Mechanisms Accompanying Chromium Release from Concrete

The use of mineral additives from the power and metallurgy industries in the production of building materials still raises questions about the ecological safety of such materials. These questions are particularly associated with the release of heavy metals. The article presents research related to the leaching of chromium from concretes made of Portland cement CEM I and slag cement CEM III/B (containing 75% of granulated blast furnace slag). Concrete was evaluated for leaching mechanisms that may appear during tank test over the long term (64 days). It has been presented that the dominating process associated with the leaching of chromium from both types of concrete is surface wash-off. Between the 9th and 64th day of the test, leaching of Portland cement concrete can be diffusion controlled. It has been proven that the participation of slag in the composition of concrete does not affect the level of leaching of chromium into the environment from concrete.

Environmental and geotechnical suitability of recycling waste materials from plasterboard manufacturing

This paper presents the geotechnical and environmental suitability of recycling gypsum-based waste material produced from plasterboard manufacturing. Most of the current plasterboard manufacturing industries are dumping these wastes to landfills. Among the major impediments to recycling such waste are environmental concerns around using such recycled material, as well as proper and suitable places to use it. To investigate these, such a waste from an Australian plasterboard manufacturing company was collected and a series of geotechnical properties were tested to evaluate the materials' suitability for any engineering construction. It was found that the tested gypsum-based plasterboard materials are suitable to use as road subgrade, pipe bedding and pipe backfill material. To ascertain the environmental safety of using such material in regards to manual handling as well as contaminants' leaching into the surrounding environment, materials were thoroughly tested for more than a hundred different contaminants. Tests were conducted to evaluate both the contaminants' concentrations in the sample as well as the leaching behaviour of those contaminants. It was found that concentrations of the tested contaminants were either below the individual detection limit or the safe limit defined by the local regulatory authority.

Titanite-Containing Mineral Compositions and Their Chemical Treatment with Preparation of Functional Materials

The waste of apatite-nepheline ore processing was chosen as the material of study for the present investigation. The chemical and phase compositions have been analyzed and the route of the new technology has been developed. Treatment of the waste with diluted hydrochloric acid enables to separate apatite, nepheline, titano-magnetite minerals from titanite (CaSiTiO₅). The obtained titanite concentrate contains 30-32% of titanium dioxide. Interaction of titanite with hydrochloric acid under heating and stirring conditions results in calcium leaching. The titanite decomposition is accompanied by titanium and silica oxides precipitation. The resulting solid has been used as a precursor for the synthesis of functional materials. Mechanochemical activation of the precursor provides the structural and morphological disorder of the initial particles. Thermodynamic stability of activated particles is achieved by chemisorption or roasting.

Sorption and leaching of flucetosulfuron in soil

The adsorption-desorption and leaching of flucetosulfuron, a sulfonylurea herbicide, was investigated in three Indian soils. Freundlich adsorption isotherm described the sorption mechanism of herbicide with adsorption coefficients (K_f) ranging from 17.13 to 27.99 and followed the order: Clayey loam > Loam > Sandy loam. The K_f showed positive correlation with organic carbon (OC) (r = 0.910) and clay content (r = 0.746); but, negative correlation with soil pH (r = -0.635). The adsorption isotherms were S-type suggesting that herbicide adsorption was concentration dependent and increased with increase in concentration. Desorption followed the sequence: sandy loam > clayey loam > loam . Hysteresis (H) was observed in all the three soils with H < 1. Leaching of flucetosulfuron correlated positively with the soil pH; but, negatively with the OC content. Sandy loam soil (OC- 0.40%, pH -7.25) registered lowest adsorption and highest leaching of flucetosulfuron while lowest leaching was found in the loam soil (pH - 7.89, OC - 0.65%). The leaching losses of herbicide increased with increase in the rainfall intensity. This study suggested that the soil OC content, pH and clay content played important roles in deciding the adsorption-desorption and leaching behavior of flucetosulfuron in soils.

Accelerated carbonation technology granulation of industrial waste: Effects of mixture composition on product properties

The use of accelerated carbonation technology in combination with a granulation process was employed to produce aggregates from a variety of industrial wastes, which included municipal solid waste incineration fly ash and air pollution control residue, oil shale ash, cement kiln dust, and quarry fines that have been produced in Estonia. Focusing mainly on the effects produced by the content of municipal solid waste incineration ash in the admixtures, the granule compositions were varied in order to tailor granule properties on the basis of CO₂ uptake, strength development, leaching behaviour, microstructure, and morphology. All the steps involved in the accelerated carbonation technology granulation process, from mixing with additives to granulation and carbonation treatment, were carried out in the same apparatus - an Eirich EL1 intensive mixer/granulator. The amount of CO₂ that was bound ranged from 23 to 108 kg per tonne of waste. The granules that included the optimised mixture of municipal solid waste incineration air pollution control residue, oil shale ash, cement kiln dust, and ordinary Portland cement were characterised by the highest compressive strength (4.03 MPa) and water durability for the size range of 4-10 mm. In addition, the process was found to be effective in reducing alkalinity (pH < 11.5) and immobilising heavy metals (especially zinc) and chloride. The composition and properties of the respective waste materials and mechanisms associated with the characteristics of the resulting granules were also addressed.

Dissipation of fomesafen in fumigated, anaerobic soil disinfestation-treated, and organic-amended soil in Florida tomato production systems

BACKGROUND

Fumigated, anaerobic soil disinfestation-treated (ASD), and organic-amended soil management strategies have been investigated as potential methyl bromide (MBr) alternatives for controlling diseases, nematodes, and weeds in soil. Nutsedge and broadleaf weed control using fomesafen has been reported to be comparable to MBr in normal cropping systems. There is no information on the fate of fomesafen used in combination with alternative practices. In this study, the fate of fomesafen in these alternative systems was measured by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS-MS) following extraction using a modified Quick Easy Cheap Effective Safe (QuEChERS) method.

RESULTS

The reported half-life (DT₅₀ ) values for fomesafen in the top 15 cm of soil were from 62.9 to 107.3 days. The DT₅₀ values in organic-amended soil were higher than in ASD-treated soil in the top 15 cm. For all treatments, reductions in concentrations were positively correlated with lower redox potentials and organic matter content. Some leaching of fomesafen into the 16-30 cm zone was observed in all treatments.

CONCLUSIONS

The DT₅₀ values in this study were generally higher than those reported in previous studies performed at different locations. Due to increased losses of the herbicide and subsequent reduction in weed control, fomesafen is likely not to be suitable for effective weed control in systems using ASD techniques employing composted poultry litter and molasses. Integration of fomesafen using composted yard waste 1 (CYW1) and Soil Symphony Amendment (SSA) may result in acceptable weed control. Given that the soil was very sandy and the pH was higher than the pKa, fomesafen might leach deeper than 30 cm, particularly with the use of chemical soil fumigants (CSFs). © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry.

Immobilization of Radionuclide 133Cs by Magnesium Silicate Hydrate Cement

The radionuclide cesium (Cs) was solidified using magnesium silicate hydrate (M–S–H) cement. The influence of Cs⁺ on the reaction of the M–S–H gel system was evaluated by measuring the compressive strength and microscopic properties of the solidified body. By testing the impact resistance, leaching resistance and freeze–thaw resistance of the solidified body, the immobilizing ability of Cs⁺ by the M–S–H cement was analyzed. Results indicate that Cs⁺ only slightly affects the reaction process of the M–S–H gel system, and only slows down the transformation rate of Mg(OH)₂ into the M–S–H gel to a certain extent. The M–S–H cement exhibits superior performance in solidifying Cs⁺. Both the leaching rate and cumulative leach fraction at 42 d were considerably lower than the national requirements and better than the ordinary Portland cement-solidified body. The curing effect of the M–S–H cement on Cs⁺ is mainly physical encapsulation and chemisorption of hydration products.

Thiol-Affinity Immobilization of Casein-Coated Silver Nanoparticles on Polymeric Membranes for Biofouling Control

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have been widely studied for the control of biofouling on polymeric membranes due to their antimicrobial properties. However, nanoparticle leaching has posed a significant impediment against their widespread use. In this study, a one-step method of chemically embedding AgNPs on cellulose acetate (CA) membranes via their affinity to thiol group chemistry was investigated. The operational efficiency of the membranes was then determined via filtration and biofouling experiments. During filtration study, the average flux values of pure CA membranes was determined to be 11 ± 2 L/(m2·hr) (LMH), while membranes embedded with AgNPs showed significant increases in flux to 18 ± 2 LMH and 25 ± 9 LMH, with increasing amounts of AgNPs added, which is likely due to the NPs acting as pore formers. Leaching studies, performed both in dead-end and crossflow filtration, showed approximately 0.16 mg/L leaching of AgNPs after the first day of filtration, but afterwards the remaining chemically-attached AgNPs did not leach. Over 97% of AgNPs remained on the membranes after seven days of crossflow leaching filtration studies. Serratia marcescens were then used as target microorganisms in biofouling studies. It was observed that membranes embedded with AgNPs effectively suppressed the growth of Serratia marcescens, and specifically, membranes with AgNPs displayed a decrease in microbial growth by 59% and 99% as the amount of AgNP increased.

Obtaining Alumina from Kaolin Clay via Aluminum Chloride

A method of alumina production based on hydrochloric acid processing of kaolin clays from the East Siberian deposits was studied. Hydrochloric acid leaching was carried out at 160 °C. The leaching solution was subjected to a two-stage crystallization of aluminum chloride hexahydrate (ACH). The precipitated crystals were calcinated in air at a temperature above 800 °C to produce alumina. The main part of water and chlorine during thermal decomposition of ACH was removed at 400 °C. The influence of temperature and duration of ACH calcination on the residual chlorine content in alumina was studied. The optimal temperature of ACH calcination was 900 °C with a duration of 90 min. It was shown that the increase in calcination temperature contributed to the decrease in chlorine content in the final product. However, an increase in calcination temperature above 900 °C led to the transition of the well-soluble γ-Al₂O₃ phase to the insoluble α-Al₂O₃, which negatively affected the further electrolysis of aluminum. The size of alumina particles was not affected by the calcination mode. The rate of dissolution of the prototype Al₂O₃ in Na₃AlF₆ was higher than for the alumina obtained by the classical method. Alumina content, particle morphology, and particle size distribution for the obtained alumina were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and laser diffraction methods. The obtained alumina is suitable for aluminum production according to the studied characteristics.

Copper Analysis by Two Different Procedures of Sequential Extraction after Electrodialytic Remediation of Mine Tailings

The analysis of Cu distribution in pre-treated mine tailings after electrodialytic remediation was carried out by using two methods of sequential extraction. The initial content of copper in the tailings was 1109 mg Cu/kg of dry tailing, where close to 40% of the sample in weight corresponded to a soluble fraction. The tailing was treated with a leaching solution for 24 h. Three different solutions were tested: H2SO4 + HNO3 with pH = 1.9; H2SO4 + HNO3 with pH = 4.2; and NH4Cl 0.8 mol/L with pH = 5.5. After that, electrodialytic remediation experiments were carried out using an electric field of 2.7 V/cm for 15 days. The best performance for the complete cell was obtained with H2SO4 + HNO3 solutions, with a copper removal efficiency in the range of 62% to 67% and a current efficiency between 6% and 9%. The results of the remaining copper concentration between anode and cathode, from both procedures of sequential extraction, showed similar trends. The differences were mainly attributed to the use of different extractant solutions and extraction times. Soluble and exchangeable fractions were easily removed, with efficiencies higher than 80%. The lowest copper removal efficiency was obtained with NH4Cl 0.8 mol/L.

Geopolymer, Calcium Aluminate, and Portland Cement-Based Mortars: Comparing Degradation Using Acetic Acid

In this paper, we comparitvley studied acetic acid attacks on geopolymer (GP-M), calcium aluminate (CAC-M), and Portland cement (PC-M)-based mortars. Consequent formations of deteriorated or transition layers surrounding the unaltered core material was classified in these three mortars, according to different degradation levels depending on what binder type was involved. Apart from mass loss, hardness, and deterioration depth, their microstructural alterations were analyzed using test methods such as scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), and thermogravimetric analysis-differential scanning calorimeter (TGA-DSC), which showed the different mechanisms for each binder type. Elemental maps revealed the decalcification (PC-M and CAC-M) and depolymerization (GP-M) that occurred across the mortar sections. The mass loss, hardness, and porosity were the least affected for GP-M, followed by CAC-M. These results points out that geopolymer-based mortars have improved acid resistance, which can be used as a potential alternative to conventional cement concretes that have been exposed to agro-industrial environments.

The Influence of Zeolite (Sokyrnytsya Deposit) on the Physical and Chemical Resistance of a Magnesium Potassium Phosphate Compound for the Immobilization of High-Level Waste

The manuscript presents the results of the development of new material for high-level waste (HLW) management: the magnesium potassium phosphate (MKP) compound. The possibility of using zeolite (Sokyrnytsya deposit) to increase the mechanical, thermal, and hydrolytic resistance of this compound with immobilized HLW was studied. The main component of the used natural zeolite is a mineral of the clinoptilolite-heulandite series, and quartz, microcline, and clay minerals (illite, sepiolite, and smectite) are present as impurities. The compressive strength of the compound, containing at least 4.2 wt % zeolite, is about 25 MPa. Compound containing 28.6 wt % zeolite retains high compressive strength (at least 9.0 MPa), even after heat treatment at 450 °C. The adding of zeolite to the composition of the compound increases its hydrolytic stability, while the leaching rate of the mobile nuclides 137Cs and 90Sr decreases up to one order of values. Differential leaching rate of radionuclides from the compound containing 28.6 wt % zeolite is 2.6 × 10-7 for 137Cs, 2.9 × 10-6 for 90Sr, 1.7 × 10-9 for 239Pu, and 2.9 × 10-9 g/(cm2∙day) for 241Am. Thus, the properties of the resulting compound correspond to the requirements for solidified HLW in Russia.

Dynamic Effect of Fresh and Aged Biochar on the Behavior of the Herbicide Mesotrione in Soils

In this study, we assessed the sorption, dissipation, and leaching of the herbicide mesotrione in soil amended with fresh and field-aged biochars, when added to the soil. The aging process was performed by burying the fresh biochar at 10 cm depth in three soils located in different points across the USA [Wisconsin (ABC_WI), Idaho (ABC_ID), and South Carolina (ABC_SC)] for six months. ABC_ID and ABC_SC slightly increased the sorption of mesotrione in soils, whereas ABC_WI removed greater amounts of herbicide from the solution. This was attributed to differences in water-soluble components and metal content of this aged biochar. Consequently, the persistence of the herbicide in the amended soils with fresh biochar and ABC_ID and ABC_SC were similar to that in unamended soils, while ABC_WI slightly increased mesotrione half-life. Differences between treatments were detected in leaching studies although no direct relationship with the dissipation batch studies was observed. Mesotrione leaching could not be detected in soil columns amended with ABC_WI and was high for the rest of treatments. The outcomes from this work demonstrate that temporal variability of biochar sorption capacities due to soil exposure can occur altering mesotrione's behavior in biochar-amended soils.

Sorption and desorption of diuron on Typic Argiudoll, Oxic Argiudoll and on their clay fractions: environmental aspects

The sorption and desorption of diuron by soil samples from Horizons A and B (HA and HB) and by their different clay fractions were investigated, using two soil samples, classified as Typic Argiudoll and Oxic Argiudoll. The sorption and desorption curves were adjusted to the Freundlich model and evaluated by parameters K_f, K_d and K_oc. Based on the data of groundwater ubiquity score (GUS), leachability index (LIX) and hysteresis index (HI), the risk of groundwater pollution was evaluated. The K_d values obtained for soil samples were between 4.5 mL g^-1 (Oxic Argiudoll - HB) and 15.9 mL g^-1 (Typic Argiudoll - HA) and between 1.13 and 14.0 mL g^-1 for the different mineral fractions, whereas the K_oc values varied between 276 (Oxic Argiudoll - HB) and 462 (Typic Argiudoll - HA). According to the parameter GUS, only Oxic Argiudoll - HB presented leaching potential, and based on the LIX index this same soil presented the highest leaching potential. Some samples presented low LIX and GUS values, indicating no leaching potential, but none presented HI results indicative of hysteresis, suggesting weak bonds between diuron and the soil samples and, hence, the risk of groundwater pollution by diuron.

Comparison of the Characteristics of Fly Ash Generated from Bio and Municipal Waste: Fluidized Bed Incinerators

European solid waste incinerator plants still primarily use grate furnace technology, although circulating fluidized bed (CFB) technology is steadily expanding. Therefore, few investigations have reported on the environmental assessment of fly ash from fluidized incinerators. This research project aims to integrate information on fly ash derived from the combustion of municipal solid waste (FA1) and biomass (FA2) in fluidized bed incinerator facilities. Fly ash samples were comparatively analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) to study the mineralogy, morphology, total heavy metal content, and leaching behavior, respectively. The analysis revealed that the two types of fly ash differ in their characteristics and leaching behavior. The concentration of most of the heavy metals in both is low compared to the literature values, but higher than the regulatory limits for use as a soil conditioner, whereas the high contents of Fe, Cu, and Al suggest good potential for metal recovery. The leaching ability of most elements is within the inert waste category, except for Hg, which is slightly above the non-hazardous waste limit.

The Impact of Physical Properties on the Leaching of Potentially Toxic Elements from Antimony Ore Processing Wastes

This study reports on the assessment of the impact of antimony mine wastes from Xikuangshan (XKS) Antimony Mine in Lengshuijiang City, Hunan Province. We focus on the leaching of a number of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) from residues from the processing of antimony ore. The PTE content of ore processing waste and solutions generated by leaching experiments were determined for a suite of PTEs associated with the ore mineralization. These were Sb, As, Hg, Pb, Cd and Zn. As anticipated, high concentrations of the PTEs were identified in the waste materials, far exceeding the standard background values for soil in Hunan Province. For Sb and As, values reached >1800 mg·kg⁻¹ and >1200 mg·kg⁻¹, respectively (>600 and >90 times higher than the soil background). The leaching of Sb, As, Hg, Pb, Cd and Zn decreased with an increase in grain size and leachable portions of metal ranged between 0.01% to 1.56% of total PTE content. Leaching tests identified the release of PTEs through three stages: a. alkaline mineral dissolution and H⁺ exchanging with base cation; b. oxidation and acid production from pyrite and other reducing minerals; and c. the adsorption and precipitation of PTEs.

Modeling the mobility of glyphosate from two contrasting agricultural soils in laboratory column experiments

Glyphosate (GLP) currently is one of the most widely used herbicides worldwide. The persistence of GLP and its major metabolite, aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) in the environment has been described by other authors. This study was aimed at comparing the GLP and AMPA behavior in sandy and loamy sand soils after spiking with enhanced (445 µg g-1) concentrations of GLP in herbicide KLINIK® (Nufarm, Austria) and bioaugmentation followed by 40 days weathering and a consistent three-stage leaching in a laboratory column experiment. Soil samples were obtained from mineral topsoil (0-10 cm) within former agricultural lands where soil parent material was formed by glacigenic deposits. The total amount of GLP and AMPA collected during three leaching stages was significantly (p<.05) higher from columns with sandy soil, compared to loamy sand soil. Bioaugmentation resulted in considerably lower concentrations of AMPA in leachates, especially in the sets with sandy soil (p=.01). Leachates were tested using FTIR spectroscopy and Daphnia magna. Statistical analysis of the changes in Ntot, Ctot, K+, Mg2+, Al3+, Ca2+, Mn2+ and Fe3+ concentrations in soils after the leaching experiment revealed that the loamy sand soil was likely to be more sensitive to the addition of GLP and bioaugmentation than sandy soil.

A clay-based formulation of the herbicide imazaquin containing exclusively the biologically active enantiomer

BACKGROUND

Imazaquin is a chiral herbicide which displays high mobility in soils. Like other imidazolinones, imazaquin is available for use only as racemic mixture of its enantiomers. In this work, several clay materials were assayed as adsorbents of imazaquin, and then the most suitable material was selected to prepare a clay-based slow release imazaquin nanoformulation containing exclusively the biologically active R-enantiomer. Next, laboratory experiments were conducted to illustrate the benefits of using the clay-based R-imazaquin formulation over the free (non-supported) racemic herbicide or the free pure R-imazaquin enantiomer regarding its leaching behavior and bioefficacy.

RESULTS

The clay material selected as a carrier for R-imazaquin, hexadecyltrimethylammonium-saturated montmorillonite (SA-HDTMA), combined a high affinity for the herbicide and a high stability of the clay-herbicide adsorption complex. In a simulated scenario of high water input shortly after herbicide application, the clay-based R-imazaquin formulation displayed reduced leaching and increased bioefficacy compared to free racemic imazaquin and free R-imazaquin.

CONCLUSION

The new clay-R-imazaquin formulation prepared, besides avoiding the environmental impact caused by the application of the less active S-enantiomer, reduced the herbicide leaching losses and prolonged the herbicidal activity, by increasing the residence time of the herbicide in the topsoil. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry.

Selective Recovery of Zinc from Metallurgical Waste Materials from Processing Zinc and Lead Ores

A method for processing of metallurgical waste materials (chemically defined as sulfur-bearing zinc-ferric materials) produced by plants processing zinc ores and their concentrates is proposed. The method proposed is a combination of pyro- and hydrometallurgical treatments of the waste material. The crucial steps in the developed method include: roasting the material at 450 °C to generate sulfur dioxide (SO₂), absorption of SO₂ in an aqueous system to form sulfuric acid (IV), carbothermic decomposition of zinc ferrite compounds, and leaching of zinc from the roasted material using sulfuric (IV) acid. The method allows one to extract up to 40% of zinc from the waste material and, consequently, to generate a fraction of material with substantially higher content of iron oxides. The proposed method takes advantage of the presence of sulfur in the processed material which upon roasting is converted to sulfuric acid (IV)-a leaching agent for selective extraction of zinc. The properly adjusted pH of the aqueous medium in which the leaching process is carried out is the key factor determining the quantitative and selective separation of zinc. If the amount of sulfur in the processed material is insufficient, it may be supplemented by adding sulfuric acid (VI) to adjust the pH. The method proposed was tested at a laboratory scale and quarter industrial scale using the real samples taken from stockpiles in the vicinity of the plant processing zinc and lead ores in Poland. It may also work for any zinc-ferric materials from various sources.

pH-Dependent Leaching Characteristics of Major and Toxic Elements from Red Mud

This study analyzes the leaching behavior of elements from red mud (bauxite residue) at pH values ranging from 2 to 13. The leaching characteristics of metals and contaminated anions in five red mud samples produced by Bayer and combined processes were analyzed using the batch leaching technique following the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) Method 1313. In addition, the geochemical model of MINTEQ 3.1 was used to identify the leaching mechanisms of metals. The results showed that Ca, Mg, and Ba follow the cationic leaching pattern. Al, As, and Cr show an amphoteric leaching pattern. The leaching of Cl⁻ is unaffected by the pH. The maximum leaching concentration of the proprietary elements occurs under extremely acidic conditions (pH = 2), except for As. The leaching concentration of F⁻ reaches 1.4–27.0 mg/L in natural pH conditions (i.e., no acid or base addition). At the same pH level, the leaching concentrations of Pb, As, Cr, and Cu are generally higher from red mud produced by the combined process than that those of red mud from the Bayer process. The leaching concentration of these elements is not strongly related to the total elemental concentration in the red mud. Geochemical modeling analysis indicates that the leaching of metal elements, including Al, Ca, Fe, Cr, Cu, Pb, Mg, Ba, and Mn, in red mud are controlled by solubility. The leaching of these elements depended on the dissolution/precipitation of their (hydr)oxides, carbonate, or sulfate solids.

Assessment of Leaching Characteristics of Solidified Products Containing Secondary Alkaline Lead Slag

Reuse of waste is one of the main principles of sustainable development and circular economy. Secondary alkaline lead slag is a hazardous waste generated in the recycling process of lead-acid batteries that may be suitable in construction materials. The environmental impact of the use of lead slag as a partial replacement of fine aggregates in the cement-based stabilization/solidification (S/S) process for the preparation of concrete was studied in this paper. Solidified products containing 10%, 15%, 20%, and 25% slag were laboratory tested by unconfined compressive strength (UCS) analyses and the Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP). At the same time, the leachability of toxic elements from solidified products with a high percent of slag was evaluated under environmental conditions for during one year. The results of the UCS and TCLP indicated that utilization of this type of slag in cement-based applications may be justified with its controlled addition. However, the described application of the slag was disputed due to the high release of As under high alkaline environmental conditions. Eh-pH analyses and the geochemical modeling using the software PHREEQC were evaluated, as well as the mechanism of pollutant (Pb, As) immobilization (precipitation, adsorption) as a function of pH conditions.

Effects of freezing-thawing and wetting-drying on heavy metal leaching from biosolids

The goal of this study was to evaluate the effects of freezing-thawing and wetting-drying on heavy metals leaching from biosolids. Biosolid samples were irrigated with water at two flow rates and three flow stop events in 24 hr intervals. During the period of flow stop, biosolids were subjected to different temperatures, water contents, or freezing-thawing. Leachates were analyzed for heavy metals. The concentrations of metals in biosolids ranged from lower than detection limits (for Pb) to 1,039 mg/kg (for Zn). The leaching percentage of metals ranged from 0% (Pb, Ag, Cs) to 25% (Ni). Lower flow rate with longer residence time induced more metal leaching compared with higher flow rate with shorter residence time. At each flow rate, flow stop caused enhanced metal leaching. Higher drying temperature enhanced metal leaching. Water content or freezing-thawing had no significant effects on metal leaching. We expect that intermittent irrigation or rainfall would enhance the risk of metals leaching from biosolids after land application. However, freezing of biosolids during winter will likely not cause an enhanced leaching of metals in spring when biosolids and soils thaw. Application of biosolids in fall should therefore not cause enhanced leaching of metals out of land-applied biosolids. Quantifying indium with ion chromatography in hydro- and biohydrometallurgical leaching solutions

A methodology has been developed to chromatographically quantify indium in polymetallic (bio)hydrometallurgical processing solutions using the Dionex IonPac CS5A column and pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid eluent. Cu(II) and In(III) could be separated by elevating the column temperature to 45°C. The comparatively low stability constant of the In-eluent complex (log K₂  = 3.8) required typical leaching samples to be diluted in the eluent rather than acid or water to overcome ligand competition between components of the sample solution and the eluent. The methodology was applied to leachates from (bio)hydrometallurgical processing of oxidic flue dust residues and sulfidic zinc ores, where both are promising candidates for the recovery of indium from low grade ores and metallurgical wastes. Indium, ferrous iron, ferric iron, copper, zinc, nickel, and manganese concentrations could be simultaneously quantified. The method was found suitable for samples containing at least 0.25 mg/L indium and an iron to indium ratio of up to 100:1.

A Study on Tannery Sludge as a Raw Material for Cement Mortar

The paper analyses the properties (chemical and mineral composition, microstructure, density, etc.) of recycled tannery sludge (TS) and the possibilities for using it in cement mortar mixture. Mortar specimens containing 3–12% of tannery sludge by weight of cement and 3–9% of tannery sludge by weight of sand were tested. Flowability, density, ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV), flexural and compressive strength, water absorption and sorptivity of the mortar were analysed. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis of tannery sludge and mortar are presented. The tests revealed that replacement of 6% of cement with tannery sludge in the mix increased flexural and compressive strength and UPV values, whereas water absorption decreased. SEM and XRD analysis revealed that specimens with tannery sludge contained lower amounts of ettringite and higher amounts of portlandite; the obtained structure was denser and contained more calcium hydrosilicates (C-S-H). Chromium leaching values in cement mortars were found not to exceed the limit values set forth in Directive 2003/33/EC.

Rivers across the Siberian Arctic unearth the patterns of carbon release from thawing permafrost

High-latitude permafrost and peat deposits contain a large reservoir of dormant carbon that, upon warming, may partly degrade to CO₂ and CH₄ at site and may partly enter rivers. Given the scale and heterogeneity of the Siberian Arctic, continent-wide patterns of thaw and remobilization have been challenging to constrain. This study combines a decade-long observational record of ¹⁴C in organic carbon of four large Siberian rivers with an extensive ¹⁴C source fingerprint database into a statistical model to provide a quantitative partitioning of the fraction of fluvially mobilized organic carbon that specifically stems from permafrost and peat deposits, and separately for dissolved and particulate vectors, across the Siberian Arctic, revealing distinct spatial and seasonal system patterns in carbon remobilization.

Climate warming is expected to mobilize northern permafrost and peat organic carbon (PP-C), yet magnitudes and system specifics of even current releases are poorly constrained. While part of the PP-C will degrade at point of thaw to CO₂ and CH₄ to directly amplify global warming, another part will enter the fluvial network, potentially providing a window to observe large-scale PP-C remobilization patterns. Here, we employ a decade-long, high-temporal resolution record of ¹⁴C in dissolved and particulate organic carbon (DOC and POC, respectively) to deconvolute PP-C release in the large drainage basins of rivers across Siberia: Ob, Yenisey, Lena, and Kolyma. The ¹⁴C-constrained estimate of export specifically from PP-C corresponds to only 17 ± 8% of total fluvial organic carbon and serves as a benchmark for monitoring changes to fluvial PP-C remobilization in a warming Arctic. Whereas DOC was dominated by recent organic carbon and poorly traced PP-C (12 ± 8%), POC carried a much stronger signature of PP-C (63 ± 10%) and represents the best window to detect spatial and temporal dynamics of PP-C release. Distinct seasonal patterns suggest that while DOC primarily stems from gradual leaching of surface soils, POC reflects abrupt collapse of deeper deposits. Higher dissolved PP-C export by Ob and Yenisey aligns with discontinuous permafrost that facilitates leaching, whereas higher particulate PP-C export by Lena and Kolyma likely echoes the thermokarst-induced collapse of Pleistocene deposits. Quantitative ¹⁴C-based fingerprinting of fluvial organic carbon thus provides an opportunity to elucidate large-scale dynamics of PP-C remobilization in response to Arctic warming.
