Occupational Lead Exposure Ototoxicity Evaluated With Distortion-Product Otoacoustic Emissions

OBJECTIVES

To evaluate the extent of hearing loss among pottery workers in Mexico exposed to lead.

DESIGN

The authors conducted a cross-sectional study including 315 adult pottery workers. Auditory function was evaluated by air conduction pure-tone audiometry (pure-tone average) and distortion-product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) levels (amplitude and signal-to-noise ratio). Lead exposure was assessed with a single blood sample test and classified as low, medium, and high according to blood lead tertiles. Logistic regression models were calculated for the association between blood lead levels, pure-tone average, and DPOAE records.

RESULTS

Median (25th-75th) blood lead levels were 14 μg/dL (7.5-22.6 μg/dL). The audiometric pattern and DPOAE records were similar across blood lead levels groups in all frequencies, and no statistically significant differences were found. Adjusted logistic regression models showed no increase in the odds for hearing thresholds >25 dB (HL) and DPOAE absence associated with blood lead levels, and no dose-response pattern was observed ( p > 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

Given the results from this cross-sectional study, no association was found between blood lead levels and hearing loss assessed with DPOAE. Future longitudinal work should consider chronic lead exposure estimates among underrepresented populations, which can potentially inform safer work practices to minimize the risk of ototoxicity.

The activity of 210Pb in cigarette smoked in Kazakhstan

The radon decay product 210Pb is a known component of tobacco. In this study, the activity concentration of 210Pb in the most popular cigarette brands (six samples) for Kazakhstan consumers was determined by beta spectrometry. The activity levels of 210Pb ranged between 2.69 ± 0.27 and 27.42 ± 2.74 mBq per cigarette. Higher activity concentrations for 210Pb were found in Sample No.4 and showed an excess of the world average by 1.8 times. The average activity concentrations of 210Pb in cigarette tobacco were 10.42 ± 1.04 mBq cig-1. The daily activities inhaled in the lungs of a smoker, and the resulting effective doses due to cigarette smoking were calculated. Effective doses per year due to cigarette smoking were calculated assuming that 42.13% of the 210Pb in tobacco were retained in the lungs of the smokers. It is concluded that for a smoker in Kazakhstan, the average effective dose ranges from 9.1 ± 0.9 μSv/year to 92.8 ± 9.3 μSv/year for a cigarette consumption of one pack of cigarettes per day. The results indicate that the annual effective doses from inhalation of 210Pb due to smoking one pack of cigarettes per day are from 7 to 58 times (for different types of cigarettes) greater than the annual effective doses from ingestion of radionuclides via the diet.

Ecological and human health hazards of soil heavy metals after wildfire: A case study of Liangshan Yi autonomous prefecture, China

Soil samples were collected in at different depths from the conflagration area in Liangshan Yi Autonomous Region, China, to investigate the distribution characteristics and ecological and human health risks of heavy metals after a wildfire. The samples collected comprise wildfire ash (WA) above the soil surface, ash soil (AS) 0-5 cm, and plain soil (PS) 5-15 cm below the soil surface. Additionally, reference soil (RS) was collected from a nearby unburned area at the same latitude as the conflagration area. The results showed that the concentrations of zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), and cadmium (Cd) in the WA and AS were significantly higher than in reference soil (RS) (p < 0.05). Concentrations of Pb in the PS were 2.52 times higher than that in RS (17.9 mg kg-1) (p < 0.05). The AS and WA had the highest Index of potential ecological risks (RI > 600). In addition, The Cd in AS and WA contributed the most to the highest Improved nemerow index (INI) and RI with a contribution of more than 80%. The concentration of heavy metals was used to establish non-carcinogenic effects and cancer risks in humans via three exposure pathways: accident ingestion of soil, dermal contact with soil, and inhalation of soil particles. Hazard index (HI) values of each sample were all less than 1, indicating the non-carcinogenic risk was within the acceptable range and would not adversely affect the local population's health. The Cancer risk (CR) values of Cr, As, Cd, and Ni were all below 1 × 10-6, indicating that heavy metal pollution from this wildfire did not pose a cancer risk to residents.

Sustainable triethylenetetramine modified sulfonated graphene oxide/chitosan composite for enhanced adsorption of Pb(II), Cd(II), and Ni(II) ions

A novel sulfonated group and triethylenetetramine modified GO/chitosan (GO-CS) adsorbent (T-SGO-CS) was successfully prepared and utilized for the adsorption of heavy metal ions from single-metal, binary-metal, and ternary-metal solutions. In a single system, the adsorption capacity was 312.28 mg/g for Pb2+, 260.52 mg/g for Cd2+, and 84.61 mg/g for Ni2+, whereas, Adsorption of Pb(II), Cd(II), and Ni(II) in binary and ternary systems was systematically studied. In tertiary systems, the effect of competitive adsorption was more pronounced. In addition, T-SGO-CS exhibited a high adsorption capacity and was recyclable for Pb2+, Cd2+, and Ni2+. T-SGO-CS is a novel and highly efficient adsorbent for omnidirectionally enhancing the adsorption of Pb2+, Cd2+, and Ni2+, as demonstrated by these results. Therefore, T-SGO-CS could be investigated as a potential new material for future applications in heavy metal removal.

Lead exposure and student outcomes: A study of Flint schools

This paper estimates the impacts of cumulative lead exposure on the short-run discipline and academic achievement of elementary school students. An exogenous, heterogeneous shock of lead-in-water levels within classrooms at Flint Community Schools provides the treatment variation used to focus on the understudied, short-run effects of lead on older children. At the mean level of classroom lead exposure disciplinary actions increased by 8 actions per grade within each school, and the share of students proficient in both math and reading declined. These results may help explain observed disparities in both behavior and academic achievement for underprivileged groups.

Variability in Chemical Composition and Biochemical Activities of Mentha x piperita L. Essential Oil, in Response to Mycorrhizal Symbiosis and Heavy Metal Stress

The present paper highlights the effect of Pb/Cd-stress and/or mycorrhizal colonization by Glomus Intraradices on yield, chemical composition, cytotoxicity and antimicrobial activity of Mentha x piperita L. essential oil. Our findings showed that mycorrhizal colonization could be used to improve the essential oil yield of M. x piperita, either in non-stressed or Pb/Cd-stressed plants. GC-MS analysis revealed three chemotypes: linalool/pulegone (32.6/30.8 %) chemotype in essential oils of non-mycorrhizal Pb-stressed plants, menthone/menthyl acetate (30.3/25.1 %) chemotype in essential oils of non-mycorrhizal Cd-stressed plants and menthol (44.6 %) chemotype in essential oils of non-mycorrhizal non-stressed plants, mycorrhizal non-stressed plants and mycorrhizal Pb/Cd-stressed plants. The cytotoxicity of M. x piperita essential oil, evaluated by brine shrimp lethality bioassay, was increased in presence of Pb/Cd-stress (from 379.58 to 72.84 μm/mL) and decreased in mycorrhizal plants (from 379.58 to 482.32 μm/mL). The antimicrobial activity of M. x piperita essential oil, evaluated by disc diffusion method and determination of Minimum Inhibitory Concentration against ten microorganisms, was enhanced by the mycorrhizal colonization and deceased by the Pb/Cd-stress. In conclusion, the inoculation of medicinal plants with mycorrhizal fungi is a real avenue for alleviating abiotic stress and/or increasing the quantity and quality of secondary metabolites in terms of biological activities.

Potential of using Alfa grass fibers (Stipa Tenacissima L.) to remove Pb2+, Cu2+, and Zn2+ from an aqueous solution

This study used alfa grass fibres as a natural low-cost adsorbent to remove lead, copper, and zinc ions from aqueous solutions. The adsorbent was characterized by FTIR, SEM, BET surface area, ATG, and XRD techniques. The effects of pH, contact time, initial metal concentration, and adsorbent dosage on the adsorption efficiency were evaluated in batch experiments. The results showed that the adsorption of all metals was fast, and optimal removal efficiency was achieved within 25 min of contact time using 5000 mg/L of Alfa fibres at pH 6.3. The adsorption selectivity order was Pb2+ > Cu2+ > Zn2+ with Pb2+ removal efficiencies up to 97.6%. The adsorption kinetics were best explained by a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The experimental adsorption data fitted very well with the Langmuir isotherm model, and less well with the Freundlich and Temkin isotherm models. The maximum adsorption capacities were respectively 14.492, 11.904, and 8.695 mg/g for Pb2+, Cu2+, and Zn2+. The results of this study indicated that Alfa fibres could be used as effective adsorbent for the removal of Pb2+, Cu2+, and Zn2+ from aqueous solutions.

Virtual calibration for in vivo measurement of Pb-210 activity in the skull using BOMAB, MIRD, and MIDA phantoms

The counting efficiency calibration for in vivo measurement is crucial to derive the activity of radionuclides residing inside a monitored subject. Recently, virtual calibration based on computational phantoms has become popular, yet some key questions remain unresolved. Here, we focus on the in vivo measurement of Pb-210 in the skull and systematically examine how virtual calibration compares to those using physical phantoms and how the variety of computational phantoms affects the derived counting efficiency. It is found that the virtually calibrated efficiency based on the MIDA phantom, which characterizes the highest anatomical fidelity, shows reasonable consistency with the experimental counterpart, with a relative bias of approximately 10%. However, in comparison to the case based on the MIDA phantom, those based on the BOMAB and MIRD phantoms show larger deviation, demonstrating underestimations on the counting efficiency by 51% and 42%, respectively. This finding underscores the critical role of computational phantoms in the virtual calibration. This study contributes to the development of techniques for assessing lung cancer risk resulting from chronic radon exposure through in vivo measurement of skeletal Pb-210 activity.

An environmentally friendly strategy for reducing the environmental risks of heavy metals adsorbed by kaolinite

Plenty of heavy metals (HMs) that are adsorbed on clay minerals (such as kaolinite), in addition to low molecular-weight organic acids (such as oxalic acid (OA)) with high activities, are widespread in the natural environment. In the present study, the effects of OA on the environmental behaviors of Pb2+/Cd2+ adsorbed by kaolinite have been investigated. The effectiveness and mechanisms of calcium silicate (CS) and magnesium silicate (MS) in reducing the environmental risks of the HMs have also been studied. The results showed that the releases of Pb2+/Cd2+ increased with an increasing concentration of OA. When different dosages of CS/MS were added to the aging system, a redistribution of HMs took place and the free form of Pb2+/Cd2+ decreased to very low levels. Also, the unextractable Pb2+/Cd2+ increased to high levels. Furthermore, a series of characterizations showed that the released HMs were re-captured by the CS/MS. In addition, the CS immobilized the OA in the solution during the aging process, which also facilitated an immobilization of the carbon element in the environment. In general, the present study has contributed to a further understanding of the transport behaviors of the HMs in natural environments, and of the interactions between CS (or MS), the environmental media, and the heavy metal contaminants. In addition, this study has also provided an eco-friendly strategy for an effective remediation of heavy metal pollution.

Comparison of organic and synthetic amendments for poplar phytomanagement in copper and lead-contaminated calcareous soil

Soil remediation can be achieved through organic and synthetic amendments, but the differences in the phytomanagement of trace metal-contaminated land are unclear. We conducted an outdoor microcosm experiment to simulate the effects of organic amendment citric acid and synthetic amendments EDTA and EGTA on poplar phytomanagement of copper (Cu)- and lead (Pb)-contaminated calcareous land at doses of 0, 1, 3, and 9 mmol kg-1. We found that soil-bioavailable Cu and Pb contents increased by 2.11-27.27 and 1.48-269 times compared to the control, respectively. Additionally, synthetic amendments had a long-lasting (within 25 days) effect on metal bioavailability relative to organic amendments. Consequently, organic amendments increased the root Cu and Pb contents by 2.68-48.61% and 6.60-49.51%, respectively, whereas synthetic amendments increased them by 65.94-260% and 12.50-103%. The Cu and Pb contents in the leaves were lower than those in the roots, and increased significantly by 47.04-179% and 237-601%, respectively, only under synthetic amendments. Interestingly, none of the amendments increased the Cu and Pb content in poplar stems (<5 mg kg-1), which remained within the normal range for terrestrial plants. Regardless of the type and addition level, the amendments did not affect poplar growth. Nevertheless, synthetic amendments caused a significant redistribution of metals (Cu: 22-32%; Pb: 23-53%) from the topsoil into the subsoil within the root zone at medium and high levels relative to organic amendments. Therefore, organic and synthetic amendments can assist poplar phytomanagement with a phytostabilization strategy for Cu- and Pb-contaminated calcareous land and obtain marketable wood biomass. Moreover, collecting leaf litter is crucial when using synthetic amendments at optimum concentration levels.

and Thymus zygis L.) from pharmacies in Poland: the impurity profile and comprehensive toxicological risk assessment

Traditional herbal medicinal products (THMP) with Thymi herba (Thymus vulgaris L. and Thymus zygis L.) are very popular among the European population. The idea of our study was the toxicological analysis of lead impurities in THMP with Thymi herba obtained from Polish pharmacies. For this purpose, we prepared the impurity profiles and comprehensive toxicological risk assessment. The Pb impurity profiles show lead impurities in all samples investigated (in the range: 2.15-6.99 μg/L). The estimations of Pb impurities in the single dose (32.25-105.01 ng/single dose) and in the daily dose (64.50-210.00 ng/day) were based on the posology recommended by the manufacturers. All the results obtained meet the standards of the ICH Q3D (R1) guideline on elemental impurities according to the levels of Pb. It can be concluded that all investigated THMPs with Thymi herba available in Poland should not represent any health risk to adults.

Molecular mechanism of selenium against lead-induced apoptosis in chicken brainstem relating to heat shock protein, selenoproteins, and inflammatory cytokines

Extensive application of lead (Pb) brought about environmental pollution and toxic reactions of organisms. Selenium (Se) has the effect of antagonizing Pb poisoning in humans and animals. However, it is still unclear how Pb causes brainstem toxicity. In the present study, we wanted to investigate whether Se can alleviate Pb toxicity in chicken brainstems by reducing apoptosis. One hundred and eighty chickens were randomly divided into four groups, namely the control group, the Se group, the Pb group, and the Se/Pb group. Morphological examination, ultrastructural observation, relative mRNA expressions of genes on heat shock proteins (HSPs); selenoproteins; inflammatory cytokines; and apoptosis-related factors were investigated. The results showed that Pb exposure led to tissue damage and apoptosis in chicken brainstems. Furthermore, an atypical expression of HSPs (HSP27, HSP40, HSP60, HSP70, and HSP90); selenoprotein family glutathione peroxidase (GPx) 1, GPx2, GPx3, and GPx4), thioredoxin reductases (Txnrd) (Txnrd1, Txnrd2, and Txnrd3), dio selenoprotein famliy (diodothyronine deiodinases (Dio)1, Dio2, and Dio3), as well as other selenoproteins (selenoprotein (Sel)T, SelK, SelS, SelH, SelM, SelU, SelI, SelO, Selpb, selenoprotein n1 (Sepn1), Sepp1, Sepx1, Sepw1, 15-kDa selenoprotein (Sep15), and selenophosphate synthetases 2 (SPS2)); inflammatory cytokines (Interleukin 2 (IL-2), IL-4, IL-6, IL-12β, IL-17, and Interferon-γ (IFN-γ)); and apoptosis-related genes (B-cell lymphoma-2 (Bcl-2), tumor protein 53 (p53), Bcl-2 Associated X (Bax), Cytochrome c (Cyt c), and Caspase-3) were identified. An inflammatory reaction and apoptosis were induced in chicken brainstems after exposure to Pb. Se alleviated the abnormal expression of HSPs, selenoproteins, inflammatory cytokines, and apoptosis in brainstem tissues of chickens treated with Pb. The results indicated that HSPs, selenoproteins, inflammatory, and apoptosis were involved in Se-resisted Pb poisoning. Overall, Se had resistance effect against Pb poisoning, and can be act as an antidote for Pb poisoning in animals.

Essential and non-essential elements in marine silverside Odontesthes argentinensis from southwestern Atlantic coast: Tissues bioaccumulation, biomagnification and public health risk assessment

In order to assess the metal pollution in the southwestern Atlantic coast, levels of eleven metals: Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sr, and Zn and one metalloid: As in water and tissues of Odontesthes argentinensis from the Samborombón Bay (SB) and Partido de La Costa (PC) were examined. Additionally, bioconcentration, and bioaccumulation factors, estimated daily intake (EDI) for adults and children, and the hazard risk for fishermen and general populations were evaluated. Cadmium, Cu and Zn levels in the water samples exceeded the limits established by international guidelines for the protection of aquatic life in marine environments (CCME). The liver showed the highest concentrations of As, Cu, Fe, and Zn, while muscle showed the least levels of all elements examined. Bioaccumulation of Cd, Cu, Mn, Pb and Zn were observed in all tissues, while Ba and Sr bioaccumulated significantly in the gills. The fish δ15N values significantly varied between sites, however, no biodilution or biomagnification was observed. The Target Hazard Quotients (THQ) and the Carcinogenic Risk (CR) indices suggest that there is no human health risk to the fishermen and general populations from the O. argentinensis consumption. Furthermore, As (27%) and Cr (33%) concentrations in silversides from PC and SB, respectively, exceeded the levels recommended by local and international guidelines.

Assessment of radiation dose to people and wildife inhabiting the Grote Nete catchment in Belgium

We evaluate the impact of the radiological contamination of the Grote Nete catchment in Belgium to people and non-human biota. This region has received effluents from the phosphate and nuclear industries via tributaries of the Grote Nete river in past decades, resulting in the presence of radionuclides such as 241Am, 60Co, 137Cs, 40K, 210Pb, 238Pu, 239,240Pu, 226Ra, 228Ra, 228Th, 232Th, 234U, 235U and 238U. During the period 2016-2021, we measured these radionuclides in the water column, the bed sediment and riverbanks. Additionally, we carried out radon measurements on the riverbanks in 2022. Based on these measurements, the dose rates to people were calculated for different potential exposure scenarios, using the SCK CEN biosphere tool. We also performed an assessment of exposure of ionising radiation to non-human biota (including 222Rn and its daughters) using the ERICA Tool. We observed three types of areas at the Grote Nete riverbank: (a) a lower category exposure with 226Ra concentrations reflecting purely Belgian background values; (b) a middle category with enhanced 226Ra, mainly adsorbed on clay minerals and (c) an upper category extending to maximum values in the order of 103 Bq kg-1. The main component of the dose rate for terrestrial and aquatic organisms is 226Ra followed by 210Pb (terrestrial) or 228Ra, (aquatic). The anthropogenic vector of the contamination (40K, 60Co, 90Sr, 137Cs, 228Th, 232Th, 234,235,238U, 238,239Pu, 241Am) makes a negligible contribution to dose. Overall, the Grote Nete wildlife is not under significant risk from exposure to soil or water-borne radionuclides and radon emanating from the soil, even if the ERICA benchmark of 10 μGy h-1 is occasionally exceeded for 226Ra, 210Pb or 228Ra, because exposures are below the levels at which effects are known to occur. For people, radon inhalation is the main exposure pathway and exposures can reach 1 mSv y-1 for hypothetical residents living at the riverbanks and remaining most of their time in the area, but it can be expected that exposures are much lower at increasing distances from the river. It is concluded that neither people nor the environment are at any significant radiological risk from this situation.

Using VARSKIN+v1.2 to estimate dose from direct skin contamination with radionuclides 223 Ra, 212 Pb and 225 Ac; considerations for Nuclear Medicine staff and associated Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

OBJECTIVE

To calculate depth-weighted doses for 223 Ra, 212 Pb and 225 Ac for the skin sites of trunk, arms/legs, face, wrist, back of hand, fingertip, back and side of fingers using VARSKIN+v1.2.

METHODS

Published depth distribution histograms of the basal cells were used with dose averaging in VARSKIN+v1.2. A density correction factor was applied for the 1 g/cc within VARSKIN. Results were compared to the regulatory 70 µm depth and to average depth values for the skin sites.

RESULTS

223 Ra has no alpha component at the regulatory 70 µm. This dose is exceeded by the depth-weighted dose rates for all sites (except the fingertip) with factors ×74 (back of finger) to x3600 (trunk). 212 Pb and 225 Ac have alpha contributions at 70 µm. . For 212 Pb, this dose value is greater by over ×2 than the depth-weighted dose rate for the wrist, back of hand, and finger sites, and underestimates dose rates for the other sites. For 225 Ac, the 70µm dose rate is exceeded by the depth-weighted dose rates for the trunk, face, arms/legs by factors of ×4-10. Using fixed depth values, the depth-weighted dose rates are larger for all sites except the fingertip. The skin dose is also calculated for biological half-lives of 1, 3 and 6 h. Using the depth-weighted dose rates and a 3 h biological half-life, the activity for 500 mSv is in the range 9-177 Bq for the trunk, face, arms/legs, wrist and hand for all three radionuclides.

CONCLUSION

For alpha-emitting radionuclides a depth-weighted calculation gives more representative dose values. The very low activity values for 500 mSv skin dose to be exceeded have implications for appropriate staff PPE and training.

Phytoremediation and environmental effects of three Amaranthaceae plants in contaminated soil under intercropping systems

Intercropping is a widely used agricultural system; however, the effect of intercropping between accumulator plants on phytoextraction in heavy metal-contaminated soils remains unknown. Here, a field experiment was conducted to investigate the phytoextraction efficiency and related environmental effects of three Amaranthaceae plants (Amaranthus hypochondriacus, Celosia argentea, and Pfaffia glomerata) using mono- and intercropping models. In monocropping, the total biomass of A. hypochondriacus was only 51.2 % of that of C. argentea. Compared with monocropping, intercropping reduced the fresh weight per plant of A. hypochondriacus by 53.0 % (intercropping with C. argentea) and 40.5 % (intercropping with P. glomerata) but increased the biomass per plant of C. argentea and P. glomerata by 128.2 and 14.2 %, respectively. The Cd uptake of the three plants in the monocropping models showed the following trend: C. argentea > P. glomerata > A. hypochondriacus. Interplanting A. hypochondriacus and C. argentea further increased the phytoextraction efficiency by 361.2 % (compared with A. hypochondriacus monocropping) and 52.0 % (compared with C. argentea monocropping). Soil exchangeable Cd, Pb, Cu, Zn, K, and P, soil N-NO3- and N-NH4+, soil common bacteria and arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM) fungi, and soil total organic carbon (TOC) play key roles in Cd and Pb uptake by the three accumulator plants (p < 0.05). The biomass of common bacteria, Gm+, Gm- bacteria, fungi, AM fungi, and actinomycetes increased with the three accumulators planted in the mono- and intercropping models. Compared with C. argentea monocropping, the biomass of soil microbes in the rhizosphere soil was obviously increased in the intercropping A. hypochondriacus and C. argentea models. These results suggest that interplanting A. hypochondriacus and C. argentea can increase Cd removal efficiency from Cd-contaminated soils, and this model could be recommended to remediate Cd-contaminated soils on a field scale.

DNAzyme-driven bipedal DNA walker and catalytic hairpin assembly multistage signal amplified electrochemical biosensor based on porous AuNPs@Zr-MOF for detection of Pb2

As a highly toxic and refractory heavy metal contaminant, Pb2+ seriously endangers human health. The problems of low sensitivity and high cost of signal labeling widely exist in common electrochemical biosensors. Herein, a Pb2+ electrochemical biosensor was constructed using a DNAzyme-driven bipedal DNA Walker and catalytic hairpin assembly as the multistage signal amplification strategy. Compared with Zr-MOF, AuNPs@Zr-MOF has a larger porosity and specific surface area, which can effectively load MB to amplify the current signal. Pb2+ can trigger a dual signal amplification reaction to gradually accumulate the signal of methylene blue/gold nanoparticle @ zirconium-based metal organic frameworks (MB/AuNPs@Zr-MOF) on the electrode. The ingeniously designed sensing strategy realized the analysis of Pb2+ with a wide linear range from 0.05 to 1000 nmol/L and a lower limit of detection (LOD) of 4.65 pmol/L. In addition, the sensor has strong anti-interference ability and can accurately detect Pb2+ in various food samples.

DNAzyme amplified dispersion state change of gold nanoparticles and its dual optical channels for ultrasensitive and facile detection of lead ion in preserved eggs

A dual-mode sensing platform for Pb2+ was constructed based on the dual optical channels of Au NPs system with the amplification of DNAzyme, and it was successfully applied for Pb2+ determination in preserved egg with satisfactory results. The presence of Pb2+ activated the DNAzyme and induced the dispersion change of Au NPs in high salt concentration. The sequent absorption change of Au NPs was translated to the fluorescence change of carbon dots through FRET, and the scattering change was transferred to grey value of images involving the Tyndall effect. Thus, a sensing platform based on fluorescence and colorimetric dual-technique was achieved for Pb2+ detection, under the optimized conditions. With the assistance of DNAzyme, the linear range of fluorometric and colorimetric method were 2.0 × 10-14 ∼ 8.0 × 10-10 mol/L and 2.4 × 10-13 ∼ 9.5 × 10-9 mol/L, respectively. The dual-mode sensing platform demonstrated its promising application in the environmental monitoring and food safety field.

The impact of recycling polyaluminium chloride and anionic polyacrylamide water treatment residuals on heavy metal adsorption in soils: implications for stormwater bioretention systems

Despite the high adsorption capacity of polyaluminum chloride and anionic polyacrylamide water treatment residuals (PAC-APAM WTRs) for Pb2+, Cd2+, Cu2+, and Zn2+, their influence on the adsorption behavior of heavy metals in traditional bioretention soil media remains unclear. This study investigated the impact of PAC-APAM WTRs at a 20% weight ratio on the adsorption removal of Pb2+, Cd2+, Cu2+, and Zn2+ in three types of soils. The results demonstrated improved heavy metal adsorption in the presence of PAC-APAM WTRs, with enhanced removal observed at higher pH levels and temperatures. The addition of PAC-APAM WTRs augmented the maximum adsorption capacity for Pb2+ (from 0.98 to 3.98%), Cd2+ (from 0.52 to 10.99%), Cu2+ (from 3.69 to 36.79%), and Zn2+ (from 2.63 to 13.46%). The Langmuir model better described the data in soils with and without PAC-APAM WTRs. The pseudo-second-order model more accurately described the adsorption process, revealing an irreversible chemical process, although qe demonstrated improvement with the addition of PAC-APAM WTRs. This study affirms the potential of PAC-APAM WTRs as an amendment for mitigating heavy metal pollution in stormwater bioretention systems. Further exploration of the engineering application of PAC-APAM WTRs, particularly in field conditions for the removal of dissolved heavy metals, is recommended.

Alginate-encapsulated biochar as an effective soil ameliorant for reducing Pb phytoavailability to lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.)

The alginate-biochar formulation for metal removal from aquatic environments has been widely tried but its use for lowering phytoavailability of metals in the soil-crop continuum is limited. Biochar has been increasingly used as a soil amendment due to its potential for soil carbon sequestration and sorption capacity. Handling of powdery biochar as a soil top-dressing material is, however, cumbersome and vulnerable to loss by water and wind. In this experiment, biochar powder, which was pyrolyzed from oak trees, was encapsulated into beads with alginate, which is a naturally occurring polysaccharide found in brown algae. Both batch and pot experiments were conducted to examine the effects of the alginate-encapsulated biochar beads (BB), as compared to its original biochar powdery form (BP), on the Pb adsorption capacity and phytoavailability of soil Pb to lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.). The BB treatment improved reactivity about six times due to a higher surface area (287 m2 g-1) and five times due to a higher cation exchange capacity (50 cmolc kg-1) as compared to the BP treatment. The maximum sorption capacity of Pb was increased to 152 from 81 mg g-1 because of surface chemosorption. Adsorption of Pb onto BB followed multiple first-order kinetics and comprised fast and slow steps. More than 60% of the Pb was adsorbed in the fast step, i.e., within 3 h. Also, the BB treatment, up to the 5% level (w/w), increased soil pH from 5.4 to 6.5 and lowered the phytoavailable fraction of Pb in soil from 5.7 to 0.3 mg kg-1. The Pb concentrations in lettuce cultivated at 5% for the BP and BB treatments were similar but 63 and 66% lower, respectively, than those of the control soil. The results showed that the encapsulation of biochar with alginate enhanced adsorption by the biochar.

Effect of montmorillonite modified straw biochar on transfer behavior of lead and copper in the historical mining areas of dry-hot valleys

Due to the rapid development of human beings, heavy metals are occurred in the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau and Panxi Plateau, the special dry and hot climate areas. Pb and Cu can be quickly transferred through water-plant-animal, further harm to human health by food chain. Therefore, the study of heavy metal treatment is imminent. In this study, Biochar-montmorillonite composites were prepared by co-pyrolysis and characterized, and their ability to remove lead and copper from water-soil process were tracked. And their effectiveness in remediating soil contaminated by lead and copper was documented. The composite material has the rich pore structure, large specific surface area (81.5 m2/g) and a variety of surface functional groups such as C-C, CO, ester-metal and metal-oxygen bonds. Pb and Cu can be effectively adsorbed and fixed to the level of no harm to human health. The adsorption reaction of lead and copper on the Biochar-montmorillonite composites is more suitable to be described by Langmuir adsorption and pseudo-second-order kinetics models. The saturation adsorption capacity of the composite for Pb was measured as 212.5 mg/g. For Cu, it was 136.5 mg/g. The data were fitted by a two-compartment first-order kinetic model. ffast for Pb and Cu is estimated to be 0.81 and 0.78, respective. Fast adsorption is dominant and belongs to typical chemical adsorption, which is consistent with the second-order kinetic results. With 5 % of the composite, approximately 80 % of exchangeable heavy metals in those soils collected from the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau and Panxi Plateau were reduced. The biochar-montmorillonite composites made Pb and Cu change to stable residual state, up to 35 %. Besides, it effectively restored the activity of urease and sucrase in soils. Results indicated that biochar-montmorillonite composites can be effectively used as an environment-friendly adsorbent or passivator to purify heavy metals in soils.

Pine needles as bioindicator and biomagnetic indicator of selected metals in the street dust, a case study from southeastern Iran

Among the different approaches currently being used to evaluate the contamination level of street dust, the magnetic susceptibility of dust and urban tree leaves has received little attention. The key objectives of this study were: (i) to investigate the feasibility of using pine needles as a bioindicator and biomagnetic indicator for estimating the concentration of selected metals in street dust, and (ii) to predict the contamination level of street dust by selected metals using magnetic susceptibility. Street dust and pine tree needle samples were taken from 60 locations in three adjacent cities in Kerman province (Kerman, Rafsanjan, and Sirjan), southeastern Iran. The total concentrations of selected metals, including Cu, Zn, Fe, Mn, Ni, and Pb, and the magnetic susceptibility (χlf and χhf) values of both pine tree needles and street dust samples were determined. Among the three cities studied, samples from Kerman showed the highest magnetic susceptibility and metal concentration values. This could be attributed to the larger size and much higher population density of this city, with more industrial activities and urban traffic than the other two cities investigated. The results also showed that the concentrations of metals in pine needles were strongly correlated (p < 0.01) with those in street dust. The magnetic susceptibility of pine needles and the concentrations of Fe, Pb, Zn, Cu, Ni, and Mn in street dust showed a statistically significant correlation (p < 0.01). A strong and statistically significant correlation (p < 0.01) was also found between magnetic susceptibility and the concentration of metals in pine needles. In conclusion, strong relationships between magnetic properties and metal concentrations of pine needles with those of street dust samples seem to make pine needles a good bioindicator and biomagnetic estimator of the contamination level of metals in street dust.

Inverse vulcanization induced oxygen modified porous polysulfides for efficient sorption of heavy metals

The applications of polysulfides derived from natural plant oil and sulfur via the inverse vulcanization in the removal of heavy metals from aqueous solutions suffered from their low porosity and scarce surface functionality because of their hydrophobic surfaces and bulk characteristics. In this study, polysulfides from sulfur and palm oil (PSPs) with significantly enhanced porosity (13.7-24.1 m2/g) and surface oxygen-containing functional groups (6.9-8.6 wt.%) were synthesized with the optimization of process conditions including reaction time, temperature, and mass ratios of sulfur/palm oil/NaCl/sodium citrate. PSPs were applied as sorbents to remove heavy metals present in aqueous solutions. The integration of porosity and oxygen modification allowed a fast kinetic (4.0 h) and enhanced maximum sorption capacities for Pb(II) (218.5 mg/g), Cu(II) (74.8 mg/g), and Cr(III) (68.4 mg/g) at pH 5.0 and T 298 K comparing with polysulfides made without NaCl/sodium citrate. The sorption behaviors of Pb(II), Cu(II), and Cr(III) on PSPs were highly dependent on the solution pH values and ionic strength. The sorption presented excellent anti-interference capability for the coexisting cations and anions. The sorption processes were endothermic and spontaneous. This work would guide the preparation of porous polysulfides with surface modification as efficient sorbents to remediate heavy metals from aqueous solutions.

Associations Between Individual and Combined Metal Exposures in Whole Blood and Kidney Function in U.S. Adults Aged 40 Years and Older

The effects of metal exposure on kidney function have been reported in previous literature. There is limited and inconsistent information on the associations between individual and combined exposures to metals and kidney function among the middle-aged and older population. The aim of this study was to clarify the associations of exposure to individual metals with kidney function while accounting for potential coexposure to metal mixtures and to evaluate the joint and interactive associations of blood metals with kidney function. A total of 1669 adults aged 40 years and older were enrolled in the present cross-sectional study using the 2015-2016 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Single-metal and multimetal multivariable logistic regression models, quantile G-computation, and Bayesian kernel machine regression models (BKMR) were fitted to explore the individual and joint associations of whole blood metals [lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), cobalt (Co), manganese (Mn), and selenium (Se)] with the odds of decreased estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and albuminuria. A decreased eGFR was defined as an eGFR ≤ 60 mL/min per 1.73 m2, and albuminuria was categorized as a urinary albumin-creatinine ratio (UACR) of ≥ 30.0 mg/g. The results from quantile G-computation and BKMR indicated positive associations between exposure to the metal mixture and the prevalence of decreased eGFR and albuminuria (all P values < 0.05). These positive associations were mainly driven by blood Co, Cd, and Pb. Furthermore, blood Mn was identified as an influential element contributing to an inverse correlation with kidney dysfunction within metal mixtures. Increasing blood Se levels were negatively associated with the prevalence of decreased eGFR and positively associated with albuminuria. In addition, a potential pairwise interaction between Mn-Co on decreased eGFR was identified by BKMR analysis. Findings from our study suggested a positive association between exposure to the whole blood metal mixture and decreased kidney function, with blood Co, Pb, and Cd being the main contributors to this association, while Mn demonstrated an inverse relationship with renal dysfunction. However, as our study was cross-sectional in nature, further prospective studies are warranted to better understand the individual and combined effects of metals on kidney function.

Assessment of heavy metals in rainfall as an indicator of air pollution from Erbil Steel Factory in Iraq

The goal of the current study is to evaluate the heavy metal rainfall contamination in the vicinity brought on by the Erbil Steel Factory in Iraq during the study period. The study's findings revealed the concentration of all studied heavy metals in the precipitation near and around the factory is significantly higher than that of the rural area of Barzan village which is used as a control site. The average concentration of the metals is in descending order manganese (Mn) > lead (Pb) > iron (Fe) > arsenic (As) > cobalt (Co) > selenium (Se) > mercury (Hg) > and cadmium (Cd) for the polluted site. The geo-accumulation index (I-geo) of the heavy metal Mn in the rainfall around the steel factory site is 6.28 > 5 which indicates extreme contamination. While the Igeo values of Cd, As, and Fe are 4.87, 4.54, and 4.04 > 4 that indicate heavy to extreme contamination, for Pb, 3.80 > 3 indicates moderate to heavy contamination, Cd 1.68 > 1 indicates moderate contamination, Hg 0.46 > 0 indicates uncontaminated to moderate contamination, and Se - 0.36 < 0 indicates uncontaminated. The pollution load index (PLI) of the rainwater around the steel factory site is 13.46 > 1, demonstrating that the area is highly metal-contaminated.

Evaluation of the Effects of Wastewater Irrigation on Heavy Metal Accumulation in Vegetables and Human Health in the Cauliflower Example : Heavy Metal Accumulation in Cauliflower

The goals of the present research were to determine the heavy metal contents in the water-soil-cauliflower samples in industrial wastewater irrigated areas and to assess the health risks of these metals to the people. Metal analyses were carried out using the atomic absorption spectrophotometer equipped with a graphite furnace. The metal readings in the cauliflower specimens ranged from 1.153 to 1.389, 0.037 to 0.095, 0.61 to 0.892, 0.625 to 0.921, 1.165 to 2.399, 0.561 to 0.652, 0.565 to 0.585, 0.159 to 0.218 and 1.268 to 1.816 mg/kg for Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ni, Pb, Zn and Mn, respectively. Statistics revealed that, with the exception of Pb and Co (p > 0.05), there was no statistically significant variation in the metal concentrations in the cauliflower samples according to the irrigation type. Pb, Ni, and Cr had HRI values below 1.0 and did not seem to be a hazard to human health, in contrast to Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ni, Pb, Zn and Mn, which glanced to constitute a health risk. Regular monitoring of vegetables irrigated with wastewater is strongly advised to reduce health hazards to people.

Effects of three plant growth-promoting bacterial symbiosis with ryegrass for remediation of Cd, Pb, and Zn soil in a mining area

The quality of soil containing heavy metals (HMs) around nonferrous metal mining areas is often not favorable for plant growth. Three types of plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR)-assisted ryegrass were examined here to treat Cd, Pb, and Zn contaminated soil collected from a nonferrous metal smelting facility. The effects of PGPR-assisted plants on soil quality, plant growth, and the migration and transformation of HMs were evaluated. Results showed that inter-root inoculation of PGPR to ryegrass increased soil redox potential, urease, sucrase and acid phosphatase activities, microbial calorimetry, and bioavailable P, Si, and K content. Inoculation with PGPR also increased aboveground parts and root length, P, Si, and K contents, and antioxidant enzyme activities. The most significant effect was that the simultaneous inoculation of all three PGPRs increased the ryegrass extraction (%) of Cd (59.04-79.02), Pb (105.56-157.13), and Zn (27.71-40.79), compared to CK control (without fungi). Correspondingly, the inter-root soil contents (%) of total Cd (39.94-57.52), Pb (37.59-42.17), and Zn (34.05-37.28) were decreased compared to the CK1 control (without fungi and plants), whereas their bioavailability was increased. Results suggest that PGPR can improve soil quality in mining areas, promote plant growth, transform the fraction of HMs in soil, and increase the extraction of Cd, Pb, and Zn by ryegrass. PGPR is a promising microbe-assisted phytoremediation strategy that can promote the re-greening of vegetation in the mining area while remediating HMs pollution.

Mixed trends in heavy metal-enriched fugitive dust on National Park Service lands along the Red Dog Mine haul road, Alaska, 2006-2017

This study presents the status and trends of long-term monitoring of the elemental concentrations of zinc (Zn), lead (Pb), and cadmium (Cd) in Hylocomium splendens moss tissue in Cape Krusenstern National Monument (CAKR), Alaska, adjacent to the Red Dog Mine haul road. Spatial patterns of the deposition of these metals were re-assessed for the period from 2006-2017 following an identical study that assessed trends between 2001-2006. In contrast to the widespread and steep declines in Zn and Pb levels throughout most of the study area between 2001-2006, this study showed more mixed results for 2006-2017. At distances within 100 m of the haul road, only Pb decreased between 2006-2017. At distances between 100-5,000 m, however, both Zn and Cd decreased between 2006-2017, with high probabilities of decrease and percent decreases of 11-20% and 46-52% respectively. Lead did not decrease in any of the more distant areas. Following earlier work on lichen species richness in the study area, it appears that 2017 Zn levels are approaching those associated with "background" lichen species richness throughout a relatively large proportion of the study area at least 2,000 m from the haul road and several km from the port site. The findings in this study may be used to plan additional mitigation measures to reduce Zn deposition related to impacts on lichen communities.

Assessment of heavy metals accumulation by vegetables irrigated with different stages of textile wastewater for evaluation of food and health risk

Wastewater irrigation for vegetable cultivation is greatly concerned about the presence of toxic metals in irrigated soil and vegetables which causes possible threats to human health. This study aimed to ascertain the accumulation of heavy metals (HMs) in edible parts of vegetables irrigated with different stages of textile dyeing wastewater (TDW). Bio-concentration factor (BCF), Estimated daily intake (EDI), and target hazard quotient (THQ) were computed to estimate human health risks and speculate the hazard index (HI) of adults and children with the consumption of HMs contaminated vegetables at recommended doses. Five vegetables (red amaranth, Indian spinach, cauliflower, tomato, and radish) in a pot experiment were irrigated with groundwater (T1) and seven stages of TDW (T2∼T8) following a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. Among the TDW stages, T8, T7, T4, and T5 exhibited elevated BCF, EDI, THQ, and HI due to a rising trend in the accumulation of Pb, Cd, Cr, and Ni heavy metals in the edible portion of the red amaranth, followed by radish, Indian spinach, cauliflower, and tomato. The general patterns of heavy metal (HM) accumulation, regarded as vital nutrients for plants, were detected in the following sequence: Zn > Mn/Cu > Fe. Conversely, toxic metals were found to be Cd/Cr > Ni > Pb, regardless of the type of vegetables. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) identified T8, T7, and T4 of TDW as the primary contributors to the accumulation of heavy metals in the vegetables examined. Furthermore, the analysis of the heavy metals revealed that the BCF, THQ, and HI values for all studied metals were below 1, except for Pb. This suggests that the present consumption rates of different leafy and non-leafy vegetables, whether consumed individually or together, provide a low risk in terms of heavy metal exposure. Nevertheless, the consumption of T8, T7, and T4 irrigated vegetables, specifically Indian spinach alone or in combination with red amaranth and radish, by both adults and children, at the recommended rate, was found to pose potential health risks. On the other hand, T2, T3, and T6 irrigated vegetables were deemed safe for consumption. These findings indicated that the practice of irrigating the vegetables with T8, T7, and T4 stages of TDW has resulted in a significant buildup of heavy metals in the soils and edible parts of vegetables which are posing health risks to adults and children. Hence, it is imperative to discharge the T8, T7, and T4 stages of TDW after ETP to prevent the contamination of vegetables and mitigate potential health risks.

Combined use of biochar and phosphate rocks on phosphorus and heavy metal availability: A meta-analysis

Biochar (BC) and phosphate rocks (PR) are alternative nutrient sources with multiple benefits for sustainable agriculture. The combination of these soil amendments serves two main purposes: to increase soil phosphorus (P) availability and to remediate heavy metal (HM) contamination. However, a further demonstration of the benefits and risks associated with the combined use of BC and PR (BC + PR) is needed, considering the specific characteristics of raw materials, soil types, experimental conditions, and climatic contexts. This meta-analysis is based on data from 28 selected studies, including 581 paired combinations evaluating effects on extraction and fractionation of cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb), and 290 paired combinations for soil labile and non-labile P. The results reveal that BC, PR, and BC + PR significantly increase soil labile and non-labile P, with BC + PR showing a 150% greater increase compared to BC alone. In tropical regions, substantial increases in P levels were observed with BC, PR, and BC + PR exhibiting increments of 317, 798, and 288%, respectively. In contrast, temperate climate conditions showed lower increases, with BC, PR, and BC + PR indicating 54, 123, and 88% rises in soil P levels. Moreover, BC, PR, and BC + PR effectively reduce the bioavailability of Cd and Pb in soil, with BC + PR demonstrating the highest efficacy in immobilizing Cd. The synergistic effect of BC + PR highlights their potential for Cd remediation. BC + PR effectively reduces the exchangeable fraction of Cd and Pb in soil, leading to their immobilization in more stable forms, such as the residual fraction. This study provides valuable insights into the remediation potential and P management benefits of BC and PR, highlighting their importance for sustainable agriculture and soil remediation practices.

Influence of biochar addition and plant management (cutting and time) on ryegrass growth and migration of As and Pb during phytostabilization

Phytostabilization of metal-contaminated soils can be enabled or improved by biochar application. However, biochar-aided effects vary on biochar types, and little attention has been paid to plant management (time and cutting) to enhance phytostabilization efficiency in synergy with biochar. Therefore, biochars derived from pig manure (PM), Japanese knotweed (JK), and a mixture of both (P1J1) were applied to Pb and As mining soil with ryegrass cultivation to assess the biochar-induced effects on plant growth, dissolved organic matter (DOM), As and Pb mobility, and bioaccumulation within a phytostabilization strategy. Additional treatments involving the combined biochar (P1J1) and ryegrass were conducted to explore the influence of sequential cutting and growing time on facilitating phytostabilization efficacy. Biochar applications promoted plant growth, progressively increasing over time, but were not enhanced by cutting. Short and long-wavelength humic-like DOM substances identified in the soil pore water after biochar application varied depending on the biochar types used, providing evidence for the correlation among DOM changes, biochar origin, and metal immobilization. Biochar-treated soils exhibited reduced Pb availability and enhanced As mobility, with P1J1 stabilizing Pb significantly similar to PM while causing less As mobilization as JK did. The mobilized As did not result in increased plant As uptake; instead, all biochar-added plants showed a significant decrease in As and Pb concentrations compared to those without biochar. Soil available As decreased while available Pb increased with time, and cutting did not influence soil As behavior but did reduce soil Pb release. Nevertheless, plant As and Pb concentrations decreased over time, whereas those in multiple-cut plants were generally higher than those without cuts. Biochar, especially P1J1, along with growth time, holds promise in promoting plant biomass, reducing plant Pb and As concentrations, and minimizing the migration of PbAs within the soil.

Foliar application of plant growth regulators for enhancing heavy metal phytoextraction efficiency by Sedum alfredii Hance in contaminated soils: Lab to field experiments

The phytoremediation efficiency of plants in removing the heavy metals (HMs) might be influenced by their growth status and accumulation capacity of plants. Herein, we conducted a lab-scale experiment and a field try out to assess the optimal plant growth regulators (PGRs) including indole-3-acetic acid (IAA)/brassinolide (BR)/abscisic acid (ABA) in improving the phytoextraction potential of Sedum alfredii Hance (S. alfredii). The results of pot experiment revealed that application of IAA at 0.2 mg/L, BR at 0.4 mg/L, and ABA at 0.2 mg/L demonstrated notable potential as optimal dosage for Cd/Pb/Zn phytoextraction in S. alfredii. The findings of subcellular level of Cd/Pb/Zn in leaves showed that IAA (0.2 mg/L), BR (0.4 mg/L) or ABA (0.2 mg/L) promoted the HMs storage in the soluble and cell wall fraction, therefore contributing HMs subcellular compartmentation. In addition, application of PGRs notably enhanced the antioxidant system (SOD, CAT, POD, APX activities) while reducing lipid peroxidation (MDA content) in S. alfredii, consequently improving HMs tolerance and growth of S. alfredii. Moreover, the results of field trial showed that application of BR, IAA, or ABA+BR substantially improved the growth of S. alfredii by inducing plants biomass and augmenting the levels of photosynthetic pigment contents. Notably, ABA+BR noticed the highest theoretical biomass by 42.9 %, followed by IAA (41.6 %), and BR (36.4 %), as compared with CK. Additionally, ABA+BR treatment showed effectiveness in removing the Cd by 103.4 %, while BR and IAA led to a significant increase of Pb and Zn removal by 239 % and 116 %, respectively, when compared with CK. Overall, the results of this study highlights that the foliar application of IAA, BR, or ABA+BR can serve as viable strategy to boosting phytoremediation efficiency of S. alfredii in contaminated soil by improving the biomass and metal accumulation in harvestable parts.

Assessment of heavy metals and environmental stress conditions on the production potential of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in indigenous microalgae isolated from the Gulf of Mannar coastal waters

The present study evaluated the effects of heavy metals, viz., lead, mercury, and cadmium, on growth, chlorophyll a, b, c, carotenoids, and PUFA content of marine microalgae Chlorella sp. and Cylindrotheca fusiformis. At 96-h exposure, the IC50 values for Hg2+, Pb2+, and Cd2+ were 0.85 mg/L, 2.4 mg/L, and 5.3 mg/L respectively, in Chlorella sp. In C. fusiformis, IC50 values for Hg2+, Pb2+, and Cd2+ were 0.5 mg/L, 1.2 mg/L, and 3 mg/L respectively. The pigment contents of both microalgae were significantly affected upon heavy metal exposure. In Chlorella sp. and C. fusiformis, the exposed concentrations of Hg2+ averagely decreased the PUFA content by 76.34% and 78.68%, respectively. Similarly, Pb2+-exposed concentrations resulted in 54.50% and 82.64% average reductions in PUFA content of Chlorella sp. and C. fusiformis, respectively. Cd2+-exposed concentrations showed 32.58% and 40.54% average reduction in PUFA content of Chlorella sp. and C. fusiformis, respectively. Among the environmental stress conditions, the dark treatment has increased total PUFA content by 6.63% in Chlorella sp. and 3.92% in C. fusiformis. It was observed that the 50% nitrogen starvation (two-stage) significantly improved the PUFA production from 26.47 ± 6.55% to 40.92 ± 10.74% in Chlorella sp. and from 11.23 ± 5.01 to 32.8 ± 14.17% in C. fusiformis. The toxicity for both microalgae was followed in the order Hg2+ > Pb2+ > Cd2+. Among the two species, Chlorella sp. has shown a high tolerance to heavy metals and can be effectively utilized in PUFA production.

Lead remediation by geological fluorapatite combined with Penicillium Oxalicum and Red yeast

Phosphate solubilizing fungi Penicillium oxalicum (POX) and Red yeast Rhodotorula mucilaginosa (Rho) have been applied in Pb remediation with the combination of fluorapatite (FAp), respectively. The secretion of oxalic acid by POX and the production of extracellular polymers (EPS) by Rho dominate the Pb remediation. In this study, the potential of Pb remediation by the fungal combined system (POX and Rho) with FAp was investigated. After six days of incubation, the combination of POX and Rho showed the highest Pb remove ratio (99.7%) and the lowest TCLP-Pb concentration (2.9 mg/L). The EPS combined with POX also enhanced Pb remediation, which has a 99.3% Pb removal ratio and 5.5 mg/L TCLP-Pb concentration. Meanwhile, Rho and EPS can also stimulate POX to secrete more oxalic acid, which reached 1510.1 and 1450.6 mg/L in six days, respectively. The secreted oxalic acid can promote FAp dissolution and the formation of lead oxalate and pyromorphite. Meanwhile, the EPS produced by Rho can combine with Pb to form EPS-Pb. In the combined system of POX + Rho and POX + EPS, all of the lead oxalate, pyromorphite, and EPS-Pb were observed. Our findings suggest that the combined application of POX and Rho with FAp is an effective approach for enhancing Pb remediation.

Regional air quality study by assessing trace metal atmospheric deposition

This study addresses the atmospheric deposition of trace elements investigated in Albania, Croatia and Macedonia in 2010 as part of the European Moss Study. This study provides data on the concentration of ten metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, V, Zn, Fe, Al, and Li) in naturally growing mosses. In general, all concentration data follow a lognormal distribution. Cd, Cr, Ni, and Zn show strong fluctuations in the moss samples from Albania and Macedonia, and Pb, Fe, and Al in the mosses from Croatia. The concentrations of Cd, Cu, and Zn were higher in the samples from Croatia than in those from Albania and Macedonia; the concentrations of Cr, Ni, V, Fe, Al, and Li were higher in the samples from Albania than in those from Croatia and Macedonia; and a higher concentration of Pb was found in the samples from Macedonia. The observed relationship between the concentration of lithogenic elements (Al, Fe, and V) and the air quality index (AQI) confirms that moss species have a high capacity to retain atmospheric deposition particles. The anthropogenic emission sources of these elements from local and long-range transport were considered to be the most important factors affecting air quality in the studied areas.

A novel oyster shell biocomposite for the efficient adsorptive removal of cadmium and lead from aqueous solution: Synthesis, process optimization, modelling and mechanism studies

This study highlights the effectiveness of oyster shell biocomposite for the biosorption of Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions from an aqueous solution. The aim of this work was to modify a novel biocomposite derived from oyster shell for the adsorption of Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions from aqueous solution. The studied revealed the specific surface BET surface area was 9.1476 m2/g. The elemental dispersive x-ray analysis (EDS) indicated that C, O, Ag, Ca were the predominant elements on the surface of the biocomposite after which metals ions of Cd and Pb were noticed after adsorption. The Fourier transform Irradiation (FT-IR) revealed the presence of carboxyl and hydroxyl groups on the surface. The effect of process variables on the adsorption capacity of the modified biocomposite was examined using the central composite design (CCD) of the response surface methodology (RSM). The process variables which include pH, adsorbent dose, the initial concentration and temperature were the most effective parameters influencing the uptake capacity. The optimal process conditions of these parameters were found to be pH, 5.57, adsorbent dose, 2.53 g/L, initial concentration, 46.76 mg/L and temperature 28.48°C for the biosorption of Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions from aqueous solution at a desirability coefficient of 1. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed a high coefficient of determination (R2 > 0.91) and low probability coefficients for the responses (P < 0.05) which indicated the validity and aptness of the model for the biosorption of the metal ions. Experimental isotherm data fitted better to the Langmuir model and the kinetic data fitted better to the pseudo-second-order model. Maximun Cd(II) and Pb(II) adsorption capacities of the oyster shell biocomposite were 97.54 and 78.99 mg/g respectively and was obtained at pH 5.56 and 28.48°C. This investigation has provided the possibility of the utilization of alternative biocomposite as a sustainable approach for the biosorption of heavy metal ions from the wastewater stream.

Competition of Cd(II) and Pb(II) on the bacterial cells: a new insight from bioaccumulation based on NanoSIMS imaging

Polymetallic exposure causes complex toxicity to microorganisms. In this study, we investigated the responses of Escherichia coli under co-existence of cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb), primarily based on biochemical analysis and RNA sequencing. Cd completely inhibited bacterial growth at a concentration of 2.41 mmol/L, with its removal rate as low as <10%. In contrast, the Pb removal rate was >95% under equimolar sole Pb stress. In addition, the Raman analysis confirmed the loss of proteins for the bacterial cells. Under the co-existence of Cd and Pb, the Cd toxicity to E. coli was alleviated. Meanwhile, the biosorption of Pb cations was more intense during the competitive sorption with Cd. Transmission electron microscopy images showed that a few cells were elongated during incubation, i.e., the average cellular length increased from 1.535 ± 0.407 to 1.845 ± 0.620 µm. Moreover, NanoSIMS imaging showed that the intracellular distribution of Cd and Pb was coupled with sulfur. Genes regulating sulfate transporter were also upregulated to promote sulfate assimilation. Then, the subsequent production of biogenic sulfide and sulfur-containing amino acids was enhanced. Although this strategy based on S enrichment could resist the polymetallic stress, not all related genes were induced to upregulate under sole Cd stress. Therefore, the S metabolism might remodel the microbial resistance to variable occurrence of heavy metals. Furthermore, the competitive sorption (in contrast to sole Cd stress) could prevent microbial cells from strong Cd toxicity.IMPORTANCEMicrobial tolerance and resistance to heavy metals have been widely studied under stress of single metals. However, the polymetallic exposure seems to prevail in the environment. Though microbial resistance can alleviate the effects of exogenous stress, the taxonomic or functional response to polymetallic exposure is still not fully understood. We determined the strong cytotoxicity of cadmium (Cd) on growth, and cell elongation would be driven by Cd stress. The addition of appropriate lead (Pb) showed a stimulating effect on microbial bioactivity. Meanwhile, the biosorption of Pb was more intense during co-existence of Pb and Cd. Our work also revealed the spatial coupling of intracellular S and Cd/Pb. In particular, the S assimilation was promoted by Pb stress. This work elucidated the microbial responses to polymetallic exposure and may provide new insights into the antagonistic function during metal stresses.

Innovative accumulative risk assessment of co-exposure to Cd, As, and Pb in contaminated rice based on their in vivo bioavailability and in vitro bioaccessibility

The consumption of cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), and lead (Pb) co-contaminated rice exposes humans to multiple heavy metals simultaneously, with relative bioavailability (RBA) and bioaccessibility (BAc) being important determinants of potential health risks. This study evaluated the relationship between in vivo RBA and in vitro BAc of Cd, As, and Pb in rice and their cumulative risk to humans. A total of 110 rice samples were collected in Zhejiang Province, China, and 10 subsamples with varying concentration gradients were randomly selected to measure RBA using a mouse model (liver, kidney, femur, blood, and urine as endpoints) and BAc using four in vitro assays (PBET, UBM, SBRC, and IVG). Our results indicated that Cd-RBA varied from 21.2 % to 67.5 %, As-RBA varied from 23.2 % to 69.3 %, and Pb-RBA varied from 22.2 % to 68.9 % based on mouse liver plus kidneys. The BAc values for Cd, As, and Pb in rice varied according to the assay. Compared to Cd and As, Pb exhibited a lower BAc in the gastric (GP) and intestinal (IP) phases. According to the relationship between the BAc and RBA values, IVG-GP (R2 = 0.92), SBRC-IP (R2 = 0.73), and UBM-GP (R2 = 0.80) could be used as predictors of Cd-, As-, and Pb-RBA in rice, respectively. The health risks associated with co-exposure to Cd, As, and Pb in contaminated rice for both adults and children exceeded the acceptable threshold, with Cd and As being the primary risk factors. The noncarcinogenic and carcinogenic risks were markedly reduced when the RBA and BAc values were incorporated into the risk assessment. Due to the risk overestimation inherent in estimating the risk level based on total metal concentration, our study provides a realistic assessment of the cumulative health risks associated with co-exposure to Cd, As, and Pb in contaminated rice using in vivo RBA and in vitro BAc bioassays.

Three-year field experiments revealed the immobilization effect of natural aging biochar on typical heavy metals (Pb, Cu, Cd)

Biochar has been widely used for the remediation of heavy metal contaminated soil, while the long-term field aging on its properties and the performance in the ability of metal immobilization must not be overlooked. In this study, the stability of immobilized heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Pb) on biochar during a 3-year remediation for soil in the field was investigated through desorption experiments. The results indicated that the application of biochar and its aging in the field both remarkably increased the immobilization of the 3 metal ions in the field under 3-year remediation. The cumulative desorption of the 3 metals decreased with biochar aging, and the desorption rate of Pb2+, Cu2+ and Cd2+ in T3 (Application of 30 t·hm-2 of biochar) for the third year was 0.08 %, 0.20 % and 13.15 %. Meanwhile, both the desorption rates and extents exhibited significant difference with the order of Pb2+ < Cu2+ < Cd2+. The increased soil pH, the enhancement of O/C ratio (Increase from 0.30 for fresh BC to 0.61 for aged BC(S3)) and oxygen-containing functional groups in biochar, and the accretion of organo-mineral micro-agglomerates on biochar surfaces and in pores during field aging process jointly contributed the immobilization of metals in soils mainly through co-precipitation and complexation. Our results provide new insights into the practical application of biochar in soils contaminated with multiple heavy metals from the perspective of long-term effects, which suggests that the potential release risk of metals become slighter over time.

Critical evaluation of the performance of rhamnolipids as surfactants for (phyto)extraction of Cd, Cu, Fe, Pb and Zn from copper smelter-affected soil

Rhamnolipids are biosurfactants produced by bacteria belonging to the Pseudomonas genus. They are discussed to complex heavy metal cations stronger than cations of Fe, Ca, Mg. It is therefore suggested to employ rhamnolipids in phytoextraction where their addition to soil should result in preferential complexation of heavy metals that can be taken up by plants, thus enabling rapid and ecological clean-up of contaminated soil. In order to test this concept, we evaluated the rhamnolipid-mediated phytoextraction of heavy metal from soil collected from the vicinity of a copper smelter. The following aspects were investigated: i) selectivity of rhamnolipids towards Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd and Fe during soil washing; ii) phytoextraction efficiency of each ion with respect to the effective concentration of rhamnolipids; iii) possible phytotoxic effects; iv) effect of micro-sized polystyrene amendment. The experiments evaluated soil washing efficiency, BCR (Community Bureau of Reference) sequential extraction to determine the impact of rhamnolipids on the mobility of metal ions, phytoextraction with maize (Zea mays L.) and phytotoxic effects based on dry matter, chlorophyll fluorescence and content. The obtained results indicated that rhamnolipids lack desired selectivity towards heavy metal ions as Fe was complexed more efficiently by 80 % of the available rhamnolipids compared to priority pollutants like Zn, Cu, Pb, which were complexed by only 20 % of the tested rhamnolipids. With increased concentration of rhamnolipids, the soil washing efficiency increased and shifted in favour of Fe, reaching values of approx. 469 mg for Fe and only 118 mg in total of all tested heavy metals. Phytoextraction also favoured the accumulation of Fe, while Cd was not removed from the soil even at the highest applied rhamnolipid concentrations. Considering the selectivity of rhamnolipids and the costs associated with their production, our results suggest the need to search for other alternative (bio)surfactants with better selectivity and lower price.

Road dust exposure and human corneal damage in a plateau high geological background provincial capital city: Spatial distribution, sources, bioaccessibility, and cytotoxicity of dust heavy metals

Ocular surface diseases are common in the plateau city, Kunming China, the continued daily exposure to heavy metals in dust may be an important inducement. In this study, the 150 road dust samples from five functional areas in Kunming were collected. The concentrations, distribution, possible sources, and bioaccessibility of heavy metals were analyzed. The adverse effects of dust extracts on human corneal epithelial cells and the underlying mechanisms were also assessed. The concentrations (mg·kg-1) of As (19.1), Cd (2.67), Cr (90.5), Cu (123), Pb (78.4), and Zn (389) in road dust were higher than the soil background, with commercial and residential areas showing the highest pollution. Their bioaccessibility in artificial tears was As (6.59 %) > Cu (5.11 %) > Ni (1.47 %) > Cr (1.17 %) > Mn (0.84 %) > Cd (0.76 %) > Zn (0.50 %) > Pb (0.31 %). The two main sources of heavy metals included tire and mechanical abrasion (24.5 %) and traffic exhaust (21.6 %). All dust extracts induced cytotoxicity, evidenced by stronger inhibition of cell viability, higher production of ROS, and altered mRNA expression of antioxidant enzymes and cell cycle-related genes, with commercial- areas-2 (CA2)-dust extract showing the greatest oxidative damage and cell cycle arrest. Our data may provide new evidence that dust exposure in high geological background cities could trigger human cornea damage.

Associations of maternal exposure to multiple plasma trace elements with the prevalence of fetal congenital heart defects: A nested case-control study

BACKGROUND

Scanty knowledge prevails regarding the combined impact of multiple plasma trace elements and main contributors on the prevalence of congenital heart defects (CHDs) in offspring. Thus, we performed a nested case-control analysis in a neonates cohort to investigate this important public health issue.

METHODS

We selected 164 pairs of cases and non-malformed controls from live births registered in the parent cohort (n = 11,578) at the same hospital. Plasma levels of 14 trace elements were determined by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. The odds ratios (ORs) of exposure were compared between cases and controls. Bayesian Kernel Machine Regression (BKMR) and Quantile g-Computation (QgC) models were employed to assess the cumulative effect of exposure to trace elements.

RESULTS

We found positive associations and linear dose-response relationships between plasma Pb and Sn and CHD. BKMR models indicated that the overall effect of the trace element mixture was associated with CHDs below the 45th percentile or above the 50th percentile, and the combined effect was primarily attributed to Sn and Pb. The QgC model indicated significantly increased odds of CHD with simultaneous exposure to all studied trace elements (OR: 2.19, 95%CI: 1.44-3.33).

CONCLUSIONS

This study is the first to report an association between elevated levels of mixed trace elements in maternal plasma with an increased prevalence of fetal CHDs, particularly in the case of Pb and Sn. Findings from this study provide further evidence of the important of heavy metal pollution to human health, and can help stakeholders prioritize policies and develop interventions to target the leading contributors to human exposure.

Elevated lead (Pb) in urban European starling (Sturnus vulgaris) feathers is not correlated to physiology or behavior

Urbanization is rapidly changing the environment and creating new challenges in the lives of animals across the globe. Anthropogenic contaminants-like heavy metals-can persist within the environment for prolonged periods of time and present a widespread problem for those living near contaminated areas. Lead (Pb) was a commonly used heavy metal that continues to threaten the health of all organisms despite being phased out, especially in urban areas where historical use was more common. In this study, a common urban-adapter, the European starling (Sturnus vulgaris), was trapped to explore whether feather Pb burden is greater in birds from urban habitats than rural habitats, as well as whether Pb burdens were correlated with behavior, physiology, and feather development. Across four sites (two rural and two urban), soil Pb concentrations were measured and 197 free-living starlings were captured to measure feather Pb concentrations. Using linear mixed models, this study found that urban starling nestlings had elevated feather Pb burdens compared to rural nestlings. In contrast, there was no correlation between Pb and urbanization in adult birds whose exposure to Pb may reflect a larger spatial range compared to nestlings. For both nestlings and adults, feather Pb was uncorrelated to corticosterone, testosterone, aggressive behavior, or feather growth rates. These findings suggest that starlings may be a useful biomonitoring tool to detect Pb in the local environment, however, the age and spatial range of birds is a critical consideration in applying this tool. Further work is needed to understand the intricate relationship between heavy metals, behavior, morphological development, and physiology in free-living organisms.

Unraveling assemblage of microbial community dwelling in Dabaoshan As/Pb/Zn mine-impacted area: A typical mountain mining area of South China

Microbial community assemblage includes microorganisms from the three domains including Bacteria, Archaea, and Eukarya (Fungi), which play a crucial role in geochemical cycles of metal(loid)s in mine tailings. Mine tailings harbor vast proportions of metal(loid)s, representing a unique source of co-contamination of metal(loid)s that threaten the environment. The elucidation of the assembly patterns of microbial communities in mining-impacted ecospheres has received little attention. To decipher the microbial community assembly processes, the microbial communities from the five sites of the Dabaoshan mine-impacted area were profiled by the MiSeq sequencing of 16S rRNA (Bacteria and Archaea) genes and internal transcribed spacers (Fungi). Results indicated that the coexistence of 31 bacterial, 10 fungal, and 3 archaeal phyla, were mainly dominated by Mucilaginibacter, Cladophialophora, and Candidatus Nitrosotalea, respectively. The distribution of microorganisms was controlled by deterministic processes. The combination of Cu, Pb, and Sb was the main factor explaining the structure of microbial communities. Functional predicting analysis of bacteria and archaea based on the phylogenetic investigation of communities by reconstruction of unobserved states analyses revealed that the metabolic pathways related to arsenite transporter, arsenate reductase, and FeS cluster were important for metal detoxification. Furthermore, the ecological guilds (pathogens, symbiotrophs, and saprotrophs) of fungal communities explained 44.5 % of functional prediction. In addition, metal-induced oxidative stress may be alleviated by antioxidant enzymes of fungi communities, such as catalase. Such information provides new insights into the microbial assembly rules in co-contaminated sites.

Health risk assessment and quality reference values of potentially toxic elements in soils of the Southwestern Amazonas State - Brazil

The geochemical processes involved in the Amazon soils formation are not totally understood because its geological and pedological features were formed during different geological events and different times. The Southwestern region of Amazonas State is an example of a region where the soils were developed from rocks formed by sedimentary processes and, nowadays, the soils continue receiving seasonal inputs from the Andes sediments. Data on geochemical patterns of this region are scarce, and there is no information about the possible effects of the natural or unnatural enrichment of potentially toxic elements (PTEs). Thus, this study represents the first research into the geochemical patterns of PTEs in soils of Southwestern Amazonas State. Further, we carried out a human health risk assessment and a proposal for Quality Reference Values (QRV) for thirteen PTEs (As, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Ti, V, Zn and Zr). Our findings showed that the PTEs contents in soil samples collected in the lowland areas are strongly influenced by sediments inputs, while samples localized in the highland areas are weakly influenced by sediments inputs and present depletion of PTEs. Barium, Cr, Cu, Ni and Pb were the PTEs most influenced by sediment's deposition. The soil contamination assessment showed the existence of enrichment of the potentially toxic elements in soil samples, which may be a consequence of the natural inputs of the Andean sediments. Furthermore, Co and Cr exceed the safety zone for carcinogenic risk assessment, which indicates the need to monitor these elements and their possible effects on the health of the population in this region.

Origin traceability of Cordyceps sinensis based on trace elements and stable isotope fingerprints

Cordyceps sinensis is a kind of valuable Chinese herbal medicine, and its quality and price depend on the place of origin. Building a traceability system for Cordyceps sinensis products is an effective way to protect Cordyceps sinensis geographical indication products and consumers. In this study, concentrations of 45 trace elements and stable C, N, and Pb isotopes were used to distinguish Cordyceps sinensis samples from different habitats and different varieties (natural and artificial). The results showed that there were significant differences in the isotope compositions of N and Pb and trace elements contents in the Cordyceps sinensis samples from different sources. Stepwise discriminant analysis was used to select effective traceability indicators, and three discriminant models were successfully established. A combination of Co, Sr, Cu, Tl, and Zr indexes was selected to distinguish the naturally grown samples from the artificially cultivated ones, with an overall cross-validation correctness rate of 90.0 %; while a combination of As, Cu, Rb, Tl, W, and Zr indexes was adopted to distinguish the naturally grown samples from different regions, with a corresponding 100.0 % overall cross-validation correctness rate. To simultaneously distinguish samples between natural and artificial and between different regions, a combination of As, Cu, Rb, Tl, U, W, and δ15N indexes was employed, with an overall cross-validation correctness rate of 89.3 %.

Association between Mediterranean diet and metal mixtures concentrations in pregnant people from the New Hampshire Birth Cohort Study

Diet is a primary source of nutrients but also toxic metal exposure. In pregnancy, balancing essential metal exposure while reducing non-essential ones is vital for fetal and maternal health. However, the effect of metal mixtures from diets like the Mediterranean, known for health benefits, remains unclear. This study aimed to explore the association between Mediterranean diet adherence and metals exposure, both individually and as mixtures. The study involved 907 pregnant participants from the New Hampshire Birth Cohort Study. We calculated the relative Mediterranean diet score (rMED) through a validated food frequency questionnaire, which includes 8 traditional Mediterranean dietary components. Also, at ~24-28 weeks of gestation, we used ICP-MS to measure speciation of Al, Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mo, Ni, Sb, Se, Sn, Zn, and As in urine, as well as Pb, Hg, As, Ni, and Se in toenails. We used multiple linear regression and Weighted Quantile Sum regression to analyze the association between rMED and metal mixtures. The models were adjusted for age, pre-pregnancy BMI, smoking during pregnancy, and educational level. High adherence to the Mediterranean diet was associated with increased urinary Al (® = 0.26 (95 % confidence interval (CI) = 0.05; 0.46)), Cd (β = 0.12 (95%CI = 0.00; 0.24)), Mo (β = 0.10 (95%CI = 0.00; 0.20)), and AsB (β = 0.88 (95%CI = 0.49; 1.27)) as well as toenail Hg (β = 0.44 (95%CI = 0.22; 0.65)), Ni (β = 0.37 (95%CI = 0.06; 0.67)), and Pb (β = 0.22 (95%CI = 0.03; 0.40)) compared to those with low adherence. The intake of fruits and nuts, fish and seafood, legumes, cereals, meat, and olive oil were found to be related to the metal biomarkers within the rMED. In conclusion, the Mediterranean diet enhances essential metal intake but may also increase exposure to harmful ones.

Studies on the Aptasensor Miniaturization for Electrochemical Detection of Lead Ions

Lead poses severe effects on living organisms, and since Pb2+ ions tend to accumulate in different organs, it is crucial to monitor Pb2+ concentration in samples such as water and soil. One of the approaches is the utilization of biosensors combined with aptamer-based layers for the electrochemical detection of lead ions. Herein, we present the studies of applying miniaturized screen-printed transducers as solid surfaces to fabricate aptamer layers. As the research is the direct continuation of our previous studies regarding the use of gold disk electrodes, the working parameters of elaborated aptasensors were defined, including the range of linear response (10-100 nM), selectivity as well as stability, regeneration, and feasibility of application for the analysis of real samples. This was achieved using voltammetric techniques including cyclic and square-wave voltammetry in the presence of methylene blue redox indicator.

Screening of heavy metal-resistant rhizobial and non-rhizobial microflora isolated from Trifolium sp. growing in mining areas

Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) can promote plant growth and development with several beneficial effects, especially in challenging environmental conditions, such as the presence of toxic contaminants. In this study, 49 isolates obtained from Trifolium sp. nodules growing on a Pb/Zn mine site were characterized for PGP traits including siderophores production, phosphate solubilization, extracellular enzymes production, and antifungal activity. The isolates were also screened for their ability to grow at increasing concentrations of NaCl and heavy metals, including lead, zinc, cobalt, copper, nickel, cadmium, and chromium. The findings of our study indicated that isolates Cupriavidus paucula RSCup01-RSCup08, Providencia rettgeri RSPro01, Pseudomonas putida RSPs01, Pseudomonas thivervalensis RSPs03-RSPs09, and Acinetobacter beijerinckii RSAci01 showed several key traits crucial for promoting plant growth, thus demonstrating the greatest potential. Most isolates displayed resistance to salt and heavy metals. Notably, Staphylococcus xylosus RSSta01, Pseudomonas sp. RSPs02, Micrococcus yunnanensis RSMicc01, and Kocuria dechangensis RSKoc01 demonstrated a significant capacity to grow at salt concentrations ranging from 10 to 20%, and isolates including Cupravidus paucula RSCup01-RSCup08 exhibited resistance to high levels of heavy metals, up to 1300 mg/L Pb++, 1200 mg/L Zn++, 1000 mg/L Ni++, 1000 mg/L Cd++, 500 mg/L Cu++, 400 mg/L Co++, and 50 mg/L CrVI+. Additionally, the analysis revealed that metal-resistant genes pbrA, czcD, and nccA were exclusively detected in the Cupriavidus paucula RSCup01 strain. The results of this study provide insights into the potential of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria strains that might be used as inoculants to improve phytoremediation in heavy metal-contaminated soils.

Spatial distribution of Pb and Zn in soils under native vegetation in Southeast Brazil

Heavy metals can play an important biological role as micronutrients but also as potentially toxic elements (PTEs). Understanding the natural concentrations of PTEs-Pb and Zn included-in soils allows for the identification and monitoring of contaminated areas and their role in environmental risk assessment. In this study, we aim to determine semi-total or natural and available concentrations of Pb and Zn in topsoils (0-20 cm depth) from 337 samples under native vegetation in the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Additionally, we sought to interpret the spatial geochemical variability using geostatistical techniques and quality reference values for these elements in soils were established. The semi-total concentrations were determined by flame and graphite furnace atomic absorption after microwave-assisted nitric acid digestion method. The available concentrations were extracted using the Mehlich-I extractor and determined by atomic absorption spectrometer. Spatial variability was modeled using semivariance estimators: Matheron's classic, Cressie and Hawkins' robust, and Cressie median estimators, the last two being less sensitive to extreme values. This allowed the construction of digital maps through kriging of semi-total Pb and Zn contents using the median estimator, as well as other soil properties by the robust estimator. The dominance of acidic pH and low CEC values reflects highly weathered low-fertility soils. Semi-total Pb contents ranged from 2.1 to 278 mg kg-1 (median: 9.35 mg kg-1) whereas semi-total Zn contents ranged from 2.7 to 495 mg kg-1 (median: 7.7 mg kg-1). The available Pb contents ranged from 0.1 to 6.92 mg kg-1 (median: 0.54 mg kg-1) whereas available Zn contents ranged from 0.1 to 78.2 mg kg-1 (median: 0.32 mg kg-1). The highest Pb and Zn concentrations were observed near Januária, in the northern part of the territory, probably on limestone rocks from the Bambuí group. Finally, the QRVs for Pb and Zn in natural soils were lower than their background values from other Brazilian region and below the prevention values suggested by Brazilian environmental regulations.
