Abstract
AIMS To select adhesive strains among strains of Lactobacillus and to apply them to inhibit adhesion of food-borne pathogens. METHODS AND RESULTS Twelve Lactobacillus strains (10 from intestine) were examined for adhesion using Caco-2 cell cultures. The two most adhesive strains, Lactobacillus crispatus JCM 8779 and Lact. reuteri JCM 1081, were used to test antiadhesion activity against enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium and Enterococcus faecalis strains. Adhesion of the pathogens was inhibited by both Lactobacillus strains. Adhesion of Ent. faecalis was especially strongly inhibited by JCM 8779. Although antimicrobial activity was not detected in the culture supernatant fluid by agar well diffusion assay, the supernatant fluid obtained from the harvested JCM 8779 cell suspension showed bactericidal activity against Ent. faecalis. CONCLUSION The strong antiadhesion activity of JCM 8779 against Ent. faecalis appears to be due to the combined effect of both bactericidal activity and competition for attachment site. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY This is the first report that Lact. crispatus produces a bactericidal substance.

Abstract
The amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) spectrum of a fiber optical parametric amplifier in a gain-saturation condition is studied. We experimentally observed holes around the signal and the idler in the ASE spectrum of a deeply gain-saturated amplifier. This observation is explained by a theoretical model that includes parametric interactions among ASE components and the pump, signal, and idler beams.

Abstract
We isolated two CRF01_AE human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (95TNIH022 and 95TNIH047) from the 1995 blood samples derived from asymptomatic carriers in Ubonratchatani province of northeastern Thailand. Both isolates can replicate in peripheral blood mononuclear cells, but not in several T cell lines examined. The full-length sequences recovered from proviruses in infected cells by long-range polymerase chain reaction were determined. Phylogenetic analyses of these sequences at individual genes showed them to be closely related to those of reported CRF01_AE HIV-1, such as 1990 isolate CM240 and 1993 isolate 93TH253. Two isolates in this study also showed a similar pattern of CRF01_AE mosaicism and a similar structure at the long terminal repeat, i.e., a copy number of NF-kappaB binding sites, sequence at the TATA box, and the putative secondary structure of stem-loop in the transactivation response region. Our results showed that 1995 Thai E isolates could contribute to our understanding of the epidemiology, pathogenesis, and diagnostics of HIV-1 CRF01_AE and further to vaccine development.

Abstract
Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) proviral DNA sequences in and downstream of the 5' long terminal repeat (LTR) were compared among samples obtained from 13 HIV-1 CRF01_AE-infected individuals in Thailand from 1998 to 1999. Eleven individuals had highly conserved sequences compared with previously reported CRF01_AE viruses. However, T cell-specific factor (TCF)-1alpha motif, which is located just beside the 3' terminus of the nef sequence, was duplicated in 2 out of the 13 subjects, one of whom had also lost the 24 nucleotides next to the 3' of the primer-binding site. Thus, several characteristics of CRF01_AE LTR and gag-leader sequence were identified in some samples recently obtained in Thailand.

Abstract
PURPOSE We reviewed the usefulness of platelet scintigraphy, in which autologous platelets labeled with indium-111-oxine reveal thrombotic activity, for evaluating deep vein thrombosis (DVT). MATERIALS During the past 2 years, 39 cases with DVT were enrolled in this study. DVT was definitely diagnosed by color duplex scanning, platelet scintigraphy or both in all cases. For semiquantitative analysis, we estimated the ratio of accumulation in the abnormal region to that in the normal vein on the other side, and defined an abnormal accumulation ratio as over 1.2. RESULTS Abnormal accumulation ratio showing active DVT was recognized in 30 cases (77%), and showed a good correlation with clinical symptoms. In addition, in 19 cases with crural DVT, platelet scintigraphy showed abnormal accumulation ratio in 16 cases (84%), while duplex scanning detected thrombi in 13 cases (68%). In cases with abnormal accumulation ratio, thrombolytic and anticoagulant therapy were very effective for improving clinical symptoms as well inducing regression of the accumulation ratio. CONCLUSIONS Platelet scintigraphy was very useful for the diagnosis and treatment of DVT and for evaluation of the effect of anticoagulant therapy. Limitations in the definite diagnosis of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) have been apparent for more than three decades. During the last decade, duplex scanning has reached a high level of accuracy and has been considered the gold standard in the diagnosis of DVT, instead of venography. However, duplex scanning and venography demonstrates only the anatomic alterations associated with venous lesions. In contrast, in platelet scintigraphy, the labeled platelets are incorporated directly into the thrombus and can reveal thrombus activity. We noticed that autologous platelets labeled with indium-111-oxine accumulated on fresh lesions of DVT. This observation suggested two applications of this technique: 1) evaluation of the role of platelets in the pathophysiologic characteristics of DVT; and 2) monitoring the effects of anticoagulant therapy.

Abstract
Two novel heart-specific genes, C3orf3 (chromosome 3 open reading frame 3) and MMGL (myomegalin-like), were isolated using BodyMap, a gene expression database based on site-directed 3' expressed sequence tags (3'-ESTs) which were collected from nonbiased cDNA libraries of various tissues. The cDNA of C3orf3 was 1667 bp and was composed of 12 exons within a 10-kb-long genomic sequence. MMGL consisted of 8 exons within a genomic sequence of over 70 kb, leading to four alternatively spliced transcripts. Both genes were strongly expressed in heart and also in skeletal muscle. C3orf3 and MMGL were mapped to 3p22 and 1q1, respectively. Subcellular localizations of their putative proteins were determined as being in the cytoplasm for C3orf3 and in the cytoplasm and nucleus for MMGL. This study showed that BodyMap is a useful database for the isolation of tissue-specific genes.

Abstract
IFN-gamma-deficient (IFN-gamma-/-) mice induce potent in vitro immune responses such as anti-allo mixed lymphocyte reaction and CTL responses, whereas they often fail to exhibit in vivo immunity. Here, we investigated whether there exists a defect in tumor rejection responses and if so, which process of responses is impaired. IFN-gamma-/- and wild-type (WT) BALB/c mice were immunized with attenuated syngeneic CSA1M tumor cells. The capacity of T cells to mediate tumor protection was examined in Winn assays to assess the growth of tumor cells admixed with tumor-sensitized T cells. Splenic T cells from both groups of mice exhibited comparable levels of tumor-neutralizing activity. When portions of immunized mice were directly challenged with viable tumor cells, tumor rejection was induced only in WT mice. CD4(+) and CD8(+) T-cell infiltration were observed at the site of tumor challenge in WT mice, whereas such a T-cell infiltration did not occur in IFN-gamma-/- mice. Similarly, splenic T cells from interleukin 12-treated CSA1M-bearing IFN-gamma-/- and WT mice neutralized tumor cells at comparable efficacies in Winn assays. However, the migration of these T cells to tumor masses and the resultant interleukin 12-induced tumor regression took place in WT mice, but neither intratumoral T-cell infiltration nor tumor regression occurred in IFN-gamma-/- mice. These results indicate a critical requirement for IFN-gamma in the process of inducing T-cell migration to tumor sites rather than of generating antitumor protective T cells.

Abstract
The viral accessory gene product Nef has been shown to play an important role in human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1)-induced pathogenesis. Only little information is available regarding the differences in the host immune responses against Nef protein and its function in vivo among different subtypes of HIV-1. In the present study, we showed marked differences in the immune responses to Nef protein between subtypes B and E. The amino acid sequence in subtype E Nef showed 72% homology with that in subtype B. Most murine monoclonal antibodies obtained by immunization with subtype B or E Nef protein showed cross-reactivity with both Nef proteins (80 and 67%, respectively). Next, we focused on the immune responses among infected Japanese and Thai individuals. Subtyping of the individuals into B and E was carried out by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using synthetic peptides corresponding to the V3 loop representing the principal neutralizing domain. Most of the sera from these individuals reacted strongly with Gag p24 proteins derived from subtypes B and E at similar levels. However, the immune responses among these individuals to Nef protein were markedly different. Some subtype B-infected Japanese and Thai individuals (40 and 35%, respectively) showed higher levels of anti-Nef antibodies, although these antibodies preferentially recognized epitopes specific to subtype B. On the other hand, most of the subtype E-infected Japanese and Thai individuals showed low or no antibody responses to Nef proteins. Thus, immune responses to Nef were markedly different between subtypes B- and E-infected carriers, suggesting different function(s) for Nef in AIDS pathogenesis. Further, vaccine design must take into account the different subtypes of HIV-1.

Abstract
Two nuclear receptors, Ad4BP/SF-1 and Dax-1, are essential regulators for development and function of the mammalian reproductive system. Similarity in expression sites, such as adrenal glands, gonads, pituitary, and hypothalamus, suggests a functional interaction, and the phenotype similarities were manifested in Ad4BP/SF-1-deficient mice and in cases of natural human mutations of Dax-1. In this study, quantitative reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction analyses revealed that expression profiles of Dax-1 in embryonic gonads are different between the two sexes and also from those of Ad4BP/SF-1. Immunohistochemical analyses clarified the spatial and temporal expressions of the Dax-1 protein during development of tissues composing the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. During gonadal development, Dax-1 occurred after Ad4BP/SF-1 exhibiting a sexually dimorphic expression pattern at indifferent stages, indicating a possibility of Dax-1 involvement in earliest sex differentiation. When cord formation begins in the testis at embryonic day 12.5 (E12.5), Dax-1 was expressed strongly in Sertoli cells, but its expression level markedly decreased in Sertoli cells and increased in interstitial cells between E13.5 and E17.5. In the female, Dax-1 was strongly expressed in the entire ovarian primordium from E12.5 until E14.5, and then its expression level was decreased and limited to cells near the surface epithelium between E17.5 and postnatal day 0 (P0). During postnatal development of the testis, the variable staining of Dax-1 in Sertoli cells was detected as early as P7 and Dax-1-expressing Leydig cells became rare. In the postnatal ovary, Dax-1 expression was detected in granulosa cells with variable staining intensity, and occasionally in interstitial cells. During pituitary organogenesis, Dax-1 but not Ad4BP/SF-1 was expressed in the dorsal part of Rathke's pouch from E9.5. Later in development after E14.5, the distribution of Dax-1 overlapped with that of Ad4BP/SF-1, being restricted to gonadotropic cells in the anterior pituitary. In the ventromedial hypothalamus (VMH), Dax-1 and Ad4BP/SF-1 were mostly colocalized throughout the embryonic and postnatal development. Thus, the coexpression of Dax-1 and Ad4BP/SF-1 indicates their closely related functions in the development of the reproductive system. Furthermore, we noticed the presence of cells that express Dax-1 but not Ad4BP/SF-1, further indicating additional functions of Dax-1 in an Ad4BP/SF-1-independent molecular mechanism.

Abstract
6-Hydrazinopyridine-3-carboxylic acid (HYNIC) is a representative agent used to prepare technetium-99m ((99m)Tc)-labeled polypeptides with tricine as a coligand. However, (99m)Tc-HYNIC-labeled polypeptides show delayed elimination rates of the radioactivity not only from the blood but also from nontarget tissues such as the liver and kidney. In this study, a preformed chelate of tetrafluorophenol (TFP) active ester of [(99m)Tc](HYNIC)(tricine)(benzoylpyridine: BP) ternary complex was synthesized to prepare (99m)Tc-labeled polypeptides with higher stability against exchange reactions with proteins in plasma and lysosomes using the Fab fragment of a monoclonal antibody and galactosyl-neoglycoalbumin (NGA) as model polypeptides. When incubated in plasma, [(99m)Tc](HYNIC-Fab)(tricine)(BP) showed significant reduction of the radioactivity in high molecular weight fractions compared with [(99m)Tc](HYNIC-Fab)(tricine)(2.) When injected into mice, [(99m)Tc](HYNIC-NGA)(tricine)(BP) was metabolized to [(99m)Tc](HYNIC-lysine)(tricine)(BP) in the liver with no radioactivity detected in protein-bound fractions in contrast to the observations with [(99m)Tc](HYNIC-NGA)(tricine)(2.) In addition, [(99m)Tc](HYNIC-NGA)(tricine)(BP) showed significantly faster elimination rates of the radioactivity from the liver as compared with [(99m)Tc](HYNIC-NGA)(tricine)(2.) Similar results were observed with (99m)Tc-labeled Fab fragments where [(99m)Tc](HYNIC-Fab)(tricine)(BP) exhibited significantly faster elimination rates of the radioactivity not only from the blood but also from the kidney. These findings indicated that conjugation of [(99m)Tc](HYNIC)(tricine)(BP) ternary ligand complex to polypeptides accelerated elimination rates of the radioactivity from the blood and nontarget tissues due to low binding of the [(99m)Tc](HYNIC)(tricine)(BP) complex with proteins in the blood and in the lysosomes. Such characteristics would render the TFP active ester of [(99m)Tc](HYNIC)(tricine)(BP) complex attractive as a radiolabeling reagent for targeted imaging.

Abstract
In Earth's environment, the observed polar outflow rate for O(+) ions, the main source of oxygen above gravitational escape energy, corresponds to the loss of approximately 18% of the present-day atmospheric oxygen over 3 billion years. However, part of this apparent loss can actually be returned to the atmosphere. Examining loss rates of four escape routes with high-altitude spacecraft observations, we show that the total oxygen loss rate inferred from current knowledge is about one order of magnitude smaller than the polar O(+) outflow rate. This disagreement suggests that there may be a substantial return flux from the magnetosphere to the low-latitude ionosphere. Then the net oxygen loss over 3 billion years drops to approximately 2% of the current atmospheric oxygen content.

Abstract
Marfan syndrome (MFS), an autosomal dominant connective tissue disorder, is caused by mutations in the gene encoding fibrillin 1 (FBN1). The clinical spectrum and severity of MFS disorder varies greatly both between and within families. Since there have been only a few reports on the relationship between FBN1 genotypes and clinical phenotypes in Japanese patients, the FBN1 gene was analyzed in 27 Japanese patients diagnosed with MFS. The nucleotide sequence of the 65 exons of the FBN1 gene was analyzed by PCR and direct sequencing. We have identified six polymorphisms and nine mutations including: four missense mutations (C1652Y, Q2054P, D2127Y, C2221R) in six patients, three nonsense mutations (R215X, S813X, R2220X) in three patients, and two frameshift mutations (2567insT, 7790insT) in three patients. Six of these nine mutations were in the calcium-binding epidermal growth factor-like domains all causative mutations detected except for C2221R were novel. It has been reported that the severe phenotypes of infantile MFS correlate with mutations in the mid region of FBN1, however, mutations were not detected in this region in the population analyzed in this study. Our results suggest that the location of the mutation is not the sole determinant of phenotypic severity; rather there is some difference in the genetic basis of MFS between Japanese and Caucasian populations.

Abstract
Renal localization of radiolabeled antibody fragments constitutes a problem in targeted imaging and radiotherapy. Recently, we reported use of a novel radioiodination reagent, 3'-[131I]iodohippuryl N(epsilon)-maleoyl-L-lysine (HML), that liberates m-iodohippuric acid before antibody fragments are incorporated into renal cells. In mice, HML-conjugated Fab demonstrated low renal radioactivity levels from early postinjection times. In this study, renal metabolism of HML-conjugated Fab fragments prepared by different thiolation chemistries and by direct radioiodination were investigated to determine the mechanisms responsible for the low renal radioactivity levels. Fab fragments were thiolated by 2-iminothiolane modification or by reduction of disulfide bonds in the Fab fragments, followed by conjugation with radioiodinated HML to prepare [131I]HML-IT-Fab and [125I]HML-Fab, respectively. In biodistribution studies in mice, both [131I]HML-IT-Fab and [125I]HML-Fab demonstrated significantly lower renal radioactivity levels than those of [125I]Fab. In subcellular distribution studies, [125I]Fab showed migration of radioactivity from the membrane to the lysosomal fraction of the renal cells from 10 to 30 min postinjection. On the other hand, the majority of the radioactivity was detected only in the membrane fraction at the same time points after injection of both [131I]HML-IT-Fab and [125I]HML-Fab. In metabolic studies, while [125I]Fab remained intact at 10 min postinjection, both HML-conjugated Fab fragments generated m-iodohippuric acid as a radiometabolite at the same postinjection time. [131I]HML-IT-Fab registered two radiometabolites (intact [131I]HML-IT-Fab and m-iodohippuric acid), whereas additional radiometabolites were observed with [125I]HML-Fab. This suggested that metabolism of both HML-conjugated Fab fragments would occur in the membrane fractions of the renal cells. The findings of this study reinforced our previous hypothesis that radiochemical design of antibody fragments that liberate radiometabolites that are excreted into the urine by the action of brush border enzymes would constitute a useful strategy to reduce renal radioactivity levels from early postinjection times.

Abstract
The expression of chemokine receptors on leukocytes is related to their activation state. However, the exact mechanism underlying the induction of each chemokine receptor is poorly understood. Here, we investigated how CCR5, a chemokine receptor implicated in T cell trafficking and HIV infection, is induced in human T cells. CCR5 was marginally detected on a freshly prepared human peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) population. Long-term (8-day) stimulation of PBMC with IL-2 resulted in high levels of CCR5 expression on T cells. IL-12 failed to induce CCR5 on T cells in such a directly stimulated PBMC population. Stimulation of PBMC T cells with anti-CD3 plus anti-CD28 induced detectable albeit very low levels of CCR5 along with the induction of IL-12 receptor. However, these TCR-triggered T cells expressed much higher levels of CCR5 when stimulated with IL-12. Although IL-2 also induced CCR5 expression, CCR5 expression was more potent in IL-12 than IL-2 stimulation. These results indicate that, in addition to IL-2, IL-12 plays an important role in the induction of CCR5 expression on T cells, particularly TCR-triggered T cells.

Abstract
Shaking behavior, so-called wet dog shakes (WDS), in rats is characteristic behavior indicating morphine abstinence in morphine-dependence and central excitation in relation to seizures elicited by chemicals or electrical stimulation. We have found that paraquat (PQ), a nonselective herbicide, administered systemically to rats induces WDS in a dose-dependent manner. PQ-induced WDS are suppressed by nitric oxide (NO) synthase (NOS) inhibitors, but this suppression is not reversed by an NO precursor, L-arginine (L-Arg). The present study was performed to determine whether the NO system is associated with PQ-induced WDS in rats. A time-course study on the frequency of WDS for each 30-min period up to 120 min after PQ administration (70 mg/kg, s.c.) revealed that significant induction of WDS occurred during the first and second 30-min periods, that is within 60 min of PQ administration. A nonselective NOS inhibitor, Nomega-nitro-L-arginine (L-NA; 30 mg/kg, i.p.), reduced the frequency of the PQ-induced WDS during both of these periods, but the reduced frequency was not reversed by L-Arg (500 mg/kg, i.p.) in either period. Significant induction of WDS occurred when PQ (50 nmol) was administered directly into the ventral or dorsal hippocampus, but not when administered into the amygdala or the caudate putamen, indicating that the hippocampus plays an important role in PQ-induced WDS. The WDS after the administration of PQ into the dorsal hippocampus was significantly suppressed by pretreatment with L-NA (30 mg/kg, i.p.). The extracellular levels of nitrite (NO2-) and nitrate (NO3-), the oxidative products of NO, in the dorsal hippocampus determined by in vivo microdialysis, were stimulated after systemic PQ administration (70 mg/kg, s.c.) in urethane-anesthetized rats. The increases in extracellular NO2- and NO3- were inhibited by L-NA (30 mg/kg, i.p.), and this inhibition was partly reversed by L-Arg (500 mg/kg, i.p.). The increases in extracellular NO2- and NO3- in the dorsal hippocampus appeared 60 min after PQ administration, when the WDS had occurred and disappeared. These findings suggest that NO production in the hippocampus plays a minor role in PQ-induced WDS in rats and that the suppression of PQ-induced WDS by NOS inhibitors might be mediated though complex mechanisms in the brain.

Abstract
6-Hydrazinopyridine-3-carboxylic acid (HYNIC) constitutes one of the most attractive reagents to prepare (99m)Tc-labeled polypeptides and peptides of various molecular weights in combination with two tricine molecules as coligands. Indeed, (99m)Tc-HYNIC-conjugated IgG showed biodistribution of radioactivity similar to that of (111)In-DTPA-conjugated IgG. However, recent studies indicated significant plasma protein binding when the (99m)Tc labeling procedure was expanded to low molecular weight peptides. In this study, pharmacokinetics of (99m)Tc-HYNIC-conjugated IgG, Fab and RC160 using tricine were compared with their radioiodinated counterparts to evaluate this (99m)Tc-labeling method. In mice, [(99m)Tc](HYNIC-IgG)(tricine)(2) and [(99m)Tc](HYNIC-Fab)(tricine)(2) showed persistent localization of radioactivity in tissues when compared with their (125)I-labeled counterparts. [(99m)Tc](HYNIC-IgG)(tricine)(2) eliminated from the blood at a rate similar to that of (125)I-labeled IgG, while [(99m)Tc](HYNIC-Fab)(tricine)(2) showed significantly slower clearance of the radioactivity than (125)I-labeled Fab. On size-exclusion HPLC analyses, little changes were observed in radiochromatograms after incubation of [(99m)Tc](HYNIC-IgG)(tricine)(2) in murine plasma. However, [(99m)Tc](HYNIC-Fab)(tricine)(2) and [(99m)Tc](HYNIC-RC160)(tricine)(2) demonstrated significant increases in the radioactivity in higher molecular weight fractions in plasma. Formation of higher molecular weight species was reduced when [(99m)Tc](HYNIC-RC160)(tricine)(2) was stabilized with nicotinic acid (NIC) to generate [(99m)Tc](HYNIC-RC160)(tricine)(NIC). [(99m)Tc](HYNIC-RC160)(tricine)(NIC) also demonstrated significantly faster clearance of the radioactivity from the blood than [(99m)Tc](HYNIC-RC160)(tricine)(2). These findings suggested that one of the tricine coligands in (99m)Tc-HYNIC-labeled (poly)peptides would be replaced with plasma proteins to generate higher molecular weight species that exhibit slow blood clearance. In addition, the molecular sizes of parental peptides played an important role in the progression of the exchange reaction of one of the tricine coligands with plasma proteins.

Abstract
Recent evidence has accumulated which definitively shows that chemokine receptors CCR5 and CXCR4 play an essential role as coreceptors for human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection. Flow cytometric analysis permitted us to detect CD38, a surface marker of early differentiation, as well as activation of T cells, on about half of healthy donor-derived CD4(+) T cells. In this study, we focused on the susceptibility of CD38(+) and CD38(-) subsets of CD4(+) T cells to HIV-1 infection with different coreceptor tropisms. About 20% of peripheral blood mononuclear cell-derived resting CD4(+) T cells were recovered into the CD38(+) subset fraction by panning with a monoclonal antibody to CD38. Most of the cells in this CD38(high) fraction also expressed CD45RA and CD62L at higher intensities compared with those of CD38(low) fraction. CCR5(+) T cells predominated in the CD38(-) subset, although cell surface expression of CD4 and CXCR4 was almost similar between both subsets. This difference was consistent with a significantly higher susceptibility of the CD38(-) subset to a macrophage (M)-tropic HIV-1 strain. In contrast, it was shown that a T-tropic strain of HIV-1 could replicate more efficiently in the CD38(+) subset, although viral adsorption rates were similar between both subsets. Thus, the differential susceptibility of CD4(+) T cells to M(-) and T-tropic HIV-1 was associated with their surface expression of CD38.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The present study was designed to compare the absolute myocardial blood flow (MBF) after intravenous dipyridamole infusion with that during dobutamine-atropine administration in normal healthy male volunteers. BACKGROUND Both safety and usefulness of dobutamine-atropine stress in myocardial perfusion imaging have been reported. However, no information exists on whether the magnitude ofhyperemia achieved with dipyridamole and dobutamine-atropine is comparable. METHODS Myocardial blood flow was measured with positron emission tomography and 15O-labeled water in 20 healthy young men (23 +/- 3 years) 1) at baseline, 2) after dipyridamole infusion (0.56 mg/kg over 4 min), and 3) during dobutamine (40 microg/kg/min) and atropine (0.25 to 1.0 mg) infusion. RESULTS The MBF was significantly increased during dipyridamole infusion and during dobutamine-atropine stress compared with at rest (4.33 +/- 1.23 and 5.89 +/- 1.58 vs. 0.67 +/- 0.16 ml/min/g, respectively, p < 0.0001). Moreover, dobutamine-atropine infusion produced greater MBF compared with dipyridamole (p = 0.0011), while coronary vascular resistance did not differ significantly after dipyridamole administration and during dobutamine-atropine infusion (17.6 +/- 7.9 vs. 18.6 +/- 5.6 mm Hg/[ml/min/g], respectively). CONCLUSIONS Near maximal coronary vasodilatation caused by dipyridamole is attainable using dobutamine and atropine in young healthy volunteers. Dobutamine in conjunction with atropine is no less effective than dipyridamole in producing myocardial hyperemia.
