N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors play important roles in acquisition and expression of the eyeblink conditioned response in glutamate receptor subunit delta2 mutant mice. Abstract
Classical eyeblink conditioning has been known to depend critically on the cerebellum. Apparently consistent with this, glutamate receptor subunit delta2 null mutant mice, which have serious morphological and functional deficiencies in the cerebellar cortex, are severely impaired in delay paradigm. However, these mutant mice successfully learn in trace paradigm, even in '0-trace paradigm,' in which the unconditioned stimulus starts just after the conditioned stimulus terminates. Our previous studies revealed that the hippocampus and the muscarinic acetylcholine receptors play crucial roles in 0-trace paradigm in glutamate receptor subunit delta2 null mutant mice unlike in wild-type mice, suggesting a large contribution of the forebrain to 0-trace conditioning in this type of mutant mice. In the present study, we investigated the role of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors in 0-trace eyeblink conditioning in glutamate receptor subunit delta2 null mutant mice. Mice were injected intraperitoneally with the noncompetitive N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor antagonist (+)MK-801 (0.1mg/kg) or saline, and conditioned with 350-ms tone conditioned stimulus followed by 100-ms periorbital shock unconditioned stimulus. Glutamate receptor subunit delta2 null mutant mice that received (+)MK-801 injection exhibited a severe impairment in acquisition of the conditioned response, compared with the saline-injected glutamate receptor subunit delta2 null mutant mice. In contrast, wild-type mice were not impaired in acquisition of 0-trace conditioned response by (+)MK-801 injection. After the injection solution was changed from (+)MK-801 to saline, glutamate receptor subunit delta2 null mutant mice showed a rapid and partial recovery of performance of the conditioned response. On the other hand, when the injection solution was changed from saline to (+)MK-801, glutamate receptor subunit delta2 null mutant mice showed a marked impairment in expression of the pre-acquired conditioned response, whereas impairment of the expression was small in wild-type mice. Injection of (+)MK-801 had no significant effects on spontaneous eyeblink frequency or startle eyeblink frequency to the tone conditioned stimulus in either glutamate receptor subunit delta2 null mutant mice or wild-type mice. These results suggest that N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors play critical roles both in acquisition and expression of the conditioned response in 0-trace eyeblink conditioning in glutamate receptor subunit delta2 null mutant mice.

Abstract
The effect of edaravone as an inhibitor of ischemic brain damage in addition to routine treatment was retrospectively examined in 70 patients with lacunar infarction who were admitted within 24 hours of symptom onset. Clinical status was assessed using the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS). The modified Rankin Scale (MRS) was used to assess clinical outcomes at 3 months after onset, with a good outcome defined as MRS score < or =2. Risk factors were also evaluated, including evidence of hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia, coronary heart disease, and a history of smoking longer than 2 months. The probability of a good outcome and independence at 3 months was assessed by backward stepwise logistic regression analysis based on the maximum likelihood ratio. Administration of edaravone yielded an odds ratio with multivariate adjustment of 6.49 (95% confidence interval, 1.35 to 50.32; p < 0.05) for a good outcome at 3 months. Higher baseline NIHSS score and higher age also adversely affected the outcome at 3 months (p < 0.005). Administration of edaravone improves the outcome of patients with lacunar infarction.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to investigate the mapping of sigma1 receptors in Parkinson's disease (PD) using [11C]SA4503 and positron emission tomography (PET), and to assess whether sigma1 receptors are involved in the damaged dopaminergic system in PD patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS We studied seven normal volunteers and six PD patients. The low density of dopamine transporters and the normal or high density of dopamine receptors were confirmed in the putamen of all patients using [11C]CFT and [11C]RAC PET. A dynamic series of PET data acquisition was performed with arterial blood sampling. We computed the binding potential (BP) of [11C]SA4503. RESULTS In PD patients, the BP was significantly lower on the more affected than the less affected side of the anterior putamen, although there was no significant difference with respect to the BP between patients and controls. CONCLUSIONS Release of dopamine is reduced asymmetrically in the putamen of early PD. [11C]SA4503 PET is an indicator of presynaptic dopaminergic damage in PD.

Abstract
Sets of primers for the species-specific detection of P. mirabilis and P. vulgaris by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were developed. As targets for these primers beta-lactamase and 16S rRNA gene fragments were chosen on the basis of the multiple leveling of the sequences of the DNA of all known P. mirabilis and P. vulgaris isolates. For differential detection oligonucleotides were selected in such a way that primers, specific for P. vulgaris, contained the non-paired nucleotide for P. mirabilis isolate at the 3'-end, and all other nucleotides were complementary to the beta-lactamase gene fragment. Primers, specific for gene 16S rRNA of P. mirabilis, contained the non-paired nucleotide for P. vulgaris isolates at the 3'-end. Standard PCR was carried out for 6 P. mirabilis and P. vulgaris strains. The use of PCR species-specific primers to P. vulgaris DNA made it possible to amplify the DNA fragment of the expected length only for P. vulgaris isolates, while the result of PCR for P. mirabilis was negative. PCR with primers specific to P. mirabilis permitted the detection of amplicon sized 101 nucleotides pairs only for P. mirabilis strains. These primers were optimized so as to use them in the specific differentiation of closely related P. mirabilis and P. vulgaris species by multiplex PCR. Genus-specific primers permitted the detection of bacterial gyrB gene of the genus Proteus were developed also.

Abstract
We report results from a study of events with a double-Pomeron exchange topology produced in p p collisions at sqrt[s]=1800 GeV. The events are characterized by a leading antiproton and a large rapidity gap on the outgoing proton side. We find that the differential production cross section agrees in shape with predictions based on Regge theory and factorization, and that the ratio of double-Pomeron exchange to single diffractive production rates is relatively unsuppressed as compared to the O(10) suppression factor previously measured in single diffractive production.

Abstract
We report the observation of a narrow state decaying into J/psipi+pi- and produced in 220 pb(-1) of p p-bar collisions at =1.96 Tesqaure root of sV in the CDF II experiment. We observe 730+/-90 decays. The mass is measured to be 3871.3+/-0.7(stat)+/-0.4(syst) MeV/c2, with an observed width consistent with the detector resolution. This is in agreement with the recent observation by the Belle Collaboration of the X(3872) meson.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is often misdiagnosed in early phase. The purpose of this study is to investigate the feature of [(18)F]fluoro-2-deoxy-d-glucose (FDG) positron emission tomography images for the early diagnosis of PSP. METHODS We studied 15 patients with PSP and 16 normal subjects. Using SPM99 and analysis of covariance to eliminate the effect of aging, the differences between PSP and normals were displayed as a statistical map. In the PSP, we also investigated the correlation with duration and with the subscores of Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale. RESULTS The glucose metabolism of midbrain was significantly lower in PSP than in normals. However, correlation was not found between the metabolism of midbrain and clinical deterioration. CONCLUSIONS The statistical map clearly demonstrated the hypometabolism of midbrain in PSP, which is independent of the clinical deterioration. The hypometabolism of midbrain is one of the most promising sign for early diagnosis of PSP.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The effectiveness and toxicity of many drugs depends on the dosing-time schedule, relative to the circadian rhythms of biochemical, physiological, and behavioural processes. Previous studies have found chronopharmacology of ketamine, which is a N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist. The in vivo contribution of the NMDA receptor epsilon1 subunit (NR2A) in this effect is unclear. METHODS In the present study, daily variations in the hypnotic effect of ketamine were determined in wild-type mice and NMDA epsilon1 knockout (KO) mice. RESULTS The effect of ketamine had a definite daily variation in wild-type mice. No significant difference in blood concentration was observed at different dosing times (10:00 and 22:00). In NMDA receptor epsilon1 KO mice, the hypnotic effect of ketamine was weaker than in wild-type mice and there was no dependence on the time of administration. Significant pharmacokinetic differences were not observed between wild-type and KO mice. CONCLUSIONS The enhanced hypnotic effect in the active phase of the circadian cycle is likely a result of changes with the time of day in the susceptibility of the central nervous system to ketamine. Knockout of the NMDA receptor epsilon1 subunit gene markedly reduced the effect of ketamine, and eliminated the time-dependent sensitivity to ketamine.

Abstract
We report on a search for direct Kaluza-Klein graviton production in a data sample of 84 pb(-1) of ppmacr; collisions at sqrt[s]=1.8 TeV, recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We investigate the final state of large missing transverse energy and one or two high energy jets. We compare the data with the predictions from a (3+1+n)-dimensional Kaluza-Klein scenario in which gravity becomes strong at the TeV scale. At 95% confidence level (C.L.) for n=2, 4, and 6 we exclude an effective Planck scale below 1.0, 0.77, and 0.71 TeV, respectively.

Abstract
We present the results of a search for pair production of scalar top quarks (t(1)) in an R-parity violating supersymmetry scenario in 106 pb(-1) of pp collisions at square root of s=1.8 TeV collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. In this mode each t(1) decays into a tau lepton and a b quark. We search for events with two tau's, one decaying leptonically (e or mu) and one decaying hadronically, and two jets. No candidate events pass our final selection criteria. We set a 95% confidence level lower limit on the t(1) mass at 122 GeV/c(2) for Br(t(1)-->tau b)=1.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Crossed cerebellar diaschisis (CCD) refers to reduced metabolism and blood flow in the cerebellar hemisphere contralateral to a cerebral lesion. Many cortical areas have been reported to cause CCD without consideration of confounding factors. We performed single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) in patients with cortical infarction to identify regions independently related to CCD, controlling for possible confounding effects. METHODS Patients with unilateral cortical infarction (n=113; 75 male, 38 female; mean+/-SD age, 66+/-13 years) underwent SPECT of the brain with N-isopropyl-p-[(123)I]iodoamphetamine ((123)I-IMP). Regional cerebral blood flow was measured autoradiographically. Asymmetry indices (AIs) were calculated on the basis of ratios representing symmetrical regional cerebral blood flow in the cerebellum and 16 cerebral regions. CCD was defined as AI for cerebellum >0.1. AIs for 16 cortical regions were considered for both dichotomous and continuous variables for analysis of CCD occurrence by means of backward logistic regression. RESULTS For dichotomized variables, hypoperfusion of postcentral (odds ratio [OR]=7.607; 95% CI, 2.299 to 25.174) and supramarginal (OR=3.916; 95% CI, 1.394 to 11.003) regions independently influenced CCD. For continuous variables, hypoperfusion of postcentral (OR=1.044; 95% CI, 1.019 to 1.068) and supramarginal (OR=1.021; 95% CI, 1.001 to 1.041) regions (and, as a negative factor, medial occipital regions; OR=0.942; 95% CI, 0.895 to 0.991) independently influenced CCD. CONCLUSIONS Many cortical areas apparently do not contribute to CCD. Correspondence of CCD between dichotomized and continuous analyses suggests that location of a lesion, not severity, is the main determinant of CCD.

Abstract
[11C]TMSX is a new positron emission tomography (PET) radioligand that provides visualization of adenosine A(2A) receptors (A(2A)Rs) in the brain, heart and skeletal muscle. Here we report on the first visualization of the A(2A)Rs in the human brain by PET and [11C]TMSX in a male healthy volunteer, compared with the adenosine A1 receptors (A1Rs) and dopamine D2 receptors (D2Rs) which were measured by PET with [11C]MPDX and [11C]raclopride, respectively. The distribution volume (DV) of [11C]TMSX in the baseline was relatively high in the head of caudate nucleus, putamen, and thalamus and relatively low in the cortical regions. Infusion of theophylline, a nonselective A(2A)R antagonist (Ki for A(2A)Rs = 16000 nM for theophylline vs 5.9 nM for TMSX), slightly reduced the DVs in the head of caudate nucleus (8.0% reduction) and putamen (4.5% reduction), but not in the other regions having much lower levels of A(2A)Rs, demonstrating the A(2A)R-specific binding of [11C]TMSX. On the other hand, the A1Rs were widely distributed in the whole brain except for the cerebellum, while the binding potential of [11C]raclopride was predominantly high in the striatum. We concluded that [11C]TMSX is an applicable PET ligand for mapping the A(2A)Rs in the caudate nucleus and putamen in clinical studies because of no availability of other radioligands until now. The [11C]TMSX PET is of great interest for studying the pathophysiology of neurological and psychiatric disorders together with the [11C]raclopride PET for D2Rs evaluation and/or the [11C]MPDX PET for A1Rs evaluation.

Abstract
We report on measurements of differential cross sections dsigma/dp(T) for prompt charm meson production in ppmacr; collisions at sqrt[s]=1.96 TeV using 5.8+/-0.3 pb(-1) of data from the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. The data are collected with a new trigger that is sensitive to the long lifetime of hadrons containing heavy flavor. The charm meson cross sections are measured in the central rapidity region |y|</=1 in four fully reconstructed decay modes: D0-->K-pi(+), D(*+)-->D0pi(+), D+-->K-pi(+)pi(+), D(+)(s)-->phipi(+), and their charge conjugates. The measured cross sections are compared to theoretical calculations.

Abstract
We report on a search for a high mass, narrow width particle that decays directly to emu, etau, or microtau. We use approximately 110 pb(-1) of data collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab from 1992 to 1995. No evidence of lepton flavor violating decays is found. Limits are set on the production and decay of sneutrinos with R-parity violating interactions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Antibody-mediated and cytotoxic T cell-mediated pathogenicity have been implicated as the autoimmune pathophysiologic mechanisms in Rasmussen's encephalitis. METHODS The authors investigated autoantibodies against the NMDA glutamate receptor (GluR) epsilon2 subunit and their epitopes in serum and CSF samples from 15 patients with chronic epilepsia partialis continua (EPC), 17 with West syndrome, 10 with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, and 11 control subjects. RESULTS In 15 patients with chronic EPC, we detected NMDA-type GluR epsilon2 autoantibodies in histologically proven Rasmussen's encephalitis (3/3 patients), clinical Rasmussen's encephalitis (6/7 patients), acute encephalitis/encephalopathy (2/3 patients), and nonprogressive EPC (2/2 patients). Serum IgM autoantibodies were found in the early phase of EPC and became negative later in four patients. The autoantibodies were not detected in West syndrome, Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, or controls. Among 10 patients with histologically proven or clinical Rasmussen's encephalitis, epitope analyses showed that the autoantibodies were predominantly against C-terminal epitopes and rarely against N-terminal epitope, with inconsistency in profile during the courses of disease. Epitope recognition spectrum of autoantibodies was broader in CSF than in serum, and the serum or CSF profile showed an increase in number of epitopes as disease progressed in some patients. CONCLUSIONS The presence of autoantibodies against NMDA GluR epsilon2 suggests autoimmune pathologic mechanisms but is not a hallmark of Rasmussen's encephalitis. Patients with Rasmussen's encephalitis may have autoantibodies against several neural molecules, and these autoantibodies may be produced in the CNS after cytotoxic T cell-mediated neuronal damage.

Abstract
Neurogenesis continues throughout adulthood in the dentate gyrus in mice, and is regulated by environmental, endocrine, and pharmacological stimuli. Although running wheel exercises have been reported to enhance neurogenesis, details of molecule mechanisms of the enhancement are not well understood. We report here that the hippocampal neurogenesis is enhanced when wild-type mice are raised in cages with running wheels for 3 weeks, but the wheel exercise does not enhance the neurogenesis in mice lacking the NMDA receptor epsilon1 subunit. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) has been reported to affect neuronal cell proliferation and survival. We examined the BDNF levels in the hippocampi of wild-type and epsilon1 knockout mice, and found that the BDNF level was increased through wheel exercises in the wild-type but not in the knockout mice. The enhancement of neurogenesis by the wheel exercise was also found to be reversible: when the exercise-stimulated wild-type mice were returned to the environment without running wheels for 3 weeks, the neurogenesis was the same as that in the mice which had never experienced the exercise. These results suggest that the wheel exercise may activate NMDA receptors in the hippocampus, which in turn may enhance BDNF production and neurogenesis.

Abstract
We report a measurement of the fraction of events with a large pseudorapidity gap deltaeta within the pseudorapidity region available to the proton dissociation products X in p+p-->p+X. For a final state p of fractional momentum loss xi(p) and 4-momentum transfer squared t(p) within 0.06<xi(p)<0.09 and |t(p)|<1.0 [0.2] GeV2 at sqrt[s]=1800 [630] GeV, the fraction of events with deltaeta>3 is found to be 0.246+/-0.001 (stat)+/-0.042 (syst) [0.184+/-0.001 (stat)+/-0.043 (syst)]. Our results are compared with gap fractions measured in minimum bias pp collisions and with theoretical expectations.

Search for the supersymmetric partner of the top quark in dilepton events from pp collisions at square root of s=1.8 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2003; 90:251801. Abstract
We have searched for pair production of the supersymmetric partner of the top quark (stop) in 107 pb(-1) of pp collisions at square root of s=1.8 TeV collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). Each stop is assumed to decay into a lepton, bottom quark, and supersymmetric neutrino. Such a scenario would give rise to events with two leptons, two hadronic jets, and a substantial imbalance of transverse energy. No evidence of such a stop signal has been found. We exclude stop masses in the region (80</=m(t)</=135 GeV/c(2)) in the mass plane of stop versus sneutrino.

Abstract
Before the completion of visual development, visual deprivation impairs synaptic elimination in the visual cortex. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the distribution of central benzodiazepine receptor (BZR) is also altered in the visual cortex in subjects with early-onset blindness. Positron emission tomography was carried out with [(15)O]water and [(11)C]flumazenil on six blind subjects and seven sighted controls at rest. We found that the CBF was significantly higher in the visual cortex for the early-onset blind subjects than for the sighted control subjects. However, there was no significant difference in the BZR distribution in the visual cortex for the subject with early-onset blindness than for the sighted control subjects. These results demonstrated that early visual deprivation does not affect the distribution of GABA(A) receptors in the visual cortex with the sensitivity of our measurements. Synaptic elimination may be independent of visual experience in the GABAergic system of the human visual cortex during visual development.

Abstract
We report a search for the production of long-lived charged massive particles in a data sample of 90 pb(-1) of square root[s]=1.8 TeV pp collisions recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. The search uses the muonlike penetration and anomalously high ionization energy loss signature expected for such a particle to discriminate it from backgrounds. The data are found to agree with background expectations, and cross section limits of O(1) pb are derived using two reference models, a stable quark and a stable scalar lepton.

Search for a W' boson decaying to a top and bottom quark pair in 1.8 TeV pp collisions. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2003; 90:081802. Abstract
We report the results of a search for a W' boson produced in pp; collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.8 TeV using a 106 pb(-1) data sample recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We observe no significant excess of events above background for a W' boson decaying to a top and bottom quark pair. In a model where this boson would mediate interactions involving a massive right-handed neutrino (nu(R)) and have standard model strength couplings, we use these data to exclude a W' boson with mass between 225 and 536 GeV/c(2) at 95% confidence level for M(W')>>M(nu(R)) and between 225 and 566 GeV/c(2) at 95% confidence level for M(W')<M(nu(R)).

Abstract
The N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) glutamate receptor (NMDAR), long implicated in developmental plasticity, shows decay time kinetics that shorten postnatally as NR2A subunits are added to the receptor. Neither the mechanism nor immediate effect of this change is known. We studied developing NMDAR currents by using visual neurons in slices from NR2A knockout (NR2AKO) and WT mice. Both strains show increased dendritic levels of synaptic density scaffolding protein PSD-95 with age. Dendritic levels of NR2A increased at the same time in WT and immunoprecipitated with PSD-95. PSD-95NMDAR binding was significantly decreased in the NR2AKO. Moreover, NMDAR miniature currents (minis) were lost and rise times of NMDAR evoked currents increased in mutant mice. Age-matched WT cells showed NR2A-rich receptors predominating in minis, yet slow NR2B mediated currents persisted in evoked currents. Disrupting photoreceptor activation of retinal ganglion cells eliminated increases in PSD-95 and NR2A in superior collicular dendrites of WT mice and slowed the loss of miniature NMDAR currents in NR2AKOs. These data demonstrate that NMDARs that respond to single quantal events mature faster during development by expressing the NR2A subunit earlier than NMDARs that respond to evoked release. We hypothesize that NR2A-rich NMDARs may be localized to the center of developing synapses by an activity-dependent process that involves the targeting of PSD-95 to the postsynaptic density. Neonatal receptors become restricted to perisynpatic or extrasynaptic sites, where they participate primarily in evoked currents.

Limits on extra dimensions and new particle production in the exclusive photon and missing energy signature in pp collisions at square root [s]=1.8 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2002; 89:281801. Abstract
The exclusive gammaE(T) signal has a small standard model cross section and is thus a channel sensitive to new physics. This signature is predicted by models with a superlight gravitino or with large extra spatial dimensions. We search for such signals at the Collider Detector at Fermilab, using 87 pb(-1) of data at square root [s]=1.8 TeV, and extract 95% C.L. limits on these processes. A limit of 221 GeV is set on the scale |F|(1/2) in supersymmetric models. For 4, 6, and 8 extra dimensions, model-dependent limits on the fundamental mass scale M(D) of 0.55, 0.58, and 0.60 TeV, respectively, are found. We also specify a "pseudo-model-independent" method of comparing the results to theoretical predictions.
