Abstract
Herein, we present the intramolecular [2+2] cycloadditions of dienones promoted through sensitization, using a polypyridyl iridium(III) catalyst, to form bridged cyclobutanes. In contrast to previous examples of straight [2+2] cycloadditions, these efficient crossed additions were achieved under irradiation with visible light. The reactions delivered desired bridged benzobicycloheptanone products with excellent regioselectivity in high yields (up to 96%). This process is superior to previous syntheses of benzobicyclo[3.1.1]heptanones, which are readily converted to B-norbenzomorphan analogues of biological significance. Electrochemical, computational, and spectroscopic studies substantiated the mechanism of triplet energy transfer and explained the unusual regiocontrol.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES A higher fasting triglyceride (TG) concentration has been associated with better functional outcomes after stroke. Recent observational studies have found that nonfasting TG concentrations predict incident stroke better than fasting concentrations. The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between fasting and nonfasting serum TG concentrations versus 3-month functional activity and mortality among patients with acute ischaemic stroke. METHODS This was a retrospective study based on prospectively collected data. Blood samples were taken from acute ischaemic stroke patients at the time of hospital presentation to measure nonfasting TG concentrations and on the following morning to measure fasting TG concentrations. Fasting and nonfasting serum TG concentrations were collapsed into their respective three categories. All participants were assessed at 3 months after stroke using the modified Rankin Scale. RESULTS A total of 556 ischaemic stroke patients (67 ± 13 years; 57% male) were included in this study. Bivariately, the highest fasting and nonfasting TG category had more of a likelihood of good 3-month functional activity and less of a likelihood of being dead at 3 months compared to their respective lowest TG categories. The highest fasting TG (OR 2.93, 95% CI 1.67-5.14) and nonfasting TG (OR 2.66, 95% CI 1.51-4.67) categories had more of a likelihood of good 3-month functional activity compared to their respective lowest TG categories after adjustment for possible confounders. DISCUSSION Higher fasting and nonfasting serum TG concentrations predicted good poststroke outcome independently of other prognostic factors.

Abstract
Transient epileptic amnesia (TEA) is defined as recurrent ictal and interictal transient memory disturbances typically occurring upon waking. Patients with TEA usually cannot remember the episodes. Electroencephalographic (EEG) abnormalities are usually localized on the dominant or bilateral temporal lobes. Here we report two cases of TEA with atypical features. The patients could remember the episodes afterwards, and abnormal discharges on EEG were detected in the temporal lobes of the non-dominant hemisphere. We suggest that confinement of epileptic discharge to the non-dominant temporal lobe can lead to partial preservation of consciousness during seizure attacks that produce transient amnesia.

Abstract
We provide evidence for the causal impact of social status on longevity by exploiting a natural experiment in which subjects undergo a shift in their social status without considerable economic impact. We gather data on 4190 scientists who were either nominated for or successfully elected to the Chinese Academy of Science or of Engineering. Being elected as an academician in China is a boost in social status (vice-ministerial level) with negligible direct economic impact (US$30 monthly before 2009). After correcting for two sources of bias, (1) some potential academicians decease too young to be elected, leading to selection bias in favor of academicians and (2) the endogenous relationship between health and social status, we find that the enhanced social status of becoming an academician leads to approximately 1.2 years longer life. Abstract
Background: There are currently few studies regarding late-onset neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (LO-NMOSD). Objective: We aimed to describe the characteristic features of patients with LO-NMOSD in Korea. Methods: Anti-aquaporin-4 antibody-positive patients with neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) from nine tertiary hospitals were reviewed retrospectively. The patients were divided into two groups based on age of onset: LO-NMOSD (⩾50 years of age at onset) versus early-onset neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (EO-NMOSD) (<50 years of age at onset). Clinical, laboratory, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) parameters were investigated. Results: Among a total of 147 patients (125 female; age of onset, 39.4 ± 15.2 years), 45 patients (30.6%) had an age of onset of more than 50 years. Compared to patients with EO-NMOSD, patients with LO-NMOSD had more frequent isolated spinal cord involvement at onset (64.4% vs 37.2%, p = 0.002), less frequent involvement of the optic nerve (40.0% vs 67.7%, p = 0.002), and less frequent brain MRI lesions (31.1% vs 50.0%, p = 0.034). Furthermore, there was a significant positive correlation between age of onset and Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) score at last follow-up ( r = 0.246, p = 0.003). Conclusion: Age of onset could be an important predictor of lesion location and clinical course of patients with NMOSD.

Abstract
A novel and efficient phosphine-catalyzed intramolecular cyclization of α-nitroethylallenic esters is reported. This process appears to be practical for the stereoselective syntheses of (Z)-furan-2(3H)-one oxime derivatives in excellent yields. Mechanistically, the reaction involves a phosphine-catalyzed Michael addition of an alkylideneazinate and rearrangement of the cyclic nitronate to the α-nitrosodihydrofuran.

Abstract
Described herein is a catalytic asymmetric total synthesis of (-)-actinophyllic acid, with the key step being a chiral phosphine-catalyzed [3 + 2] annulation between an imine and an allenoate to form a pyrroline intermediate in 99% yield and 94% ee. The synthesis also features CuI-catalyzed coupling between a ketoester and a 2-iodoindole to shape the tetrahydroazocine ring; intramolecular alkylative lactonization; SmI2-mediated intramolecular pinacol coupling between ketone and lactone subunits to assemble the complex skeleton of (-)-actinophyllic acid; and an unprecedented regioselective dehydroxylation.

Abstract
The first Lewis acid-catalyzed intramolecular interrupted Nazarov cyclization of 1,4-pentadien-3-ols is described. Using FeBr3 as the catalyst, a series of new substituted cyclopenta[b]indoles was prepared-through a sequence of Nazarov cyclization, nucleophilic amination, and isomerization-with good yields and high diastereo- and regioselectivities. A similar catalytic process was also developed for the synthesis of structurally interesting spiro[indene-1,4'-quinoline]s.

Abstract
BACKGROUND IgE/Ag-stimulated mast cells release various pro-allergic inflammatory mediators, including histamine, eicosanoids, and pro-inflammatory cytokines. NecroX-5, a cell permeable necrosis inhibitor, showed cytoprotective effects in both in vitro and in vivo models. However, the anti-allergic effect of NecroX-5 has not yet been investigated. The aims of this study were to evaluate the anti-allergic activity of NecroX-5 in vivo and to investigate the underlying mechanism in vitro. METHODS The anti-allergic activity of NecroX-5 was evaluated in vitro using bone marrow-derived mast cells (BMMCs) and IgE receptor-bearing RBL-2H3 or KU812 cells and in vivo using a mouse model of passive anaphylaxis. The levels of histamine, eicosanoids (PGD2 and LTC4 ), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and interleukin-6 (IL-6) were measured using enzyme immunoassay kits. The mechanism underlying the action of NecroX-5 was investigated using immunoblotting, immunoprecipitation, and gene knockdown techniques. RESULTS NecroX-5 markedly inhibited mast cell degranulation and the synthesis of eicosanoids, TNF-α, and IL-6 by suppressing the activation of Syk, LAT, phospholipase Cγ1, MAP kinases, the Akt/NF-κB pathway, and intracellular Ca(2+) mobilization via the activation of phosphatase SHP-1. Oral administration of NecroX-5 effectively suppressed mast cell-dependent passive cutaneous and systemic anaphylactic reactions in a dose-dependent manner. CONCLUSIONS NecroX-5 might be a potential candidate for the development of a novel anti-allergic agent that suppresses IgE-dependent mast cells signaling.

Abstract
A PPh3-mediated multicomponent reaction between o-phthalaldehydes, nucleophiles, and monosubstituted allenes furnishes functionalized non-C2-symmetric naphthalenes in synthetically useful yields. When the o-phthalaldehydes were reacted with 1,3-disubstituted allenes in the presence of PPh2Et, naphthalene derivatives were also obtained in up to quantitative yields. The mechanism of the latter transformation is straightforward: aldol addition followed by Wittig olefination and dehydration. The mechanism of the former is a tandem γ-umpolung/aldol/Wittig/dehydration process, as established by preparation of putative reaction intermediates and mass spectrometric analysis. This transformation can be applied iteratively to prepare anthracenes and tetracenes using carboxylic acids as pronucleophiles.

Abstract
Small molecule inhibitors against protein geranylgeranyltransferase-I such as P61A6 have been shown to inhibit proliferation of a variety of human cancer cells and exhibit antitumor activity in mouse models. Development of these inhibitors could be dramatically accelerated by conferring tumor targeting and controlled release capability. As a first step towards this goal, we have encapsulated P61A6 into a new type of liposomes that open and release cargos only under low pH condition. These low pH-release type liposomes were prepared by adjusting the ratio of two types of phospholipid derivatives. Loading of geranylgeranyltransferase-I inhibitor (GGTI) generated liposomes with average diameter of 50–100 nm. GGTI release in solution was sharply dependent on pH values, only showing release at pH lower than 6. Release of cargos in a pH-dependent manner inside the cell was demonstrated by the use of a proton pump inhibitor Bafilomycin A1 that Increased lysosomal pH and inhibited the release of a dye carried in the pH-liposome. Delivery of GGTI to human pancreatic cancer cells was demonstrated by the inhibition of protein geranylgeranylation inside the cell and this effect was blocked by Bafilomycin A1. In addition, GGTI delivered by pH-liposomes induced proliferation inhibition, G1 cell cycle arrest that is associated with the expression of cell cycle regulator p21CIP1/WAF1. Proliferation inhibition was also observed with various lung cancer cell lines. Availability of nanoformulated GGTI opens up the possibility to combine with other types of inhibitors. To demonstrate this point, we combined the liposomal-GGTI with farnesyltransferase inhibitor (FTI) to inhibit K-Ras signaling in pancreatic cancer cells. Our results show that the activated K-Ras signaling in these cells can be effectively inhibited and that synergistic effect of the two drugs is observed. Our results suggest a new direction in the use of GGTI for cancer therapy.
