Abstract
Multiple recurrent cardiac myxomas are quite rare in clinical practice. A young male patient had four myxoma occurrences, twice in the left atrium and twice in the left ventricle. He had no medical history of cardiovascular diseases, familial cardiac neoplasm, or endocrinopathy. He underwent surgical resection four times. Genetic analysis revealed a heterozygous base pair mutation in the gene of protein kinase A regulatory subunit 1α (PRKAR1A) on chromosome 17 in both peripheral blood mononuclear cells and myxoma tissues. Regular postoperative examinations are recommended for patients with cardiac myxoma.

Abstract
Background: Interleukin (IL)-37, also called IL1F7, is a natural inhibitor of inflammatory and immune responses. It is involved in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). This study aimed to investigate the role of IL1F7 gene polymorphism in RA susceptibility in a large cohort of patients. Methods: Five selected single-nucleotide polymorphisms in IL1F7 genes (rs2723186, rs3811046, rs4241122, rs4364030, and rs4392270) were genotyped by TaqMan Allelic Discrimination in Northern Chinese Han population. The allele and the genotype were compared between patients with RA and healthy controls. Association analyses were performed on the entire data set and on different RA subsets based on the status of the anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide antibody and the rheumatoid factor by logistic regression, adjusting for age and gender. Results: Trend associations were detected between rs2723186, rs4241122, rs4392270, and RA in Stage I (160 patients with RA; 252 healthy controls). Further validation in Stage II comprised 730 unrelated patients with RA (mean age: 54.9 ± 12.6 years; 81.6% females) and 778 unrelated healthy individuals (mean age: 53.5 ± 15.7 years; 79.5% females). No significant differences in the distributions of alleles and genotypes were observed between the case and control groups in both the entire set and the different RA subsets. Disease activity and age of RA onset were also not associated with genotype distributions. Conclusion: IL1F7 gene polymorphism does not significantly influence RA susceptibility in the Northern Chinese Han population.

Abstract
Interleukin (IL)-22 regulates tissue inflammation and repair. Here we report participation of the liver in IL-22-mediated cardiac repair after acute myocardial infarction (MI). Methods: We induced experimental MI in mice by ligation of the left ascending artery and evaluated the effect of IL-22 on post-MI cardiac function and ventricular remodeling. Results: Daily subcutaneous injection of 100 µg/kg mouse recombinant IL-22 for seven days attenuated adverse ventricular remodeling and improved cardiac function in mice at 28 days after left anterior descending coronary artery ligation-induced MI. Pharmacological inhibition of signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT3) muted these IL-22 activities. While cardiomyocyte-selective depletion of STAT3 did not affect IL-22 activities in protecting post-MI cardiac injury, hepatocyte-specific depletion of STAT3 fully muted these IL-22 cardioprotective activities. Hepatocyte-derived fibroblast growth factor (FGF21) was markedly increased in a STAT3-dependent manner following IL-22 administration and accounted for the cardioprotective benefit of IL-22. Microarray analyses revealed that FGF21 controlled the expression of cardiomyocyte genes that are involved in cholesterol homeostasis, DNA repair, peroxisome, oxidative phosphorylation, glycolysis, apoptosis, and steroid responses, all of which are responsible for cardiomyocyte survival. Conclusions: Supplementation of IL-22 in the first week after acute MI effectively prevented left ventricular dysfunction and heart failure. This activity of IL-22 involved crosstalk between the liver and heart after demonstrating a role of the hepatic STAT3-FGF21 axis in IL-22-induced post-MI cardiac protection.

Abstract
The thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP)/TSLP receptor (TSLPR) axis is involved in multiple inflammatory immune diseases, including coronary artery disease (CAD). To explore the causal relationship between this axis and CAD, we performed a three-stage case-control association analysis with 3,628 CAD cases and 3,776 controls using common variants in the genes TSLP, interleukin 7 receptor (IL7R), and TSLPR. Three common variants in the TSLP/TSLPR axis were significantly associated with CAD in a Chinese Han population [rs3806933T in TSLP, Padj = 4.35 × 10-5, odds ratio (OR) = 1.18; rs6897932T in IL7R, Padj = 1.13 × 10-7, OR = 1.31; g.19646A>GA in TSLPR, Padj = 2.04 × 10-6, OR = 1.20]. Reporter gene analysis demonstrated that rs3806933 and rs6897932 could influence TSLP and IL7R expression, respectively. Furthermore, the "T" allele of rs3806933 might increase plasma TSLP levels (R2 = 0.175, P < 0.01). In a stepwise procedure, the risk for CAD increased by nearly fivefold compared with the maximum effect of any single variant (Padj = 6.99 × 10-4, OR = 4.85). In addition, the epistatic interaction between TSLP and IL33 produced a nearly threefold increase in the risk of CAD in the combined model of rs3806933TT-rs7025417TT (Padj = 3.67 × 10-4, OR = 2.98). Our study illustrates that the TSLP/TSLPR axis might be involved in the pathogenesis of CAD through upregulation of mRNA or protein expression of the referenced genes and might have additive effects on the CAD risk when combined with IL-33 signaling.

Abstract
Individuals with schizophrenia have higher mortality rates than the population at large. General mortality rates have declined in developed countries since the early 1970s, extending average lifespan by nearly a decade. This review of eight longitudinal studies of mortality in schizophrenia found that the mean standardized mortality ratio (SMR, a measure of mortality rate in schizophrenia compared to the general population) increased 37%, from 2.2 in the pre-1970s studies to 3.0 in the post-1970s reports. Major changes in societal stigma, healthcare, and economic policy are urgently warranted to ensure that this vulnerable segment of the population participates in the longevity revolution.

Abstract
Strategies to build a larger workforce of physicians dedicated to research on aging are needed. One method to address this shortage of physician scientists in geriatrics is short-term training in aging research for early-stage medical students. The authors examined the effects of two summer research training programs, funded by the National Institutes of Health, on medical students' attitudes toward aging, using the Carolina Opinions on Care of Older Adults (COCOA). The programs combined mentored research, didactics, and some clinical exposure. In a sample of 134 participants, COCOA scores improved significantly after completion of the research training program. There was a significant interaction of gender, such that female students had higher baseline scores than males, but this gender difference in COCOA scores was attenuated following the program. Four of the six COCOA subscales showed significant improvement from baseline: early interest in geriatrics, empathy/compassion, attitudes toward geriatrics careers, and ageism.

Abstract
Loneliness is a highly prevalent experience in schizophrenia. Theoretical models developed in the general population propose that loneliness is tantamount to a feeling of being unsafe, is accompanied by enhanced environmental threat perception, and leads to poor physical, emotional, and cognitive functioning. Previous research has reported that loneliness is associated with poorer physical and emotional health in schizophrenia; however, few studies have directly compared loneliness and its correlates in persons with schizophrenia and non-psychiatric comparison subjects. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate similarities and differences in the construct of loneliness, the equivalency of the measurement of this construct, and similarities and differences in the pattern of external correlates of loneliness between schizophrenia and non-psychiatric comparison groups. The third version of the University of California, Los Angeles Loneliness Scale (UCLA-3) was administered to 116 individuals with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder and 106 non-psychiatric comparison subjects. Additional clinical and positive psychological measures were collected, as well as demographic characteristics of the two groups. Multiple groups confirmatory factor analysis revealed that the UCLA-3 was best characterized by a bifactor model in which all items loaded on a general loneliness dimension as well as one of two orthogonal method factors reflecting item wording in both groups. Furthermore, the UCLA-3 exhibited invariant measurement of these latent constructs across groups. Mean levels of loneliness were nearly a standard deviation higher in the schizophrenia group. Nonetheless, the overall pattern and strength of correlates were largely similar across groups, with loneliness being positively associated with depression, anxiety, and perceived stress, and negatively correlated with mental well-being, happiness, and resilience. Subtle differences in correlates of age, optimism, and satisfaction with life were found. Overall, loneliness appears to be distinct from other schizophrenia-related deficits and operates similarly across schizophrenia and NC groups, suggesting that theoretical models of loneliness developed in the general population may generalize to schizophrenia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The serum level of osteoprotegerin (encoded by OPG or TNFRSF11B) was previously shown to be increased in patients with ischemic stroke. A single nucleotide polymorphism rs3134069 in the TNFRSF11B gene was previously associated with ischemic stroke in a population of diabetic patients in Italy. It remains to be determined whether rs3134069 is associated with ischemic stroke in the general population or populations without diabetes. MATERIALS AND METHODS We genotyped rs3134069 and performed a case-control association study to test whether rs3134069 is associated with ischemic stroke in 2 independent Chinese Han populations, including a China-Central population with 1629 cases and 1504 controls and a China-Northern population with 1206 cases and 720 controls. RESULTS rs3134069 showed significant association with ischemic stroke in the China-Central population (P = 9.24 × 10-3, odds ratio [OR] = 1.50). The association was replicated in the independent China-Northern population (P = 2.45 × 10-4, OR = 1.53). The association became more significant in the combined population (P = 7.09 × 10-6, OR = 1.41). The associations remained significant in the male population, female population, and population without type 2 diabetes. Our expression quantitative trait loci analysis found that the minor allele C of rs3134069 was significantly associated with a decreasedexpression level of TNFRSF11B (P = .002). CONCLUSIONS This study demonstrates that rs3134069 in TNFRSF11B increases risk of ischemic stroke by decreasing TNFRSF11B expression.

Abstract
Background and Objectives Childhood socioeconomic status (cSES) is found to predict later-life cognitive abilities, yet the mechanisms underlying these associations remain unclear. The objective of this longitudinal study was to examine the direct and indirect paths through which cSES influences late midlife cognitive outcomes. Research Design and Methods Participants were 1,009 male twins in the Vietnam Era Twin Study of Aging (VETSA). At mean ages 20 and 62, participants completed a standardized test for general cognitive ability (GCA). The age 62 cognitive assessment also included in-person tests of processing speed, episodic memory, abstract reasoning, working memory, verbal fluency, visual-spatial ability, and executive functions. At mean age 56, participants were interviewed regarding their own and their parents’ education and occupation, and completed questionnaires about cognitive leisure activities and sociodemographic information. Multiple mediation analyses were conducted to examine the direct path effects and indirect path effects of cSES through age 20 GCA, adult SES, and cognitive leisure activities on seven cognitive outcomes at age 62, adjusting for age, ethnicity, and non-independence of observations. Results Total (direct plus indirect) effects were significant for all measures with the exception of executive functions. Men from lower cSES backgrounds had poorer cognitive functioning in late midlife. The direct effect of cSES was partially mediated for abstract reasoning, and was fully mediated for the remaining six cognitive outcomes. Total indirect effects accounted for at least half of the total effects in each model, with paths through age 20 GCA explaining most of the total indirect effects. Discussion and Implications cSES predicted cognitive functioning in late middle age Using multiple mediation models, we show that lower cSES predicts poorer cognition in late midlife primarily through young adult cognitive ability and to a lesser extent through SES in adulthood and engagement in cognitively stimulating activities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS Diabetes mellitus (DM) has been demonstrated to have a strong association with heart failure. Conventional echocardiographic analysis cannot sensitively monitor cardiac dysfunction in type I diabetic Akita hearts, but the phenotype of heart failure is observed in molecular levels during the early stages. METHODS Male Akita (Ins2WT/C96Y) mice were monitored with echocardiographic imaging at various ages, and then with conventional echocardiographic analysis and speckle-tracking based strain analyses. RESULTS With speckle-tracking based strain analyses, diabetic Akita mice showed changes in average global radial strain at the age of 12 weeks, as well as decreased longitudinal strain. These changes occurred in the early stage and remained throughout the progression of diabetic cardiomyopathy in Akita mice. Speckle-tracking showed that the detailed and precise changes of cardiac deformation in the progression of diabetic cardiomyopathy in the genetic type I diabetic Akita mice were uncoupled. CONCLUSIONS We monitored early-stage changes in the heart of diabetic Akita mice. We utilize this technique to elucidate the underlying mechanism for heart failure in Akita genetic type I diabetic mice. It will further advance the assessment of cardiac abnormalities, as well as the discovery of new drug treatments using Akita genetic type I diabetic mice.

Abstract
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common arrhythmia. In 2014, two new meta-GWAS identified 5 AF loci, including the NEURL locus, GJA1 locus, CAND2 locus, and TBX5 locus in the European ancestry populations and the NEURL locus and CUX2 locus in a Japanese population. The TBX5 locus for AF was reported by us in 2013 in the Chinese population. Here we assessed the association between AF and SNPs in the NEURL, GJA1, CAND2 and CUX2 loci in the Chinese Han population. We carried out a large case-control association study with 1,164 AF patients and 1,460 controls. Significant allelic and genotypic associations were identified between NEURL variant rs6584555 and GJA1 variant rs13216675 and AF. Significant genotypic association was found between CUX2 SNP rs6490029 and AF. No association was found between CAND2 variant rs4642101 and AF, which may be due to an insufficient power of the sample size for rs4642101. Together with our previous findings, seven of fifteen AF loci (<50%) identified by GWAS in the European ancestry populations conferred susceptibility to AF in the Chinese population, and explained approximately 14.5% of AF heritability. On the other hand, two AF loci identified in the Japanese population were both replicated in the Chinese population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the impact of childhood adversity and current (adulthood) resilience on mental and physical health and markers of metabolic function among adults with schizophrenia and nonpsychiatric comparison participants (NCs). METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional study of 114 participants with schizophrenia (DSM-IV-TR criteria) and 101 NCs aged 26-65 years during 2012-2017. Sociodemographic, clinical, and laboratory measures were examined. Childhood Trauma Questionnaire was used to retrospectively assess emotional abuse/neglect, physical abuse/neglect, and sexual abuse experienced during childhood. Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale was employed to measure resilience. RESULTS Persons with schizophrenia reported more severe childhood trauma, lower resilience, and worse mental and physical health and had worse metabolic biomarker levels than NCs. Trauma severity correlated with worse depression in the NCs (r = 0.34), but not in the schizophrenia group (r = 0.02). In both groups, trauma severity was associated with worse physical well-being, higher fasting insulin levels, and greater insulin resistance (P ≤ .02). Notably, resilience appeared to counteract effects of trauma and diagnosis on mental and physical health. The schizophrenia subgroup with high resilience and severe trauma reported mental and physical well-being and had glycosylated hemoglobin levels and insulin resistance scores that were comparable to those of NCs with low resilience and severe trauma. CONCLUSIONS To our knowledge, this is the first study to quantitatively assess effects of both childhood trauma and resilience in schizophrenia on health, notably metabolic function. Interventions to bolster resilience in the general population and in people with schizophrenia may improve outcomes for those with a history of childhood adversity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The relationship between trainer fidelity during a two-day suicide prevention program for counselors at crisis centers and counselors' behaviors during calls from individuals with suicidal thoughts was examined. METHODS The study used two data sets from a randomized control trial of a suicide prevention program delivered by counselors at 17 crisis centers who had previously received training (train-the-trainer [TTT] approach). One data set examined counselors' behaviors by silently monitoring calls (N=764) to the crisis lines, and one assessed adherence to manual content and competence in delivery among trainers (N=34) by coding training videotapes. Multilevel modeling was used to account for nested data. RESULTS Use of recommended behaviors by counselors was primarily related to trainers' competence in delivery of the program rather than adherence to the program content. CONCLUSIONS Trainer selection for competence may be particularly critical for group-based TTT programs involving experienced counselors and the use of experiential activities.

Abstract
The conversion of CO2 with CH4 into liquid fuels and chemicals in a single‐step catalytic process that bypasses the production of syngas remains a challenge. In this study, liquid fuels and chemicals (e.g., acetic acid, methanol, ethanol, and formaldehyde) were synthesized in a one‐step process from CO2 and CH4 at room temperature (30 °C) and atmospheric pressure for the first time by using a novel plasma reactor with a water electrode. The total selectivity to oxygenates was approximately 50–60 %, with acetic acid being the major component at 40.2 % selectivity, the highest value reported for acetic acid thus far. Interestingly, the direct plasma synthesis of acetic acid from CH4 and CO2 is an ideal reaction with 100 % atom economy, but it is almost impossible by thermal catalysis owing to the significant thermodynamic barrier. The combination of plasma and catalyst in this process shows great potential for manipulating the distribution of liquid chemical products in a given process.

Abstract
Background Idiopathic ventricular tachycardia (VT) is a type of cardiac arrhythmia occurring in structurally normal hearts. The heritability of idiopathic VT remains to be clarified, and numerous genetic factors responsible for development of idiopathic VT are as yet unclear. Variations in FGF12 (fibroblast growth factor 12), which is expressed in the human ventricle and modulates the cardiac Na+ channel NaV1.5, may play an important role in the genetic pathogenesis of VT. Methods and Results We tested the hypothesis that genetic variations in FGF12 are associated with VT in 2 independent Chinese cohorts and resequenced all the exons and exon–intron boundaries and the 5′ and 3′ untranslated regions of FGF12 in 320 unrelated participants with idiopathic VT. For population‐based case–control association studies, we chose 3 single‐nucleotide polymorphisms—rs1460922, rs4687326, and rs2686464—which included all the exons of FGF12. The results showed that the single‐nucleotide polymorphism rs1460922 in FGF12 was significantly associated with VT after adjusting for covariates of sex and age in 2 independent Chinese populations: adjusted P=0.015 (odds ratio: 1.54 [95% CI, 1.09–2.19]) in the discovery sample, adjusted P=0.018 (odds ratio: 1.64 [95% CI, 1.09–2.48]) in the replication sample, and adjusted P=2.52E‐04 (odds ratio: 1.59 [95% CI, 1.24–2.03]) in the combined sample. After resequencing all amino acid coding regions and untranslated regions of FGF12, 5 rare variations were identified. The result of western blotting revealed that a de novo functional variation, p.P211Q (1.84% of 163 patients with right ventricular outflow tract VT), could downregulate FGF12 expression significantly. Conclusions In this study, we observed that rs1460922 of FGF12 was significantly associated with VT and identified that a de novo variation of FGF12 may be an important genetic risk factor for the pathogenesis of VT.

Abstract
When the Veterans Crisis Line (VCL) was implemented, it was uncertain if veterans, and particularly older male veterans, would utilize the service. We examined VCL use by a growing group of veterans at increased risk for suicide: those aged 60 and older. Real-time clinical data were gathered from a weekly random sampling of calls. Approximately 25% of calls were from veterans aged 60 or older; over 80% reported benefit from the call. Several significant differences in presenting concerns between older and younger callers were found. Targeted outreach to encourage older veterans to use the VCL is suggested.

Abstract
Non-thermal plasma activation has been used to enable low-temperature water-gas shift over a Au/CeZrO4 catalyst. The activity obtained was comparable with that attained by heating the catalyst to 180 °C providing an opportunity for the hydrogen production to be obtained under conditions where the thermodynamic limitations are minimal. Using in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS), structural changes associated with the gold nanoparticles in the catalyst have been observed which are not found under thermal activation indicating a weakening of the Au-CO bond and a change in the mechanism of deactivation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The immune system plays an important role in driving the acute inflammatory response following myocardial ischaemia/reperfusion injury (MIRI). IL-21 is a pleiotropic cytokine with multiple immunomodulatory effects, but its role in MIRI is not known. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH Myocardial injury, neutrophil infiltration and the expression of neutrophil chemokines KC (CXCL1) and MIP-2 (CXCL2) were studied in a mouse model of MIRI. Effects of IL-21 on the expression of KC and MIP-2 in neonatal mouse cardiomyocytes (CMs) and cardiac fibroblasts (CFs) were determined by real-time PCR and ELISA. The signalling mechanisms underlying these effects were explored by western blot analysis. KEY RESULTS IL-21 was elevated within the acute phase of murine MIRI. Neutralization of IL-21 attenuated myocardial injury, as illustrated by reduced infarct size, decreased cardiac troponin T levels and improved cardiac function, whereas exogenous IL-21 administration exerted opposite effects. IL-21 increased the infiltration of neutrophils and increased the expression of KC and MIP-2 in myocardial tissue following MIRI. Moreover, neutrophil depletion attenuated the IL-21-induced myocardial injury. Mechanistically, IL-21 increased the production of KC and MIP-2 in neonatal CMs and CFs, and enhanced neutrophil migration, as revealed by the migration assay. Furthermore, we demonstrated that this IL-21-mediated increase in chemokine expression involved the activation of Akt/NF-κB signalling in CMs and p38 MAPK/NF-κB signalling in CFs. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS Our data provide novel evidence that IL-21 plays a pathogenic role in MIRI, most likely by promoting cardiac neutrophil infiltration.
