Abstract
The anaesthetic effect of carbon dioxide (CO2) was investigated under predetermined exposure times in rats, mice and guinea pigs with admixture of 20% of oxygen (O2), and with 20% of ambient air in rats. In rats first symptoms (median) were detectable between 7 and 9.5 s, the induction time (median) varied between 16 and 20.5 s and the surgical tolerance (median) was 40 s (after 60 s of exposure) and 53.5 s (after 120 s of exposure) to 80% CO2/20% O2. When O2 was replaced by ambient air, a surgical tolerance of 53.5 s (after 60 s of exposure) and 77 s (after 120 s of exposure) was measured. In mice the induction time to 80% CO2/20% O2 was 10 s and the surgical tolerance 19.5 s (after 120 s of exposure). Guinea pigs showed an induction period of 20 s and a surgical tolerance of 50 s (after 30 s of exposure) to 80% CO2/O2. Recovery was short and smooth in all species. This method of general anaesthesia seems to be suitable for short and painful interventions, mainly in rats, but also in guinea pigs.

Abstract
In general, pain has been defined as "an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage, or described in terms of such damage", and hence pain is a subjective and emotional experience for each individual. For this reason, it is difficult to study pain in nonverbal animals. However, painful stimuli (noxious stimuli) can cause both a simple and an overt emotional behavior such as self-defense reaction and vocalization in animals. Therefore, we are able to measure these behaviors as nonverbal communication of pain. The vocalization responses is the natural nociceptive reaction of conscious animals and prelingual children. In the present overview, we described the methodology for objective assessment of guinea pig's vocalization response to arterial algogenics and its characteristics.

Abstract
Among mammals a majority of each individual's daily expectations, motivations, and behaviors are directed to encounters with conspecifics. Therefore the knowledge of the genesis, control, and consequences of social interactions is crucial for understanding their social life. We present here our research on the sociophysiology, domestication, and social evolution of wild (Cavia aperea and Galea musteloides) and domestic (Cavia aperea f. porcellus) guinea pigs, which summarizes general rules for many group-living mammals. It is shown that social interactions have consequences not only for the individuals' reproductive success but also for their degrees of stress and welfare. The way in which individuals interact is controlled not only by the present environment but also by the previous social experiences which they have gathered during their behavioral development. Furthermore, the study of ontogeny does not begin at birth, because prenatal social factors acting on pregnant females can also affect the way in which the offspring will interact when adult. In addition, to understand the genesis of interactions between domesticated animals implies knowledge of the behavioral and physiological changes which occurred during the process of domestication. Finally, understanding the social interactions among individuals of the wild ancestor of the domesticated form requires knowledge of how their behavior patterns were brought about by natural selection during the process of social evolution.

Abstract
This study sets out to compare the combinations of potential vasodilator transmitters expressed by sympathetic and pelvic vasodilator neurons of guinea-pigs. Triple-labelling fluorescence immunohistochemistry was used to examine immunoreactivity (IR) to vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP), nitric oxide synthase (NOS) and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) in lumbar sympathetic ganglia, and in perivascular axons supplying hindlimb skeletal muscles or pelvic viscera. Only 0.2% of VIP-IR nerve cell bodies in lumbar sympathetic ganglia (n = 4632 VIP-IR nerve cell profiles) contained NOS-IR, and one VIP-IR neuron contained CGRP-IR. The VIP-IR perivascular axons along the common and external iliac arteries, femoral artery and arteries to hindlimb muscles lacked NOS-IR and CGRP-IR. In contrast, all VIP-IR perivascular axons projecting from pelvic ganglia to the main uterine artery, and half of the VIP-IR axons along the internal iliac artery, contained NOS-IR and CGRP-IR. Thus, the neurochemical content of sympathetic vasodilator neurons to skeletal muscle arteries was clearly distinguishable from that of pelvic vasodilator neurons to the uterine vasculature. Furthermore, the autonomic dilation in each vascular bed is likely to be qualitatively different, and matched to the functional requirements of each target organ.

Abstract
Results of a 12 month study of traditional guinea-pig production in the western highlands of Cameroon are reported. The mean age of guinea-pigs (Cavia porcellus L.) at first parturition, kidding interval and litter size at birth were 126.30 +/- 10.40 d, 64.8 +/- 1.70 d and 1.63 +/- 0.26 kids respectively. The annual reproductive rate was 9.18 kids/breeding doe while the doe post-partum weight was 530 g. Mean body weights at birth, presumed weaning (21 d) and 15 weeks of age were 78.36 +/- 3.20, 147.51 +/- 8.10 and 418.88 +/- 32 g respectively. Type of birth and sex had a significant effect on body weight at all ages. Birth weight dropped significantly from 83.88 +/- 2.87 g for singles to 81.57 +/- 3.40 g for twins, 74.25 +/- 2.39 g for triplets and 73.75 +/- 4.12 g for quadruplets. These differences were maintained to maturity (15 weeks). Males were generally heavier than females. Mortality rates were relatively high among kids: 24% at birth, 39% at 3 weeks and 40% at 15 weeks. Productivity indices were 0.827 kg of young weaned per doe per year, 1560 g of young weaned per kg of doe per year and 2.52 kg of young weaned per kg metabolic weight (kg 0.75) of female per year.

Abstract
Immunologic responses elicited after vaginal immunization of laboratory mammals are affected by the stage of the animal's estrous cycle at which antigen is delivered. The study reported here documents vaginal impedance as an improved means of determining accurately precise stages of the estrous cycle of guinea pigs. Impedance changes were correlated with cytologic changes observed in vaginal smears taken from the animals. The start of the impedance peak corresponded with proestrus, the rising side of the peak with estrus, and the apex of the peak with metestrus; diestrus was seen approximately 3 days after the peak apex. These results contrast with those of previous studies. Various dosage regimens of estradiol (1 to 1,000 micrograms/animal over 1 to 6 days) were used in guinea pigs in an attempt to invoke an extended (> 6 h) estrogen-induced mucosa. Parenteral administration of 1,000 micrograms of estradiol to guinea pigs daily for 6 days induced a 2- to 3-day estrus stage in these animals.

Abstract
An in vitro autoradiographic technique has recently been developed to visualize receptor-activated G-proteins by using agonist-stimulated [35S]guanylyl-5'-O-(gamma-thio)-triphosphate ([35S]GTPgammaS) binding in the presence of excess guanosine 5'-diphosphate. This technique was used to localize opioid-activated G-proteins in guinea pig brain, a species that contains the three major types of opioid receptors. This study used selective mu, delta, and kappa opioid agonists as well as nociceptin or orphanin FQ (N/OFQ) peptide, an endogenous ligand for an orphan opioid receptor-like (ORL1) receptor, to stimulate [35S]GTPgammaS binding in guinea pig brain sections. Opioid receptor specificity was confirmed by blocking agonist-stimulated [35S] GTPgammaS binding with the appropriate antagonists. In general, the distribution of agonist-stimulated [35S]GTPgammaS binding correlated with previous reports of receptor binding autoradiography, although quantitative differences suggest regional variations in receptor coupling efficiency. Mu, delta, and kappa opioid-stimulated [35S]GTPgammaS binding was found in the caudate-putamen, nucleus accumbens, amygdala, and hypothalamus. Mu-stimulated [35S]GTPgammaS binding predominated in the hypothalamus, amygdala, and brainstem, whereas kappa-stimulated [35S]GTPgammaS binding was particularly high in the substantia nigra and cortex and was moderate in the cerebellum. N/OFQ-stimulated [35S] GTPgammaS binding was highest in the cortex, hippocampus, and hypothalamus and exhibited a unique anatomical distribution compared with opioid-stimulated [35S]GTPgammaS binding. The present study extends previous reports on opioid and ORL1 receptor localization by anatomically demonstrating functional activity produced by mu, delta, and kappa opioid and ORL1 receptor activation of G-proteins.

Abstract
Vestibular and optokinetic function was quantitatively studied in the normal guinea pig through investigation of the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR), optokinetic nystagmus (OKN), and the visual vestibulo-ocular reflex (VVOR) by means of sinusoidal stimulation with a computer-controlled rate table (VOR and VVOR) or an optokinetic drum. The VOR exhibited high-pass filter characteristics with steady state gain achieved at 0.125 Hz. The maximum gain was 0.55 at a velocity of 60 degrees/s. The VOR was modeled by a transfer function with best fits obtained with an adaptation time constant of 12.5 seconds. The OKN showed low-pass filter characteristics with a decrease in gain for increase in stimulus amplitude. The maximum gain measured was 0.64. A fractional pole model provided a fit of these data. The VVOR exhibited a mean gain of between 0.6 and 0.7 across the stimulus bandwidth and peak velocities. A model based on a linear combination of the actual OKN and VOR gains provided an estimate of the VVOR gain.

Abstract
A method for the continuous measurement of proton activity at the luminal surface of the gastro intestinal mucosa was developed. The pH-sensitive fluorescent dye 5-N-hexadecanoyl-amino fluorescein (HAF) was used to monitor the surface pH (pHs). HAF integrates in the apical membrane of the colonic cells because of its amphophilic character. By excitation at two different wavelengths, the ratio of the two fluorescence intensities corresponds to the pHs. pHs in the presence of bicarbonate is relatively independent of the luminal pH. In bicarbonate-free, HEPES-buffered solutions, such a constant "microclimate" was not present. Addition of 113 mmol.l-1 butyrate to the luminal solution caused an increase of the surface pH by 0.14 +/- 0.07 (n = 18) pH units in bicarbonate-containing medium. This increase was not observed in bicarbonate-free medium, indicating that the increase in pHs is due to a gain of bicarbonate during butyrate absorption.

Abstract
The effects of different fiber sources on feed intake, weight gain and digestibility of fiber were examined in guinea-pigs fed pelleted diets containing alfalfa meal, oaten hay, beet pulp and commercial hay cubes mixed with a basal diet at ratios of 3:1 (75% in the diet), 1:1 (50%) and 1:3 (25%). The basal diet contained 50.0% corn, 4.1% wheat, 22.1% wheat flour and 17.7% corn gluten meal. Food intake increased as the amount of fiber source was increased, but not in the case of beet pulp. The most digestible fiber (ADF and NDF) was that of beet pulp. Apparent digestibility of dry matter decreased with increasing ratios of fiber source to the basal diet for all fiber sources, but fiber and crude protein digestibilities varied and depended not only on the ratio of fiber to the basal diet but also on the source of the fiber.

Abstract
A number of electrophysiological studies have shown that neurones in the submucous plexus are endowed with three major types of synaptic potentials in response to nerve stimulation: a fast EPSP, a slow IPSP, and a slow EPSP. Combined electrophysiological and immunohistochemical studies enabled analysis of the types of neurochemically identified neurones which receive each type of synaptic input. This short review briefly summarizes the results obtained from these studies.

Abstract
Bi-directional interactions between the enteric nervous system and the immune system play an important role in gut inflammation. We therefore investigated the effects of the inflammatory mediators, prostaglandin (PGD2, PGE2, PGI2, and PGF2 alpha) and leukotriene (LTC4), on guinea-pig colonic secretion and on electrophysiological behaviour of submucosal neurones. In Ussing chambers, all inflammatory mediators evoked a dose-dependent increase in short circuit current (Isc) that represented electrogenic chloride secretion. The secretory response was significantly reduced by tetrodotoxin (TTX) and atropine suggesting involvement of cholinergic submucosal neurones. Long-term application of prostaglandins and LTC4 induced TTX- and atropine-sensitive cyclical chloride secretions. Intracellular recordings revealed activation of submucosal neurones by all inflammatory mediators. This activation consisted of depolarisation of the membrane associated with increased spike discharge. Frequently, prostaglandins and LTC4 induced spontaneous occurrence of cholinergic fast excitatory postsynaptic potentials. Results suggest that the role of the enteric nervous system in neuroimmune interactions consists of a potentiation of the direct epithelial effect of inflammatory mediators by the activation of submucosal neurones. Ongoing nerve-mediated cyclical changes in chloride secretion may be interpreted as the induction of intrinsic alarm programs. The effects of inflammatory mediators may serve as a defense mechanism to dilute noxious substances in the lumen.

Abstract
The arrangements of vibrissae in guinea pigs and golden hamsters were previously reported to be different from those in mice and rats. Whereas the mystacial pads in mice and rats include four straddlers and five rows of vibrissae, guinea pigs were described to possess six rows of irregularly aligned mystacial vibrissae and no straddlers, and golden hamsters to include seven vibrissal rows and also no straddlers. We found that all of these four species possess similar vibrissal arrangements within the mystacial pad. To demonstrate this similarity, we developed a new method of sinus hair visualization in flattened and cleared preparations of the mystacial pad. Intrinsic muscles of the mystacial pad that were revealed in thick histological preparations showed clearly the structural and functional relationships between straddlers and vibrissal rows. To verify this finding, and to extend the knowledge of vibrissal cortical representations in guinea pigs and golden hamsters, we have investigated the spatial organization and the functional vibrissal representations of barrels in the posteromedial barrel subfield (PMBSF) of these rodents. The barrel morphology was clearly preserved in Nissl-stained sections and sections processed for cytochrome oxidase of flattened cerebral cortices. We demonstrate that the vibrissal arrangement in the mystacial pad is replicated in the PMBSF of guinea pigs and golden hamsters and that this arrangement is similar to that found in mice and rats. To facilitate comparative studies, these findings strongly recommend the use, in guinea pigs and golden hamsters, of the same classifications and nomenclatures that are used in mice and rats to describe mystacial vibrissae and cortical barrels.

Abstract
Caviomorphs stand out from other small rodents by producing extremely precocial young. Pups begin to nibble solid food right after birth and can survive weaning when 5 d old. We tested whether these properties of young lead to a low cost of lactation in guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus). In contrast to altricial rodents, energy acquisition and expenditure of guinea pig mothers (litter size, three) was highest during the first half of the 23-d lactation period. Daily metabolizable energy intake at peak lactation was increased by 126% above nonreproducing level and was 65% of the predicted maximal intake. Peak daily energy expenditure was 1.9 times basal metabolic rate, and resting energy expenditure was elevated 26% above nonreproductive level. From the third day, young consumed solid food and intake increased linearly over the course of lactation. During lactation, total intake of litters through solid food consumption (assuming efficient digestion) amounted to 86% of the energy intake that mothers allocated to reproduction during that period. The pattern of energy expenditure during lactation in guinea pigs differs substantially from that of altricial rodents and is made possible because pups contribute through solid food intake. Overall energy demand on the mothers is not much lower than in altricial rodents, but lower peak energy demand during lactation in guinea pigs may reduce the coupling of reproduction to periods of high food abundance.

Abstract
Animals with partial alopecia were seen frequently in a breeding colony of guinea pigs. No pathologic aetiology could be determined. An influence of nutrition on the density of the hair coat was considered. Breeding groups were fed one of the commercial guinea pig diets of differing composition, with or without the addition of hay. Observation occurred over a period of months and the quality of the hair coat was evaluated periodically using a semi-quantitative scoring system. More extensive and more frequent fur defects were found is guinea pigs receiving a breeding diet with a high content of crude protein (23%) and a low level of crude fibre (12%), offered hay only restrictively compared with animals receiving a diet with a lower content of crude protein (15.5%) and a higher level of crude fibre (19.5%), offered the same amount of hay. The amount of hay offered is of paramount importance. Animals fed only the diet with the higher level of crude fibre (19.5%), according to the manufacturer's instructions as a complete food, without the addition of hay, showed a less dense hair coat within 4 weeks. In our colony a group of five breeding animals and their young required 200 g of hay daily in order to improve their hair coat quality to normal. Conversely, animals receiving less hay had progressively deteriorating hair coat density. Not only the amount of hay offered, but also the accessibility for all animals plays a role in preventing alopecia in guinea pigs. In larger cages (twice the usual ground surface area) fur defects were seen when the same amount of hay (200 g) was offered in only one central area, rather than spread out evenly throughout the cage. Hair loss was observed to be the result of trichophagia between adult animals kept in the same cage. The need for crude fibre of breeding animals does not appear to be completely met by pellets rich in fibre segments.

Abstract
The sensory apparatus of the extraocular muscles attains special interest because of the great variation among different species with respect to the proprioceptors. The sensory innervation of the guinea pig extraocular muscles, lacking both muscle spindles and tendon organs, was investigated with a fluorescence double-labelling method. Primary sensory perikarya were assessed by postmortem application of 1,1'-dioctadecyl-3,3,3'3'-tetramethylindocarbocyanine perchlorate (Di-I) to the extraocular muscle nerves. Traced neurons were found in the ipsilateral ophthalmic part of the trigeminal ganglion. This is in line with findings in other species. Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) was detected immunohistochemically within the trigeminal ganglion. No somatotopic organization was observed for CGRP-like immunoreactive perikarya. Small (maximal diameter below 30 microm), medium (maximal diameter between 30 and 50 microm), and large (maximal diameter larger than 50 microm) trigeminal ganglion cells were found among the primary afferent perikarya from extraocular muscles. Among CGRP-like immunoreactive cells, only small and medium cells were observed. Double-labelling experiments indicated the CGRP content of primary afferents of the guinea pig extraocular muscles. The relationship to former morphological categories of ganglion cells is discussed. Primary afferent neurons with CGRP-like immunoreactivity might have efferent functions and might also be involved in inflammatory processes of extraocular muscles.

Abstract
Electrically evoked otoacoustic emissions (EEOAEs) were generated by ac stimulation in scala media of turns 1, 2, and 3 in the guinea pig cochlea. In each turn EEOAEs were recorded at frequencies up to and slightly above the estimated characteristic frequency (CF) of the stimulation site. Acoustic enhancement of EEOAEs was present at all emission frequencies in turns 2 and 3 but could be demonstrated in turn 1 only at emission frequencies that fell within a notch in the EEOAE tuning function. There was no evidence, in any turn, of a transition from enhancement to suppression as the emission frequency approached the CF of the stimulation site. The results were not consistent with the hypothesis [D. C. Mountain and A. E. Hubbard, Hear, Res. 42, 195-202 (1989)] that acoustic enhancement results from a reduction in the effectiveness of forward transduction in a negative feedback loop.

Abstract
Long-term potentiation (LTP) was studied in the lateral vestibular nucleus (LVN-Deiters' nucleus) in guinea-pigs in vivo. Field potentials and extracellular single unit discharges were recorded in the LVN following electrical stimulation of the ipsilateral VIIIth nerve. High-frequency stimulation (HFS) of the VIIIth nerve fibres produced LTP of the monosynaptic component of the vestibular field potential. The LTP of the field potentials was paralleled by an increase of the evoked spike activity. Intranuclear administration of the NMDA antagonist MK-801 prevented LTP of the monosynaptic component of the vestibular field potentials and significantly suppressed the spontaneous firing of lateral vestibular neurones in a dose-dependent fashion. These results demonstrate that synapses between primary afferent fibres and second order LVN neurones undergo long lasting changes following HFS of the ipsilateral vestibular nerve.

Abstract
A significant relationship between sex ratio and litter size at birth was observed in the young of guinea-pigs caged singly from 8 weeks of age and during their first pregnancy; a male was present only at or around oestrus. Small litters (1-2 young) had significantly more males than did large litters (4-5 young). Such a relationship was not apparent in animals housed communally, whether young or older or in their second pregnancy. Litters in late pregnancy (day 63) or at delivery were significantly smaller than at mid-pregnancy (day 35). A significant negative relationship was found between litter size and bodymass at birth and to at least 63 days of age. Growth rates during the period of lactation were lower in animals born in large litters. The possible adaptive significance of a plastic relationship between litter size and sex ratio is considered together with the physiological mechanism that might be involved.

Abstract
The binaural masking level difference (BMLD) is a striking and well-documented psychophysical effect which relates to the ability to use the phase of low-frequency sounds to dissociate them from masking noise. When identical tones and noise are presented to both ears, detectability is improved by up to 15 dB simply by inverting the phase of either the tone or noise in one ear. Measurements of BMLDs were made in single delay-sensitive neurones in the inferior colliculus of the guinea pig. These have confirmed and extended an earlier report [D. M. Caird, A. R. Palmer, and A. Rees, Hear. Res. 57, 91-106 (1991)] by demonstrating that when signals are optimized for the frequency, level, and interaural delay sensitivities of each neurone, BMLDs can be measured which are in a direction, and of a magnitude, consistent with appropriate psychophysical observations in human subjects. In addition, BMLDs were found to be consistent with the delay sensitivities of the neurones to the signal and masker, the major determinant of the masked threshold for optimized signals being the activity evoked in the neurone by the masking noise. Within-channel signal-to-noise (S/N) ratios at masked threshold for single neurones varied from +20 to -7 dB, depending on the binaural configuration and the units' delay sensitivities. In single neurones, the size of the BMLD for optimized signals increased with the level of the noise. The BMLD increased by 5 dB over a 40-dB range of noise, consistent with psychophysical observations. This came about because as noise level increased, masked threshold for optimized tones increased more slowly in Npi noise than in N0 noise. For all binaural comparisons, both positive (pi signals more detectable, as in the psychophysics) and negative BMLDs were observed, often in the same neurone, a result entirely consistent with the sensitivity to the interaural delay of the noise and tone signals. For 500-Hz signals in zero and pi phase masked by identical noise the majority of BMLDs determined with the PEST procedure was negative, a result which is taken to indicate that increases in spike rate may not be an appropriate cue for masked threshold under these conditions.

Abstract
An improved guinea pig headholder, designed to provide long-term and reliable head fixation, was developed. It consists of a mouthpiece, nose clamp, and pivoting backing block. The advantages of this headholder are i) the correspondence of the mouthpiece to the anatomical peculiarities of the guinea pig skull, ii) automatic positioning for snout fixation, and iii) application of the load to sites of the skull that are strong, the latter of which prevents tissue damage. The headholder fits guinea pigs weighing 400-750 g and permits free access to all brain regions.

Abstract
To establish reliable methods of chemical restraint and anaesthesia for mildly painful procedures in guineapigs, we compared the effects of the following anaesthetics and combinations of anaesthetics: tiletamine-zolazepam (two dosages), pentobarbital, methoxyflurane, ketamine-xylazine (three dosages), and ketamine-xylazine with methoxyflurane. Tiletamine-zolazepam induced a short period of chemical restraint but lacked analgesic effects at the doses tested. Although pentobarbital induced prolonged chemical restraint, the loss of responsiveness to painful stimuli was brief. Methoxyflurane alone induced transient anaesthesia and analgesia. Ketamine-xylazine combinations induced analgesia and chemical restraint of comparable durations, and some dosages were suitable for mildly painful procedures. The addition of methoxyflurane significantly potentiated the anaesthetic and analgesic properties of the high dosage ketamine-xylazine combination.

Abstract
In the guinea-pig two subcortical structures have been shown to contain representations of auditory space, the deep layers of the superior colliculus (SC) and the external nucleus of the inferior colliculus (ICX). The following investigation was undertaken to determine if the ICX influences the development of the SC auditory space map. A portion of the ICX was lesioned unilaterally when guinea-pigs were between 8 and 13 days old. Following a period of recovery, the SC mapping experiments commenced in the adult guinea-pig. Electrophysiological auditory responses were recorded from the deep layers of the SC to free-field azimuthal auditory stimulation. The data from the ICX lesioned animals revealed that the spatial tuning parameter values of the auditory receptive fields from the SC were significantly greater than those recorded in the normal control group of animals. The pooled data from the ICX lesioned group indicated that the peak angle of the response of the auditory receptive fields did not display normal topographic order. Furthermore, in several cases where the ICX lesion site was small, the position of the lesion could be correlated with the site of SC auditory space map disruption. These data indicate that, during early development, the presence of the ICX is essential for the normal emergence of an azimuthal map of auditory space in the deep layers of the guinea-pig SC.
