Abstract
BACKGROUND The Brandt tracheal tube keeps cuff pressure constant during anaesthesia, but the mechanisms have not been examined. We assessed volume, pressure and gas concentration in the cuff and pilot balloon using the Brandt system. METHODS The pressure in an air-filled cuff of the Brandt system (Mallinckrodt Brandt tracheal tube, n = 60) was recorded during anaesthesia with 67% nitrous oxide; gas volume and concentration in cuffs and balloons were measured for up to 12 h from the start of anaesthesia. The volume change of each gas was calculated to assess its contribution to the cuff pressure. We also measured cuff compliance in vitro. RESULTS Cuff pressure increased slightly during anaesthesia (P < 0.05). The nitrous oxide concentration increased to 47.7 (8.2)% (mean (SD)) in the cuff and to 2.2 (0.9)% in the pilot balloon. The nitrous oxide volume in the cuff and pilot balloon increased by approximately 2 ml during the first 4 h of anaesthesia. The carbon dioxide volume increased slightly, and nitrogen and oxygen did not change significantly. The compliance of the Brandt tube cuff was six times greater than that of a standard tube cuff (Mallinckrodt Hi-Contour tracheal tube). CONCLUSIONS The Brandt tracheal tube maintains stable cuff pressure during nitrous oxide anaesthesia because of a highly compliant balloon. The concentration gradient of nitrous oxide between the cuff and pilot balloon also contributes to the stable-cuff pressure because the high nitrous oxide concentration in the cuff reduces nitrous oxide influx.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Effects of propofol on human cerebral blood flow (CBF), cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen (CMRO2), and blood flow-metabolism coupling have not been fully evaluated. We therefore assessed the effects of propofol on total-CBF and CMRO2 in patients without noxious stimuli and neurologic disorders. METHODS General anesthesia was induced with midazolam (0.2 mg/kg) and fentanyl (5 microg/kg) in 10 patients (ASA physical status I) undergoing knee joint endoscopic surgery. Epidural anesthesia was also performed to avoid noxious stimuli during surgery. Cerebral blood flow (CBF) and cerebral arteriovenous oxygen content difference (a-vDO2) was measured using the Kety-Schmidt method with 15% N2O as a tracer before and after propofol infusion (6 mg/kg/h for 40 min), and the CMRO2 was also calculated. RESULTS CBF decreased following propofol infusion from 34.4 ml/100 g/min (range 28.4-52.0) to 30.0 ml/100 g/min (range 20.2-42.4) (P=0.04). Although there was no significant change in a-vDO2, CMRO2 decreased following propofol infusion from 2.7 ml/100 g/min (range 2.2-4.3) to 2.2 ml/100 g/min (range 1.4-3.0) (P=0.04). There was a strong linear correlation between CBF and CMRO2 (r=0.90). CONCLUSION Propofol proportionally decreased CBF and CMRO2 without affecting a-vDO2 in humans, suggesting that normal cerebral circulation and metabolism are maintained.

Abstract
Electron beams with the lowest, normalized transverse emittance recorded so far were produced and confirmed in single-bunch-mode operation of the Accelerator Test Facility at KEK. We established a tuning method of the damping ring which achieves a small vertical dispersion and small x-y orbit coupling. The vertical emittance was less than 1% of the horizontal emittance. At the zero-intensity limit, the vertical normalized emittance was less than 2.8 x 10(-8) rad m at beam energy 1.3 GeV. At high intensity, strong effects of intrabeam scattering were observed, which had been expected in view of the extremely high particle density due to the small transverse emittance.

Abstract
A 46-yr-old Japanese male who underwent a second cadaveric kidney transplantation on 31 October 1996 after suffering Type II diabetic mellitus for 25 yr was admitted to our institute on 23 January 1999, because of colicky abdominal pain and abdominal discomfort. Elevated levels of serum creatinine, severe proteinuria and microscopic haematuria were observed. The allograft biopsy specimen disclosed crescentic glomerulonephritis. Immunofluorescence showed granular deposits of mainly IgA and C3 along glomerular capillary walls and mesangial areas. Electron microscopy showed extensive subepithelial and mesangial electron dense deposits. Rapid and irreversible worsening of graft function led to resumption of haemodialysis on 31 May 1999. We speculated that this case was an atypical form of de novo Henoch-Schönlein purpura nephritis (HSPN) in transplanted kidney because of the histopathological findings of the allograft biopsy and clinical symptoms.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to determine the contribution of p38 MAP kinase activity during hydrogen peroxide mediated increased endothelial solute permeability. We also sought to identify the role of p38 MAP kinase-mediated changes in endothelial cell architecture due to hydrogen peroxide challenge. METHODS Hydrogen peroxide mediated permeability of HUVEC was determined with and without inhibition of p38 MAP kinase by SB202190. Hydrogen peroxide mediated rearrangement of the endothelial actin cytoskeleton and junctional proteins occludin and ZO-1 were observed by immunofluorescence microscopy. RESULTS Hydrogen peroxide treatment of endothelial monolayers caused a significant increase in solute permeability over a ninety-minute time period. Oxidant-mediated permeability and phosphorylation of p38 MAP kinase was significantly attenuated by SB 202190. Immunofluorescent staining for the tight junctional proteins occludin and ZO-1 demonstrated that oxidant challenge caused a loss of endothelial tight junction organization. Rhodamine phalloidin staining of the actin cytoskeleton showed that hydrogen peroxide stimulated increased stress fiber formation with concomitant gap formation between adjacent endothelial cells. Inhibition of p38 MAP kinase during oxidant challenge significantly attenuated actin stress fiber formation and prevented gap formation. CONCLUSIONS These data demonstrate that p38 MAP kinase activity is involved in hydrogen peroxide mediated permeability, stress fiber formation, and intracellular gap formation.

Abstract
Free radicals play an important role in the initiation and progression of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Therefore, the reduction or elimination of adverse oxidant effects can provide novel therapy for IBD. Here, the antioxidant capacity and protective effects of a new class of chemically modified hetastarch (polynitroxyl starch, or PNS) plus 4-hydroxyl-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-N-oxyl (Tempol or TPL) (PNS/TPL) were assessed in a model of colitis. The superoxide scavenging capacity of PNS/TPL-that is, the inhibition of the reduction of cytochrome c in the presence of xanthine/xanthine oxidase (X/XO)-was evaluated in vitro. The effects of PNS/TPL on X/XO-induced neutrophil endothelial adhesion in vitro were investigated. Also, this study tested the protection produced by PNS/TPL in a mouse model of trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS)-induced colitis. PNS/TPL was given intravenously immediately before (< 30 min) and intraperitoneally at 24 and 72 hr after TNBS induction. The body weight and survival rate of the mice were checked daily. Colonic mucosal damage was assessed on the 7th day by measuring intestinal permeability to Evans blue (EB) in vivo. The ability of PNS to reoxidize bioreduced TPL was documented by whole-body electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) detection. We found that PNS or TPL exhibits superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity, with approximately 2% of SOD activity occurring on a molar basis. The endothelial-neutrophil adherence induced by X/XO was significantly inhibited by PNS/TPL but not by TPL alone. PNS/TPL protected against cachexia and mortality, both usually induced by TNBS. Epithelial permeability was increased significantly in TNBS mice but was ameliorated by the administration of PNS/TPL. In conclusion, PNS/TPL may be beneficial in the treatment or prevention of IBD through its antioxidant effects, which inhibit oxidant-mediated leukocyte adhesion and injury to endothelial cells.

Abstract
In the search for agents effective against immune-mediated disorders and inflammation, we have screened Malaysian medicinal plants for the ability to inhibit the expression of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) on the surface of murine endothelial cells (F-2), and mouse myeloid leukaemia cells (M1), respectively. Of 41 kinds (29 species, 24 genera, 16 families) of Malaysian plants tested, 10 and 19 plant samples significantly downregulated the expression of ICAM-1 and VCAM-1, respectively. Bioassay-directed fractionation of an extract prepared from the bark of Goniothalamus andersonii showed that its ingredients, goniothalamin (1) and goniodiol (2) inhibited the cell surface expression of both ICAM-1 and VCAM-1. The present results suggest that Malaysian medicinal plants may be abundant natural resources for immunosuppressive and antiinflammatory substances.

Abstract
To characterize the thermal stability of 3-isopropylmalate dehydrogenase (IPMDH) from an extreme thermophile, Thermus thermophilus, urea-induced unfolding of the enzyme and of its mesophilic counterpart from Escherichia coli was investigated at various temperatures. The unfolding curves were analyzed with a three-state model for E.coli IPMDH and with a two-state model for T.thermophilus IPMDH, to obtain the free energy change DeltaG degrees of each unfolding process. Other thermodynamic parameters, enthalpy change DeltaH, entropy change DeltaS and heat capacity change DeltaC(p), were derived from the temperature dependence of DeltaG degrees. The main feature of the thermophilic enzyme was its lower dependence of DeltaG degrees on temperature resulting from a low DeltaC(p). The thermophilic IPMDH had a significantly lower DeltaC(p), 1.73 kcal/mol.K, than that of E.coli IPMDH (20.7 kcal/mol.K). The low DeltaC(p) of T.thermophilus IPMDH could not be predicted from its change in solvent-accessible surface area DeltaASA. The results suggested that there is a large structural difference between the unfolded state of T.thermophilus and that of E.coli IPMDH. Another responsible factor for the higher thermal stability of T.thermophilus IPMDH was the increase in the most stable temperature T(s). The DeltaG degrees maximum of T.thermophilus IPMDH was much smaller than that of E.coli IPMDH. The present results clearly demonstrated that a higher melting temperature T(m) is not necessarily accompanied by a higher DeltaG degrees maximum.

Abstract
Ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) of stomach causes gastric mucosal injury. Complement can also cause tissue damage, however its role in gastric I/R injury has not been thoroughly investigated. We evaluated the effect of complement suppression in reducing damage to the gastric epithelium caused by local I/R. Local gastric ischemia was induced by clamping the left gastric artery. The blood-to-lumen clearance of 51Cr-labeled EDTA (51Cr-EDTA) served as an index of epithelial damage. 51Cr-EDTA clearance increased shortly after reperfusion with peak values at 10 min. Intraperitoneal administration of cobra venom factor (CVF; 50 units) prior to I/R, which reduced the serum complement value (CH50) to an undetectable level, remarkably suppressed the 51Cr-EDTA clearance following reperfusion. A monocarboxylic acid derivative of K-76 (K-76 COOH) reduced the CH50 by more than 30% (100 mg/kg) and 60% (200 mg/kg). Rats pretreated with K-76 significantly attenuated the increase in 51Cr-EDTA clearance produced by I/R. These results suggest that complement inhibitor could be used to protect gastric mucosal injury induced by local I/R stress.

Abstract
UNLABELLED We studied 160 ASA I or II patients undergoing elective otolaryngologic surgery in order to compare the anxiolytic effects of a novel 5-hydroxytryptamine-1A agonist, tandospirone, with diazepam. To monitor preoperative anxiety, the following variables were used: systolic and diastolic arterial pressure, heart rate, and the state anxiety score yielded by the Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory. We performed pretreatment evaluation on the day before surgery and posttreatment examination immediately after entry into the operating room. In a double-blinded, randomized design, four groups of 40 patients each received one of the following oral medications 90 min before entry into the operating room: 1) tandospirone 10 mg (T10 group); 2) tandospirone 30 mg (T30 group); 3) diazepam 10 mg (D group); or 4) placebo (P group). After premedication, the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory state anxiety decreased in the T10 (P < 0.02), T30 (P < 0.02), and D groups (P < 0.001), but it increased in the P group (P < 0.001). Tandospirone, 10 and 30 mg, safely reduced preoperative anxiety to a similar extent as oral diazepam 10 mg in patients undergoing elective otolaryngologic surgery. IMPLICATIONS Oral tandospirone reduces preoperative anxiety to a similar extent as oral diazepam in patients undergoing elective otolaryngologic surgery. This finding implies that tandospirone can be used as an oral premedicant drug for relieving anxiety before surgery.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine whether a high NaCl intake impairs endothelium-dependent and -independent vasodilation of forearm circulation in salt sensitive (SS) patients with essential hypertension. We evaluated the effects of intra-arterial acetylcholine (ACh) and isosorbide dinitrate (ISDN) on forearm hemodynamics in 29 patients with essential hypertension, while consuming a low NaCl (50 mmol/d) or high Na Cl (340 mmol/d) diet for 1 week. The forearm blood flow (FBF) was measured by strain-gauge plethysmography. Patients were classified as SS (n=12) or salt resistant (SR; n=17) based on salt-induced changes in blood pressures. The FBF responses of ACh and ISDN were similar in the SS and SR patients while on either NaCl diet, and was not altered by salt loading (ACh, SS: low NaCl 22.8+/-4.3 vs. high NaCl 21.1+/-3.6 ml/min per 100 ml, SR: low NaCl 22.5+/-4.0 vs. high NaCl 23.3+/-4.1 ml/min per 100 ml; ISDN, SS: low NaCl 13.9+/-2.1 vs. high NaCl 14.1+/-2.2 ml/min per 100 ml, SR: low NaCl 13.8+/-2.3 vs. high NaCl 14.0+/-2.2 ml/min per 100 ml). There were no significant differences in the vascular responses to ACh and ISDN in the presence of N(G)-monomethyl-L-arginine, a nitric oxide synthase inhibitor, in either group for either NaCl diet. These findings suggest that forearm resistance artery endothelial function may not be influenced by salt loading in either SS patients which finding may play a role in determining salt sensitivity in patients with essential hypertension or SR patients.

Abstract
HYPOTHESIS The purpose of this study was to elucidate whether GJB2 mutations are responsible for childhood deafness in Southeast Asia. BACKGROUND GJB2 mutations are responsible for a large part of childhood deafness in many countries. In Whites, there is a common mutation (35delG) that accounts for about 70 to 80% of the GJB2 mutations. Previously, we and others reported a common GJB2 mutation (235delC) in Japanese patients with prelingual deafness. The association of the 235delC mutation with a single haplotype suggested a founder effect of the mutation. METHODS We analyzed the GJB2 gene in 17 deaf patients from 12 unrelated families in Thailand. Genomic DNA was extracted from peripheral lymphocytes of each patient and the entire coding region of the GJB2 gene was sequenced. RESULTS GJB2 mutations were found in 4 patients in 3 families. Patient 1 was a homozygote of 235delC. Patient 2 was a compound heterozygote of 235delC and W24X (71G --> A). Patient 3A and 3B (in 1 family) were heterozygotes of a novel mutation M34L (100A --> T). CONCLUSION The 235delC mutation may be widely distributed in Asian countries outside of Japan.

Abstract
Recently, a number of hearing-impaired individuals with mitochondrial genome (mtDNA) mutations have been reported, and it is well known that the mtDNA mutations are responsible for the hearing disorder. We have demonstrated that the mtDNA mutation A3243G is responsible for adult-onset sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). At the same time, a case in which SNHL occurred within 2 years from birth has been reported. The mtDNA mutations may be possible causes of prelingual deafness. In the present study, the mtDNA fragments from the deaf-mute persons were amplified by polymerase chain reaction, followed by a restriction enzyme fragment length polymorphism method and direct sequencing. We failed to find A3243G involvement in 46 deaf-mutes but found that 8.7% of them had A1555G which is an important cause of prelingual deafness, no less than autosomal recessive inheritance, in Japan.

Abstract
Pulmonary functions are classified two kinds of functions which are respiratory and non-respiratory. We explained new clinical significant results by looking at the usual respiratory pulmonary function tests and devices in this paper. We found two new indexes on uneveness of ventilation by analyzed compartments of forced expiratory curves(Tiffneu curves) and at improvement of CO single breathing method on diffusing capacity test. We found new index on bronchial anaphylaxis for bronchial asthma by time constant measured from forced expiratory curves, also. We found new index on ventilatory efficiency at developing the automatic respiratory resistance meter by the forced oscillation method of Du Bois, too.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the interdependent and independent effects of hypertension and obesity on endothelial function in humans. We evaluated the forearm blood flow (FBF) response to acetylcholine, an endothelium-dependent vasodilator, and isosorbide dinitrate (ISDN), an endothelium-independent vasodilator, in 16 lean and 12 obese normotensive individuals and the 18 lean and 15 obese hypertensive patients with no history of smoking, hypercholesterolemia, diabetes mellitus, or renal dysfunction. The FBF was measured using a mercury-filled Silastic strain-gauge plethysmograph. The systolic and diastolic blood pressures (BP) and forearm vascular resistance were significantly greater in hypertensive patients than in the normotensive individuals. Insulin resistance, determined by a homeostatic model assessment (HOMA), was significantly greater in the obese group than in the lean group (3.59 +/- 1.68 v 1.91 +/- 1.12, P < .01). There was no significant difference in the HOMA index between normotensive and hypertensive subjects regardless of weight. The response of FBF to acetylcholine was greatest in lean normotensive individuals and least in obese hypertensive patients (40.5 +/- 8.5 and 10.4 +/- 2.8 mL/min/100 mL of tissue, P < .001 v other groups). The FBF response was similar in obese normotensive individuals and lean hypertensive patients (24.1 +/- 7.9 and 19.3 +/- 3.2 mL/min/100 mL of tissue). The vasodilatory effect of ISDN was similar in all four groups. Multiple regression analysis revealed that the maximal FBF response to acetylcholine correlated independently with age (P = .043), obesity (P = .012), HOMA index (P = .002), and mean BP (P < .001). These findings suggest that obesity and hypertension are independently involved in abnormal endothelium-dependent vasodilation by attenuated nitric oxide production.

Abstract
Association between obesity and hypertension has been well recognized. A reduction in the body weight of over-weight hypertensive patients is a recommended lifestyle modification. The purpose of our study is to examine the relationship of insulin sensitivity and autonomic nervous activity with reduction of blood pressure by the calorie restriction. We evaluated the heart rate variability, nocturnal change of blood pressure and insulin resistance before and after a short-term low-calorie diet in 12 overweight essential hypertensives. After a week of standard diet (2000 kcal), 2 weeks of low-calorie diet (800 kcal) with normal sodium content induced a significant reduction in body mass index, triglyceride, fasting immunoreactive protein, homeostasis model assessment as an index of insulin resistance, and urinary excretion of sodium and potassium. Systolic blood pressure was significantly reduced both in daytime and night-time after the low-calorie diet (daytime, 134.5+/-6.0 to 122.0+/-4.1 mmHg; night-time, 126.8+/-5.2 to 113.4+/-7.2 mmHg). In daytime, diastolic blood pressure was also reduced (90.3+/-2.1 to 88.1+/-4.8 mmHg). Although heart rate was not significantly reduced, a rise of high frequency in night-time (346+/-82 to 572+/-108 ms2) and a fall of low frequency/high frequency in day-time (3.5+/-0.4 to 2.6+/-0.1) was significant after a low-calorie diet. In conclusion, weight loss by low-calorie diet with a constant intake of sodium, reduced blood pressure in obese hypertensives by improvement of vagal nervous activity and insulin resistance.

Abstract
Mucosal addressin cell adhesion molecule-1 (MAdCAM-1) is a 60-kDa endothelial cell adhesion glycoprotein that regulates lymphocyte trafficking to Peyer's patches and lymph nodes. Although it is widely agreed that MAdCAM-1 induction is involved in chronic gut inflammation, few studies have investigated regulation of MAdCAM-1 expression. We used two endothelial lines [bEND.3 (brain) and SVEC (high endothelium)] to study the signal paths that regulate MAdCAM-1 expression in response to tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha using RT-PCR, blotting, adhesion, and immunofluorescence. TNF-alpha induced both MAdCAM-1 mRNA and protein in a dose- and time-dependent manner. This induction was tyrosine kinase (TK), p42/44, p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), and nuclear factor (NF)-kappa B/poly-ADP ribose polymerase (PARP) dependent. Because MAdCAM-1 is regulated via MAPKs, we examined mitogen/extracellular signal-regulated kinase (MEK)-1/2 activation in SVEC. We found that MEK-1/2 is activated by TNF-alpha within minutes and is dependent on TK and p42/44 MAPKs. Similarly, TNF-alpha activated NF-kappa B through TK, p42/44, p38 MAPKs, and PARP pathways in SVEC cells. MAdCAM-1 was also shown to be frequently distributed to endothelial junctions both in vitro and in vivo. Cytokines like TNF-alpha stimulate MAdCAM-1 in high endothelium via TK, p38, p42/22 MAPKs, and NF-kappa B/PARP. MAdCAM-1 expression requires NF-kappa B translocation through both direct p42/44 and indirect p38 MAPK pathways in high endothelial cells.

Abstract
The complete genomic sequence of an aerobic thermoacidophilic crenarchaeon, Sulfolobus tokodaii strain7 which optimally grows at 80 degrees C, at low pH, and under aerobic conditions, has been determined by the whole genome shotgun method with slight modifications. The genomic size was 2,694,756 bp long and the G + C content was 32.8%. The following RNA-coding genes were identified: a single 16S-23S rRNA cluster, one 5S rRNA gene and 46 tRNA genes (including 24 intron-containing tRNA genes). The repetitive sequences identified were SR-type repetitive sequences, long dispersed-type repetitive sequences and Tn-like repetitive elements. The genome contained 2826 potential protein-coding regions (open reading frames, ORFs). By similarity search against public databases, 911 (32.2%) ORFs were related to functional assigned genes, 921 (32.6%) were related to conserved ORFs of unknown function, 145 (5.1%) contained some motifs, and remaining 849 (30.0%) did not show any significant similarity to the registered sequences. The ORFs with functional assignments included the candidate genes involved in sulfide metabolism, the TCA cycle and the respiratory chain. Sequence comparison provided evidence suggesting the integration of plasmid, rearrangement of genomic structure, and duplication of genomic regions that may be responsible for the larger genomic size of the S. tokodaii strain7 genome. The genome contained eukaryote-type genes which were not identified in other archaea and lacked the CCA sequence in the tRNA genes. The result suggests that this strain is closer to eukaryotes among the archaea strains so far sequenced. Abstract
A newly selected cold-adapted mutant 3-isopropylmalate dehydrogenase (IPMDH) from a random mutant library was a double mutant containing the mutations I11V and S92F that were found in cold-adapted mutant IPMDHs previously isolated. To elucidate the effect of each mutation on enzymatic activity, I11V and six multiple mutant IPMDHs were constructed and analyzed. All of the multiple mutant IPMDHs were found to be improved in catalytic activity at moderate temperatures by increasing the k(cat) with a simultaneous increase of K(m) for the coenzyme NAD(+). k(cat) was improved by a decrease in the activation enthalpy, DeltaH( not equal). The multiple mutants did not show large reduction in thermal stability, and one of them showed enhanced thermal stability. Mutation from I11 to V was revealed to have a stabilizing effect. Mutants showed increased thermal stability when the mutation I11V was combined. This indicates that it is possible to construct mutants with enhanced thermal stability by combining stabilizing mutation. No additivity was observed for the thermodynamic properties of catalytic reaction in the multiple mutant IPMDHs, implying that the structural changes induced by the mutations were interacting with each other. This indicates that careful and detailed tuning is required for enhancing activity in contrast to thermal stability.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Enhanced MAdCAM-1 (mucosal addressin cell adhesion molecule-1) expression is associated with the aetiology of inflammatory bowel disease, but little is known about MAdCAM-1: regulation, or how inflammatory bowel disease therapies modulate MAdCAM-1. AIM To examine how agents currently used to treat inflammatory bowel disease affect MAdCAM-1: induced by tnf-alpha in an in vitro model of inflammatory bowel disease. METHODS Endothelial monolayers were pretreated with dexamethasone (DEX): 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA), 6-mercaptopurine (6-MP), sulfasalazine or interleukin-10: (IL-10: prior to TNF-alpha (20 ng/mL), and MAdCAM-1: measured by Western blotting, RT-PCR, EMSA and lymphocyte adhesion assays. RESULTS MAdCAM-1: was induced dose- and time-dependently by TNF-alpha on endothelial cells. Either dexamethasone or IL-10: reduced TNF-alpha-induced MAdCAM-1: protein, mRNA and lymphocyte adhesion. However, neither 5-ASA, sulfasalazine nor 6-MP blocked MAdCAM-1 induction. CONCLUSIONS Our data indicate that dexamethasone or IL-10 can exert therapeutic activity in inflammatory bowel disease through MAdCAM-1 inhibition. 5-ASA, sulfasalazine and 6-MP, while beneficial in inflammatory bowel disease, do not directly control MAdCAM-1, and are beneficial through inhibition of other inflammatory processes.
