factor H. These two populations exhibited the same physicochemical parameters, but revealed differences in their ability to aggregate in low- and iso-ionic-strength media. The molecular basis and biological significance of this heterogeneity are discussed.

Abstract
The finding of dramatically depressed levels of C4 in a 17-year old patient with severe systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) prompted a genetic study of her family. This study revealed the existence of a partial C4 deficiency; we found the presence of a C4A3,C4BQo haplotype which was transmitted by the mother to each of her children. This patient possessed, in her serum, an autoantibody with anti-C4 specificity. The immunochemical characterization of this autoantibody revealed that it was IgM and belonged to the immunoconglutinin family. We have studied the effects of this autoantibody on the formation and dissociation kinetics of classical C3-convertase.

Abstract
Secretory granules containing primarily growth hormone and prolactin were isolated from bovine anterior pituitaries. Marker enzyme analysis and electron microscopy indicated that the secretory granule fraction did not contain measureable amounts of other intracellular organelles. Such isolated granules were resistant to a variety of chemical and physical challenges including variations in osmolarity, ionic strength, EGTA, sonication, boiling, etc. The only treatments that were found to routinely result in granules lysis were alkaline pH and 0.5% SDS. Nonspecific leakage of both growth hormone and prolactin was less than 9% of total hormone pool even after a 60-min incubation. The release of prolactin but not growth hormone could be increased by lowering the free calcium concentration. Conversely, 10(-5) M ionophore A23187 caused a decrease in nonspecific hormone leakage. This raises the possibility that a nonexocytosis secretory pathway might be involved in pituitary hormone release. The initial secretory granule fraction was further purified using discontinuous sucrose gradient ultracentrifugation to yield a subfraction highly enriched in prolactin granules. These granules had the same stability characteristics as the original secretory granule fraction. The use of such granules should prove useful in our efforts to understand how calcium regulates cellular secretion.

Abstract
In the present work, it was demonstrated for the first time that the coelomic fluid of Lumbricus terrestris contained a substance recognized by human classical convertase. This substance permitted an immune, complement-dependent agglutination response of sheep erythrocytes carrying C3-convertase (EAC142). In addition, substances secreted by coelomic leukocytes possessed an inhibitory activity against human complement: the component C3 was cleaved into a C3b fragment. This result suggests the presence of a system the function of which is C3-convertase-like. We have thus shown that some complement functions, with their natural inhibitors, appear early in evolution. Certain of these functions and structures might be preserved throughout evolution.

Abstract
Human complement component H was found to modify greatly the binding of C3-coated particles to lymphocytes. We used an experimental model in which lymphocytes were mixed successively with various amounts of H and C3b-coated erythrocytes. At least three mechanisms were postulated to interpret the phenomenon: (i) release of endogenous I by lymphocytes triggered by H through specific binding sites, (ii) cleavage of iC3b by I, promoted by complement receptor type one, and (iii) inhibition of immune adherence by H. Such qualitative and quantitative changes in C3-coated particle recognition by the binding sites might mediate important functions of lymphocytes.

Abstract
The heat lability of early acting components of human complement was studied in detail. Kinetic disappearance of individual components was monitored by hemolytic assay. C2 and factor B were the most heat labile components. We took advantage of the difference in heat stability between C2 and C1 to develop a hemolytic assay for human C2.

Abstract
We have immunised BALB/c mice with a melanoma antigen obtained after papain solubilisation of the membranes of a metastatic melanoma tumour and fused the immune spleen cells to the mouse myeloma line P3-NS1/1-Ag4.1. The produced hybridoma antibodies (Mel-PV antibodies) recognised the initial melanoma antigen in haemagglutination, but did not react with any of the HLA phenotypes tested by cytotoxicity on a panel of B lymphocytes with known HLA-A and B phenotypes. We rosetted red blood cells coated with protein A with dispersed cells from fresh melanoma tumours, and a high degree of specificity for human malignant melanocytes was observed. Purified Mel-PV antibodies were also tested by indirect immunofluorescence and found to be oriented towards cytoplasmic components of malignant melanoma cells. These results indicate that the use of melanoma antigens for preparing monoclonal antibodies maintained a satisfactory degree of specificity and may be an adequate starting point for defining common and specific antigenic determinants on human melanoma.

Abstract
Intra-nasal inoculation of 10-day-old piglets, free of specific pathogenic flora, with swine influenza virus A/H1 N1 and A/H3 N2 produces lesions of viral pneumonia without detectable clinical signs. Following indirect contamination all the strains studied were able to multiply in the respiratory tract; in those cases where no macroscopic lesion was seen, microscopic examination revealed variable modification of the pulmonary tissue depending on the virus causing infection. Influenza virus type H3 N2 are naturally found in many groups of pigs and can therefore play an important role in the respiratory pathology of the hog. Experimental results when compared to findings in the field indicate that the severity of the disease is linked to associated etiological factors as well as to the virulence of the viral strains themselves.

Abstract
The nitrate and nitrite contents in cheese of the Gouda type, produced by the Milk Complex of Havanna, were investigated and compared with those found in 5 types of imported cheese consumed in Cuba. No significant differences were found in the mean value (mean) of NaNO3, whereas in the mean value (mean) of NaNO2 differences were found when comparing all cheeses against each other. From these results it is inferred that the consumption of Gouda type cheese does not represent an important contribution to the daily intake of nitrates and nitrites, precursors in the synthesis of cancerogenic N-nitroso compounds.

Abstract
In this paper, we describe two simple "one-step" methods to assay the C4 and C5 haemolytic activities of human complement. These methods required fresh normal sera immunochemically depleted of C4 or C5 components of the complement system. These sera, called R4 and R5 respectively, were prepared by affinity chromatography on monospecific anti-C4 Sepharose-4B or monospecific anti-C5 Sepharose-4B. Resins were washed with high-ionic strength solution containing 20% saccharose, which gave this method a very high specificity. These reagents were successfully used in the detection and quantification of C4 and C5 in all preparation steps as well as in normal and pathological sera. Two different kinds of haemolytic assays were developed and optimized: a haemolytic tube assay and a haemolytic agarose plate assay.

Abstract
The attractive action of riboflavin at certain concentrations on the young Salmon (parr) has been demonstrated. This property diminished or disappears with smoltifications. Owing to the emission of riboflavin by the young Salmon, the possibility, at diverse migratory or sedentary phases of the biological cycle, of an action of a pheromone or ecomone type, is discussed.

Abstract
Charge shift electrophoresis and crossed hydrophobic interaction immuno-electrophoresis were used to demonstrate the presence of hydrophobic sites in the human C3 molecule. C3b and C3d were true amphiphilic proteins that could bind to hydrophobic surfaces. To the contrary, native C3, that presented the characteristics of amphiphilic proteins upon charge shift electrophoresis, did not bind to hydrophobic surfaces. These results suggested that the hydrophobic sites were located in the internal part of the C3 molecule and they were exposed in the external part when C3 was activated. The action of chaotropes on C3 was studied in detail and showed that the hydrophobic sites protected the thiolester bond (present in the labile site) from hydrolysis by water and thereby preserved the biological properties of native C3.
