Abstract
1. CCAAT/enhancer binding proteins (C/EBPs), as a family of transcription factors, consists of six functionally and structurally related proteins which share a conserved basic leucine zipper (bZIP) DNA-binding domain. The aim of this study was to clone the full-length coding sequences (CDS) of C/EBP-α and -β genes, and determine the abundance of these two genes in various tissues of white king pigeon (C. livia). 2. The complete cDNA sequences of C/EBP-α and -β genes were cloned from pigeons by using PCR combined with rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE). The sequences were bioinformatically analysed, and the tissue distribution determined by quantitative real-time RT-PCR (qRT-PCR). 3. The results showed that the full-length cDNA sequences of pigeon C/EBP-α and -β genes were 2,807bp and 1,778bp, respectively. The open reading frames of C/EBP-α (978 bp) and -β (987bp) encoded 325 amino acids and 328 amino acids, respectively. The pigeon C/EBP-α and C/EBP-β proteins were predicted to have a conserved basic leucine zipper (bZIP) domain, which is a common structure feature of the C/EBP family. Multiple sequence alignments indicated that pigeon C/EBP-α and -β shared more than 90% amino-acid identity with their corresponding homologues in other avian species. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that these two proteins were highly conserved across different species and evolutionary processes. QRT-PCR results indicated that the pigeon C/EBP-α and -β mRNA transcripts were expressed in all investigated organs. The mRNA expression levels of pigeon C/EBP-α in descending order, were in spleen, heart, liver, lung, kidney and muscle. The pigeon C/EBP-β gene had the most abundant expression in lung, followed by the kidney, with minimal expression detected in muscle. 4. This study investigated the full-length cDNA sequences, genetic characteristics and tissue distribution of pigeon C/EBP-α and -β genes and found that they may have functions in various tissues of pigeon. This provides a foundation for further study for regulatory mechanisms of these two genes in birds.

Abstract
Plants form a mutualistic symbiosis with arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi, which facilitates the acquisition of scarce minerals from the soil. In return, the host plants provide sugars and lipids to its fungal partner. However, the mechanism by which the AM fungi obtain sugars from the plant has remained elusive. In this study we investigated the role of potential SWEET family sugar exporters in AM symbiosis in Medicago truncatula. We show that M. truncatula SWEET1b transporter is strongly upregulated in arbuscule-containing cells compared to roots and localizes to the peri-arbuscular membrane, across which nutrient exchange takes place. Heterologous expression of MtSWEET1b in a yeast hexose transport mutant showed that it mainly transports glucose. Overexpression of MtSWEET1b in M. truncatula roots promoted the growth of intraradical mycelium during AM symbiosis. Surprisingly, two independent Mtsweet1b mutants, which are predicted to produce truncated protein variants impaired in glucose transport, exhibited no significant defects in AM symbiosis. However, arbuscule-specific overexpression of MtSWEET1bY57A/G58D , which are considered to act in a dominant-negative manner, resulted in enhanced collapse of arbuscules. Taken together, our results reveal a (redundant) role for MtSWEET1b in the transport of glucose across the peri-arbuscular membrane to maintain arbuscules for a healthy mutually beneficial symbiosis.

Abstract
Introduction: Circulating markers of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) include the 14-3-3η protein, high-mobility group box-1 (HMGB1), anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide (anti-CCP) antibodies, anti-mutated citrullinated vimentin (anti-MCV) antibodies and rheumatoid factor (RF). We set out to determine which two markers in combination provided best discriminatory power for this disease.Methods: We recruited 108 RA patients, 102 non-RA patients (SLE, AS, Sjogren's syndrome, MCTD) and 90 healthy controls. Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, positive likelihood ratio, negative likelihood ratio and the Youden index of each analyte were calculated and binary logistic regression analysis and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve were performed to evaluate their diagnostic value for RA alone and in paired combination.Results: As expected, all markers were elevated in RA patients (P < 0.05). Binary logistic regression analysis showed that 14-3-3η had the highest odds ratio (95% CI) at 2.4 (1.9-2.8). Anti-CCP and anti-MCV had the highest areas under the curves [AUC (95% CI)] at 0.85 (0.78-0.90) and 0.85 (0.78-0.91) respectively (both P < 0.001). In serial detection (one marker followed by another), no combination had a Youden index >0.6. In parallel analysis (both considered together) several combinations had a Youden index >0.7, of which the highest (0.78) was anti-CCP with anti-MCV, with a sensitivity of 93.3% and specificity of 84.7%.Conclusions: Despite individual increases in serum 14-3-3η, HMGB1, anti-CCP, anti-MCV and RF, the combination of anti-CCP and anti-MCV might be of great help for diagnostic in RA, and so should be considered as routine tests for this disease.

Abstract
We report the enhancement of photocatalytic performance by introduction of hydrogen-bonding interactions to a Re bipyridine catalyst and Ru photosensitizer system (ReDAC/RuDAC) by the addition of amide substituents, with carbon monoxide (CO) and carbonate/bicarbonate as products. This system demonstrates a more-than-3-fold increase in turnover number (TONCO = 100 ± 4) and quantum yield (ΦCO = 23.3 ± 0.8%) for CO formation compared to the control system using unsubstituted Ru photosensitizer (RuBPY) and ReDAC (TONCO = 28 ± 4 and ΦCO = 7 ± 1%) in acetonitrile (MeCN) with 1,3-dimethyl-2-phenyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-benzo[d]imidazole (BIH) as sacrificial reductant. In dimethylformamide (DMF), a solvent that disrupts hydrogen bonds, the ReDAC/RuDAC system showed a decrease in catalytic performance while the control system exhibited an increase, indicating the role of hydrogen bonding in enhancing the photocatalysis for CO2 reduction through supramolecular assembly. The similar properties of RuDAC and RuBPY demonstrated in lifetime measurements, spectroscopic analysis, and electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical studies revealed that the enhancement in photocatalysis is due not to differences in intrinsic properties of the catalyst or photosensitizer, but to hydrogen-bonding interactions between them.

Abstract
A substrate-directed enantioselective anti-carboboration reaction of alkenes has been developed, wherein a carbon-based nucleophile and a boron moiety are installed across the C=C bond through a 5-membered palladacycle intermediate. A preliminary result also shows it is possible to extend this reaction to alkenes that are more distal from the directing group and react via a 6-membered palladacycle. The reaction is promoted by a palladium(II) catalyst and a monodentate oxazoline ligand. A range of enantioenriched secondary alkylboronate products were obtained with moderate to high enantioselectivity that could be further upgraded by recrystallization. This work represents an efficient method to synthesize versatile and valuable alkylboronate building blocks. Building on an earlier mechanistic proposal by Peng, He, and Chen, a revised model is proposed to account for the stereoconvergent nature of this transformation.

Abstract
1. Melanoma differentiation-associated gene 5 (MDA5) is a critical member of cytosolic pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) that recognise viral RNA and mediate type I interferon secretion in host cells. 2. The objective of the present study was to identify and characterise the structure and expression of pigeon MDA5. 3. The full-length MDA5 cDNA was cloned from pigeon spleen using RT-PCR and RACE. The distribution and expression level of pigeon MDA5 in different tissues were determined by QRT-PCR. 4. The results showed that the full-length pigeon MDA5 cDNA had 3858 nucleotides (containing a 210-bp 5'-UTR, a 3030-bp open reading frame and a 618-bp 3'-UTR) encoding a polypeptide of 1009 amino acids. The deduced amino acid sequence contained six conserved structural domains typical of RIG-I-like receptor (RLR), including two tandem arranged N-terminal caspase activation and recruitment domains (CARDs), a DEAH/DEAD box helicase domain (DExDc), a helicase superfamily c-terminal domain (HELICc), a type III restriction enzyme (ResIII) and a C-terminal regulatory domain (RD). 5. The pigeon MDA5 showed 84.8%, 87.3%, 87.9% and 87.2% amino acid sequence identities with previously described homologues from chicken, duck, goose and Muscovy ducks, respectively, and phylogenetic analysis revealed a close relationship among these MDA5. 6. Pigeon MDA5 transcript was ubiquitously expressed in all seven tissues tested in healthy pigeons and showed a high level in the thymus gland and kidney. 7. These findings lay the foundation for further research on the function and mechanism of MDA5 in innate immune responses related to vaccinations and infectious diseases in the pigeon.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Hepatic encephalopathy is a common consequence of liver cirrhosis, but diagnosis can be difficult as it is based on clinical criteria alone. We hypothesised that serum prealbumin, cholinesterase and retinol binding protein (RBP) can help support the diagnosis of hepatic encephalopathy. METHODS We enrolled 306 cirrhotic patients (110 with encephalopathy), 100 chronic hepatitis B patients and 50 healthy controls, measuring routine liver function tests (ALT, AST, GGT, ALP, and bilirubin), albumin, prothrombin time, prealbumin, cholinesterase and RBP by routine methods. Logistic regression analysis and areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves (AUCs) were used to find predictive factors for hepatic encephalopathy. RESULTS There were differences in all laboratory indices between the three groups (all p < 0.001). In univariate analysis, albumin, prothrombin time, prealbumin, cholinesterase and RBP were significantly altered in those with encephalopathy (p < 0.01), but only prealbumin, cholinesterase and RBP levels were significant predictors in multivariate analysis, and each was linked to the severity of liver fibrosis defined by the Child-Pugh score (all p < 0.001). The AUCs (95% CI) of prealbumin, cholinesterase and RBP for diagnosing liver cirrhosis with hepatic encephalopathy were comparable at 0.85 (81-90), 0.81 (0.76-0.85) and 0.81 (0.76-0.86), respectively (all p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS Serum prealbumin, cholinesterase and RBP levels are of potential clinical value in diagnosis of liver cirrhosis complicated by encephalopathy.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate the function of LINC01170 in the progression of endometrial carcinoma and its underlying mechanism. METHODS The expression profiles and prognostic data of endometrial carcinoma were downloaded by GDC (genomic data commons) analysis tools. Differentially expressed long noncoding (lnc)RNAs were analyzed by the edgeR (empirical analysis of digital gene expression data in R) package. LncRNAs that were related to prognosis of endometrial carcinoma were calculated by the survival function. Moreover, the PHEAT map package was introduced to edit heatmaps of differentially expressed lncRNAs. Human endometrial carcinoma cell lines (Ishikawa, ECC and HEC-IA) were cultured. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) was used to detect the expressions of lncRNAs and related genes. Cell proliferation was detected by MTT, and cell cycle and apoptosis were detected by flow cytometry. Additionally, Western blot was used to detect protein expressions of relative genes. RESULTS Results showed that LINC01170 was a non-coding RNA. LINC01170 was overexpressed in endometrial carcinoma, which was a risk factor for prognosis of this disease. LINC01170 expressions in carcinoma and para-cancerous tissues of 50 patients with endometrial carcinoma were detected by qRT-PCR and found that the expression level of LINC01170 in endometrial carcinoma was remarkably increased than that of para-cancerous tissues. Moreover, the expression level of LINC01170 in advanced endometrial carcinoma was remarkably higher than that of early-stage disease. After interfering with LINC01170, the proliferation of both the Ishikawa and HEC-1A cells were remarkably decreased, and cell cycle was arrested at the G0/G1 phase. Meanwhile, apoptosis results showed a remarkable apoptosis rate after interfering with LINC01170. Western blot results also demonstrated the decreased activity of AKT pathway and phosphorylated expression of AKT protein after LINC01170 knockdown. In addition, expressions of CDK2, CDK4 and Bcl-2 were decreased after LINC01170 knockdown. CONCLUSIONS LINC01170 promotes the progression of endometrial carcinoma through stimulating proliferation, cell cycle transition and inhibiting apoptosis of endometrial carcinoma cells via AKT pathway.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the roles of N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) against binge drinking-induced fatty liver in mice. Methods: SPF male C57BL/6 mice were randomly divided into 3 groups, i.e. control group, model group, and NAC/ethanol group (n=10). Mice in model and NAC/ethanol groups were exposed to 3 doses of ethanol (6 g/kg bw) to induced fatty liver, while mice in control group received equal volume and equal energy of maltodextrin solution. NAC was administered to mice at 1 h before ethanol exposure (100 mg/kg bw, i.p.). The mice were sacrificed at 6 h after the last ethanol exposure. The liver and epididymal adipose tissues were collected. Histopathological examination and biochemical assay kit were used to evaluate the fat accumulation, while Western-blot was performed to detect the protein levels of some key factors involved in fat metabolism in liver and adipose tissues. Results: Compored with control group mice, the liver index and liver weight were significantly increased compared with model group, the liver index and TG level in NAC/ethanol group mice were all significantly decreased (P<0.05). Histological examination showed NAC effectively suppressed binge drinking-induced fat accumulation in mice liver. In addition, NAC had no significant effects on the protein levels of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-α (PPAR-α), Acy-CoA oxidase (ACOX), sterol regulatory element binding protein 1 c (SREBP-1c) and fatty acid synthase (FAS). Furthermore, the protein levels of hormone sensitive lipase (HSL) did not significantly differ among 3 groups, whereas NAC prevented binge drinking-induced increase of HSL phosphorylation at ser563 and ser660. Conclusion: NAC could effectively attenuate binge drinking-induced fatty liver, which might be associated with the inhibition of lipid mobilization by suppressing the phosphorylation of HSL.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Members of the transient receptor potential (TRP) superfamily are proteins that are critical for insects to detect changes in environmental stimuli and also play key roles in their sensory physiology. Moreover, this family provides potential targets for the design of insecticides. In contrast to a large number of studies conducted on Drosophila melanogaster, molecular studies to characterize TRP channels in agricultural pests are lacking. RESULTS In this study, we identified 15 TRP channel genes in the genome of a notorious agricultural pest, the oriental fruit fly (Bactrocera dorsalis). Comparative analysis of the TRP channels (TRPs) in B. dorsalis with those in D. melanogaster, Glossina morsitans, Musca domestica and the closely related Ceratitis capitata, and TRPs from mosquitoes, Hymenoptera, Lepidoptera, Coleoptera and Hemiptera reveals that members of TRPA and TRPP subfamily are most diverse among insects. The results also suggest that Tephritidae family have two TRP-Polycystin 2 members even though most insects either possess just one or none. The highest expression levels of these two genes are in the testes of B. dorsalis, implying a role in regulating sperm function. We analyzed the expression profiles of the TRP channels identified in this study at different life stages using quantitative real time PCR. The results of this study demonstrate that all TRP channels are mainly expressed in adults, especially at mature stages. The one exception to this trend is BdTRPM, which is more highly expressed in the eggs of B. dorsalis, implying an important role in early development. We also detected the spatial expression of TRP channels in mature adult fruit flies by investigating expression levels within various tissues including those involved in sensory function, such as antennae, compound eyes, mouthparts, legs, and wings, as well as tissues critical for homeostasis and physiology (i.e., Malpighian tubules, the brain and gut as well as fat bodies, ovaries, and testes). CONCLUSION The results of this study establish a solid foundation for future functional characterization of B. dorsalis TRP channels as well as those of other insects and will help future insecticide design targeting these channels.

Abstract
A palladium(II)-catalyzed β,γ-aminohydroxylation reaction of nonconjugated alkenyl carbonyl compounds has been developed. This reaction utilizes a cleavable bidentate directing group to achieve regioselective aminopalladation. The resulting chelation-stabilized alkylpalladium(II) intermediate is then hydroxylated using oxygen/2,6-dimethylbenzoquinone in HFIP as the mild oxidation system. Under the optimized conditions, various nucleophiles and alkene substrates are capable of delivering good yields and high diastereoselectivities of the aminohydroxylated products.

Abstract
The red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren, is a dangerous invasive pest in the United States, China and other countries. Efficient division of labor is one of the main reasons for the success of this social insect. Biogenic amines are important regulators of worker division of labor in this eusocial insect, but the related molecular mechanisms are largely unknown. In this study, we identified 10 candidate biogenic amine synthetic enzyme genes and 17 candidate biogenic amine receptor genes in the genome of S. invicta. Quantitative real-time PCR results indicated that foragers had higher head transcripts levels of all the tested enzyme genes than nurses did. In the abdomen, only the rate-limiting enzyme genes for the biosynthesis of serotonin and dopamine were higher in foragers than in nurses. Among the tested serotonin receptors, only the expression of 5-HT2A gene showed significant difference between foragers and nurses. In the head, more abundant 5-HT2A transcripts were detected in foragers than in nurses. Foragers expressed higher Octβ4R than nurses in the head and abdomen. However, much lower mRNA levels of Dop3 receptor gene were detected in both body regions of foragers than nurses. Several other octopamine and tyramine receptor genes were also differentially expressed between foragers and nurses in the head and/or in the abdomen. Our results will improve the understanding of molecular mechanisms underlying biogenic amine modulation of the worker division of labor in S. invicta.

Abstract
Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi form the most wide-spread endosymbiosis with plants. There is very little host specificity in this interaction, however host preferences as well as varying symbiotic efficiencies have been observed. We hypothesize that secreted proteins (SPs) may act as fungal effectors to control symbiotic efficiency in a host-dependent manner. Therefore, we studied whether arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi adjust their secretome in a host- and stage-dependent manner to contribute to their extremely wide host range. We investigated the expression of SP-encoding genes of Rhizophagus irregularis in three evolutionary distantly related plant species, Medicago truncatula, Nicotiana benthamiana and Allium schoenoprasum. In addition we used laser microdissection in combination with RNA-seq to study SP expression at different stages of the interaction in Medicago. Our data indicate that most expressed SPs show roughly equal expression levels in the interaction with all three host plants. In addition, a subset shows significant differential expression depending on the host plant. Furthermore, SP expression is controlled locally in the hyphal network in response to host-dependent cues. Overall, this study presents a comprehensive analysis of the R. irregularis secretome, which now offers a solid basis to direct functional studies on the role of fungal SPs in AM symbiosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS Relevant markers of cancer stem cells (CSCs) may serve as commonly used biomarkers of ovarian cancer (OC). However, their actual clinicopathological and prognostic significance remains inconclusive. Thus, we conducted a meta-analysis to quantitatively evaluate the association between the expression of CSC-relevant markers (ALDH1, CD117, CD133, and CD44) and OC. METHODS We used an odds ratio (OR) and a hazard ratio (HR) with a 95% confidence interval (CI) to estimate the effects by analyzing 52 studies from a literature search. Heterogeneity and sensitivity were evaluated, as well. Publication bias was assessed using funnel plots and Egger tests. RESULTS ALDH1 expression was statistically associated with FIGO stage (OR=1.872, 95%CI=1.14-3.076, P=0.013) and lymph invasion (OR=2.78, 95%CI=1.08-7.152, P=0.034). CD117 expression was significantly associated with FIGO stage (OR=2.01, 95%CI=1.35-2.98, P=0.001). CD133 expression was correlated with FIGO stage (OR=3.410, 95%CI=2.196-5.294, P< 0.001) and differentiation grade (OR=2.672, 95%CI=1.354-5.272, P=0.005). CD44s was related to chemotherapy resistance (OR=3.218, 95%CI=1.148-9.016, P=0.026). Furthermore, overexpression of ALDH1 (HR=1.494, 95%CI=1.207-1.849, P< 0.001), CD117 (HR=1.395, 95%CI=1.025-1.898, P=0.034) or CD44s (HR=1.725, 95%CI=1.135-2.623, P=0.011) was associated with poor OS. Further, overexpression of both ALDH1 (HR=1.524, 95%CI=1.158-2.007, P=0.003) and CD44s (HR=2.12, 95%CI=1.692-2.657, P< 0.001) was correlated with worse DFS. CONCLUSION CSC markers are useful predictive or prognostic biomarkers for OC in clinical assessments. Combined detection of CSC marker expression may be a powerful tool for prognostic predictions in clinical practice for patients with OC.

Abstract
A palladium(II)-catalyzed alkene difunctionalization reaction has been developed, wherein B2pin2 is used to trap chelation-stabilized alkylpalladium(II) intermediates that are formed upon nucleopalladation. A range of carbon and nitrogen nucleophiles were found to be suitable coupling partners in this transformation, providing moderate to high yields. Both 3-butenoic and 4-pentenoic acid derivatives were reactive substrate classes, affording β,γ- and γ,δ-difunctionalized carboxylic acid derivatives. This work represents a new strategy to synthesize highly functionalized secondary boronates that complements existing methods.

Abstract
Feed represents two-thirds of the total costs of poultry production, especially in developing countries. Improvement in feed efficiency would reduce the amount of feed required for production (growth or laying), the production cost, and the amount of nitrogenous waste. The most commonly used measures for feed efficiency are feed conversion ratio (FCR) and residual feed intake (RFI). As a more suitable indicator assessing feed efficiency, RFI is defined as the difference between observed and expected feed intake based on maintenance and growth or laying. However, the genetic and biological mechanisms regulating RFI are largely unknown. Identifying molecular mechanisms explaining divergence in RFI in laying ducks would lead to the development of early detection methods for the selection of more efficient breeding poultry. The objective of this study was to identify duodenum genes and pathways through transcriptional profiling in 2 extreme RFI phenotypes (HRFI and LRFI) of the duck population. Phenotypic aspects of feed efficiency showed that RFI was strongly positive with FCR and feed intake (FI). Transcriptomic analysis identified 35 differentially expressed genes between LRFI and HRFI ducks. These genes play an important role in metabolism, digestibility, secretion, and innate immunity including (), (), (), β (), and (). These results improve our knowledge of the biological basis underlying RFI, which would be useful for further investigations of key candidate genes for RFI and for the development of biomarkers.

Abstract
Biomass disks based on fine powder produced from disposed wool fibers were prepared for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). The wool powders (WPs) were modified by silver nanoprisms via an assembly method and then pressed into disks using a hydraulic laboratory pellet press. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to characterize the WPs and disks before and after treatment with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). The WPs retained porous structures after treatment with AgNPs. The silver nanoprisms on WPs were observed clearly and the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) properties of silver nanoprisms led to blue color of wool powder (WP). The obtained WP disks with AgNPs were confirmed to enhance greatly the Raman signal of thiram. The SERS disks are low-cost and convenient to use, with high sensitivity. The characteristic SERS bands of 10-8 M thiram can be identified from WP disks containing silver nanoparticles.

Abstract
In this paper, we demonstrate the use of gliadin/chitosan complex particles (GCCPs) as particulate stabilizers of oil-in-water emulsions of natural oils and water. For this purpose, we fabricated GCCPs through a facile anti-solvent procedure and demonstrated their usage in the formation of Pickering emulsions and Pickering high internal phase emulsions (HIPEs). The GCCPs can be used to produce surfactant-free o/w Pickering emulsions and Pickering HIPEs; unfortunately these emulsions were labile to coalescence. NaCl addition and/or pH regulation, and the combination were used to modify the surface wettability of the complex particles to achieve stable emulsions. The microstructures, e.g., interfacial frameworks, GCCP partition between the continuous phase and interfacial region, and the state of the droplets, of Pickering emulsions were visualized by confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), confirming that the inclusion of NaCl and slightly adjusting pH toward 4.0 and/or 5.0 benefited the adsorption and accumulation of colloid particles at the droplet surface to form an engineered interfacial structure, bridging droplets together through a percolating layer of colloidal particles at the oil/water interface. A schematic representation for the formation route of the emulsions is proposed to relate the physical performance and rheological property with the interfacial structures and aggregate behaviors in the Pickering system stabilized by the complex particles. Interestingly, direct freeze-drying of the emulsions transformed unstable Pickering emulsions into stable oil powders. This study opens a promising route based on Pickering HIPEs or oil powders to structure liquid oils into solid-like fats without artificial trans-fat, which outlines new directions for future fundamental research.

Abstract
An intermolecular 1,2-carboamination of unactivated alkenes proceeding via a Pd(II)/Pd(IV) catalytic cycle has been developed. To realize this transformation, a cleavable bidentate directing group is used to control the regioselectivity of aminopalladation and stabilize the resulting organopalladium(II) intermediate, such that oxidative addition to a carbon electrophile outcompetes potential β-hydride elimination. Under the optimized reaction conditions, a broad range of nitrogen nucleophiles and carbon electrophiles are compatible coupling partners in this reaction, affording moderate to high yields. The products of this reaction can be easily converted to free γ-amino acids and γ-lactams, both of which are common structural motifs found in drug molecules and bioactive compounds. Reaction kinetics and DFT calculations shed light on the mechanism of the reaction and explain empirically observed reactivity trends.
