Abstract
Brainstem noradrenergic neurons, particularly the locus-coeruleus (LC), play a pivotal role in modulating the central stress response and have been implicated in regulating the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. In adult rats, acute stress causes an increase in LC firing and tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) gene expression. While the role of the LC-norepinephrine (LC-NE) system in the adult stress response has been well characterized, there is limited evidence for its participation during development. Previous studies described the neonatal HPA axis as hyporeactive because of stimulus-selective pituitary activation. However, maternal deprivation does reinstate stress-induced endocrine activity and can amplify the neural stress response. Considering that LC neurons can modulate neuroendocrine activity, we hypothesized that the LC-NE system would be stress-responsive during development. Because maternal deprivation (DEP) can alter the central stress response, we examined the LC-NE stress response in both DEP and non-deprived (NDEP) pups. Following an isotonic saline injection (stressor) the time course of TH, c-fos and glucocorticoid receptor (GR) mRNA was examined. Stress-induced TH mRNA was increased in DEP pups at postnatal day (pnd) 12 and in both NDEP and DEP pups at pnd 18. At 15, 30 and 240 min c-fos mRNA was markedly increased in all groups examined. GR mRNA was not altered at pnd 12; however, at pnd 18 NDEP pups showed reduced GR mRNA expression. These data indicate that during ontogeny the LC-NE system is stress-responsive to an acute mild challenge. Activation of LC-NE neurons suggests that this system may participate in modulating the neuroendocrine stress response during development.

Abstract
The present study: (a) determined the effects of both pre- and early postnatal androgen hormonal manipulation on retinal thickness, (b) examined the presence of the aromatase enzyme by immunocytochemistry in retinal tissue and (c) quantified aromatase activity in the rat retina. The results suggest that retinal thickness is influenced by perinatal hormone manipulation via aromatizable androgens that have implications for the sex differences seen in visual information processing and performance.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study investigated the clinical and biological concomitants of electroencephalogram power abnormalities in schizophrenia. METHODS We examined the power characteristics of resting electroencephalograms in 112 schizophrenic patients. Also collected were measures of psychotic symptomatology, brain morphology, ocular motor functioning, electrodermal activity, and nailfold plexus visibility. Seventy-eight nonschizophrenic psychosis patients (e.g., mood disorder patients with psychosis) and 107 nonpsychiatric control subjects were included for comparison. RESULTS Schizophrenic patients whose electroencephalograms were characterized by augmented low-frequency power and diminished alpha-band power had more negative symptoms, larger third ventricles, larger frontal horns of the lateral ventricles, increased cortical sulci widths, and greater ocular motor dysfunction compared with schizophrenic patients without these electroencephalogram characteristics. In nonschizophrenic psychosis patients, augmented low-frequency and diminished alpha-band powers failed to be associated with any clinical or biological indices. CONCLUSIONS Results suggest that clinical and biological concomitants of low-frequency and alpha-band power abnormalities in schizophrenia are unique, perhaps indicating the presence of thalamic and frontal lobe dysfunction.

Abstract
This study's purpose was to develop a reliable and valid self-report questionnaire, the Child-Adolescent Suicidal Potential Index (CASPI), to screen for risk for suicidal behavior in children and adolescents. Four hundred twenty-five child and adolescent psychiatric patients and nonpatients completed the CASPI and other research instruments to rate suicidal and assaultive behavior and symptoms of depression, anxiety, and hopelessness. The 30-item CASPI involves 3 factors (anxious-impulsive depression, suicidal ideation or acts, family distress) that contributed to a unidimensional 2nd-order factor accounting for 59% of the total variance. Internal consistency (alpha) for the total score was .90, and test-retest reliability (ICC) for the total score was .76. Total score distinguished between children and adolescents with different severity of psychopathology and different levels of suicidal and assaultive behavior. Each of the 3 factors had different contributions to discriminating between levels of suicidal status. CASPI total score of 11 distinguished suicidal ideation or acts from nonsuicidal behavior, with sensitivity 70% and specificity 65%. CASPI total score positively correlated with symptom severity of depression, anxiety, and hopelessness.

Abstract
Thirty-five physically abusive fathers were matched with a comparison sample to test multiple systemic explanations for child physical abuse, using an ecological perspective, and to show the relationship between the structure of social ties and the function of those ties. The physically abusive fathers were found to have received significantly fewer emotional and instrumental supports from their friends, in-laws, and other kin than the comparison fathers, and were only weakly linked to members of their social networks--members who might have discouraged the fathers' aggressive impulses or provided additional support to them and to their families.

Abstract
This study examined relations among parents' perceptions of their childhood, attitudes about life, expectations for child behavior, attitudes about their child's behavior, and the child-rearing environment parents provide. Eighty mothers of 1- to 5-year-olds were interviewed about perceptions of receiving harsh parenting as children, current attitudes about life, developmental expectations, and views of intentionality and severity of their child's misbehavior. The home environment was measured using the Home Observation for Measurement of the Environment (R. H. Bradley & B. Caldwell, 1979) scale. Mothers who reported harsh parenting as children, negative attitudes about life, and unrealistic developmental expectations had negative attitudes about their own child. These attitudes were related to provision of lower quality home environments. Results support a constructivist approach to understanding parental social cognitions and behavior.

Abstract
This study examined mood disturbance among women with metastatic breast cancer in relationship to partnership status, relationship quality, and partner's coping and mood disturbance. These associations were examined within a total sample of 125 metastatic breast cancer patients and a subsample of 48 of these patients and their partners. Partnered and single women were indistinguishable in mood disturbance when household income was statistically controlled. Results also showed that patients were less distressed when they rated the relationship higher in Cohesion--Expression and in Conflict and when their partners reported lower mood disturbance. One possible implication of these results is that in relationships in which a woman has metastatic cancer, she may benefit from open engagement of difficulties and conflict. Furthermore, alleviating her distress may be better achieved by focus on the couple relationship rather than her individual coping.

Abstract
Scaling of time (age) in latent growth curve (LGC) models has important implications for studies of development. When participants begin a study at different ages, sample means and covariance-based structural equation modeling (SEM) approaches produce biased estimates of the variance of the intercept and the covariance between the Intercept and Slope factors. However, individual data vector-based SEM approaches produce proper estimates of these parameters that are identical to those produced by multilevel modeling (MLM). Scaling of the time variable also raises issues regarding the interpretation of within- and between-persons effects of time that parallel those associated with centering of predictor variables in MLM. A numerical example is used to illustrate these issues, and an Mx script for fitting individual data vector-based LGC models is provided.

Abstract
During development, the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is normally hyporesponsive between postnatal days (pnd) 4 and 14. This interval has been designated as the stress-hyporesponsive period (SHRP). Recent evidence indicates that the neonate can respond to selective stimuli, i.e., exposure to immune signals. The purpose of this study was to investigate the neural correlates of the neonatal stress axis in response to a stimulus that activates the pituitary-adrenal hormones. Thus, lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was administered to neonates at three ages (pnd 6, 12, and 18) during or after the SHRP. In an effort to understand the neonatal hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN) response to an endotoxin, we measured c-fos immunoreactivity and corticotrophin-releasing hormone (CRH) gene expression. At all ages tested, there was an increase in ACTH and corticosterone (CORT) following LPS compared to controls. During the SHRP, LPS treatment resulted in a marked increase in Fos-positive cells in the PVN, whereas a saline injection had no effect. However, at pnd 18, both LPS and a saline injection elicited equivalent PVN Fos expression. In contrast to the effect on Fos, LPS and a saline injection decreased CRH mRNA at pnd 6 and 12. Outside the SHRP, LPS resulted in an increase in CRH gene expression relative to saline-injected controls. Thus, while the LPS-induced activation of Fos protein and plasma hormones were concordant, CRH mRNA did not positively correlate with the peripheral response. This suggests that the SHRP is not absolute, and the brain is responsive to some stimuli during this period.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The burdens experienced by relatives of mentally ill persons are substantial. AIMS To study the relationship between family burden and sociocultural context. METHOD A comparative study of Euro-Americans and Latinos ascertained whether dimensions of family response are (a) non-specific to diagnostic groups; and/or (b) variable across cultural settings. RESULTS Regardless of diagnosis or ethnicity, patient misery was found most burdensome and distressing. However, considerable difference in shades of meaning and nuance across groups appears in relation to what is classed similarly as 'misery'. Only gender was significantly associated with social performance (males reported to have greater deficits). A complex cultural ecological effect was observed among the Latino-schizophrenia group. CONCLUSIONS Findings suggest similarities and differences in levels of family burden in relation to socio-cultural factors across cultural and diagnostic groups. The specificity of results by objective and subjective measures, types of burden, gender, ethnicity, diagnosis, and living situation confirm the importance of context and heterogeneity in understanding family burden and distress.

Abstract
The success of the 15O-water PET technique to localize statistically significant changes in regional cerebral blood flow is dependent on factors such as the activity level injected and the magnitude of the flow change. Undetectable changes may occur if insufficient activity is injected leading to high levels of statistical noise or the task performed results in only small changes in blood flow. To explore the relationship between injected activity and statistical significance, we performed a series of studies with the ECAT EXACT HR+, a high resolution PET tomograph. A parametric verbal working memory task (the N-back task) was selected to examine the relationship between regional cerebral blood flow and working memory load across a range of injected doses of 15O-water. At each activity level the volunteers were required to perform four different levels of the N-back task, a task in which a letter displayed on a monitor is matched with the letter displayed N letters previously. With increasing N, this task places increased load on working memory. For this study, 5, 10, and 15 mCi of 15O-water were injected into nine normal volunteers. The complete sequence of four tasks (N = 0, 1, 2, and 3) at three activity levels was repeated twice, for a total of 24 injections of 15O-water. We show that the peak count rate performance for the HR+ is approached at injected activity levels of 15O-water around 15 mCi. For this particular choice of N-back task, robust activation maps can nevertheless be obtained with as little as 5 mCi injected dose.

Abstract
The role of the homing pigeon hippocampal formation was examined in the development of loft fidelity and landmark navigation. During the course of five summers, different groups of young pigeons (hippocampal-lesioned, control-lesioned, and unoperated controls) were given free flight experience followed by short distance training and experimental releases. In Experiment 1, a census of which loft each pigeon entered revealed that hippocampal lesioned pigeons displayed less loft fidelity than controls. In Experiment 2 and 3, the percent of young birds lost during their first summer of training and their first experimental release was examined. Despite displaying similarly good homeward-oriented vanishing bearings, significantly more hippocampal lesioned pigeons were lost compared to control groups. The results support the hypothesis that the homing pigeon hippocampal formation participates in the learning/operation of a spatial representation of local landmarks near the loft that can be used for loft recognition and navigation.

Abstract
To examine whether the avian hippocampus-parahippocampus (HF) is necessary for nonspatial, paired-associate learning, as has been suggested for rodents, HF-lesioned and control homing pigeons were tested on a visual paired-associate learning task. Both groups learned equally well to discriminate trials that consisted of a stimulus preceded by its paired associate from trials that consisted of a stimulus preceded by stimuli from other paired associates (mispair trials), even when a mispair was experienced for the first time. The groups also learned equally well not to respond to 2 stimuli that were never rewarded. The results demonstrate that HF lesions do not impair nonspatial paired-associate learning in birds, suggesting that the role of HF in nonspatial cognition differs between birds and mammals.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To test the efficacy of a group-administered cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy (CBT) protocol for pediatric posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after a single-incident stressor. METHOD After a school-wide selection-to-treatment procedure conducted in two elementary and two junior high schools, children and adolescents with DSM-IV PTSD by structured interview were entered into an 18-week, group-administered CBT protocol using a single case across time and setting experimental design. Assessments of PTSD, anxiety, depression, trait anger, locus of control, and disruptive behavior were conducted at baseline, posttreatment, and at 6-month follow-up. RESULTS Experimental control across time (staggered start date) and setting (school and age) was demonstrated. Fourteen of 17 subjects completed treatment. Of these, 8 (57%) no longer met DSM-IV criteria for PTSD immediately after treatment; 12 (86%) of 14 were free of PTSD at 6-month follow-up. On intent-to-treat analyses, treatment produced a robust beneficial effect posttreatment on the Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale-Child and Adolescent Version, with additional improvement accruing at follow-up (p < .001). Improvements of a similar magnitude were seen for depression (p < .001), anxiety (p < .001), and anger (p < .005). Locus of control remained external from pre- to posttreatment but became strongly internal at follow-up (p < .001). CONCLUSION More clinical trials are required to confirm that CBT is a safe, acceptable, and effective treatment for PTSD in children and adolescents.

Abstract
To explain why the depressive realism effect has been found in trivial, artificial laboratory but not in more realistic or emotionally engaging situations, the authors hypothesized that depressed people overcompensate for a tendency toward maladaptive experiential (intuitive) processing by exercising excessive rational control in trivial situations. In more consequential situations, they are unable to control their maladaptive experiential processing because it is excessive, or their rational control is insufficient, or both. As predicted, a subclinically depressed group (n = 39) made more optimal decisions than a nondepressed control group (n = 36) under trivial conditions, and the groups converged under more consequential conditions, with the depressed group responding less and the control group more optimally. Also, the depressed group reported engaging in less rational processing and in more maladaptive experiential processing in everyday life than did the control group.

Abstract
This article reviews attempts to characterize the mental operations mediated by left inferior prefrontal cortex, especially the anterior and inferior portion of the gyrus, with the functional neuroimaging techniques of positron emission tomography and functional magnetic resonance imaging. Activations in this region occur during semantic, relative to nonsemantic, tasks for the generation of words to semantic cues or the classification of words or pictures into semantic categories. This activation appears in the right prefrontal cortex of people known to be atypically right-hemisphere dominant for language. In this region, activations are associated with meaningful encoding that leads to superior explicit memory for stimuli and deactivations with implicit semantic memory (repetition priming) for words and pictures. New findings are reported showing that patients with global amnesia show deactivations in the same region associated with repetition priming, that activation in this region reflects selection of a response from among numerous relative to few alternatives, and that activations in a portion of this region are associated specifically with semantic relative to phonological processing. It is hypothesized that activations in left inferior prefrontal cortex reflect a domain-specific semantic working memory capacity that is invoked more for semantic than nonsemantic analyses regardless of stimulus modality, more for initial than for repeated semantic analysis of a word or picture, more when a response must be selected from among many than few legitimate alternatives, and that yields superior later explicit memory for experiences.

Abstract
NMDA receptors, a class of glutamate-gated cation channels with high Ca2+ conductance, mediate fast transmission and plasticity of central excitatory synapses. We show here that gene-targeted mice expressing NMDA receptors without the large intracellular C-terminal domain of any one of three NR2 subunits phenotypically resemble mice made deficient in that particular subunit. Mice expressing the NR2B subunit in a C-terminally truncated form (NR2B(deltaC/deltaC) mice) die perinatally. NR2A(deltaC/deltaC) mice are viable but exhibit impaired synaptic plasticity and contextual memory. These and NR2C(deltaC/deltaC) mice display deficits in motor coordination. C-terminal truncation of NR2 subunits does not interfere with the formation of gateable receptor channels that can be synaptically activated. Thus, the phenotypes of our mutants appear to reflect defective intracellular signaling.

Abstract
Data from a national survey were used to investigate the help-seeking efforts of Latinas (Mexican, Mexican American, Puerto Rican) and Anglo American women who experienced battering by intimate partners. The findings revealed that battered Latinas were significantly younger, less educated, and more impoverished than Anglo women. Additionally, Latinas more often categorized their marriages as male dominated and their husbands as heavy drinkers. Bivariate analyses showed that Latinas who sought help were significantly more acculturated and more likely to have a heavy drinking husband than those who did not seek help. Although battered women were active help seekers, Latinas underutilized both informal and formal resources relative to Anglo women, with Mexican women least likely to seek assistance. When sociodemographic predictors of help seeking were analyzed, being youthful and Anglo significantly increased the odds of help-seeking efforts. Low acculturation, as measured by preference for the Spanish language, was the only significant cultural barrier to help seeking by Latinas. Implications for treatment include improved outreach and advocacy to underserved groups.

Abstract
From 536 patients with the CREST syndrome (calcinosis, Raynaud's phenomenon, esophageal dysmotility, sclerodactyly, and telangiectasis), seven were identified as having peripheral neuropathy not attributable to another cause. Peripheral neuropathy developed 0 to 25 years after their first symptoms of scleroderma. Unexplained neuropathy in CREST patients (seven patients) was more frequent than in control subjects (two patients) matched for age, sex, time of evaluation, and geographic referral region. Multiple mononeuropathy occurred significantly more frequently in the CREST group (six patients) than in the control group (0 patients). Four sural nerve biopsy specimens from the CREST patients demonstrated multifocal fiber loss and perivascular inflammation; one was diagnostic for necrotizing vasculitis and two others were highly suggestive for necrotizing vasculitis. The density of myelinated fibers in three nerves from CREST patients was significantly decreased, whereas the index of dispersion (a measure of multifocal fiber loss) was increased, and the frequency of axonal degeneration was significantly increased. Based on these clinical and pathologic findings, we conclude that in the CREST syndrome multiple mononeuropathy, although occurring infrequently, occurs more frequently than by chance and necrotizing vasculitis is the cause of this multiple mononeuropathy.

Abstract
Stimulus control of food-site recognition and role of the hippocampal formation (HF) were investigated. Control and HF-lesioned pigeons were trained to find food located in a colored bowl, near a landmark beacon, in a constant room location. During later test trials, the sources of information were individually removed and/or disassociated. For all test trial types, HF-lesioned pigeons consistently chose bowls associated with one of the training stimuli. Controls were more sensitive to the changes introduced during the test trials; choosing like HF-lesioned pigeons on some test trials but choosing randomly on others. The data identify a critical role of the avian HF in learning the spatial relationship among environmental stimuli.

Abstract
The minimum audible angle is the smallest angular separation at which two sounds are perceived as coming from distinct sources. To determine the spatial acuity of hearing in crickets, we measured minimum audible angles at various locations in azimuth and elevation. Crickets (Teleogryllus oceanicus) were able to discriminate between sources separated by 11.25 degrees (1/32 of a circle) in azimuth directly ahead of them; acuity declined to 45 degrees in azimuth for sound sources 90 degrees to the side and then improved to 33.75 degrees at the rear. Crickets were also able to discriminate between sources separated in elevation, although acuity was much poorer, ranging from 45 degrees at the front and rear of the animal to 90 degrees below the animal. A habituation-dishabituation test was used to test discrimination. This involved presenting a train of ultrasound pulses from one location, habituating the cricket's escape response. This train was followed by a test pulse of ultrasound from another location, after which a final pulse was presented from the original source. If the test pulse was discriminated from the habituating pulses, then the response to the final pulse was dishabituated. To determine the minimum audible angle, we repeated such tests while moving the two sound sources closer together until dishabituation no longer occurred.

Abstract
Mice deficient in monoamine oxidase A (MAOA), an enzyme that metabolizes monoamines such as norepinephrine and serotonin, have elevated norepinephrine and serotonin levels in the frontal cortex, hippocampus, and cerebellum, compared with normal wild-type mice. Since monoamines in these areas are critically involved in a variety of behaviors, we examined learning and memory (using emotional and motor tasks) in MAOA mutant mice. The MAOA-deficient mice exhibited significantly enhanced classical fear conditioning (freezing to both tone and contextual stimuli) and step-down inhibitory avoidance learning. In contrast, eyeblink conditioning was normal in these mutant mice. The female MAOA-deficient mice also displayed normal species-typical maternal behaviors (nesting, nursing, and pup retrieval). These results suggest that chronic elevations of monoamines, due to a deletion of the gene encoding MAOA, lead to selective alterations in emotional behavior.

Abstract
There is increasing evidence that, in addition to its major functional role in the regulation of fine motor control, the cerebellum is involved in other important functions, such as sensory-motor learning and memory. Classical conditioning of the eyeblink or nictitating membrane response (and other discrete behavioral responses) is a form of sensory-motor learning that depends crucially upon the cerebellum. Within the cerebellum, however, the relative importance of the cerebellar cortex and the deep cerebellar nuclei in eyeblink conditioning is unclear and disputed. Recent studies employing various mutant mice provide an effective approach to resolving this controversy. Eyeblink conditioning in spontaneous mutant mice deficit in Purkinje cells, the exclusive output neurons of the cerebellar cortex, indicate that both the cerebellar cortex and the interpositus nucleus are important. Furthermore, studies involving gene knockout mice suggest that long-term depression, a process of synaptic plasticity occurring in Purkinje cells, might be involved in eyeblink conditioning.

Abstract
In a previous study of 10 drug-naive schizophrenic patients, the density of D2 dopamine receptors was found to be elevated in the caudate nucleus. The study raised questions about the influence of the age of the patients, the relationship of receptor density to psychosis, and the accuracy of the method used to obtain this evidence. Using positron emission tomography and constrained analysis of the brain uptake of the radioligand N-[11C]methyl-spiperone ([11C]NMSP), we tested four questions: Were the assumptions underlying the quantitation valid? Is there an age decline of the density of D2-like dopamine receptors in drug-naive schizophrenia and bipolar illness? If so, is it different from that observed in normal aging? Are D2-like dopamine receptors elevated at any age in either drug-naive schizophrenic or psychotic bipolar illness patients? NMSP and haloperidol partition volumes and plasma protein fractions were not significantly different among patient groups and normal volunteers. The model-derived assay of radioligand metabolites in plasma was confirmed by high-performance liquid chromatography in the patient groups. D2-like dopamine receptors declined with age, and the slope did not differ significantly between the schizophrenic patients, bipolar affective illness patients, and normal controls. Taking the effect of age into account, increases in D2 dopamine receptor density were found in seven psychotic patients with bipolar affective illness compared with seven nonpsychotic patients and 24 control subjects as well as in 22 drug-naive schizophrenic patients compared with the 24 control subjects.

Abstract
Dopamine receptor density is believed to decline in normal aging. To test this hypothesis, we measured the density of dopamine D2-like receptors in vivo in the neostriatum of normal living humans by using the graphical method. This method determines the D2-like dopamine receptor density in the human brain with an occupying ligand (unlabeled haloperidol) and a radioligand (labeled 3-N-methylspiperone). The method was examined critically, and the assumptions underlying the method were shown to be valid. The validation included comparison of the representation of tracer metabolism by high-pressure liquid chromatography and model assays, calculation of the lumped constant Dw from the value of its components, and comparable tracer partition coefficients in vitro and in vivo. In error analysis, the method consistently performed as well as the direct least-squares regression at statistical noise levels appropriate for the tomograph used in these studies. The method revealed that the density of the D2-like receptors that bind haloperidol in the caudate nucleus of normal humans declined 1% per year after the age of 18 years.
