Abstract
Soybean (Glycine max) is an important oil crop in agricultural production, but low phosphorus (P) availability limits soybean growth and production. Expansin is a family of plant cell wall proteins and involved in a variety of physiological processes, including cell division and enlargement, root growth and leaf development. To test the potential effects of expansins on crop production, we have developed soybean transgenic plants overexpressing a soybean β-expansin gene GmEXPB2, which was significantly induced by phosphate (Pi) starvation. The results indicated that constitutive overexpression of GmEXPB2 promoted leaf expansion, sequentially stimulated root growth and consequently resulted in improved P efficiency in the transgenic plants under P-limited conditions in hydroponics. In particular, when tested in calcareous (CS) and acid soils (AS), the two GmEXPB2 transgenic soybean lines showed above 25 and 40% increases in plant dry weight and P content, respectively to wild-type plants in low-P CS, but not in AS. To our knowledge, this is the first report in which improvement of P efficiency could be achieved through constitutive overexpression of an endogenous EXPB gene in soybean. These findings suggest that genetic modification of root and leaf traits might be a suitable strategy for improving crop production in low-P soils.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine whether electroacupuncture (EA) intervention combined with general anesthesia (GA) strategy can reduce early post-operative morbidity and medical costs in patients undergoing heart valve replacement operation under cardiopulmonary bypass. METHODS A total of 160 heart valve replacement surgery patients undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass were randomly divided into GA and EA + GA groups (n = 80 in each group). Patients of the GA group were given with intravenous injection of Fentanyl, Midazolam, Vecuronium Bromide, etc. and routine tracheal intubation. EA (3-4 Hz, 2.0-2.2 mA) was applied to bilateral Zhongfu (LU 1), Chize (LU 5) and Ximen (PC 4) beginning about 20 mm before the surgery in the EA + GA group. Endotracheal intubation was not employed but only prepared as a standby for patients of the EA + GA group. The dosage of narcotic drugs, duration of surgery, duration of aertic blockage, rate of cardiac re-beating, volumes of post-operative blood transfusion, discharge volume, cases of post-operative pulmonary infection, vocal cord injury, and the time of first bed-off, first eating and duration in intensive care unit (IOU) residence. etc. were recorded. RESULTS The successful rates of heart valve replacement surgery were similar in both GA and EA + GA groups. Compared with the GA group, the dosages of Fentanyl, Midazolam and Vecuronium of the EA + GA group were significantly lower (P < 0.05, P < 0.01), the numbers of patients needing blood-transfusion, antibiotics treatment, and suffering from pulmonary infection were fewer, the time of first bed-off and duration of hospitalizetion and IOU residence were considerably shorter (P < 0.05, P < 0.01) and the total medical cost was obviously lower (P < 0.05) in the EA + GA group. CONCLUSION EA combined with general anesthesia strategy for heart valve replacement surgery without endotracheal intubation is safe and can reduce post-operative morbidity and medical costs in patients undergoing heart valve replacement surgery under cardiopulmonary bypass.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Mesohepatectomy (MH) avoids unnecessary sacrifice of functional parenchyma compared with extended hepatectomy (EH). The aim of this study was to compare the results of MH with those of EH in the management of centrally located liver tumours (CLLTs). METHODS All patients with CLLTs treated by liver resection between 2005 and 2011 were enrolled in this retrospective study. The decision to use MH or EH was made on an individual basis. Outcomes of the procedures were compared and a classification system for MH was devised consisting of four types, with type IV representing the most complex procedure. RESULTS MH was performed in 292 patients and EH in 138. MH was associated with a longer duration of operation (P < 0.001), higher intraoperative transfusion rate (P < 0.001) and lower complication rates (P = 0.001) compared with EH. There were no significant differences in hepatic inflow occlusion rate (P = 0.075), blood loss (P = 0.241) and length of hospital stay (P = 0.804) between the two groups. Type IV lesions had the longest duration of operation, greatest blood loss, and highest intraoperative transfusion and morbidity rates (all P < 0.050). CONCLUSION MH is a feasible and safe alternative to EH in selected patients with CLLTs. The proposed classification system may be useful in guiding the surgical treatment of CLLTs.

Abstract
This study was designed to assess the impact of premature ejaculation (PE) on a large population of men and their female partners using the instruments of intravaginal ejaculatory latency time (IELT) and patient-reported outcome (PRO) measures. A non-interventional, observational and cross-sectional field survey enrolled 2704 men with self-reported PE and their female partners from January 2010 to January 2012. PE was diagnosed by the International Society for Sexual Medicine (ISSM) criterion. IELT and sexual dysfunction were measured using a stopwatch and PRO measures, respectively. The incidence of PE in this study was 19.27%. PE negatively impacted on subjects and their partners, including reduced ejaculatory control and sexual satisfaction, and increased personal distress and interpersonal difficulty (P<0.001 for all). The severity of PE was considered worse by subjects than by their female partners (P<0.001). Reduced ejaculatory control and sexual satisfaction were considered the central themes of PE. Furthermore, a correlation was observed among the outcomes of IELT and PRO measures for subjects and their partners (absolute correlation coefficient ranged from 0.33 to 0.67). This in-depth qualitative study provides valuable insight into the PE status in Chinese men. Further research is needed to confirm and extend these results.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Robot-assisted coronary artery bypass graft (RACAB) or totally endoscopic coronary artery bypass graft (TECAB) utilizing the da Vinci surgical system is increasingly used to treat coronary heart disease (CHD), although traditional coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) remains a classic treatment. The aim of the present study was to establish the advantages and disadvantages of TECAB (or RACAB) compared with traditional CABG. METHODS PubMed and EBSCO databases were searched for studies of TECAB (or RACAB) using the da Vinci surgical system and CABG for CHD. The meta-analysis included 16 studies (2290 patients). RESULTS Compared with traditional CABG, TECAB (or RACAB) had lower rates of major adverse cardiac or cerebrovascular events (MACCE) 12 months postprocedure (7.0% vs. 12.4%; odds ratio [OR], 0.53; confidence interval [CI], 0.38-0.74; p < 0.05). Subgroup analysis highlighted the differences between TECAB and RACAB as follows: TECAB decreased the rate of renal failure requiring hemofiltration (OR, 0.25; CI, 0.07-0.88), wound infection (OR, 0.11; CI, 0.11-1.99), and stroke (OR, 0.14; CI, 0.02-0.77) during follow-up, but increased the need for re-exploration for bleeding and MACCE (OR, 2.18; CI, 1.14-4.16; p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS TECAB and RACAB are safe and feasible therapies for CHD. This meta-analysis supports TECAB(or RACAB)using the da Vinci surgical system to treat CHD with reduced MACCE after 12 months. In addition, TECAB and RACAB do not increase the rates of MACCE in hospital, graft stenosis (or occlusion), and the need for reintervention compared with CABG.

Abstract
The present study was undertaken to develop a new method for enriching cancer stem cells (CSCs) from the human adrenal cortical carcinoma (ACC) cell line SW-13. Given that the existence of CSCs in ACC causes resistance to conventional chemotherapies, treatment with cyclophosphamide was used for in vivo selection of CSCs in a BALB/c nude mouse tumor xenograft model established using the ACC cell line SW-13. The characteristics of CSCs in three generations of tumor xenografts were assessed for single-cell colony formation, flat colony formation, and cell sphere formation in serum-free suspension culture. The formation rates of single-cell colonies, flat colonies, and cell spheres were significantly higher for tumor xenograft cells treated with cyclophosphamide than for untreated engrafted tumor cells. Flow cytometry to examine expression of the CSC markers C-X-C chemokine receptor type-4 (CXCR4; CD184) and ATP-binding cassette sub-family G member-2 (ABCG2; CDw338) revealed markedly higher levels of CXCR4 and ABCG2 in cyclophosphamide-treated xenograft tumor cells compared to untreated tumor cells. Together, these results indicate that cyclophosphamide treatment of tumor xenograft cells caused enrichment of CSCs with a strong capability for self-renewal and proliferation. In this method, the administration of cyclophosphamide selectively kills cancer cells without toxicity to CSCs and thereby provides a practical approach for achieving the enrichment of CSCs in ACC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Abnormality in the number and function of regulatory T cells (Tregs) has been linked to initiation and progression in patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). AIM This study aims to demonstrate the apoptosis status of regulatory T cells (Tregs) and its correlation with clinical activity of RA patients and the effect of interleukin-10 (IL-10) on Tregs apoptosis in RA. MATERIALS AND METHODS Apoptosis rates and its related molecules including Fas, Bcl-2, Caspase-3 and Caspase-8 were examined using flow cytometry. The correlation between the apoptosis level of Tregs and clinical activity parameters including ESR (erythrocyte sedimentation rate), CPR (C reactive protein), RF (Rheumatoid Factor) and DAS28 (Disease activity score 28) was analysed. PBMCs isolated from RA patients were cultured with IL-10 or anti-IL-10, and the apoptosis frequency of Tregs was then analyzed. RESULTS The frequency of Tregs in active RA patients was decreased, and Fas, Caspase-3 and Caspase-8 expression on Tregs was much higher compared with the healthy subjects. The expression of anti-apoptotic protein, Bcl-2 on Tregs did not display significant changes between active RA patients and healthy subjects. There was a significantly positive correlation between the levels of apoptosis rates and Caspase-3 expression in Tregs and DAS28 of active RA patients. The apoptosis rates of Tregs in RA patients decreased or increased, respectively, following treatment with IL-10 or anti-IL-10 antibody in vitro. CONCLUSIONS Apoptosis pathways are defective in Treg cells from RA patients with active disease. IL-10 treatment can modulate apoptosis in Tregs via extrinsic (type I) pathway, which may lead to restoration of the Tregs towards that of controlling autoimmune reaction in RA patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bone marrow stem cells (MSCs) were able to reduce fibrovascular tissues formation via TNF alpha-stimulated gene/protein 6 (6TSG-6) in various animal models. At the same time, tendon-derived stem cells (TDSCs) were able to promote rotator cuff healing; however, the mechanism is still unknown. AIM To investigate the role of TSG-6 in the treatment of rotator cuff healing with TDSCs. MATERIALS AND METHODS 45 rats underwent unilateral detachment and repair of the supraspinatus tendon. 15 animals received TDSCs in a fibrin glue carrier(Group A), 15 received TSG-6 silenced TDSCs (Group B), and 15 received fibrin glue for control (Group C). Animals were sacrificed at 4 weeks and evaluated for the biomechanical testing. Statistical analysis was performed with an independent t test with significance set at p = 0.05. RESULTS The ultimate stress was greater in the TDSCs group (4.91 ± 1.41 N/mm(2)) as compared with the Control group (2.99 ± 1.04 N/mm(2)) (p < 0.05). However, when silent the expression of TSG-6, the TSG-6 silenced group (3.36 ± 0.96 N/mm(2)) showed no benefit over the control group (p = 0.32). CONCLUSIONS TSG-6 mediates the function of TDSCs to improve the structure and the attachment strength of the healing tendon-bone interface.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The ability of B cells to negatively regulate cellular immune responses and inflammation has been described. The regulatory B (Breg) cells with the unique CD1d(hi)CD5(+)CD19(+) phenotype and the capacity to produce IL-10 are potent negative regulators of inflammation and autoimmunity in several in vivo mouse models of autoimmune disease. AIM To investigate whether Breg cell deficiency participates in autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT) in an animal model. MATERIALS AND METHODS Non-obese diabetic (NOD).H-2(h4) mice at 4 weeks of age were randomly divided into control and iodine-treated groups; the iodine-treated group received sterile water containing 0.005 % NaI for 10 or 20 weeks. The percentage of CD1d(hi)CD5(+)CD19(+) Bregs, CD4(+)CD25(+)FoxP3(+) regulatory T cells (Treg) and CD4(+)IL17(+) T helper 17 cells (Th17) in splenic mononuclear cells was detected by multicolor flow cytometry. The expression of IL-10 mRNA and TGF-β mRNA in splenocytes was measured by real-time RT-PCR. RESULTS NOD.H-2(h4) mice spontaneously develop anti-thyroglobulin autoantibodies and intrathyroidal lymphocyte infiltration when supplied with iodine in drinking water. Mice with AIT had a decreased CD1d(hi)CD5(+)CD19(+) Breg subset and reduced IL-10 mRNA expression in splenocytes compared with controls (p < 0.05) and maintained relatively low levels during the development of thyroiditis. The proportion of Breg cells was negatively correlated with the proportion of Th17 cells, but positively correlated with CD4(+)CD25(+)FoxP3(+) Treg cells in splenocytes (All p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The defective expression of Breg cells combined with impaired Treg cells and enhanced Th17 cells might play an important role in the development of iodine-induced AIT in NOD.H-2(h4) mice.

Abstract
In this paper, we theoretically and experimentally prove that sub-carriers in double-side band fast orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DSB-FOFDM) are orthogonal over a symbol interval independent of the signal phase and amplitude. Therefore, the commonly utilized DSB-FOFDM is quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) accommodated; while previously DSB-FOFDM was usually modulated by amplitude shift keying (ASK) or binary phase shift keying (BPSK). In our proof-of-concept experiments, bit error ratio (BER) performance of 10 Gb/s quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) modulated DSB-FOFDM was equivalent to that of 10 Gb/s QPSK modulated OFDM after 500 km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) transmission. 10 Gb/s QPSK modulated DSB-FOFDM largely outperformed the commonly utilized 4-ASK modulated DSB-FOFDM in BER performance. Additionally, BER performance of 10 Gb/s 16-QAM modulated DSB-FOFDM was equivalent to that of 10 Gb/s 16-QAM modulated OFDM after 500 km SSMF transmission.

Abstract
Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptorg (Pparγ) is a member of the nuclear receptor (NR) superfamily, which regulates diverse biological functions including lipogenesis and differentiation, anti-inflammation, insulin sensitivity, cellular proliferation, and autophagy. Independent lines of evidence support a role for Pparγ as either a collaborative oncogene or as a tumor suppressor. Heterozygous mutations of Pparγ have been detected in 4/55 patients with colon cancer and a chromosomal translocation between PAX8 and Pparγ in follicular thyroid cancer appeared to serve as a dominant inhibitor of endogenous Pparγ expression. Pparγ agonists reduced tumorigenesis in several in vivo models. In contrast, several studies suggest Pparγ may enhance tumor growth. Pparγ ligands increased polyp numbers in the Apc mouse model of familial adenomatosis. Pparγ and its ligands inhibit breast tumor growth; however, constitutively active Pparγ collaborated in mammary oncogenesis with polyoma middle T antigen or oncogenic ErbB2.
Pparγ activation involves post-translational modifications including phosphorylation and sumoylation upon growth factor or ligand stimulus. Mutation of the Pparγ1 sumoylation site at K77 and K365 demonstrated that K77 may either reduce Pparγ-dependent gene induction and enhance repression or reduce repression, depending upon the synthetic reporter gene used. Lysine residues of nuclear receptors also serve as substrates for acetylation and Pparγ binds co-activators and co-repressors with intrinsic or associated histone acetylase or deacetylase activity including NCoR, SMRT, SIRT1, and p300. Initially characterized for the ERα, AR and, subsequently, the orphan nuclear receptor steroidogenic factor 1 (SF-1), acetylation occurs at a conserved lysine motif shared amongst evolutionarily related nuclear receptors. Several nuclear receptors and co-integrators involved in lipid metabolism are regulated by acetylation including p300, PGC1α, FXR, LXR and RAR. Both TSA- and NAD-sensitive HDACs (e.g. SIRT1) regulate Pparγ function and SIRT1 inhibits Pparγ-dependent adipocyte differentiation. Whether Pparγ is acetylated in cancer cells and how Pparγ exerts it's crucial, though controversial, function in tumorigenesis have not been established.
Pparγ induces gene transcription through binding specific NR half-sites and through non-canonical binding sequences (such as CREB/AP-1 sites). Transcriptional repression involves Pparγ sumoylation at lysine 77 (K77). Herein, Pparγ was shown to be acetylated at nine distinct lysine residues. SIRT1 bound and deacetylated Pparγ at K154/155. ChIP-Seq analysis for genome-wide DNA binding demonstrated the acetylation site was required for binding NR half-sites, but was not required for non-canonical site binding. Breast tumor growth, de novo lipid synthesis, induction of autophagy and evasion of apoptosis was promoted by K154/155 and inhibited by K77 in vivo. Pparγ acetylation induced a gene signature that was increased in breast cancer, associated with a reduction in SIRT1 abundance and poor outcome. The Pparγ acetylation site determines binding to autophagy and apoptosis signaling to regulate breast tumor lipid metabolism and growth.
