Abstract
BACKGROUND Food pantry clients have high rates of food insecurity and greater risk for and prevalence of diet-related diseases. Many clients face time, resource, and physical constraints that limit their ability to prepare healthy meals using foods typically provided by pantries. We compared two novel approaches to alleviate those barriers and encourage healthier eating: meal kits, which bundle ingredients with a recipe on how to prepare a healthy meal, and nutritious no-prep meals, which can be eaten after thawing or microwaving. METHODS Participants were adult pantry clients from a large food pantry in the Southern sector of Dallas, Texas. We conducted a repeated measures between-subjects study with 70 clients randomized to receive 14-days of meal kits (n = 35) or no-prep meals (n = 35). Participants completed questionnaires at baseline and two-week follow-up on demographics, hedonic liking of study meals, perceived dietary quality, and food security. Two-way repeated measures analysis of variance was used to examine group and time effects, and group by time interactions. We also describe feasibility and satisfaction outcomes to inform future implementation. RESULTS Sixty-six participants completed the study (94%). Participants were predominantly Hispanic or Latino(a) (63%) and African American or Black (31%) women (90%). There was a significant interaction on hedonic liking of study meals (ηp²=0.16, F(1,64) = 11.78, p < .001), such that participants that received meal kits had greater improvements in hedonic liking over time than participants in the no-prep group. We observed significant improvements in perceived dietary quality (ηp²=0.36, F(1,64) = 36.38, p < .001) and food security (ηp²=0.36, F(1,64) = 36.38, p < .001) across both groups over time, but no between group differences or significant interactions indicating one intervention was more effective than the other. Program satisfaction was high across both groups, but higher among the meal kit group (ηp²=0.09, F(1,64) = 6.28, p = .015). CONCLUSIONS Results suggest nutritious meal kits and no-prep meals may be desirable nutrition intervention strategies for pantry clients and have potential to increase food security and perceived dietary quality in the short-term. Our findings are limited by a small sample and short follow-up. Future studies should continue to test both interventions, and include longer follow-up, objective measures of dietary quality, and relevant clinical outcomes. Abstract
OBJECTIVE Most food retailers display foods in prominent locations as a marketing strategy (i.e. 'placement promotions'). We examined the extent to which households with children change their food and beverage purchases in response to these promotions. DESIGN We analysed a novel dataset of all products promoted in two supermarkets from 2016 to 2017, including promotion dates and locations (e.g. aisle endcaps and front registers). We linked promotions to all purchases from the supermarkets from 2016 to 2017 by a cohort of households with children. We calculated the number of weekly promotions in each of thirteen food and beverage groups (e.g. bread; candy) and used fixed effects regressions to estimate associations between number of weekly promotions and households' weekly food purchases, overall and by Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) participation. SETTING Two large supermarkets in Maine, USA. PARTICIPANTS Eight hundred and twenty-one households with children. RESULTS Most promotions (74 %) were for less healthy foods. The most promoted food groups were sweet and salty snacks (mean = 131·0 promotions/week), baked goods (mean = 68·2) and sugar-sweetened beverages (mean = 41·6). Households generally did not change their food group purchases during weeks when they were exposed to more promotions for those groups, except that a 1-sd increase in endcap candy promotions (about 1 promotion/week) was associated with $0·19/week (about 14·5 %) increase in candy purchases among SNAP nonparticipants (adjusted P < 0·001). CONCLUSIONS In-store placement promotions for food groups were generally not associated with purchases of promoted food groups, perhaps because exposure to unhealthy food marketing was consistently high. Substantial changes to in-store food marketing may be needed to promote healthier purchases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Participation in the US Department of Agriculture's summer meals program is consistently lower compared to National School Lunch Program (NSLP) participation, even though the programs target the same population of children. The purpose of this study was to elucidate reasons for participation and nonparticipation in the summer meals program. METHODS A nationally representative sample of 4688 households with children ages 5 through 18 years living near a summer meals site in 2018 completed a survey about their reasons for participation or nonparticipation in the summer meals program, features that would help nonparticipants to attend, and household food security status. RESULTS Almost half of all households living near a summer meal site were food insecure (45%) and most (77%) had incomes at or below 130% of the federal poverty level. Most participant caregivers (74%) sent their children to summer meal sites for the free meals, while 46% of nonparticipant caregivers said they did not attend because they were unaware of the program. CONCLUSIONS Despite a high level of food insecurity among all households, the most reported reason for not attending the summer meals program was unawareness of the program. These findings highlight a need for better program visibility and outreach.

Abstract
We investigated the adequacy of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits for Indiana households. Methods included focus groups, interviews, and a statewide survey of 652 households. SNAP benefit-level increases over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic increased their adequacy overall yet were still inadequate for some households. As of June 2022, Indiana households reported their SNAP benefits lasting 13 days a month. The inadequacy of SNAP benefits reveals that some participating households still experience food insecurity, which has adverse public health implications. Abstract
OBJECTIVE As a new type of consumer subject in the market that was formerly dominated by multiple person families, single households are driving the change in the buying structure. Food purchase activities have undergone significant changes since the outbreak of the COVID-19. The objective of this study was to assess and compare variations in food consumption, purchase and handling during the COVID-19 pandemic between single person households (SPH) and multiple person households. METHOD A cross-sectional study conducted among 211 individuals in communities in Harris and Waller Counties, Texas. Sociodemographic, food purchase, food consumption and food handling activities during the COVID-19 pandemic were assessed with a validated COVID-19 Nutrition questionnaire. RESULTS Non-Hispanic Black participants constituted 42.6%, and 28.4% were Hispanics. Participants were made up of mostly aged 18-24 years (39.3%), 47.9% single household composition, 30.4% in full time employment, and 29.1% partook in food assistance programs. A large proportion of them had never used grocery pickup services, online grocery shopping and a farmers' market. During the COVID-19 pandemic, majority of the participants used more of large supermarkets, restaurant/fast food, and online grocery but food consumption seemed to remain the same for the majority of participants. For beverages, majority of participants consumed more water, less soda, and no alcohol. There was a significant association between single person household and higher restaurant/fast foods purchase. Many of the participants reported weight gain and less physical activity during the pandemic. CONCLUSION Restaurant meal purchases was more prevalent in single-person families. The results from the study have the potential to contribute to how public policy officials, food service, and health authorities forecast how different categories of consumers will react in pandemics and may be used to inform area-specific alleviation strategies to minimize the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and future events.

Abstract
The Gus Schumacher Nutrition Incentive Program (GusNIP) is a federally funded grant program that provides nutrition incentives-subsidies for purchasing fruits and vegetables (FV)-to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) participants. GusNIP currently advances nutrition equity by improving FV access for people with low incomes, yet inequities exist within GusNIP. We sought to identify inequities in GusNIP at the community, organization, partner, and individual levels and develop recommendations for farm bill provisions to make the program more equitable. In Spring 2021, a group of nutrition incentive experts (n = 11) from across the country convened to discuss opportunities to enhance equity in GusNIP. The iterative recommendation development process included feedback from key stakeholders (n = 15) and focus group participants with GusNIP lived experience (n = 12). Eleven recommendations to advance equity in GusNIP in the farm bill emerged across six categories: (1) increase total GusNIP funding, (2) increase funding and support to lower-resourced organizations and impacted communities, (3) eliminate the match requirement, (4) support statewide expansion, (5) expand and diversify retailer participation, and (6) expand program marketing. Including these recommendations in the upcoming and future farm bills would equitably expand GusNIP for SNAP participants, program grantees, and communities across the country.

Abstract
PURPOSE To describe the prevalence of food insecurity among pregnant and parenting women with opioid use disorder (OUD), its association with psychosocial health, and their experience with the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women Infant Child (WIC) program. DESIGN This cross-sectional study collected survey data through REDCAP. SETTING The study was conducted at a single, urban, opioid treatment program. SUBJECTS A total of 91 female participants (≥18 years of age and receiving OUD treatment services) were approached about the study and all consented. MEASURES Measures included: US Household Short Form Food Security Survey, Patient Health Questionnaire 4(PHQ4), Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), and a demographics and food behavior survey. ANALYSIS Descriptive analyses (frequency, means) described data and Chi-Square, Fischer's exact, t-tests were used to compare data between food security groups. RESULTS Participants were on average 34 years old, Caucasian (68%), and non-Hispanic (87%). Most reported low (32%) to very low (33%) food security. Pearson correlation analyses indicate a strong positive linear relationship between Food Security Score and PHQ4 Total (P = .0002), PHQ4 Depression (P = .0003), PHQ4 Anxiety (P = .0009), and PSS Total (P < .0001). Only 38% felt the foods available in WIC supported their breastfeeding. Limitations include a single site and recall bias. CONCLUSIONS Significant nutritional inequity in families affected by maternal substance use exists, with potential for adverse maternal and child development related implications.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Evaluation of California Department of Public Health's three-year social marketing campaign (Be Better) to encourage healthy eating and water consumption among Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program-Education (SNAP-Ed) California mothers. Andreasen's social marketing framework was used to outline the development and evaluation of the campaign. DESIGN Quantitative, pre-post cross-sectional study with three cohorts nested within survey years. Generalised estimating equation modeling was used to obtain population estimates of campaign reach and changes in mothers' fruit and vegetable (FV) consumption and facilitative actions towards their children's health behaviours. SETTING CalFresh Healthy Living (California's SNAP-Ed). PARTICIPANTS Three separate cohorts of SNAP mothers were surveyed (pre, post) between 2016 and 2018 inclusive. A total of 2229 mothers (ages 18-59) self-identified as White, Latina, African American or Asian/Pacific Islander participated. RESULTS Approximately 82 percent of surveyed mothers were aware of the campaign as assessed by measures of recall and recognition. Ad awareness was positively associated with mothers' FV consumption (R2 = 0·45), with the proportion of FV on plates and with behaviours that facilitate children's FV consumption and limit unhealthy snacks and sugary drinks (βs ranged from 0·1 to 0·7). CONCLUSIONS The campaign successfully reached 82 percent of surveyed mothers. Positive associations between California's Be Better campaign and targeted health behaviours were observed, although the associations varied by year and media channel (i.e. television, radio, billboards and digital). Most associations between ad awareness and outcomes were noted in years two and three of the campaign, suggesting that more than 1 year of campaign exposure was necessary for associations to emerge.

Abstract
BACKGROUND An objective of the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) is to improve maternal diet quality, but its effectiveness remains unclear. Better understanding how WIC participation shapes women's diet quality is crucial given that maternal diet plays a critical role in determining mothers' and children's short- and long-term overall health. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to compare the diet quality of WIC-participating women to WIC-eligible nonparticipating women and higher-income pregnant and postpartum women using a nationally representative sample. METHODS This was a cross-sectional analysis of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-2018 cycles. Women aged 20 to 44 with at least one 24-h recall and complete data on pregnancy and postpartum status and WIC participation were included (n = 626). Diet quality was evaluated using the Healthy Eating Index-2015 (HEI-2015). Multivariable Tukey-adjusted linear models were used to compare HEI-2015 total and component scores between groups. Models were adjusted for age, pregnancy and postpartum status, breastfeeding status, race and ethnicity, and food security. RESULTS Most women were postpartum and not pregnant (75%), nonbreastfeeding (60%), identified as non-Hispanic White (58%), and food secure (64%). WIC participants, WIC-eligible nonparticipants, and income-ineligible women had mean Total HEI-2015 scores of 52.7 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 50.6, 54.8), 54.2 (95% CI: 51.6, 56.7), and 55.0 (95% CI: 51.8, 58.2), respectively. There were no differences between groups for total and most component scores. Income-ineligible women had better Fatty Acids scores (5.7; 95% CI: 5.0, 6.4) than WIC participants (4.7; 95% CI: 4.1, 5.3; P < 0.05). WIC-eligible nonparticipants had better Refined Grains scores (6.0; 95% CI: 5.3, 6.6) than WIC participants (5.0; 95% CI: 4.4, 5.6; P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Overall diet quality was similar across WIC and income groups. Lower HEI-2015 component scores for WIC participants compared with WIC-eligible nonparticipants warrant further exploration. Research evaluating WIC's impact on maternal diet quality is needed to ensure continued support for low-income women's health.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The current study presents results of a midpoint analysis of an ongoing natural experiment evaluating the diet-related effects of the Minneapolis Minimum Wage Ordinance, which incrementally increases the minimum wage to $15/h. DESIGN A difference-in-difference (DiD) analysis of measures collected among low-wage workers in two U.S. cities (one city with a wage increase policy and one comparison city). Measures included employment-related variables (hourly wage, hours worked and non-employment assessed by survey questions with wages verified by paystubs), BMI measured by study scales and stadiometers and diet-related mediators (food insecurity, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) participation and daily servings of fruits and vegetables, whole-grain rich foods and foods high in added sugars measured by survey questions). SETTING Minneapolis, Minnesota and Raleigh, North Carolina. PARTICIPANTS A cohort of 580 low-wage workers (268 in Minneapolis and 312 in Raleigh) who completed three annual study visits between 2018 and 2020. RESULTS In DiD models adjusted for time-varying and non-time-varying confounders, there were no statistically significant differences in variables of interest in Minneapolis compared with Raleigh. Trends across both cities were evident, showing a steady increase in hourly wage, stable BMI, an overall decrease in food insecurity and non-linear trends in employment, hours worked, SNAP participation and dietary outcomes. CONCLUSION There was no evidence of a beneficial or adverse effect of the Minimum Wage Ordinance on health-related variables during a period of economic and social change. The COVID-19 pandemic and other contextual factors likely contributed to the observed trends in both cities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND State expansion of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) eligibility under broad-based categorical eligibility (BBCE) is associated with decreases in household poverty and food insecurity, child protective services investigations, and mental health and substance use disorders among adults, key contributors to foster care entry. OBJECTIVE To examine the association of state expansion of SNAP eligibility under BBCE with rates of foster care entries. PARTICIPANTS Foster care entries among children ages <18 years. METHODS We used 2005-2019 data from the SNAP Policy Database and the Adoption and Foster Care Analysis and Reporting System (AFCARS). We conducted difference-in-differences analyses and generated event study plots adjusting for state economic conditions (percent population unemployed, median household income) and policies (minimum wage, refundable Earned Income Tax Credits, maximum Temporary Assistance for Needy Families benefit for a family of 3). RESULTS On average, there were 1.8 fewer foster care entries (95 % confidence interval (CI) -2.8, -0.8) per 1000 children per year in states that expanded SNAP eligibility than there would have been if they had not expanded eligibility. Average decreases in foster care entries were similar among young (-1.7 per 1000 children per year, 95 % -3.1, -0.3) and school-age (-1.8 per 1000 children per year, 95 % CI -2.7, -0.8) children and larger among Black non-Hispanic (-5.6 per 1000 children per year, 95 % CI -9.1, -2.0) than among White non-Hispanic (-1.4 per 1000 children per year, 95 % CI -2.2, -0.6) children. The magnitude of these decreases increased with greater time since policy adoption. CONCLUSIONS Results add to growing evidence that programs and policies that support and stabilize household economic and material conditions may contribute to reductions in foster care entries at the population-level.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study explored programme recipients' and deliverers' experiences and perceived outcomes of accessing or facilitating a grocery gift card (GGC) programme from I Can for Kids (iCAN), a community-based programme that provides GGC to low-income families with children. DESIGN This qualitative descriptive study used Freedman et al's framework of nutritious food access to guide data generation and analysis. Semi-structured interviews were conducted between August and November 2020. Data were analysed using directed content analysis with a deductive-inductive approach. PARTICIPANTS Fifty-four participants were purposively recruited, including thirty-seven programme recipients who accessed iCAN's GGC programme and seventeen programme deliverers who facilitated it. SETTING Calgary, Alberta, Canada. RESULTS Three themes were generated from the data. First, iCAN's GGC programme promoted a sense of autonomy and dignity among programme recipients as they appreciated receiving financial support, the flexibility and convenience of using GGC, and the freedom to select foods they desired. Recipients perceived these benefits improved their social and emotional well-being. Second, recipients reported that the use of GGC improved their households' dietary patterns and food skills. Third, both participant groups identified programmatic strengths and limitations. CONCLUSION Programme recipients reported that iCAN's GGC programme provided them with dignified access to nutritious food and improved their households' finances, dietary patterns, and social and emotional well-being. Increasing the number of GGC provided to households on each occasion, establishing clear and consistent criteria for distributing GGC to recipients, and increasing potential donors' awareness of iCAN's GGC programme may augment the amount of support iCAN could provide to households.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the moderation effect of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) participation on the baseline fruit and vegetable (FV) intake of Hispanic/Latino and African American children and parents participating in the Brighter Bites program. DESIGN Cross-sectional. SETTING Houston, Austin, and Dallas, TX; Washington, DC; and Southwest Florida. PARTICIPANTS Self-reported surveys (n = 6,037) of Hispanic/Latino and African American adult-child dyads enrolled in Brighter Bites in Fall 2018. VARIABLES MEASURED Dependent variable, child FV intake; Independent variable, parent FV intake, and FV shopping behavior; Effect Measure Modifier, SNAP participation. ANALYSIS Quantitatively used mixed effects linear regression models to test if the effect of parental baseline FV intake and shopping behavior on a child's baseline FV intake differed by SNAP participation. Analyses were performed using STATA with significance set at P < 0.05 and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS For parents that consumed FV ≥ 2 times/d at baseline, there was a 0.1 times increase in child FV intake at baseline among those who participated in SNAP as compared with those who did not participate in SNAP (ß = 0.1; 95% CI, 0.1-0.2; P = 0.001), and for parents who shopped at convenience stores ≥ 2 times/wk for FV, there was 0.6 times increase in child FV intake at baseline for those who participated in SNAP as compared with those that did not participate in SNAP (ß = 0.6; 95% CI, 0.3-0.9; P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program participation moderated the associations between FV intake among African American and Hispanic/Latino parents and children and FV shopping at convenience stores and child FV intake. Findings indicate a need for future interventions to promote SNAP participation among those eligible and improve access to FV.

Abstract
Food insecurity is a national issue that disproportionately impacts Louisiana citizens, contributing to the state's poor health outcomes. We know that the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and food pantries improve access to food, but we have limited data on what interventions improve food insecurity. The Geaux Get Healthy Clinical Program at Our Lady of the Lake (GGHOLOL) is a clinic-based community program that leverages community partnerships and a clinical setting to provide education and access to resources for individuals with food insecurity. This prospective study examines the impact of GGHOLOL on food insecurity as a pre-post survey evaluation over a two-year period. A total of 57 research participants with food insecurity completed the program. Mean food security scores improved at completion of GGHOLOL, and these scores further improved 6 months after enrollment. Furthermore, participants demonstrated sustainable improvements in healthy eating, cooking, and shopping behaviors. Lastly, participants improved their overall depression scores at the completion of the program with sustainable improvement at 6 months. With the improvement in GGHOLOL on food insecurity and nutrition behaviors, GGHOLOL may serve as a model for other programs addressing food insecurity in the future.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) is among the largest U.S. social safety net programs. Although strong evidence exists regarding the benefits of WIC, take-up (i.e., participation among eligible individuals) has steadily declined in the past decade. This study addresses gaps in our knowledge regarding predictors of WIC take-up during this time. METHODS Data were drawn from the 1998-2017 waves of the National Health Interview Study (NHIS), a serial cross-sectional study of the U.S. POPULATION The analytic sample included 23,645 children and 10,297 women eligible for WIC based on self-reported demographic characteristics. To investigate predictors of WIC take-up, we regressed self-reported WIC receipt on a range of individual-level predictors (e.g., age, nativity, income) and state- level predictors (e.g., unemployment rate, governor's political affiliation) using multivariable logistic regression. In secondary analyses, results were additionally stratified by race/ethnicity, time period, and age (for children). RESULTS For both women and children, older maternal age and higher educational attainment were associated with decreased take-up of WIC. Associations differed by race/ethnicity, time period, and state characteristics including caseload of other social programs (e.g., Medicaid). DISCUSSION Our study identifies groups that are less likely to take up WIC benefits for which they are eligible, thereby contributing important evidence to inform programs and policies to increase WIC participation among groups with lower take-up. As WIC evolves past the COVID-19 pandemic, special attention will be needed to ensure that resources to encourage and support the participation of racially and economically marginalized individuals are equitably distributed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Households including someone with disabilities experience disproportionately high food insecurity rates and likely face disproportionate barriers accessing Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. OBJECTIVE This article aims to examine the role of SNAP with regard to food insecurity disparities based on disability status. METHODS Modified Poisson regression models examined food insecurity risk based on disability status (household includes no one with disabilities vs. those with work-limiting disabilities or non-work-limiting disabilities) among 2018 Survey of Income and Program Participation households eligible for SNAP (income ≤130% of the poverty threshold). Weighted estimates were used to account for the study design and non-response. RESULTS Households including someone with work-limiting disabilities were more than twice as likely to be food insecure than households including no one with disabilities (PR = 2.16, 95% CI: 1.90, 2.45); households including someone with non-work-limiting disabilities were 65% more likely (PR = 1.65, 95% CI: 1.39, 1.95). However, disparities were more pronounced among households not participating in SNAP (PR = 2.67, 95% CI: 2.22, 3.23 for work-limiting disabilities and PR = 1.86, 95% CI: 1.44, 2.40 for non-work-limiting disabilities) than SNAP-participating households (PR = 1.71, 95% CI: 1.45, 2.03 and PR = 1.46, 95% CI: 1.17, 1.82, respectively). Approximately 4.2 million low-income U.S. households including someone with disabilities are food insecure. Of these, 1.4 million were not participating in SNAP and another 2.8 million households were food insecure despite participating in SNAP. CONCLUSIONS Access to SNAP benefits is not proportionate to the scale of food insecurity among households that include people with disabilities. Action is needed to strengthen food assistance for those with disabilities.

Abstract
Safety-net programs do not reach all eligible Americans, partly because of administrative burden, or experiencing bureaucratic obstacles in obtaining and maintaining program benefits. This burden often disproportionately affects historically marginalized groups, adding concerns about equity. We used a national survey to examine public thinking about the acceptability of administrative burdens imposed by states when implementing Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and the role of race in these considerations. We found that support for state actions associated with six types of burden was unchanged when respondents were informed about disparate effects by race. Neither racial identity nor prejudice toward other racial groups was associated with support for policies imposing higher burdens. However, non-Hispanic White respondents with higher levels of racial resentment were more supportive of policies that would create burden, whereas respondents who believed that burdens had disparate effects on historically disadvantaged groups favored less burdensome alternatives. Also associated with lower support for more burdensome policies were responses indicative of respondents' empathy, concerns about ability to manage burdens, Democratic party identification, and program experience.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In Los Angeles County (LAC), California, the demand for Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) services increased during the COVID-19 pandemic, concurrent with the shift to fully remote WIC service delivery in March 2020. Technologies for facilitating remote services were critical for accommodating increases in participation during the COVID-19 pandemic. OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to quantify patterns of remote-service utilization and to determine whether use of remote services (phone, interactive texting, e-mail, online education, video appointments) was associated with higher rates of recertification among WIC participants early in the COVID-19 pandemic. DESIGN Cross-sectional survey with administrative data for follow-up PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: This study used data from the 2020 LAC WIC Survey and WIC administrative data to evaluate remote service utilization across LAC WIC agencies (unweighted n = 3,510; weighted n = 3,540). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Recertification on WIC, determined by the issuance of a food package in the first 2 months after the end-date of the prior certification period. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS Survey data were merged to WIC administrative data to determine whether participants completed a recertification; the association of utilization of each remote service with the odds of recertification among WIC-participating children 0 to 3 years of age was assessed with multivariable logistic regression. RESULTS Most survey respondents reported using phone appointments (95.5%), interactive texting (77.3%), e-mail (60.1%), and online education (71.2%) to access WIC services during 2020, and over 82% of children successfully recertified. Interactive texting utilization was associated with 27% higher recertification odds (95% confidence interval, 1%-59%); associations between all other remote services and odds of recertification were not statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that WIC investment in interactive texting technological infrastructure, and appropriate staff training, can help local WIC agencies successfully reach and provide high-quality services to WIC participants.

Abstract
Little is known about food insecurity and the extent of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) participation in the heterogeneous Asian American population. Using California Health Interview Survey data from the period 2011-20, we examined both issues among low-income Asian American adults from six origin groups: Chinese, Filipino, Japanese, Korean, South Asian, and Vietnamese. We found high and varied levels of overall food insecurity, with the highest burden among Filipino adults (40 percent). Food insecurity by severity was also heterogenous; very low food security affected 2 percent of Chinese adults but 9 percent and 10 percent of Filipino and Japanese adults, respectively. Participation in CalFresh (California-implemented SNAP) ranged from 11 percent and 12 percent among Korean and Chinese adults, respectively, to 20 percent among Vietnamese adults. Compared with English-proficient low-income Asian American adults, those with limited English proficiency were no less likely to participate in CalFresh, possibly reflecting language assistance required by California law and provided by community-based organizations. These results underscore the importance of collecting and reporting disaggregated data by Asian origin group that could inform targeted outreach and interventions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) is a critical source of nutrition support for young children in low-income families, providing access to healthy foods and a cash value benefit (CVB) for the purchase of fruits and vegetables (FV). In 2021, the WIC CVB increased substantially for women and children aged 1 to 5 years. OBJECTIVE To investigate whether or not the increased WIC CVB for purchasing FV was associated with greater redemption of the FV benefit, satisfaction, household food security, and child FV intake. DESIGN Longitudinal study of WIC participants receiving WIC benefits from May 2021 through May 2022. Through May 2021, the WIC CVB for children aged 1 to 4 years was $9/month. The value increased to $35/month from June through September 2021, and changed to $24/month starting October 2021. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING WIC participants from seven WIC sites in California with one or more child aged 1 to 4 years during May 2021 and one or more follow-up surveys during September 2021 or May 2022 (N = 1,770). MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES CVB redemption (in US dollars), satisfaction with the amount (prevalence), household food security (prevalence), and child FV intake (cups per day). STATISTICAL ANALYSES Associations of increased CVB issuance following the June 2021 CVB augmentation with child FV intake and CVB redemption were assessed using mixed effects regression, and associations with satisfaction and household food security were assessed using modified Poisson regression. RESULTS The increased CVB was associated with significantly greater redemption and satisfaction. At the second follow-up (May 2022), household food security increased by 10% (95% CI 7% to 12%); total FV intake decreased by 0.03 c/day (95% CI -0.06 to -0.01) in the overall sample, but increased by 0.23 c/day (95% CI 0.17 to 0.29) among children with the lowest baseline FV intake. CONCLUSIONS This study documented benefits of augmentation to the CVB for children. WIC policy augmenting the value of WIC food packages to increase access to FV had the intended effects, lending support to making the increased FV benefit permanent.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Food insecurity is associated with an increased likelihood of interpersonal violence. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is the largest program addressing food insecurity in the U.S. States can eliminate the asset test and/or increase the income limit for SNAP eligibility, expanding the number of households receiving assistance. We examined the association of state elimination of the asset test and increases in the income limit with rates of interpersonal violence, including intimate partner violence (IPV), other relationship violence (violence by a parent, friend, etc.), and stranger violence. METHODS We used data from the SNAP Policy Database and state-level estimates of rates of interpersonal violence per 1000 population ages ≥12 years from the 2012-2014 to 2016-2018 National Crime Victimization Survey. RESULTS States that adopted both SNAP eligibility policies (eliminated the asset test and increased the income limit) had a lower rate of IPV (β = -0.4, 95% CI -0.9, 0.0) and other relationship violence (β = -2.4, 95% CI -3.8, -1.1) compared to states that did not adopt either policy. The rate of stranger violence (β = -0.5, 95% CI -2.3, 1.4) did not differ for states that adopted both policies compared to states that did not adopt either policy. Rates of IPV (β = -0.4, 95% CI -0.9, 0.2), other relationship violence (β = -1.2, 95% CI -3.2, 0.7), and stranger violence (β = -0.2, 95% CI -2.0, 1.6) did not differ for states that eliminated the asset test only compared to states that did not adopt either policy. CONCLUSION Expanding SNAP eligibility may help prevent interpersonal violence at the population-level.
