Abstract
Peptidyldipeptide hydrolase [angiotensin I-converting enzyme, EC 3.4.15.1] was inhibited by inorganic and organic phosphorus compounds tested, except for beta-glycerophosphate, 5'-AMP, and 5'-ADP, at the reagent concentrations used. Orthophosphate and pyrophosphate nonspecifically inhibited the enzyme activity. The enzyme was also inhibited specifically by carboxylates. The degree of inhibition by aliphatic monocarboxylates increased in proportion to their chain length up to C14. Aromatic and omega-phenylalkylcarboxylates also inhibited the enzyme activity. The enzyme was noncompetitively inhibited by acetate, 3-phenylpropionate and laurate. The Ki's for acetate, 3-phenylpropionate, and laurate were 60, 3.3, and 2.5 mM, respectively.

Abstract
A blood group A active substance was isolated from an acetone-dried powder of oyster viscera by extraction with 0.1 M NaCl after heating a homogenate with extraction medium, in boiling water. After the removal of the acidic fraction with cetylpyridinium chloride, the separated neutral fraction was digested successively with alpha-amylase and amyloglucosidase to remove glycogen. The blood group A-active portion was eluted from a Sepharose 4B column and purified by DEAE-Sephadex column chromatography. The purified active substance was homogeneous by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, and its molecular weight was estimated as 100 000 by sedimentation equilibrium. The sugar content of the purified active substance, expressed in percentage of dry weight, was galactosamine, 16.6; galactose, 12.5; fucose, 9.9; glucosamine, 4.6; and glucose, 3.3. Sialic acid was not detected. Total amino acid content was 23.0% and the main constituents were threonine, proline and serine. The ORD spectrum indicated that the hexosamines were N-acetylated. Absence of glycolipid was confirmed by the analysis of fatty acid and sphingosine base. This active substance had a strong blood group A activity (0.04 mug/ml) but neither B nor H activity; it interacted with lima bean lectin but not with concanavalin A.

Abstract
Ajmaline, a rauwolfia derivative, has been found to possess potent antiarrhythmic effects. The present study has been designed to define the cardiovascular effects of this drug. Hemodynamic studies performed in anesthetized and conscious dogs demonstrated no significant changes in measured hemodynamic parameters at doses equal to or less than 2 mg. per kilogram. Studies in isolated papillary muscle demonstrated no negative inotropic effects until concentrations of 1 X 10(-4). Disparate results were obtained with regard to heart rate reflecting the state of autonomic tone. Electrophysiologic studies in both anesthetized and conscious dogs demonstrated a significant depression of intraventricular conduction with no significant effect on AV nodal conduction; ventricular automaticity was not affected. Ajmaline did not alter digitalis-induced AV nodal conduction prolongation. However, ajmaline dramatically altered or abolished ventricular arrhythmias secondary to acute ischemia. In conclusion, these studies demonstrate that ajmaline specifically depresses intraventricular conduction, suggesting that this drug would be particularly effective in the treatment of re-entrant ventricular arrhythmias.

Abstract
Angiotensin I-converting enzyme [EC 3.4.15.1] was rapidly and highly purified from a particulate fraction of hog kidney cortex with 13% yield. The procedure, which was rapid, included fractionation on DEAE-cellulose and calcium phosphate gel, chromatographies on DEAE-Sephadex A-50 and hydroxylapatite columns, and gel filtration on a Sephadex G-200 column. The purified enzyme preparation gave two protein bands on standard disc gel electrophoresis, but showed a single protein component on the gel after treatment with neuraminidase [EC 3.2.1.18]. The data strongly suggest that the purified enzyme preparation was a mixture of sialo- and asialo-enzyme. Sialic acid residues apparently do not contribute to the catalytic activity of the enzyme. The enzyme was activated more by chloride ions than by other halide ions tested, using Bz-Gly-Gly-Gly as a substrate. The dissociation constant for chloride ions was determined to be 2.2 mM. Chloride did not protect the enzyme against heat or low pH. The enzyme was resistant to inactivation by trypsin [EC 3.4.21.4] and chymotrypsin [EC 3.4.21.1].

Abstract
A solvolytic N-desulfation of heparin was developed by treatment of its pyridinium salt with dimethyl sulfoxide containing 5% of water or methanol for 1.5 h at 50 degrees. Chemical and chromatographic studies showed that the solvolytic desulfation is a useful method for N-desulfation of heparin without depolymerization of the heparin molecule. The partially N-desulfated heparins were also obtained by treatment with dimethyl sulfoxide containing 5% of water at 20 degrees, and their anticoagulant activity is related to the degree of N-desulfation.

Abstract
It was found that triethylammonium cyclamate is converted into N-hepta-fluorobutyrylcyclohexylamine in a high and constant yield by reaction with hepta-fluorobutyric anhydride at 90 degrees for 1 h, and gas chromatography of the product gives a sharp peak that is highly sensitive to an electron capture detector. A useful method for the micro-determination of cyclamates was established by combining this reaction with gas chromatography.

Abstract
Lidocaine was given in increasing step-wise dose concentrations of 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 mg/minute and the resulting serum concentrations correlated with the effect of this agent on the peripheral vasculature of seven patients. Lidocaine infusion causes an immediate sustained increase in mean calf venous capacitance but little effect on mean diastolic blood pressure. In high concentration levels this agent causes an increase in mean calf blood flow and systolic blood pressure. Its effect on calf vascular resistance is variable, but there is a tendency to reduce resistance, particularly at a high concentration level. The effect of lidocaine infusion rate on serum lidocaine levels was such that the greater the infusion rate, the higher the resultant serum lidocaine levels.

Abstract
The peripheral hemodynamics of 20 patients were studied 24 hours before and 24 hours following completion of Seldinger transfemoral cardiac catheterization. All patients were catheterized in the right femoral artery and vein, while in 13 an arterial needle was placed in the left femoral artery.
In the catheterized leg, mean calf blood flow and venous capacitance fell while mean calf vascular resistance was increased. The placement of an indwelling arterial needle caused mean calf blood flow to fall with an increase in calf vascular resistance. Venous capacitance was unchanged. The above changes while present 24 hours after catheterization had returned to normal one week later. While no symptoms or signs of limb ischemia occurred, oscillometry showed deterioration in the lower limb pulsation amplitudes in 13 of the 20 patients. No significant changes in peripheral hemodynamics were seen in the limbs, the arteries of which had not been catheterized.
Thus, although all patients were symptomless and free of signs suggestive of ischemia clinically, arterial and venous catheterization and/or the placement of an arterial needle causes significant changes which last at least 24 hours distal to the invasion of the vessels.

Abstract
Abstract
As a result of a search for a method for the simultaneous analysis of organic compounding ingredients in vulcanized rubber by one dimensional and two dimensional thin layer chromatography, a method was discovered by which it was possible to identify directly 24 accelerators and 19 antioxidants. The sample was developed on a Wakogel B-5 (silica gel) plate with chloroform/benzene (10/9) in one direction and then with ethanol in the other direction. The plate was sprayed with formalin/sulfuric acid (1/4) and then heated for one hour at 120° C. It was found that the 43 compounding ingredients could all be identified from their Rƒ values and the colors of the spots. Good results were also obtained in the actual analysis of the organic compounding ingredients in vulcanized rubbers. Investigation of interference by the base rubbers showed that the organic compounding ingredients could be identified. Translator's note: According to the English summary, the silica gel contains 5% of calcined gypsum. This is not mentioned in the Japanese text.
