Abstract
Evaluation of the severity of histologic changes associated with cystitis is often subjective and inconsistent from one sample to the next. The objective of this study was to establish a consistent, reproducible method to quantify histologic changes in a mouse model of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced cystitis. Either LPS (n = 8) or pyrogen-free saline (n = 8) was instilled intravesically into the bladders of female C57bk-6 J mice. Twenty-four hours later, mice in these groups as well as eight untreated controls were sacrificed and bladders were removed, fixed in formalin, and stained with hematoxylin and eosin (H&E). A bladder inflammatory index (BII) was described by reviewing tissues for edema, leukocyte infiltration, and hemorrhage. Cross-sections were evaluated by a single pathologist in a blinded manner based on the objective BII described. The BII method for objectively analyzing bladder inflammation was effective and reproducible. Bladders instilled with LPS had significantly increased inflammation scores for edema, leukocyte infiltration, and hemorrhage compared with those instilled with saline or untreated controls (n = 8, P < 0.05). These results demonstrate that LPS causes bladder inflammation when instilled intravesically and that inflammation of mouse bladders can be objectively quantified using the histological method described.

Abstract
Johann Nepomuk Czermak (1828-1873) gained a lasting reputation in the fields of laryngology, rhinology and dentistry. However, his works in the discipline he liked most--neurophysiology--have almost been forgotten. This paper focuses on those articles, which Czermak wrote during his last years in Leipzig (from 1869). Also it was here that he was finally able to fulfill his dream of a "spectatorium", a perfect place for both research and teaching at that time. This institution was the perfect expression of Czermak's uncompromisingly scientific approach, his views in social as well as matters of teaching. It is part of his tragedy though, that Czermak died too early in Leipzig, the place where he could finally realize many of his scientific visions, and that his inheritance was soon forgotten.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To determine the anatomic distribution of select neuropeptides (neurokinin A [NKA], substance P [SP], and bradykinin [BK]), of inflammatory cells (leukocytes and mast cells), and the histamine content in the normal swine ureter and compare the findings with regions of increased ureteral contractility. METHODS Ureters from 10 pigs were obtained and cut into eight segments, proximally to distally. A portion of each ureteral segment was suspended in Krebs buffer (37 degrees C) and attached to force displacement transducers, and spontaneous contractility was measured for 30 minutes. A second portion was assayed for histamine, NKA, SP, and BK using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. A third portion was fixed in 10% buffered formalin, stained with hematoxylin-eosin, and evaluated histologically. RESULTS Ureteral contractility was found to be highest in the most proximal and most distal regions of the ureter. Similarly, SP content was three times greater in the proximal ureter and two times greater in the distal ureter than in the midureter (P <0.05, n = 10). The total NKA and BK content were also higher in the proximal and distal ureter than in the midureter. Conversely, the histamine content was consistent throughout the ureter. Moreover, no significant difference in the distribution of inflammatory cells was identified throughout the ureter. CONCLUSIONS The anatomic distribution of NKA, SP, and BK in the ureter corresponded to regions of increased spontaneous ureteral contractility, more specifically the proximal and distal ureter. Neuropeptides may play a significant role in ureteral contractility and may be a target for pharmacologic mediation during obstruction and stone passage.

Abstract
The aim of this essay is to retell the life and work of philosopher and psychiatrist Gustav Wilhelm Störring (1860-1946) during his early years in Leipzig and Erdmannshain. His "Lectures on Psychopathology and its Impact on Normal Psychology", written 100 years ago, are acknowledged as his most important work. With this book Störring stands in opposition to many of his contemporaries, which is illustrated with his concept of mania. In some aspects, however, his ideas coincide with those of other well-known psychiatrists such as Emil Kraepelin. Both were inclined to the idea that psychiatry and psychology could mutually stimulate each other. Störring's work in Wundt's laboratory of experimental psychology had a major impact on his work. Wundt's ideas gave impetus to a lot of his work and also influenced papers Störring was to write later on. Störring's biography is followed until 1902 when he was appointed professor of philosophy of Zurich University, in which his friend Ernst Meumann was substantially involved. In Leipzig Störring had started his work as Flechsig's assistant at the hospital of psychiatry and neurology of Leipzig University. In 1897 he founded his own sanitarium for mentally and neurologically ill in Erdmannshain, a village near Leipzig, which he managed together with his wife Marie, née Bonacker. With the help of Wundt Störring qualifies as a university lecturer. During the years regarded here, however, he got more and more attracted to philosophical matters, thus turning away from neurosciences. In time he started to regard his work as physician as nothing more than necessary for making his living. His relationship with Wundt, who together with his laboratory of experimental psychology had previously made him wish to come to Leipzig, cooled down, at least on the part of the first. That puts an end to Störring's early years not only from the point of view of his biography but also from his work.

Abstract
For about 10 years, namely from 1882 until 1892/93 Emil Kraepelin worked as a reviewer for the "Literarische Centralblatt für Deutschland", probably the most influential review journal of that time in Germany. In these short essays their author had to state his opinion on many different topics such as anthropology, (experimental) psychology, various aspects of the history of psychiatry as well as its different schools like the so-called "psychiatry of brain" in the most succint way. Also they reveal personal feelings and opinions Kraepelin had about some of his contemporaries. Last but not least they can also demonstrate in which way his attitude towards a particular subject changed over the years. Additionally employing original letters written to the editor of the "Literarische Centralblatt" as well as other primary sources a quite clear picture of the young Kraepelin as man and scientist can be drawn. That is the objective of this paper as well as bringing those nowadays almost forgotten works, which cannot be found in any of the profound bibliographies on Kraepelin, back to the attention of the psychiatrical public.

Abstract
Canine osteochondroma is an uncommon bony tumor that arises in skeletally immature animals. Consequently, clinical signs typically occur in young dogs as a result of impingement of normal structures by the tumor. Radiographically, osteochondromas are benign in appearance. They are well circumscribed and cause no bony lysis nor periosteal proliferation. Osteochondromas may occur in two forms; solitary or multiple. Although histology and biologic behavior are identical, when in the multiple form the condition has been termed multiple cartilaginous exostoses. Malignant transformation of multiple cartilaginous exostoses has been reported in three mature dogs. We report two dogs with malignant transformation of solitary spinal osteochondromas. Both underwent transformation to osteosarcoma. Despite the benign radiographic appearance of osteochondromas and multiple cartilaginous exostoses, clinical signs should alert the clinician to the possibility of malignant transformation.

Abstract
Papers by Harms [3] and Thieme [19] acknowledge Kahlbaum as a pioneer in the field of children and adolescent psychiatry as well as the work in his asylum in Görlitz, whereas Katzenstein [8] analyses his contribution to the development of psychiatry as theory. The present article is meant as a supplement to these. It is devoted to Kahlbaum's life before he became accepted as a therapist as well as scientist. As a result, first of all by having investigated his student time in Leipzig, it can prove conjectures that Kahlbaum became interested in psychiatric issues rather late. Furthermore the paper reconstructs the discussion lead around his most well-known scientific work, his nosology of 1863, and substantiates the fact that its author experienced appreciation in this particular field only decades later.

Abstract
Paul Schroeder was born about 125 years ago--on May, 19th 1873. He essentially influenced the development of children's and adolescents' psychiatry. From 1925 until 1938 he was head of Leipzig psychiatric university hospital where he beside other things founded a specific "department for adolescent psychopaths". He particularly emphasized the importance of connecting the fields of psychiatry, neurology, psychology, paediatrics and educational theory. Here he also demanded to establish separate chairs for children's and adolescents' psychiatry. In 1937 he was elected president of the International society for child psychiatry.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Ever so often one can read about the "Werther effect" in psychiatric literature. Until now this term has not lost its imaginative power, and still has its impact as well as being the subject of controversial discussion. METHOD In order to clarify the "Werther effect", it seemed first of all necessary to illuminate the real biographical background of Goethe's "The sorrows of young Werther" and the extraordinarily eventful history of its reception. RESULTS This essay also cites comments on this novel made by various personalities and authorities in an attempt to provide some hints on the real impact that Goethe's novel had at its time and showing the quarrels it brought about. CONCLUSIONS Here the author comes to the conclusion that considering the ideologies prevailing at that time (late enlightenment and sentimentalism) the dispute about Goethe's work only aims at hiding the actual discussion about the people's right of self-determination.

Abstract
A 4-year-old female, spayed Border Collie Dog was brought to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital for evaluation of a progressive head tilt and ataxia that were unresponsive to therapy. Neurologic examination localized a right-sided lesion. The owner refused additional diagnostic tests, and necropsy was performed after euthanasia. Gross findings included atrophy of the temporal muscles and a moderately well delineated, 2.5- x 1.5- x 1.0-cm, gray soft-tissue mass compressing the right cerebellar hemisphere and dorsal hindbrain, resulting in massive dilatation of the lateral, third, and fourth ventricles and hydrocephalus. Histologic examination revealed two distinct features: undifferentiated, primitive, polygonal to fusiform cells with typical morphologic characteristics of medulloblastoma and interspersed areas containing myelinated axons and cells with glial and neuronal differentiation. Immunohistochemical examination confirmed the presence of primitive neuroepithelium and cells with glial and neuronal differentiation.

Abstract
After multiple cases of chronic diarrhea and weight loss in a farmed elk herd, 3 yearlings and 1 adult elk with similar clinical signs were euthanatized and necropsied. Gross and histologic evidence of paratuberculosis were found in the yearlings. Evidence of serum antibody to Mycobacterium paratuberculosis was detected in the 2 elk with the most disseminated infection. Acid-fast organisms were isolated from multiple organs in all 4 elk and identified as M paratuberculosis by DNA probe. Thirty-five percent of 1 calf crop (n = 31) died or were euthanatized because of paratuberculosis before they were 2 years old. The organism was believed to have been spread by standing water that was used by calves as a wallow and a source of drinking water. The water was believed to have been contaminated by an infected adult female elk introduced to the herd just before calving season.

Abstract
Abdominal ultrasound examinations of 20 dogs with confirmed leptospirosis were reviewed retrospectively for renal abnormalities. Three dogs had a normal ultrasound examination. The remaining 17 dogs had sonographic abnormalities of the kidneys. These abnormalities, seen either alone or in combination, included renalmegaly (n=10), pyelectasia (n=9), increased cortical echogenicity (n=15), perinephric effusion (n=5), and a medullary band of increased echogenicity (n=6). At our institution, the medullary band of increased echogenicity has only been seen in dogs with leptospirosis and may therefore be a specific sonographic sign for this disease.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the role of apoptosis in retinal photoreceptor degeneration in dogs with sudden acquired retinal degeneration syndrome (SARDS). SAMPLE POPULATION Retinas from 3 dogs with SARDS and from 2 clinically normal adult dogs. PROCEDURE Apoptosis was identified by in situ end-labeling and observation of characteristic morphologic changes by light microscopy. RESULTS The degree of photoreceptor degeneration varied with duration of vision loss in SARDS-affected eyes. The retina of all 3 SARDS-affected eyes had numerous (34, 61, and 70) apoptotic nuclei per section that were overwhelmingly located in the outer nuclear layer. Apoptotic nuclei were not detected, or were rare in similarly sized retinal sections from normal dogs. Inflammation was not an important feature of SARDS. CONCLUSIONS Apoptosis appears to be at least 1 mechanism of photoreceptor cell death in dogs with SARDS. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Because apoptosis appears to be a final common pathway in many retinal degeneration syndromes, future treatment strategies that control apoptosis in other diseases may be applicable to dogs with SARDS. Halting this pathway may allow some photoreceptors to survive and, perhaps, preserve vision.

Abstract
The transport function of an indicator through an organ allows the calculation of important physiological parameters, but its estimation, especially in the presence of recirculation, can be difficult. In this paper, we estimate the transport function of 3H-mannitol (an extracellular tracer of glucose) in the human leg skeletal muscle. To do so, an indicator bolus is administered into the femoral artery and its recirculating dilution curves are nonuniformly sampled in both the femoral artery and the femoral vein. A new deconvolution-based method is used to simultaneously estimate the indicator transport function and the organ plasma flow. Subsequently, the indicator mean transit time and distribution volume are calculated. The reliability of the method is assessed by Monte Carlo simulation. The ability to estimate parameters, like mean transit time and extracellular distribution volume, is critical to the study of pathophysiologic states such as diabetes, insulin resistance, and hypertension.

Abstract
In this study we demonstrate that mice which lack the murine interleukin-8 receptor homologue exhibit enhanced resistance during the early stage of infection (1-4 days after i.v. challenge with Listeria monocytogenes). This result is surprising in that interleukin-8 and other CXC chemokines are key players in the accumulation of inflammatory neutrophils, which is thought to be critical for resistance to listeriosis. Paradoxically, some of the interleukin-8 receptor knockout mice that survived acute infection with L. monocytogenes demonstrated evidence of chronic infection with L. monocytogenes.

Abstract
A study was designed to evaluate quantitative ultrasonographic characteristics of a diffuse parenchymal disease in an experimental model of subclinical fatty infiltration of the liver using diet-induced obesity and dietary restriction in the cat. Ultrasound images of livers were quantitatively analysed by a video signal analysis technique before, during and at the end of obesity induction, and then during and following dietary restriction. Attenuation and brightness (backscatter coefficient) were correlated with hepatic lipid content obtained from the livers by surgical and ultrasound-guided percutaneous biopsy. Attenuation and backscatter increased as hepatic lipid content increased. Both attenuation and backscatter significantly correlated with the hepatic lipid content (P=0.002 and P=0.02 respectively). This model of subclinical fatty infiltration of the liver in the cat demonstrates that hepatic lipid content increases as a consequence of obesity and of severe dietary restriction. Infiltration of the liver with fat may be evaluated non-invasively using quantitative ultrasonography by the video signal analysis technique. This method of image analysis may prove useful for the evaluation of diffuse parenchymal organ disease.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES It has been widely accepted in the literature that various forms of physical exercise, even in a single session, enhance positive mood. It has also been shown that physical exercise may sometimes enhance creative thinking, but the evidence is inconclusive. Positive moods can favour creative thinking, but the opposite has also been reported and these relations are unclear. There is a large anecdotal literature suggesting that creative people sometimes use bodily movement to help overcome "blocks". The aim of this study was to establish whether post-exercise creative thinking was attributable to improved mood. METHODS The responses of 63 participants to an exercise (aerobic workout or aerobic dance) and a "neutral" video watching condition were compared. Mood was measured using an adjective list, and creative thinking was tested by three measures of the Torrance test. RESULTS Analysis of variance showed a large and significant increase in positive mood after exercise (P < 0.001) and a significant decrease in positive mood after video watching (P < 0.001). A significant increase between the creative thinking scores of the two conditions was found on the flexibility (variety of responses) measure (P < 0.05). A multifactorial analysis of all data failed to show a significant covariance of creative thinking with the two measures of mood (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that mood and creativity were improved by physical exercise independently of each other.

Abstract
Ultrasound attenuation and backscatter changes resulting from glucocorticoid administration were investigated in a dog model. Ten beagle dogs were randomized into two groups: five were given 2 mg/kg/day IM injections of prednisone to induce steroid hepatopathy and five served as controls. Histology showed vacuolization in most hepatocytes of treated animals on the third day of treatment, and larger, midzonally distributed vacuoles from day 7 on. An increase in both ultrasonic attenuation and backscatter was observed in treated dogs during in vivo measurements. Pooled data from the two groups suggest that attenuation elevations precede backscatter changes. Attenuation was significantly higher in the treated animals than in the controls by day 7. Both attenuation and backscatter were significantly higher in livers of treated than untreated dogs when measured by direct application of the transducer on the liver following euthanasia. We conclude that attenuation and backscatter coefficients can detect early changes in the liver associated with steroid hepatopathy. This may be a useful model to investigate detection of diffuse liver disease with ultrasound tissue characterization.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the usefulness of a new method of measuring acoustic backscatter and attenuation in the liver of dogs with experimental steroid-induced hepatopathy. ANIMALS 10 clinically normal dogs. PROCEDURE Steroid hepatopathy was induced by daily injections of prednisone (2 mg/kg of body weight, IM). Dogs were evaluated histologically and were sonographically imaged on days 0, 3, 7, 10, and 14. Acoustic backscatter and attenuation were measured from in vivo images of dogs, using a video signal method, and compared with results obtained from analysis of the unprocessed radio frequency signal. RESULTS Histologic evaluation revealed midzonal, predominantly water-filled vacuoles in hepatocytes by day 7, which persisted for the remainder of the study and significantly (P = 0.0001) increased liver weight on day 14. Attenuation and backscatter increased during the experimental period. Mean effective attenuation difference was higher (P = 0.015) in the liver imaged through a left paraxyphoid window in experimental dogs by day 3. Significantly (P < 0.05) greater attenuation persisted in the liver of experimental dogs throughout the experimental period. Mean backscatter ratio was significantly increased (P = 0.02) by day 10. Uncorrected pixel intensity of the liver in 2 experimental dogs was approximately equal to that of the spleen on day 10 and greater than that of the spleen on day 14. CONCLUSION Administration of prednisone to dogs results in increased acoustic backscatter and attenuation in the liver. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The video signal method is a sensitive technique for detecting subtle acoustic changes in the liver of dogs.

Abstract
The authors encountered five patients who first had visual hallucinations while taking erythropoietin. Since this association had not previously been reported, the authors studied a convenience sample of dialysis patients at two institutions to determine the incidence of visual hallucinations in patients on erythropoietin and possible associated risk factors. Eleven percent of the patients had visual hallucinations at one institution with no other factor than erythropoietin as a probable cause and 2% at the other. Significant risk factors for hallucinations included diabetic retinopathy or cataracts (chi 2 = 4.59, df = 1, P = 0.032) and older age (t = 2.24, df = 123, P = 0.27). A multivariate analysis comparing visual hallucinations, eye pathology, and age showed that eye pathology was close to the trend level of significance but that age maintained significance as a risk factor. The visual hallucinations occurred in response to the administration of erythropoietin and appeared to vary in relation to dose. Similarities between the syndrome of visual hallucinations in dialysis patients taking erythropoietin and the syndrome of visual hallucinations in dialysis patients taking erythropoietin and the Charles Bonnet syndrome are discussed.

Abstract
An osteosarcoma arising from the left hemimandible was diagnosed in an adult American robin (Turdus migratorius). Neoplastic spindle cells were observed extending away from foci of trabecular bone in dense sheets, occasionally within osteoid tissue. The variably pleomorphic spindle cells contained fibrillar, lightly basophilic cytoplasm, irregular, round to ovoid nuclei, and single or multiple small nucleoli. This is the first report of an osseous neoplasm in a wild passerine.

Abstract
A 6-year-old neutered male Golden Retriever was admitted for evaluation of intermittent hematuria of 2 months' duration. A 3-cm heterogeneous mass causing distortion of the caudomedial aspect of the left kidney was detected via ultrasonography. Histologic examination of a renal tissue sample obtained by ultrasound-guided biopsy revealed a telangiectatic vascular plexus of unknown origin. Low glomerular filtration rate was identified by a modified exogenous creatinine clearance test. Excretory urography revealed a filling defect in the medial aspect of the caudal pole of the kidney, near the hilus. Because total renal function was low, a decision was made to perform nephron-sparing surgery involving resection of centrally located renal parenchymal and pelvic tissue by en bloc resection in the median plane, instead of radical nephrectomy. After surgery, the hematuria resolved and further decrease in renal function was not evident. Nephron-sparing surgery is a viable option for dogs with compromised renal function when there is concern that radical nephrectomy may precipitate uremia.

Abstract
Three male Shar-pei dogs and one female spayed Boxer dog ranging in age from 4 years, 4 months to 7 years, 8 months had 4-7-week histories of diarrhea, progressive anorexia, weight loss, and vomiting. The dogs were depressed, lethargic, and hypoalbuminemic, with losses of 23-39% of body weight. Endoscopic examination revealed gastric ulceration with areas of mucosal hyperemia and pallor. Small nodules with occasional central depressions were present in three dogs. Gastric and proximal duodenal mucosal biopsies showed neoplastic lymphocytes infiltrating the lamina propria, with invasion of the superficial and glandular epithelial basement membrane. Immunohistochemical evaluation of two dogs was negative for anti-canine IgG and positive for anti-CD3. Necropsy of the Boxer and two Shar-peis confirmed epitheliotropic gastric and small intestinal lymphoma in all three dogs, with mesenteric lymph node and hepatic involvement in two and one dog, respectively.

Abstract
We measured nocturnal plasma erythropoietin concentration (EPO) in eight subjects with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) and eight healthy overweight subjects while they were undergoing nocturnal polysomnography. We also measured EPO (radioimmunoassay) after 120 min of exposure to 10.5% O2. The subjects with OSAS had a respiratory disturbance index (RDI) of 50.8 +/- 41.9 and a maximal O2 desaturation of 65 +/- 13.3%, and they spent 104.5 +/- 89.3 min out of a total sleep time of 356 +/- 54 min below 90% oxygen saturation (T90). Nocturnal EPO concentrations were normal and did not differ between the two groups. We found no correlation between the T90, T80, or RDI and either the mean or maximal EPO concentrations. After the exposure to 10.5% oxygen, during which oxygen saturations were between 80 and 85%, the healthy subjects and those with OSAS developed increases in EPO of 34 and 49%, respectively, 240 min after the initiation of exposure (p < 0.05). We conclude that the nocturnal hypoxemia occurring in these subjects with OSAS may not have been sufficiently severe to stimulate an increased EPO production. The lack of EPO response was not due to down-regulation of EPO production.

Abstract
Recent studies have established the importance of neutrophils in innate resistance to Listeria monocytogenes infection in mice. The purpose of this study was to determine the importance of neutrophils in acquired resistance to L. monocytogenes infection. Previously immunized mice that were depleted of neutrophils by administration of the antigranulocyte monoclonal antibody RB6-8C5 demonstrated less resistance to L. monocytogenes challenge than did nonimmunized control mice. In contrast, immunized control mice exhibited a heightened resistance to rechallenge, as expected. These results suggest that neutrophils make previously unrecognized contributions to acquired immunity to a facultative intracellular pathogen.

Abstract
The Type A behaviour pattern is a well-documented, if controversial, risk factor for coronary heart disease. Surprisingly, relatively little work has been reported on ways of modifying this behaviour pattern. Aerobic exercise, with its demonstrated benefits for both cardiovascular reactivity and psychological 'well-being', is a promising treatment. The literature is reviewed and recommendations are made for practical applications and future research.

Abstract
The effect of recombinant murine IL-12 (rIL-12) or anti-IL-12 antibody administration on resistance to murine listeriosis was investigated. Mice given a single 0.5 micrograms dose of rIL-12 had 1.5 log10 fewer listeriae in their spleens and livers as compared with control infected mice 3 days after L. monocytogenes challenge. Conversely, administration of anti-IL-12 IgG caused an equivalent increase in the cfu of L. monocytogenes recovered from the spleens and livers as compared to control mice. This is the first report of such a protective effect from a single dose of rIL-12. Treatment of uninfected mice with rIL-12 induced IFN-gamma mRNA production in their livers. Infection of mice with L. monocytogenes caused a similar increase in IFN-gamma mRNA levels that was not increased further by concurrent treatment with rIL-12. Treatment of mice with an anti-IFN-gamma MAb eliminated the protective effect of IL-12 on Listeria infection. Expression of TNF-alpha, IL-10 and IL-12p40 mRNA in L. monocytogenes-infected mice were not significantly altered by administration of either anti-IL-12 IgG or rIL-12. rIL-12 administration was associated with increased serum AST levels, a measure of liver damage, 1 day after treatment in L. monocytogenes-infected mice. In addition, rIL-12 administration was associated with the increased presence of small inflammatory foci and necrotic hepatocytes in both infected and uninfected mice, suggesting a proinflammatory role for IL-12 in the liver.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of endogenous interleukin-1 (IL-1) on resistance to paratuberculosis infection in experimentally infected gnotobiotic mice. Following a 6-month treatment with prednisolone to facilitate bacillary multiplication, control mice substantially reduced the numbers of M. paratuberculosis in the liver and ileum. In contrast, mice injected with a monoclonal antibody against the type I IL-1 receptor failed to reduce the numbers of M. paratuberculosis in the liver and ileum and exhibited more liver granulomas, which contained numerous acid-fast bacilli. These results indicate a significant role for endogenous IL-1 in host defense against experimental M. paratuberculosis infection in mice.

Abstract
Abstract
Mice injected i.p. with RB6-8C5 mAb experienced a profound depletion of neutrophils in the bloodstream and spleen and significant impairment of their resistance to experimental infection with Listeria monocytogenes. Control mice survived i.v. inoculation with 5 x 10(4) L. monocytogenes; whereas, most RB6-8C5 mAb-treated mice inoculated i.v. with as few as 10 L. monocytogenes died within 6 days. RB6-8C5 mAb treatment was particularly deleterious when given within the first 24 h after i.v. inoculation with L. monocytogenes; however, some adverse effect was observed even when administration was delayed until 3 or 5 days after bacterial inoculation. Histopathologic examination of the livers of RB6-8C5 mAb-treated mice revealed necrotic foci that were characterized by few inflammatory cells and massive numbers of Gram-positive bacteria within hepatocytes. Additional evidence that the effects of RB6-8C5 mAb administration were chiefly due to neutrophil depletion include: 1) the effects of RB6-8C5 mAb treatment occurred more rapidly than what is generally seen in mice treated with anti-T cell mAbs, 2) similar results were observed with normal and scid mice, 3) RB6-8C5 mAb administration did not diminish delayed-type hypersensitivity nor the ability of spleen cells from immunized mice to transfer resistance, and 4) natural killer cell activity was unaffected by RB6-8C5 mAb administration. The results of this study provide additional evidence in support of the importance of neutrophils in the early stage of innate resistance to murine listeriosis.

Abstract
Insulin-mediated glucose uptake (IMGU) occurs principally in skeletal muscle. To directly examine whether skeletal muscle perfusion (F) can directly and independently modulate IMGU, we combined the hyperinsulinemic euglycemic clamp and leg balance techniques [leg glucose uptake (LGU) = arteriovenous glucose difference (delta AVG) x F]. Young (< 40 yr) healthy lean subjects were studied during euglycemic hyperinsulinemia of approximately 23 microU/ml (group I, n = 8) and approximately 950 microU/ml (group II, n = 6). Femoral delta AVG and leg F were measured, and LGU was calculated at baseline after approximately 200 min of steady-state hyperinsulinemia alone and during a superimposed intrafemoral artery infusion of methacholine hydrochloride designed to increase leg F two- to threefold. In groups I and II, insulin raised the delta AVG approximately 4- and 14-fold, respectively (P < 0.0001). Leg F was unchanged during the low-dose insulin infusion (group I) but increased 112 +/- 35% in group II (P < 0.001). During methacholine infusion the delta AVG narrowed 35.9 +/- 6.8% (P < 0.01) and 20.5 +/- 4.8% (P < 0.05) in groups I and II, respectively. Leg F rose 224 +/- 30% (P < 0.01) and 79 +/- 13% (P < 0.05) above the flow rate achieved with insulin alone. Thus, during methacholine flow modulation, LGU increased 116 +/- 36% (P < 0.01) and 47 +/- 11% (P < 0.05) in groups I and II, respectively. In conclusion, skeletal muscle perfusion during hyperinsulinemia can act as an independent determinant of IMGU.

Abstract
Subclinical lumbar polyradiculopathy was present in the intradural dorsal and ventral nerve rootlets of 19 aged individuals of the following wild and exotic mammalian species: woodrat, raccoon, mink, lynx, reindeer, red deer, musk ox, scimitar-horned oryx, Arabian oryx, hybrid waterbuck, Persian onager, Przewalski's wild horse, Malayan sun bear, Asian elephant, East African river hippopotamus, vervet monkey and rhesus monkey. It was characterized by mild to severe multifocal ballooning of myelin sheaths. Occasionally, ballooned myelin sheaths contained thin strands of myelin and macrophages surrounding distorted axons. Additionally, a mild incidental lymphocytic polyneuritis was present in intradural nerve rootlets of the Malayan sun bear, and a moderate lymphocytic spinal ganglionitis in the East African river hippopotamus.

Abstract
To determine whether intrauterine transmission of Borrelia burgdorferi could exist in dogs, 10 female Beagles were inoculated intradermally with approximately 1,000 B burgdorferi on day 1 of proestrus; inoculation was repeated every 2 weeks during the gestation period. Ten female control Beagles were similarly inoculated with phosphate-buffered saline solution. Prior to the start of the study, all females and 3 males used for breeding were seronegative for B burgdorferi on the basis of results of the indirect fluorescent antibody test and immunoblot (western analysis. Similarly, results of culture of blood for B burgdorferi were negative. All 20 of the females were bred naturally. Blood samples were collected weekly for serologic testing and culture. Blood samples were obtained from live pups on day 1 of life, then weekly until pups were 6 weeks old when they were euthanatized. Tissues were obtained for culture and testing by use of polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Of 10 spirochete-inoculated (SI) females, 8 became infected with B burgdorferi as evidenced by spirochete culture results and/or PCR-detected B burgdorferi DNA in the tissues of females or their pups. Of the 10 SI females, 8 delivered litters (3 to 7 pups) that had at least 1 neonatal or 6-week-old pup with B burgdorferi DNA-positive tissues (by PCR), and spirochetes were cultured from tissues from pups of 2 litters.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract
An 8-yr-old male capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris), a resident of an urban zoological collection in upstate New York (USA), had a mass posteroventral to its left stifle; it was of unknown duration. The mass was a fibrosarcoma based on invasive sheets of interwoven spindle-shaped neoplastic cells with moderate associated extracellular matrix composed of collagen fibers. Supportive immunohistochemical staining was positive for vimentin but negative for cytokeratins, desmin, and myoglobin. The animal subsequently died of unknown causes. This is the first known report of a neoplasm in a capybara.
