Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the potential of cabbage-apple juice, fermented by Lactobacillus plantarum EM isolated from kimchi, to protect against obesity and dyslipidemia that are induced by a high-fat diet in a rat model. Male rats were fed a modified AIN-93M high-fat diet (HFD), the same diet supplemented with non-fermented cabbage-apple juice, or the same diet supplemented with fermented cabbage-apple juice for eight weeks. In the HFD-fermented cabbage- apple juice administered groups the following parameters decreased: body weight, liver and white fat pad weights, serum triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), LDL-cholesterol, insulin, glucose and leptin levels, TG levels, while HDL-C and adiponectin levels in serum increased as compared with the HFD group. The HFD-fed rats that were supplemented with fermented cabbage-apple juice exhibited significantly lower fatty acid synthase (FAS), acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC), and malic enzyme gene expression levels when compared to the exclusively HFD-fed rats. The anti-obesity and hypolipidemic effects were marginally greater in the fermented juice administered group than in the non-fermented juice administered group. These results suggest that cabbage-apple juice-especially fermented cabbage-apple juice-might have beneficial effects on lipid metabolism dysfunction and obesity-related abnormalities. However, further studies are necessary for analyzing the biochemical regulatory mechanisms of fermented juice for obesity amelioration and lipid metabolic homeostasis.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the combined effects of two most potent probiotic bacteria Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacillus plantarum on overall health and immune status of freshwater crayfish, marron under laboratory conditions. A total of 36 marron were distributed into six different tanks and two different feeding groups, control and probiotic-fed group. After acclimation, control group was fed with basal diet while probiotic group was fed 109 CFU/mL per kg of bacterial supplemented feed for 60 days. The results showed no significant differences in weight gain, however, probiotic feed significantly enhanced some hemolymph parameters and biochemical composition of tail muscle. Histology data revealed better hepatopancreas health and higher microvilli counts in the marron gut fed probiotic diet. The probiotic bacteria triggered significant shift of microbial communities at different taxa level, mostly those reported as beneficial for crayfish. The probiotic diet also enriched the metabolic functions and genes associated with innate immune response of crayfish. Further correlation analysis revealed significant association of some taxa with increased activity for hemolymph and immune genes. Therefore, dietary Lactobacillus supplementation can modulate the overall health and immunity as well as gut microbial composition and interaction network between gut microbiota and immune system in crayfish.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) increases the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma, which is currently the leading cause of obesity-related cancer deaths in middle-aged men. METHODS Probiotics with lipid-lowering function were screened from the fecal microbiota of healthy adults. Polysaccharide from different sources was screened for improving insulin resistance. The combination of probiotics and Salvia miltiorrhiza polysaccharide (LBM) was investigated for alleviating hepatic steatosis. RESULTS First, Bifidobacterium bifidum V (BbV) and Lactobacillus plantarum X (LpX) were obtained from the fecal microbiota of healthy adults. Second, to improve insulin resistance, a Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge polysaccharide showing good performance in reducing insulin resistance was obtained. The liver total cholesterol (TC) and total triglyceride (TG) levels and the serum levels of free fatty acid, alanine transaminase, aspartate transaminase, low density lipoprotein cholesterol, TG, and TC can be significantly reduced through supplementation with LpX-BbV (LB) in NAFLD mice. Interestingly, the function of the probiotic LB can be enhanced by S. miltiorrhiza Bunge polysaccharide. Furthermore, the gut microbiota was modulated by LpX-BbV+S. miltiorrhiza Bunge polysaccharide (LBM). The lipopolysaccharide concentration of the LBM group was decreased by 73.6% compared to the NAFLD group. Ultimately, the mRNA concentrations of the proinflammatory cytokines (tumor necrosis factor α, interleukin 1β [IL-1β], and IL-6) decreased with LB and LBM treatment. CONCLUSION The results of this this study indicate that the LBM combination can be used as a therapeutic for ameliorating NAFLD via modulating the gut microbiota and improving insulin resistance.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM OF THE WORK Urinary tract infections (UTIs) and recurrent urinary tract infections (rUTIs) are widespread disease and almost half of all women will experience at least one episode of cystitis during their life. Aim of this study was to review the evidence of literature about the therapeutic and preventive effects of a product containing D-Mannose, ElliroseTM and Lactobacollus Plantarum on patients' symptoms, quality of life and recurrence of UTIs and to investigate the practicing urologists' knowledge about the clinical application of this product. MATERIALS We administrated an investigational survey about clinical use of a phytotherapeutic product made of D-Mannose, ElliroseTM and Lactobacollus Plantarum to 12 residents in Urology at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia and to 32 urologists working in the provinces of Modena, Reggio Emilia and Parma. RESULTS 61% of physicians have diagnosed rUTIs in 3-6 patients during a month, and 7% of them in more than 6 patients during the same period of time. By these results rUTIs appear as common pathological conditions. 59% prescribed the product at least 1 time a month and 14% prescribed it more than 5 times. 43% administrated the product after out-patient invasive examinations as cistoscopy and urodynamic exam for UTIs prevention. 55% noticed a significant improvement in patient's QoL (Quality of Life) suffering from rUTIs. Furthermore 48% also reported a significant effect for the improvement of urinary symptoms of patients. No gastric or general side effects have been noticed during the administration period. Finally the cost of integrator has been reported affordable for the great majority of patients. CONCLUSIONS Many studies in Literature have shown that D-Mannose and H. sabdariffa (ElliroseTM) reduce the risk of development of rUTIs opposing colonization and proliferation of uropathogenic bacteria in urinary tract. Our investigational survey about the administration of a phytotherapeutic product showed that this product is well-known and has a proved positive impact.

Abstract
The addition of exogenous microorganisms is one approach with potential that may also overcome the problem in northern China of slow composting in autumn and winter due to low environmental temperatures. This study investigated the use of supplements of Lactobacillus plantarum (L. plantarum), strains P-8 and LP-10, on the efficiency of sheep manure composting and the quality of the final product. The composting process lasted eight weeks and, during this time, changes in multiple physical-chemical parameters and the compost microbiome were monitored. Microbiota-encoded functions, community structure and physical-chemical parameters were distinct between the two groups. 'Composting microbiota maturation index' was proposed to quantitatively compare the impact of maturation on composting microecology. The rapid improvement in composting rate (4 weeks) and quality of the final product suggest that this approach could provide both technological and economic benefits. This work reveals the tremendous potential of L. plantarum as a promoter in composting.

Abstract
Deltamethrin (DLM) is a synthetic pyrethroid used for agricultural purposes to control insects and has been found to pollute the aquatic environment and leads to serious health problems. Lactobacillus plantaruml-137 (L-137) has gained more popularity as functional supplement for its immunomodulatory effects and antioxidant potential. This study was designed to examine the potential of l-137 on liver function, histopathology, immune and antioxidant related gene expressions in Nile tilapia exposed to subacute DLM for 30 days. Fish (mean weight of 28.18 ± 1.34 g) was distributed into four groups (triplicates): the first and second groups fed the control diet, while the third and fourth groups fed l-137 at 50 mg/kg and the second and fourth groups were exposed to DLM (15 μg/L) in rearing water (control, DLM, l-137 and DLM + L-137, respectively). DLM-treated fish groups showed a significant increase in blood biochemical parameters (creatinine, urea and bilirubin) as well as hepatic enzymes (ALP, AST and ALT) (P < 0.05). Blood total protein, globulin, albumin, WBCs, RBCs, Hb, phagocytic index, phagocytic and lysozyme activities were significantly decreased in fish exposed to DLM (P < 0.05). Additionally, DLM toxicity downregulated the transcription of immune genes (IL-1β and IL-8), while upregulated the stress related genes (HSP70 and CASP3). The histopathological images of Nile tilapia exposed to DLM revealed damage in gills, intestine, spleen and liver which confirmed the toxic effects. Conversely, l-137 presented protective effects and restored the aforementioned parameters when fish exposed to DLM and fed l-137. Further, l-137 restored the antioxidative capacity (CAT and GPx). Thus, l-137 supplementation exhibited defensive effects against DLM toxicity in Nile tilapia through improving blood biochemical responses, immune, and antioxidant related gene expressions as well as histopathological effects.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Fermented noni (Morinda citrifolia L.) fruit juice is considered as one of the health-promoting beverage. The food industries are working on further improvement of fermented noni juice. The objective of the current study was to assess the impact of green tea (GT) extract during the lactic acid bacteria (Lactobacillus plantarum SK15) mediated fermentation of noni fruit juice. MATERIALS AND METHODS The clean-diced noni fruits were blended with sugar, water, 10% SK15 and GT extract. The mixture was kept at 30°C for 25 days. During fermentation, samples were collected. The changes in pH, acidity, alcohol, sugar, pectin content, total phenolic content (TPC), antioxidant capacity (AC), pectin methylesterase (PME) activity and microbial load were assessed. RESULTS The fermented noni fruit juice exhibited significantly low pH, sugar and pectin content. TPC and AC were increased after fermentation. The alcohol content, especially methanol volume was increased in all the samples but not exceed the lethal level. The samples with GT extract exhibited superior quality in all measured aspects. Notably, PME activity was suppressed by GT extract, which was reflected in the methanol content of the respective samples when compared to control. CONCLUSION The results suggested that GT extract could be used in the production of fermented plant beverages to prevent the indigenous PME activity (to reduce the methanol formation) and to improve the AC of the product. Further studies are required to know the fate of other phytochemicals and volatile compounds in noni fruit juice during fermentation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Oscillating magnetic field (OMF) assisted freezing has been proposed for improving the frozen preservation of biological materials. However, contradictory results have been reported on foods, tissues and cells, and so doubts exist in its actual benefit. OBJECTIVE To study the effect of OMF-assisted freezing on the viability of fermentation starter Lactobacillus plantarum. MATERIALS AND METHODS L. plantarum bacteria were frozen in a batch air blast freezer (-20ºC, 5 m s-1) by OMF-assisted freezing (0.57 mT). Bacterial viability was examined after 60 days of frozen storage and 5 freeze-thaw cycles. RESULTS OMF showed no statistically significant effects (P > 0.05) in key freezing curve characteristics, refuting Cell Alive System (CAS) technology claims. OMF-assisted freezing did not improve bacterial preservation. CONCLUSION There was no effect of the application of the maximum OMF (0.57 mT) on cell viability independently of the frozen storage time (up to 60 days) and freeze-thaw repetitions (up to 5 cycles).

Abstract
BACKGROUND T2DM may cause increased levels of oxidative stress and cardiac apoptosis through elevated blood glucose. The present study investigated the effects of Lactobacillus plantarum (L. plantarum) as a probiotic strain and inulin as a prebiotic supplement on cardiac oxidative stress and apoptotic markers in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) rats. METHODS A high-fat diet and a low dose of streptozotocin were used to induce type 2 diabetes. The rats were divided into six groups which were supplemented with L. plantarum, inulin, or their combination for 8 weeks. RESULTS The results showed improved activity of cardiac antioxidant parameters including total antioxidant capacity (TAC), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) (P < 0.001, P < 0.01, and P < 0.01, respectively) and decreased level of cardiac malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration (P < 0.05). These changes were accompanied with increased protein expression of cardiac obesity receptor (Ob-R) (P = 0.05) and reduced apoptotic markers such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), Fas ligand (FasL), and caspase proteins (P < 0.001, P = 0.003, and P < 0.01, respectively) in T2DM rats after concurrent L. plantarum and inulin supplementation. Moreover, a remarkable correlation of cardiac Ob-R and oxidative stress parameters with cardiac apoptotic markers was observed (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION The concurrent use of L. plantarum and inulin seems to be beneficial, as they can lead to decreased heart complications of T2DM via reducing cardiac apoptotic markers.

Abstract
Two Lactobacillus strains have proven anti-inflammatory properties by reducing pro-inflammatory responses to antigens. This randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial tested the hypothesis that L. plantarum HEAL9 and L. paracasei 8700:2 suppress ongoing celiac disease autoimmunity in genetically at risk children on a gluten-containing diet in a longitudinally screening study for celiac disease. Seventy-eight children with celiac disease autoimmunity participated of whom 40 received 1010 CFU/day of L. plantarum HEAL9 and L. paracasei 8700:2 (probiotic group) and 38 children maltodextrin (placebo group) for six months. Blood samples were drawn at zero, three and six months and phenotyping of peripheral blood lymphocytes and IgA and IgG autoantibodies against tissue transglutaminase (tTG) were measured. In the placebo group, naïve CD45RA+ Th cells decreased (p = 0.002) whereas effector and memory CD45RO+ Th cells increased (p = 0.003). In contrast, populations of cells expressing CD4+CD25highCD45RO+CCR4+ increased in the placebo group (p = 0.001). Changes between the groups were observed for NK cells (p = 0.038) and NKT cells (p = 0.008). Median levels of IgA-tTG decreased more significantly over time in the probiotic (p = 0.013) than in the placebo (p = 0.043) group whereas the opposite was true for IgG-tTG (p = 0.062 respective p = 0.008). In conclusion, daily oral administration of L. plantarum HEAL9 and L. paracasei 8700:2 modulate the peripheral immune response in children with celiac disease autoimmunity.

Abstract
Abdominal surgery represents a high risk for hospital-acquired infections and complication that may compromise the surgery outcome. Patients with recent abdominal surgery have an intestinal dysbiosis. There is evidence that probiotics may counterbalance the impaired microbiota. Therefore, the current survey evaluated the efficacy and safety of Abincol®, an oral nutraceutical containing a probiotic mixture with Lactobacillus plantarum LP01 (1 billion of living cells), Lactobacillus lactis subspecies cremoris LLC02 (800 millions of living cells), and Lactobacillus delbrueckii LDD01 (200 millions of living cells), in 612 outpatients (344 males and 268 females, mean age 58 years) undergoing digestive surgery. Patients took 1 stick/daily for 8 weeks. Abincol® significantly diminished the presence and the severity of intestinal symptoms and improved stool form. In conclusion, the current survey suggests that Abincol® may be considered an effective and safe therapeutic option in the management of patients undergoing digestivesurgery.

Abstract
Chronic intestinal disorders (CID), including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and diverticular disease (DD), are diseases that relapse episodes. There is evidence that patients with CID have intestinal dysbiosis, so probiotics may counterbalance the impaired microbiota. Therefore, the current survey evaluated the efficacy and safety of Abincol®, an oral nutraceutical containing a probiotic mixture with Lactobacillus plantarum LP01 (1 billion of living cells), Lactobacillus lactis subspecies cremoris LLC02 (800 millions of living cells), and Lactobacillus delbrueckii LDD01 (200 millions of living cells), in 3,460 outpatients (1,660 males and 1,800 females, mean age 55 years) with chronic intestinal disorders. Patients took 1 stick/daily for 8 weeks. Abincol® significantly diminished the presence and the severity of intestinal symptoms and improved stool form. In conclusion, the current survey suggests that Abincol® may be considered an effective and safe therapeutic option in the management of patients with chronic intestinal disorders.

Abstract
This four-week, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study investigated the effects of Lactobacillus plantarum PS128 (PS128) on boys with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) aged 7-15 in Taiwan. All subjects fulfilled the criteria for ASD diagnosis of DSM-V and the Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R). Questionnaires used for the primary outcome measure include the Autism Behavior Checklist-Taiwan version (ABC-T), the Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS) and the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL). The Swanson, Nolan, and Pelham-IV-Taiwan version (SNAP-IV) and the Clinical Global Impression-improvement (CGI-I) were used for the secondary outcome measure. The results showed that PS128 ameliorated opposition/defiance behaviors, and that the total score of SNAP-IV for younger children (aged 712) improved significantly compared with the placebo group. Additionally, several elements were also notably improved in the PS128 group after 28-day consumption of PS128. Further studies are needed to better clarify the effects of PS128 for younger children with ASD on broader symptoms.

Abstract
In order to enrich the library of domestic research about new red fluorescent marker in lactic acid bacteria (LAB), we described a new fusion expression system in Lactobacillus plantarum WCFS1 based on the pSIP vector. This system contained red fluorescent protein mCherry as a marker and bile salt hydrolase gene (bsh) as a reporter gene. Moreover, in this study, four different promoters (PsppA, PldhL, P32 and PslpA) were used to regulate the expression of the fusion protein mCherry-BSH, completing the inducible and constitutive expression in lactic acid bacteria. The recombinant protein mCherry-BSH presented activity of red fluorescence and bile salt hydrolase (BSH). The successful construction of the fusion expression system in LAB using a red fluorescent protein mCherry provides favorable conditions for the distribution, intestinal colonization and survival rate of lactic acid bacteria, so as to reveal the function mechanism of its probiotic characteristics; and the system also could lay the foundation for researches on protein expression, cellular localization and properties identification of active protein in lactic acid bacteria.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Tiger-nut has long been recognized for its generous health benefits. Milk permeate as a by-product, contains lactose, soluble vitamins and salts. Probiotics are live micro-organisms that confer a benefit on the host. The aim of this work was to use a combination of tiger-nut aqueous extract (TNAE) and UF-milk permeate, fortified with probiotic bacteria, to produce a functional dairy beverage. Material s and Methods: Milk-permeate (65%), TNAE (30%) and sugar (5%) were the best portions used to produce permeate-tiger nut beverage. Three probiotic bacteria mixture including, L. plantarum and L. acidophilus culture (1:1), L. plantarum and B. breve culture (1:1) and L. plantarum with both L. acidophilus and B. breve culture (1:1:1) were added to create 3 permeate-tiger nut beverages namely T1, T2 and T3, respectively. The follow up of their bacteriological, physical and chemical characteristics/changes during a storage period of 10 days was evaluated. RESULTS No changes in the survival of the probiotics bacteria were observed throughout the storage period (10 days). Meanwhile, T3 has low pH value and acetaldehyde content but has high diacetyl content and antioxidant activity followed by T2 and T1. Permeate-tiger nut beverage fortified with probiotic bacteria exhibited higher lightness and lower redness and structure viscosity than the control from day 5 onwards. Also, T3 was less sensory acceptable compared to the others. CONCLUSION A mixture of UF-milk permeate (65%), tiger-nut aqueous extract (30%) and 5% sugar, fortified with 1% mixture of probiotic cultures produced a healthy stable beverage.

Abstract
The fermentation characteristics, structural carbohydrate degradation and enzymatic hydrolysis of rice straw ensiled with hemicellulase and Lactobacillus plantarum were examined. Fresh rice straw was ensiled in 1-L laboratory silos with no additive control (CK), L. plantarum (L), hemicellulase (HC) and hemicellulase + L. plantarum (HCL) for 6, 15, 30 and 60 days. All additives increased lactic acid concentration, and reduced pH and lignocellulosic content of the resulting silage relative to the control. The highest organic acid and residual sugar contents and lignocellulose degradation were observed in HCL silage. Hemicellulase alone or combined with L. plantarum improved the enzymatic hydrolysis with higher glucose yield and cellulose convertibility. Fresh rice straw ensiled with the combined additives increased feedstock preservation and cellulose conversion, and is thus recommended as a biological pretreatment for subsequent biofuel production.

Abstract
Toll like receptor (TLR) 5 and 9 are important members of the TLR family that play key roles in innate immunity in all vertebrates. In this study, paTLR5 and paTLR9 were identified in silver pomfret (Pampus argenteus), a marine teleost of great economic value. Open reading frames (ORFs) of paTLR5 and paTLR9 are 2646 and 3225 bp, encoding polypeptides of 881 and 1074 amino acids, respectively. Sequence analysis revealed several conserved characteristic features, including signal peptides, leucine-rich repeat (LRR) motifs, and a Toll/interleukin-I receptor (TIR) domain. Sequence, phylogenetic and synteny analysis revealed high sequence identity with counterparts in other teleosts, confirming their correct nomenclature and conservation during evolution. Quantitative real-time PCR revealed that the that both TLRs were ubiquitously expressed in all investigated tissues, most abundantly in liver, kidney, spleen, intestine and gill, but lower in muscle and skin. In vitro immunostimulation experiments revealed that Aeromonas hydrophila lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and Vibrio anguillarum flagellin induced higher levels of paTLR9 and paTLR5 mRNA expression in isolated fish intestinal epithelial cells (FIECs) than Lactobacillus plantarum lipoteichoic acid (LTA), but all increased the secretion of IL-6 and TNF-α and induced cell apoptosis and necrosis. Together, these results indicate that paTLR5 and paTLR9 may function in the response to bacterial pathogens. Our findings enhance our understanding of the function of TLRs in the innate immune system of silver pomfret and other teleosts.

Abstract
The increased consumption of high fat-containing foods has been linked to the prevalence of obesity and abnormal metabolic syndromes. Rhizopus oligosporus, a fungus in the family Mucoraceae, is widely used as a starter for homemade tempeh. Although R. oligosporus can prevent the growth of other microorganisms, it grows well with lactic acid bacteria (LAB). Lactobacillus plantarum can produce β-glucosidase, which catalyzes the hydrolysis of glucoside isoflavones into aglycones (with greater bioavailability). Therefore, the development of a soybean-based functional food by the co-inoculation of R. oligosporus and L. plantarum is a promising approach to increase the bioactivity of tempeh. In this study, the ameliorative effect of L. plantarum in soy tempeh on abnormal carbohydrate metabolism in high-fat diet (HFD)-induced hyperglycemic rats was evaluated. The co-incubation of L. plantarum with R. oligosporus during soy tempeh fermentation reduced the homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance, HbA1c, serum glucose, total cholesterol, triglyceride, free fatty acid, insulin, and low-density lipoprotein contents, and significantly increased the high-density lipoprotein content in HFD rats. It also increased the LAB counts, as well as the bile acid, cholesterol, triglyceride, and short-chain fatty acid contents in the feces of HFD rats. Our results suggested that the modulation of serum glucose and lipid levels by LAB occurs via alterations in the internal microbiota, leading to the inhibition of cholesterol synthesis and promotion of lipolysis. Tempeh, which was produced with both L. plantarum and R. oligosporus, might be a beneficial dietary supplement for individuals with abnormal carbohydrate metabolism.

Abstract
Long-term exposure to ethanol simultaneously causes gastrointestinal inflammation, liver injury, and steatosis. In the present study, we investigated the effects of Bifidobacterium longum LC67, Lactobacillus plantarum LC27, and their mixture (LM) against ethanol-induced steatosis in mice. Exposure to ethanol caused liver damage: it increased ALT, AST, TG, TC, and lipopolysaccharide levels in the blood and induced NF-κB activation in the liver. Oral administration of LC27, LC67, or LM in mice reduced ethanol-induced ALT, AST, TG, and TC levels in the blood and liver. These also suppressed ethanol-induced NF-κB activation and α-smooth muscle actin expression in the liver and increased ethanol-suppressed AMPK activation. Treatment with LC27, LC67, or LM increased ethanol-suppressed alcohol dehydrogenase and acetaldehyde dehydrogenase activities in the liver, as well as tight junction protein expression in the liver and colon. Moreover, treatment with LC27, LC67, or LM restored the ethanol-disturbed gut microbiota composition, such as the increased population of Proteobacteria, and inhibited fecal and blood lipopolysaccharide levels. These inhibited NF-κB activation and increased tight junction protein expression in ethanol- or lipopolysaccharide-stimulated Caco-2 cells. These findings suggest that LC27, LC67, and LM can alleviate alcoholic steatosis by inhibiting LPS-mediated NF-κB activation through restoration of the disturbed gut microbiota.

Abstract
The present study investigated the patterns of microorganisms in an artificial larval diet during Dacus ciliatus (Diptera; Tephritidae) larval development. Microbial population contents in the diet of total heterotrophic bacteria, yeast and molds, coliform and lactobacilli, and their dynamics during development, were monitored. Initially, the microbial composition in diet trays failing to produce viable pupae and in trays successfully producing pupae and adult flies was characterized. The failing diet trays contained large populations of lactobacilli that increased during larval development, and low populations of coliforms. In contrast, the successful diet showed an increasing population of coliforms and a low, or undetected, population of lactobacilli. To study the hypothesis that lactobacilli affect D. ciliatus larval development, we conducted controlled inoculation experiments in which Lactobacillus plantarum was added into fresh diet at the time of egg seeding. L. plantarum inoculated trays showed no production of D. ciliatus. Control trays without lactobacilli inoculation showed variable results. One tray successfully produced viable pupae and adults, and showed a slight and slow increase in the indigenous populations of lactobacilli. The second tray, however, failed to produce pupae and showed a fast increase of the indigenous lactobacilli to very high levels. Monitored pH trends in L. plantarum-inoculated diet showed a sharp pH decrease during the first 4 days of larval development from 5 to less than 4 units, while successful diet, producing viable D. ciliatus pupae and adults, showed a moderate pH drop during most of the larval development period. The paper discusses the possible ecological interactions between D. ciliatus larvae, the microbial content of the diet and the physical properties of the diet. The discussion also points out at the usefulness of this approach in understanding and managing mass production parameters of tephritid fruit flies industrial diets used for Sterile Insect Technique.

Abstract
This study investigated the effects of Lactobacillus plantarum 120, Saccharomyces cerevisiae 2018 and Staphylococcus xylosus 135 inoculation on N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) and its precursors formation, and on microbiological characteristics of Chinese traditional fermented fish products (CTFPs). The results indicated that three strains could directly degrade NDMA in culture broth, and the highest degradation rate was observed in L. plantarum 120. The lactic acid bacteria counts in samples inoculated with L. plantarum 120 and mixed starter cultures were significantly (P < 0.05) higher than the others during the initial and middle fermentation stages (≤3 weeks). The final contents of total volatile base nitrogen, trimethylamine, dimethylamine, nitrite and NDMA in inoculated samples were significantly (P < 0.05) lower than those in spontaneous fermentation samples. According to these results, the inoculation with autochthonous starter cultures was a promising method to inhibit the NDMA and its precursors accumulation in CTFPs during fermentation process.

Abstract
The aim of this non-interventional, observational, multicentre, open-label study was to assess the effectiveness of a vaginal gel containing extracts of Thymus vulgaris and Eugenia caryophyllus in conjunction with two specific lactobacilli strains (Lactobacillus fermentum LF10 and Lactobacillus plantarum LP02) specifically formulated in slow-release vaginal capsules, in treating bacterial vaginosis (BV), vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) or recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis disease (RVVC) [Estromineral Probiogel (EPB) in Italy, or Saugella Probiogel; Meda Pharma - Mylan Group]. There was a statistically significant improvement in pruritus, burning, vulvovaginal oedema and erythema, dyspareunia and vaginal secretions in all diagnostic groups. At the end of the study, the microbiological evaluation was normal in 80.0% of cases with BV, 62.5% of cases with VVC and 100.0% with RVVC. The clinical data allow EPB to be recommended in the acute treatment of VVC and BV, suggesting that EPB is a useful maintenance treatment if there are recurrent episodes. Controlled studies are needed to confirm the efficacy of EPB in the treatment of recurrences and to identify the most appropriate dosage regimen.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Probiotics could be beneficial to health and some of them have shown to modulate immune responses. AIM The aim of this study is to investigate if the probiotic strains including Lactobacillus and Pediococcus strains are able to alleviate allergic reactions in an ovalbumin-induced airway allergy model. METHODS Lactobacillus multi-species preparation (LMP) was gavaged to BALB/c for total six weeks and BALB/c was challenged with ovalbumin in the last two weeks. A barometric whole-body plethysmography was used to assess enhanced pause (Penh) of airway hyperreactivity (AHR). Immunoglobulins (Ig) such as IgE, IgG1, IgG2a and cytokines such as IL-12, IFN-γ, IL-4, IL-5, TNF-α and IL-13 in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid were assayed using ELISA kits. RESULTS The results showed this LMP significantly reduced Th2 cytokines and enhanced Th1 cytokines production. OVA-specific IgE and IgG1 was lower in the probiotics-treated mice whereas IgG2a was increased. Most importantly, this murine model showed LMP supplementation significantly reduced AHR. CONCLUSIONS Overall, this Lactobacillus multi-species preparation seemed to suppress OVA-sensitized airway hyperreactivity, thus serving as a possible candidate for therapeutic uses for allergic airway symptoms.

Abstract
The modification of carbon nanomaterials with biological molecules paves the way toward their use in biomedical and biotechnological applications, such as next-generation biocatalytic processes, development of biosensors, implantable electronic devices, or drug delivery. In this study, different commercial graphene derivatives, namely, monolayer graphene oxide (GO), graphene oxide nanocolloids (GOCs), and polycarboxylate-functionalized graphene nanoplatelets (GNs), were compared as biomolecule carrier matrices. Detailed spectroscopic analyses showed that GO and GOC were similar in composition and functional group content and very different from GN, whereas divergent morphological characteristics were observed for each nanomaterial through microscopy analyses. The commercial α-l-rhamnosidase RhaB1 from the probiotic bacterium Lactobacillus plantarum, selected as a model biomolecule for its relevant role in the pharma and food industries, was directly immobilized on the different materials. The binding efficiency and biochemical properties of RhaB1-GO, RhaB1-GOC, and RhaB1-GN composites were analyzed. RhaB1-GO and RhaB1-GOC showed high binding efficiency, whereas the enzyme loading on GN, not tested in previous enzyme immobilization studies, was low. The enzyme showed contrasting changes when immobilized on the different material supports. The effect of pH on the activity of the three RhaB1-immobilized versions was similar to that observed for the free enzyme, whereas the activity-temperature profiles and the response to the presence of inhibitors varied significantly between the RhaB1 versions. In addition, the apparent Km for the immobilized and soluble enzymes did not change. Finally, the free RhaB1 and the immobilized enzyme in GOC showed the best storage and reutilization stability, keeping most of their initial activity after 8 weeks of storage at 4 °C and 10 reutilization cycles, respectively. This study shows, for the first time, that distinct commercial graphene derivatives can influence differently the catalytic properties of an enzyme during its immobilization.

Abstract
Lactobacillus plantarum (widespread member of the genus Lactobacillus) is one of the most studied species extensively used in food industry as probiotic microorganism and/or microbial starter. The exploitation of Lb. plantarum strains with their long history in food fermentation forms an emerging field and design of added-value foods. Lb. plantarum strains were also used to produce new functional (traditional/novel) foods and beverages with improved nutritional and technological features. Lb. plantarum strains were identified from many traditional foods and characterized for their systematics and molecular taxonomy, enzyme systems (α-amylase, esterase, lipase, α-glucosidase, β-glucosidase, enolase, phosphoketolase, lactase dehydrogenase, etc.), and bioactive compounds (bacteriocin, dipeptides, and other preservative compounds). This review emphasizes that the Lb. plantarum strains with their probiotic properties can have great effects against harmful microflora (foodborne pathogens) to increase safety and shelf-life of fermented foods.
