Abstract
Circulating antibody was detected by an indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT) in the serum of sheep infected experimentally with Eperythrozoon ovis. Antibodies were first detected 15 to 32 days after infection with E ovis and titres peaked at 41 days. This antibody may be associated, at least in part, with protection against infection with E ovis since the initial increase in antibody titre coincided with a fall in the primary parasitaemia. A role for antibody is suggested further by the fact that the prepatent period of infection was prolonged by one day and the parasitaemia initially remained at low levels in infected sheep protected by passively transferred hyperimmune serum. Moreover, following primary infection, acquired immunity was manifest by a lack of parasitaemia following challenge infections while increased IFA titres were observed. No evidence of opsonic activity was observed in an in vitro erythrophagocytosis test in that neither mouse macrophages nor sheep monocytes phagocytosed E ovis infected or uninfected erythrocytes sensitised with hyperimmune serum.

Abstract
Ten male patients selected as having sleep apnea predominantly of the obstructive type associated with the supine sleep position on their evaluation night were trained for 1 additional night to avoid the back sleep position by wearing a gravity-activated position monitor/alarm on the chest. This device emitted an auditory signal if the patient remained supine for more than 15 s. The number of apneic events was significantly reduced, as were the number of episodes of significant O2 desaturation. While wearing the alarm, the apnea index of seven patients remained within or near normal limits. On a follow-up night, with only instructions to maintain the lateral decubitus posture, five patients remained significantly improved. Sleep position training may be appropriate as a single or interim treatment for a significant number of sleep apnea patients who have position-related obstruction.

Abstract
Specific IgG anti-Babesia antibodies could be detected by an ELISA test in the serum of adoptively immunized mice which subsequently were infected with Babesia microti. Initially, higher IgG antibody levels were present in the recipients of either untreated immune spleen cells or mitomycin C-treated immune spleen cells compared with the values in control mice which received the infection alone. Subsequently, a marked anamnestic response occurred only in mice which received untreated immune spleen cells and not in the recipients of mitomycin C-treated cells, demonstrating a requirement for proliferation of B memory cells in the anamnestic response. When mice were injected with either T or B enriched spleen cell subpopulations and infected with B. microti, the anamnestic antibody response in each animal correlated well with protection against infection. The stimulation of the adoptively transferred immune spleen cells in recipient mice by injection of B. microti antigen fractions prepared by DEAE cellulose chromatography increased the level of antibody production and protection against infection in these mice. A highly significant correlation between these two parameters could be demonstrated for certain antigen fractions.

Abstract
Protection against a primary Babesia microti infection in mice, induced by the adoptive transfer of immune spleen cells, was abolished when the immune spleen cells were treated with mitomycin C prior to transfer. Since mitomycin C treatment prevents the replication of lymphocytes without affecting other cell functions, these results would suggest that the transferred cells required proliferation in the recipient mice before they could exert their protective effect, and this excludes the already differentiated antibody-forming cells (AFC's), macrophages and sensitised helper T cells. This was partly supported by the finding that Sephadex G-10 non-adherent immune cells, depleted of macrophages and AFC's, still conferred a strong protection after transfer. However, the Sephadex G-10 adherent cells, on a cell to cell basis, initially conferred a better protection against B. microti than did the non-adherent cells or unfractionated immune spleen cells. The possibility of the retention of an intermediate B memory cell type on the Sephadex G-10 columns and the suppression of antibody production are discussed in view of these results.

Abstract
Protection against infection with Babesia microti in mice was passively transferred with either serum or cells. Immune spleen cells were more effective than were immune mesenteric lymph node (MLN) cells in reducing parasitaemias in recipient mice, and the level of protection correlated with the donor to recipient ratio rather than with the number of cells transferred. Protection against primary infection in recipient mice was adoptively transferred by nylon wool adherent, B cell enriched subpopulations of spleen cells. In contrast, higher peak parasitaemias were apparent in mice which received nylon wool non-adherent, T enriched spleen cells in comparison with the control mice. However, if the recipient mice were reinfected, control of this second infection was greatest in the recipients of the T enriched cell subpopulation. Treatment of the protective nylon wool adherent, B cell subpopulation with anti-theta serum and complement abolished both the protective effect and the anamnestic antibody response in the recipient mice. This suggested that primed T cells controlled the expression of the protective antibody response by primed B cells.

Abstract
The concentrations of serum proteins (beta 1, beta 2, gamma, alpha 1, alpha 2 globulins and albumin) and absolute numbers of eosinophils, neutrophils and lymphocytes were examined in 64 naturally infected horses and ponies in which the number of larvae of Strongylus vulgaris in the cranial mesenteric artery and the severity of the lesion of verminous arteritis could be determined. The horses were grouped according to the number of larvae found and the severity of the arteritis. The results demonstrated that, although some significant deviation from a random distribution occurred in certain of the values (chi 2 test), there was considerable individual variation in the values obtained for individual animals within groups and overlap of the range of values between groups. Also the number of larvae present in the artery did not necessarily accurately reflect the severity of the arterial lesion. Thus, the parameters examined could not be used reliably to estimate the intensity of infection with S vulgaris in an individual animal.

Abstract
To investigate the dream characteristics associated with a major life change, 29 women (ages 30-55) undergoing divorce were studied six nights in a sleep laboratory. The group was stratified on a self-report depression scale (the Beck Depression Inventory) into a depressed (N = 19, mean = 23.2) and nondepressed (N = 10, mean = 8.2) group and compared to a nondepressed married group who had never considered divorce. The dreams of those divorcing without major mood upset were longer and dealt with a wider time frame than those of the other two groups. They also dealt with marital status issues which were absent in the dreams of the depressed group. On follow-up those who had been depressed showed positive dream changes in mood, dreamlike quality, and identification of dream self with the marital role. The study suggests that some dream characteristics respond adaptively during life changes but that this is delayed when subjects are depressed. This raises the possibility of a corrective intervention for such persons.

Abstract
Infection with the gastrointestinal nematode, Nematospiroides dubius, induced resistance to a concurrent infection with Babesia microti in mice. This enhanced resistance to B. microti occurred during infection with the larval, rather than the adult stages of N. dubius. Splenectomy or the injection of carrageenan or silica abrogated the protective effect against B. microti induced by infection with N. dubius. Peritoneal macrophages harvested from infected mice produced inhibition of the development of B. microti in vitro. This inhibition was greatest using macrophages harvested from mice recovered from infection with B. microti and from mice infected with the larval stages of N. dubius. Also, supernatants harvested from cultures of macrophages from N. dubius-infected mice suppressed B. microti development in vitro.

Abstract
Proliferation in vitro of peripheral blood lymphocytes both from horses infected with Strongylus vulgaris and from helminth-free ponies was observed in the presence of extracts of the fourth and fifth stage larvae and adults of S. vulgaris. In addition, S. vulgaris extracts induced transformation in cultures of peripheral blood lymphocytes from sheep and dogs and in mouse spleen cell cultures. Nylon wool non-adherent, T cell enriched fractions of lymphocytes from both mice and horses were stimulated by the S. vulgaris larval mitogen while no proliferation was observed in cultures containing nylon wool adherent, B cell enriched fractions. Macrophage co-operation appeared not to be necessary for S. vulgaris mitogen-induced transformation of spleen cells. The S. vulgaris mitogen stimulated a subpopulation of mouse spleen cells different from those responsive to PHA, Con A and LPS. These cells might be T helper cells since B cells were stimulated to proliferate in the presence of both T cells and S. vulgaris larval mitogen. In addition, the supernatant of in vitro cultured larvae of S. vulgaris induced slight, but significant transformation of equine peripheral blood lymphocytes. Therefore, it is possible that the S. vulgaris mitogen released by both viable parasites and degenerating larvae might induce T cell dependent production of immunoglobulin in vivo and account for the beta-globulinaemia, of which IgG(T) is a major component, in S vulgaris infected horses.

Abstract
The in vitro transformation of lymphocytes in the presence of antigen was used to assay the response of lambs to antigens of Haemonchus contortus. Neither uninfected lambs nor lambs infected with H. contortus up to 9 weeks of age developed in vitro lymphocyte responsiveness to antigen. A slight and transient increase in reactivity was demonstrable in some of the infected lambs when these were reinfected with H. contortus at 26 weeks of age. This lack of responsiveness could be modulated through the exposure of lambs, early in neonatal life, to multiple parenteral injections of soluble third stage larval antigen of H. contortus. Thus, antigen specific responses were apparent in the lymphocytes from 21-week-old lambs if these were injected with antigen when 2 to 17 weeks of age. In particular, marked antigen specific reactivity developed in 19- or 24-week-old lambs if such lambs were injected with antigen on five occasions over the first 6 weeks of life and subsequently infected with H. contortus when 7 weeks old. This responsiveness was enhanced when the lambs were reinfected with H. contortus at 26 weeks of age.

Abstract
Specific antigen-induced lymphocyte transformation in vitro and haemagglutinating antibody responses were absent from lambs infected with Haemonchus contortus. However, when lambs were injected with soluble third stage larval antigen of H. contortus, given on five occasions during the first 6 weeks of life, specific antigen-induced lymphocyte transformation and haemagglutinating antibodies were induced to the antigen. In particular, a periparturient increased susceptibility to infection and the resultant presence of heavy infections with H. contortus in ewes appeared to prime their lambs to respond and marked lymphocyte transformation was observed in antigen injected lambs born of heavily infected ewes. The enhancement of this response was associated with the colostral transfer of as yet unidentified factors. The superimposition of an infection with H. contortus in lambs which had been stimulated to respond to antigen, suppressed the in vitro responsiveness of their lymphocytes. Although individual variation was apparent, a direct correlation between the presence of in vitro antigen-induced lymphocyte transformation to third stage larval antigen and susceptibility to infection occurred.

Abstract
Sinclair (S-1) miniature swine were given access to a mixture of ethanol and beer for three years. Control swine were fed an isocaloric diet with corn starch substituted for ethanol. Both groups had free access to tap water. The alcohol group consumed about 4 g ethanol/kg/day (about 50% of their caloric intake) resulting in plasma ethanol concentrations of about 100 mg/dl. Brain membranes were prepared for analysis of neurotransmitter receptor binding, membrane lipid composition and physical properties. Receptor studies demonstrated an increase in the binding of 3H-GABA to cortical and cerebellar membranes from the alcoholic pigs as compared to control. Binding of 3H-ligands to muscarine cholinergic, beta-adrenergic, alpha-adrenergic, dopamine and benzodiazepine receptors was not changed by chronic ethanol ingestion. These results are similar to those obtained in studies of human alcoholics by other investigators. The cholesterol content of myelin and synaptic plasma membranes was not altered by ethanol consumption. The fluorescence polarization of diphenylhexatriene, a measure of membrane order, did not detect any differences in the membranes from control or alcohol-treated swine either before or after in vitro exposure to ethanol. These results are different from those reported for rodents after short-term ethanol treatments and emphasize the importance of evaluating different models of experimental alcoholism.

Abstract
Lactation in sheep and mice was associated with a marked increase in susceptibility to newly acquired infection with Haemonchus contortus and Nematospiroides dubius, respectively. In sheep this increased susceptibility to infection with H. contortus occurred in late pregnancy and during lactation and was seen when the ewes were infected with both a single large dose of infective larvae and a "trickle" infection of 200 and 400 infective larvae of H. contortus given weekly for 14 weeks. Nonlactating ewes whose lactation had been terminated were able to reject the parasites which had been acquired in late pregnancy. A relaxation in the protective immune response was evident in immunized mice infected during lactation with N. dubius. However, despite this periparturient relaxation of immunity mice were capable of inducing a marked passive transfer of immunity to their offspring. Thus, neonatal mice born of mothers one or two months after the end of the immunizing schedule were protected against infection with N. dubius at 12 or 20 days of age.

Abstract
Three, six-month-old dogs were infected with 2,000 eggs of Toxocara canis. Three weeks after infection 15 immature adult parasites were found in the intestine of the dog which had been treated with high doses of corticosteroids (2 ml of Opticortenol S given every four days) while no parasites were found in the intestine of the dog treated with repeated injections of 0.3 ml Opticortenol S or in the untreated control dog. The increased susceptibility to infection with T. canis in the dog treated with high doses of corticosteroids was associated with a decrease in in vitro lymphocyte responsiveness to the mitogen concanavalin A and pokeweed mitogen and with a complete suppression of the eosinophilia that was seen 10 days after infection in the untreated control dog.

Abstract
The survey was performed to study prevalence and intensity of parasitic infection in goats. Fecal samples were examined from 336 goats in southeastern Pennsylvania and northern Maryland. On the basis of fecal egg, oocyst, and larval counts, the following results were obtained. Eimerian oocysts were found in 100% of the fecal samples and the greatest fecal oocyst counts were found in goats under 6 months of age. Strongyle eggs and Strongyloides eggs were present in 76% and 20%, respectively, of the samples. Moniezia eggs were found in 9%, Trichuris eggs in 4%, and Nematodirus eggs in 1% of the samples. Twenty of 24 flocks examined for Muellerius capillaris were infected with this parasite. In these 20 flocks, 83% of the goats examined were infected with the parasite. Skrjabinema caprae infections were found.

Abstract
Normal mice were protected against infection with metacestodes of Taenia taeniaeformis when administered intestinal, colostral or serum immunoglobulins obtained from adult mice previously orally infected with the parasitie. The protective capacity of these preparations was found to be associated mainly with IgA of colostrum and intestinal secretions and IgG of serum. The removal of IgA and IgG from immune colostrum and serum, respectively, abolished the protective effect. Neonatal mice were protected against infection with T. taeniaeformis when fed purified colostral IgA and serum IgG from immune donors. The intraduodenal injection of intestinal IgA from immune donors into 4-week-old mice passively protected the recipients against infection with T. taeniaeformis, but intestinal IgG from immune donors had no protective effect when given in this manner. The protective capacity of IgA and IgG was largely eliminated by prior absorption with T. taeniaeformis antigen or hatched, activated oncospheres of T. taeniaeformis.

Abstract
In dogs following crush injury to the lumbar sympathetic trunk, reflex vasoconstriction reappears in 4-6 months but the normal vasodilator response to oxytocin does not return even 12 months after crush. Histochemical examination of the walls of the blood vessels shows that division or crush of the lumbar sympathetic trunk or removal of terminal ganglia leads to decentralization, not denervation of the blood vessels. True denervation follows division or crush of the sciatic and femoral nerves. Following recovery from sciatic or femoral crush the pattern of peripheral innervation appears histochemically normal. However, there is no return of the normal vasodilator response to oxytocin. It is concluded that a normal response to oxytocin does not return even after long-term recovery from sympathetic injury, nor does its effect depend on a normal pattern of peripheral adrenergic innervation, but on an unknown more central activity of the sympathetic nervous system.

Abstract
Altogether 406 infants with neural tube defects born in Cardiff between 1956-71 were investigated for evidence of space-time clustering and 100 similarly affected infants, together with matched controls born in Cardiff between 1964-66 were investigated for evidence of spatial clustering. No evidence of excessive prevalence in either dimension was observed.

Abstract
Eighteen infants with neural tube defects occurring in 979 births over five years in a small Wiltshire town were investigated for evidence of spatial epidemicity. Applying a method not used previously in the study of these defects, clustering was confirmed, a critical distance between cases of up to 100 metres giving a highly significant result (P = 0·001), and with one exception the observed number of pairs significantly exceeds the expected number (P < 0·01) even up to 1,000 metres.

Abstract
Data are presented from the South Wales Congenital Malformation Survey (92,982 births 1964-6 inclusive) showing that within areas in South Wales there exists an inverse relation between previous spontaneous abortion rate and the prevalence at birth of neural tube defect (anencephaly or spina bifida cystica or both). This relation is independent of social class, parity, and maternal age, and is not likely to be explained by area differences in accuracy of reporting previous spontaneous abortions. On the basis of these findings a hypothesis is advanced which proposes that the incidence of neural tube defects is uniform throughout South Wales and that the present substantial and relatively stable differences in area prevalence are controlled by small area differences in mortality of malformed embryos. This would seem to suggest that factors initiating the malformation are genetic and that any related environmental factors exert their effect on already abnormal fetuses by influencing, in one way or another, their capacity to survive.

Abstract
A descriptive epidemiological study of simple hypospadias-that is, hypospadias without coexisting malformation outside the genital system-in a birth population of 46,927 singleton males and 1,013 twin males showed that the condition was significantly more common (P < 0.001) in uniovular twin males than in either singleton or binovular twin males. Also the temporal distribution of dates of conception had a significant cyclic pattern for each year of the study. Both observations are thought to support the view that gonadotrophin levels at stage 3 sexual organogenesis play an important part in normal masculinization of male external genitalia.

Abstract
The mean annual prevalence at birth of congenital malformations of the central nervous system for the three years 1964-6 in 48 local authority areas in South Wales was negatively correlated (r = -0.402, P<0.01) with estimates of the mean total hardness of the related water supplies. The mean annual perinatal mortality rate from anencephalus for the five years 1963-7 in 58 county boroughs in England and Wales was also negatively correlated with estimates of the mean total hardness (r = -0.220, P>0.05) and calcium content (r = -0.289, P<0.05) of the related water supplies. It is concluded that the relationship between these associations may well be secondary. Analytical epidemiological studies of the association are called for.
